Dear Readers,

“Happy New Year to you all!” Here’s to a year of embracing time spent with our loved ones and being a participant in life rather than a spectator. We at Sports and Activities Directory wish you an abundance of health, wealth and happiness for 2018! So, how are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? Are you spending more quality time with your family, being more organized, eating healthier, being more active in the community or sticking with that exercise program? Hopefully, you are following through with whatever your plan may be for 2018. If you find yourself wandering or deviating from your good intentions, don’t give up, re-evaluate your goals while trying to keep them realistic. If we start out the year aiming to win Parent of The Year Award, or to become the next American Ninja Warrior…well, I’m not saying it can’t be achieved, but there is a good chance we might be setting ourselves up for failure. Perhaps if we start by making each step a smaller and more attainable goal, we will be more likely to reach them quicker. Each goal accomplished will in turn make us feel strong, successful and more motivated to take the next step and eventually reach our ultimate goal. Within the pages ahead, we hope to be able to assist you with keeping your balance while accomplishing your goals. We may not have direct solutions for you, but if you think outside the box a little, there’s a good chance there will be something that can help you get on your way. Maybe you need a couple of extra hours a day to study for that new certification you’re gunning for? We have an abundance of afterschool activities and Spring/Summer Camps to keep your youngsters occupied while you take that time to further your career or perhaps learn a new trade! If you are looking to develop or improve your fitness levels, there are some terrific facilities available to us in our community. Perhaps sign up for some Personal Training Sessions, a Pilates Class or a Fitness Boot Camp, anything that makes you have to be accountable. By committing your time, taking some expert instruction and challenging yourself with something new, you can be sure to keep your body safe and expect positive results. If your goal is to spend more quality time with your family, take a look in our EVENTS section. There are some fabulously fun happenings around town over the next couple of months. Both Davie and Cooper City host their biggest events of the year. With festivities happening all weekend for either of these occasions, it’s a great time to go see a concert, participate in or watch a parade, maybe even go to the rodeo! A few hours of family fun results in memories that last a lifetime. Whatever your aspirations, desires or dreams are for the year ahead. I wish you much success, love and family fun along the way. Now go out there and win that Parent of Year Award. “Me?... I’ll see you the next American Ninja Warrior tryouts!”

My warmest wishes,

Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

10

I hope that everyone is having a great start to 2018! This year is going to be a big year for “Cowboy Town” Davie, Florida. Several projects involving the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department will be completed this year. The Town’s first two artificial turf fields will be opened in February, and Fire Station 86 and the Shenandoah Community Center will open toward the later part of 2018. We will also break ground on a new clubhouse at the Davie Golf and Country Club in late summer or early fall. As I’m sure that you are all aware of by now, the end of February is one of my favorite times of the year as we host the Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade, and Rodeo. The year 2018 marks the 81st Orange Blossom Festival and my 44th year participating in the Orange Blossom Parade! The three-day Festival will kick off with a free concert at the Old Davie School House from 6:00pm – 9:00pm on Friday, February 23rd. On Saturday, February 24th, the parade will begin at 10:00am and will travel south on Davie Road, from SW 39th Street to Orange Drive. This year’s parade theme is: “Rockin’ through the Years”. Following the parade, I invite you all to enjoy a full day of musical performances, community performances, exhibits, vendors, food, and fun! The festival is scheduled from 9:00am – 6:00pm on Saturday, February 24th and 9:00am – 5:00pm on Sunday, February 25th. As always, the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds where cowboys and cowgirls compete in competitions that include bull riding, bareback riding, cattle wrestling, barrel racing, and team cattle roping. The Rodeo will begin at 7:30pm on Saturday, February 24th and 2:00pm on Sunday, February 25th. Join us in Cowboy Town for a weekend full of fun and great entertainment! The Town of Davie offers numerous youth sports leagues throughout the year. Did you know that participation in youth sports provide numerous health and social benefits for your child? Benefits of participation in youth sports include enhanced physical development, improved endurance, character building, improved self-esteem, strengthened perseverance, and teamwork skills. Our Sports Division is currently taking registration for Spring/Summer Soccer and Youth Basketball. We even provide Smart Start Sports for 3 – 4 year olds. Smart Start Sports are a great way for you to introduce your child to sports. Our staff and partners will work closely with your child to teach them basic fundamentals while having a ton of fun! When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember, whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, your Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Town of Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Dear Cooper City Friends:

