Dear Readers:

Welcome Spring! It’s my favorite time of year to be outdoors enjoying all that our communities have to offer. The cities of Davie, Cooper City & Plantation have plenty of fun, family-friendly events and activities for every member of the family this spring. Maybe it’s time to fulfill that new year’s resolution and sign up for an adult class or activity, perhaps one you can participate in while your child is engaged in another class or sport. I can’t think of a better way to get out in the community to meet your neighbors and make some new friends.

Spring Break & Summer Camp registrations are happening now! Programs fill up quickly, so be sure to page through our summer camp directory for a preview. We feature many summer camps that are available in 2023, from sports camps, art camps, theatre camps, nature camps, academic camps, and so on, there are plenty of options to choose from. We are sure you’ll find one that your child will enjoy. Spring Break is the week of March 20 for Broward County Public Schools. Spring break camps & programs can be found in the Main Directory (red tab) that will keep the kids active and engaged during spring break this year. It’s also a new season for sports registrations so be sure to check out all that’s available this spring. Whether it’s a new sport, activity or club, children who are involved have been proven to have better success rates in school than those who don’t participate. Overall, students’ GPAs, test scores, attendance, graduation rates and college acceptances are much higher when they are engaged in their school and extra-curricular activities. Be sure to look through our Events Calendar. There are plenty of fun events happening to celebrate Spring, from Egg Hunts, festivals, outdoor concerts, rodeos, plays, dances and more!

I’d like to thank our issue Sponsor Baptist Health that’s located right in Plantation, ready to serve your family’s healthcare needs and our advertisers for their continued support. Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. Be sure to tell them you found them in Sports & Activities Directory. I look forward to seeing you around the community this spring! Cheers to a happy, healthy spring!

My best to you,

Dear Cooper City Residents,

Happy New Year! I hope the holiday season was filled with many moments of joy, love, and laughter with those you cherish most.

Spring is around the corner, and it signals the return of Cooper City’s Founder’s Day! This signature day in “Someplace Special” will be taking place on March 11, 2023. I look forward to spending a fun-filled day alongside residents and visitors. Our Parks and Recreation Department is working on a schedule filled with events and activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Founder’s Day will get started with the parade down SW 90th Avenue and all the traditional pomp and circumstance that comes with it. Afternoon activities will be held at Brian Piccolo County Park, where the evening concert and fireworks show will cap off the exciting day. Please visit the city website at www.CooperCity.gov/Calendar to see a full list of activities and do not forget to follow the city’s social media pages to receive updates and notifications about all city events and programs.

Coming up in April, I hope you will have time to “hop” over to Flamingo West Park for an “Egg-Stravaganza.” The egg hunt is always an enjoyable opportunity for friends and neighbors to get together and spend quality time at one of Cooper City’s beautiful parks. Of course, the end of March and the month of April will bring meaningful days on the calendars of our religious communities. My wish is that the holy month of Ramadan is filled with many blessings for our Muslim neighbors, I pray that our Jewish brothers and sisters enjoy a happy and healthy Passover, and for our Christian community to be filled with hope, love, and peace this Easter.

The spring season is a time for new beginnings and there are many new things happening in Cooper City. Parks and facilities are receiving upgrades, while portions of our community are seeing a beautification plan in action. Our Public Works Department has been revitalizing a stretch of Stirling Road, adjacent to Flamingo Gardens and Forest Lake. New playground equipment, purchased last year, will be installed in certain parks, and a drainage improvement project at Bill Lips Sports Complex is in progress.

Meanwhile, we have been moving forward with our strategic priority of proactive public safety. The City Commission has made significant investments in our city’s future. In conjunction with the BSO Cooper City District, a RealTime Crime Center is taking shape and will be bolstered by equipment strategically placed around the city. Furthermore, a new fire engine, ladder truck, and fire rescue truck have been purchased, all specifically suited to serve the needs of Cooper City.

Many wonderful things are happening in “Someplace Special” and I invite you to be a part of the process. Please get involved and share your thoughts and opinions at City Commission meetings.

As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Dear Davie Residents,

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season with their loved ones. The Town of Davie has an exciting year planned for all our wonderful residents. It is once again time for one of Davie’s long-standing traditions, the 86th annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo. As the redevelopment of downtown Davie continues, the festival will again be hosted at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex. This year, we are proud to announce that the festival will return with a Friday night kick-off event on February 24, followed by two fun-filled days, taking place on Saturday, February 25 and Sunday, February 26.

