Dear Readers, WELCOME BACK to your Sports & Activities Directory! I hope that everyone enjoyed a fun-filled summer and was able to spend quality time with family and friends and recharge before the start of this very important school year. We’ve missed you and the community involvement during the pandemic. Now that sports, activities, events and schools are happening again...the Sports & Activities Directory team is off the bench and back in the game! I’m sure you are wondering what is open, what’s happening and what new and exciting things are being offered for your family? We’re on it! This issue focuses on Back to School and Fall/Winter programs, sports, and special events, as well as just about everything you need to know to get out and about again. Some of our very favorite activities and events are back and we could not be more excited! Be sure to check out our detailed event calendar for all the happenings. If you have not already signed your child up to participate in fall sports activities, now is the time. Please encourage your children to look through the magazine and choose one extracurricular activity or more that might interest them. This will help your child find a good balance between studying, activities and sports. These skills can help teach your child time management and leadership skills, as well as how to establish goals and develop a good work ethic. Looking to volunteer? Become a Broward County Public Schools volunteer and make an impact on the lives of so many children. We encourage all parents to join their school’s PTA or PTO. These organizations are more important than ever and give parents the opportunity to remain involved with their children, know what is going on at their schools, and have your voice heard. Special thanks to my strong and devoted Sports & Activities team, we are all in this together to bring you the most valued, fun and informative publications for your families. We thank you for waiting patiently for us to get this issue in your hands again. We thank and are so grateful to our cherished advertisers for their continued business and loyalty. We thank our cities and schools for their ongoing support. We can’t do what we do without all of you! I wish you and your children a safe, successful and fun school year ahead. We can’t wait to see you out on the field enjoying the sports and activities that you love! My best to you,

Kim Kadel Publisher

Dear Readers,

8

When I sat with my family and discussed the idea of running for Mayor more than a year ago, one of the things we agreed on was, if I became Mayor, I would always keep learning. Now as Mayor, one of the many things I have learned is everyone is concerned about things that affect them in specific ways. Children are in the throes of returning to school for what we hope will be a year that fits our definition of ‘normal’ more than last year, and parents are concerned about safety. Will my son have to wear a face mask, will my daughter remember to use hand sanitizer, are teachers going to take care of my child? All understandable concerns. As a parent, I worry about the same things you do. But my concern is tempered because I have seen up close how committed our teachers and principals are to not only teaching our children as effectively as possible, but to ensuring their safety. I cannot thank our teachers, administrators, and staff enough. Parkland is so lucky to have a plethora of dedicated educators committed to teaching our children and helping them grow not only as students, but as the future of our community. As Mayor, however, I do not have the luxury of worrying about just one thing. I hear from residents who are concerned about home values, others are concerned about athletic field safety, some want more services, and others worry about the millage rate. It all concerns me because I know each of these matters are of concern to some of our residents. It may seem like a lot, but I’m frequently reminded of that conversation with my family. One of the words that was repeated over and over was ‘service.’ My family loves Parkland. That is why my wife and I moved here, decided to raise our children here, and why our kids want to stay here. So when I had the opportunity to serve the City we love, my family helped me decide that it was the right thing to do. None of the worrying, none of the concerns have swayed me from that decision. As we enter September, this month highlights two high holidays within the Jewish faith, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Happy New year and G’Mar Tov to the many members of our community who honor and celebrate these occasions. On a reflective note, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001. It is still difficult to believe that 2,977 people were killed [according to encyclopedia Britannica] with many thousands more injured and suffering longterm side effects to this day. These represent not only the worst terrorist attack in world history, but also the deadliest incident ever for firefighters and law enforcement officers in our nation’s history. I’m reminded of the powerful way our country unified in the aftermath. There is perhaps no greater example in modern American history that more clearly demonstrates that core thread of how much we can accomplish once we set aside our differences, embrace what we have in common, and put our minds to progress. As always I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to speak with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon you prefer so you can follow us to stay informed on events and helpful information. Your Parkland Mayor,

Rich Walker

It is such a pleasure to be your Mayor! I appreciate the request of this valuable publication for a personal article to you all. I am proud to have as much Unity in our Community as we have displayed since our Emergency Order last March when the Pandemic first affected our community. During this time, we experienced peaceful protests, great compliance with new safety protocols and a balanced approach that allowed the vast majority of our businesses to continue to exist while very few were forced to close during the pandemic.

