Ground-breaking Business Trends for

FOOD & BEVERAGE Companies

There is always a change of preference, that’s a human nature where people often get bored with choosing the same kind of meal every day. Bold flavors and meal-replacing snacks are always at the lead when it comes to food preferences, health, and wellness, immunity-boosting food. Consumers are more often nowadays, looking forward to nutrition-packed foods. An increase in the demand for healthier, quality frozen food products to fit in with changing lifestyle, more importantly for the maturing millennial generation who are busy in making a balance between a healthy family and career. The millennial consumers are more “clean eaters” than any other generation and intend to have a strong interest in what they are eating, how is it made, and by whom. Today is a generation that lives in a world where they can instantly access to information and if the consumer is unable to understand or find out about how a product is made and what is it inside it, they simply choose to leave it behind and switches to alternative products made by companies that have a more convincing and genuine commitment to sustainability and improvement of the environment.

Safety, Sustainability, and Transparency is all that matters

Consumers are more into demanding information about the food they eat, food safety is the main thing food and beverage industries focus on and it is now costing billions each year. The industry finds it more important to pinpoint safety issues immediately; from the people who are growing to the manufacturer, distributor, and beyond. The food companies need to be more focused on waste reductions as the consumers are more into demanding sustainable, transparent production and packaging in the products they purchase. As per the customer’s demand, the quality control and safety of the food products must be at the top.

Cuisine 18 www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 5 Special Edition January 2023 | INDIA

The Constant Rising Costs and Increased Ambiguity

Growing uncertainty in the marketplace is a matter that is faced by the food and beverages company. Some companies of food may look for smaller warehouses that can manage supplies, but the rising storage costs may be prohibitive. Another uncertainty that includes here is increased labor costs and tightening workforce challenges. The companies are also facing issues with on-time delivery due to the ongoing truck driver shortage.

Innovation and Variation

Purchasing has vast availability of products, with so many different products that are available for the purchase in a crowd of channels like starting from in-store, farmer’s markets, online, social media, and more.

The product innovation and differentiation are considered to be important in the food and beverage companies. Creating some solutions that would meet consumer preferences around sustainability such as edible packaging will be on the growth.

The innovative way to automate repetitive processes that provide good opportunities for businesses in the matter of improving production, back-office processes, supply management, fulfillment, and delivery.

Adding to that, using acquired consumers and business data for better business decision-making will be implementing a comprehensive digital strategy.

Merger and Acquisitions

Companies looking forward to spreading their investments across smaller brand acquisitions in accordance to round out product and geographic portfolios versus investing in their own research and development to help in saving time as well as money and reaching new customers. Private Equity (PE) companies that have operated in the consumer brand space will have a need to adjust their strategy along with looking for deals further down the market. The companies will even take on acquisitions in segments that have better prospects as a salty snack food, snack bars, cookies, and ready-to-eat meals, even if they are outside their traditional business.

Business Connect: Did everything come easy, or you have your story of struggle?

Sachiin: I quit my job with DHL Express in January 2004

22 www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 5 Special Edition January 2023 | INDIA
Founder & CEO Bluecrest HR Consulting Pvt. Ltd

as the Head-Direct Business Unit and went back to DHL in March for a sign-up. Now I was on the other side of the table as a “Vendor Partner” and had a greater responsibility to prove myself again. I could not fail now as I had chosen this one-way street to start my own company and make it a success story. This was the start of the struggle as we needed quality employees of our own, clients who would give us mandates and also pay us on time. For the first 8 months, I was doing Sales, Recruitment, Operations, Collections, Finances, and Administration too. I used to sit in the car park of a potential client, call him and tell him that I had just finished a meeting in the vicinity and would he be free for a meeting. Some met me, others were busy but then I did not give up.

Any Entrepreneur has to learn on his own as there are no academic courses to churn out one. At times there are hits and other times misses too but the journey has to be carried forward.

Business Connect: What kind of clients do you serve any special mentions?

Sachiin: DHL Express was our very first client and we built a good pool of talent on our payrolls from which DHL could cherry pick the best performing employees. We have done an RPO for a large multinational in background screening services where we hired 300 candidates to be put on our payrolls for a period of 3 months. We partnered a large insurance company on a pan India basis for staffing and sourcing 1500 employees.