12

We are finally debris-free in Cooper City! Over time, we will all be back to normal, but we will not soon forget the lessons we have learned through this process. Your city officials and management have taken note of every aspect of the Hurricane Irma recovery process and we will put our experience to good use, should we encounter another weather incident of this kind in the future. In preparation for the upcoming legislative session, I’ll share some thoughts with you regarding proposed legislation that affects us all as Florida residents: The Florida League of Cities has five legislative policy committees that consider matters closely affecting municipal service and authority. The five committees are broken down as Finance, Taxation & Personnel; Land Use & Economic Development; Municipal Administration; Transportation & Intergovernmental Relations and Utilities, Natural Resources & Public Works. Public officials, such as myself, volunteer to serve on these committees and work to formulate an action plan. These plans outline the most prevalent issues that impact daily municipal function. Each of these five policy committees has identified a priority for the upcoming legislative session and will be aggressively addressing one “super priority” to reinforce and defend local home-rule. These five priorities are water funding, transportation funding, sober homes, community redevelopment agencies and communications services tax protection. Water Funding: The Florida League of Cities (FLC) supports legislation that provides longterm, recurring, adequate and equitably distributed state funding to address water resources. Long-term funding mechanisms must be established in an effort to combat Florida’s growing water resource and infrastructure challenges in pursuit of improvements to water quality, water supply distribution, flood mitigation and sustainability. Transportation Funding: Florida League of Cities SUPPORTS legislation that preserves local control of transportation planning, provides for a more equitable transportation funding formula between municipalities and counties and provides for additional dedicated revenue options for municipal transportation infrastructure and transit projects. (Legislative Action Agenga, 2018, pp. 14, 15). Municipalities currently have limited transportation funding avenues, while local option taxes adopted by counties, are distributed by often unfavorable statutory formulas. Extending local fuel tax options to cities or offering a mechanism for low-interest loans or grants for transportation projects are avenues by which the state could assist municipalities with transportation project funding. Sober Homes: While grave concern over the opioid epidemic looms ominously upon us, the upsurge of sober homes offers minimal assistance to the afflicted, and further exploits this vulnerable population. With little to no oversight, regulation or certification required, sober homes have become more an insurance-draining scheme than centers of recovery and healing. The Florida League of Cities SUPPORTS legislation requiring certification for all recovery residences and recovery residence administrators to ensure that this vulnerable population is protected; and that recovery residence administrators have the competencies necessary to appropriately respond to the needs of residents. (Legislative Action Agenga, 2018, pp. 12,13) Community Redevelopment Agencies: CRAs provide for the revitalization and redevelopment of economically exhausted communities affected by crime and neglect. It is imperative that local home rule prevails for CRAs, as their success depends upon the authority and flexibility to tend to the needs of their local communities. Communications Services Protection: Communications Services Tax legislation is in need of reform to promote tax-neutral competition; allowing consumers to choose their providers strictly based on service, quality and plan option considerations. Please familiarize yourself with the matters that will affect you now and in the future, before you cast a ballot. Feel free to contact me if there is anything you would like to discuss on this or any issue that affects our city. Look for our upcoming events, programs and activities located in the directory of this publication. With our thoughts and actions, we make the world a better place.

Greg Ross Mayor

JEFF GREEN

Greetings, Sports Fans!

