Dear Readers, Welcome to the 2024 Spring edition of the Coral Springs & Parkland Sports and Activities Directory. As we look around the country and see the freezing temperatures and snow filled streets, we realize how wonderful our Florida winters are, so get outside and enjoy our beautiful weather! Many families have made this area home because they understand that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs such as robotics, debate and business classes, but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work. Spring Break and Summer Camp registrations are happening now! It’s the perfect opportunity to encourage your children to try new things, hone new skills and challenge themselves in different ways. You never know what hidden talent or passion will present itself in your children unless they have the opportunity to explore and try new things. It’s also the perfect time of year to challenge yourselves with new things…golf, pickle ball, volunteering, coaching, workout groups, or continuing education to take care of your own mental, physical and emotional health. Parents often spend so much time, money and energy on those they care for that they forget about themselves. The weather is fantastic, and events are in abundance this Spring, so get out to the parks and the venues with your family and friends and make some wonderful memories together. Remember, time is our most precious asset, we should all spend pursuing activities that bring us joy. I wish you a wonderful spring and look forward to seeing you at the fields, parks, and everywhere else around Coral Springs & Parkland.

Dear Parkland Residents,

8

As we settle into the new year, take a moment to think about the power of friendship. We all know how effective positive words, or a statement of support can be, when we share a dream, vision, or just a hint of an idea with a good friend or mentor. Even a nonverbal show of support – leaning in to listen, putting down the cell phone when having a conversation, or asking questions of someone who is sharing thoughts and ideas with you – means the world to someone. These small gestures and moments in time make a big difference. They are the seeds we plant when we set out to build community. Our sense of community in the City of Parkland is integral to our wellbeing and our abilities to continue to thrive. With the smallest show of support to those around us, we can lift one another up and support our loved ones and our neighbors to help each other achieve our goals in 2024. February marks the six-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. Through the vast and varied efforts of organizations and foundations that have been created to memorialize the 17 victims of this tragedy, positive changes have been made on the federal, state, and local levels regarding laws and policies that will ensure safety for us all—in the hopes that a similar horrific event is not repeated. As we commemorate the lives lost this month, let us use the strength and vision of our community as an example of how we can all support one another. O n We d n e s d a y, F e b r u a r y 1 4 , 2 0 2 4 , a t t h e Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park, we will hold the sixyear Commemoration event to honor and remember the 17 victims. Every year this event provides a humbling reminder of those who were taken and how our community comes together to honor them and comfort one another. We are stronger together. Your Parkland Mayor,

Rich Walker If you would like to share your thoughts or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.

Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,

10

I hope your New Year is going well. We hosted a great Visioning Summit recently with almost 100 residents and business owners and received great input for the future of Coral Springs! It is a bright future, indeed. There were so many ideas that came out of the Summit, and I will share a few of them with you. Residents expressed a desire for higher education as well as tech schools for students who don’t wish to go the traditional college route. Many of you want to see more nightlife options and want to bring back Savor the Springs to highlight local restaurants. Some senior citizens shared that they would love to join a pickleball league and have activities at night for those seniors that work. A few ideas that I took away from the Summit indirectly include a Mayor’s Leadership Summit for youth leaders and retired Seniors to share and connect with one another, an event to connect typical children with atypical children to learn about and from one another as well as altering codes potentially to expand affordable housing for our young adults. I am happy to announce that we recently brought back Mayor for the Day so that our youth can shadow me and learn what it’s like to be the Mayor. If you are interested in learning more about it, please email me at Sbrook@coralsprings.gov. I hope you enjoyed our beautiful holiday display on the City Hall lawn over the holidays. As you likely know, our City hosts many community events. To learn more, please visit www. coralsprings.gov/events. One of the events that is hosted in Coral Springs that I love is the Festival of the Arts! It will be held during the weekend of March 16 and 17 at the Walk. It’s a great community event for people of all ages and its led by volunteers!! Did you know that the City Police Department leads a Vacation Watch program? If you are expected to be away from your home for an extended period of time (5-30 days), our amazing Police Department will send an officer to check on your home! Our Police Department also leads a fantastic program for youth called the Explorers program. We look for young adults from 14-21 years of age with good moral character, community-minded and a positive attitude. To learn more, please email Mmartin@coralsprings.gov. As I write this, I am in my fifth term as Mayor. It’s hard to believe that time has flown so fast. I am so grateful to be able to serve such an inclusive and family-oriented community! It is such an honor to serve! We have so many appreciative citizens, dedicated employees, great restaurants, parks, schools and so much more! Please contact me if I can ever help you with anything at Sbrook@coralsprings.gov. Feel free to call me as well on my personal cell at (954)494-9872. IF you would like to set an appointment during office hours, contact Luwam at (954)344-5906. Have a blessed day!

