Dear Parkland Residents,

Earlier this spring, we came together to honor Parkland’s historic past, enjoy festive traditions, and celebrate the City’s 60th birthday with old and new friends.

As I look back over the past eight months, I see a close-knit community. I also see a thriving City with much more on the horizon.

Our newly acquired Heron Bay Parkland property reflects the ethos of our community and strong economy. We are steps away from a monumental infrastructural redesign of Loxahatchee Road. Large-scale drainage improvements are taking place in a few key areas in the City. And we will soon begin work on the new Wedge Preserve Park. All of these projects and improvements will positively impact our life experiences for years to come. As Mayor and as a Parkland resident, I am grateful for the strength of our relationships and partnerships, and I am inspired by the work that has been done to usher in our future.

There is much to say about where we are headed as a community, and I believe an exciting report like this should be shared in person. The Commissioners and I will deliver the State of the City at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. on May 10, at 6600 University Drive, 33067. Should anything change, we will be sure to keep everyone up to date on the details.

During our State of the City, the City Commission will share a high-level overview of the many initiatives that are completed, in process, and scheduled to begin throughout the Wedge. I think the presentation, which will include visual references and opportunities to speak with City commissioners in an informal setting, will give residents a better understanding of the scope of the projects going on in our community.

Through the years, our successes have firmly planted us where we are today, and we want to continue to embrace what is sure to be a dynamic future for the City of Parkland. Consider making plans to hear more about our next chapter together.

I look forward to seeing you there.

If you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@Cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website Cityofparkland. org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.

Your Parkland Mayor, Rich Walker

Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,

This year our City is celebrating its 60th Birthday! We are having events throughout the year, and we’re having a huge party for July 4! For all of our events, including dates for Bites and Sips, please look at our website, www.CoralSprings.org/events.

We recently opened the long-awaited Splash Pad at Betti Stradling Park!

If you haven’t visited yet, take your kids and cool down this Summer. This Summer, I will be hosting at least five young people to shadow me as the Mayor and tour City Hall and learn about YOUR government. If you are interested, please email me at Sbrook@Coralsprings.gov.

Aside from my role as Mayor, I have led a Teen Leadership program with other high school students for 20 years. The program is called Project Leadership. I and many volunteers have hosted 45 free programs to teach Leadership, Finances, Conflict Resolution and many other topics since 2003. If you would like more information, kindly call or text me at (954) 494-9872.

This year our City is also celebrating our 20th year of Public Art! We started the program when I was a commissioner in 2003 and it’s added a lot of culture to our Community. Speaking of art, if you haven’t visited our Museum, you must go! The exhibits are always unique and the actual space that our pieces are held in is open, beautiful and inspiring. I hope that you and your children have had a good school year. Have an awesome summer! If you need to make an appointment to see me during my office hours, please call Luwam Ghermay at (954) 344-5906. You can follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at CSCommissioner1.

Your Friendly Mayor,

As we approach the presidential elections once again, we find ourselves bombarded with pessimism, toxicity, and misinformation from various media outlets. As investors, our immediate reactions to sudden market volatility can do more harm than good. Therefore, it is crucial to respond thoughtfully and deliberately to these situations, rather than react impulsively.

Long-Term Focus: Investors who are influenced by short-term market moves can get caught up in the volatility of the market. On the other hand, those who focus on the long term are not as affected because they are looking beyond the short-term ups and downs. Therefore, it is essential to take the longer view, which encourages more thoughtful and deliberate financial decisions.

The investment company Invesco found that “over the past 120 years, the long-term performance of the market has shown almost no correlation with government policies.”

Tip #1: One tip for investing during politically volatile times is to focus on the most likely outcome, rather than the worst-case scenario. For instance, in the last two presidential elections, some investors wanted to sell all their stocks because they feared the market would crash under a Democratic or Republican President. A case in point may be found in the last 2 elections. In 2020 when Biden was elected, some investors wanted to sell all their stocks because they feared that markets would fall under a Democratic President. But 2020 and 2021 turned out

to be a significant move up in the market, which still holds. Similarly, in 2016, some investors sold their stocks because they believed stocks would crash when Trump was President, but investors who stayed in cash after the election missed out on gains over the next 4 years.