Happy New Year!! We are already into 2018, and it’s shaping up to be another year of the unexpected! A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the University of Central Florida’s Football Team, for a perfect season! They can boast that no other team went undefeated this year, and our hats are off to them. I know that many of our children attend UCF and I just wanted to show them some love! As we continue to move rapidly through this year, it’s important for us to focus on the things that positively impact our lives and the lives of others. Earlier this year I was fortunate to attend the YMCA’s 14th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Inspirational Breakfast, at the First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. It was very impressive to see all the folks who regularly support the organization’s outreach activities in attendance, and to hear about the thousands of volunteer hours that people in local communities contribute each year.

It reinforced in me the fact that our communities are stronger when we are willing to support our fellow citizens that may find themselves in situations which prevent them from being selfsufficient. It reminded me that all of us have the capacity to be people of compassion! Compassion compels you and I to advocate on behalf of others who find themselves out of resources. It’s probably safe to say that there are times in our own lives when we require the support of others during an uncomfortable moment, and hope that there are family and friends that can come to our aid. We have a social and moral responsibility for the care of others, that should extend beyond our own personal lives. At this very moment, our nation and our world both need caring human beings to set aside their political, cultural, and socioeconomical differences, to come together in an effort to make this world a better place! We must be the change that we desire to see in our world! This year should be one of which we volunteer our time, as well as our resources, for those in our communities who may be unable to support themselves. Our communities are stronger when the least of those in it are supported and empowered! God bless you and God bless our nation!

I

n 1909, hardy pioneers began to move west by boat to the new farmland in the Everglades. They called this place Zona, or as we would know it later—Davie. The families started their lives in small tin houses or tents, as they gambled their success in the black muck soil. For the children on this frontier, life meant hard work on the farms, but also time for fun, swimming, and fishing in the freshly dug canals. Above all, education remained an important factor for families. School was first held in a packing house along the South New River canal, which runs parallel to today’s Griffin Road. As word of the rich, fertile soil of the reclaimed Everglades brought a growing population to Davie, the town knew it was time for a permanent school house. The Davie School opened its doors in 1918 to 90 students, with four classrooms downstairs and a large auditorium upstairs. The school was designed by August Geiger, a prominent South Florida architect known for his Mediterranean style. Tall windows allowed light and cooler air into the classrooms, as the school was without electricity until 1923. An outdoor pump provided fresh, clean drinking water for students. With the first indoor plumbing in town, the building stood as a solid example of the town’s modernization. The small town gathered for the dedication of the school on May 10th, 1918. With readings of poetry, songs, and a flag drill presented by the students of Davie. Charles A. Walsh, owner of a local orange grove, accepted the building on behalf of the town: “We accept and thank you for this splendid building, a building no matter how large and important this community may grow, will ever be the center of its social action and the main cause of any progress we may make. The citizens of Davie will take pride in it, will maintain and cherish it.” The school quickly became the center of community life in Davie, with dances, box suppers, holiday programs, community plays, social functions and elections. In 1925, a small group of residents met in the auditorium to initiate

incorporation and elected Frank Stirling, a prominent Davie pioneer and namesake of Stirling Road, as the first Mayor of Davie. The school building provided shelter during hurricanes and floods; a refuge built on higher ground, with strong poured concrete walls. For 60 years, the Davie School served the local community, but the growing student population required more space. Teachers and students of the historic Davie School moved to the new Davie Elementary in 1978. The South Central Area Broward County School Board used the building as office space, but the fate of the school was in question. There was consideration for turning the site into a bus maintenance depot. With the looming threat of development, the Soroptimist International of Davie identified the need to preserve the aging building. In 1984, the group formed the Davie School Foundation, Inc. to rally support and to ensure the future of the school as a historic site. After years of dedicated volunteer work, raising funds and building awareness in the town, the Old Davie School successfully received listing on the National Register of Historic Places in March of 1988. Today, the Old Davie School actively serves the community as a museum, illustrating the story of the agricultural community that has grown into the bustling town today. Classes have returned to the halls on field trips for the StepBack-in-Time school program, which shows students the life of the pioneers—writing with dip ink pens in the restored 1920s classroom, washing laundry on a washboard, and squeezing fresh orange juice. Guests of all ages can schedule guided tours Tuesday through Saturday. Private events hosted at the Old Davie School, such as weddings, reunions, luncheons and more, are memorable occasions in the historic venue. The Davie School will celebrate 100 Years with a Gala, Concerts and Festival on May 10th-12th, 2018, inviting the community to come together again to prepare for a new century! Follow the Old Davie School at www.olddavieschool.org, and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as we prepare for the Centennial Celebration!

