The Extravagant Life of Diesel’s Founder & Sensational Billionaire Renzo Rosso ~Renzo Russo Success Story 16www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 5 Special Edition September 2022 | INDIA

The builder of the clothing empire and the ingenious billionaire, Renzo Rosso was born on 15th September 1955 to a northern Italian farmer. Rosso is famous for his proactive advertising, savvy retail insight, and smart business sense in developing one of the most fantastic denim and retail brands of all time –“Diesel”.

Renzo Rosso’s net worth stands at $3.5 billion, making him the 19th richest man in Italy. Interestingly, Rosso in 2012 for the first time got featured in the Forbes billionaires list.

RISING TO THE FAME

It was in the 1970s when he made his first pair of jeans, and they had a leg opening of 42 centimetres, and his buddies liked the jeans so much that they began requesting them.

In 1975, Rosso dropped out of the University of Venice to work at a small garment factory as a production manager. His mentor, Adriano Goldschmied, encouraged him to remain in the business, and together they established a new venture, thereby creating Diesel. The brand name Diesel was selected because ‘diesel’ was deemed the ‘alternative fuel’.

By 1985, his business associate, denim legend Adriano Goldschmied, had been bought out by Rosso. Here, Rosso introduced the concept of high-quality luxury-premium denim that looked faded and worn, which achieved massive success in the ‘80s and 90s, with complete ownership of the market. Also, Diesel famously ran one of the first gaythemed commercials in 1995.

Rosso took a step back in 2002 to manage a new investment firm, the OTB Group,

putting together all the labels he created with those he purchased. It included French fashion brand Maison Margiela in 2002, the Italian brand Marni in 2012, and Viktor & Rolf in 2008, all of them were headquartered in Amsterdam. In Breganze, Italy, in the countryside north of Venice, Rosso established a glittering new Recently, headquarters.Dieselhas

managed to win back some of the cultural cachets it enjoyed in the past. It appointed its first creative director in 2013, Nicola Formichetti, who acquired a reputation as a stylist for pop star Lady Gaga.

INTERESTS

Rosso maintains a house in the village of Bassano del Grappa in northern Italy, a 30-minute drive from Venice. It is home to 50,000 people, where Rosso has provided with free Wi-Fi in the area named after the business he founded.

Rizzoli published the book by Renzo Rosso in 2011, which outlines his theory, it is entitled “Be Stupid: For Successful Living”.

An avid art collector, Rosso collects and displays paintings of famous Italian artists. Apart from work, Rosso loves snowboarding, skiing, wake-boarding, and cycling.

Rosso even enjoys soccer and owns Bassano Virtus 55 S.T., his home team. When he took it over in 1996, Rosso added his birth year, ‘55, to the end of the name of the club. Rosso also operates a winery called Diesel Farm, which sources grapes from a tract of land he acquired in 1994. It produces wines such as “Rosso di Rosso.” that is a play on his family name. Rosso considers it a boutique dealer and only sells the wine to selected restaurants around the world.

SOCIAL INITIATIVES

In 2012, the iconic Bridge Rialto, one of the four bridges over the Grand Canal of Venice, was promised to be repaired for 5.5 million Euro by Rosso. He has also funded restoration efforts to preserve the heritage of the mediaeval-era town.

Rosso is now operating an OTB charity fund, known as the OTB Foundation. It spent EUR 12 million to ‘combat socioeconomic injustice and of less-favoured areas and persons worldwide.’ About 90% of the foundation’s activities concentrate on Sub-Saharan Africa, with the remaining 10% focusing on Italy.

While the reigns of the organisation he founded have since been relinquished, the 65-year-old still serves as president of his holding company, OTB (which stands for Only The Brave, a corporate motto). It does not seem like he will slow down in the immediate future.

Founder

manufacturing setup, paper & paper products manufacturing setup and mining industry permissions. The team of BCM interacted with the founder and director of Corpseed. Mr. Vipan Thakur. We were curious to know how Corpseed started. The founder shared that while he was working on his first venture, named Precult, which is an online marketplace for all medical devices and equipment, he was struck with an idea to enter the advisory business. He further adds that the idea of compliance has always bothered him and he feels it bothers many other entrepreneurs as no one wants to lose out their hard earned money for missing out some compulsory compliance norms. He therefore always felt that he should solve this for himself and others like him and this lead to the formation of Corpseed

“ The compliance has troubled me since the beginning of my entrepreneurial career in 2015, as it does for many other Indian business owners. Therefore, we developed the concept of “Corpseed” in order to simplify compliance and encourage ease of doing business.”