We partnered Infomedia India before it became a part of the Network 18 group. We used to have monthly meetings with the entire HR team to understand obstacles to hiring and ways to overcome them. We used to meet line managers to solve issues and even handheld all over recruits after they joined the company for a period of 3 months. The bonding and the rapport building with the HR team were so good that post these monthly meetings we used to explore all new eating joints in the vicinity. We were the only consultant who saw a popular Hindi film with the Head HR and his team at a local cinema.

Business Connect: How do you ensure unbreakable faith of clients in your company?

Sachiin: We keep them updated on all new developments E.g. regards to compliances etc. We honestly tell them as to what is possible and what is not, no false hopes or promises. We respect our clients and are always professional with them. We give them a quality talent or “benchmark candidates” who will add value to them. The feedback that our candidate is doing well in the company bring a smile on the face of our consultant

Business Connect: How do you keep pace with the changing market trends?

Sachiin: We conduct regular training programs for our team E.g. Social Media hiring, we invest in technology like an Applicant Tracking System and appoint a Social Media agency to create more awareness of what we are

doing amongst the client & the candidate community.

Business Connect: In terms of your market, what do you feel the future holds for entrepreneurs?

Sachiin: We require people to enter our industry with a vision and having long term goals. Sadly, there are many Mom & Pop shops operating from their respective residence who are there for a short term and spoil the market by cutting rates. Clients require value-added services and not cheaper rates

Business Connect: Who is your role model in the business/entrepreneurial world and what have you learned from the person?

Sachiin: My role model is Dhirubhai Ambani for the mammoth conglomerate he built from scratch. Some learnings were to roll up your sleeves and work no matter whether the job or client is small or big, dream big but dream with your eyes wide open, and change your orbit, constantly.

Business Connect: How are you giving back to society (CSR, if any)?

Sachiin: I am the Honorary HR Director of Triumph Blood Bank since the last 5 years and all support like hiring or payroll management is free of cost. I am a Volunteer for the last 8 years with Kotak Education Foundation and have worked in 3 interventions of theirs. We have started “The Bluecrest Foundation” to support bright students coming from the weaker sections of the society.

Business Connect: Apart from work, what else do you like to spend your time doing?

Sachiin: I have finished 4 half marathons, been on the Mount Kailash parikrama in Tibet, do a bungee jump. On my bucket list - I still want to make a second trip to Mount Kailash, do the Everest Base Camp trek and do a pilgrimage walk of 290 km in 9 days.

Business Connect: What are the achievements and milestones of the company?

Sachiin: I think that the biggest achievement or milestone for the company was to survive the economic downturn of 2009-11 and have clients and employees who have worked with us for more than 8 years. Without them, I would not be sitting down to pen this article for you.

From one branch in Pune, Bluecrest HR Consulting Pvt. Ltd is now looking forward to spread their branches in Bangalore and New Delhi in this coming year as well and head to a higher path to sucess.

“I believe that the journey has just begun and I walked a few steps. I still have to cover a long distance. For me, each day is a new day where am going to learn new things and explore new opportunities to make the journey of our candidates a magical one.”

Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal are the major states involved in the practice of ornamental fish farming. The recent story of a farmer Yatindra Kashyap hailing from Motihari, Bihar is a perfect example who took funding from State government build ponds and gradually within a span of 5 years succeeded in making a good profit.

In the ornamental species trade, two types of fishes are available i.e. indigenous (Local) and exotic (Foreigner). The ease of availability of an enormous number of native species has largely contributed to the development of the ornamental fish industry. The indigenous species are mainly present in North-eastern states, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. According to the data available, to meet the export demand of the country the collection and rearing of around 90% of native species are done of which 85% belong to Northeast. Presently, nearly about 210 native species are exported to foreign countries. There is also a great demand for exotic species due to its color, shape, and appearance. There are above 300 exotic species that are involved in the ornamental fish trade, and demand for them keeps rising.

What things are needed for Starting an Ornamental Fish business?