Here are some other highlights:

• We activated a team, Food for the Soul, to develop food supply and distribution for our most vulnerable and economically impacted residents. We hosted seven food distribution events and served more than 5,000 families in our local community with food donations. • We hosted monthly blood drives with wellness checkup & COVID-19 antibody testing for donors and plasma donation opportunities to assist those trying to recover from COVID-19. • The city provided a Rental Assistance Program, which assisted 31 families and distributed $130,000 for three-months of rental assistance. In addition, the city received $502,000 in CARES Act funding to be distributed to qualifying families for rental assistance and an additional $730k in CBDG grant funding to help families. • In partnership with the Coral Springs Community Chest, we promoted the Give Where You Live campaign, to raise funds for financial assistance for residents in need. To date the program has raised more than $25,000, which includes $10,000 from city employees. • City staff worked to provide local businesses with support and resources. This included the Coral Springs Back in Business Grant Program; and Connecting Local Businesses to Grants and Loans Program, where our staff assisted businesses in Coral Springs with obtaining $1.4 million in grants. We also implemented the Economic Recovery Task Force to better understand all areas of commerce and their concerns during the pandemic. I loved coaching my grandson, Aiden and his team in the amazing Coral Springs Youth Soccer program with my friend and Athletic Director, David Phelps as it was the first major outdoor activity for our community during Covid. I want to thank everyone who helped our children have a sense of normalcy during these challenging times. I host office hours on most Fridays and can be reached personally on my cell phone at 954-494-9872. You can schedule an appointment by calling Luwam at 954-344-5911. You can also email me at Sbrook@coralsprings.org. Lastly, please follow me on social media at CSCommissioner 1 (on Facebook and Instagram, as I am hardly ever on Twitter). May your school year get off to a good start! I am available for Mayor Shadowing on most Fridays too for any youth that would like to learn more about local government. With Gratitude, Your Friendly Mayor,

Scott J. Brook

roject Leadership is a one of a kind community organization that engages connections between our youth and adult mentors. The program was founded by Scott J. Brook, the Mayor of the city of Coral Springs and a dedicated family lawyer, in 2009. The Program is put on by PNA Foundation. Project Leadership is essentially run by youth for the youth. Our program has provided a unique and safe space for high school and middle school students to share their opinions, host discussions and participate in community events, that they lead! Typically, the program occurs over two or three evenings from 6-8 pm and free dinner is provided. High School students can earn service hours for their participation and attendance. The program is free, and our next program is underway now. Our mission is to educate youth by instilling in them life, leadership, and public-speaking skills. We help our teens create their own “blueprint” for life after high school. Most importantly, our vision is to support our youth in finding their own voices, help them to build healthy relationships, and to overcome adversity with a clear purpose in life and the correct guidance. Project Leadership is free and typically will host up to 40 students. We believe this program is a great opportunity for students to overcome their fear of public speaking,

learn about the importance of networking and truly get engaged with our community. We give our youth a stronger foundation for their future through mentorship from various community leaders and providing a fun place to learn from one another. This program is also an amazing way to embrace your true self, grow genuine connections through networking, earn service hours and to of course have fun! Project Leadership has hosted several socials from Cherry Smash to Zona Fresca, holds holiday celebrations and supports students through occasional scholarships and sponsors. Since the pandemic/ COVID, the organization holds hybrid meetings to accommodate in person and virtual attendance. Our current teen leaders, Elizabeth Polion, Jazmin Martin and Khushi Desai, along with Mr. Scott J Brook, Ms. Judy Kissel, Mr. David Pollack and other community leaders are committed to lead Project Leadership 41 with passion and compassion! We encourage all teens to join the planning committee!! To learn more about Project Leadership please visit www.PNANetwork.org or email Elizabeth Polion at Elizabeth@scottjbrookpa.com. AROUND TOWN Throughout the year, our ongoing Chamber programming By Ellis Mass gives us even more opportunities to deepen our connections with Parkland-area students. A perennial favorite event is our networking night with MSD’s outstanding DECA chapter – both students and our lifelong learners in the Chamber benefit greatly from the connections. Many of our member businesses are able to sign up eager DECA students as summer interns. We also serve as guest judges when the MSD DECA students are preparing for State and International competition, helping them hone their insights with our real-world experience. (On more than one occasion, I’ve been proud to play the role of “Shark” at MSD DECA’s “Shark Tank” competition – an MSD tradition begun several years ago.) We have also been proud to offer college scholarships to the most outstanding DECA students for the past several years – narrowing it down to one or two is often quite a challenge, given the caliber of these students. But the educational opportunities for members don’t end there. The Chamber hosts educational events geared towards businesses throughout the year. Over the past year alone, we have provided our members with workshops on navigating the complex process of federal PPP Loans, and taught our members how to “Amplify Their Networking In The New Normal”, just to name a couple. We’ve had university educators and subject matter experts share their expertise on topics ranging from corporate culture to inspirational leadership to cyber-security. So if you’re a business owner or leader in Parkland, and you’re still on the fence about whether to join the Chamber, let your intellectual curiosity break the logjam. Don’t let the growing moss slow your stone from rolling rapidly! As the great Michelangelo reportedly said (at age 87): “I’m still learning!” With the outstanding educational resources from the Chamber, we can continuously sharpen our skills. So even as we are now getting “back to business”, as leaders, let us also return back to school! Ellis Mass is the owner of FocalPoint Business Coaching, and serves as Secretary on the Executive Board of the Parkland Chamber of Commerce.

