Dear Readers,

The end of the school year is upon us and I hope your children had a wonderful year of learning in person while bonding with friends and involving themselves in school activities and sports. Don’t forget to thank your teachers and administrators at your school for all their collective hard work and effort to educate and involve your children. They spend more time with our kids than we do during the week, and they spend more time with your kids than their own! I hope everyone can take a minute and write a note to someone in school who has make a positive impact on your child. Little things like that go a long way to keep our teachers feeling appreciated and inspired. If we’ve learned nothing else through the pandemic, health and family should be at the top of our priority list. Make the effort to involve yourself and attend your children’s games, events and activities. Make the time for yourself and your family to eat healthy and exercise. Gather your family and friends and reconnect with barbecues and celebrations. The biggest regrets are missed opportunities with those we love and cherish. This issue features awesome summer camps in your town and surrounding areas. Use our camp directory to explore new avenues of interest or to further develop your children’s passions and talents. Summer is an exciting time for your children. Hopefully, vacations and sleeping in are a part of this summer, but consider a few sessions of camp to keep their physical, mental and emotions acuities developing and evolving. The Sports & Activities Directory is a wealth of information to peak everyone’s interest. Find some local events to attend, catch a baseball game or concert, enjoy a theater performance, parade or fireworks for 4th of July. Create beautiful traditions and memories with your family, neighbors and friends…that’s what we are all about! As we are about to celebrate 20 years of publishing, we couldn’t be more proud of what we do for our communities. It is truly an honor to highlight and promote the thousands of activities, events, sports, organizations and businesses, not to mention our youth athletes and coaches in each city where we publish. Please visit our website to view any of our 5 online area magazines with interactive links to all of our advertisers. You are able to flip through in a magazine format or download the entire magazine to your device. Please mention the Sports & Activities Directory when you visit our advertisers, because we can’t do what we do without them! Be well! Be safe! Be kind! My best to you,

Margot

Hello Davie Residents,

8

I hope that everyone is excited for another incredible summer in Cowboy Town, Davie Florida! As always, we have a wonderful lineup of activities and special events for all our Town of Davie Residents to enjoy over the next few months. The #SaferBy4 campaign, spearheaded in the Town of Davie by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and Fire Department is an effort to reduce preventable childhood deaths. #SaferBy4 is designed to help children reach their fourth birthday by teaching our youth basic water safety skills through swim lessons. These lessons are key to ensuring that all of our children not only reach the age of four but go on to live happy and healthy lives. Swim lessons are available at the Betty Booth Roberts Pool throughout the summer, and at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center year-round. You can also beat the heat this summer at our Splash Pad located in Shenandoah Park. We are happy to announce that once again, our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has a fantastic lineup of in person events this summer for everyone to enjoy. On Monday, May 30th, join the Town of Davie and the Boy Scouts of America, as we honor our fallen heroes during our annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The incredible sacrifices made by these patriots, have allowed us to live in the United States of America, with liberty and freedom of expression for which we are eternally grateful. The parade will start at 10:00am from the Fire Station on Orange Drive and will continue to 65th Way. It will then make its way north towards the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The parade will be followed by a ceremony to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. On Saturday, June 4th, the annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo will be held at the Town of Davie Golf and Country Club. Our fishing rodeo is a catch and release event where we focus on conservation and sportsmanship. Prizes will be awarded for various categories of fish caught. We look forward to having all our Davie anglers back in person again, trying to reel in the big one! Join us at Bamford Sports Complex on Monday, July 4th for our annual Independence Day Celebration to celebrate the birthday of our incredible nation. Festivities will kick off at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center from 10:00am – 4:00pm and will include a water treasure hunt and much more! The fun times continue on the grass sport fields from 5:00pm-9:00pm with food trucks, games, activities and live music. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy our incredible fireworks display! When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember: Whether it’s youth sports, fitness, swimming, recreation classes, or community special events, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call: (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook.

