Dear Readers, Welcome to the winter issue of Sports & Activities Directory! I am sending out my best wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy holiday season, and a very joyous and prosperous New Year! We are so happy to be back publishing and getting our directory into your hands again. Our advertisers, cities and schools have been incredible with their support as we successfully relaunched this fall with our back-to-school issue. I think you can all relate when I say how much I appreciate getting back to a version of normal life again. I have been blown away by the amount of excitement there was when the kids got our publication in their backpacks and how much their parents missed having this resource in their homes. Thank you to each one of you who shared your excitement at seeing us in print again! We can’t do what we do without you! In the pages ahead, you will find a multitude of events for you and your families to get out and celebrate the holidays. Check out our extensive Event Guide for all the details. This includes the Farmers Markets, Light Up the Park and the Coral Springs Annual Holiday Parade & Parkland’s Family Fun Fest. Don’t worry, we have you covered. Also, inside you will find winter break camps that will be offered while the kids are off. And, as many sports wrap up their fall seasons, remember to look through the sports directory (red tabbed) for winter and spring registrations taking place now. Also find ongoing afterschool programs and activities such as dance, gymnastics, coding, golf and tennis. Living in Florida offers a large variety of options for our children to enjoy while developing new friendships, physical and/or academic skills and overall enrichment as they challenge themselves with new activities. Be sure to check out all the great things our students and teachers are accomplishing in our local schools; from sports awards and academic accolades to community service projects and more. We continue to be so proud of our Coral Springs & Parkland schools. They truly are the best! I hope you find a way to get involved in our community and get out and play. Take some time to enjoy our wonderful Florida weather, head out to the parks and enjoy the many outdoor events during this time of year. My best to you,

n the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-nine years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the yearround effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 185 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 8,900 families (approximately 27,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time and beyond. Distribution

sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Donate food for our volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

Dear Readers,

November signifies the one year anniversary of when I was blessed with the honor of serving the residents as Mayor of the City of Parkland (City). How quickly this year has flown by. Our world continues to be affected by the pandemic. We have charged forward with modifications to embrace our new normal… children are back at school and businesses have implemented modifications to their processes. In order to move ahead, we have embraced change. We all embrace who we are as a City… but we also recognize the value of change in order to continue progress. I know we would love for things to continue to remain the same… our children to stay young, our lives to remain simple, our community to remain exactly as it has always been. But change is inevitable and with it comes progress—and how we manage change will define us, our community, and our future. As a family of seven, my amazing wife and five school-aged children are rooted in our community, organizations, athletic programs, and Parkland schools. I understand the current challenges we face and what we may face in the future. All five members of the City Commission have a unique perspective, but we all want what’s best for Parkland today, tomorrow, five years from now, even decades from now. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of this change it can sometimes get lost that we, too, are husbands, fathers, and residents of this wonderful City. It’s encouraging to see so many people getting engaged in what’s going on throughout our City. Nothing is more valuable than having a dialogue with residents on which we can base our decisions. We encourage you to be engaged and proactively involved. We love to see you at our meetings and around town. We are in this together to do what’s best for all of our residents and to continue to make Parkland the best City we can all call home. Veterans Day, observed annually in November, honors those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We can never forget to thank our Veterans, but with special gratitude on this day because without their sacrifices we would not have the freedoms and liberties we are blessed with in our Country. November welcomes Thanksgiving, which is one of my favorite holidays. It signifies the unofficial arrival of the holiday season and is a time to reflect and give thanks with family and friends. On Thanksgiving I prepare a huge meal while The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade plays on television. As our children get older, it’s even more special as they work alongside me in the kitchen. Also in November, Saturday the 27th is Small Business Saturday! Don’t forget to support our small businesses that help make our community special. Our City Commission will be showcasing the vast array of merchants, goods, and services offered in Parkland and we encourage you to do the same by using the hashtag #SmallBusinessSaturday on social media. The Parkland Farmers’ Market season begins in November and runs through April, with the first market date on November 7th. I know I will be there—probably first in line to pick up the highly anticipated apple cider donuts. As we look beyond November, into the heart of the holiday season, and into a new year, we hope for continued good news as it relates to COVID. I am proud of our community for the low rates of COVID that we have experienced and for the high rates of vaccinations. I remain confident that, so long as we continue to make good choices, we will get through this together. If you would like to share your thoughts about public service, or any other topic, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure you stay informed on events and helpful information. Your Parkland Mayor,