ike many Parkland Chamber of Commerce members, I joined the Chamber for a variety of reasons. The number one reason business owners give for joining, of course, is “networking opportunities.” And while it is quite true that the Chamber affords its members ample opportunities to build our networks, I take great pride in a couple of the other benefits of the Chamber. First, I look at the Parkland Chamber as an extension of the Parkland community that I have love. I live and work in Parkland, and I view my service with the Chamber as a way to give back to the community. And second, I find that the Parkland Chamber shares my deep commitment to education, both formal and informal. That commitment is more apparent this time of year than any other. Back-To-School time, as it turns out, isn’t just for kids. As entrepreneurs and executives, many of us use the school summer recess as an opportunity to take family vacations, to reduce our hours or coverage, or just to be a little less formal in the oppressive summer heat. But now, just as our kids are thinking about backpacks, spiral notebooks, and first-day outfits, we are scrambling to book those meetings we had been putting off during the dog days, re-engaging with our networks after time apart, and gearing up our businesses for a post-Labor Day resurgence in activity. Earlier this month, the Parkland Chamber hosted what has become an annual Parkland tradition: our local “Back To School” Panel Discussion. With none other than our own esteemed Mayor Rich Walker (himself a Chamber member) giving the welcoming address, this year’s event in the Stoneman Douglas media center had an unprecedented level of educational star power! In addition to our usual panel of Parkland-area school principals (from Heron Heights, Park Trails, Riverglades, Stoneman Douglas, Westglades, and Somerset Parkland Academy), we were joined by our area’s Broward County School Board Representative, Lori Alhadeff. Moreover, we had the opportunity to welcome newly-named interim BCPS Superintendent, Dr. Vickie Cartwright! This was quite a coup for our community – dozens of business owners and engaged parents got to hear directly from these leaders what the coming year has in store for our students.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. Email: rhibshman@bellsouth.net.

A YEAR OF CHANGE W

t

By Dr. David Yudell, Licensed Psychologis

hoa. It has been a long year of change. Let us start by all taking in a deep breath (mask is recommended). Now exhale. I realize how real (and possibly painful) the events of 2020 were for all of us. However, I am optimistic by nature. As such I am looking forward to a school year that resembles past expectations. Support, enrichment and socialization for our children. To say the world has changed is an understatement. I encourage those I work with to focus less on global events and more on yourself and your family. My aim for this article is to offer some direction as school starts for what will unmistakably be a year of change. Respect. Simply put, there are many opinions that circulate through the residents of South Florida. If New York was known as the melting pot by previous generations, South Florida seems to meet that description today. As a psychologist I have learned to straddle the fence. I clearly have my own opinion, however I would be less than effective if I was not able to understand the opinions of my patients. A central tenet in parenting should be to be respectful of others. Not just elders and teachers but of our children’s peers and their families, most notably when their views dissent from ours. This year, during this climate, is the perfect time to teach this lesson and live by example. Emotional Impact. This area will be the most difficult to measure as well as the most important to rectify. The social isolation that occurred while we were learning how to and then protecting our families from the pandemic will be dissected for years. How do you identify damage done by increased technology use, decreased education and halted socialization on children? The answers will be studied and debated. For now keep an eye on your children and recreate normal activity. If they seem sad, withdrawn, angry, distracted or show behavior that is concerning in any way, start by

