Dear Readers,

Welcome to the 2018 Spring edition of the Coral Springs & Parkland Sports and Activities Directory. As we look around the country and see the freezing temperatures and snow filled streets, we realize how wonderful our Florida winters are, so get outside and enjoy our beautiful weather! Many families have made this area home because they understand that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs such as Robotics and programming, debate and business classes, but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work. Our two awesome cities offer an array of sports and activities during the upcoming spring months, be sure to sign up soon. Look through the directory for your specific sport or try something new! Our children need a balance of academics and social activities to be well rounded and happy. There are many programs and clubs in our area that offer enrichment, fitness and artistic creativity and we encourage you to explore our directories until you find the right fit. If your children received their report cards and you were unhappy with the results, we have resources to help them, just look in our academic directory for some guidance and direction. Our community is very supportive, we always try and help a neighbor in need. We invite you to partake in a wonderful fundraiser to help one of our own local children who is battling cancer. Logan’s Cruzade, is a 3-on-3 Basketball tournament that will take place on Friday, February 16, from 6-9pm at the Coral Spring Gymnasium. There will be raffles, face painting, balloon art, music, food and lots of basketball. Come out for a great family event while supporting a family near and dear to my heart. I have known this amazing family for the past 10 yrs. Mom, Suzanne, is a local teacher and Father Gil is local basketball, soccer and football coach. I am proud that our area has stepped up to help this family and I hope to see many of you that night. Please check out our camp directory to see options for your spring break plans and to start getting ready for the summer break. There are so many options it will be hard to choose. Our publication is all about our cities and the people who live in them. We want to hear about your children’s awards and achievements. We would love to receive pictures of their athletic and artistic endeavors. Send them to cspdirectory1@gmail.com. Be in the loop and look at our events directory and check us out on Facebook to see what’s going on. Have a wonderful spring! My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Readers,

8

February finds us in the middle of the 2018 legislative session in Florida. From January 9th through March 9th those of us in local municipal government keep a close eye on Tallahassee. What happens in our state capital has great impact (sometimes positive and sometimes negative) on us locally. Our end game, of course, is to protect Parkland and its residents and to advocate in the best interest of both. There are many things we do not control. On a basic level, for example, things like traffic signals and speed limits in Parkland are controlled by Broward County—not the City of Parkland. Public schools are controlled by Broward County Public Schools—not the City of Parkland—although the City does work to support the schools where we can. Therefore, as your public servants, it is important we constantly remain engaged with elected officials and staff on all levels of government who can affect what happens in Parkland. It is through informed and ongoing engagement that we can best advocate for the needs of our City and residents. During the Florida Legislative Session, we must remain vigilant and follow the legislation being introduced that may positively or negatively affect our City and residents. Last legislative session a bill preempting local rule and regulation on micro cell towers in public rights of way passed and was written into law under the objections of most cities in Florida. On a positive note, this year we are closely monitoring and supporting HB 33 sponsored by Representative Slosberg and supported by Representative Kristen Jacobs and Representative Jared Moskowitz. If passed, this bill would make texting and driving a primary offense. In a City that prides itself on safety; we believe this bill would positively affect Parkland. We are also monitoring and advocating against other bills that would have a negative impact on our City. One such bill is HB 575, which, if passed, could limit Parkland’s ability to vote on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization transportation projects. Both before and during the legislative session we continue to advocate for our City and residents with various members of the Florida House and Senate from both political parties and through advocacy groups such as the Broward and Florida League of Cities. If you want to follow some of the bills yourself, you can do so at www.flsenate.gov and www.flhouse.gov. The “bills” links on those sites will provide you quick access to what will be decided in Tallahassee during session. On a local level, if you want to see how your municipal government works, you can join us on February 21st, March 7th, March 21st, April 4th, and April 18th, all at 7:00pm, at Parkland City Hall for our regular City Commission meetings and you can view the agenda and back-up information at www.cityofparkland. org/cc. Additionally, I am having open office hours on Monday, February 12th, 8:00am-10:00am. Please stop by, there is no appointment necessary. Stay up to date on our events and announcements by signing up for the City of Parkland e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at www.cityofparkland.org/notifyme and follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/copfl. If you would like to share a comment or concern with me, you can do so at chunschofsky@cityofparkland. org. I look forward to hearing from you! Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “T

oday’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,” says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to

businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. For more information on hiring a professional tax preparer, feel free to contact Bruce Weinberg at (561) 487-5765 or visit www.cpaweinberg.com.