rain Balance identifies the issues, sets a resolution plan and gets your child to a place of progress. We create a holistic view of your child through an initial set of tests that identify areas that need attention and strengthening. From the results of that assessment we create a plan focused on getting your child back on track. The initial assessment can be done in an afternoon. Assessments include sensory, motor and cognitive testing of a large volume of functions designed to identify areas of the brain that might have a developmental delay, which can lead to an imbalance or functional disconnection. Upon completion of testing, you will be provided with a detailed report of your child’s results but you are under no obligation to continue with program. These results help us create a fully individualized program addressing your child’s specific challenges. Brain Balance provides a comprehensive, non-medical approach that combines physical and sensory exercises with academic skill training and healthy nutrition. Your child’s journey starts in our center, but continues at home with exercises and a clean-eating nutrition program. Parent conferences occur every 12 sessions, and a one-year post assessment is conducted after completion of the program. Online tools will help guide you through every aspect of the program and provide all the instruction you need for success. Our exercise videos and music are available for download and accessible anywhere, anytime on any device. It’s all provided for your convenience. Program Timeline: 1. In-depth assessment of your child enables us to personalize a program that meets your child’s needs. The assessment covers a large number of issues that we share and discuss with you. 2. Number of sessions is determined by the results of your child’s assessment. Generally, programs are completed in approximately 3 to 6 months time in Center,

By: Monica R. Mularski , Co-Owner/Center Director

with some children needing more time to achieve their goals. 3. Performance reports are provided every 12 weeks and presented at parent conferences. The center also reached out to speak with your child’s classroom teacher. A follow-up performance review takes place approximately one year after completing the program. 4. In-Center sessions consist of one hour, three times a week. Each hour consists of sensory motor training and cognitive/academic skills. 5. The activities at home are key to successful outcomes. We provide a bevy of tools for establishing a healthy environment. From exercise to a Clean-Eating nutrition program, to a positive atmosphere at home, you’ll have tools - like a full program guide (in print and online) with all the direction you need. Our holistic approach will have your child and your entire family feeling great and performing at levels that will surprise you. The components of our program are: - Sensory-Motor training - Cognitive skill training - At-home daily exercises - Clean-Eating nutrition system - Community and on-line support Our program is drug-free. It does not replace medical advice, rather it complements it. As a proud Brain Balance #WarriorMom I can tell you that the program was life changing for, not just my son, but for my entire family. My family and I are excited to bring the program to our local community and can’t wait to see the progress our enrolled families make!

ental health and physical health are closely related. Keeping physically fit helps our mental health, as it is very hard to stay psychologically healthy when our physical health is poor. If we are functioning poorly physically, it can take an emotional toll on us as well. The Importance of Eating Healthfully to Benefit Mental Health: You’ve probably heard the saying, “you are what you eat,” but what exactly does that mean? Simply put, food is fuel, and the kind of fuel you consume determines the types of nutrients in your system; therefore, impacting how your mind and body function. In other words, if you eat poorly you’ll tend to feel poorly. Food can play a contributing role in the treatments of depression, anxiety, and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Eating a healthy diet can help play a part in one’s treatment plan. However, a healthy diet alone should not be considered a substitute for medication or psychotherapy. The Importance of Exercising Regularly to Benefit Mental Health: One can reap all the physical and mental health benefits of exercise with just 30 minutes of moderate exercise, five times a week. Two 15-minute, or even three 10-minute exercise sessions can also work just as well. It is a well-known fact that regular exercise is good for the body, but exercise is also one of the most effective ways to improve our mental health as well. Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, ADD, and more. It can help to relieve and reduce stress, enhance coping skills, improve memory, aid sleep, and to boost one’s mood overall. Exercise stimulates the growth of new brain cells, which has been shown to help in age-related memory decline. It changes the brain in ways that help protect memory and thinking skills. Regular physical activity can also foster a sense of self-worth and a higher self-esteem; helping us