Warmly, Your Friendly Mayor,

Scott J. Brook

Mayor of Coral Springs

AROUND TOWN

AROUND TOWN thought-out plans and finally, assist you in the improvement of your financial decision making, whatever the market conditions. As we move forward into 2024, some of the 2023 concerns, such as wars, persistent inflation, potential recession, the Presidential election, etc. will continue to weigh on sentiment, and certainly cause further volatility and uncertainty. We will NOT fear the uncertainty, but lean into it, with foreknowledge that our longterm financial plan is both well thought-out and sustainable.

Our Specific Guidance:

• Investors who watch the market often will experience more stress than those that do not. • You will be tempted to change your investment strategy based on market performance, expert forecasts, and/or your personal beliefs about the future. • Your investment decisions and reactions to market events will have a significant influence on your personal investment return. • The financial media will enrich themselves by emotionalizing headlines and short-term market moves to entice you to click and tune in. It’s nothing more than click bait • Like a math problem that someone explains to us AFTERWARDS, the economy/market will do something that surprises or stumps us, and it will be obvious in hindsight. • Investors that focus their time and attention on those things they can control will have a better investment experience than those that focus on what they wish they could control. Be well, and invest wisely.

s usual, and as the saying goes, the “market climbs a wall of worry.” 2023 was no different, and there was lots of bad news. Late in 2022, market and economic experts didn’t just forecast a recession, they put probability of a recession occurring at 100%.1 Then, early in 2023 we witnessed several regional banks fail and predictions abounded that things would get worse. We also experienced mortgage rates soaring to their highest level in over 23 years, resulting in a significant drag on the housing market. And in late fall, global conflicts increased more with the beginning of a mid-East war - spurring talks of a potential World War III. If you had known these negative events were going to occur, would you have invested? Be honest! These are serious events, any one of which could have derailed the economy and markets. Yet, despite all the bad news, scary headlines, and dire predictions, the SP500 was up over 25% for the year. As responsible financial advisors, our role is NOT and will never be to seek SP500 outperformance. It is impossible, and it is illogical as an approach to sound financial planning. Our job IS to work to protect your principal, to help you create a lifetime income that exceeds your expenses, manage to your long-term values and priorities, and well-

ARE REQUIRED ‘SERVICE HOURS’ STILL CONSIDERED ALTRUISTIC? By Dr. David Yudell

W

hether or not you are the parent of a highschooler, you have probably heard of ‘service hours’. In 1992, Maryland became the first state to require high school students to complete service activities in their community in order to graduate, with many states (ours included) following suit. This requirement has noble intentions, teaching students valuable lessons and promoting a sense of community, but can these mandated acts still be considered altruistic (selfless concerns for the well-being of others)? Altruism is a wonderful character trait, defined as helping others without seeking anything in return. ‘Helping others’ can come in many forms. It may be a child sharing their toys with a friend, helping a classmate who is struggling, or even just offering a warm smile to someone who’s having a hard time. Altruism is often interconnected with kindness and compassion, as well as leading to better abilities in connecting with others and building trust. For both the helper and helpee, altruism makes individuals feel good inside. Altruistic acts can also foster empathy. Empathy is understanding how someone else feels or putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. People who display empathy can connect with others on a deeper level. Encouraging students to do volunteer work can help to develop altruism and empathy within them. Volunteer work can lead to a myriad of other benefits as well. It opens students’s eyes to the diverse needs of their community, teaching them to understand others. Whether it’s assisting at a local shelter or spending time with elderly neighbors, these experiences cultivate a sense of compassion that lasts a lifetime. Through direct interactions with those facing challenges, students learn to appreciate kindness and the impact it can have on someone’s life.

Valuable life lessons can also be learned through volunteering. Students gain a deeper understanding of responsibility, time management, and teamwork. As they contribute they learn to balance their commitments, prioritize tasks, and collaborate with others. These skills are crucial for success in various aspects of life. Volunteering also broadens students’s horizons by exposing them to different cultures. Through various programs, students interact with people from various backgrounds, widening their perspective of the local community. This exposure builds appreciation for diversity and helps break down harmful stereotypes, promoting an inclusive society. Volunteer work contributes to the development of a student’s sense of purpose. Knowing that their efforts make a positive impact empowers students and boosts self esteem. This satisfaction derived from helping others builds a sense of identity and purpose; It helps students recognize that they can make a difference. Volunteer work can be rewarding, but is it equivalent to altruistic acts if students are required to do so? The conclusion; mandated service acts are not altruistic in nature, but they are the perfect launching point to instill altruism in a child. Service hours encourage students to do more, setting high goals and giving rewards if they achieve them. Start your student on the path to discovering altruistic endeavors as soon as you can. On April 13th, Relay For Life will take place at Central Park in Plantation. (RelayForLife.org/PlantationSunriseFL). This is a family friendly, community event that benefits the American Cancer Society – where we recognize and honor those affected by cancer (Survivors, Caregivers and those in treatment and those we have lost). A great way to start students on their journey is through Relay for Life. Consider joining us for a great cause.

