Dear Readers,

Welcome to the Summer Camp addition of the Coral Springs Parkland Sports and Activities Directory. We are getting ready for a long, well earned, break from school, before we do let’s take a moment to look back on our current school year. As we wrap up another year, we reflect on everything our schools and students have accomplished in the wake of the tragedy that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14th. We will be featuring so many beautiful articles about the great accomplishments of our students, teachers, principals and staff. As they have helped to heal our community. Schools from near and far have come together to raise money for different MSD charities, they have made banners and cards, wrote letters of support and set up scholarship funds. There have been many different displays of togetherness, from meetings about school safety initiatives to walk outs to show support and to help this community heal. Sports teams have put aside their rivalries for cheers of support and friendship, all in an effort to help bring some solace after this horrible tragedy. Our local community and many more came together to help our MSD family and it was nothing short of amazing. It is wonderful to witness how many want to honor the fallen and help the survivors. It is impossible to list everyone, but we did provide a good start. From students, to businesses, and many in between, our community has been blessed by the generosity of friends and strangers. There are so many events happening this summer that are aimed to bring our community together and to raise money for the victims, here are just a few: The Friendship Initiative Gala, Ride for Meadow/School Safety (over Memorial Day Weekend), band performances, and community days of healing, concerts and much more. Plus, don’t miss the 1st Annual Feis Bowl; where MSD Alumni and current students will play in a football bash on June 9th. If you are still having trouble talking to your children about the shooting tragedy, please read the informative article by Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell. They give some great advice on how to parent after such a tragedy. Finally, it’s that time of year again when you need to decide what to do with the kids during the long summer days. Check out the camp directory to guide you on all the options: there are traditional camps, specialty sports, activities and whatever your child’s passion may be, there is something for everyone. Thinking about coaching a team, but a little unsure about how to go about it, check out Parkland Commissioner Grace Solomon’s article on the importance of coaching. This is some great advice!! On a personal note, I would like to thank artist and Parkland mom Nava Lundy for allowing us to use her beautiful paintings to memorialize and celebrate the lives of the students, teacher and coaches that tragically lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas on February 14, 2018. As a parent of a MSD student it has been truly amazing to see the outpouring of support from our larger Broward community, the country, and the world. We are all MSDStrong! Have a wonderful and safe summer and Happy July 4th! My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Readers,

A lot has happened in our City since the last issue of Sports & Activities Directory. We all have a different perspective than we did just a few short months ago. Staying connected to our community can be effective in helping all of us move forward in a healthy way. As is the case this time of year every year, this is a busy and exciting time in Parkland. I want to congratulate all of our seniors who are graduating from high school and college. It always amazes me to see the accomplishments of our students. In recent months the whole nation has seen a glimpse of how articulate and thoughtful they are. We wish them the best of luck as they continue toward a successful future. This is also a time when we celebrate mothers. Mothers give us help, advice, consoling, and, at times, a delicious meal. They are often the first ones to help a friend and neighbor and the last ones to take care of themselves. Our world is a better place thanks to the love, care, and support mothers show not only their families, but their entire communities. As we continue working through our most difficult time, join me in thanking all the moms who help make our community great. As we continue to move forward, as we continue to heal, one way to stay connected to the community is to attend the many events the City of Parkland offers. As always, the City will host a summer camp at the P-REC in Pine Trails Park and a tennis summer camp at the Parkland Tennis Center at Quigley Park. These camps are great ways for kids to stay involved, productive, and active throughout the summer months. Each of these camp options provide a wide variety of activities for kids that will keep them stimulated throughout their camp experience. Visit www.cityofparkland. org/summercamp and www.ParklandFunSummerCamp.com for information on these exciting summer activity options. The City of Parkland Youth Fishing Derby, a popular free event, for age 3-12, has four dates throughout the summer—including one in May, June, and July. Be sure to visit www.cityofparkland.org/fishing to learn how to get the kids involved on Saturday mornings. Of course the Parkland Library never stops programming activities and it’s nearing the time for their summer reading program. Watch cityofparkland.org/ library for start dates and see how you can participate in this annual community learning event. You can also learn about the teen writing workshop, art classes, and other events for all age groups. Keep an eye on our website (cityofparkland.org), Facebook page (facebook.com/copfl), and subscribe to the City’s e-blast (cityofparkland.org/notifyme) to not only stay informed, but to stay connected with your community. I always look forward to hearing from residents. If you would like to share a comment, question, or concern, feel free to reach out to me at any time at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