Digital compliance is the way of the future, but it comes with serious security, privacy, ownership, and integrity risks. The best compliance solution providers like Corpseed, gives you the chance to lower these risks, boost output, and enhance the organization’s overall effectiveness. On that note we inquired the founder how AI is transforming compliance management for Corpseed. The founder explains that due to its excellent capabilities for handling enormous jobs at incredibly quick rates, they increasingly use AI in compliance and governance. He quotes

“ We are developing an artificial intelligence-based compliance model. This will help enterprises to comprehend and calculate the essential compliance that are required, plan their business compliance operations, and easily manage all of them under one dashboard. We are currently developing a beta version of the CRM (Compliance and Risk Management) models that we created internally, making daily improvements based on feedback from our clients. Our long term

future plan is to integrate AI based technology with a compliance and risk management system to make it easier for an entity to keep a compliance check in a much more accurate manner.”

In under five years, the Corpseed went from having just three workers working in a co-working space in Delhi to having 150+ employees working in a cutting-edge 10,000 square foot office in Noida. And not to forget that, out of these five years, about two and half years were covid struck where the world was almost stagnated.

Therefore we posed a question to the founder on what was that secret recipe that led to such an enormous success. Mr. Vipan credits this success to the founding members who brought wisdom and experience with them. He explains,

“Our founding members have backgrounds in operations, technology, human resources, and business growth. As all four departments serve as an organization’s heart, brain, lungs, and spine, this assisted the company in laying a solid foundation. We established our processes and applied other tactics in accordance with MNCs standards because our founding members were former employees of well-known multi-nationals. This aided the business in luring top talent from the market. Also impressive are the company’s employment, development, and retention methods. These all played a part in helping us assemble a capable and productive staff.”

WRAP UP

A qualified compliance consultant makes sure your company is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. They can support your company at every stage of the process because they have the inside knowledge and regulatory expertise. Hiring a seasoned compliance consultant firm may provide you with an impartial viewpoint on how to cope with various compliance rules, enabling your company to easily spot any violations of the law that might otherwise go unnoticed. The sought after team like Corpseed can help you with advisory and the compliance procedure. After all, keeping compliance is the cornerstone to operating a successful business.

Desired, Stolen, Cursed

The backstory of Kohinoor

The most famous but disputed diamond in the world, Kohinoor, is about to change hands. The diamond is currently set in the Imperial State Crown, which was made in 1937 for King George VI’s coronation and later given to Elizabeth II. The diamond will, however, be worn by the Queen’s daughter-in-law and Prince Charles III’s wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, during the coronation of the new King. As the wife of King Charles III, Camilla has been crowned Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth nations. At King Charles’ coronation, the Crown of Queen Elizabeth, which currently wears the Kohinoor, will be placed on Camilla’s head. The crown, also known as the Queen Mother’s Crown, was made in 1937 for Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI, and she continued to wear it after her daughter Elizabeth II became the monarch. The Kohinoor diamond, which is the most well-known of the 2,800 diamonds on the Crown, is set in platinum. Currently, the British Royal Crown Jewels are all on display in the Jewel House at the Tower of London, includ ing the Queen Mother’s Crown. The crown jewels are actually owned by the British monarchy and never pass into private hands. As a result, even though Camilla will wear it during the coronation, it remains a public heirloom.

History 22www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 5 Special Edition September 2022 | INDIA

Origin of the Koh-i-Noor

The Koh-i-Noor diamond is one of the biggest and most wellknown cut diamonds in the world. Most likely, it was dis covered in southern India between 1100 and 1300. The name “Mountain of Light” refers to the stone’s incredible size, which was originally 186 carats in weight (today 105.6). India’s recently created Telangana state’s Golconda region is well known for its diamond mines. They have created some of the world’s finest jewels. Golconda, also known as Golla konda (“shepherd’s hill”), was the centre of mediaeval Gol conda in Southern India. The location is 11 kilometres west of Hyderabad. The most well-known gems, including the “Hope Diamond,” “Idol’s Eye,” and most famous “Koh-iNoor,” have come from this region of India, which has abun dant gold and diamond deposits.

History of Koh-i-noor

The Kohinoor was created in Golconda, India. In particu lar, the Rayalaseema diamond mine denotes the “Land of Stones,” and it was found during coal mining in the Kol lur mine during the Kakatiya era. At that time, it started changing hands between governing dynasties. The stone first appears in written history when it belonged to Babur (1483-1530), the Mughal Empire’s first emperor and a direct ancestor of Genghis Khan (1162/67-1227), the Mongol em peror. The diamond was probably acquired as a war spoil, a fate it would experience several more times over the course of its long history and association with rulers. It is mentioned in the Mughal emperor’s memoirs, which he wrote in 1526. The stone, according to Babur, is “worth half of the daily ex pense of the entire world.”

