SPECIAL

Dear Cooper City Residents,

As the days become longer and the weather continues to warm up, we know that many of you are eagerly anticipating the start of our summer camp. Our city is committed to providing safe and enjoyable summer camp experiences for children of all ages, and we are excited to share some of the preparations we are making with you, in order to have a successful summer. Our Parks and Recreation team has been working tirelessly, making sure that this year’s summer camp will be one of the most fun and engaging experiences for children of all ages.

The team has taken great care to plan a wide range of activities and programs that will keep the children entertained and engaged throughout the summer. From sports, to arts and crafts, to educational workshops and field trips, there will be something for everyone.

This year’s summer camp is divided into two sessions. The first session will take place from June 12 to July 7, with no camp on July 4. The second session will be from July 10 to August 2. Registration began for Cooper City Residents on April 10. Nonresident registration began May 1, and registration ends on June 1.

Please, do not leave registration for the last minute. Registration can be completed at the City’s Community Center, located at 5000 SW 90 Place or at the Pool and Tennis Center, located at 11600 Stonebridge Parkway. In addition, payment plans are available. This can help parents, who are facing financial difficulties, give their children the opportunity to attend summer camp.

We believe that this year’s summer camp will be a great opportunity for our children to make new friends, learn new skills, and have fun in a safe and supportive environment. We are committed to providing the best possible experience for all children who attend, and we are confident they will have an unforgettable summer.

Thank you to our Parks and Recreation team for their hard work and dedication in making this year’s summer camp a success. We are proud of you, and we know the children will appreciate your efforts.

As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option 6.

Sincerely,

Hello Davie Residents,

I hope that everyone is looking forward to another exciting summer in Cowboy Town, Davie, Florida! As usual, we have a wide variety of unique activities and special events for all our Town of Davie Residents to enjoy over the next few months.

One of the best ways to beat the heat this summer is to go swimming in the Town’s pools located at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center and Betty Booth Roberts Park. You can also cool off at our splash pad located at Shenandoah Park. Swim lessons, which are an essential component of the Town’s #SaferBy4 campaign, are available year-round at the Fitness and Aquatic Center. #SaferBy4, spearheaded in the Town of Davie by both the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department and Fire Department is an effort to reduce preventable childhood deaths. The campaign is designed to help children reach their fourth birthday by teaching our youth basic water safety skills through swim lessons.

This summer we are excited to announce that the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department will have the Sounds of the Town Concert Series at Bamford Sports Complex in addition to our fantastic annual events. On Monday, May 29, the Town of Davie and the Boy Scouts will honor our fallen heroes during our annual Memorial Day Event. The freedom of expression and liberties that we enjoy in the United States of America are due to the sacrifices made by these extraordinary individuals. The parade will start at 10:00AM and will be followed by a ceremony to honor those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

On Saturday, June 3, the annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo will be held at the Town of Davie Golf and Country Club. This catch and release event, which focuses on conservation and sportsmanship, allows the entire family to enjoy a morning together by the water. Prizes will be awarded for various categories of fish caught, including the biggest and most unusual catch. We look forward to seeing our outstanding Davie anglers together again trying to reel in the big one!

Join us at Bamford Sports Complex on Tuesday, July 4, for our annual Independence Day Celebration, to commemorate the birthday of our incredible nation. Fun times will be had from 5:00PM-9:00PM, with live music, food trucks, and games and activities for the entire family. Don’t forget to bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the best fireworks display in South Florida!

When looking through the Sports & Activities Directory remember: Whether it’s youth sports, fitness, swimming, recreation classes, or special community events, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has activities for everyone in your family. For more information about any Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941.

As always, see you in the parks, and remember to like us on Facebook.

Sincerely,

10 Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation) | Issue 61 | MayMid August 2023

Dear Plantation Residents:

One of the core values of our city is sustainability. As responsible stewards of the environment, the city has adopted an administrative policy banning the use of polystyrene (styrofoam) products at events taking place on city property or in city facilities. This prohibition will be incorporated into city contracts and agreements going forward. The city also prohibits intentional release of helium filled balloons on city property.

Before becoming mayor, I had been out of the everyday workplace for a few years.

Then, for a few Fridays, I kept seeing what I imagined was an overabundance of red shirts worn. Well, I finally asked someone. Our Public Works, our Building Department and others wear red each Friday as a way to Remember Everyone Deployed. I’m very proud of our employees and am always happy to learn something new. I’m in.

Our Parks and Recreation Department – well, actually our whole city government – said farewell to Wes Lockard, who is retiring after 22 years. Lockard worked on special events, focusing on scouting musical acts in the area that could make the grade for our popular Rock the Park series. If you happened to be in line during the pandemic for our food giveaway, you also likely saw Wes. He was the one trying to trick you by saying “are you here for the drug test?” Trivia: Wes was the original Miami Heat “Burnie” mascot, from 1988-2001.