asketball, video games, school and playing with friends were the most important things to Logan Cruz until he was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia last August. Logan needed chemotherapy, forcing him to take a leave of absence from school and stop playing his favorite sport until he was better. Logan is a 9 year old boy who has a heart of gold and is surrounded by his 2 older brothers Ryan and Ethan and his younger sister, Alexa. His parents Gil and Suzanne are both known throughout our community as Suzanne teaches at Westglades Middle and Gil has coached many of our children in rec sports. This family already had a busy life juggling 4 kids and 2 jobs with tons of extracurricular activities, but they haven’t missed a beat. Each parent takes turns staying with Logan during hospital stays and juggling the activities of the other 3. Both parents are committed to having life remain as close to their normal as possible. Since Suzanne and Gil are committed to life running the same way as it did before cancer struck, they have enlisted the help of family and friends. Grandparents and Aunt D have been to chemo treatment and have taken care of Logan when needed, and everyone has benefitted from this assistance. Cancer is a very expensive disease. It strikes anyone of any race, age, religion and economic bracket. Even if you have insurance, it only covers a small portion of the extraordinary costs. Gil and Suzanne have made some wonderful friends and they decided to help with the costs of Logan’s treatment. Liz DeCastro and Leif Herman met with Gil and Suzanne and proposed a basketball tournament to raise funds to help offset costs. At first the task seemed overwhelming, but Liz became the logistics supervisor, Leif became the basketball game coordinator and Logan’s Cruzade was born. The first meeting was scheduled for the beginning of September. Of course it needed to be postponed since Hurricane Irma visited. After several postponements, the event was scheduled for February 16. This committee grew from Liz and Leif, to include: Michella, Leif’s wife, Evan and Sandy Serchay as well as, Suzanne and Gil.

When people found out about this event, basketball teams quickly formed, volunteers magically appeared and donations were overflowing. Logan’s Cruzade was going to include: a basketball tournament, balloon artists, raffles, foods, face painters, a DJ and lots of treats. The amount of businesses that wanted to participate was amazing and truly is the reason this event was so successful. The night was filled with lots of music, food and basketball and far surpassed the goals that the committee had anticipated. The week of the event, our community was struck by the MSD tragedy. The Cruzade committee met to decide whether to postpone the event or not. After thoughtful consideration, they decided to keep the February 16 date and have a 17 second moment of silence before the event started. This event touched the hearts of so many that even volunteers from MSD came (Mark DeCastro, Leo Scopino and Connor Rice) and supported the Cruzade. As the event was approaching, the response was so great, that teams needed to be turned away. There were 36 teams in total and the ages range from 7-15. The tournament was 3 on 3 basketball games with a single elimination. There was also a free throw competition. Winners of the games and the competitions were awarded trophies given to them by Logan himself. Logan still has a while to complete his treatment, but he is grateful to all the people in his family, all his friends, local businesses and especially his community for caring about his cause and helping to set up the Logan Cruzade foundation to help others fight T-A.L.L.. Logan’s Cruzade will now become an annual event, whose funds will be used towards helping other families fight cancer. There is no known reason why someone is diagnosed and the Cruz family hopes to help others avoid the tough road their son has faced. Logan hopes to be at the 2nd Annual Logan’s Cruzade tournament, not as the recipient, but as a participant. Hope and prayers and getting by with a little help from their friends, have given this family the strength to get through this rough patch.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+.Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15 from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. Email: rhibshman@bellsouth.net.

THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE

Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults

with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (VR)

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a federal-state agency that helps people with disabilities prepare for, get, or keep a job. VR offers Transition Youth Services, which help students with disabilities train for a job, continue their education, or find a job after high school. Each student will have the opportunity to participate in career counseling, work readiness training, and work experiences in the community. Students will also learn about self-advocacy and achieving independence through employment. For more information, call the Coral Springs VR office at (954) 346-2828 or visit our website at www.rehabworks.org.