T

t is a common misconception that drafting estate planning documents is a luxury reserved for the wealthy. While this belief is widespread, it is misleading, and the consequences of failing to plan can be devastating. After examining the true purpose of a simple estate plan, most people would agree that establishing a plan for themselves and their families is necessary and crucial to avoid unnecessary grief in an emergency. Young families should begin with a simple estate plan, tailored to meet their own needs. Plans involving families with young children should begin with the documents discussed below.

Last Will and Testament

Most people draft a Will to dictate the distribution of their property upon their death; however, parents should strongly consider drafting a Will to declare who will care for their young children if both parents perish. Parents usually discuss who they wish to care for their children in the event of their deaths, but few reduce their wishes to writing. If both parents pass away, and no writing exists to nominate a guardian, the court will select a guardian for the children. Often, the court’s selection differs from what the parents would have chosen. Therefore, if you want your wishes to be carried out, it is important to reduce them to writing.

Durable Power of Attorney

A Durable Power of Attorney is a document drafted to allow another person, your agent, to step into your shoes and make financial decisions for your if you are unable to do so. While this document is of obvious necessity when the principal is incapacitated, it has even broader uses. For example, if grandparents, siblings or friends are left to care for children while parents are traveling, working or otherwise unable to be present to make decisions, it would be wise to give the caretaker authority to act on the parents’ behalf. Some powers that a parent-principal may delegate to a caregiver-agent include authority to enroll

children in camp or school, withdraw money from the parents’ account to pay for the children’s expenses, or to dictate the children’s medical treatment during the parent’s absence.

Designation of Health Care Surrogate and Living Will

A Designation of Health Care Surrogate allow an individual to select another person to make health care decisions for him or her if he or she is unable to. A Living Will provides endof-life care instructions to assist your Health Care Surrogate and doctors in making decisions regarding your health. These documents should also contain HIPPA releases, which provide specific individuals with access to medical records, school grades and other private information protected by law. All people over the age of 18 should have these two documents in place, since HIPPA laws prevent the release of any healthcare information to parents once a child reaches the age of majority. Parents should encourage their college-age children to have these documents drafted if they wish for their parents to continue to obtain healthcare information and make healthcare decisions for them in the event of emergencies that may occur while teenagers are away at college. Young parents should draft these documents to avoid family disputes, which may arise if one person is not selected to make these decisions in advance of an emergency. In conclusion, it is extremely important to consult with an attorney to discuss your specific circumstances and to make sure that you are creating a plan that fully meets your needs. A simple plan, which includes the documents discussed in this article, may be enough for your family at this time. Additional documents may be added or replaced as you upgrade your plan over time to provide for increased wealth, blended families, children or other family members with special needs or any other circumstance that impacts your family.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+.Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15

from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE

Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. We are currently providing 3 unique programs.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (VR)

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a federal-state agency that helps people with disabilities prepare for, get, or keep a job. VR offers Transition Youth Services, which help students with disabilities train for a job, continue their education, or find a job after high school. Each student will have the opportunity to participate in career counseling, work readiness training, and work experiences in the community. Students will also learn about self-advocacy and achieving independence through employment. For more information, call the Coral Springs VR office at (954) 346-2828 or visit our website at www.rehabworks.org.

ROCK DREAMS

At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group.

FIT FRIENDS

Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks.

ART WORKS At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page.

READING WITH FRIENDS Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

EXCEPTIONAL FITNESS™ Exceptional Fitness™, is a unique fitness program created specifically for individuals with Autism, Developmental Disorders, and other special and exceptional needs including cognitive and physical disorders using evidence based practices. Is Social Media Impacting our Well-Being? By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

S

ocial media has become a part of everyday life for the majority of internet users. The global amount of time spent on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, is steadily increasing every year, with statistics from 2017 indicating an average of 116 minutes per day. This means that the average person will spend over 5 YEARS of their lifetime on social media! (aweek.com). We must consider the impact that social media has on our well-being and the development of our children as they become engulfed in similar amounts of usage. Several studies have found links between social media use and increased depression, anxiety, body image issues, and relationship problems. However, other studies have identified positive effects of social media use, such as increased social support. While these findings raise important considerations, they are inconclusive. Furthermore, very few studies have contributed to our understanding about why these effects occur. For example, some researchers hypothesize that negative effects may be a result of social comparison or reduced meaningful, face-to-face interaction with others – but the truth is, we just don’t know exactly why! Perhaps the key to determining social media’s true impact on our well-being lies

in investigating the way that we use social media, rather than simply considering whether one uses it or not. In our clinical experience ,we have found that our clients (of all ages) have achieved “healthier” social media use by gaining and implementing the understanding that: 1) Social media popularity (e.g., number of “likes” or “followers”) does not determine one’s true value or worth. 2) The lives of social media users are never as problem-free as portrayed. 3) Support and advice for mental health issues is best sought from professionals, rather than via social media. We have a responsibility as parents to teach our children how to use social media. To do this we need to become models for them. The amount of time we spend on and the way we use social media holds a direct tie to how our children will follow in kind. We will be exploring our own study to better understand how we can positively impact social media usage in our lives and the lives of our children. If you are interested in completing a survey to be included in the study, please email us at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