10

Dear Readers,

12

Our City has incredible momentum! New businesses continue to open at a rate twice as great as those that are moving on. I am so excited that Amera was able to work out a deal with Barnes and Noble to bring them back to the Walk. Our Economic Development office has made over 100 successful retention visits over the last fiscal year and our events are now live with great attendance. IF you want to learn more about new businesses as well as local construction areas, please visit our Website at www.coralsprings.org As this magazine is geared for our youth, please know that we have some of the best recreational programs in the Country including Coral Springs Youth Soccer. Unfortunately, we have a shortage of coaches. If you are interested in coaching, please visit the website, www.CSYS.ORG. Thank you to all of our League Coaches and directors for doing so much for our youth. I want to extend a personal thank you for the Directors of CSYS, including Mimi Bright, for lifting our youth and for giving the children and the parents the opportunity to safely engage in Youth Soccer during Covid. I am now hosting children from 3rd grade to 12th Grade on Fridays for Shadow the Mayor for the Day. Shadowing actually lasts anywhere from 1-3 hours and will take place at City Hall primarily. Sometimes, the young person that shadows me will join me for meetings, including with local businesses. TO schedule, you can contact Luwam Ghermay at 954-344-5906. I also usually host Office Hours every Friday and you can make an appointment with Luwam for that, as well. Congratulations to our City Manager, Frank Babinec and our City Attorney, John Hearn, for your stellar reviews recently by the City Commission. For those of you that don’t know, our City Commission is able to only direct two employees as a body. These two employees serve as our City Manager, who runs the City day to day and our City Attorney, who manages all of our legal affairs. They both have served the City for many years with great success! Thank you again Frank and John. Congrats to Boy Scout Troop 497 for coming to our recent Commission Workshop and learning about your local government! We urge other troops to do the same and earn their Community badges! Thank you again to Kim Kadel for sharing this article and so much more with all of our local schools. I also want to thank all of the teachers in Coral Springs for giving your heart, your time and your wisdom to all of our children. If you need to reach me, feel free to call my cell phone at 954-494-9872 or email me at Sbrook@ coralSprings.org. Please also follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter at CSCommissioner! Your Friendly Mayor,

Scott J. Brook

Mayor of Coral Springs

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlins game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. Email: rhibshman@bellsouth.net.

Lately our Attorneys have been getting a lot of

clients calling the office and inquiring about what a trust is and its potential benefits. As a result, I have decided to focus this issue’s article on answering, what I like to call, the 5 W’s of a trust. 1) WHAT: a trust is a legal document that transfers property during or after a person’s lifetime for the benefit of someone. The 2 most common types of trusts are: A Revocable and an Irrevocable Trust. A revocable trust can be changed or altered at any time by the creator or creators of the trust during his or her lifetime. In most circumstances, an irrevocable trust cannot be altered or changed. 2) WHO: a trust can be made out for the benefit of any person that you may want, including young children, your spouse, a friend, or your parents. 3) WHY: a trust can automatically transfer property without the use of a will or the need to go to court. Additionally, the use of a trust is usually faster than that of a normal will in transferring property and title as well, as it helps avoid the lengthy process of probate in courts. A trust also

has the following benefits: it secures your property for the benefit of your beneficiaries, it protects the property from claims from creditors while in the trust, and it also ensures your privacy (as a trust does not become a public record like a will does). Some trusts may even better your tax status if you fall above the taxable exemption. 4) WHERE: a trust can dispose of property anywhere, so long as the local law of where the property is located is followed and the property is properly titled in the name of the trust. 5) WHEN: a trust can be created today with the help of our attorneys. A trust is a very important document for the preservation of your property in the event of death or incapacitation. There are many factors to consider in creating a trust document and only a licensed attorney can walk you through the fine details of both the creation and the proper funding of a trust. The attorneys at Reinfeld Cabrera Tison have experience in creating trusts and can formulate a trust to meet all your needs.

