Dear Readers,

Now that Summer is upon us and the school year is coming to an end, many of you are asking what will you do with your kids this summer? The last thing any parent wants to hear are the dreaded words

“I’m bored”. Well luckily, the Sports & Activities Directory is here to help you with our Summer Camp issue. It’s filled with a wide selection of camps to choose from. We have both daily and weekly camps. There is something for everyone! Among the fine selections highlighted this summer are camps focusing on Art, Aviation, Chess, Coding, Fishing, Sports, and Special Needs. We even have camps that have it all. Summer Camp is a great way for your kids to try something new and to build new friendships while making great memories.

Recently we said goodbye to Mayor Frank Ortis, who retired after 28 wonderful years of service to Pembroke Pines. Now we welcome our new Mayor, Angelo Castillo, with open arms. Angelo has been a Pembroke Pines Commissioner for 20 years. Let’s not forget that behind every man there is a great woman! We also wish a warm welcome to our new First Lady of Pembroke Pines, Lisa Castillo. Congratulations to both of you. Also, a big congratulations to Commissioner Jay Schwartz from District 2 for being re-elected to his seat and to our newest Commissioner Maria Rodriguez who won her seat for District 3. We are excited to see how these fantastic civic leaders will continue to grow and serve our great community.

During the months of May-Mid August there are many events and days to celebrate. First and foremost, Sunday, May 12th is Mother’s Day. I want to wish all the moms out there a Happy Mother’s Day. I hope your special day is filled with everything that brings you joy. You deserve it! Of course, I want to give dads their flowers as well and wish them a Happy Father’s Day. Sunday, June 16th is Father’s Day, so make sure your dads also get treated special on their day.

Please make sure to check out our Events Page for all the happenings about town. You won’t want to miss out on all the great things the city has planned. There’s a Water Safety Day, the Mayor’s Chess Challenge, Mayor’s Kids Day and so much more. Also check out the Savor the Sounds at City Center.

Finally, we want to thank all our wonderful advertisers. This magazine would not be possible without their support. If you see a local business in our pages that piques your interest, be sure to pay them a visit and let them know you saw their ad in the Sports & Activities Directory.

All my best to you, Linda

NOTE:

Dear Friends:

I would first like to thank Pembroke Pines voters citywide for honoring me as your Mayor. My work has begun as our city’s 12th Mayor and the first of Hispanic American origin, but I will be a Mayor for all of our people and have pledged to ensure that the richness of our natural and viewpoint diversity is reflected at City Hall. There will be something on the menu for everyone to enjoy and I hope you will be pleased. I begin this task knowing that I did not earn every vote in our city in the last elections, but I want each of you to know, whether you voted for me or not, that you will always have my vote.

Nobody will outwork me. I will be engaged and honest with you even when what I have to say isn’t what you hoped to hear. We will form a family in Pembroke Pines devoted to achieving goals and, together with the entire City Commission and all in City Hall Administration, we will demonstrate that we love the city we call home. These will not be mere words. We will show it in the things we do together. WE are the city that cares, the city that can and the city that does. And it’s time to get our great city moving forward again toward a brighter future.

Please know that I am here to listen, to address and help find solutions for the concerns you bring to my attention. We know what the top issues are in our city because I took the time to ask.

Residents want action on traffic relief, they want a return to recycling and an environmentally friendly trash disposal policy from the county that doesn’t involve incinerators. They want our city to help our own people to access decent, attractive, and secure affordable housing units and they trust our city to expand the program we’ve run for decades, which has always been a good neighbor, so that our own kids (young working professionals) seniors, and families can be taken care of. Residents want a city where we take care of our own. They want more police community patrols, they want more police hired, they want to feel safer. They want better infrastructure to protect them from flooding when it rains hard. They want us to work to keep taxes low. They want a city hall that listens to them, is responsive to them, works for them and puts politics aside. In all these ways, I will not disappoint you and I believe our entire City Commission will rise to that expectation.