The Plantation Police Department’s latest crime-fighting tool is something you’d rarely notice: We are in the process of installing 39 automated license plate readers throughout the Gateway District. This technology detects stolen vehicles and wanted criminals and sends real time alerts to police officers in the area. (Surprisingly, once a car is stolen, the thieves often use it to commit more crimes.) It can also help find missing or kidnapped persons. The police have methodology for placing the plate readers. This first step is to cover the State Road 7/U.S. 441 area. Plans for the Midtown District and the rest of the city are already under way.

This project is expected to continue throughout the rest of the year due to engineering and permitting requirements with Broward County Traffic Engineering and Florida Department of Transportation.

The Plantation Wildcats 12-and-under tackle football team was lauded for winning a national tournament in Miami in December. Police officer Marvin Alexander is the head coach. The team won their division in the local American Youth Football League, and their ranking qualified them for the Youth National Championship. They defeated a team from Maryland for the title on Dec. 18.

The Peters Elementary Robotics team was lauded for winning the Robot Rumble held on Dec. 17 at South Plantation High. Using their knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetics, mechanics and force, the team worked together and encouraged each other to solve a number of challenges.

Councilmember Erik Anderson read a proclamation for Marjorie Faye Boyles, a long-time educator at South Plantation High. She served as a media specialist from 1973-2005 and passed away recently at age 95. She was also responsible for helping coworkers adopt modern technology, Relay for Life, Operation Shoebox (supplies for soldiers), Hurricane Charlie Relief and gardening-related activities.

Feel free to contact me with any suggestions, questions or concerns. Email me at Mayor@Plantation.org.

Sincerely,

IMPROV

DAVIE IMPROV

For beginners and advanced players. Learn improv and get confident! Our improv class introduces students to fundamental concepts of improv like “Yes, And.” Through group exercises and games, students will rehearse spontaneity, listening, being present in the moment, taking risks, and other basic building blocks of improvisation, all in a supportive environment that embraces the idea of trusting yourself and failing joyfully. As the classes progress, students also learn scene work which prepares them for performance. Our classes follow a syllabus of training; though, you may enter the class at any time. Class showcases are performed at the end of the trimester (Summer, Fall, Spring). Visit https://www.thisisimprov.com/classes for more information.

HELPING CHILDREN BUILD POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM

As parents, educators and adults, we aim for children to grow up feeling confident and capable of handling life’s problems. How do we give them the tools needed to be confident and successful? One way is through teaching children how to build their sense of self-esteem. Having positive self-esteem is extremely important to mental health development as self-esteem impacts the choices and decisions children make, the type of relationships we have, and the way we feel and think about ourselves. Research has shown lower sense of self-esteem is directly liked to mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and an increase in trauma symptoms (if trauma has occurred). Individuals with low self-esteem are more likely to criticize themselves, have more negative thoughts, have difficulty recognizing positive qualities, taking compliments, striving to reach goals and gain success, and have difficulty within relationships.

Self-esteem is the extent that a person believes they are capable, significant, successful, and worthy. It is made up several different pieces that fit together to form a bigger picture. Building positive self-esteem might seem like an abstract concept, but there are small steps you, as a parent, can use to teach your child how to believe in themselves, be successful, and tackle any situation with capability.

• Self-Worth: being worthy of respect, being loved or valued. Consistently tell and show your child through action they are loved and they are important. Talking about boundaries and showing them, they are respected is an important piece as well; allowing your child to have a voice and a say. Allowing your child to assert themselves to say no to hugs or touch from others can be an example of this. Taking with them about their opinions, needs, and wants and taking all of it into consideration. Make them feel important with a say in their life. Teach your child that everyone has equal worth and value.

• Self Confidence: feeling of security. Create a space at home where your child

can feel safe to express themselves, to be who they are, and feel protected, cared for and not judged. Having a home with physical stability, structure, consequences, rewards with consistency all will be helpful with creating external security. Internal security can be assisted with telling your child what their strengths and qualities are. This can be shown through modeling confidence and positive self-talk out loud in front of your child. “Oh I love the way I look in this dress” and “even though this task is hard, I know I can do it if I keep trying”.

• Competence/Efficacy: feeling successful; motivation to enter new challenges. Lead by example, and try new activities with your child, be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Share positive thoughts out loud with your child, modeling how to talk through a challenge or work through frustration or emotions that arise from a challenge. Provide excitement and positive discussions around trying new things including food, activities, sports, subjects. Allowing your child to pick new activities to try and allow them the opportunity to independently learn, with parental support if needed. For little ones, for example, if they want to feed themselves, pour their own drink, allow them to try, be there for support, and assist only if needed. It might take more time and patience at first, but eventually they will master the skill, feel competent, and learn they can do it.