hen your child needs to undergo surgery, it can be a frightening time for the whole family. Whether they are a delicate newborn or a hearty teenager, and need either a minor outpatient surgical procedure or a major life-saving surgery, you want to find a skilled and experienced surgeon to help them. Dr. Avraham Schlager, MD is an experienced pediatric surgeon at West Boca Medical Center who is skilled in a wide variety of procedures, from complex minimally-invasive surgeries on newborns to inflammatory bowel surgeries that help teenagers live happier, more comfortable lives. He also performs oncologic surgery for childhood malignancy, thyroid surgery and many other surgical procedures. Though orthopedic surgeons see the bulk of injured young athletes, he treats sports-related injuries like lacerated livers, punctured lungs and ruptured spleens. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, Dr. Schlager has noticed that some parents are hesitant to bring their child in to undergo elective surgery. “It’s always much easier to treat a medical issue in its earliest stages, rather than ignoring it or putting off treatment and having the potential for the problem to worsen,” Dr. Schlager explained. “If a child has symptoms that don’t resolve quickly, it’s important to have them checked. If there isn’t a serious, underlying cause, everyone will have peace of mind. If the child requires surgery, it’s better to do so when they are globally healthy. If, down the road, they get COVID and haven’t treated the preexisting issue, it could exacerbate it and make surgery more complicated. Our goal is to do our best to control the elements we can.” One of Dr. Schlager’s specialties is advanced minimally invasive surgery. He’s a large proponent of this type of procedure because of the excellent outcomes he sees.

“Minimally invasive surgery offers so many benefits to my pediatric patients. The smaller incisions are much less traumatic, resulting in less pain, a lower infection rate, reduced anxiety and much less dramatic scarring, which is especially important to the young people I operate on,” said Dr. Schlager. Dr. Schlager is proud to have joined the West Boca Medical Center staff last year. He admires the leaders of this hospital and their goal to continue building an impressive pediatric program, while also taking part in the collaboration that exists between West Boca Medical Center and their sister children’s hospital in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Dr. Schlager works alongside West Boca Medical Center’s multidisciplinary team of pediatric sub-specialists, in-house pediatricians and board-certified Pediatric Anesthesiologists who are all specially trained to care for children’s unique needs. In addition, West Boca Medical Center offers a 24-hour dedicated Pediatric Emergency Room, a pediatric same-day surgery center and pediatric inpatient rooms. “No other hospital system in the county offers a host of pediatric services that is this complete,” Dr. Schlager described. “And the staff is so good-natured and happy to serve their community.” When asked why he chose to be a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Schlager replied, “It is so rewarding to help a sick or injured child get better. There are no words to describe the happiness of seeing that child and his or her parents smile again!” To learn more about the pediatric surgery services offered at West Boca Medical Center, please visit westbocamedctr.com

Creating a Body Positive Household for Your Children A

Dr. Olivia Carelli & Dr. David Yudell

t around the age of five, children start to become aware of their body and how it is perceived by others. They begin to pick up clues on what is considered attractive or what they are “supposed” to look like to be accepted. Gradually, their body image becomes defined by gender expectations, opinions held by family and peers, and media they are exposed to. During these developmental years, children are particularly impressionable. These early experiences create the blueprint for how they will treat and talk about their bodies for the rest of their lives. Parents have the unique opportunity to help safeguard their child against low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders. Here are some ways that parents can build a body positive household. 1. Help them challenge stereotypes. We live in a fatphobic society, which means there is a socially acceptable bias against overweight people. We assign character and personality traits to “fat” people without even speaking to them. We don’t really know anything about someone by looking at their weight— including how healthy they are! Teach your kids that weight is not a determinant of a person’s work ethic, intelligence, or worth, and that body diversity is a good thing. Besides, if we all ate, drank, and exercised the same way, we would all still look different. 2. Model body comfort. Calling ourselves “fat”, “ugly” or any other selfdeprecating word in front of our children communicates that we don’t like ourselves, and if they look like us, they are doing something wrong. Try to speak neutrally about your body and food. You are not “bad” for eating a cupcake and you are not “good” for only eating vegetables. Assigning morality to food can become confusing for children and encourage secretive eating. 3 Seek out a doctor’s advice if you are concerned. The CDC states children

