Dear Readers, I hope your 2024 is off to a fantastic start. We have a lot of things happening in the months of February, March, and April. Primarily, we have an election for the new Mayor of Pembroke Pines coming up. Election day is Tuesday, March 19th, so do your research on the candidates and make sure you go out and vote for the future of our city. I want to give a big THANK YOU to Mayor Frank Ortis for all that he has done for the city of Pembroke Pines in the past 28 years. I remember when I first started working for this magazine, my publisher asked me to go to an event where the mayor would be present. She suggested I should introduce myself to him and get some pictures. My thought was “introducing myself to the mayor of the city, is she kidding me?” Coming from New York City, that was not something I ever thought of doing. I must say I was a bit intimidated at first, but I put on a brave face and introduced myself, and Mayor Ortis couldn’t have been nicer and more generous. As time went on I would then see him at various events all over town, and we began to develop a friendship. He always had a smile on his face, a nice word to say, and occasionally even some jokes and a laugh. When my uncle turned 95, Mayor Ortis was even gracious enough to honor him with a formal proclamation from the city. So, from all of us at Sports & Activities Directory a BIG THANK YOU Mayor Ortis for your tireless service to our community. This issue will cover Spring Break Camps & preview Summer Camps. You may think it’s too early to start thinking about camps, but now is the time to reserve a space at your kid’s favorite camp. This year we have camps centered on Art, Aviation, Chess, Sports & more. If they are not sure of what they want, try a camp that does it all. All the information you need can be found within the pages of this magazine, and if for some reason you can’t find what you’re looking for feel free to call me and I will try to help you find it. As always I ask that you visit our advertisers and support them. We’ve highlighted many new and exciting businesses that have opened recently in this issue. Our advertisers are the ones that keep us around, so please don’t forget to tell them you saw their ad in Sports & Activities Directory. Regards,

Linda Lombardi

Dear Residents,

After 28 years of serving the great City of Pembroke Pines in various positions, my term as a long-standing Mayor will come to an end as I have chosen to retire. I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the privilege and honor of having served you throughout these many years in the capacity as a Commissioner, Vice Mayor, and Mayor. This truly is a bittersweet goodbye. However, I am not going anywhere, and hope that when you see me throughout the community, you’ll come up to me to say hi. The City of Pembroke Pines is a family to me, and I will forever be grateful for having been a part of this city and its growth and diversity. Now on to what is happening here in Pembroke Pines this year. We kick off the New Year with a few of my favorite events! I’d like to invite everyone to attend our Kindness Initiative/Community Peace Picnic event on February 3, 2024, from 11 am to 2 pm. This joint effort between the City of Pembroke Pines, Broward County Schools and Baptist Health will take place at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. It’s an afternoon of sharing kindness, musical performances, and the perfect spot for a picnic. Awards will even be given for the best decorated picnic area. So, please bring your lunch and prepare to enjoy a peaceful and fun afternoon break. At the end of the month, we have our very popular Taste of Pines, which is an event you don’t want to miss. This event takes place on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the Charles F. Dodge City Center from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Tickets will be available soon on Ticketmaster. Participants have an opportunity to sample the best of the best cuisine from our local restaurants, wines and enjoy live musical entertainment. The annual Taste of Pines benefits the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. For more info, please call 954-392-2116. The new year always motivates us to purge and clean but it is important to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste properly. Clean Harbors Environmental Services provides household hazardous waste drop off events for Pembroke Pines residents on a quarterly basis, held at the City’s wastewater treatment plant located at 13975 Pembroke Road from 8 am to 2 pm. You may want to mark your calendars for the 2024 scheduled dates: March 9, 2024, June 1, 2024, September 7, 2024, and December 14, 2024. For a list of acceptable and non-acceptable hazardous waste, please visit the City’s website at www.ppines.com under the Public Services tab. Residents must bring proof of Pembroke Pines residency to use the drop off services. If you have a question, please call 954-518-9000. For all the golfers out there, don’t forget about the Mayor Frank C. Ortis Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament which will benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. It will be held on March 22, 2024, at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, located at 10500 Taft Street. To ensure your place and to get more information, please email Carol Campisi at ccampisi@ppines.com. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com From your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

