MEET DR. SURESHKUMAR MADHUSUDHANAN & MR. ABDUL JALEEL MANGALATH

TWO DYNAMIC LEADERS SETTING NEW BENCHMARKS IN OVERSEAS RECRUITMENT

Since the dawn of corporate culture, recruitment has been a critical element in the business fraternity. But onboarding effective people can be cumbersome, which is where recruitment firms come in. They help organizations have the most talented resources, which breeds increased productivity and profitability. In fact, recruitment firms have been integral in improving the corporate landscapes of many developed and emerging economies. But with the evolution of technology and business environment, the recruitment space has become volatile.

I found it interesting to explore this complex interplay of volatility and evolution. After all, nothing is more important than hiring and developing people. You bet on people, not on strategies. Searching for noble paragons got me in touch with two idols, Dr. Sureshkumar Madhusudhanan (Chairman & Managing Director) and Mr. Abdul Jaleel Mangalath (Global CEO) of Seagull International. We had an interesting discussion, and both of them gave us intriguing insights about their industry and the firm. Located in Mumbai, Seagull is an ADNOC ICV certified and ISO 9001:2015 accredited human resource consultancy with a wide reach in India and the Gulf regions. It has a 5-star rating from the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, and is ranked 3rd among all Overseas Manpower Consultancies in India by MEA (eMigrate). The firm leads by the motto, “Client Is Our King; Candidates are Our Assets.”

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

Dr. Sureshkumar has been the core proponent of Seagull’s basking success. He had a natural interest in human resources, which led him to get both an MBA and a Ph.D. in the field. His father began the firm as a travel agency and, ironically, was influential in placing people in overseas professions. This motivated Dr. Sureshkumar to transform this “social hand” into a professional one, thus planting the idea of Seagull. With his decisive leadership, he has earned the firm a coveted name for handling client and

candidate issues and is his team’s idol for countless successes. But times do change! Just because something is growing doesn’t imply it can’t be better. Mr. Abdul Jaleel has been the cornerstone of the much-needed “wind of change” for Seagull. He is a young and dynamic leader with a decade of sound industrial experience in business development and operations. He holds a diploma in effective communication strategies from IIM Ahmadabad and an MBA from Anna University, Chennai. After spending years with various business giants, Mr. Abdul Jaleel joined Seagull in 2019. He committed his decade of expertise and his strong clientele to the expansion of the firm.

Since then, the firm has grown footfalls beyond national boundaries. Today, it has branches in all major cities in India (New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Vizag and Baroda) and overseas operations in Nepal, Sri Lanka, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Sweden & U K. The firm prides itself on a large client base whose growth catalyzes its rise to new heights of excellence. Over 350 companies make up its clientele, and operates in more than 30 countries.

A NICHE FOR TRUST & INTEGRITY

Seagull positions itself at a cut above the rest through its valuebased recruitment model. But there is a deep reason behind it. Dr. Sureshkumar is the current Secretary General of the Indo-Gulf & Middle East Chamber of Commerce (INMECC). Before that, he was the National General Secretary of the Federation of Overseas Recruitment Associations of India (FORAI) and the General Secretary of the Indian Personnel Export Promotion Council (IPEPCIL). Mr. Abdul Jaleel has over a decade of experience in handling overseas recruitment at various companies. He is also the National Chief Director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation of India (ACFI), one of the coveted NGOs in India for anticorruption campaigns and awareness. He is also an advisor to REDIO (Rescue Every Distressed Indian Overseas) in the UAE.

Throughout their tenures, one consistent concern was the rising unethical and fiscal means impeding overseas recruitment. “We saw businesses accepting bribes, making false promises, and ultimately keeping the candidate in the dark,” claims the CMD. They believed that recruitment should be centered on learning about candidates—their motivations, passions, interests, and whether they’ll fit into the desired organization and roles. They could not bear this, so they devised a criterion for moral conduct in their trade. The CEO explains, “Instead of interfering with long-standing customs, we set anti-corruption policies, a code of ethics, and devised a sophisticated modus operandi.” Seagull is also among the rare ones accredited by UKAS, URS, and IAF. 90% of its hiring is free, and it has a “Zero Tolerance Policy” against bribery and corruption, making it a stronghold against labour exploitation. The ethical practice makes it a valued recruitment partner across the Gulf while also aiding to India’s goal on cutting its unemployment rate.