AROUND TOWN

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 34 | May - Mid August 2022

Dear Cooper City Residents,

10

Spring is a season of new beginnings and it is fitting to see so many residents and visitors returning to organized sports and programs throughout Cooper City. Speaking of returning, we had a phenomenal Founder’s Day filled with the traditional pomp and circumstance, family friendly activities, concert, and fireworks! It was a joy to see so many friends and neighbors coming together for this annual celebration. Thank you to all those who made it a very special Founder’s Day. I also hope you had time to “hop” over to a pair of fun events in April. Cooper City hosted the “Teen Twilight Egg Hunt” at the Pool and Tennis Center. It was a free evening of fun for participants between the ages of 13 and 17. A day later, the City hosted the free and family favorite “Egg-Stravaganza” at Flamingo West Park. It was a wonderful Easter weekend for “Someplace Special.” Of course, Easter was just one of the meaningful dates on the April calendar for our religious communities. My wish is that the holy month of Ramadan was filled with many blessings for our Muslim neighbors and I pray that our Jewish brothers and sisters enjoyed a happy and healthy Passover. Looking ahead, I know many parents may still be weighing options when it comes to summer camp. Cooper City’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering a robust camp packed with fun events and activities including swimming, field trips, games, arts and crafts and much more! Registration is now open to residents and non-residents at the Community Center and the Pool and Tennis Center. The deadline to register for Cooper City’s Summer Camp is June 3. If you have questions, please call 954-434-4300, option #3. As we look forward to summer, I must mention to save the date for Cooper City’s next “Eat to the Beat,” which will be held on Friday, July 8, at Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex. Special events are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors, but please remember that our Parks and Recreation Department facilitates programs and activities on a weekly basis. Whether you are looking for health and fitness opportunities, or searching for events that cater to our seniors, there is always something happening at the Community Center and the Pool and Tennis Center. Earlier this month, we marked a very special day. My hope is that all of our Cooper City moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, and motherly figures enjoyed a very happy Mother’s Day! It was great to see many of our community’s moms and daughters enjoying a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” themed tea party on Saturday, May 7, at Cooper City High School. Thank you to City staff and volunteers for helping to make it a memorable event. As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Mayor Greg Ross Cooper City

Hello Southwest Ranches,

12

We have some amazing growers right here in the Ranches and we also have some very unique products that our Ranchers raise. So, for a number of years, we have been working behind the scenes to try to pull together a farmer’s market here in the Ranches. With the success of the recent carnival in Southwest Meadow’s Preserve, located at the southwest corner of Griffin Road and Dykes Road, we were able to overcome some of the most difficult obstacles. So, now the effort to bring a Farmer’s Market to the Ranches has come to fruition. We successfully held our weekly Farmer’s Markets on Saturdays from 10:00am - 2:00pm in March and April. While we are taking a break for the Summer, they will be back this Fall. There were regional vendors that are part of a larger community that makes their way around South Florida. However, the goal is to continue to get as many Ranchers involved as possible so that we can see and enjoy all of the produce that is grown in our Town. There is no entry fee to come and shop, and there is only a nominal fee of $40 to set up a booth. Vendors who sign up for multiple weeks can receive a discount. So please join us at the Southwest Ranches Farmer’s Market again in the Fall. If you want to keep up on this and other notifications from the Ranches, you can sign up on the Town’s main web page at http://southwestranches.org. The form is located near the bottom of the main page, called “Town Talk Self-Registration Form” and be sure to click the check box indicating that you want to receive information emails from the Town regarding Town news and events. I enjoyed seeing everyone at the Farmer’s Market while stocking our kitchens with all of the local goods and produce. Enjoy your summers and I look forward to seeing you again at the Farmer’s Market in the Fall. Sincerely,

Steve Breitkreuz

Mayor - Southwest Ranches

T

he Children’s Services Council of Broward County wants to remind you - Don’t lose track of where your children are! Now more than ever, distractions can cause a tragedy in and around water. If you can’t find your child, check the water first! Remember the layers of protection: Install alarms on doors leading to water, place fencing around pools, learn CPR, and remember to always be Water Smart! Did you know drowning is the leading cause of injury and death of children ages 1 to 4 years old? The majority of children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in the water or even near the pool. Most children who drown in a home pool enter the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. Children need capable, close and constant supervision, especially toddlers who may easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area unnoticed. A dedicated “Water Watcher” can help save children from death or injury from drowning.

SIMPLE STEPS SAVES LIVES

The loss of a child is devastating to parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives and to a community. Drowning is almost always preventable by following these simple steps. Here are some guidelines to follow: 1. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an

adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic. Turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help. 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice water safety by wearing clothing in the water to experience the feeling.