When the Persian king Nader Shah (1698-1747) attacked and captured Delhi in 1739, he took possession of the dia mond, despite the Mughal emperor’s attempts to conceal it in his turban. When Nader Shah first saw the stone, he called it a Koh-i-Noor, or “mountain of light,” and the name has stuck with it ever since. But its original name was “Samantik Mani,” which means “Prince and Leader of All Diamonds. When Nader Shah died in 1747, his chief general, Ahmad Shah (1722-1772), claimed the precious stone and established the Durrani Dynasty of rulers in Afghanistan. The Durani

eventually lost power, and Shah Shujah of the dynasty (l. 1785-1842) was forced to flee to India in 1813, when he gave the diamond as a gift to Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of Punjab Maharajah(1780-1839).Duleep

Singh (1838-1893) inherited it when he was only five years old, but he was to be the last ruler of the Punjab and Sikh Empire as the British Empire extended its tentacles into northern India. At the time, it was prized as a symbol of an Empire’s might. According to a popular prov erb, “He who has this diamond will own the world, but will also know all its misfortunes; only God, or a woman, can wear it with impunity.”

How the British East India Company managed to cap ture the ‘cursed’ Kohinoor:

During the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849 AD, Raja Ran jit Singh’s son Duleep Singh was forced to surrender the Sikh empire by the British army. Following that, the British Government in Lahore transferred ownership of the famous Kohinoor diamond to the British East India Company’s trea sury. It is said that Duleep Singh, who was 11 at the time, “surrendered” the Kohinoor diamond along with the Sikh kingdom to the British. The Kohinoor and Duleep Singh were given to Dr. John Login as guardians after the Sikh dominion was turned over to the British East India Company.

Duleep Singh was convinced to accept Christ by Dr. Log in. Although Peter Bance contends that the truth was very different from what people believed, Singh is frequently re ferred to as the “King Who Gave Away Kohinoor.”

The diamond was taken from the Sikh Empire’s treasury when Duleep Singh was 11 years old by Lord Dalhousie, the Governor General of India. In 1854, Duleep Singh met Queen Victoria and requested to see the diamond. The diamond was brought from the British treasury on the Queen’s instruc tions, Lady Login argued, so seeing it would not harm him. Bance narrated how Duleep took the diamond and carried it to the window. He raised his hand and muttered, “to Hum ble Majesty Kohinoor diamond,” as the diamond glistened in the sunlight, and this started the donation bid.

Calls for a Return Across the Globe

The Indian government has demanded the Koh-i-Noor be brought back to its country-of-origin many times. The stone became a representation of the nation’s independence from British rule, which was attained in the same year as the first such request, in 1947.

In 1976, a new participant entered the discussion when Pa kistan’s then-prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto demanded that the stone be given back to his nation. The gemstone is also claimed by Iran and Afghanistan. By no means have the demands for the Koh-i-return Noor’s to the continent subsid ed; in fact, in 2015, a group of Indian investors even started a legal procedure to get the diamond back. However, the Brit ish royal family has yet to part with this most renowned and sought-after of diamonds.

In 2010, 30-year-old Vinod Roshan D’souza wrote to the queen of the UK after writing to Barak Obama and UN. He got the following response- “The diamond could not be re turned because it was given to the Queen as part of the Treaty of Lahore in 1849 and is currently set in Queen Elizabeth’s crown”, the ministerial support team informed.

ReviewAdda

The Enriching Entrepreneurial Journey of ReviewAdda

The brainchild of Co-Founders Prateek Kr Bhowmick and Rahul Jain, ReviewAdda was established in 2015 as a “Digital Platform for College Admission” company, with an aim to create a network of aspirants and alumni to help make the drawn-out admission processes easier on the candidates. Having worked together for the last seven years, the founders have successfully placed more than 36,000+ admissions in premium & under-rated Indians colleges and universities. The company has, at this point, 3,200+ Partner Micro-Coaching Institutes/ Tutors that work with them as guides and influencers from Tier-2, Tier-3 and small towns in India.

ABOUT THE CO-FOUNDERS

Formerly one of the founding team members of Vriti, India’s pioneering edtech startup backed by Intel Capital & Jafco Asia, Prateek has had a foot in the business since its early days. It was there that he met Rahul Jain, an entrepreneur with a business background but a core belief in technology. Together the two of them have a combined experience in tech, funding & operation in the Ed-tech Sector. They embarked on the entrepreneurial journey together with ReviewAdda, after continuous discussions and a well-researched idea. They have made ReviewAdda what it is today, working with a team of dedicated core-founding members, the two have had a close relationship through the years, challenging each other and respecting each other’s decisions, always prioritizing what’s best for the company.