• Belonging: feeling a part of something. Having a sense of purpose in their family, home life, school, sport, religious affiliation can build a sense of belonging. Teach them their presence is important and valued by including them. For example, if you are cleaning, give your child a task no matter how big or small, and praise them for the effort in helping. If your child is in sports, tell them they are a valued member of that team, whether it’s cheering their teammates from the sidelines, scoring, or helping a teammate score. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

We know reading, math, science… but what about robotics, fashion design, and drumline? Peters Elementary is proud to provide these after school activities with the help of Enrichment Masters! This program was founded right here in South Florida and works to provide various after school activities to local schools. The students at Peters Elementary are currently involved in groups learning about robotics and engineering, fashion design, and drumline. They meet weekly after school in their respective groups to work on project-based lessons and to enjoy learning and experiencing something they are passionate about.

From Rosey the Robot to R2-D2, robots continue to spark imagination and foster a love for engineering in both kids and adults through the decades. Students will learn about thermodynamics, kinetics, mechanics, and force while building robots, roller coasters, and machines. First, they will learn the basic components of robots and circuits, such as how circuits and electricity work together and how neural networks help with machine learning. Students will also learn about the various types of robots including important robotic terminologies. The program’s ultimate goal is having the students build a functioning robot.

We, at Peters Elementary, had front row tickets to our very own Project Runway! Students that participate in the fashion design enrichment program learn about style, fabrics, sewing, design, and patterns to make clothes, belts, bags, hair bows, and pillows. They learned about the history of fashion throughout the ages, as well as learning about several types of fabrics and materials. They were taught how different

materials and colors can be used together to design shirts, pants, dresses and more. The students learned how to identify various types of fabric including how to stitch, thread, seam, and hem. They then practiced sketching and designing, working towards their final project of bringing their unique fashion designs to life!

Last but not least, and certainly not the quietest… drum roll please….Drumline! Ba dum tss! Students participating in drumline learned drumming techniques in order to perform drumbeats, cadences, and rudiments on the snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, and cymbals as a collective drumline unit. As an introduction, students learned about the variety of drums as well as the tempo and how it provides the basis for any song. They learned how to produce different volumes of sounds using different drum strike weights and how patterns are used to create a beat for a song. By the end of the program, students play as a collective drumline group to the beat and perform a pattern to the song Blinding Lights by The Weeknd.

We are excited to offer three new programs next semester: fashion & accessories design, science experiments club, and guitar. If your child is interested in joining one of these programs, please contact Peters Elementary, located at 851 NW 68th Ave, Plantation, 33317, or call (754) 322-7900.

Silver Ridge Elementary School is often referred to as “a big school with a small school feeling.” It has always been our goal to make everyone feel welcome and valued as a part of our Silver Ridge Family. Our administration, PTO volunteers, and staff work together to offer a wide range of activities and opportunities for students to shine and for families to engage.

Our busy PTO sponsors many events. We recently had our second Family Movie Night, shown on our BIG screen on the back lawn. SRE families can relaxed on their lawn chairs while they watched a family movie, and enjoyed dinner and popcorn from our concession. We will also have another one of our popular “Bingo Nights” this spring and just enjoyed our 2nd Book Fair Family Night of the year. This fun- filled event included games, prizes, music, dancing, dinner, and of course books! Other events include our annual fall FUN RUN and The Annual Kids Heart Challenge. This year, our SRE students raised over $26,000 and had great fun and exercise while helping a worthy cause. Our Silver Ridge community comes together a few times a year for our campus beautification and clean up days, which includes our own Food Forest. With a recent grant and community volunteers, we installed a 1,600 square foot garden with over 50 edible plants. Designed in the shape of a panther paw print, we hope to reap the bounty of our labor this summer and for years to come. Our most recent parent involvement program, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great

Students) has proven to be quite successful. Each interested Dad commits to spend a full day at SRE where they assist with car line, and help as needed in various capacities, and enjoy lunch and recess time with their student.

Students at Silver Ridge may engage in a variety of clubs and activities. We begin each morning greeted by our Safety Patrol students and with our WRSN morning announcements, brought to us by our student crew. Throughout the day, our National Junior Honor Society students may be reading or working with some of our younger students. After school clubs include Chorus, SAVE Promise Club, two Literacy Clubs, and our Spanish Club, where approximately 20 students prepare skits, dances, poems, etc. for the District Elementary School World Languages Academic Competition. We are proud to say that all our team members ALL place in these competitions almost every year. Our newest club is our Debate Team. We could not be prouder of the 27 students who recently competed in their 1st competition. We had 5 students earn winning placements and we cannot wait for our next competition in April!

As you can see, at Silver Ridge, student, family, and community engagement help us to maintain our reputation as a “big school with a small school feeling.”