Drowning Is Quick AND Silent

• Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes. • Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes. • Most children who drown are out of sight for less than 5 minutes and are usually accompanied by one or both parents whom are nearby. • Most children that die are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes. For more information about water safety, please visit cscbroward.org/safeswim and watersmartbroward.org.

From STEM Special to our afterschool STEM Club; Griffin is truly STEMtastic!

In STEM Special students learn to become critical thinkers, engineers, problem solvers, have perseverance and more. We enjoy exploring, learning, and most of all having fun! Connections are made within all disciplines including science, technology, engineering, and math. Throughout the year, we learn about the world around us by making observations, doing inquiry activities and performing experiments which are meant to engage all learners. Everything goes from investigating bubbles, pendulums, building bridges, catapults, houses, coding and more. There is never a dull moment! Our STEM Club has enjoyed engineering water-bottle rockets, coding in Minecraft Education, building VexIQ robots, coding microbits and more – our STEM Club is the place to be! We compete in various district STEM competitions and challenges throughout the year, and we just launched our water bottle rockets at the district’s Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME) competition. That was truly a blast for all! Our students and their families had so much fun! Griffin Elementary is located at 5050 SW 116th Ave. in Cooper City. Their Principal is Angie Moodliyar-Jones. SCHOOLS own. I hope to write more, it’s pretty cool!” In February, the students also participated in an Americanism Essay Contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary; “How can we support families who provide care to their veterans?” One of the 4th grade students, Valentina Menendez, was the winner of the 3rd /4th grade age group and earned a $25 Amazon Gift Card for her amazing essay contribution. Her essay will be entered in the Department of Florida’s Americanism Essay contest to compete with other contestants across the state of Florida. At a recent Pen Pal meeting, Ellen Higginbotham, an Auxiliary member & Pen Pal, presented a lesson to the students about the American Flag and what each fold means. Then the students had the opportunity to practice folding a few towels and blankets to resemble the folded flag. Writing essays and visiting with Pen Pals is not all this class has participated in. In February, these 2 teachers organized a collection of candy, coloring books, word searches, painting canvases, colored pencils, and markers that they utilize for Bingo prizes weekly. The collection was a team effort with donations coming in from many different 4th grade and Kindergarten classes. These items were donated to the Sandy Nininger Veterans State Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines for their “Day of Service & Love” project in honor of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy. The Pen Pal program was started with the idea of connecting the students with the American Legion and Veterans. It flourished into so much more than was expected. Students have learned about The American Legion, veterans, Wear RED Fridays, Patriotism and have connected with the community through each of these activities. The students and veterans all have benefitted from this program and look forward to each and every activity. Cooper City Elementary is located at 5080 SW 92nd Ave., in Cooper City. Their Principal is Terie Miranda. They can be reached at (754) 323-5200.

C

ooper City Elementary has partnered with veterans and Legion family members from the American Legion Post 321 to become Pen Pals. There are 49 Pen Pals in total…one paired with each student. Their teachers, Ms. Arguinzoni and Mrs. McHugh, are active volunteers as the Auxiliary President and Auxiliary 1st Vice President and believe in connecting the school and the Legion through meaningful activities. The Pen Pal program is in its 4th year and is very successful! The Pen Pals love the comradeship with the younger students. The 4th graders love the personal, one-on-one interaction. Each month during class, the students will write to their Pen Pals. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to strengthen their writing skills while learning more about these veterans and their family members. They ask all sorts of questions; from what it was like when they served in the military, to what their favorite football team is, to what their pet’s name is. Then, the Pen Pals will write the students back to answer all their questions and ask some questions of their own. It is a great partnership! The students have had 2 face-to-face meetings with their Pen Pals so they can see that the person they are writing to is a real-life person and not just a fictional character in a book. This Pen Pal program has been a meaningful way for students, veterans, and Legion members to make connections. Patty Weinert, who’s been a Pen Pal all 4 years, stated, “It’s a great way for a child to connect and learn about The American Legion by knowing someone who belongs to the organization”. Pen Pal George DeAngelo, Commander of American Legion Post #321 commented, “Having been a pen pal for four years, I look forward to the letters and meet and greets. It’s great hearing from the children and how they are doing in school and afterschool activities. It was so different back then for me and the activities I did. This is a great activity for all.” 4th grade student, Austin Savarese said, “ I liked it a lot. It was really cool to write to a pen pal because that is not something I would ever do on my