Studies have shown that the presence of a doula can improve birth in the following ways: reduction in unplanned cesarean deliveries, shorter labor, decrease in the requests for epidurals or other pain medications, decrease in the need for synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin), fewer complications for mother and baby, improved immediate breastfeeding success, and a lower rate of postpartum depression in mothers. Contact me for a free consultation at (954) 914-3933. Learn more about how a doula can help you at www.coralspringsdoula.com.

he Ramblewood Elementary staff wishes everyone in our wonderful community a fantastic 2018! Our students and staff enjoyed many events during the month of December. Our students participated in Field Day activities, coordinated by Coach Alvaro Picado. The parent volunteers and our awesome PTO made this event a great success for the students. We would like to thank the Ramblewood Middle School Band for taking the time to hold a holiday concert at our school for the students and staff. The performance was amazing! The PTO hosted “The Family Olympics” in January. The students, along with their families, had an exciting time playing in Olympic style events. Bounce Houses and delicious food were the highlights of the day.

estglades Middle school is always trying to offer their students new classes and opportunities that will challenge and entice more academic and social skills. Westglades will soon be offering an eSports (electronic sports) club, which is a type of competition utilizing video games. Students will be able to compete in organized, multiplayer video game competitions. This is a unique chance for students who actively play video games, to create a network of friends who can socialize and compete while in a safe and friendly environment. Organized online and offline video game competitions have long been a part of video game culture and we are looking forward to bringing this club to students. Students will build their teamwork skills; enhance their spatial navigation, memory, and reasoning skills. The popularity of eSports has become a very accepted form of entertainment and many colleges and universities are now offering partial to full scholarships to play eSports. Stay tuned for more info about this exciting new club!

Congratulations to the Ramblewood Robotic Red Wolves for winning a 1st Place Project Award at the Somerset Academy Charter School of South Homestead on January 13th. They competed against 13 teams( 4th grade to 8th grade) in a FIRST Lego League Qualifying Tournament. The team impressed the judges with their invention that reduces water pressure in home pipes and avoids those pipes from bursting and costing homeowners thousands in water damage. Under the leadership of Principal Maria Perez, the Ramblewood Elementary faculty continues to focus on increasing student achievement and producing college and career ready citizens. “Go Rams”!

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS!

H

untington Learning Center has started an academic Superstars of the Month program with Sports and Activities Magazine! This program gives students recognition for their achievements. There are many different types of students with many different academic obstacles in their path. These are just a few of their stories: Samantha B. came to our center in hopes to getting a score on the ASVAB test that reflected the job she wanted in the Air force. Samantha came three mornings a week for four hours each day, showing her dedication to getting her desired score. Samantha let us know that she raised her score over 20 points higher than what is was when she started attending Huntington! So many doors were open for her based on her ASVAB score! Kevin M. came to our center in May. He was struggling in reading comprehension and phonics, and did not pass his end of year test. He came to our center all summer, many hours each week. When he started he was not on level for reading, but by the end, he could read at least five paragraphs out loud, and answer comprehension questions correctly! By the end of the summer, when he was retested at school, he passed his test with flying colors. The teachers couldn’t believe the growth he showed. His hard work really paid off and we couldn’t be more proud! We also wanted to share some testimonials from other students and their families: “Huntington has helped me in a way that is unique. In math class I have the highest grade, much to my teachers surprise. I have benefitted tremendously with using real-world

problems found in the Huntington curriculum which includes inferencing and critical thinking. This allows me to understand others and be able to come up with original thoughts, which helps me in my drama and debate classes. Lastly I enjoyed being taught by the teachers here as they make the learning experience comfortable.” – Ashley H., 8th Grade “I brought my child in to be tested in June. He is 7 years old and he was only reading pre school level. He was tutored for 3 days a week at 3 hours a day over this past summer. By the time he was ready to go back to school at the end of August he was reading at a first grade middle of the year level. I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful the staff. They know every kid by name. This center is a very loving and caring center. I would recommend it to anybody.” – The Pistone Family