Prateek Kr Bhowmick | Co-Founder & COO at ReviewAdda
T H E B E S T COMPANY TO FOR IN 2022WORK

At the time of inception of ReviewAdda back in 2015, the two founders did not even have proof-of-concept and platform. It was just on the pen-paper based idea stage with strong data points & analytics, and there was a lack of investors willing to take a risk with young first time entrepreneurs They were then referred to connect with Ultra Media (India’s Largest Film Distribution House), who met with them in Mumbai. It only took one meeting for them to believe in their vision and value, and they ended up investing an amount of INR 1 Crore as Seed-Funding. That happened to be the first breakthrough moment in the entrepreneurial journey. Ultra Media played a very important role in giving a direction for their growth–not only in numbers but in profitability, too. A beginning like this helped them sail through the unprecedented and uncertain times of the pandemic as well.

Of the company, they feel the proudest of their fundamentals and core focus. Despite being advised by many to make a shift towards international admissions, they refused to stray from the path they had chosen. Believing it to be a commodified and competitive market that does not match with their interests, they have left it to the many great advisory firms in the study abroad segment.

CORE VALUES

India has huge scope in the Domestic Admissions market, about 8 million students take admissions in 1,000+ universities and 40,000+ colleges every year. ReviewAdda is focused on domestic admissions, and is yet to capture even 1% of the market. Prateek and Rahul are personally focused on the ultra-premium admission market in the higher education sector. The last minute seats in the premium and underrated colleges & universities are often missed by the students due to a lack of advice and counseling.

The education admission sector overall is changing quite dramatically. In universities or colleges within the family-owned universities, educationists were first generation entrepreneurs with prior experience in other sectors. These days, the next generations of their families are adopting technology, processes, and great minds and people. For example, there is now a trend of using SaaS-based CRM/IVR, converting from a hierarchy-based, people-oriented approach to a process-oriented approach. This has led to an influx of great professors and teams from IVYLeague Colleges, IIMs, IITs and DU, which is extremely opportune.

Prateek says, “I fundamentally believe in hard work with smart work, perseverance, resilient, positive & spiritual energy and the last luck factor.” With wellplanned ground research strategy and execution as his forte, he has invested himself entirely in this enterprise. Apart from ReviewAdda, he invests his time in early-stage startups, and if opportunities occur, loves doing some small investments in those startups. His theory for investment and mentorship in startups is to learn fast from the mistakes. He deeply believes in the phrase: “Right Idea in the Right

Market with the Right Execution at the Right Time and with the Right Team”

Of his influences and motivations in the journey, he says: “Self-confidence, market research with on-ground data and positive vibes helped me a lot to tackle the rollercoaster entrepreneurial journey. The entrepreneurial journey is not a straight line. My wife is a motivational leader for me. She has played a great role in my success. I really like Sachin Bansal of Flipkart, started with a simple idea and exited with a large-scale startup. He has been a great example of a middle-class family guy with great execution and self-motivation.”

The Co-Founders have always shared examples of fundamental core values in every fortnight meeting with the team members. Whether it’s universities, colleges, students or parents, they are never to pitch any false commitments and misinformation. They believe their business runs on references, and core values are more important when you don’t want to spend extravagantly on marketing. “The only core fundamentals are the marketing funnel for your organization,” states Prateek.

PARTING WORDS

“Don’t start a startup because it’s a trend, start a core business with clarity and profitability, or find the mental peace with your regular job and alternative investments returns, and don’t chase a stressful entrepreneur journey without backup.”

ONE OF INDIA’S LARGEST AND MOST PROMISING CHAINPRE-SCHOOL

WHY ARE BRANDED PRESCHOOLS MORE SUSTAINABLE?

Education has been hampered severely over the last few years during pandemic and in today’s era parenting for children upto 8 years also becomes very tough and adrift without the right preschool partner. Above all Children are evolving faster than we can imagine. Children are consuming knowledge from every aspect of their life. Bad or Good, you can’t stop the flow of information in their lives. Their brain is a clean slate, and they’re hungry to scribble over it, which can impact their upcoming life significantly. There are no filters to the information freely available, and every detail adds to their being human.

That’s why Holistic Education and approach can only redirect the child’s energy in the right direction.,” said Dharmesh Kapasi - President of Shanti Juniors (The preschool division of Shanti Educational Initiatives Limited- SEIL). SEIL is a listed company, and Shanti Juniors has been successfully operating in 74 cities of India with 350+ Preschools since 2010. It has won more than 19 awards in various segments of early childhood education. So, let’s know further from him about Shanti Juniors’ education approach and the business opportunities across India.

