Dear Readers:

Spring is in the air and what a lovely time it is in South Florida. This is my favorite time of year, particularly when the clocks spring ahead. The weather is still cool and the evenings are longer. It’s the perfect time to play sports, attend events and enjoy outdoor activities. Our cities have some great events lined up for you this spring. Come out to the 87th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo in Davie over the weekend of February 25-27. On March 9, The City of Cooper City is hosting Founder’s Day, an annual day-long event, beginning with a parade, an afternoon of family-fun activities at Brian Picolo Park, and ending in an evening of fireworks! The City of Plantation has a host of events lined up from Dr. Suess’s Birthday, Toucha-Truck, Candyland Express and an Earth Day Celebration. Of course, there will be Egg Hunts, too, so be sure to turn to our Calendar of Events in the Around Town section for locations and times and to check out all the fun! It’s a new season for sports, and registrations are happening now. You can find them all in the Main Directory in the red-tabbed section. Spring break is the week of March 25 for Broward County Public Schools, so be sure to page through our Main & Camp Directories to find some great options. It may seem early, but February and March are the perfect times to explore and register for Summer Camp 2024. We have a special, blue-tabbed section featuring Summer Camp in this issue that’s full of fun, sports, enrichment & educational programs for children of all ages. From monthly camp sessions to weekly camps or day camps, there are plenty of options to choose from. Find one that your child will enjoy. Maybe he or she would like to try horseback riding, basketball, soccer, volleyball, acting/theatre, robotics, languages, academics, or learn to play a musical instrument this summer. Whatever you choose, we have them all covered. I’m confident you’ll find the perfect fit. I’d like to thank our issue Sponsor Baptist Health that’s located right in Plantation, ready to serve your family’s healthcare needs and our advertisers for their continued support. Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. Be sure to tell our advertisers you found them in Sports & Activities Directory. I look forward to seeing you around the community this spring! Cheers to a happy, healthy spring! My Best to you!

Dear Cooper City Residents,

10

Happy New Year! I hope the holiday season was filled with many moments of joy, love, and laughter with those you cherish most. Spring is around the corner and it signals the return of Cooper City’s Founder’s Day! This signature day in “Someplace Special” will be taking place on March 9, 2024. I look forward to spending a fun-filled day alongside residents and visitors. Our Parks and Recreation Department is working on a schedule filled with events and activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Founder’s Day will kick off with a one-mile run and a parade down SW 90th Avenue to go along with all of the traditional pomp and circumstance. Afternoon activities will be held at Brian Piccolo County Park, where the evening concert and fireworks show will cap off the exciting day. Please visit the City’s website at www.CooperCity. gov/Calendar to see a full list of activities and remember to follow the City’s social media pages to receive updates and notifications about all City events and programs. Coming up in March, I hope you will make your way over to Flamingo West Park for an “Egg-Stravaganza.” The egg hunt is always an enjoyable opportunity for friends and neighbors to socialize and spend quality time together at one of Cooper City’s beautiful parks. During the months of March and early April there will be meaningful days for our religious communities. My wish is that the holy month of Ramadan is filled with many blessings for our Muslim neighbors, I pray that our Jewish brothers and sisters enjoy a happy and healthy Passover, and for our Christian community to be filled with hope, love, and peace this Easter. The spring season is a time for new beginnings and there are many new things happening in Cooper City. We recently embarked on a Landscape Master Plan, which kicked off with a public meeting in January. The purpose of this plan to set the course for rejuvenating signage and landscaping on City-owned property and enhancing our parks and facilities. A second public meeting will be held in the near future. Please check www.CooperCity.gov and follow the City’s social media pages for updates on the plan and the next meeting date. Meanwhile, we have been moving forward with our strategic priority of proactive public safety. The City Commission has made significant investments in our city’s future. In conjunction with the BSO Cooper City District, our Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) is already making a positive impact in our community. Through our Cooper City S.T.A.R.S. Program, your community may be eligible for a grant that can help integrate your neighborhood’s security system with the RTCC. Please contact our BSO Cooper City District at (954) 432-9000 for more information. Many wonderful things are happening in “Someplace Special” and I invite you to be a part of the process. Please get involved and share your thoughts and opinions at City Commission meetings. As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Greg Ross