It’s A Wrap at Coral Springs K-8 School C

oral Springs Pre-K -8 is having a great school year of growing and learning. We know the students are looking forward to summer break. Although this school year faced many challenges, the missing of 7 school days due to Hurricane Irma and other unforeseen events, Coral Springs Pre-K – 8 remains strong. We have enjoyed several amazing activities this year including: our annual Fall Festival and Spring Fling and several dances to celebrate the ongoing successes of our school. On the academic side, we offered FSA Camp for students in grades 3rd – 8th. We offered a Science Camp, which provided lots of hands on experiences for our Science wizards. We know how rigorous the Florida Standards are for our students, so we offered two Parent University opportunities for the parents. The sessions were during the fall and in the spring. During our Parent University, parents had the opportunity to become students. They were taught by our amazing teachers and interacted with lessons on the Florida Standards. We will end the school year with our upcoming Career Day, and Barnes and Noble Family Night. Both events are great opportunities to involve all of our stakeholders. Furthermore, we are excited to announce that Coral Springs Pre-K – 8 will once again host the Coral Springs Police Department 6 week Summer Camp. This camp was such a huge success last year, and we look forward to working with Coral Spring P.D. again this summer. Finally, we want the learning to continue. Be sure to visit our school’s website over the summer for curriculum activities and the summer reading list. We will also post the 2018 – 2019 suggested school supply list. We wish everyone a happy and safe summer. We Are On The Road To Success!!!

Our team’s experience at the Plywood Regatta competition on April

50

14th and April 15th was out of this world! It started on Saturday morning, 6:00 AM. Our team jumped out of their beds excited for the day to come. After a 40-minute drive, everyone arrived at the Dania Beach pier, where the competition was being held. When our team started walking toward the two-gigantic red and white tents, we were astonished by the amount of people who had already arrived, and we recognized that everyone was excited to begin building their boats! When our team met up, we started to think about plans for our boat. It’s a lot harder than it seems. All we had to begin building a boat was: three thin sheets of plywood, zip-ties, and some thicker pieces of wood. While we were making plans, we had just one problem, not one of us had any idea how to build a boat. Our mentor taught us the basics to building a boat. We were finally on our way. Once

ames S. Hunt Elementary continues to stand #MSD Strong, alongside Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School colleagues and families. Hunt PTO collected and donated over $1000 for MSD families. Our community has given generously, and continues to extend gestures of support in different ways. Hunt students sent messages of love and peace. We posted a “# MSD Strong” message at our school front for all to see, and we are proudly wearing our MSD Strong t-shirts each week. Share the love each day, each month, and each year. Pass it on! we started to get the hang of things, it just took off. First, we started the cutting, next drilling holes and putting zip-ties to hold everything together, then the sealing, and finally the paint. We not only had to build the boat, but the oars as well. The paint job we chose was very interesting and we all loved it. At the end of the day we were sun burnt, tired, and we had paint all over us, but we were excited for the next day to come, the boat races. Many of our members thought that just as long as we could make the boat float, we would have succeeded. Our boat did just a bit more than float, our team came in 2nd place in the semi-final race! Everyone had a blast paddling and cheering on the FGMS Ocean Guardian Sea Slugs! It is an absolutely fantastic competition, a tremendous way to teach students about the Marine Industry, and a great way to encourage teens to get outside. Our team cannot wait to compete next year!

the primary grades, worked hard on various heart projects linking math and literature. They learned about symmetry when creating hearts with equal halves, and were inspired by a beautiful story called “The Shape of My Heart”. Our secondary art students learned about warm and cool colors, and created colorful displays using their hands and watercolor markers. Additionally, Hunt’s fifth grade students learned about Indian elephants and their cultural significance. They watercolor painted them using an array of colors with lines, shapes and patterns. We hope you enjoy a sample of amazing Hunt Artwork!

ORAL SPRINGS, April 20, 2018 – JP Taravella High School Business Ownership students won first place in the International Human Resources Competition, part of the 2018 Virtual Enterprise International Youth Business Summit, held in New York City from April 16 – 18, 2018. Seniors Casey McLallen and Shaina Khemrajsingh, representing their student-run business, TeaTreat Box Co., beat 47 other teen Human Resources representatives from 13 states and 3 countries. Under the direction of their teacher, Laurie Acosta, McLallen and Khemrajsingh are part of Taravella’s 25-person business simulation class in which students start and run a company throughout the year. The 2018 Virtual Enterprise Youth Business Summit brought together thousands of rising young professionals and budding entrepreneurs, educators, school/district administrators, business leaders and industry professionals, from over 40 countries, for a one-of-a-kind global convention. During a dynamic week of business competitions, leadership events, and professional networking, rising talent from middle and high schools around the world displayed the professional skills and business acumen they have developed by running a Virtual Enterprise company during the school year. Taravella’s virtual company, TeaTreat Box Co., is a Fair Trade Organic Tea Subscription Box. McLallen, the firm’s Vice President for Human Resources, said, “When I first started the year, I didn’t really know everything that was involved with Human Resources. Now I know that it involves much more than just handling the relationships between employees.