The festival will kick off with a Concert in the Park on Friday, February 24 from 6:00PM-9:00PM. The evening of family fun will include arts & crafts vendors, children’s activities and more. Food and beverage will also be available for sale. Please be sure that you bring your blankets and lawn chairs, so that you and your family can enjoy the band performing under the stars. The festival grounds in Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex will open at 9:00AM, on Saturday, February 26, and the parade will travel through the park beginning at 10:00AM. Please arrive early to secure the best spot along the parade route, and to enjoy a homemade meal by supporting the Kiwanis Club during their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser. This year’s Festival activities include arts & craft vendors, musical entertainment, “Cowboy Town” petting farm and western carriage display, information displays and a farmers’ market. There will also be a Kids Korner with rides and activities for children of all ages to enjoy. In addition, for all the dessert lovers, the Davie Woman’s Club will host the annual Strawberry Festival which is a crowd favorite. The Weekly Brothers will once again present the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo at 7:30PM, on Saturday, February 25, and at 2:00PM, on Sunday, February 26. I can’t wait to see everyone in “Cowboy Town,” during one of my favorite yearly events.

The Town of Davie offers numerous other events for our residents throughout the year. Join us on Saturday, March 11, for a Bike Rodeo hosted by the Town of Davie and Broward County that will take place at Vista View Park. This fun, family event will focus on bicycle safety that will help ensure that Davie youth is secure while getting some much-needed exercise. On Saturday, April 8, the annual Hippity-Hoppity Egg Hunt, will take place from 9:00AM to 12:00PM at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex, one of the Town’s most action-packed events. Admission is FREE for Davie residents and includes an egg hunt for children ages 0-11. Children will enjoy inflatable rides, a petting farm, hayrides, train rides, a DJ party and bunny ears (while supplies last). Additional activities (at a cost) include face painting, arts & crafts vendors, pictures with Peter Cotton Tail and food trucks. Children will be divided into age groups and special prizes will be awarded for secret eggs. Don’t forget your cameras and baskets! The Town has also revamped our Sounds of the Town Concert Series. Join us at Bamford Sports Complex on Friday, March 17 and Friday, April 14 for our upcoming concerts that feature local bands and food trucks at Bamford Sports Complex from 6:00PM-9:00PM.

Participation in recreational programs and activities provides many health benefits to youth, adults, and seniors. Whether its swimming, fitness, youth sports, special events, or recreation classes that interest you and your family, the Town of Davie has something for everyone to enjoy. As you browse through the Sports and Activities Directory, keep a lookout, as all the programs provided by Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department that begin with “Davie”. For more information on any Town of Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941.

As always, see you at the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Sincerely,

Dear Plantation Residents:

As we welcome Spring, The City of Plantation has lots of great projects going on including a master plan for Central Park, community garden plans, honor awards and new office hours with the mayor. Read on for the details.

The City Council approved spending up to $318,520 with Wannemacher Jensen Architects, Inc., for a master plan for Plantation Central Park. We will eventually be using money from the 2016 bond voters approved to upgrade our city’s most popular park. Ideas include creating a central location for tennis and pickleball and revamping the gym. There will be plenty of opportunity for public input as we formulate a plan, and council members emphasized hearing what people want is vital. If you’re heard the term “master plan” before, it might be because a master plan for ALL of Plantation’s parks was approved by the city council in early 2020. That endeavor helped map out a 10-year road map to help the city meet the current and future recreation needs of the community.

Our plan to develop a community garden took a step forward this month when we met with leaders of the Plantation Garden Club. Most endeavors of this kind require a partner, and the garden club is willing to assist. First, though, we need a good space for the garden. We’re working on it.

The Broward County Code Officials Educational Association chose Plantation’s Carmen Hurlbut as Chief Structural Inspector of the year 2022. Hurlbut, who has been with the city for five years, was picked by the committee for her outstanding work with the architects, engineers and contractors applying for permits in Plantation. She is the city’s assistant building director and chief structural inspector. “Carmen goes the extra mile to assist them with some of the complex issues that arise in construction and code enforcement,” said William Gale, Building Development Director. Gale adds that Hurlbut also has a calm demeanor when working with homeowners with code enforcement issues. Many are working without a permit. “She can take what seems to be an overwhelming situation for the homeowner and guide them through the process,” Gale said. “She takes most of the anxiety (and sometimes anger) out of the situation.”