ADAPTIVE TO CHANGING SCENARIOS

Besides ethical conduct, Seagull is armed with all the industrygrade innovations. Given how fast the world is changing and how the HR sector is innovating to increase its efficiency, flexibility, and productivity, Seagull is also evolving its corporate structure to adhere to advancements. The firm utilizes tech throughout its hiring process, from candidate evaluations to virtual interviews, applicant tracking, resume screening, background checks, and onboarding. Also, it has a robust online presence that enables it to schedule postings in advance, monitor responses, and gather data to better target future campaigns for hiring and enhance clients’ image in the job market.

Staying attuned to innovations also gives it an upperhand against economic obstructions. “We have endured some of the most notable hurdles, like the 1993 Mumbai bombing, which crippled Indian staffing abroad, the Great Recession of 2006, the GCC region’s economic slowdown and political unrest in 2018–

Abdul Jaleel Mangalath Global CEO HR & Recruitment Industry in India

19, COVID–19, and the conflict in Russia-Ukraine which is erratically influencing the Middle Eastern economy’s turmoil,” explains Dr. Sureshkumar. In the end, Seagull goes to every ext ent to meet its commitments while keeping its sails high.

EMPOWERMENT: A CORE FOCUS

Despite having all the latest technologies and certifications, nothing can match the dynamic talent that Seagull has on board. Each member, even though they are spread across countries, works independently and takes ownership of their responsibilities. This makes them self-dependent and releases pressure from a single shoulder. While both Dr. Sureshkumar and Mr. Abdul Jaleel are idols to their team, the idea of a decentralized work culture is one of the major transformations fostered by the CEO.The emphasis on empowerment doubled with the launch of SITT (Seagull Institute of Technical Training). The agency pioneers the vision of our honorable Prime Minister for making India as the skill capital of the world, working on vocational training for skills development, upskilling, and training in accordance with the needs of different clients in India, the Middle East, Europe, etc. Its goal is to give youth a strong technical education and suitable employment prospects. In the end, the firm has a dual focus that ensures the growth of in-house resources and the talent pool.

SAVORING MILESTONES…YET MILES TO GO “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” It goes without saying that Seagull’s journey to the zenith is the result of the hard work and determination of many people. But in the end, without its leaders, it would have been impossible, especially Dr. SureshKumar. His leadership has earned the firm numerous accolades namely: • “ASSOCHAM Service Excellence Award (in 2017& 2018)” for quality and innovation in HR • Economic Times ET NOW HR Talent Management Leadership Award for best overall overseas recruiting & staffing organization of the year in the 26TH WORLD HRD CONGRESS 2018 • HDM Award for Best Recruitment Service Provider in the Indian HR Convention 2017 • Best CEO Award by leading Malayalam Financial daily Future Kerala in 2018 • ICV Certification in 2019 from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, ADNOC • Best Overseas Recruitment Consultant in the 28th World HRD Congress held in Feb 2020 • Brand of the Year 2020 by CEO Magazine in the Global Human Resource Management category

The Unbeatable Market Survival Strategies

The team currently places a greater emphasis on digital marketing techniques to advance their brand. They would like to run radio and small-town newspaper ads before the end of the year that is directed at India’s rural areas.

Agribid’s Insights on Leadership

“The action of leading a group of people or an organisation.” That is how the Oxford Dictionary defines leadership. But in simpler words, leadership is about taking risks and challenging the status quo. Leaders inspire followers to accomplish something more significant and newer. Leaders use the accomplishments and knowledge gained by the team to gauge success.

Transformation In the Startup Ecosystem

The startup ecosystem is constantly evolving; the only thing that remains consistent is the passion for finding solutions. Indian entrepreneurs are on the right track to providing superior goods and services as the nation has one of the most significant numbers of unicorns today.

Significance of R&D

At Agribid, R&D is considered the core of any business. Without R&D, they contend, the vision cannot be realised. Based on input from the research team and information they get from the ground, they have made numerous changes to the platform. Therefore, indeed, it aids in decision-making.

Future Prospects for Agribid

The company has already raised its 1st round of investments and is eager to expand its operations. They plan to expand the Indian base from 11 to 23 states and its Global presence from 3 countries to 9 by the end of this Financial Year. This geographical reach guarantees that the company’s turnover, revenue, and customer base will experience steady growth.

Further, they are focused on output sales in phase I. While in phase II, they plan to get into inputs such as seed, pesticide, fertiliser, etc. In the near future, the Agribid team hopes to serve as a one-stop destination for all agricultural-related trades.