Tip #2: Another helpful tip is to focus on what we know now rather than predicting the future. It is vital to remember that we are investing for long-term goals, which do not necessarily coincide with the election cycle. Over the long term, investors have done better by staying invested through political changes rather than investing only during their preferred party’s regime.

Tip #3: Lastly, try not to make extreme changes to your investments during politically volatile times. It is better to make small changes rather than extreme moves all in or out of stocks. If you decide to sell some of your stock allocation, limit it to a small part of your portfolio. This means that you might miss out on gains if the market moves higher, but if it helps you avoid selling out of stocks entirely later, then it is worth doing.

In conclusion, it always pays to resist pessimism and remain positive, especially during politically volatile times. We should focus on the most likely outcome, rely on what we know and avoid making extreme changes to our investments.

As an investor, it is crucial to take the longer view and make more thoughtful and deliberate financial decisions. If we keep these principles in mind, we can come out of market volatility our well thought-out long-term financial plan intact. Be well and invest wisely.

HELPING CHILDREN BUILD POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM

As parents, educators and adults, we aim for children to grow up feeling confident and capable of handling life’s problems. How do we give them the tools needed to be confident and successful? One way is through teaching children how to build their sense of self-esteem. Having positive self-esteem is extremely important to mental health development as self-esteem impacts the choices and decisions children make, the type of relationships we have, and the way we feel and think about ourselves. Research has shown lower sense of self-esteem is directly liked to mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and an increase in trauma symptoms (if trauma has occurred). Individuals with low self-esteem are more likely to criticize themselves, have more negative thoughts, have difficulty recognizing positive qualities, taking compliments, striving to reach goals and gain success, and have difficulty within relationships.

Self-esteem is the extent that a person believes they are capable, significant, successful, and worthy. It is made up several different pieces that fit together to form a bigger picture. Building positive self-esteem might seem like an abstract concept, but there are small steps you, as a parent, can use to teach your child how to believe in themselves, be successful, and tackle any situation with capability.

• Self-Worth: being worthy of respect, being loved or valued. Consistently tell and show your child through action they are loved and they are important. Talking about boundaries and showing them, they are respected is an important piece as well; allowing your child to have a voice and a say. Allowing your child to assert themselves to say no to hugs or touch from others can be an example of this. Taking with them about their opinions, needs, and wants and taking all of it into consideration. Make them feel important with a say in their life. Teach your child that everyone has equal worth and value.

• Self Confidence: feeling of security. Create a space at home where your child

can feel safe to express themselves, to be who they are, and feel protected, cared for and not judged. Having a home with physical stability, structure, consequences, rewards with consistency all will be helpful with creating external security. Internal security can be assisted with telling your child what their strengths and qualities are. This can be shown through modeling confidence and positive self-talk out loud in front of your child. “Oh I love the way I look in this dress” and “even though this task is hard, I know I can do it if I keep trying”.

• Competence/Efficacy: feeling successful; motivation to enter new challenges. Lead by example, and try new activities with your child, be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Share positive thoughts out loud with your child, modeling how to talk through a challenge or work through frustration or emotions that arise from a challenge. Provide excitement and positive discussions around trying new things including food, activities, sports, subjects. Allowing your child to pick new activities to try and allow them the opportunity to independently learn, with parental support if needed. For little ones, for example, if they want to feed themselves, pour their own drink, allow them to try, be there for support, and assist only if needed. It might take more time and patience at first, but eventually they will master the skill, feel competent, and learn they can do it.

• Belonging: feeling a part of something. Having a sense of purpose in their family, home life, school, sport, religious affiliation can build a sense of belonging. Teach them their presence is important and valued by including them. For example, if you are cleaning, give your child a task no matter how big or small, and praise them for the effort in helping. If your child is in sports, tell them they are a valued member of that team, whether it’s cheering their teammates from the sidelines, scoring, or helping a teammate score. Coral Springs & Parkland Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 36 | MayMid August 2023 41 FAMILY HEALTH

If you are going through a divorce, Paternity matter or post-judgment matter, like a Motion for Contempt, there are several things you should be aware of. Please allow me to share a few ideas to make this difficult process less painful and possibly help you achieve your objectives.