SCHOOLS the next level. This year we are offering Advanced IT Honors, aka “Coding.” Educators believe that Coding is the most important language in the world right now. The use of technology in all careers is increasing at a rapid rate. Programming/Coding is used to power the machines and software we use every day. Students who learn how to code will have an upper hand when entering the technological work force. Currently, there are 22 students who write HTML Script and Java Code. We hope to grow the course, by 2 or 3 sections for the next school year. Debate Honors is another great enrichment

elective we offer at CSMS. In December 2017, 38 students competed in either Speech or Debate. Last year, 3 students competed at the National Debate Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. One student advanced to the quarter finals. Debate teaches students “real world applications” and public speaking skills. Numerous studies have shown the advantages of participating in school debate programs that benefits nearly every type of student from every cultural and socioeconomic background. Coral Springs Middle is proud to offer such opportunities that allow our students to rise to the top!

WESTGLADES MIDDLE SCHOOL

MEDIA CENTER GRAND REOPENING By Gaby Franklin

On January 22, Westglades Middle School had

the grand reopening of The Den. This is the name of the remodeled and improved Media Center at our school. The Media Center renovation project started approximately 18 months ago. The vision was to make this space a modern, collaborative and inviting area for our children to learn and grow. This huge project was successful thanks to the vision of our PTA president, Chanda James. There were so many other contributors including: many fundraisers and generous donations from parents, countless hours of work and unconditional

support from the PTA board, the Westglades’ SGA, Mr. Bianchi, our principal, Mrs. Stratos, our media specialist; and the entire school staff. We are so thankful for all their work and support on this wonderful media project. The PTA recognizes the invaluable role Media Centers play in our schools and has been focused on preparing an enhanced educational environment for all our students. This remodeled space includes new collaborative learning areas, paintings, artwork, bookshelves and so much more. We certainly hope our efforts inspire not only our students, but other PTAs and schools.

ere at RMS, we are well-known for diverse course offerings in our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) program, and most notably for placing an emphasis on the Arts! Our visual arts, band, and drama students have once again been recognized for their outstanding accomplishments, and we could not be more proud! Four of Mrs. McKinstry’s Art students won in the Governor’s statewide “Art in the Capitol” competition. Three semi-finalists had art work displayed in the Young at Art Museum, and one student, Daniel Brocki, won Best in Show! His art piece will be on display in the State Capitol for a year! Eighth grader, Alexandra Carrillos’ cover design, for the 21st Annual Innovative Teacher IDEA Expo, won first place, and will grace the cover of the Expo program reaching thousands of teachers this year. We also had winners in the Superintendent’s Art Gallery, and 2018 MLK Art & Literary Exhibit contest, with a total of nine top three winners in four competitions! The RMS band, led by band director extraordinaire, Mr. John Nista, also continues to shine throughout the district and the state! We are honored to have had four students selected for the All State Band, represent Broward County, at the Florida Music Educators Conference in

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art & Literary Awards

Students at Forest Hills Elementary worked diligently during the months of November and December to construct art and literary projects that reflected the major contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The chart below displays the honors our students received.

Tampa last month. An astounding thirty students, who auditioned, were selected into the district’s All County Band. These students performed for the public at the Coral Springs City Center on January 30. Five students were also selected into the All County Jazz Band, whose concert will be held at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on March 1, 2018. And finally, a huge shout out and congratulations to the 230 members of the RMS Marching band, as they were selected as the Best Middle School Band in both the Pompano Beach and Coral Springs holiday parades in 2017! In just a few weeks, the talented RMS Junior Thespian Troupe #88655 will be heading to the state festival with their sights set on being state champs once again! Ms. Nagy’s students have already started the year coming home with countless awards from the district competition. Our junior thespians earned 21 Superiors, 7 Excellents, CRITICS Choice in One Act tech, Duet Musical, two Solos Musicals, and Large Group Musical. They also won Critics Choice Honorable Mention in Monologue, Duet Musical, and Make-up Design. The large group was also “State Selected” to represent District 3 at the opening ceremonies of the state festival. Way to go Troupe #88655!

Forest Hills also had 22 other participants that submitted projects in either the individual category, or as a group. Those students received a participation ribbon, and their projects were also on display. We are extremely proud of all of the students who participated in the City of Coral Springs’ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards.