Words of Wisdom to the Budding Entrepreneurs

Do not look to solve problems that do not exist. It is crucial to choose the problem statement you hope to address carefully. Spend more time on the ground, take notes, and learn from feedback. Before attempting to disrupt the market, do your research.

ATISHAY LIMITED

A RECOGNIZED IT FIRM BUILDING CONTINUOUS STRIDES IN INDIA’S E-GOVERNANCE

Indranil Roy | Business Connect

From redefining how businesses once operated to keeping them aligned with trends and thriving, technology is constantly expanding its horizons. A core driver of this transformation is software-as-aservice (SaaS). They offer an intriguing alternative to traditional software systems, which need a dedicated server besides installation and configuration. SaaS apps are scalable and versatile, which makes them easier to use and produce proofs-of-concept. They also enable users to profit more quickly and pay less in maintenance costs, thus making them preferred in both private and public sectors.

As an emerging media house that seeks to see concepts thrive, we find the idea of SaaS an “Era-defining innovation.” Our editors swotted through the market to find a reckoning player, bringing us to Atishay Ltd. We had a thoughtful conversation with Mr. Akhilesh Jain (Chairman and Managing Director) and Archit Jain (Director), who enunciated what makes the firm unique in the software space. Our conversation is articulated in the piece below.

ESTABLISHING ITS FOOTINHG

Atishay was founded in 1989 as a government IT contract vendor. In the years, it undertook several projects like processing university results, developing cadastral maps of districts, generating voter ID cards, etc., building its path to becoming a Pvt. Ltd. firm in 2000. It worked on significant state public projects like voter list creation, ID card printing, and even Aadhar Card enrollment over the ensuing ten years. A record of successes eventually got it listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange on its SME Platform in 2013, and in 2016, it got migrated to main board.

The firm didn’t look back after that. Atishay has grown as a delineated IT firm committed to accelerating the use of software services to increase its clients’ productivity. The firm offers SaaS products for public bodies and banks. For the public sector, it creates portals, G2C solutions, staffing solutions, and big data management. For banks, it offers payment products that connect banks, service providers, vendors, and customers nationwide. To cut it short, the firm is committed to introducing high-impact solutions that exceed client expectations, meet critical market needs, and enhance overall e-Governance experience.

AN INDIVIDUALIZED APPROACH TO CLIENTS

Personalization is a crucial differentiator in the modern business world. Given the fierce competition in the market today, a customized setting makes a business more customercentric, gives the client a sense of being heard and cared for, allowing it to stand out. Atishay has based its 3 decades of sustenance on this notion. Every client has unique needs, and the firm caters to them accordingly.

“We undertake extensive client analysis using a consultancy approach, identifying their needs and shaping them into solutions,”

Mr. Jain

They follow a MIS-driven approach with meticulous planning and execution, keeping things “simple and functional.” Atishay is a pioneer in the software industry. Their success mantra has been the end-to-end strategy and active listening. It has weathered many trials and has built a reputation for exceptional quality. It has created reliable internal systems that duly exceed client expectations and adhere to schedules.

OFFERINGS PARTICULAR TO SPECIFIC NEEDS

Innovation and R&D goes hand-in-hand, and are the cornerstones of Atishay. And its evident from its innovative products. A broad understanding of what makes the products standout are as follows:

• e-Sahyog: The platform is built to redefine how the primary agriculture co-operative society (PACS) branch operates. With only one click, its centralized design automates every process, even laborious jobs like GST Calculation and Reports at Society Level!

• TracVec: As the name suggests, it’s a GPS-based tracking software that can track vehicles, luggage, and belongings. Users will have real-time information on the minute details of the item’s location and usage.

• Zapurse: v This platform is Atishay’s digital arm and most exclusive innovation. It’s a self-service portal that offers banking, FasTAG, utility bill payment, DMT, mATM, AePS, recharge, and other options. The platform gives Atisahay a PAN-India presence with over 10,000 retail touch points. It has a network of over 23,000 agents who offer more than 4 lakh customers throughout the country various financial services, like cash deposits and cash withdrawals.

The products accurately reflect the company’s attention to new technologies. As one of India’s early IT pioneers, Atishay is always at the forefront of technology. This helps them expand organically and offers them a critical edge in a tight market.

THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE BEHIND THE INNOVATIONS

Without innovations, a company cannot function, but without an effective team, it is a ship ready to sink. As such, Atishay has been diligent in both areas. The team personifies a deep desire to succeed, has unwavering

WHAT IS NAVIC

AND WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT REQUIRE IT FOR EVERY SMARTPHONE?

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has developed a regional satellite navigation system called NavIC. The name is an acronym for ‘Navigation with Indian Constellation’. It is similar to the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the United States, but with a few differences. For one, it is designed to be more accurate for the region it covers. Secondly, it is meant to be used for other purposes such as disaster management, vehicle tracking, and so on.

The Indian government recently announced that they are mandating that all smartphones sold in the country must have support for NavIC, their version of GPS. This has caused some confusion among consumers, so let’s take a look at what NavIC is and why the government wants it on all smartphones.

WHAT IS NAVIC?

The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, also known as NavIC, is a satellite-based navigation system that provides accurate real-time positioning and timing services. It is designed to provide position, velocity and time measurements within India and its surrounding region, up to an elevation of 1500 meters. The system consists of a constellation of seven satellites, three in geostationary orbit (GEO) and four in inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO). The GEO satellites are positioned over the equator at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers.

They remain stationary with respect to the Earth’s surface and revolve around the planet at the same speed as the Earth’s rotation. The IGSO satellites are positioned at an inclination of 29 degrees with respect to the equator. They appear to move from west to east with respect to the stars owing to their orbital motion. The NavIC system provides two types of services: Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and Restricted Service (RS). The SPS is provided free of charge and can be used by anyone with a compatible receiver. The RS is encrypted and is intended for use by authorized users such as the Indian armed forces.

The NavIC constellation is completed by two more satellites, IRS-P8(I) and IRS-P8(A), which serve as backups for the other seven satellites. All seven satellites are equipped with Rubidium atomic clocks that provide highly accurate timekeeping.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NAVIC?

India’s space agency ISRO has developed an indigenous satellite navigation system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), as an alternative to the American GPS. The system consists of a constellation of seven satellites, three in geostationary orbit and four in inclined geosynchronous orbit. The main benefit of NavIC is that it will provide accurate Position, Velocity and Time (PVT) information to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1500 km from its boundary, which is its primary service area. In addition, it will also provide two types of supplementary services – Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and Restricted Service (RS). While the former is available to all users, the latter is meant for authorized users only.

www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 4 | Special Edition October 2022 INDIA 30 Technology

SOME OF THE KEY BENEFITS OF NAVIC ARE:

- It will be useful for fishermen and others who operate near the coast as it can provide accurate information on position, velocity and time even in challenging environments with heavy tree cover or mountainous regions.

- It will help in better disaster management as real-time data on location and movement of people and vehicles can be used for effective rescue and relief operations. - It has potential applications in fields such as mapping and surveying, navigation for motorists and aircraft, timing for railways and power grids etc.

THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN FOR NAVIC

The government’s plan for NavIC is to provide a more accurate and reliable navigation and timing service for India that is independent of the Global Positioning System (GPS). The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is the name of the navigation satellite constellation, which consists of seven satellites. The system has been designed to provide accurate position information service to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1500 km from its boundary, covering most of South Asia. The government plans to make NavIC technology mandatory in all smartphones sold in India so that people can take full advantage of its benefits. This would mean that phone manufacturers would need to ensure that their devices are compatible with the system. The move is likely to benefit not just consumers but also businesses that rely on accurate location data for their operations.

WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT WANT NAVIC ON ALL SMARTPHONES?

The government believes that having NavIC on all smartphones will help boost the adoption of the technology, and it will also allow more people to benefit from its accuracy. In addition, the government sees NavIC as a key part of its plans to build a robust digital infrastructure in the country. By making

NavIC available to all smartphone users, the government hopes to encourage more businesses and developers to create applications and services that make use of the technology.

HOW WILL NAVIC BE USED?

NavIC, is a constellation of eight satellites that provide accurate positional information for users in India and the region extending up to 1500 km around it. The system is similar to GPS but is more accurate, with a position accuracy of up to 5 meters.

The Indian government plans to make NavIC available to all smartphone users in the country, so that they can benefit from its improved accuracy. In addition to improving navigation for regular users, NavIC will also be used by emergency services and the military.