CONSIDERING THE DEPTH OF YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE PRESCHOOL INDUSTRY TILL NOW, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY. WHAT WERE YOUR KEY LEARNINGS, CHALLENGES, AND MAJOR LESSONS? We started with 6 preschools in 2010 from Ahmedabad and dramatically expanded our chain in Pune, Bangalore, Patna, Jaipur, Chennai and other parts of Gujarat. Now, we’ve 350+ preschools across India. First of all, we’re not dealing with any commodity and service and we’re nurturing children and that’s why we’ve to be extra cautious and sensitive while nourishing this generation Alpha. I am thankful to my academic team and our franchise partners, who have been working closely on curriculum innovation, teachers’ training and implementation. As said, the evolution of children is way ahead and faster. To

cope with them and utilise their energy for fruitful, positive and productive learning, We’ve invested millions on curriculum development and conceptual learning. We keep upgrading our Teaching and toys, student kits and other material so that a child is gripped well and their Inquisitiveness is satisfied. So adaptability and sustainability have been my key learnings for this segment.

SHANTI JUNIORS HAS BEEN EXPANDING QUITE RAPIDLY. WE ARE INTERESTED IN KNOWING MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPANSION STRATEGY. AND WHAT ARE THE KEY FACTORS THAT THE SHANTI JUNIORS HAS BEEN THE MOST SUSTAINABLE PRESCHOOL BRAND.

Shanti Juniors has always focused on the holistic development of children through our unique teaching methodology called - The I-Cube Learning ladder, where the children’s Inquisitiveness is led to Interaction and later turns into Innovation. Our Preschool’s environment, Setup, Student Kit, Montessori toys and curriculum encourages child for self-exploration. Recently, we have added KIDDOWITTY kit with STEAM based approach to enhance the skill of a child blending Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math into a DIY format. We’re franchisecentric brand and to provide the best education to our children, the sustainability of our preschool partners becomes the highest paramount for us. We’ve simplified the preschool business; we’ve set up the process and SOPs. Elephants don’t bite. Mosquitoes do. That’s what major preschool franchisors miss out on in their SOPs- The details (Small is big). Shanti Juniors has

32www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 5 Special Edition September 2022 | INDIA

been through many ups and downs, including the pandemicinduced challenges, which we have overcome strongly because we’re a process-driven organisation. Our support ecosystem comprises dedicated teams managing different roles like academics, marketing, admission support, and logistics, who comes together to handhold a franchise partner to empower them

Furthermore,tremendously.wehave

formed various clubs based on their admissions numbers and offer varying privileges. These franchise partners who are now members of 100 clubs, 200 clubs, and 300 clubs were housewives, employees in some organisations, professionals from different backgrounds, and had no idea about operating a preschool earlier.

WHY IS THE PRESCHOOL BUSINESS SUSTAINABLE, AND WHY DO PARENTS NOW INSIST ON A BRANDED PRESCHOOL MORE THAN EVER?

Children have missed out a lot during last couple of years. We’re talking about their core foundation and children were never prepared for this situation. Their lives had become monotonous and they were restricted to squares - Mobiles, TVs, Gadgets, their rooms. Everything was squared and limited. They’ve missed out on the feeling of experiential learning. You can’t feel the sand, smell of flowers, share with your friends and other 1000s of such gestures and things. To make thing worse, the unrestricted access to electronic devices exposed them to unproductive activities and addictive Apps. Thankfully, we already had Juniors App Learn, where were able to divert the energy and attention of our children with our gamified curriculum which enhances the skills of recognition, sorting, identification and revision. It also encourages a child with appreciations, scoring points and applause & cheer on their achievement and it comes with the daily screen-time limit lock.

Parents have understood the importance of Early Child Care & Education (ECCE) and they strongly prefer a branded preschool chain over the local preschools. As parents understand the importance of structured and scientific approach toward Early Child Care and Education. That’s why it’s the right time to start your own Shanti Juniors Preschool.

Thank you, Mr. Dharmesh, It was insightful and interesting and We saw Shanti Juniors’ Instagram page, its filled with cute toddlers all over. We wish you and your team all the best for the coming years and keep contributing to this beautiful journey of childhood celebration.