Hurlbut joined Plantation after working for her own company alongside her husband, Cliff; she says both felt a passion for the construction field since they married in 2005. She recalls applying for permits throughout Broward County and dreaming of working for a Building Department one day. That dream came true when a City of Plantation Structural Inspector encouraged her to apply for a vacant position. Since 2018 Carmen feels honored to work side by side with what she calls “The Powerpuff Girls” (Joanna, Joanne, Carolina, Judy, Lucy, Maritza, Melissa, Nadia, Diana, Dominic, Vanessa, Kay, Pam, Marta, Pearl, and Brenda). Most of the time, this team of ladies “pave the road” for a more accessible transit of the permitting process for homeowners/contractors and make Carmen’s workload lighter, she says. “This convinces me that hard work is never overlooked, and I hope it is an inspiration for others,” she said. To give residents time for longer discussions with me, I have created Office Hours. I usually block off from 1:00PM-4:00PM on Fridays for those with a specific issue, or for groups of young students to visit me at City Hall. If you want to come by, schedule a time via AskCityHall.org. Questions or comments? I prefer email. Mayor@Plantation.org.

Sincerely,

The Weston Warriors Youth Tackle Football and Cheerleading Program was founded in 1995 as a pioneer member of the American Youth Football League, (AYFL). In 2017, we began a 5-year stint in Pop Warner. The Warriors joined the American Alliance Youth Football, (AAYF) in 2023, as a founding member, along with other AYFL pioneer members in order to return to our core values of keeping the children’s best interests first. The AAYF is the South Florida chapter of North West Florida Youth Sports Association (NWFYSA).

The main goal of Weston Warriors is to develop character and confidence in children through competition in Football, Cheerleading & Track by fostering life lessons which are inherent in these sports. We also place a high emphasis on academic performance and community involvement.

Some of the many benefits of joining the Weston Warriors within the American Alliance Youth Football League are the following:

• The opportunity to compete against the best in the nation. Local Champions advance to State / Regional competitions & those that qualify can pursue a National Championship.

• Fun, Fun, Fun! – The #1 reason kids play sports.

• Creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

• Safety, Safety First! - Highly qualified coaching teaching proper techniques which reduces the risk & reality of injuries.

• Coaching Education Programs & extensive background checks required for all coaches & staff.

• Developing well rounded athletes that promote self-esteem, inclusivity, and diversity.

• More than just Athletes - We require all of our participants to perform

adequately in school before allowing them to play.

• Family Atmosphere! – Join family & friends for great fun at Warriors’ events and volunteer opportunities throughout the year such as Pep Rallies, Homecoming events, and community parades to name a few.

Off season conditioning is included for registered Football players and Cheerleaders which begins in May. Regular season practices start in summer. We offer a summer football camp to help players build on their skills. Football games run from mid-August to October with playoffs for qualifying teams into November. National competitions are early December. Cheerleaders will cheer at games and will compete in local competition towards the end of the football season; qualifying Cheer teams may advance to Regional and National competitions. Practices average 3-4 evenings per week according to age/coach. Teams fill quickly, early registration is encouraged.

Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation) | Issue 60 | FebruaryApril 2023 36 FAMILY HEALTH

Help for Parents

It seems like a simple question. But often parents are treated as if they should already know the answer. When the school calls and tells you that your child is misbehaving or acting out many questions are sure to follow. Do they do those behaviors at home? Has the school done anything to try to correct the behaviors? Regardless of the answers, the next question you may ask is what are you to do about it?

There are books. There are parenting magazines, classes or forums online. There are neighbors and relatives who will be happy to tell you what they did with their own child. But when the answers do not work or you cannot find a credible source, you may ask yourself…what am I supposed to do?

There are a few basics that should work in most situations. The first one is to talk with your child. Whether they are 7 or 17, engage them in conversation. This will allow you to have a straight forward (and hopefully comfortable) talk with them when the situation (such as the school calling) arises. Tell them what happened and ask them to share their explanation of the situation. There are times when the communication is already strained or the problems are more severe but for the sake of this article

we will start at the beginning.

Give them the benefit of the doubt. The truth is often in the middle. Try not to assume that they are immediately at fault, but also be careful not to jump to their defense too quickly. Take the time to work out the problem with a focus on the solution. Punishment versus reward is a frequent topic in our office. Research universally shows that people will work harder to earn (rewards, privileges, money) than they will to avoid consequences. Use that as the motivation to change behavior. And if any situation begins to repeat or escalate reach out to a professional for guidance. In our current world, many parents are working with Psychologists, therapists and similar professionals to gain support as they raise their family. For most of us there are few things as important as our children. Reaching out to an expert can go a long way towards getting us the answers AND providing the support we need as a parent. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

Plantation Park elementary school is known as Plantation’s hidden gem. The school offers a wide variety of events and activities that allow all its students the opportunity to shine. In the Spring, our students will participate in monthly book swaps, elocution competitions, and debate tournaments, in addition to the music, art, and academic events that are already taking place throughout the year.