Greetings Plantation Residents,

14

It’s hard to believe that I have been in office for more than a year. And what a great year it’s been! As we’re getting into a swing of things for 2024, I’ve been reflecting on some bigger ideas that we are working on to make our residents’ lives better. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. We have almost 1,000 employees across our 14 departments. Part of my direction to our leaders and staff is to “put your foot on the gas pedal and do not let up.” I’m proud to say they have taken that to heart. We are overflowing with ideas to improve this city that I love. The challenge, as it should be, is how to best allocate your tax dollars and to determine the priorities. WE LISTEN AND LEARN: As anyone who was in Broward County in April 2023 knows, the idea of property being damaged by flooding looms large. So, we want to make sure we have the best possible drainage. We have upped the maintenance and I know many of you saw the results. We also have a stormwater master plan and targeted projects for the hardest hit areas to implement. You can help by taking a minute to make sure your drains outside are clear. We have staff out and about looking for vulnerable areas, but if you’d help with the easy fixes, we’d appreciate it. Meanwhile, as Plantation Walk and other areas gain visitors, we’re not going to ignore traffic challenges. We are requiring developers to make it more feasible for people to walk from one venue to another, reducing the need for cars, where possible. We also are trying to make it easier for those who like to bicycle. We have created what is called a Master Multimodal Transportation Plan, tweaked after public feedback. I am a firm believer that listening and responding is vital to successful government. We’ll be implementing micro-transit, a model different from traditional local shuttle systems. Personalized short-trip electric vehicle companies, such as Freebee or Circuit, garner sponsorships and then need minimal funding to transport residents door to door within a defined service area. That eliminates wait times and walking times. We expect to have micro-transit in place this year. MOVING FORWARD: Among our future options is using modern technology to better assist our residents (customers). Building director William Gale and I have talked about the features coming our way through the Accela system and we believe they will provide the necessary upgrades to get users where they want to go. Utility Billing has rolled out Eye On Water that allows customers to view their water usage and set up alerts that can help catch leaks early. I also want us to do better with paperless billing and online bill pay. As with all latest technology, the city will approach it with cautious optimism, making sure it benefits our environment and protects the citizens we serve. Increased resident access to information flowing from City Hall and two-way communication with you has been one of my main priorities for the last year and remains a focus area for 2024. More video content to keep you updated is in the works. I prefer email if you wish to contact me directly, my email address is Mayor@Plantation.org. Sincerely,

Nick Sortal

ARE REQUIRED ‘SERVICE HOURS’ STILL CONSIDERED ALTRUISTIC? By Dr. David Yudell

W

hether or not you are the parent of a highschooler, you have probably heard of ‘service hours’. In 1992, Maryland became the first state to require high school students to complete service activities in their community in order to graduate, with many states (ours included) following suit. This requirement has noble intentions, teaching students valuable lessons and promoting a sense of community, but can these mandated acts still be considered altruistic (selfless concerns for the well-being of others)? Altruism is a wonderful character trait, defined as helping others without seeking anything in return. ‘Helping others’ can come in many forms. It may be a child sharing their toys with a friend, helping a classmate who is struggling, or even just offering a warm smile to someone who’s having a hard time. Altruism is often interconnected with kindness and compassion, as well as leading to better abilities in connecting with others and building trust. For both the helper and helpee, altruism makes individuals feel good inside. Altruistic acts can also foster empathy. Empathy is understanding how someone else feels or putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. People who display empathy can connect with others on a deeper level. Encouraging students to do volunteer work can help to develop altruism and empathy within them. Volunteer work can lead to a myriad of other benefits as well. It opens students’s eyes to the diverse needs of their community, teaching them to understand others. Whether it’s assisting at a local shelter or spending time with elderly neighbors, these experiences cultivate a sense of compassion that lasts a lifetime. Through direct interactions with those facing challenges, students learn to appreciate kindness and the impact it can have on someone’s life.