There are a number of ways in which NavIC can be used: Regular users: The most obvious use for NavIC is as a navigation aid for regular users. The system can be used for tasks such as planning routes, tracking location, and geotagging photos. Emergency services: NavIC can be used by emergency services such as ambulance and fire services to improve their response times. The system can be used to track the location of vehicles and personnel, so that they can be deployed more efficiently. Military: The military will also make use of NavIC’s improved accuracy for tasks such as targeting weapons and guiding missiles.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH NAVIC?

Yes, there are some risks associated with NavIC. The most significant risk is that the system is not yet fully operational. There are also potential risks associated with the use of NavIC signals for timing purposes. These signals could be disrupted by space weather or other factors, which could lead to inaccurate timing information. Finally, there is a risk that the system could be used for military purposes, which could pose a threat to international security.

CHIPSETS SUPPORTING INDIA’S NAVIC NAVIGATION SYSTEM

India’s NavIC navigation system is supported by a number of chipsets, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 855 and 865. Other chipsets that support NavIC include the MediaTek Helio G90T, P60 and P70. NavIC is India’s own navigation system, which was developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). It is similar to the US-based GPS system, but with a few notable differences. One of the main advantages of NavIC over GPS is its accuracy. While GPS has an accuracy of around 5 meters, NavIC can achieve an accuracy of up to 20 meters. This makes it ideal for use in precision applications such as mapping and surveying.

Another advantage of NavIC is its coverage. While GPS only covers around 70% of the world’s surface, NavIC has coverage over 95% of India’s landmass. This makes it much more useful

for those living in rural areas or remote regions. The government has been pushing for all smartphones sold in India to support NavIC. This is because it believes that having a domestic navigation system will be beneficial for both national security and disaster management purposes.

WHY ARE SOME COUNTRIES LOOKING BEYOND GPS?

There are a few reasons why some countries are looking beyond GPS for their navigation needs. One reason is that GPS can be inaccurate in certain areas, especially when there are tall buildings or other obstructions. Another reason is that GPS signals can be jammed or spoofed, which can cause problems for navigation. Finally, GPS is a U.S.-based system, so other countries may want to have their own navigation system that they can control. NavIC (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) is one such alternative navigation system that is being developed by India.

CONCLUSION

The Indian government’s push for NavIC support on all smartphones is a move that will likely benefit the country in the long run. With better positioning accuracy, NavIC can be used for a variety of applications such as disaster management, fleet tracking, and mapping. While there are some challenges that need to be addressed before NavIC can be fully integrated into smartphones, it is clear that the technology has great potential and could very well become an essential part of our lives in the future.

Consumers unconsciously contradict themselves.

Q&Q decodes it with the Market Research through Real People, Real Insights™

Q&Q is almost a 2-decade old market research firm pioneering agriculture market research and became the only Indian company to make a mark in the Asian agriculture research space, competing with MNC’s that used to dominate the market then.

For over 15 years, Priyanka Mallick has been at the forefront of market research in India. Ms. Mallick has been instrumental in shifting analytical models from those based on self-reported consumer behavior to the fusion of data from a broad variety of sources, including the integration of consumers’ passive online and offline behavior. Priyanka is also an independent director on the board of Shree Renuka Sugars (A Wilmar Company).

She graduated from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai and continued her study in the Aberty University, UK, where she specialized in biotechnology.

HI PRIYANKA, HOW HAS MARKET RESEARCH EVOLVED IN THE LAST COUPLE OF DECADES?

I believe the core essence of market research has remained the same since eons. We understand the client’s needs, speak to consumers, and generate insights that clients can use to create strategies for branding/improving their sales/reach, etc.

Since Q&Q specializes in rural research and serves the agriculture sector in the APAC region, what we see is a significant increase in the utilization of market research across all kinds of decision-making. Earlier, it was a few large MNCs who did

www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 4 | Special Edition October 2022 INDIA 38
ICONIC AGRICULTURE Brand to watch in 2022

the usual brand tracking and utilized the data, but today, small domestic companies and even agri-tech startups are using MR to understand their consumers better. An industry that was largely driven by “gut feeling” is now relying on numbers and insights.

In terms of methodology, top agriculture brands are now relying on conjoint-based price methods to derive value pricing for their brand launches or even brand price corrections. This has all happened in the last 5–10 years, and I say the future of MR looks better than ever before.