Silver Ridge Elementary is located at 9100 SW 36 St., Davie, FL 33328 and can be reached at (754) 323-7500.

Fox Trail Elementary’s Debate Team went to their fourth debate tournament on April 12, but first the fifth graders took a field trip to Indian Ridge to see the middle school debate team at the end of March. Fox Trail has started a K-2 debate team for the first time. The K-2 debate team will be sending a few students to the Barnes and Nobles Night on May 4 and to the next tournament thereafter. In past tournaments the debaters have scored more than one medal in each category, totaling 8-10 medals in each tournament. The championship will be only for those students that have earned one or more medals in debate. The championship will be held on Saturday, May 6, followed by an end of the year celebration on May 11. The Fox Trail Elementary debate teams have outdone themselves this year. Here’s what some of our debate team students have to say about their experiences.

Sharanya says, “Debate allows me to increase my essay writing skills while having fun at tournaments with my friends”.

“Performing in duo interpretation with my friends allows me to express myself, have fun while trying to earn a medal and spend the time with other students who share my same interests”, Alexandra says.

Daniel says, “Public speaking is a type of art that’s a fun way of learning to speak in front of others”.

Fox Trail Elementary also has an Art Club. We have some amazing artists among our student body. Their art skills are flourishing as they focus on shading, color mixes, contour drawing, and realism. The Art Club has created many fantastic projects such as water droplets, a realistic apple contour drawing, a realistic pinecone, and shadow drawings. Fox Trail’s Art Club has done amazingly well for themselves.

We are looking forward to the close of another successful year at Fox Trail Elementary. Our students worked hard this year and we hope they enjoy a great summer and will return in the fall feeling refreshed and ready for another great year ahead.

Fox Trail Elementary is located at 1250 S. Nob Hill Road in Davie, 33324 and can be reached at (754) 323-5800.

One of the best things you can help your child work toward as a student is becoming an independent learner. In school, independence is a sign of maturity and confidence. Students who are independent seek to learn for the sake of learning and understand that learning requires discipline and diligence.

The more you can help your child make that transition toward independence as a student, the more equipped they will be for college-level academics and their career.

What is an independent learner?

Put simply, independent learning is when students take ownership of their education and control of the tasks required to learn. They stay on top of what they need to do and engage in homework and studying without having to be nagged by you or their teachers.

It’s obvious why this is important! Independent students are not afraid to fail and recognize that all learning requires effort. They take responsibility for school themselves and acknowledge that success in school will help them reach their goals, even if they haven’t defined them yet. They are persistent, even when a subject or assignment is hard for them. And they tend to comprehend and retain things better than their lessindependent peers.

How can you raise an independent learner?

Teaching your child to be an independent learner isn’t like teaching them how to ride a bike or tie their shoes, but there are still many things you can do to encourage independence. Here are several tips:

• Focus on effort and learning more than grades and GPA. In school, encourage your child to keep in mind that grades matter and praise from teachers is always welcome, but learning is the goal. If your child receives a low grade on a test or assignment, talk about what they think went wrong. Did they follow directions? Study thoroughly? Keep up on class work? And when your child receives a high grade, point out how they got there.

• Set goals and talk about the future. Independent learners have the motivation to succeed in school because they know it will lead to a brighter future. From a young age,

talk with your child about what they like to learn and what school subjects they enjoy most. Talk about college and what your child might want to do for a career one day. Help your child make the connection between their future and their actions today.

• Talk about school as a process of learning. Your child must understand that learning is a journey that will have ups and downs. Remind your child to pay attention to how they learn best and the pitfalls that can make school harder for them. Some students realize early on that they are a strong reader and less strong at math. This will mean they’ll need put extra effort into math homework and ask for teachers’ help. Other students might struggle with organization. Developing good routines will be essential. The more your child knows themselves as a student, the easier they can self-assess and get help when they need to.

• Resist the urge to step in too often. School is and always will be your child’s responsibility, so treat it that way. It’s okay for you to provide guidance and support, but don’t get too involved in the homework process or take over when your child gets stuck. Encourage your child to be resourceful by looking through their notes or textbook when they are confused by a problem or searching the internet for videos to help them. And if you don’t know how to help when your child asks for guidance on that math or science homework, instead have them explain where they’re confused and come up with a few specific questions to ask their teacher the next day.

It’s so important that your child becomes an independent learner. As your child progresses through school and life, the responsibilities only become greater—and teachers expect that your child will be a self-starter who takes initiative to manage their own learning.

If your child struggles to complete homework independently or spends a lot of time on homework but yields little results, call Huntington. We’ll perform an academic evaluation of your child to get to the root of the problem. From there, we will develop a customized program that focuses on the areas where your child needs the most assistance. Call 1-800-CAN-LEARN.