Forest Hills S.T.E.M. Program

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupations related to the field of S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering, and math) are projected to increase another nine million by the year 2022. In order to prepare future generations, Forest Hills Elementary is committed to providing real world applications for all students in Pre-K through fifth grade. Throughout the month of December, students participated in the Hour of Code. Students in the primary grades generated maps, and learned basic computer programming skills through “Blockly”, a drag and drop computer program. In the intermediate grades, students began the process of paired programming. This program has students working together to both create and revise code. While it may seem like students are just gaming, they are learning the computer science skills that are necessary for tomorrow’s career paths. We are so proud of our brilliant students.

magine School at Broward is an “A” graded school. Our school has some of the best test results compared to the other schools in our area. Our Principal, Ms. Darling, is sweet, dedicated, friendly, and caring. She sees the potential in all of her students and tries to help all of us achieve that potential. She even saved a tortoise from being run over by a car! Our school offers soccer, basketball, track, and cheer. We are extremely proud of our cheer team. They are going to compete in the South Florida Showdown for the first time this year. Go team! Imagine Broward has a dedicated team of teachers and staff members. Every year they plan two or more book fairs, dances, and several other schoolwide events. The fundraisers are fun and we can win great things like tickets to see the Miami Heat and meet the team. We have the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and to participate in different field trips throughout the school year. Many of us are looking forward to the upcoming field trip to iFLY which includes a STEM component. One of our favorite field trips is the Washington, D.C. trip done every two years. The 8th graders have the opportunity to celebrate their advancement to high school in one last field trip to Universal’s Gradventure. Our teachers are well educated on their subject areas and use a variety of techniques to make class fun. More than 800 students are fortunate to attend Imagine School at Broward. They will move onto high school prepared to succeed.

SCHOOLS Marlins live auctions. Joseph would paint Marlins players, on air, during the auction and the money the Marlins received from each painting went towards children’s charities. Joseph has painted portraits of Jose Fernandez, Stanton, Ichiro, and Dee Gordon, and has hopes to paint future Miami Marlins Stars one day. The publicity from the Marlin’s auction led him to fly to Washington, D.C. and paint for the Washington Redskins in another live auction. It was an experience he truly appreciated and was very grateful to have been given. Joseph has raised over a quarter million dollars to this point, and doesn’t want to stop until he reaches his final financial goal. He has donated every penny he has received to the Marlins and Panthers foundations as well as to Joe DiMaggio Children’s hospital. No fame, no fortune, just painting to help others has been his mantra since day one. Joseph has worked as a custodian throughout this process and will continue this job until retirement. Joseph has a

beautiful wife Erin Ruth, a sweet daughter Hailey Ruth, and another one on the way. His family is his fortune; the paintings are just his way to give back. Joseph has many long term goals with his painting. One is to reach half a million in sold paintings. He then hopes to sell his story to be made into a book, and wants replicas of his paintings included. His goal for the book is to reach $1 million in sales. At this point, he would like sell his story as a documentary. Ideally, he would spend the rest of his days with his family, and inspiring other artists to use their talents to help others. Joseph is just one man trying to cure children’s illness one painting at a time. His paintings are as special as his heart. You can view his live work at our own Coral Springs event with Anthony Rizzo. Joseph will be painting Anthony to help raise funds for Stoneman Douglas baseball. Come support this great cause while experiencing the talent of one of our own local artists. You can also learn more about Joseph’s painting on his website or visit his FB page at Joseph Gormley Art.

e’s just a local man, with an amazing talent, and a dream. Every day begins with family time, before heading off to work as a custodian at Park Trails Elementary school. Scotsman, Joseph Gormley is a local sought after painter. Several years ago, Joseph created a masterpiece to help raise money to pay for a little girl’s cancer treatment. This girl lived back in Scotland and was helped by his $8,000 painting. Joseph was so happy his work could make a difference in a child’s life. However, he is a local at heart now and wanted to help children in his own community. Joseph painted and sold his works to raise funds, but he wanted to make a larger impact. Knowing he didn’t have the connections on his own, he reached out to a charity event sponsor and formed a connection with Weston Jewelers. The advice he received led him to a great collaboration with Former Miami Marlins Mr. Marlin, Jeff Conine. Jeff helped publicize Joseph’s goal by incorporating his paintings into the

PARK TRAILS READS TO SUCCEED!

We celebrated Literacy the Week of January 22-26.

Our school planned many activities, including a January 25 Barnes and Noble Night, to spotlight the love of reading for our students. We highlighted our student readers, authors, administrators reading to the students and hosted a guest author. We will be celebrating our literacy success with a party hosted by our PTA at a local yogurt store. We had a fabulous Math Night at Publix where our

students used real-life problem solving techniques to follow a treasure hunt around the store. A few of our teachers attended the Florida Technology conference to bring back and share innovative ways to incorporate technology at our school with our students and parents. We are very excited for the new technology on the horizon here at Park Trails Elementary. We are off to a great start for the second half of the year. Stay tuned for more events and upcoming news.