Can you WIN your case? Of course you can. However, it’s important to know that for every winner there is at least one loser. Don’t get me wrong, I love to win at trial. IT feels great. HOWEVER, consider the cost of the win. That includes legal fees, your time, your energy and more. One thing that most parents who litigate don’t focus enough on is the impact on their children. It is extraordinarily difficult, of course, if your ex is a narcissist or is determined to battle you. Either way, you must protect your child. Here are a few tools in the toolbox.

You can seek a Guardian Ad Litem or an Attorney Ad Litem to be a voice for your child. They are not inexpensive. If your ex’s mental health is at issue, you can seek a Psychological Evaluation or Social Investigation.

Another thing that most litigants in family law matters often are not aware of is the ability to have your ex pay your fees. If you earn substantially less than your spouse or ex-spouse or the other parent (in a paternity case), you might be able to recover or obtain Attorney’s fees in advance based on your need and his/her ability to pay. The sooner you seek temporary fees in a pleading, the sooner the Judge can have the hearing and potentially award your fees and costs.

If you are litigating in Miami-Dade or Broward Counties, you should be prepared for delays as these Courts are packed. IN order to streamline things, your matter may be referred to a General Magistrate. You have a right to object to those referrals. It is rare that an attorney will offer you a flat fee for a litigated matter as there are too many variables. Will the other side cooperate? If your

ex doesn’t cooperate, will the Judge award sanctions? Judges may be ill and unable to appear for a scheduled hearing date. In Broward, unfortunately, we lost a Judge due to her unfortunate passing and her division is still scrambling to accommodate parties and their attorneys.

Many people going through the Family Courts want it over “YESTERDAY.” However, keep in mind that typically the only way to do that is to say yes to everything your ex is seeking and have an uncontested divorce. IT is essential to be patient and strategic. PATIENCE is a virtue! Of course, it is human to be emotional. However, live within your emotional means. Know when to say “no.” Allow yourself to grieve if that is how you feel. Allow yourself to be angry if that is how you feel. If you remain too emotional to make wise decisions, seek help. I have advised many clients that while I can be an okay “ventee,” I am expensive relative to a mental health counselor. It is MORE THAN OKAY TO SEEK HELP. Expect your ex to attempt to get under your skin. If he/she doesn’t, then that is a bonus. Don’t be reactive. Stay strategic. You will hear and read things from your ex or the opposing counsel that will upset you. Breathe through it and then choose an appropriate response that is in alignment with your strategy. You don’t have to let them see you sweat.

My last piece of wisdom for this article is to LIVE YOUR LIFE. Don’t let the litigation become your life. Take out your family law file when it’s time to gather records, meet with your attorney or prepare for hearing. When that time is over, please put that file away and take care of you. Take care of your family. Do things you enjoy. You may have less resources, but there are many healthy options, including walking and meditation, that are free.

My team and I love what we do and helping families create new possibilities for a more peaceful future. Please email me at Scott@scottjbrookpa.com or call us at 954-757-5551. Mention this article, you will receive 20% off your Initial Consultation.

Makers! Camp is a summer camp and a jampacked mini music education all in one! Since 1998, Coral Springs resident and Camp founder, Nicole Greggs, has been bringing music education and summer fun to K - 8 students in partnership with the City of Coral Springs. On a typical camp day, students have daily breakout sessions to learn the basics or fine-tune their skills on string instruments, recorder, percussion, and keyboard. The camp comes together for a daily singing session led by Ms. Nicole, who is also an accomplished elementary school music teacher. Keeping in the traditions of summer camp, the campers come together every afternoon for games, arts & crafts, and end each session with a showcase of their musical accomplishments in Finale Concert. The camp offers two themed sessions per summer. Campers perform in all instructed instrumental areas, as well as sing with choreography and costumes. Campers who return year after year are exposed to a wide variety of music from different eras, regions, and genres.