After leaving, Hassan founded the robotics company Willow Garage in 2006. Because the new search engine’s algorithm evaluated backlinks to determine a site’s importance, Page and Brin originally gave it the name “BackRub.” Page and Brin mentioned Hassan and Alan Steremberg as being crucial to the growth of Google. In a later paper about the project, Page and Brin were also co-authors with Rajeev Motwani and Terry Winograd. Larry Page’s PageRank patent included a cita tion to Robin Li’s 1996 invention, RankDex, which used a similar page-ranking and site-scoring algorithm to PageRank. Li later went on to develop Baidu, the Chinese search engine. Forbes Facility Services Pvt. Ltd. (FFSL)

FFSL along with the Govt. of India (GOI) proudly con fers their joy, on achieving the 8 Blue Flag Certification, in a single attempt. Eight beaches were selected for this acknowledgement, namely Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Ghoghla (Diu), Kasarkod (Karnataka), Kappad (Kerala), Padubidri (Karnataka), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Golden (Odisha) and Radhanagar (Andaman & Nico bar Islands). FFSL stands proud of managing three of these internationally acclaimed beaches - Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Ghoghla (Diu) and Kasarkod (Karnataka). FFSL was working with the Ministry of Environment (GOI) on this project for the last four years.

Managing a beach isn’t a cakewalk, as it requires a result-oriented framework and skilled people, which unfortunately wasn’t available. Hence, FFSL had to start from scratch, working on building an adroit team, convincing the locals about the need and efficiency of beach cleaning. Another thing they did was, acknowledging every cleaner as an ambassador of the Blue Flag Project, which deliberately charged them up. FFSL fostered all kinds of maintenance and associated supports to every crewmate, who put their hard work and sweat into the fruition of this project.

THE BLUE FLAG CERTIFICATION

The coveted blue flag recognition is the world’s foremost certification that covers Beaches, Marinas, and Sustainable Boating Tourism Operators. The accreditation includes stringent quality parametersenvironmental, educational, safety, and accessibility, that has to be followed without any exception. The international jury of this certification included eminent members from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The certification is conveyed conferred, by the Denmark-based non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education.

AN OVERVIEW OF FFSL

From Mechanized Housekeeping, Operation and Maintenance, Food Service, Offshore Service Management, Guesthouse Management, Horticulture, to Façade Cleaning and Pest Control, all are governed by FFSL. Incepted in 2005, FFSL is an inclusive part of the famous Eureka Forbes Group and carries the corporate lineage of Shapoorji Pallonji Group. With a demonstrated history of spectacular solutions, FFSL has allied with all industrial verticals ranging from the manufacturing sector to hospitals, hotels, schools and many more. Its quality and commitment to solutions are fortified with certifications, namely ISO:9001, 18001, 14001 and 22000. Now, with the 8 Blue Flag recognition, it’s aiming to become more polished. FFSL carries the same vision as its parent body, “A Happy, Healthy and Safe Pollution-Free Environment based on Trust and Lasting Relationships with Customers”.

When the project was still on paper, FFSL had projected a significant infrastructure development required for its fruition. This made them bring Eureka Forbes on board not only for being its parent body but for being the foremost provider of infrastructure. Syncing with the parent body gave FFSL a major upper hand with respect to technical support.

“It was a great opportunity where the parent company and the sister concern had jointly taken up a project and successfully completed it. So, that gives us a great sense of achievement or synergy within the group”, acknowledges Rajiv Julka, one of the leading executives in this project.

Shares Its Pride On Achieving The Coveted ‘Blue Flag Certification’

MAJOR CHALLENGES IN THE PROJECT

Convincing locals about the project and marshalling a team of like-minded people, were the two significant challenges, for FFSL. Since this was a pilot project, only four beaches were initially selected that too under strict criteria. The focus was to revamp these beaches to an international level. The locals around the beaches had a stringent ambiguity regarding this project; as such, convincing them that this is something worth doing and has a definite significance on the environment was a daunting task. However, FFSL’s core motivation drove their energy; first, they did in-depth research on what they are trying to achieve. Then, they forayed to make the locals understand the project and build a team of people, having the will and passion towards it. Around 400-500 arduous people were selected (98% local), and FFSL put a considerable effort into training them. Govt. bodies like the BMC and the Collector also took a great interest in the project, which helped them addressing

Accomplishingcompliances.

this project has upscaled FFSL’s already attained position - a notch higher. The Company proudly stands as the cloud borders of its segment and has a history of building the business of many renowned companies. Originating from the industrial pioneer - Eureka Forbes, the Company already has a revered presence for its mechanised cleaning and other housekeeping solutions in diverse industries. Now with recognition on cleaning and maintaining beaches with industrial-grade equipment, FFSL has built strong roots in a much-untapped avenue.