to feel stronger both physically and mentally. Exercise cannot cure depression, anxiety, or ADD, but it can help improve the symptoms. Aerobic exercises such as running, swimming, biking, and dancing are all mood-boosting. The Importance of Getting a Good Night’s Sleep to Benefit Mental Health: Research strongly suggests that sleep, which accounts for about a third of our lives, is crucial for learning and forming long-term memories. While you’re sleeping, your brain processes complex stimuli, forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information that can help you to make decisions, be attentive, and problem-solve while awake. Sleep has a significant effect on the hippocampus; an area of the brain involved in memory creation and consolidation. Sleep therefore plays an extremely important role in learning, as it allows us to develop and process information for better recall, while promoting creativity as well. There is a close relationship between sleep and mental health, as sleep is essential to the maintenance of one’s mental health. Insufficient sleep has been associated with increased stress, and emotional reactivity and disturbance. Adequate sleep leads to improved mood and emotional well-being. Studies suggest that a good night’s sleep helps foster both mental and emotional resilience. Caring for your body and mind may mean that you’ll not only live longer, but better as well. Eating healthfully, exercising regularly and getting a good night’s sleep are all important aspects to both the health of our mind and body.

Is Social Media Impacting our Well-Being? By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

S

ocial media has become a part of everyday life for the majority of internet users. The global amount of time spent on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, is steadily increasing every year, with statistics from 2017 indicating an average of 116 minutes per day. This means that the average person will spend over 5 YEARS of their lifetime on social media! (aweek.com). We must consider the impact that social media has on our well-being and the development of our children as they become engulfed in similar amounts of usage. Several studies have found links between social media use and increased depression, anxiety, body image issues, and relationship problems. However, other studies have identified positive effects of social media use, such as increased social support. While these findings raise important considerations, they are inconclusive. Furthermore, very few studies have contributed to our understanding about why these effects occur. For example, some researchers hypothesize that negative effects may be a result of social comparison or reduced meaningful, face-to-face interaction with others – but the truth is, we just don’t know exactly why! Perhaps the key to determining social media’s true impact on our well-being lies

in investigating the way that we use social media, rather than simply considering whether one uses it or not. In our clinical experience ,we have found that our clients (of all ages) have achieved “healthier” social media use by gaining and implementing the understanding that: 1) Social media popularity (e.g., number of “likes” or “followers”) does not determine one’s true value or worth. 2) The lives of social media users are never as problem-free as portrayed. 3) Support and advice for mental health issues is best sought from professionals, rather than via social media. We have a responsibility as parents to teach our children how to use social media. To do this we need to become models for them. The amount of time we spend on and the way we use social media holds a direct tie to how our children will follow in kind. We will be exploring our own study to better understand how we can positively impact social media usage in our lives and the lives of our children. If you are interested in completing a survey to be included in the study, please email us at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