•Aquarium or fish tank or concrete tanks or glass tanks-For rearing of Fish

•Pumps-Centrifugal and Turbine-For filling freshwater from a freshwater source

•Biofilter-Allows microorganism to grow which helps in the breakdown of wastes

•Aeration Devices-For adequate supply of Oxygen

•Seine Net or Net Reels - For catching fish

•Holding and Grading Equipment-Belts, tank trucks

•Water testing equipment- Pocket testers to analytical instrumentation for measuring pH, Conductivity, and other water quality characteristics.

• It enables relaxation of the mind and hence contributes to a healthy society

• It allows youngsters to get acquainted with nature and use their time adequately

• It creates an employment opportunity

• It can help in generating foreign exchange

Business Connect: What was your learning during struggling days so that our readers could prepare themselves for upcoming challenges?

Dr. Salunkhe: Never put all eggs in one basket (only one industry recruitment) because if that industry suffers due to recession or any other reason you are affected a lot. Trust yourself and your judgment and carry the team with you. Your trust is their trust and your people are your biggest asset. I learned that the staff will go through hardship and struggle with the boss if they believe in the boss, his vision and his struggle and know that there is honesty and integrity in the individual. When the turnaround happened I shared the rewards with them too.

Business Connect: How difficult is it to remain relevant in this competitive world? How do you keep yourself motivated during tough times?

Dr. Salunkhe: As I have gone through major problems earlier, now no issues scare us. To be relevant one has to be aware of the market, emerging forces as well as political trends because shifts in trends in one country can affect the recruitment of staff in another. Likewise, upcoming countries can be new areas to not only diversify the basic pool to recruit but also become the area to bring employment opportunities for IT experts from India.

Business Connect: Who is your role model in the business/ entrepreneurial world and what have you learned from the person?

Dr. Salunkhe: There is not one specific person. But Attributes in the people who taught me, who guided me, who stood with me through thick and thin. As a CEO, you need to be a master of various traits along with a strong hold on finance as it is the heart of businesses. Having a risk bearing trait is the biggest asset of all along with the will to fight.

Business Connect: What are your thoughts on women participation in the entrepreneurial world?

Dr. Salunkhe: The world is an open arena for women entrepreneurs. Women have the capacity to multi-task and that is what being an entrepreneur demands. You have to keep track of numerous things and yet keep yourself sane enough to take the right decisions. Their natural sensitivity and empathy helps them to bring out the best and yet like a mother they can be hard for the good of the child. Women are in that regard naturally geared and and have always proved themselves worthy. In NET HR 90% of employees are women and even in our other verticals like the Education Company, they make up 60% of the staff.

Business Connect: What are your short term and long term future plans for the company?

Dr. Salunkhe: Short term plans are to keep pushing the envelope and create more business while the long term goal is to steer the company towards the emerging trends to be a leader.

Business Connect: How have you adapted yourself to the latest needs of the market?

Dr. Salunkhe: With a close eye on the new trends in the market, we always mold and update ourselves in a timely fashion. We have an edge on understanding in terms of quality benchmark, ideal to practical turnaround time and right fitment.

Business Connect: What gives you an edge over your peers?

Dr. Salunkhe: What makes us better than our peers is the well experienced, expert and highly motivated team strength we possess. Along with that, we do not rely on the portals only for recruitment as we have a huge base of passive content being in the industry for 19 years which helps us to give a high offer-to-join percentage.

Business Connect: What kind of clients do you serve?

Dr. Salunkhe: Our clientele consists of Top Global Giants from Investment Banking, Financial Services, Information technology (Product & service), Insurance, Banking & Broking and Fin-tech Space.

Business Connect: How do you ensure the unbreakable faith of clients in your company?

Dr. Salunkhe: Having strong ethical mindset, we work with full integrity and honesty and that’s how our client relies on us for 11th-hour support in crisis situations also. Providing quality at right time with right fit has helped us to build an unbreakable faith in all our clients.

Business Connect: Tell us something about your staff. How do you ensure their efficiency and positivity towards work in challenging times?

Dr. Salunkhe: Our team strongly follows the values of the organization. We ensure their efficiency and positivity towards work in challenging times by regular training & grooming of the team, motivating them by giving additional entrepreneurial responsibilities.

Business Connect: Please let us know about the achievements of the company.

