ir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson, often referred to as Richard Branson, is a British business tycoon best known for founding the Virgin Group, which includes more than 400 firms. According to Forbes’ 2011 list of billionaires, Branson is the fifth-richest person in the UK with an estimated net worth of USD 4.2 billion. Everything from credit cards to flights and music “megastores” bears the internationally renowned “Virgin” name. With his marketing strategies and balloon escapades, he has the ability to draw media attention.

Early Life

The Rolling Stones and Ozzy Osbourne were two more wellknown Virgin artists. Virgin Music, which has offices in Germany, France, and Japan, was one of the top six record labels at the end of the decade. Branson paid $180,000 to acquire Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands in 1979.

Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950 in Blackheath, London. His father Edward James Branson was a barrister and mother Eve Branson a former ballet dancer and air hostess. He has two sisters and his grandfather was a judge of the High Court of Justice.

• 1980s

Branson struggled academically in school as he had dyslexia. Until the age of thirteen, he attended Scaitcliffe School for his education. Then, until the age of sixteen, he attended Stowe School. Early on, he started to exhibit entrepreneurial tendencies, and with time, he learned how to build relationships.

In 1981, Virgin Books and Virgin Video were established. Within two years, more than 50 distinct businesses with total annual revenues of more than $17 million were a part of Branson’s corporate empire. In 1984, Branson teamed up with attorney Randolph Fields to start Virgin Atlantic, one of his most well-known businesses to date. The airline’s stellar customer service and cutting-edge onboard amenities, like complimentary ice cream, seat-back TV screens, and in-flight massages, helped it take off.

Branson got into the publication of a magazine named “Student” at the age of 16. Soon in 1970, he decided to stop continuing his education and instead started a mail-order company for audio records. He took the risk and started Virgin Records, a chain of record shops in 1972 which was later renamed as Virgin Megastore. In the 1980s, the brand expanded rapidly. Later, Branson founded Virgin Atlantic Airways and expanded the Virgin Records music label.

• 1990s

In order to keep Virgin Atlantic operational, Branson had to sell Virgin Records, which was very close to his heart, for $1 billion in 1992. For Virgin Atlantic, these were turbulent years. People refrained from travelling due to terrorist incidents, and its larger rival British Airways was engaged, as described by Branson, in a hostile campaign targeted to damage Virgin Atlantic permanently.

Personal Life

Branson became Sir Richard Branson in 1999 after receiving a Knighthood for his contributions to entrepreneurship. He lives in London at the moment and is married with two kids. Even he owns an island called Necker Island.

Branson successfully prosecuted British Airways for defamation, and in 1993 the judge ordered British Airways to pay Branson and Virgin $945,000 in damages, along with legal costs estimated at almost $3 million, and to issue an apology. Later, in 1997, Branson launches Virgin Trains.

His autobiography, “Losing My Virginity: How I’ve Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way,” is quite successful wherein he discusses his professional accomplishments, travels, and personal history.

• 2000s

Virgin Group and Sprint established Virgin Mobile as a joint venture in 2001. Sprint shut down Virgin Mobile in 2020 and switched customers to Boost Mobile.

His journey

The Virgin Group is involved in leisure, travel, tourism, mobile, broadband, TV, radio, music festivals, finance, and health, with almost 400 enterprises in over 30 countries. Let’s take a peek into his journey.

In September 2004, Branson once more focused on the sky and teamed with American aeronautical engineer Burt Rutan to develop Virgin Galactic, which would use authorised spacecraft to transport visitors into space. Branson envisioned offering affordable space travel.

• 1960s

When Richard Branson was 16 years old, he launched his ‘Student’ magazine, which included celebrity interviews and sold about $8,000 worth of advertising in its debut issue. To promote his magazine, the kid dropped out of school.

The launch date of the first commercial space flights was delayed due to a regrettable chain of incidents, which included a disaster in 2014. They completed their first successful, fully crewed space mission in 2021. Branson had enrolled 800 clients as of 2022.