Valuable life lessons can also be learned through volunteering. Students gain a deeper understanding of responsibility, time management, and teamwork. As they contribute they learn to balance their commitments, prioritize tasks, and collaborate with others. These skills are crucial for success in various aspects of life. Volunteering also broadens students’s horizons by exposing them to different cultures. Through various programs, students interact with people from various backgrounds, widening their perspective of the local community. This exposure builds appreciation for diversity and helps break down harmful stereotypes, promoting an inclusive society. Volunteer work contributes to the development of a student’s sense of purpose. Knowing that their efforts make a positive impact empowers students and boosts self esteem. This satisfaction derived from helping others builds a sense of identity and purpose; It helps students recognize that they can make a difference. Volunteer work can be rewarding, but is it equivalent to altruistic acts if students are required to do so? The conclusion; mandated service acts are not altruistic in nature, but they are the perfect launching point to instill altruism in a child. Service hours encourage students to do more, setting high goals and giving rewards if they achieve them. Start your student on the path to discovering altruistic endeavors as soon as you can. On April 13th, Relay For Life will take place at Central Park in Plantation. (RelayForLife.org/PlantationSunriseFL). This is a family friendly, community event that benefits the American Cancer Society – where we recognize and honor those affected by cancer (Survivors, Caregivers and those in treatment and those we have lost). A great way to start students on their journey is through Relay for Life. Consider joining us for a great cause.

e had quite a busy holiday season here at Peters Elementary! With parties and crafts and spirit days, our amazing students made sure to use their free time to make a difference in our very own community. In the weeks leading up to the Thanksgiving break, our 5th grade students involved in Student Council held their annual harvest drive. Led by one of our 5th grade teachers, Ms. Brockman, they created flyers about what foods were able to be donated and encouraged students in every grade to donate items to the drive. After collecting all the items, they sorted and prepared them for donation to the Children Helping Children Harvest Drive. This organization has been helping families right here in Broward County for over 30 years! This year, our students were able to collect and donate over 400 food items! Soon after Thanksgiving break, our Peters Pandas began planning their next donation drive. With the upcoming winter holidays, the Student Council decided to hold a toy drive to benefit local families. Similar to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive,

students created posters and collected toys from many students around campus. At the end of the drive, the students collected almost 200 brand news toys that they donated to Project Magic School Bus. This organization collects toys from schools all over Broward to give back to our local families. We are proud of all of our Pandas who donated and volunteered their time to make bother of these donation drives successful! We are looking forward to seeing what our students will accomplish in the second half of the school year. As always, you can stay up to date on everything happening with Peters Elementary by following our Facebook page! If you would like to become involved and help with projects and events such as these, you can become a Broward Schools volunteer by completing the application on the Broward Schools homepage at www.browardschools.com/page/32043. Peters Elementary is located at 851 NW 68th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 322-7900.

SCHOOLS

Typically, their parents do not speak the English language, do not understand the culture and are not in-tune with what their children might explain is mainstream in their current world. In addition, although they may be aware of the services available to their children, they do not often comprehend what it can do for them. To bridge the gap, a collaborative effort led by the ESOL coordinator and members of the Tropical faculty hosted a first of its kind Family Game Night dedicated to the interaction of immigrant parents, their children, and the teachers who teach the program. They played games together and the children took the games home with them. The event allowed the parents to have a better understanding of how the ESOL program is designed as well as how additional services could help their family. The school had approximately fifty families attend this successful event. It is often said that it takes a village, a village of committed individuals who are devoted to the well-being of children, a village of people whose pledge is to have a positive influence in a child’s life so that together, we can make a difference that will continue to help that child grow. Children that do not speak English upon arrival (to the US) are impacted by the adults that have assured them that they are welcome here and who have told them they can be anything they strive for here in the USA, their new home. Tropical Elementary is located at 1500 SW 66th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323-7750.