riffin Elementary has various programs that make us unique. Amongst many of our curricular activities, our Volunteer Program is probably our biggest and most successful. With over 200 registered volunteers, our students can benefit from activities such as individual tailored support, Fun Run, Field Day, Bingo Nights, Literary Fair Nights, our very own Publishing Center, and more! Since Griffin Elementary is such a special place, we have various retired teachers and other staff members that have returned to work with students and help them with their reading skills assist with hands-on activities. Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, these volunteers come and sit at close proximity with individual or small groups of children in order to assist with their unique needs. We also have our volunteers run our Fun Run, which raised almost $30,000 last year to buy technology for the students and supplemental materials. Under the guidance of our Parent Teacher Association (PTA), these volunteers came last year and assisted with organizing the run, distributing medals, and refreshments for all our students. Other fun activities such as our Bingo Night and Literary Night, encourages families to come together for an academic and fun night out, which also support our school with various initiatives. One of our favorite programs that we have here at Griffin is our Publishing Center. This program opened its doors in September of 1998 and has had approximately 450 stories submitted. Students bring their stories to the Publishing Center where our volunteers help edit their writings, compile information for each student’s biography, and help students select a cover for their book. Stories are then typed, proofed, and sent back to the students for illustrations. These books are then displayed in our Media Center and various books are selected for a special Author Reading for the parents to come and enjoy. These are just some of the few things that our volunteers do, as there is so much more! We really are blessed to have these individuals come to our school and spread their generosity and love to our children and our staff. We could not be the school that we are without our STAR volunteers. Thank you for shining this bright light on us!

PIONEER HAS THE ONE AND ONLY

magine a normal classroom, with students sitting in rows, taking notes at their desks, typing up essays on a laptop, or maybe working on a science lab experiment. Now imagine a classroom with rows of wood tables, saws, and blades “whirring” as they cut through wood. The earthy smell of birch fills the air, and lines of students work on their masterpieces as they learn how to use tools they don’t normally use. There is only one classroom like this in all of Broward County: Woodshop at Pioneer Middle. Mr. Cole runs the Pioneer Middle School Woodshop program, an elective for seventh and eighth graders that are looking for a fun yet educational course. “Woodshop is way more than just creating things out of wood,” said Mr. Cole when describing his class. “It’s hands-on skills, thinking, using materials, and planning.” Mr. Cole adds that “safety is number 1. Not only do students have the ability to learn creative wood-working skills in a short amount of time, but they are also having fun. Eighth grader, Divya Dhawan says, “I love Mr. Cole’s dedication to his students and his job. I also love how my creativity is unrestricted and I have the ability to make new and exciting projects.” Some of the projects they work on are a duck shaped recipe holder, a name plate, and a project of their own design Cole started his Woodshop Career at Dade County, teaching the class for 38 years. During that time, he taught Architectural Drawing and Woodshop. He retired, but eventually

found himself returning to the field at Pioneer. “When students have the opportunity to develop their God-given skills, many doors are opened to them that may not include college,” he said. This is one of the reasons why Mr. Cole came back to the field. In a time where many students feel that a four-year college education is the only option, having taken this elective allows them the opportunity to follow paths that lead to many different careers, some of which may not need a university level education. Eighth grader Skylar Doherty is an aide for the class. She says, “In class, students learn how to use different kinds of tools.” The truth is, that woodshop is a necessary elective that teaches kids to be creative, innovative, and hands-on,” added Cole. Currently, the woodshop program is the only one in Broward County because other schools disbanded it. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity since no other schools in Broward County have woodshop as a class and students should take advantage of it,” Sharon Faroh says. Mr. Cole is actively trying to encourage Broward County to reintroduce shop to its selection of courses. By “just talking about it”, the program could one day be revived. “I could only hope.” he states. As for his role at Pioneer, Cole says, “I’m doing what I like to do.” As far as his students are concerned, they are glad that he is here and making a difference in their lives.

