The big bull of stock market Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is a billionaire business magnet, stock trader and investor. Also known as the Indian Warren Buffett, Jhunjhunwala is a certified accountant. According to Forbes’ Rich List 2021, he is the country’s 36th richest person. He serves as the chairman of the boards of directors for many companies, including Provogue India, Viceroy Hotels, Geojit Financial Services, and Concord Biotech. He is also the founder and CEO of Aptech. He has worked as a producer on films including “Shamitabh,” “English-Vinglish,” and “Ki and Ka.”

Portfolio of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born on July 5, 1960, into a middle-class Rajasthani family in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His surname suggests that originally his family comes from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. His father, Radheshyamji Jhunjhunwala, worked as a commissioner of income tax and mother, Urmila Jhunjhunwala, was a housewife. In 1985, he graduated from Sydenham College and thereafter enrolled himself at the institute of Charted Accountants of India.

As of the March 31st, 2021, 37 stocks that he and his partners own are publicly traded. His favourite companies in this include Crisil, Tata Motors, Lupine, Titan Company, Federal Bank, DB Realty, Fortis Healthcare, Delta Corp, Nazara Technologies, and Tata Communications. He has a net worth of Rs 19,695.3 billion. His most substantial investments in this are in the watch and jewellery manufacturer Crisil (1,063.2 crore), Tata Motors (1,474.4 crore), and Titan Company (Rs 7,879 crore).

When Jhunjhunwala saw his father talking to his friends about the stock market, he became interested in it. Although he provided him advice on the markets, his father never granted him money to invest and banned him from approaching his friends for financing. Rakesh began investing while still a freshman in college using the money he had on hand. He started with just Rs. 5000 in 1985 which is now totals Rs. 39,527 cr.

His Philosophy

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is both a successful investor and avid trader. Complaining about this he jokes that trading is a habit he can not get rid of. According to Jhunjhunwala, “Trading and investing are like having a mistress and a wife. You cannot successfully handle both”. Try to keep both of them apart. One should not tell anything about the other.

When Rakesh Jhunjhunwala first began trading in the Indian stock market in 1985, the BSE Sensex was just about 150 points high. Jhunjhunwala began purchasing shares of Tata Tea in 1985 with a capital of Rs. 5,000. He acquired these stocks at Rs. 43 per stock.

Even after nearly four decades of expertise, the seasoned investors said that it is difficult to earn money on the stock market because it is like a fire.

Tata Tea gave Indian stock market trader Rakesh Jhunjhunwala his first profit. Jhunjhunwala earned a 5-lakh profit in the year 1986. In Tata Tea, he invested in 5000 shares. In under three months, the stock rose to 143. Because the price of Tata Tea shares increased to Rs 143 in just three months, he made his first significant profit of 20–25 lakh. Jhunjhunwala made profitable investments in Aurobindo Pharma, Sesa Goa, Praj Industries, Titan, CRISIL, and NCC throughout the years.

The Dalal street maverick urges individuals to trade using their own funds. This, according to him, guarantees that individuals take prudent risks and protect against unjustified capital loss. Additionally, he suggested that investors set reasonable return expectations. He has said in previous interviews that anyone who can achieve a portfolio return of 18 or 21% is not less than a king.

He now ranks as the 36th wealthiest Indian, according to Forbes, with a net worth of $5.8 billion (December 2021). Jhunjhunwala sits on the boards of directors of several companies, including Prime Focus Limited, Geojit Financial Services, Bilcare Limited, Praj Industries Limited, Provogue India Limited, Concord Biotech Limited, Innovasynth Technologies Limited, Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited, Viceroy Hotels Limited, Mid-Day Multimedia Limited and Tops Security Limited.

Patience: He shown his exceptional patience level at a number of different firms besides Titan. He sold 27 crores of Crisil shares in 2005 and spent the money on a Mumbai apartment on Malabar Hill which was a huge mistake as the value of those shares today is Rs 700-800 cr. He frequently advises being a patient investor.

He also serves as chairman of Aptech Limited and Hungama Digital Media Entertainment Pvt ltd. He is renowned for his stock market forecasts and upbeat outlooks and is known as the “Big Bull of India.

Experience and Skills: He thinks that learning from mistakes and experience are two of the wheels of investing. This is one of the factors that made Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s investment successful.

Current Bull Market’s King in the era of Harshad Mehta, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala used to be a bear. After the Harshad Mehta Scam in 1992, Jhunjhunwala made a significant profit by selling shares.

Stay Active: According to him, a decent investor needs to be an active individual. Although he is renowned for his long-term investments, he is also a frequent trader. With the help of trading, he strengthened his capital base in his beginning of investing. He claims that trading helps him stay alert.

In one interview, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala said that he makes a lot of money through short selling, or selling shares. He belonged to a cartel of bears. Manu Manek, also known as Black Cobra, was the leader of one such Bear Cartel, which also included Radhakishan Damani (RK Damani) and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. In 1992, journalist Sucheta Dalal exposed the Harshad Mehta fraud, which led to a stock market collapse.