My position involved creating the employee manual, developing the employee policies, and creating an employee recognition program. I have learned that this is something I really like and may even look into in the future.” BrightStar Credit Union sponsored the group, which helped twelve students and three chaperones from Taravella attend the VEI Youth Business Summit in New York. In addition to the Human Resources competition, students participated in the VEI International Trade Show, where they featured a booth they created, and honed their salesmanship skills. Together, they generated more than $10,000 in “virtual” revenue for the firm by “selling” to other students and trade show attendees. In addition to Taravella, VEI students from Piper and Cooper City High Schools attended the event as well. They are part of a network of more than 500 high schools offering this honors-level program throughout the United States, and nearly 5,000 world-wide. Virtual Enterprises International is an in-school, live, global business simulation that offers students a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning and the development of 21st-century skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem-solving, communication, personal finance and technology. Student firms are connected to one another through an online portal, where they learn how to complete departmental/individual tasks, manage personal and company finances, communicate with other firms, and market their products or services.

Our debate team wrapped up their final debate on April 4th at Attucks Middle School. Congratulations to all the students who participated in debate this year. We look forward to seeing more students get involved with debate next year. Thank you to Mrs. Lori Wyner for sponsoring the club this year. The Hawk’s Engineering Team, sponsored by Mrs. Angela Gibson, had 30 students competing in the SECME STEM OLYMPIAD, on April 14, at Dillard High School. The SECME STEM Olympiad program in Broward Schools is a strategic alliance to renew and strengthen the professional capacity of K-12 educators, motivate and mentor students, and empower parents so that all students can learn and achieve at higher levels. STEM is a nationwide initiative which focuses on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The SECME–STEM Olympiad combines these two philosophies

The life blood of our local sports programs are the volunteer coaches, the men and women who donate their time. These are the heroes of this community. Without them, none of these sports programs would be possible. In my role as a Parkland City Commissioner, parents often ask me how they can get involved in the community. decision that many parents have to make for their children is when to start them in sports and group settings. Some of us are very hesitant about putting our children into group settings because of their age. Youth sports are always the easiest route to go because they can be fun as well as broad in the sense of what your child is getting out of it. Kids are exposed to learning to take directions quickly, discipline, repeating patterns and actions, coordination and motor learning, teamwork, building camaraderie, self-confidence and belief within the child itself. At APT and APTKids, we work with children of all levels and ages. From our personal experience, the sharper and more developed children are usually the ones who have begun sports or group activities at a younger age. As with anything in life, when you are able to execute an objective, a drill, reach a goal or even score a goal, the child becomes more confident with him/ herself and feels a sense of joy and excitement. They want to repeat this success, and that’s when your child will really begin to excel. There will always be that time in sports or learning where the child will reach a plateau, and that can be frustrating for your child. As a parent or coach, we see these obstacles and have to help the child get through that adversity. Once the child gets through those obstacles the next road block or plateau is much easier for them to handle

and get through quicker. Sports and group settings allow the child to build the important development skills to handle and grow from these events both in a game and everyday life. In this day and age everything is about getting things done quickly, with no repetition or efficiency involved. That mindset is hurting our kids. Children are becoming less active and less resourceful with every passing year. Perhaps a child had a tough time at practice so he quit. Our job as parents and coaches is to steer the child in the right direction and build a strong and determined mindset. It will always be mind over matter at the end of the day. Children need to be better prepared for everyday life which means a lot of hard work and over coming obstacles. These key skills will give them the best opportunity to maximize their potential and future. APT Kids has received over $20,000 of sports equipment and gear from the MLS (Major League Soccer) to help our community learn through sports. This is the first donation that the new Non-Profit has received and we are hoping we receive many more to help our APT Kids Family. We will be at various events this summer giving back to the community as well as setting up activities and sports programs across the area! Come enjoy the best sports camp in South Florida.