consulting with your pediatrician. They can guide you through what can be expected versus what could be a sign of the need for psychological help. Loss and Catch Up. We will be seeing the impact of COVID on education and socialization for some time. You can take solace in knowing that it was a global pandemic but that only helps with accepting the loss. The goal now should be to regroup and refocus. Use the start of this year as a way to get your child to focus on several aspects of school that will make him or her successful. From note taking, to using a schedule or dry erase board to plan for assignments and tests, to reaching out to teachers and other students for collaboration. Use this as an opportunity to teach them the skill of asking for help. Get them involved in sports and enriching activities that they missed out on. There are ways to measure their abilities through either their school or through trained psychologists. The first part of the school year is a perfect time for assessment of their abilities. Get involved in their academics and get to know your child as they navigate through this year. The best step to take at this point is to observe (how they are dealing with their academics, social and emotional functioning), intervene (provide support and help to the best of your ability) and ask for help (teachers, tutors, appropriate health care professionals) when you are concerned or unsure of the next step. Be optimistic about school, model the behaviors you want from your children, and work hard to support them throughout the year. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

he Raider Nation is very excited to welcome back our students face-to-face after a challenging yet successful year of hybrid learning. Despite the difficulties that came with hybrid learning the Raider Nation was able to successfully compete in Drama, Debate, Band, and Athletic competitions and shine. This is a true testament to the dedication of the students, athletes, parents, and the whole Raider Nation. Last year our athletes really stepped up and competed at the highest levels. Our boys’ basketball team competed in the County Championship and placed 2nd overall. A group of 8th grade students represented Ramblewood Track and Field by competing at the County level in long jump, high jump and hurdles and all placing. We also had 6 students who earned All-State Honors in Band and 4 students for All-State Chorus as well. The Bullseye Club Ramblewood Debate won over 40 medals at competition and placed in the top three in three different events in the County Championship for speech and debate. The Drama Department was able to think out of the box and present a virtual performance of “The Great Divide! A Very Crunchy Musical!! Along with bringing home 10 Superiors, 7 Excellences, and a Superior and State Selected One Act! As we look forward to this coming school year please be on the lookout for Open

House which will take place on August 31st, 2021 at 6:30 PM. Parents and students will have an opportunity to visit the school, find their classrooms, and meet their teachers. Our teachers and staff are excited to welcome our newest Raiders, our incoming 6th graders, and all our returning Raiders! The theme this year for the Raider Nation is MISSION: IM’POSSIBLE where our students will be able to set and achieve their goals. The Raider Nation will be implementing Social and Emotional Learning school wide and look forward to building a strong foundation with our students and staff. As part of our new School Wide Behavior Plan and Incentives Ramblewood Middle will have Raider PRIDE (Be Prepared, Be Respectful, Have Integrity, Have Determination, and Be Excellent) which will allow students to earn positive incentives. Parents and students can become involved in the various clubs and athletics offered at the Raider Nation at our website browardschools.com/ramblewoodmid. Parents interested in becoming involved in our wonderful PTO can contact the following email address for more information, rmspto@ramblewoodmiddlepto.com or parents may join us for our monthly School Advisory Counsel that takes place every third Thursday of the month at 8:15 AM in our schools media center.

working one on one at the student’s pace. As the student gains clarity into concepts that were not understood previously, the gaps in their learning will gradually begin to close. In summary, we’d recommend taking a three-step approach when dealing with learning gaps: • Understand why learning gaps form. • Identify specific gaps in the student’s learning. • Work with a teacher, tutor, or academic coach and revisit previous material. Once learning gaps begin to close, students often see huge improvements in both their grades as well as their overall attitude towards academics. Learning is constantly about moving forward and building upon previous knowledge, so it’s incredibly important for students to have a firm academic foundation in all subjects. Tutor Doctor South Fort Lauderdale provides one-to-one in-home and online tutoring for all ages and all subjects. We meet students where they are, to get them where they need to go. ark Trails Elementary is proud to announce the addition of a STEAM program to our extraordinary Specials program. STEAM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. Students are encouraged to take risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process to become innovators, educators, and lifelong learners. These 21st Century learners use collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication each day in the STEAM program. We look forward to welcoming all our families in August. It’s full STEAM ahead here at Park Trails!