That said, I will soon begin a Town Hall tour of our city in which you will be asked to contribute your ideas that can be brought back to City Hall and assembled into a strategic plan moving us forward. This is exceptionally important for the future of our city, and I look forward to having candid and direct discussion with all of you about it. Details for those meetings are coming soon. I ask that you attend.

Every year, our city holds a Memorial Day Observance and this year it will be held on Monday, May 27th beginning at 9:00AM at Fletcher Park, located at 7900 Johnson Street. Please consider attending with friends and family to honor all those in the military who gave their lives in defense of our nation. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard will present colors, a wreath will be placed, and every attendee given a flower to place in that wreath in honor of a departed loved one. For more information, please check our website at www.ppines.com. Again, I am humbled by the honor of serving as your mayor.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.

Very Sincerely Yours,

Pembroke Pines Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 78 | MayMid August 2024 8

After 2022’s devastating Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, we all saw the power and destruction that could be looming around the corner. Living in Florida, it’s so important that you’re prepared BEFORE disaster strikes. Would you know what to do if a hurricane hit your area? Who would you call? Where would you go? What would you do? If your home suffers storm damage, chances are the first call you would think of making is your insurance company. In reality, your first call should be to a licensed Public Insurance Adjuster.

Many people simply aren’t familiar with what Public Insurance Adjusters are or what they do. Public Adjusters are state licensed and bonded professionals, and we work for you, the policyholder, not the insurance company. We advocate for your rights, and make sure that you get exactly what you are entitled to. As experts on property loss, we assist you through the entire process. We will review your policy, file a claim, and handle all dealings with the insurance company from A-Z, so you don’t have to worry about it. We will negotiate a settlement that is fair and suits your needs. We can even reopen claims that were unfairly denied or underpaid in the past. A Public Insurance Adjuster can make a big difference in the settlement of your claim, increasing the recovery by up to 700%!

Do you know how to read your insurance policy? Do you know exactly what your policy covers? Most people don’t, because the insurance carriers fill their policies with jargon to confuse and frustrate, hoping you’ll just pay your premiums without really understanding what you’re entitled to. With a Public Insurance Adjuster on your side, you can make sure that you’re not being taken advantage of. Education of the public is our biggest goal. We want you to be an informed homeowner and be able to make the best decisions for you and your family. Even if we don’t feel our service is a good fit for your claim, we will offer as much advice and knowledge as we can pro bono. We also offer free policy reviews, so you can better understand the coverages you have before you need to use them. Your home is likely the most

important and valuable asset you own, and you need someone on your side who is going to protect it.

Our process starts with a free inspection of your home or business, after which we will let you know if we feel our services will benefit you. Our pledge to you is that if we do not believe our involvement in your claim will make a difference, we will tell you up front. Our inspections are free, so it’s best to call us and let us see how you can maximize your claim.

A question we get asked a lot is how much does it cost? To start, there is no cost for the consultation at your property and we work on a contingency fee basis, which means NO RECOVERY, NO FEE. We only get paid when you get paid, there is no upfront cost. After the claim is settled, we get a small percentage of the recovery.

Many people also worry that if they hire a Public Insurance Adjuster their claim will be denied, or their policy will be canceled. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Notions like that are a scare tactic the insurance company propagates in order to keep you from knowing the full extent of your rights. Public Insurance Adjusters are licensed and insured agents of the state. The profession is protected by the State Legislature and regulated by the Department of Insurance. It would be a violation of your rights if any insurance company denies or cancels you based on hiring a Public Insurance Adjuster.

You can use a Public Insurance Adjuster for any type of damage, not only just hurricanes. Damage such as Air Conditioning Leaks, Broken Pipes, Dishwasher Leaks, Fire Damage, Floods, Loss by Collapse, Mold Damage, Roof Leaks, Sinkholes, Smoke Damage, Theft, Vandalism, Water Damage, Wind Damage, Business Interruption and Electrical Surge, are all typically covered perils which we can assist with.