ESOL

, English Speakers of Other Languages, is a program designed for non-native speakers of the English language who currently live in a country where English is the primary language. ESOL is a curriculum designed to develop and enrich a child’s comprehension of the English language. The ESOL program at Tropical Elementary goes so much further than just offering the standard curriculum to educate the children within the English language. It helps the students to assimilate into a new culture that includes their current reality, while not losing sight of their identity and where they come from. The program strives to give ESOL students the confidence they need to speak in English amongst their peers and adults alike. It gives them the ability to know that although they may come from a different country and/or culture, they are welcome here in the United States, the melting pot we call home. The celebration of these students’ identities and heritage amongst their fellow classmates is pivotal to their growth. In September, Hispanic ESOL students showed off their culture during a month-long celebration dedicated to Hispanic Heritage in America. They created and showcased posters about their homeland and shared it during the morning announcements by proudly describing their customs, favorite foods, and traditions. The month-long celebration ended with a traditional Colombian dance that everyone enjoyed. Sadly, immigrant parents and their children do not often have the opportunity to spend time together. This results in an even bigger issue for the children of immigrant parents.

Whether you’ve twisted your knee, rolled your ankle or suffer from osteoarthritis, if you have a condition that is causing pain or limited range of motion or you are experiencing any type of musculoskeletal problem that is affecting your quality of life, the experts at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care at Plantation are available. “It’s always our goal to get patients back to the level of activity they once enjoyed, whether that’s playing a sport they love or being able to travel again,” said John Uribe, M.D., chief medical executive for Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. “To do so, we bring a total team approach to care, with specialized orthopedic physicians backed by the most advanced technology and comprehensive rehabilitation programs.” Among the conditions treated are sprains and strains; fractures; torn ligaments and injured tendons; painful or swollen joints in the knee, shoulder and elbow; and a host of injuries and ailments that affect the hands, wrists, feet and ankles. Sophisticated imaging and surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures, and services such as ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma

injections are regularly used by the orthopedic team to treat a variety of problems. From total and partial knee replacements to conditioning programs to help prevent injury, the board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons and sports medicine physicians at the Plantation location will develop a specific treatment plan for you. That personalized care plan will depend on many factors, such as your age, overall health, lifestyle, the severity of your ailment and how it is affecting your daily activities. “We also work closely with athletes to improve sports performance and return them to action as quickly and safely as possible,” said Dr. Uribe, who is team physician for the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers, among others. Baptist Health Orthopedic Care at Plantation is staffed by orthopedic sports medicine surgeons Fernando Antonio Moya-Huff, M.D., Ph.D., and William Davis, M.D., hand and upper extremity surgeon Roy Cardoso, M.D., foot and ankle surgeon Cary Chapman, M.D., and hip and knee surgeon Charles Lawrie M.D. They are joined by two primary care sports medicine physicians, Luis Rodriguez, M.D., and Michael Swartzon, M.D., who specialize in the treatment and prevention of illness and injury and often work with athletes to help optimize performance. They maximize non-operative treatment, guide referrals to physical and occupational therapies and, if necessary, expedite an appointment to a surgeon for treatment.

Our physicians participate in research, publishing their outcomes in leading medical journals. In addition, they are teaching the next generation of orthopedic surgeons, preparing them to tackle the most complex orthopedic issues, particularly important as the population ages. And they are also pioneering new techniques, for example the use of 3D printing technology for a better custom joint replacement. “Together, with their knowledge and skill, our compassionate team will put you on the best path forward to healing,” Dr. Uribe said. The doctors agree prevention, of course, is the best medicine, and it’s important to remember that home accidents, including falls from ladders and stools, lawn mower injuries and slips and falls send thousands to hospital emergency departments each year. In addition, everyone should use proper safety equipment when riding bicycles, driving a car and participating in sports, and learn proper techniques for lifting, carrying and bending to avoid back injuries. “Generally, the sooner one seeks care for a problem, the better,” Dr. Uribe said. “Some conditions can worsen over time and if caught earlier could mean that care is less invasive.” Baptist Health Orthopedic Care is located at 1228 South Pine Island Road, Suite 310, in Plantation.