NOVA PROMOTES ALUMNI PRIDE

By Corinne Dannon

W

hat do star actor and comedian Jeff Garlin, former NFL player Autry Denson, and hip hop record producer Scott Storch all have in common? They are all alumni of Nova High School in Davie, Florida. While the school has an impressive roster of alumni, including the Honorable Stacey Shulman for the 17th Circuit in Florida, Paige O’Hara, the original voice of Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and Emmy-award winning newscaster Lindsay Cohen, Nova is working to build their alumni network in order to establish pride and create more connections between the school community and its alumni. “Being a Titan is a unique honor, and students knowing how it will contribute and help their post graduate life is important, and that is only something Alumni can show them,” said Drididi Byrd, Theatre Director at Nova High and graduate of the Nova Titan Class of 1996. Byrd is currently serving as an organizer helping to build the Nova alumni community. “The goal is to not only help financially support the school, which can be done by donating or assisting with on-campus projects, but to also provide the answer to ‘Life after Nova’, the benefits of being a Titan as well as the responsibility,” Byrd said. Alumni will be invited to mentor, speak and volunteer with Nova’s students and the school community. “We hope

they will share experiences and wisdom with our students as they move to post high school into the real world. Nova’s Alumni community is huge and extremely diverse, as reflective as the current student body. There is something for everyone, to possibly help professionally and personally, our students just need to be introduced to his vast network,” she added. Nova’s principal Dr. John LaCasse believes that support and involvement from past alumni will benefit the school in more ways than one. “Strong alumni networks build tradition and history in a school. They also assist in supporting school initiatives and give back to the school through financial donations and academic scholarships,” he said. As part of its efforts to increase alumni participation, Nova will host an Alumni Day on May 18 that will consist of Alumni and student discussions, an Alumni basketball game with volunteer vendor booths, and a Titan Tailgate. Any Alumni or community members interested in attending or participating can email Ms. Byrd at Drididi.Byrd@browardschools.com or visit Nova’s E-Store for multiple ways to donate or purchase Alumni gear at https://goo.gl/tesFVS.

T

he kids are back in school, and that means that kids’ sports events are in full swing. Recently, TIME magazine shared that kids’ sports is a growing business – a $15.3 billion industry that has nearly doubled in the last 10 years. Between league fees, camps, equipment, training, and travel, families are spending as much as 10% of their income on sports, according to survey research from Utah State University – and that number can go up substantially if your child starts to compete at a higher level or if you have multiple kids participating What can parents do to manage their spending? Here are some simple tips from Andrew Wilson, Consumer Banking & Merrill Edge Region Executive, to help manage the cost of kids’ sports. Plan Ahead: Your child’s sports involvement is a lifestyle expense, so you will need to plan. Creating a budget before the season starts allows you to have good handle on how many games are at home or away; the cost of travel if games and meets are a far distance; and what type of equipment or uniform costs you can anticipate for the year ahead. Make sure to periodically review your budget. If the costs are mounting, and you are wondering where to pull the extra cash from, look at other discretionary spending items and see where there may be opportunities to reduce spending. Also look for ways to double dip to minimize overall family costs; for example, when traveling for tournaments and/or summer camp, consider extending the trip to include a family vacation, thereby saving on an additional travel expense.

Get Creative with Your Spending: The laundry list of sports equipment that the little athletes may require can seem endless. However, you should be mindful of which are the most important. Buy only what is necessary, and consider utilizing used sporting goods stores, friends and neighbors, and even renting. Kids grow quickly, so sometimes they might only get one season out of a pair of hockey skates or cleats – don’t be shy to borrow, buy used, or rent. Find Ways to Share: Help other parents save, too, by suggesting carpools and potlucks. These two simple acts can help parents save on gas, and help avoid the temptation to buy overpriced concession food or to go out to eat after every game. It may also make sense to ask your children to have some skin in the game and help fund (through monetary gifts or part time earnings) in order to help defray the expenses. Helping young children build financial literacy can reap great rewards for them in the long run. Finally, it is important to remember that recreational sports are a lifestyle expense that need to be funded from current income. You should avoid running up debt to fund these activities. To that same point, do not lose sight of long-term vs. short-term goals. For example, make sure you continue to contribute to your retirement plans (401K, 403 B etc.) and education funds (529’s). As a parent, it is understandable to want to give your kids everything – just be sure you are being thoughtful about the expenses involved, because there are plenty of ways to plan and save.