You wouldn’t go to court without a lawyer, why deal with your insurance company without a Public Adjuster! Let us defend your rights and make sure you get what you’re owed! Call us for your FREE INSPECTION! 24 Hour Emergency Service. Claimsproconsulting.com. License #W697413 & #W823814. (954) 394-4791.

P

embroke Pines-Florida State University Charter Elementary School’s’ No Place for Hate club sponsored by Mrs. Miranda, the school counselor, engages students through school wide activities to promote positivity, kindness, and peace throughout their school and community. The club consists of students from 3rd-5th grade who meet weekly to come up with ideas for activities to maintain and improve the overall school climate.

The club has sponsored various activities throughout the school year. Most recently, the club brainstormed ideas for two important days; The Day of Service and No Place for Hate Day. The No Place for Hate club really wanted a way to reach the community for these two important events. After lots of discussion, they decided they would like to work with the local library as a way to reach the community. So, for the Day of Service on February 14th, each student in the school decorated a bookmark with kind words and positive messages to be given out with any checked-out book in the youth section of the Southwest Regional Library. The students were so excited to be able to give back to their community in a fun way.

One month later, March 14th, was No Place for Hate Day. The students again wanted to find a way to engage everyone in a fun way and spread a message of peace, kindness, and positivity. The No Place for Hate Club organized a school-wide walk for peace with the help of their club sponsor Mrs. Miranda and 3rd grade teacher Mrs. DeSimone. Each class watched a video about kindness and created a class poster with their pledge for peace and how to promote positivity and kindness in their school and community. The club encouraged all students and staff to wear white or peace shirts for the event. On the day of the event, Mr. Daniel, the school music teacher and drumline director, played songs of peace during the walk. All students and staff then walked around the school with their posters to spread their messages of kindness and peace. The No Place for Hate club was cheering on all students and staff as they walked around the school during the peace walk. All students and staff were excited for the event. The club students were really excited to see the event that they created and the positive message they were spreading in their school.

The club actively works to promote this positive atmosphere at the Pembroke Pines Charter- FSU campus and hope that these special activities that are done in their school can have a ripple effect into their community. We are proud of our students and staff. 601 SW 172nd Avenue, Pembroke Pines, 33029. (954) 499-4244.

Dear Pembroke Pines Community,

I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new principal of Palm Cove Elementary, appointed December 2023. I am deeply honored to join this vibrant community of students, parents, teachers, and staff. Prior to being appointed as the principal of Palm Cove, I have dedicated my career to education within the Broward County Public School system. My journey began as an elementary classroom teacher, and I later served as Literacy Coach at Chapel Trail Elementary school in Pembroke Pines. I had the privilege of being and assistant principal at Beachside Montessori Village in Hollywood. Each step of this journey has reinforced my commitment to student success and community collaboration. Most recently, I served as the principal of Coral Springs PreK-8/Elementary for nine and a half years. During my years at Coral Springs PreK, I was able to implement several student driven programs and raise the school’s grade. I had the privilege of leading the school when it was transitioned from an elementary to a combination school housing PreK - 8th grade students and now back to elementary.

Palm Cove Elementary School has a rich legacy of achievement and pride. I am excited to build upon this foundation and work alongside all of you to create an exceptional learning environment for ALL students. Together, we will celebrate

our successes and overcome any challenges that come our way.

Open Doors and Listening Ears: I believe in an open-door policy. Whether you are a parent, guardian, student or community member, your voice matters. Please feel free to reach out to me with any concerns, ideas, or points of pride.

Let’s collaborate to make Palm Cove Elementary an even stronger and more nurturing place for our children.

Looking Ahead: Together, we will provide rigorous and relevant experiences for our students, fostering their growth and preparing them for bright futures. As we embark on this journey, I am filled with hope and optimism. Let’s create lasting memories, celebrate achievements, and support one another every step of the way.

Thank you for welcoming me into your community. I am eager to meet each of you, learn from your experiences, and contribute to the success of our school. Please stay safe, and I wish us a fantastic remainder of the school year.

Palm Cove Elementary is located at 11601 Washington Street, Pembroke Pines, 33025. (754) 323-6800.