MusicMakers! Camp has been housed at Coral Springs Charter School for the past 11 years. Camp is open to students who have finished Kindergarten through 8th grade. Many campers come back as volunteer counselors! Students entering 9th through 12th grade can earn service hours as volunteer counselors. This camp is a perfect home for your high school musician to share their existing musical talents or learn a new skill! Many counselors were former campers including our longtime percussion instructor, Delisa Rufus. Delisa is a MusicMakers! Camp success story who began as a campers continued as a counselor and is now our beloved percussion instructor! Each summer they give back to our community through the Donice Rufus Memorial Scholarship Fund and concert door donations to staff-selected charities. MusicMakers! Summer Camp strives to develop musicianship, character, and respect for others within a safe environment, while promoting a deep understanding of music’s value. In the past, we have contributed to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the Donice Rufus Memorial Scholarship Fund, Coral Springs High School Steven Hoyos Memorial Band Fund, Wounded Warrior Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Broward County Humane Society, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Project Semicolon, Surfside Relief Fund, and Maya’s Hope… with over $7,000 in good will contributions. MusicMakers! is a nonprofit organization that provides fun, educational summer music programs & awards service hours to high school volunteers and was the Amazon Small Business Grants 2022 Grand Prize Winner!

The Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation, a 501(c) (3) Florida not-for-profit corporation, has announced plans to build and maintain the official public Memorial to honor the 17 who were taken too soon, five years ago, in the February 14, 2018 massacre. Fundraising is now underway for the Memorial, which will be located within a large quiet, serene preserve currently being constructed. The Parkland 17 Memorial will be open to the public to provide a place to remember and reflect on those who were taken from their families and our community. The victims’ families are steadfast in their desire to have a public Memorial built to honor their lost loved ones: Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque Anguiano, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon ,Luke Hoyer ,Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack ,Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, & Peter Wang.

Tony Montalto, father of Gina Montalto, is Vice Chairman of the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation and the family liaison who keeps the other victims’ families updated. They are advised of the steps in the process and have direct input regarding creation of the Memorial. “This foundation was established to build the official public memorial to the victims of the Parkland massacre to ensure they are forever remembered as the people they were, as innocent children with vibrant, bright futures ahead of them – educators and coaches who gave so much of themselves to their students,” Montalto said.

The Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation Board A multi-year effort led to the creation of the nonprofit, 501(c)(3) Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation. Representatives of the families of the deceased, residents and government officials of both Parkland

and Coral Springs, who were appointed or requested, sit on the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation Board. Dedicated individuals have also volunteered to serve on the board in the following capacities: in addition to Montalto, other members include Chair Michael Moser, First Responder Representative; Secretary Joy Carter, Coral Springs Commission Representative; Treasurer Rich Walker, Parkland Mayor and Commission Representative; Alice Zendel Simon, Director and Coral Springs Resident Representative; Director and Parkland Resident Representative Theresa Brier; and Bonnie Barnett, Director and At Large Representative. “We anticipate that kind and compassionate donors will find it in their hearts to donate to this Memorial to forever remember these beautiful souls murdered on February 14, 2018, tragically taken from their families, friends and the world much too soon,” Moser said.

The Foundation has oversight of the project. Proposals for the design of the Memorial will be reviewed by the victims’ families and evaluated by the Foundation’s board. The public will have an opportunity to provide input through the Foundation’s website as well as through community representatives on the Foundation’s board. A national call to artists will be issued in early 2023. Funding Corporations, businesses, foundations and the public can make tax exempt donations to the Memorial at www. Parkland17.org. Vendors who donate or discount their services will be given high priority. The public can donate and help bring awareness to the Memorial. Information will be available on the website announcing the formation of subcommittees and requests for volunteers. Follow @Parkland_17 on Twitter and Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation on Facebook.

Spring has sprung for Park Trails Elementary, and with that brings us closer to the end of the year. We will soon be graduating our 2022-2023 Kindergarten class and sending off our 5th graders to middle school. Before that moment arrives, we still have many exciting things happening here at PTE for both our current and aspiring PTE families.

On Thursday, April 20th, PTE celebrated Autism Awareness Month with all day activities surrounding a fun walk. On Thursday, April 27th, PTE hosted their Kindergarten Round-Up and New Student Meet-and-Greet.

Come see all the exciting things that PTE can offer

you and your child in this upcoming school year. We are excited to show off our STEAM program, share our upcoming media renovations, and take you on a tour of the day in a life of a PTE student.

Finally, on May 18th, PTE will be celebrating our annual Multicultural Night. We encourage you to come out and support all of the various ethnicities that make up our Park Trails Family and enjoy the festivities of the night.

For more information about registering for our school, please call 754-322-7800. Park Trails is located at 10700 Trails End Parkland. Their principal is Arlene Manville.