Dr. Salunkhe: We have been Top 5 vendors for Majority of our clients for over a decade and with continuous efforts, we intend to be the most preferred vendor.

Dr. Salunkhe avers that in the coming few years AI (Artificial Intelligence) will change a lot of things like an assessment of skills through robotic testing, tracking changes in the way entrepreneurial skills are developed etc. Portions and segments of workplace work will give way to Robots, so that would need a new set of IT people who would be able to track and ensure the Robots perform.

In the future, it is anticipated that the management of the Robots would be a new set of skills and will give way to evolving self-learning Robots. The supervision arm would still have to be Human. Ahead in time, tied to robotics is the entire world of virtual and augmented reality and their use for the medical and other fields that will eventually give rise to a different set of skill needs in IT.

Since the average age of startup founders in the country is 28 years, Millennials and GenZs are well-versed and well-equipped with the technological advancements like AI, machine learning, and even blockchain technology. In fact, startups are more receptive toward the implementation of technological advancements.

Business Connect: Did everything come easy, or do you have a story of struggle?

STI: Nothing comes easy in this industry. As late entrants in the market, we faced fierce competition. But what makes us different from other staffing and recruitment consultancies is our approach to serve our clients and candidates. When we became part of the Aleron group of companies, it became easier to sell the brand to our clients, prospects, and candidates. Superior Talent India is now a trusted brand by companies in a wide variety of the industries.

Business Connect: What kind of clients do you serve? Any special mentions?

STI: We serve prestigious clients from several domains, such as IT, ITES, BFSI, retail and e-commerce, aerospace and aviation, manufacturing, automotive, telecommunications, and semiconductors within the healthcare and pharmaceuticals domain.

Business Connect: How do you keep pace with the changing market trends?

STI: We will continue to evolve as we optimize and streamline recruiting efforts to attract the best, most qualified talent. Also, by keeping up the pace with the dominant trends in the recruitment and staffing industry, we are focusing on how AI impacts the way we do businesses, growing our talent pool, creating a mobile-friendly candidate experience, and most importantly, making personal connections with people.

Business Connect: Do you believe R&D is essential for the growth of the company?

STI: Yes, R&D delivers information based on statistics and data, which is vital to predicting where the

recruitment and staffing industry is headed, what the degree of competition it, and how the lure of progress is perceived.

Business Connect: Do you still come back to work with the same zeal you had when you started?

STI: I like to think so! I know for sure that our team of highly motivated recruiters and sources make sure that their approach is customer-centric, and certainly that can’t happen if you’re not excited about your career. Without a positive perspective, Superior Talent India couldn’t offer the comprehensive, high-quality, cost-efficient service capabilities that we do. I’m talking about end-to-end recruitment services, such as strategic planning, talent brand assessment, sourcing and recruiting, talent relationship management, onboarding, skills assessment, research and reporting, neutral exit interviews, and back-office administration.

Business Connect: What are the achievements and milestones of the company?

STI: We are proud to be recognized by world-class organizations. We have successfully earned a place on the Neo IT Top Outsourcing 100, Fortune Global Outsourcing 100, Fortune Top 10 HR Outsourcers, Gartner Group Top 100 Outsourcers, and more.

Business Connect: What does the future hold for the company?

STI: We want STI to be one of India’s top staffing and recruitment firms for direct placement, contract hire, executive search, and RPO solutions. Our commitment to developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with clients, candidates, and partners— coupled with our industry experience and personalized approach—has already made us a trusted staffing partner to many of the country’s leading organizations, and we’re excited to continue growing.

In the present scenario, with the incorporation of newer and better technologies, the talent requirement vertical is on an all-time rise. Owing to the government’s focus on growing SME and startups (Make in India initiative), the requirement for the best talent pool is on the rise, which is beneficial for the staffing and recruitment Industry. Sectors like IT, telecom, BFSI, and Automotive are all projected to ramp up their hiring numbers.

As per the recent studies, the staffing industry is likely to witness a growth of 12% in the coming years. As the labor market changes, many businesses and organizations must anticipate and tackle their talent requirements. Doing so will lead India’s staffing industry to play a more important role, test their efficiency, and adapt to some of the major shifts that are taking place in the industry, especially as they relate to rapidly changing government policies.
