Dear Readers,

Welcome to the winter issue of Sports & Activities Directory! I am sending out my best wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy holiday season, and a very joyous and prosperous New Year! We are so happy to be back publishing and getting our directory into your hands again. Our advertisers, cities and schools have been incredible with their support as we successfully relaunched this fall with our back to school issue. I think you can all relate when I say how much I appreciate getting back to a version of normal life again. Having the past 18 months off, I found a renewed energy and appreciation for my career and the value we bring to our communities. Never before, in my 19 years of publishing the Sports & Activities Directory, have I heard so much excitement about our publication and how much they missed having this resource in their homes. Thank you to each one of you who shared your excitement at seeing us in print again! We can’t do what we do without you! In the pages ahead, you will find a multitude of events for you and your families to get out and celebrate the holidays, organizations that need your help with volunteer hours and donations, school success stories, sports features and more. As many sports wrap up their fall seasons, look through the sports directory (red tabbed) for winter and spring registrations taking place now for sports such as baseball, flag football, basketball, soccer, rugby and softball. Also find the ongoing afterschool programs and activities such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, golf and tennis. Living in Florida with our beautiful weather offers a large variety of options for our children to enjoy while developing new friendships, physical and/or academic skills and overall enrichment as they challenge themselves with new activities. If you are new to the area or have just found the Sports & Activities Directory for the first time, please read through and enjoy, like our Facebook page @ SportsAndActivitiesDirectory, and visit our website www.SportsAndActivities.com to view all five of our area publications in Broward County online. All advertisements have active links to visit any or all of our advertisers’ websites to learn more about the family-friendly businesses in your community. In times like these, we are so grateful to be working closely with the many Health Care providers and facilities in and around your town. Whether you need hospitals or specialists, vaccines/boosters, urgent care, dentistry/orthodontics, vision correction, or therapy of any kind, we have a Health Directory (orange tabbed) that just keeps growing! Let us all be little more conscious of our health and more proactive in prevention of health issues. Please enjoy every moment with your family and loved ones during the holidays and every day, nothing is more important than that! My best to you,

Margot

Our apologies to the Mayor of Southwest Ranches, Steve Breitkreuz and Southwest Ranches residents, we mistakenly printed Sunshine Ranches rather than Southwest Ranches in the Mayor’s letter and in our Table of Contents in the previous issue. Having been a resident of Sunshine Ranches before Southwest Ranches was incorporated, I apparently assimilated them as one in the same in my head, which I realize is incorrect. Thank you for your understanding, this had nothing to do with what the Mayor submitted.

Hello Davie Residents,

8

I hope everyone has had a great start to the school year and remaining healthy as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s hard to imagine that the holidays are again right around the corner! As we move through the fall season and into the winter months, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has much to offer in the way of programs, activities, and community events. We begin the month of November with a tribute to our servicemen and women as we honor our American heroes at the Town of Davie’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Park on Thursday, November 11th at 10:00am. Parking at the park is limited, so a shuttle service from the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds will be available for anyone who would like to attend. The Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show and Green Fair will take place on November 20th and 21st in the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The show will feature numerous craft vendors, community performances, and children’s activities. On Saturday, December 4th Town Councilmembers and I will “flip the switch” during our Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Festival event at Bamford Sports Complex in Pine Island Park. Join us for a night of fun that will include live performances, pictures with Santa, a lighted Horse Parade, youth activities and games. The Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, home of the Davie Pro Rodeo, welcomes back the Southeastern Circuit Rodeo Finals on November 12th – 13th. This competition is something you definitely don’t want to miss! Cowboys and Cowgirls from across the Southeast United States compete over the two days for a chance to move on to the National Rodeo Finals. For ticket information, please visit www.davieprorodeo.com. The Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds holds numerous events throughout the year. Our multiuse facility is available for corporate events, car shows, craft shows, competitions, community events, concerts and festivals. We are always looking for new events to be held at the facility. If you are interested in hosting an event, please contact the Town’s special events division at (954) 797-1076. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a wide range of both traditional and non-traditional youth sports programs throughout the year. Registration for Spring Baseball will begin January 3, 2022, through February 6, 2022, for ages 3 – 13 years old. As always, remember if it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes and activities for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program or event, just call (954) 327-3941 or visit the Town of Davie newly renovated website at www.davie-fl.gov. See you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Sincerely,