he “new year” brings in much excitement as our students participate in a variety of learning activities within and that extend beyond the school day. All grade levels are participating in onsite and off site field trips to build background knowledge. Our afterschool clubs are providing a balance of leadership and learning extention opportunities. In an effort to better gather the student voice, Coral Park’s Student Council has been formed with representatives from third, fourth, and fifth grade serving as Class Mayors. Tomatoes and other vegetables are growing as our “Green Thumb Club” plants and tends to our school garden. In collaboration with the Humane Society, we have a visiting dog, “Blue” who loves when our students read to him. Our chorus visited the local assisted living facility for an interactive sing along in December and will be returning in February for an “encore” performance. These are just a “peppering” of the wonderful events happening at Coral Park.

Coral Park is also gearing up for the 2023-24 school year, too! Register early to secure your space in our amazing VPK program for three and four year olds! Mark your calendar for our “Cubbette Day” on May 10th. e wish a Happy New Year to the Coral Springs community and the Ram Families! In November, our PTO hosted Dinner with D.A.D.S. (Dedicated and Devoted Supporters). This is an event where males who participate in students’ lives were invited to eat dinner with their child, nephew, brother, etc. They also got a chance to network and sign up to volunteer at upcoming events. It was a fantastic evening! Thank you to our awesome PTO! In December, parents were invited to watch their children perform on stage during our Winter Chorus Holiday Show at Taravella High School. Student participants from all grade levels performed various holiday songs. A huge thank you to our Music teacher, Mr. Wexler, for preparing our students for this outstanding performance. Our Chess Team competed for the first time this school year and placed 2nd in the K-5 category at South Broward High School. Our Debate Team also competed at Northeast High, as four students received medals during the competition. Our students competed fiercely under the direction of Mr.

Alvaro Picado, P.E. teacher, Chess and Debate Coach. Kudos to the teams! The Ramblewood Middle School Band came to our school to perform holiday songs for our students and staff. This was a bittersweet moment as John Nista, Band Director of Ramblewood Middle School, is retiring at the end of the school year after many years of service. Mr. Nista, thank you for everything that you’ve done over the years to inspire and touch students’ lives. You will be missed! The students have just completed their assessments and are on track to surpass the “B” that they’ve earned this school year. The teachers are delivering rigorous lessons in all grade levels as we strive for excellence! Parents, please make sure your students are completing homework and web-based assignments daily to help us achieve our goal! We have many more events and activities coming soon. We can’t wait to share them with you. Ramblewood Elementary is located at 8950 Shadowwood Blvd in Coral Springs. Their principal is Dacyany Ibarrondo. They can be reached at (754) 322-8150.

When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are developed in an enjoyable manner. The Parkland Juniorettes are high school girls dedicated to making a difference. This group has partnered with the Parkland Library to help younger students with reading. Building partnerships between our high-achieving high school students and elementary-age children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. (Note: On the Mondays that school is closed Reading Buddies will not meet.) Registration is not required; just meet at the desk in the center of the library. Visit www.cityofparkland.org/library or call (954) 757-4207.

PARKLAND LIBRARY STORYTIME CLASSES Please visit www.cityofparkland.org/library for story time class schedules and registration dates. Your Parkland Library card is required in order to register. Registration is limited to one class per child. • BOOKS AND BABIES: (9–23 months with adult). This is an early literacy class that creates sound and print awareness and their relationship through the use of toys, puzzles and books. • TODDLER TALES STORYTIME: (24 months–3 ½ yrs, child must be accompanied by an adult). This early literacy class establishes the relationship between letters and sounds, sign identification, and provides early phonemic awareness. This is accomplished through stories, music, rhymes, and games. • PRESCHOOL STORYTIME: (3–5-years old unaccompanied by adult). In this class, preschool age children will enhance phonemics, direction, verbal and written cues, motor skills and literacy links through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel boards and crafts. New themes are presented each week. • ROOKIE READERS: (Kindergarten–2nd Grade). This class combines stories, poems and crafts to make a fun library experience. It encourages entertaining, independent reading.