He established a mail-order record company in 1969, using the magazine office as its operating base.

Branson now owns four businesses that are dedicated to space. In addition to Virgin Galactic, the company also runs Virgin Orbit for freight, VOX for government missions, and the Spaceship Company, which, as its name suggests, constructs spacecraft.

The new company was founded by Branson and his 20-person team under the name Virgin.

• 1970s

Branson established Virgin Mail Order Records in 1970. He had a rough beginning, but by 1972 he had grown to operate 14 record stores. In 1972, he founded the record company Virgin Records using the money from his network of record shops, and in 1973, Virgin Records recording artist Mike Oldfield sold more than 5 million copies of his single, “Tubular Bells,” giving him his first million-dollar payday.

At Present

Branson’s willingness to sign the Sex Pistols and other controversial musicians contributed to some of his early success at Virgin Records.

Branson also started social activism initiatives like Virgin Unite to fight HIV and AIDS and the Branson Center of Entrepreneurship to train entrepreneurs in underdeveloped nations.

Branson is looking deeper into the future with his most recent investment in Hyperloop One, a firm that is developing highspeed transportation and cargo pods that move at 250 miles per hour. To get that speed, magnetic levitation pushes the pods on top of a track, producing airline speeds that enable the pods to travel across great distances.

NORTH SENTINEL ISLAND In Indian Ocean: Why Visitors Are Banned?

Location of Sentinel Island

North Sentinel is one of the islands of Andaman Islands-a chain island controlled by India- in the Bay of Bengal which also includes South Sentinel Island. The island chain is much closer to Myanmar and Thailand than to the main land of India.North Sentinel falls 36 km west of the town of Wandoor in South Andaman Island and 59 km north from South Sentinel Island. The island, which has a total area of about 59.67 square km is surrounded by coral reefs and lacks natural harbours. The entire island is full of forest and a narrow white sand beach encircles the island.

ndia has forbidden its nationals from travelling to North Sentinel Island or seeking to communicate with the residents there. It’s prohibited to go within three miles of the island. The Sentinelese people have a reputation for being violent and hostile to strangers. They reside on a square island, which is largely covered with forest and mostly unknown. In 2006, when two fishermen washed up on the strand, the tribe attacked

happened when John Allen Chau, a young American, was killed by islanders in 2018. He paid a bribe of INR 20,000 to the fisherman to carry him there.

The Sentinelese are hunter and gatherer. They consume plants and animals that they find on their island and in the surrounding seas. According to experts, this probably contains fish, fruits, eggs from seagulls and turtles, tiny mammals, and fish. Using resources from the island, the tribe also crafts its own weaponry. Bows and arrows, daggers, and spears are a few of these.

Anthropologist Anup Kapur said, “the Sentinelese want to be left alone.” The Sentinelese are thought to have moved from Africa some 50,000 years ago, but much is still unknown about their lives. Anvita Abbi, an expert on the tribal languages of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands who has spent decades researching them, said, “We do not even know how many of them are there.” Experts assume that a few dozen to several hundred people live on the forbidden island. It is unknown what language they speak or how ancient it is, according to Abbi. Nobody is able to contact these individuals. “Why should we bother a community that has survived for tens of thousands of years only for our curiosity, ‘’ she questioned? Indian authorities have strictly restricted trips to North Sentinel for years, with interaction limited to very infrequent “gift-giving” meetings in which small teams of officials and scientists leave bananas and coconuts for the islanders. Experts warn that because people of this island lack immunity to illnesses brought by outsiders, any interaction with such isolated individuals can be deadly for them.