more importantly, bring it home to a personal level. Listening to other people W a t c h i n g and share their experiences is a very good thing because we gain inspiration. However,

celebrities and athletes open up about their challenges with mental health makes me all “giddy” and cautious at the same time. I have been in this field for over 17 years. I’ve witnessed the evolution of this topic go from stigmatized to sensationalized. I feel excited because so much focus and energy go into these campaigns. It is for the same exact reason that I feel cautious too. The attention poured into the discussion of mental health is usually fleeting. Truthfully, we have come a long way. The access to support and resources is incredible. Compared to the year 2004 when I went back to school for my graduate degree, the notion that mental health matters is now widespread. This is where we must keep going and keep talking. It’s all more than just a slogan, a campaign or a trend. Mental health affects our emotional well-being, concentration, mood and physical health among other things. It also impacts the people around us, hence our relationships. According to the World Health Organization, the state of one’s mental health “enables them to cope with the stresses of life.” Everything we do and how well we do them is connected to our mental health. And while stress is inevitable when you feel better, you think better. Is there a solution? I’m glad you asked! We have to continue the discussion

if we want to see changes we must act on that knowledge. Globally, there are 40 million people who reported feeling anxious. Only 33% ever receive the help they seek. According to the same report by the Center for Disease Control, there is statistically a 10 year gap from when a person shows signs and symptoms to the time that they find a professional who can guide them to wellness. If you or your family want to make your mental health a priority, here’s how you can start: 1. Take an inventory of your health. On average, how would you describe your emotional state? How do you cope with stressful situations? How would you rate your stress level overall: low, medium or high? 2. Conduct a self check-in. Once you’ve gauged where you stand when it comes to your health, look into these 4 areas. You want to check for the quality of your sleep, eating habits, social connection and interest in activities. 3. Make an appointment with yourself. Based on your answers to the questions above, commit to an aspect of your health you want to improve and a habit that you believe needs consistency in your life. Begin your journey with a moment of pause to think about what’s working and what’s not working. This is how you can build a plan to take care of your mental health. It’s more than a slogan. It’s a way of life. About the author: Joy Acaso is an Anxiety Support Coach and offers a free consultation for those who want to know more about finding solutions to overcome stress and anxiety. and emotional resilience to enhance cognitive and mental health. This isn’t a one size fits all treatment. My recommendations are custom fit to your child’s needs and can include nutritional guidance, herbal therapies, physical exercises, mindfulness techniques, and focused psychotherapy. The role as a pediatric clinical psychologist is centered around providing tailored and holistic support for parents concerned about their children’s well-being. The integration of standardized assessments and keen behavioral observations showcases a comprehensive understanding of a child’s challenges and strengths. The emphasis on creating a targeted plan for empowerment is a valuable approach. Your integrative method, weaving together aspects like quality nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, and emotional resilience, reflects a commitment to enhancing cognitive and mental health through a multifaceted approach. Stressing that your approach isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment and highlighting the customization of recommendations, including nutritional guidance, herbal therapies, physical exercises, mindfulness techniques, and focused psychotherapy, further underscores the individualized nature of your services. The financial cost of these CDE tests will be, when financially needed paid for by a grant that Therapies 4 Kids and Psych 4 U has secured. You will only be asked to come out of pocket for $250 at the time of setting the appointment for administrative fees. Once your appointment is made you will receive an email with all pertinent forms to fill out as well as an introduction to our associates who will be helping you with the grant. Please remember that we offer full Psychiatric Evaluations and Medication Management for Children, Adolescents, Adults and Geriatrics. We have Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and we also have Licensed Mental Health Counselors on staff for weekly therapy sessions. We do take most insurances so call and make an appointment today. If there’s anything specific you’d like to discuss or if you have questions related to your work, feel free to share. ince 2005 Therapies 4 Kids, Inc. & Psych 4 U, LLC has been on the forefront helping the children of our community to receive the proper therapies for their neurological disorders and their mental health issues. We have now incorporated our many services to include CDE’s (Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations) that are now being needed by some insurances to continue to receive ABA services. CDE’s are also good to know what your child is diagnosed with and to have a plan of action that a Neuro-Psychologist can lay out for you. There has been a lot of talk about certain tests for diagnosing Autism. The ADOS-2 has been considered the “Gold Standard” for many parents, but OUR EVALUATIONS ARE MORE THAN JUST THE ADOS-2 = Although the ADOS-2 is often viewed as the “gold standard” of autism assessment, it is not a standalone measure. It only captures a sample of a childs behavior during an interaction with the examiner. For an assessment for ASD to be accurate and complete, developmental information is required. In addition, our psychologists work with families to gain a full understanding of our children’s day-to-day functioning and we reach out to clinicians. It’s important to highlight the comprehensive nature of your evaluations and acknowledge that the ADOS-2, while considered a “gold standard” in autism assessment, is not the sole determinant. Emphasizing the need for developmental information and collaboration with families and clinicians to gain a full understanding of a child’s day-to-day functioning adds depth to the assessment process. This approach reflects a holistic perspective that goes beyond a single interaction with an examiner. If you have any specific questions or if there’s more you’d like to discuss on this topic, feel free to let me know. As a pediatric clinical Psychologist, I specialize in turning uncertainty into understanding for parents concerned about their children’s well-being. By employing a blend of standardized assessments and keen behavioral observations, I pinpoint not just the challenges your child faces but also their inherent strengths. The result? A targeted plan that empowers your child to thrive. My approach is integrative weaving together the power of quality nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep,