STURDY DESPITE THE COVID OUTBREAK

The manufacturing space was widely affected, by the pandemic. Whether its economy, employment or movement of materials, everything faced an unprecedented halt. On top of that, the physical movement was strictly restricted, further increasing the problem by a level. However, FFSL carried a boiling desire to see the successful completion of this project. As such, with an iron will the entire team worked meticulously towards their individual roles and responsibilities. People working at the sites were safeguarded with all preventive measures and Govt. guidelines. Being a significant part of the Country’s economy, some of their services were permitted, with special guidelines off course. FFSL leveraged on digital communication to monitor the daily progress of work and further to stay unified.

The safety measures were also rigorously implanted in their offices. Only 15% to 30% of the employees were allowed at the office. Daily sanitization of premises

was done to ensure everyone’s safety. The Company also formed a special team, who conducted sanitization programs in other companies. A scalable number of their people across branches did get affected. However, FFSL ensured all the medical facilities and support needed to cure the affected.

TROVE OF MILESTONES AND ACCOLADES

Along with the prized milestones that include PAN India presence across 100+ cities, a client base 260 + at 400+ sites, 95% client retention rate, 6000+ dedicated people, ability to serve 65000+ meals/day, managing over 72 million sq ft. of structures, 100% compliance norms and an eminent overseas presence, FFSL has been bestowed with many revered accolades. The Company is the first to win the prestigious IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award. Also, for their astounding efforts in the outbreak, FFSL was given the Safety Award, by Bharat Oman Refineries Ltd., Warriors of COVID-19 by Mankind Pharma and COVID-19 Braveheart by Mondelez.

THE ROAD AHEAD

With a corporate lineage of 150 years, and exceptional maintenance of three ‘Blue Flag’ beaches Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Ghoghla (Diu) and Kasarkod (Karnataka), FFSL sets eye on GOI’s intent to develop - 100 more beaches. The effective transformation of these three beaches has made the locals aware, and they’re approaching the GOI To keep working on this activity. This growing demand is building a propelling pipeline for FFSL. Working in synergy with Environment Ministry and GOI, FFSL envisions to revamp the face of - 40 more beaches, in the coming years.

Azerbaijan-Armenia clashes: All you need to know

requested that the two countries end their hostilities and has refuted being biased in favour of one neighbour over the other. Russia is the large bear in the north at this point. Moscow, the only superpower with influence in the region, has ironically taken on the role of a peacemaker. At the UN, both Armenia and Azerbaijan have either abstained or refrained from casting a vote against Russia. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Russia would withdraw a sizable portion of its peacekeeping forces from Nagorno Karabakh to support the Ukrainian war effort stoked by the most recent fighting.

Early on Tuesday morning, a deadly clash broke out at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, leaving an undetermined number of Azerbaijani soldiers dead. According to reports, heavy shelling continued throughout the entire night as the neighbouring nations reopened hostilities over the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh. The two have already engaged in two wars over the area, and the ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread displacement and ethnic cleansing in addition to killings. Azerbaijan’s ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno Karabakh was the subject of a territorial dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan as recently as 2020. The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been simmering for years, but as the world’s attention was focused on Ukraine, tensions have increased.

Why are they fighting?

Geography both restricts and supports the conflicts that occur around the world. Armenia and Azerbaijan are located to the south of Russia, as can be seen by looking at a map of the world. Russia and Azerbaijan have shared land borders, and the Caspian Sea is to its west. Georgia and Armenia are border neighbours to the north. Turkey is to the south of Armenia. The origins of the conflict can be found during the Soviet era, when both countries were a part of the enormous union. The “union,” as history attests, was riven with contradictions, though. To allay the resentment, Moscow consented to divide Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan into an autonomous ethnically Armenian region.

But as the Soviet Union came to an end and its members became less under Moscow’s control, full-scale conflict erupted between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Before a ceasefire in 1994 brought a respite, between 20,000 and 30,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Armenia ultimately came to control Nagorno-Karabakh and also occupied 20% of the surrounding Azerbaijani territory. Even though the region is officially recognised as being a part

of Azerbaijan, it is still governed by political groups with ties to Armenia. The majority of the population, who are ethnic Armenians, oppose Azeri rule.

The local political scene Azerbaijan, which has a majority of Muslims, was supported in this territorial dispute by Turkey, which aspires to lead the Muslim world. It closed its land borders with Christianmajority Armenia, and relations on the diplomatic front remained shaky throughout the 1990s.