SOMETIMES, IT MUST BE A HUMUNGOUS CHALLENGE TO BRING COMPLEX DATA AND CONSUMER BEHAVIOR TO THE BOARDROOM. CAN YOU SHARE A FEW OF YOUR DAY-TODAY CHALLENGES IN THIS JOURNEY?

We strive really hard to make fancy-looking presentations, but what goes on behind the scenes is hardly anything close to fancy. I think the biggest challenge we face is that clients never have time. We usually need to turn around research projects within a few weeks. Q&Q is blessed to have one of the best operations (Fieldwork) teams who have been instrumental in helping us deliver on time and sometimes even before time reports.

The key challenge in market research is always gathering good quality data, from the right consumers within a limited timeframe. Often our operations team are given a few days to set up a huge data collection team, say, across 5 states and 1500 consumers covering 20 districts. They work 10–12 hours every day, visit the most rural parts of the country, search for mobile networks to deliver data to our in-city offices so that QC is done and any inconsistencies are sent back to the field on time for checking back. Sometimes things go wrong, but they are there night and day to solve it for us so that the data that finally goes on those presentations is accurate and reliable.

HAS IT EVER HAPPENED THAT THE CONSUMERS THEMSELVES DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY WANT CONSCIOUSLY? WHAT KIND OF APPROACH DO YOU USE TO UNDERSTAND THEIR TRUE INTENTIONS? We have often seen; consumers contradict themselves. In qualitative research methodologies, we use several projective techniques, role plays, and games that help us decode what the consumer really wants (not merely what he says he wants).

Quantitative methods can be more challenging, however. Often research tools like questionnaires are designed to capture such inconsistencies of data. We also take care of consistencies by minimizing sampling and non-sampling data errors.

Agriculture being the 2nd biggest sector of Indian Economy will see its growth from data-based decision making by 2025.

MOST OF THE NATIONAL OR REGIONAL FIRMS IN INDIA, STILL GO WITH THEIR INSTINCT AND BYPASS THE MARKET RESEARCH PROCESS? AS AN ENTREPRENEUR WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THAT? IS IT RIGHT TO STAKE MILLIONS OF INVESTMENTS ON AN INSTINCT?

That’s an interesting question. Instinct is great. I usually love following my instincts too! But when millions are at stake, and something doesn’t work - where do you go?. The question is who shoulders the blame.

Often, in MNCs, decisions cannot be made by a single person’s gut feeling alone, and hence, research data is usually needed to make informed decisions.

Times are changing now. The leadership structure in regional, domestic, or family-run businesses is changing. There is much more professionalism, and we have seen a change in the way such companies are doing business in the last 1 decade.

Something triggers the use of research data that comes from creative or ad agencies, sometimes from investors, sometimes from a new CEO who comes from a previously research-savvy organization. Whatever be it, we know that once people start using research data, there is no going back! Like they say - it’s a one-way street (wink).

YOU’RE ALSO IN TOP 5 MARKET RESEARCH COMPANIES IN INDIA AND YOU’VE WON SEVERAL AWARDS TOO. CAN YOU TELL US NOW WHAT Q&Q IS AIMING FOR NOW?

Thank you. I believe we have always been doing different work. It’s only in the last few years that we have become recognized by large platforms like the Market Research Society of India, Iris Network (which is a global network of agencies), etc.

Whilst doing good quality work is always a priority for us, we do hope to become a name synchronous with agriculture market research across the world. Today we work in 10+ markets, mainly in the APAC markets. The next step for us will be growth in the EU market.

Apart from just growing in terms of countries, clients, and type of projects we do, we are also actively working towards becoming more technology enabled and serving the major need gaps in the market. Finally, something we are passionate about is putting our people first. We aim to become a company that people aspire to be part of.

HOW CAN MARKET RESEARCH HELP THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR IN COMING YEARS?

By 2025, the Indian economy will be worth 5 trillion dollars, which is up from 3.05 trillion dollars (236.65 lakh crores) in 2021-22. We will be the 5th biggest economy in the world. The Govt. has introduced structural reforms like Production Linked Incentives (PLI) schemes to reach this target. In reference to GVA (Gross Value Added), agriculture is the 2nd biggest in this sector after the service industry. Considering 20% of the contribution from agriculture by 2025, the value of this sector will reach up to 50.9 lakh crores. Thus, higher the stakes, the greater the need for data, consumer behavior, and insights. Market research will become the need of the hour. We will see the growth of data-based decision making. The government and various input companies will need to harness farmer data to run schemes, provide services and products to them. This, in addition to growing digitalization in rural India, will make it imperative to understand the changing consumer behavior.

www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 4 | Special Edition October 2022 INDIA 46

Unilever’s portfolio includes some of the best-known and most loved brands such as Dove, Knorr, Lipton, and Hellmann’s. Personal care, which brought in roughly 21.9 billion euros in revenue in 2021, is the Unilever Group’s largest product category. In that year, the group as a whole disclosed sales of almost 52.44 billion euros.