fter a process of a couple of years, Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s “Jag Shack’’ is finally becoming available to the public. The reality was that it was created to regain the community aspect of the Jags themselves, the people associated with PPCHS. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a loss of community that embraced the school’s togetherness, and the Jag pride no longer held the same significance. This “Jag Shack’’ lab was constructed to help bring back that togetherness. That pride. Even more, the lab was set to provide valuable learning material that is frequently used in the reality of life. The Jag Shack store is being run by members of the Jag Shack team, which consists entirely of students. Also lending a hand are the school’s marketing classes, and of course, their role model of a teacher who is well needed. The course and Jag Shack lab were all thanks to the idea and influence of the marketing teacher, Mrs. Ferrer. She directs the operation, and all operations are overseen by her for final approval. The Jag Shack team of merchandisers is in charge of making sure the products offered are valued and received in flawless shape. They want their store to be physically appealing and to provide the best experience possible. Jag Shack’s inventory room is planned out to ensure smooth and safe operations. The three general managers of operations are critical to the movement of the store’s workload. Sophia Garcia, Santiago Serrato Ruiz and Annie Jimenez make Jag Shack projects easier, quicker,

and provide instruction and guidance to the staff, which they themselves also receive from Mrs. Ferrer. These opportunities help enhance all the students that contribute, in great or small amounts, to flourish in learning skills and even in how they establish themselves as a person. Students learn that communication is key. They face circumstances that allow them to learn from mistakes that happen in the real world. The startup of this lab physically began with the mural work of an exceptional artist, Sophia Assis. This student had submitted her design proposal for the exterior of the store and delivered exactly what she had brought up. Her hard work was shown in the extraordinary detail of her piece. The process of the making of the mural was lengthy, yet the dedication put into making it paid off. Once completed after an estimated 6 months of work between lunch hours and after school hours, the mural was completed. Painting the walls and prepping the actual inventory room also took a considerable amount of work and time. This shows just how determined the students involved were to make Jag Shack available, including the work of those who were fixated on the digital elements and operations that are taking place even more now that the store has become available for opening! The merchandise sold at the store expresses just how much one values their school, parading around showing the school spirit! Visit us at 17189 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines 33331.