Book Swaps happen once a month and allow students to come in with a book they are ready to exchange for a new book that they have not yet read before. Participation is free, and the books cover a wide variety of interests. The Book Swap is run by our PTA, and the students look forward to it every month. In addition, the students have an opportunity to be “Caught Reading” daily which allows their name to be entered into a drawing, where those who are selected can choose a brand-new book to add to their home library.

Elocution Competitions at Plantation Park Elementary also take place in the spring. Elocution is when students choose a poem to recite from memory in front of a crowd. They are judged on their articulation, pronunciation, memorization, and showmanship. Advancing to the final round means they can win a trophy and bragging rights for the next school year. Every grade level participates, and it’s wonderful to see the creativity that the students display. We have been fortunate enough to have school board members, school district personnel and city council members participate as judges for this exciting tournament. We could not do it without them.

Plantation Park’s Debate Club participates in its final match of the year during the spring. They prepare all year long for this match, and it is the highlight of their year. Students travel to the host high school and compete in a variety of categories. We are very proud to say that we have had several winners from Plantation Park over the past few years.

This year our students have also participated in the Kids Heart Challenge to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Students have two weeks to raise funds, earn prizes, and participate in heart healthy activities during PE. The American Heart Association also provides them with information on how to perform hands-only CPR if they find themselves in a situation that needs it. We are proud to say that our students have raised over $7,000 this year for the American Heart Association. We know that it is going to go a long way in helping students who were born with or develop heart problems.

For these activities, and so many more, Plantation Park Elementary has often been referred to as the “hidden gem” in the City of Plantation, and we will continue to do everything in our power to maintain that wonderful title.

Plantation Park Elementary is located at 875 SW 54th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323-7150.

updates.

Under beautiful skies and nice weather, Tropical Elementary students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth participated in the annual Field Days at Seminole Park, which is located across the street from the school. The administration, staff, faculty, PTA, parent-volunteers, i9 Sports, school security and the community came together to make Field Days 2022 memorable for our students. Our physical education teacher, Johonna Cameron coordinated the events that were a successful school experience. The school’s staff and the parents’ effort were outstanding and was a cause to be celebrated. The students benefited on so many levels.

The event’s activities included relay races, sack races, an obstacle course and a game of tug of war. The students danced to upbeat music and enjoyed healthy snacks. There was a lot of planning and communicating between the school administrators, the Coach and our PTA parents to make it all run smoothly. Parent- volunteers assisted in laying out the equipment, clean up, providing water and snacks, music and of course, encouragement. The parents were placed at specific stations to assist the children towards the activities and to maintain safety. The events were a culmination of activities practiced during the students’ P.E. classes. The students demonstrated their personal best as they moved through the activities on the field. Each grade level was

scheduled for two hours over the three days. Second and fourth grade participated on November 14. Kindergarten and third grade on November 16, and first and fifth grade rounded out the week on November 17.

One of Coach Cameron’s goals was to build strong student relationships through cooperative play and encouragement. Students at the elementary level have varied skills and abilities. However, they are taught to encourage each other to achieve their personal best and to have fun safely. They are challenging themselves. However, the game of tug of war provided an intra class competition. Class spirit was evident as seen in the pride students showed as each class had their own t-shirt design and color. A water break was scheduled to keep exhaustion at bay. Healthy snacks were available at the end, and were provided by our generous PTA. This made the event feel like a celebration. When asked “how did they like field day?” A typical student’s response was, “the events were fun, but the tug of war competition was hard.” Field Days, 2022 was an experience to be remembered. Is there a future track and field olympic champion in the making? We will see!

Tropical Elementary is located at 1500 SW 66th Street, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323- 7750.

Plantation Middle School is proud to be the first middle school in the Broward County Public School system to be distinguished as a Lead4Change Certified School. Lead4Change is a student leadership program funded by The Foundation for Impact on Literacy and Learning and the Lift a Life Novak Family Foundation. David Novak of The Novak Family Foundation is the former CEO of Yum! Brands better known as KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and The Habit Burger Grill. The Lead4Change Student Leadership Program gives students the opportunity to learn outside the classroom while working to meet a community need through project management, decision-making, and teamwork. Each year, student teams compete for a chance to win grants for their charity of choice and tech products for their school or youth club.