In this article, while exploring some of the company’s most successful brands and marketing campaigns, we trace Unilever’s journey from a small soap maker to the multinational giant it is today. Read on!

THE EARLY DAYS OF UNILEVER

Unilever was founded in the late 19th century, and has since become one of the world’s leading multinational corporations. The company began as a soap manufacturer, and has since expanded into areas such as food, home care, and personal care products.

Unilever has a long history of innovation, starting with the development of new soap recipes in the early days of the company. One of Unilever’s first major innovations was the introduction of sunlight soap, which was made using a new process that allowed for a higher quality product than previously available. Unilever also pioneered the use of vegetable oils in soapmaking, which led to the development of many popular brands such as Dove and Pears.

In addition to its soap businesses, Unilever also built up a successful food business starting in the early 1900s. The company acquired several well-known brands, such as Hellmann’s mayonnaise and Knorr soups. Unilever also developed new products such as Flora margarine and Lipton tea. Over the years, Unilever has continued to grow through both internal expansion and strategic acquisitions. Today, the company is a leading player in many different markets around the world.

THE COMPANY’S TRANSFORMATION

In the late 1800s, Unilever was founded as a soap manufacturer in the United Kingdom. The company’s transformation began in the early 1900s when it started to expand its product range beyond soap. By the mid-1900s, Unilever had become a multinational giant, with products ranging from food to detergents. Today, Unilever is a household name, with products sold in over 190 countries around the world.

The company has managed to adapt and change with the times, while still maintaining its core values. Unilever is a great example of how a company can grow and succeed on a global scale.

UNILEVER’S PRODUCTS AND BRANDS

Unilever is one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies with a portfolio that includes some of the most recognizable brands in the world. Unilever’s products are divided into four main categories: food, home care, personal care, and refreshment.

Some of Unilever’s best-known brands include Lipton, Knorr, Hellmann’s, Dove, Omo/Surf, Ben & Jerry’s, Lifebuoy, Sunsilk, Lux, Sunlight, Rexona/Degree, Axe/Lynx, Omo/ Persil, Heartbrand (Wall’s) ice creams, Hellmann’s, and Magnum.

HOW UNILEVER HAS SUCCEEDED

There are several factors that have contributed to Unilever’s success. Firstly, the company has diversified its product range significantly over the years. While it started out as a soap manufacturer, it now sells a wide range of food, home care, and personal care products. This has helped it to tap into different markets and grow its customer base.

Secondly, Unilever has made strategic acquisitions of other companies over the years which have helped to boost its growth. Some notable examples include the acquisition of Best Foods in 2000 and Dove in 2007. These acquisitions have allowed Unilever to enter new markets and gain access to new technologies and capabilities.

Thirdly, Unilever has invested heavily in marketing and advertising over the years. This has helped it to build strong brand equity for its products and create a loyal customer base. Some iconic advertising campaigns that have been run by Unilever include ‘Surf Excel’, ‘Dove’, and ‘Lipton’.

Fourthly, Unilever has adopted an aggressive expansion strategy which has seen it enter new markets and set up operations in countries all over the world.

THE FUTURE OF UNILEVER

Today, Unilever sells its products in more than 190 countries and employs over 172,000 people.

Looking to the future, Unilever has set itself some ambitious goals. It wants to double its size while reducing its environmental impact and increasing its positive social impact. This means growing its business in a sustainable way that benefits both people and the planet.

To achieve these goals, Unilever is investing in innovation and technology. It is also working to build closer relationships with its customers and communities. These efforts will help Unilever continue to thrive in the years to come.

FINAL WORDS

From its humble beginnings as a soap manufacturer, Unilever has grown into a multinational giant, with operations in over 190 countries and products sold in over 170 of them. The company has achieved this through a combination of organic growth and astute acquisitions, and its portfolio today includes some of the world’s most iconic brands. Unilever is a true success story, and its journey from small-scale manufacturer to global powerhouse is an inspiration to businesses everywhere.