In 2016 and 2020, there were two wars fought between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At a cost of 6,500 lives on both sides during the 45-day conflict two years ago, Azerbaijan was able to reclaim many of its lost territories. At the time, Russia mediated a peace agreement between the two, but it has been, at best, tense. The cease-fire has been broken repeatedly. However, the 2020 conflict did result in some diplomatic progress between Turkey and Armenia, whose leaders decided it was time to begin communication. Iran is a neighbour as well, but due to its own calculations, it appears to be closer to Armenia. Tehran decides to work closely with Armenia because the nationalism of the Azeri Turks in Iran is considered a risk for the nation. Iran, however, has formally

According to reports, on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron, and U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken all spoke on the phone with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. More military assistance from Russia has been requested by Armenia. This time, Moscow’s ability to provide physical assistance on the ground will undoubtedly be constrained because its war machine even in Ukraine seems to be slowing down. According to the Kyiv government, it recently lost territories belonging to Ukraine. It would, however, prefer to avoid another border conflict as it presents a chance for influence from other forces if Moscow does not take action.

What took place on September 12 and 13?

The Defence Ministry of Armenia reported that at 00:05 on Tuesday (local time), Azerbaijan began “intensive shelling” against Armenian military positions in the vicinity of the cities of Goris, Sok, and Jermuk. “Armed forces of Armenia have begun a proportionate response,” it continued.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Défense tweeted that “Armenian armed forces units committed a large-scale provocation on the Dashkasan, Kalbajar, and Lachin directions of the AzerbaijaniArmenian state border during the night of September 12.”

Nitin Gadkari, the union minister for roads and highways, said on Monday that the government is working to build solar-powered electric highways that will make it easier to charge large trucks and buses. In remarks to a gathering hosted by the IndoAmerican Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Gadkari reaffirmed the government’s intention to build an electric public transportation system in TheIndia.use

of solar and wind energybased charging systems for electric vehicles is strongly encouraged by the government. He added, “We are also developing solar-powered electric highways, which will make it possible to charge buses and heavy-duty trucks while they are in motion.”

In general, an electric highway is a road that provides power to moving vehicles, including through overhead power lines.

According to Gadkari, the government also promotes solar energy use in toll booths. The road ministry, according to the minister, has created a newer alignment and has performed route optimization exercises along important corridors.

Gadkari stated, “We are building 26 greenfield expressways,” underscoring the importance of having a well-developed infrastructure for boosting economic activity, fostering the growth of new companies, and fostering job growth.

According to him, projects will receive quicker clearance with the implementation of the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan, which will also lower logistical costs. The minister invited US private investors to invest in India’s logistics, ropeways, and cable car sectors, saying that both India and the US are natural partners.

He said that the government is implementing tree plantation practises while building and expanding highways, and that approximately 3 crore trees would be planted alongside the nation’s highways. According to him, 27,000 trees have been successfully transplanted into national highway projects to date. Gadkari claims that the government is drafting a new policy known as “Tree Bank” for tree removal and tree planting. WAccording to policy, organisations like the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are required to keep track of the trees they plant as part of project development in a tree bank account.

Automatic vehicle toll collection based on usage

According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the Union government is also running a trial for an automatic number plate recognition system in an effort to ease traffic at toll booths and charge drivers according to the precise distance their vehicles travel on tolled highways.

The automated number plate recognition system (cameras with automatic number plate readers) is being tested as part of a pilot project by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This system will allow automated toll collection without requiring drivers to stop their cars. Without providing more information, he stated, “With this new technology, we want to achieve two objectives — free flow of traffic on toll booths and pay as you go.” The typical wait time for cars at toll plazas during 2018–19 was eight minutes.

The average wait time for vehicles has now decreased to 47 seconds as a result of the implementation of FASTags in 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. Even though there has been a significant reduction in the waiting time, there are still some delays at toll plazas during rush hour at some locations, particularly those close to cities and in densely populated towns.

Mr. Gadkari stated that the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is being installed on all recently built national highways as well as existing 4-plus lane national highways to provide seamless and safe traffic operation.

“The Ministry aims to implement the Intelligence Traffic System (ITS) on 15,000KM of the National Highway by 2024 to strengthen road safety,” the Road Transport and Highways Minister continued. The government is currently considering two options, according to Mr. Gadkari, who stated last month that they are number plates and a satellite-based toll system where the GPS is installed in the vehicle and the toll is directly deducted from the passenger’s bank account.

“We are in the process of using satellites to introduce GPS in place of FASTag, and we want to impose a toll on that basis. Technology is also present on licence plates, and India has good technology, Gadkari said.

“We are going to choose the technology. Although we haven’t made a formal decision, in my opinion, a sophisticated computerised digital system will replace the toll plaza and there won’t be one thanks to the number plate technology. The Minister had stated that there wouldn’t be any lines and that people would feel a great deal of relief.