Contact Attempts in Past

The Indian government made many attempts to contact the Sentinelese. In 1967, Triloknath Pandit, an anthropologist, was sent along with a number of policemen and navy officials. When the group came near the island, Sentinelese clearly showed that they were not interested at all in any contact. But Pandit and his crew came back repeatedly. They left gifts for the Sentinelese as a gesture of goodwill. The tribe started accepting the presents over time. The coconuts that Pandit and his colleagues had brought were of particular interest to them. By 1991, the Sentinelese had become less hostile toward the tourists and had even come to collect their presents unarmed. They still kept the visiting group at a safe distance and never invited them to visit their village or didn’t give any gift in return. Finally, the Indian government stopped the visits in 1996. However, other contact attempts with the Sentinelese were also made by outside people The Indian government has prohibited travel to North Sentinel Island for a long time. This was for the safety of both the Sentinelese and visitors. An American called John Allen Chau made an unauthorized trip to North Sentinel Island in 2018. He intended to introduce himself to the Sentinelese as an ardent Christian missionary. However, he also encountered resistance. Chau, who was 26 years old, was killed by the tribe.

P C Joshi, an anthropology professor at Delhi University, declared that “we have turned into very dangerous people.” “Even little things can kill them.” Because of this, according to Abbi, researchers who travel to remote communities take special care to keep their stays brief and to avoid the people altogether, even if they just have a little cold or cough. The other tribes of the island chain have been mostly wiped off during the previous century due to sickness, intertribal marriage, and migration. SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN FROM JULY 1 BANNED ITEMS LIST

Union Environment Ministry officials have said that the ban on select single-use plastic products will come into effect from Friday (July 1, 2022) and state governments will launch an enforcement drive and shut down units engaged in the production, distribution, storage, and sale of such items. Earlier on June 28, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified that the government will ban singleuse plastic items across the country from July 1.

WHAT WILL CHANGE & HOW WILL THE BAN BE ENFORCED FROM JULY 1, 2022?

From July 1, 2022, CPCB and State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) will monitor prohibition. At the national, state, and local levels, orders have been issued to refrain from providing raw materials to businesses dealing in prohibited products.

Here are some of the items that are banned: • Balloon sticks • Cigarette packs • Cutlery items including plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, trays – Earbuds • Sweet boxes • Candy and ice cream sticks • Invitation cards • Polystyrene for decoration • PVC banners measuring under 100 microns Union environment minister Bhupinder Yadav said, “We are expecting cooperation from the FMCG industry. The micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are currently manufacturing singleuse plastics, would be urged to shift to making alternatives. We would run awareness programmes. The government is committed to the initiative and will not take a step back.” Several FMCG firms and restaurants rushed to meet the single-use plastic ban as companies and eateries said they were scrambling to replace plastic spoons, straws, and containers, citing the high cost of alternatives. FMCG companies have claimed that the restriction on single-use plastic will ultimately push up the price of final products.

In addition, commercial licences will be cancelled if it is found that they are selling single-use plastic items. Local authorities have been urged to grant new commercial licences with this restriction. According to the Environment Protection Act of 1986, anyone caught breaking the law faces a fine of up to INR 1 lakh, up to five years in jail, or both. Furthermore, there are municipal laws on plastic waste, which have their own penal codes.

FREE COVID PRECAUTION DOSES FOR 18-59 AGE GROUP Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday (July 13) announced free COVID-19 precaution doses for the age group of 18-59 at government vaccine centers as part of a 75-day special drive starting July 15. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, a free booster dose campaign will be run for the next 75 days under the government’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the prevention of Covid will be promoted. The minister said that this will shield all adults against the virus. “I urge all those eligible to get their precaution dose at the earliest,” the health minister

The government’s plan to provide free COVID-19 precaution doses to all adults over the age of 18 will increase vaccination numbers in India and lead to a healthier nation, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This year in March, The vaccination drive for 12-14 years was started. So far, more than 3.76 crore adolescents have been administered the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Precaution dose administration for the age group 18-59 years started on April 10.

Responding to a query, Mandaviya said people would have to pay if they visit a private facility to get the precaution dose. Noting that some had raised doubts over the efficacy of indigenously developed vaccines, he said a booster dose is needed for everyone, and “no one has to pay for it.” He did not share details on how much the exercise would cost the government. Mandaviya thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this decision.