The Lead4Change program was introduced to Plantation Middle School by the former principal, Dr. Sherri N. Wilson and Tanya Thompson, Grants Manager for Broward County Public Schools. For the past three years, Ms. Kenia “K” Brown, the media specialist at Plantation Middle School has taught students in an elective class using the Lead4Change curriculum. The nationwide competition requires students to choose a community service project, design a logo, develop a mission statement, create print and video advertisements about the project and finally implement the project. Students design community service projects and learn about leadership, service and public speaking. In 2019, students won $10,000 for their “Motivational Mondays” project.

Students recorded motivational videos on the FlipGrid platform. Schoolwide students could watch and listen to positive videos every Monday. A video of the $10,000 check being awarded can be viewed

In 2020, Ms. Brown’s students won $500 for “Kites4Care”and the then magnet coordinator, Dr. Coniell Bursac’s students won $500 for “Tips for 6th” providing helpful tips to incoming 6th graders about what to expect in middle school. In 2021, Brown’s students won another $500 for “Patriot Bond Sports”. Students were paired in competitive games like corn hole, table tennis, football toss and 1 to 1 basketball games with selected teachers.

In discussing the impact the Lead4Change program has on student self-efficacy, Brown stated, “The participation of Plantation Middle School students in the Lead4Change community service leadership program has increased student awareness of current events and civic mindedness. Students were quite passionate about the varying talking points. The Lead4Change curriculum provided students the opportunity to dig deep into self-concept, strengthen interpersonal communication and intrinsic leadership skills, showcase knowledge and empathy for others, research global student advocates and understanding how intrinsic leadership skills and passion about interests can be an opportunity to lead for change”.

Mr. Qaiyim, the new principal at Plantation Middle School, echoes the sentiments of Ms. Brown in regarding to the Lead4Change initiative. “As the new principal, I have seen the impact of the Lead4Change initiative implementation on campus, and I am excited about continuing and enhancing the opportunity for students to participate.”

Plantation Middle School is located at 6600 W. Sunrise Boulevard, Plantation, 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-4100.

School is a journey that is different for each student. All parents understand that it’s important for their children to keep up in the classroom, but it’s also important that students each learn at their own pace.

Why? Students who are given the time and support to fully understand concepts as they move throughout a subject are less likely to have gaps in their knowledge that will come back to haunt them later on. At Huntington, we refer to this as skill mastery, but it’s a well-known concept in the world of education.

Mastery of skills is essential for deeper learning. Students who are encouraged to master knowledge before moving on to the next concept are inherently taught to persevere and approach learning with a growth (rather than fixed) mindset. They also build their confidence in the process.

The challenge: skill mastery requires individualized instruction

In concept, skill mastery makes a lot of sense. But in a classroom of 20 or more students, teachers are not always able to personalize instruction and give each student the attention they need when a concept or unit doesn’t click for them. Many students will keep up with the teacher as they teach to the entire class. But there will always be some students who struggle to do so and miss important knowledge that is required to understand subsequent topics.

When this happens, those students might perform poorly on homework and tests, but the class continues onward. Often, these students must simply carry on and do their best to continue grasping the successive lessons. But as school advances from elementary to middle and high school and classes become harder, small skill gaps can easily become bigger and bigger.

Taking a time out to catch up

If you notice your child—no matter their age—struggling with things like…

• Low grades or inconsistent grades (e.g., poor grades on some homework, mediocre

grades on other homework, often in the same subject)

• Lack of confidence

• Diminished self-esteem

• Poor time management due to getting stuck on certain homework …it’s important to address the problem. No two students learn exactly alike or at the exact same pace, which makes 100% mastery of skills with 100% of students very difficult to achieve in any classroom.

Your child needs help bridging the gap between what they need to know in one or more subjects and what they actually know. If those gaps are left uncorrected, the problems will continue to grow.

Skill mastery is important

Students who master topics before moving on to new ones are shown to have higher levels of achievement in school, greater confidence, better comprehension and long-term retention, and a greater commitment to lifelong learning, among many other benefits.

If you want to help your child catch up their skills, call Huntington at 1-800 CAN LEARN. We’ll perform an academic evaluation on your child’s abilities, identify what skills your child still needs to master and develop a customized program of instruction to get them there. Let’s help your student master knowledge and finish the school year strong!