should NOT be placed on a weight reduction diet without the consultation of a health care provider. Children are growing, and it is critical they have adequate nutrients. Encourage children to eat a balanced diet and participate in healthy movement but try not to tie either of these to shame. Studies repeatedly show that “fat-shaming,” can acause stress hormones to rise and contribute to binge eating. Research has found that 95 to 98% of attempts at losing weight ultimately fail, and 66% of dieters wind up gaining back more weight than they lost. This is because losing just 3% of one’s body weight can cause a 17% slowdown in metabolism. Losing weight is complicated and comes down to a lot more than self-restraint. 4. Emphasize your child’s non-physical accomplishments. It’s okay to compliment your child’s appearance (although not weight, preferably), but try to balance out these compliments with ones that focus on their character, personality, or intelligence. “You are going to change the world” goes farther and deeper than “You are so tiny!” As they age and their appearance inevitably changes, deeper compliments will mean more to them. 5. Give yourself grace. Give yourself grace if you have talked poorly about your body in front of your child or encouraged your child to go on a restrictive diet. We live in a society that heavily values appearance, and many of these messages may have been taught to us by our own parents. Every day is a new opportunity to change a small part of our behavior. Plus, children are resilient. They will appreciate you taking a new direction! For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

epresenting District 96 is an opportunity that I value and appreciate and I am grateful for the trust you have placed in me to be your local voice in Tallahassee. Currently, we have three more committee weeks through the end of the year. We return to the Capitol from January 11 to March 11 for the 2022 Legislative Session. During the 2021 session the Legislature passed bipartisan, landmark legislation that will improve the quality of early learning, including early screening for children struggling academically. Additionally, we passed legislation that increased funding for mental health assistance, maintained the safe school’s allocation, and provided funding for the SW 10th Street project. Thanks to the advocacy of Stand with Parkland, I was proud to be part of passing school safety legislation which included timely parental notification of threats and significant emergencies and mental health training for school safety officers. During the special session, the Legislature approved the Seminole Compact which will bring additional funding to the State, Broward County, and all four cities in District 96 (Coconut Creek, Parkland, Margate, and Coral Springs.) Those who know me know how much I enjoy the work I do. As a first term legislator and with the support of my colleagues, I was able to pass six pieces of my legislation that included important bike and pedestrian safety, school safety, and improving mobile access to Florida’s unemployment system. Mobile access to the system is one of the many reforms needed to support our workers and to strengthen the state’s unemployment system. One of the issues closest to my heart is improving access to quality mental healthcare in Florida. My bill, establishing the Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse, passed as part of SB 96 and I was honored to be appointed to the Commission by Florida House Speaker Chris Sprowls. This Commission is charged with making interim recommendations next year and final recommendations in 2023. You can learn more about the Commission and view past/upcoming meetings at https://myflfamilies.com/service-programs/samh/commission/index.shtml. While the holidays can be a time of celebration, they can also be difficult for those who are experiencing life challenges or missing loved ones around the holiday table. It’s a great time to check on your family, friends, and neighbors to let them know you care. It is my hope that we all experience the blessings of love, health, compassion, and peace this holiday season. If you need mental health support or are in crisis, please call 211. Please know that my team and I are always here to help. Contact us at HDist096@myfloridahouse.gov or at 954-956-5600 should you need assistance with any state agencies or services. Periodically, we will email information on resources available to you as well as updates from Tallahassee. To receive these updates, please email us with “subscribe” in the subject line. Also, check out my updates on Facebook @RepChristineHunschofsky and Twitter @RepHunschofsky. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you in the Florida House of Representatives. I wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!

amblewood Middle School was super excited to welcome back all our students, new and old, to campus for the start of the 2021-2022 school year! The theme for the Raider Nation this year is “Mission: I’M POSSIBLE!” Our theme is also being support by our newly rolled out Positive Behavior Initiative called Raider PRIDE which stands for Preparation, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence. Our students can earn tickets by showing acts of kindness during the school day in hopes to be able to attend the Raider Resource Reward Room during their lunch with some of their friends. The Raider Nation has already started to rack up the awards and accolades for this school year starting with our Chorus Department. Three of our students were chosen from a group of 1,000 state-wide auditions to represent Ramblewood Middle in the Florida American Choral Directors Association Annual Honor Choir. We also had two Raiders try out and move onto round two of the All-State Honor Choir. We are excited to cheer them both on in the next round of auditions. Each month our speech and debate team, The Bullseye Club, ranging through all grade levels and including over 100 students, compete in monthly tournaments with other middle schools in the Broward County. Our first month’s tournament was a great success as four of our students medaled in three different events; original oratory, poetry, and prose. In athletics, our boys’ soccer team, Ramblewood Middle School Football Club, went undefeated during their regular season and are headed to the playoffs. The Raider Golf Team had a great season that resulted in 5 boys and 2 girls qualifying for the MSAA Golf Tournament. Boys and Girls Basketball is gearing up with tryouts