Samsung is also one of the biggest software and electronics companies in the world. The South Korean company, which is among the top ten global corporations, is well known for its electronics but has expanded into a wide range of other items. South Korean native Lee Byung-Chul, who was born in Daegu City, founded Samsung in 1938. He belonged to a large landowning family at the time of its founding.

Samsung Net Worth, Revenue

Samsung’s market capitalization as of October 2022 is $262.80 billion. According to the research, this puts Samsung as the 27th most valuable corporation in the world by market cap. The market capitalization, often called as market cap, is a measure of a company’s value that considers all of the outstanding shares of a publicly listed company. Samsung Electronics reported sales of about 77.2 trillion South Korean won, or 57.36 billion U.S. dollars, in the second quarter of 2022. Samsung was established in 1938 by Lee Byung-Chul, a native of Daegu City in South Korea. He came from a large land-owning family. The business, which started out as a tiny trading firm specialising in dried fish, grains, and noodles and employing about forty people, was known as Samsung Sanghoe. Lee moved the company’s headquarters to Seoul in 1947 as the business expanded. He founded a sugar refinery in Susan and later the biggest woollen mill in Daegu, both of which are still in business today. Lee set out to achieve his goals because he wanted Samsung to become a leader in a variety of areas.

Future

By 2025, Samsung hopes to have 2nm process technology in mass manufacturing, and by 2027, 1.4nm.

• Samsung intends to more than triple its production capacity for advanced nodes by 2027.

• HPC and automotive are anticipated to account for more than 50% of its foundry portfolio by 2027.

• Samsung Foundry improves its partner ecosystem’s ability to provide customer assistance.

• The company plans to develop products and activities that reduce environmental impact, accommodate customer lifestyles, and provide truly seamless smart home experiences in order to create a more sustainable, customizable, and connected future.

• To increase the use of recycled material while reducing single use plastic from its packaging by 2025.

• Moreover, the organisation is starting a hiring drive that will result in the creation of 80,000 new employment by the year 2026, or “about 16,000 positions yearly.”

The corporate world pays less heed to this talented pool of human resources but team Karimganj believes in including their capabilities in creating an impact.

And team Karimganj never fails to meet the expectations of the employees. “We have ensured many of our employees with 300% salary hike in a single year. They started managing teams after 2 months of joining as a junior analyst, given access to the company finances within a year of joining the company or managing a team of much older analysts at the age of 23. The average age of the employees of the company is 24.5 and anonymous surveys have revealed that most of them would like to work in TK for the rest of their lives. This is because we follow an extremely lively and friendly office culture. Even the junior-most employee of TK can enter the office of the CEO by just knocking at his door and most of them can call him even at 2 am in the morning.” reveals Arpita.

The events and parties hosted by Team Karimganj are said to be legendary across the town. This has indeed provided the employees with a specific social status and respect in the remote town they are located in. Moreover, the management ensures that each and every individual is equally involved

in the decision-making process of the company, which is one of the essential aspects behind their exponential growth factor.

FEATHERS IN THE CAP

The biggest accomplishment in itself is the fact that Team Karimganj is the first technology company in Northeast India that is strictly serving only western technology companies. Their analysts are working in different hi-tech projects for some of the top technology and social media companies in the world. What started as 6 people in 2019 has now multiplied into 140+ people today- headcount growth of 2300% in 3 years. Not only this, they have also witnessed a 4000% growth in revenue in the last three years.

Enhancing employment opportunities for talented individuals is the adamant vision set up by Team Karimgang. “We fervently believe that small towns and villages in India have got an enormous pool of extremely talented youngsters. They can take on any challenge thrown at them. All they need is an opportunity to prove themselves and proper guidance. Unfortunately, this talented pool of human resources remains largely untapped by the corporate world. Team Karimganj’s mission is to be a platform for the youth of the region and serve as an intermediary for connecting these talents with the global supply chain. And we have so far been extremely successful in achieving that,” conveyed the leading lady in her part.

THE FUTURISTIC VISION

It has been estimated that India will be the world’s talent factory with 20% of the globe’s working population in the coming years- making the century ‘an Indian century’. And this is where, Team Karimgang wishes to target and create an ecosystem that could allow other smaller towns of India to be benefitted from this scenario. “We strive to make Team Karimganj not just a national but a global talent hub of skilled professionals,” concluded Arpita Roy.