tudents often experience gaps in their learning when a particular concept or subject taught in school was not fully understood. Here’s why learning gaps are a problem – and how to fix them! When talking about learning gaps, it’s important to understand how they form. Learning is based on educational building blocks (in the sense that new knowledge “builds” upon previous concepts that have been taught). Teachers have to cover a lot of content each year, and sometimes the class needs to move on to the next chapter. If a student didn’t really “get it” – there’s a good chance that any future concepts that rely on understanding this knowledge are going to be even more difficult to grasp. This is how learning gaps begin to form. Learning gaps have always been common in education, but the last year has been especially difficult for students. The transition to online learning has been a lot tougher on some students than others, and unfortunately this has led to an increase in learning gaps. The issue is compounded for students who were let out from school early in 2020, with some experiencing over 6 months of “down time” before starting virtual classes in the fall. This “COVID slide” compounded existing learning gaps that have always existed. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to addressing learning gaps is that students themselves are not always aware of why they are struggling. As a result, identifying learning gaps should be the first step any tutor or academic coach takes in order to create an individualized plan for the student moving forward. In general, the best way to address learning gaps is simple – go back and revisit the areas that need extra work. Although this seems like an obvious answer, remember that learning gaps form because students are often forced to “move on” with their class’s pace, regardless of whether or not they have gained a firm understanding of the concept being taught. Tutors have the unique ability to go back and revisit previous topics and subjects that weren’t clear,

Sessions held on Mondays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are developed in an enjoyable manner. The Parkland Juniorettes are high school girls dedicated to making a difference. This group has partnered with the Parkland Library to help younger students with reading. Building partnerships between our high-achieving high school students and elementary-age children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. We meet students where they are, to get them where they need to go. We believe that learning is not a one-size-fitsall proposition. Learning is easier when a student is home, learning at their pace, and on their terms. This is how we empower students to achieve their full potential. With Tutor Doctor, your child is embarking on a journey that will not only provide them with the educational building blocks they need to succeed but will help shape the very person they become. iverglades is excited to welcome back our staff, students, families, and community partners for the 2021-2022 school year! This year our theme is “Back on Track for Success” and we are ready for the journey! Over the past year and a half, we have been through many changes. As a school, community, and world at large, we have faced many challenges and obstacles. However, true to the spirit of who we are, the Riverglades community triumphed. Although school as we knew it had to be restructured in new, unfamiliar, and even uncomfortable ways many times over the last year and a half, the Riverglades community came together to ensure that our students had a safe, productive, and engaging learning environment. Despite the circumstances, our teachers and staff continued to give their best efforts while coping with the new normal to ensure that our students thrived. And thrive they did! Even with social distancing guidelines and fewer extracurricular activities, our students developed strong relationships with classmates and teachers and created special memories. Additionally, our fifth graders still enjoyed a few end-of-year festivities and ended their elementary school experience with a fun and personal Carmencement parade. Through it all, our students remained positive and worked hard to make the school year worthwhile. Last year our theme was “Stronger Together Even Though We Have To Be Apart” and it rang true. No

matter if we were, fully online, hybrid, in person or home on quarantine, our Riverglades community came together to ensure that our students were afforded the best possible education. Though it was not easy, we learned that we could handle anything that comes our way. The Life Skills that we teach our students as a core part of our Riverglades school culture, grew not only in our students but in all of us as well. With our experiences last year, we’ve gained new perspective, grew in patience, and developed perseverance. Riverglades students, teachers, staff, and families demonstrated true grit -more than we ever knew we had. Now, we are truly stronger than ever before. That’s why we are geared up for an amazing school year. We know that together with hard work, commitment, understanding and flexibility, we can blaze a trail in whatever path lies ahead. We are ready to continue the work we have been doing with an even more focused eye so that we can close any gaps that our students may have due to the pandemic. Join us for our Meet and Greet on August 17 for a brief introduction to your child’s teacher and a preliminary look at the 2021-2022 school year. Details will be sent out in a Parent Link. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there to kick off the opening of another great school year. Whatever lies ahead, we know that our Riverglades community is ready. We are excited for the new school year and are “Back on Track for Success!” All Aboard!