The 4th quarter is here! That means Summer Break is right around the corner. For the past couple of months, the Ram Family have been very busy participating in various activities. In March, our PTO coordinated the Bubble Run event at Sherwood Park located in Coral Springs. Students, staff and parents had a great time running through the designated path and eating great food. Our Scholastic Book Fair was also a tremendous success. Families and staff purchased a tremendous number of books. The 5th graders went to Islands of Adventure in Orlando for the end of the year field trip. They had an amazing experience. After Spring Break, our students returned to school ready to receive rigorous and enriching instruction in all subject areas, as they prepare for upcoming assessments.

In April, our calendar was full of events. Several grade levels were exposed to field trip experiences. The 4th graders went to Kennedy Space Center in Orlando. The 3rd graders went to iFly in Davie. The 1st grade team hosted the High Touch High Tech company for an in-house field trip. Our Debate team successfully competed at Taravella High School. Two of our students medaled in the competition.

We can’t wait to share end of the year activities and our school grade in the next article. Have a fantastic Summer!

Have you heard our wildcats ROAR this school year?! Their ROAR has been packed with passion, growth, a love of learning, respect, and responsibility. It’s a great time to be a wildcat. This school year has seen a stronger student culture, a focus on meeting goals, exploring new technology ventures, and all while ensuring social emotional learning is taking place. Wildcats pride themselves on making strides and securing progress!

Have you seen the improvements to our single point of entry, Wildcat café, and campus? We’re making improvements to ensure our students feel comfortable where they learn and take pride in being a wildcat. Rick Pitino once said, “Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer” and FGMS has a lot to offer! Being a part of the Coral Springs community means a lot to us at FGMS and we want to ensure we serve our students and families well. We have the best educators, course selections, and programs. We are a Verizon Innovative Learning School which allows us to provide iPads with free Verizon data to all students and teachers of FGMS. This has helped to create access to learning beyond our classrooms and campus. Learning can happen anywhere! What programs does the Glen have to offer? A debate program that takes

public speaking to another level! An athletics program that places emphasis on the “student” first as a student athlete. The innovative Jobs for Florida Graduates (JFG) program which spends time investing in our students’ futures by providing several opportunities to learn about various career choices. The district’s Read 180 program that has helped our wildcats increase their comprehension and fluency skills. A math curriculum and program that not only aims to prepares students’ basic foundational needs, but also strives to bring math to life through real-world application. A chorus and band program that go beyond the confines of FGMS’ hallways to introduce students to a world of fine arts. A mentoring program that aims to leave no student left behind. A Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (MTL) program that molds wildcats into future leaders. A gardening and art program that occasionally combine to truly tap into the depths of a student’s being. Student and staff life on campus is a top tier experience! Forest Glen Middle School is reaching new heights of excellence and we invite interested students and families to tour our campus at 6501 Turtle Run Boulevard in Coral Springs. We can be reached at 754-322-3400. If you want a sneak peak into all the happenings at FGMS, follow us on Twitter @GlenPrincipal.

As we end what has been a remarkable school year, Coral Park has much to celebrate. We come together as a school community and celebrate the learning and growth of students. Aside from the academic gains our students have made, our students have shown tremendous leadership growth. We have

• had winners of medals in our Debate Club,

• had over 90 students who mentored other students as “Play Pals”,

• students who provided morning news each and every day as the CPE Morning News Crew.

• students who each day assist students with a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal as our safety patrols.

This year, however, is a bittersweet ending to the school year. Coral Park has been blessed with an art teacher, Mrs. Donna Casanas, who has served the Coral Park school community for over 32 years as our art teacher. She has instilled a passion for art in our students (and even has had some of their parents as

students, too!). Mrs. Casanas will be retiring at the end of this school year after 41 years of teaching. When you walk the “halls” of Coral Park, you will several murals that she created with our students over the years. These murals symbolize the “art” mark Mrs. Casanas has made on Coral Park. Coral Park will miss her tremendously but wishes her the best as she enjoys her much earned retirement.

As we close the school year, we are simultaneously planning an amazing “STEAMy” Summer Camp program that that starts Monday, June 12th. Please contact Kelly Lentoski at (754)322-5850 or email cpe_steamy_camp@ browardschools.com for more information. We will be open for registrations for the 2023-24 school year throughout the summer on Monday through Thursdays from 8:00AM-3:00PM.