Judy Paul

Mayor of Davie

Dear Residents of Cooper City,

As we approach the holiday season, I hope this message finds you and your loved ones in good health. While we continue to navigate the unpredictable environment caused by COVID-19, please continue to take care of one another by considering a vaccine if you have not received one already, washing your hands, practicing social distancing, and wearing masks when appropriate. Over the past few months, more and more residents and visitors have been heading to our sports complexes for football, baseball, soccer, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and many other activities. It has been incredibly refreshing to see so many children and adults enjoying themselves. It cannot be understated how important it is to partake in these social activities that help create new bonds and friendships. I think I can speak for all of us in realizing how much we missed these opportunities at the height of the pandemic. Your City Commission takes great pride in allocating funds and resources, so that our City staff can maintain the superior standards our residents should expect at our parks and sports complexes. A new fiscal year is underway in our City, and within the new budget we have made a commitment to building upon the pillars of our community by beautifying Cooper City. Projects will concentrate on the revitalization of our City’s major arteries and will start coming to fruition in the year ahead. Our City also remains dedicated to developing programs and activities for residents of all ages to enjoy. Our Pool and Tennis Center hosts a variety of classes each week ranging from selfdefense to yoga and Zumba. New fitness equipment, which was recently installed at the Pool and Tennis Center’s gym, has been well received and staff members always look forward to helping anyone who visits. Over at the Community Center, our active adult programs are in full swing. Residents can take part in a painting group, book club, or enjoy a movie matinee every Thursday. Of course, there are always special events organized by our Recreation Department. One of my favorite events of the year, “Light Up Cooper City,” is right around the corner. This special holiday occasion will be held on the evening of Friday, December 3. Be there as Memorial Park, located between Cooper City Hall and the Community Center, comes to light with beautiful colors and decorations. And, the holiday fun does not end there. Starting November 10, Cooper City residents can enter the “Holiday Home Decorating Contest,” which will run through the first week of December. Then, on November 17, residents can begin registering for “Brunch with Santa” at the Community Center. This event is open to children in third grade or younger. Our city’s festive calendar also includes a holiday movie at Memorial Park on December 10. Please save these dates and make sure to enjoy all of the family fun! You can find information on each of our holiday events and much more at www.CooperCityFL.org/Calendar. As we prepare to gather with family and friends during the holidays, please keep in mind all of the brave men and women of our armed forces who will not be home with their loved ones during this joyous season. In honor of all those who have served our country, Cooper City will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony at Memorial Park on November 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On behalf of the City Commission, I wish you and yours a very safe and happy holiday season and we hope to see you at city events in the weeks ahead. As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Greg Ross

Dear Southwest Ranches Readers,

We are proud of the unique elements of Southwest Ranches. The commitment to open space and room for animals of all kinds allows our residents to enjoy a more basic and rural lifestyle. However, we are also part of the larger community, and I am very proud of how our Town participated in the recent September 11th Commemoration, recognizing 20 years since this difficult day. The September 11th Commemoration was a somber event, but it was also a poignant one that was driven by the vision of our residents. Southwest Ranches resident Louis Gregory first proposed the idea to me. Another resident, George Morris, donated his time and talents to prepare the location and install the memorial plaque pictured on this page. Our administration went far beyond what they were asked to do to pull together all of the elements of the event to make it successful. On a day like this, having not had an event like this in the past, we were not sure of the level of participation from our residents. However, I am proud to say that we had strong support on the day of the event. We live in a wonderful place. I also want to thank Broward County School Board member, Donna Korn, for joining us as at the Commemoration. Finally, I want to thank all the members of the Town Council for their thoughtful comments and participation in the event. September 11th is an important day in our history and a strong reminder that we cannot take our freedoms for granted. We never know what sacrifice we will be called on to make on any given day. It is also a reminder of just how resilient our country and communities are. As we prepared for this event, I was reminded that those freshmen heading off to college did not experience this event. It occurred before they were born. So, it is up to us and our community to have these types of events to continue to pass on the importance of defending and protecting our freedoms. In the Ranches, we tend to be very independent individuals that, for the most part, want to build our own future. I was so very pleased and proud to see us all come together for this event in which we all have a stake. Should you ever have any questions about Southwest Ranches or wish to contact me, my number is (954) 296-6018. I welcome the opportunity to hear from you. We live in a very special place and always welcome others that share the desire for a simpler, more rural, lifestyle.

Sincerely,

Steve Breitkreuz Mayor - Southwest Ranches

By Marcos Ritter

I

t was in an obscure little park in Cooper City called Forest Lake where I met a small band of beautiful ladies playing pickleball. It was the summer before the pandemic (2019). I barely knew the game and they seemed new at it themselves, although they were laughing and having fun as they chased balls all over the court. It was weeks later when I ran into one of them at Twin Lakes Pools and asked her how I knew her. Once she got over the initial “…Hey buddy, I am married…” fear, we figured out it was from the pickleball courts. Since then, a friendship has developed with Paula Tangora as well as dozens of other pickleball players in Cooper City. That little band of 6 pickleball players began to grow. Within a few months, husbands, children, nieces, and nephews started to play. They invited other friends, aunts, uncles, sisters, and brothers to play. We soon outgrew those two little courts at Forest Lake. But we kept on showing up because it was there where we got to see our new friends and even celebrate birthdays together. We knew we needed more courts. That is when we saw an abandoned hockey rink in the Suellen H. Fardelmann Cooper City Sports Complex. We knew we could build pickleball courts there. “LET’S GO TO THE CITY,” we said, and our mission was set. We organized, we petitioned, and we went to budget meetings. The women insisted politely on being heard. So, the city put up 4 nets and painted some lines. We were grateful, but not fully satisfied. Nevertheless, we took care of those courts. Charlie Bruno, who is an amazing man, put up dividers to help with the loose balls. Together, we would come out with our blowers and clean

the courts. In short, we made the best out of what the city was able to give us. In the middle of the pandemic when everything was shutting down, we gave it one more shot. We organized once again, designed some better courts, and gave some beautiful speeches at the commissioners’ meetings. This is where with kindness, mutual respect, and a selfless desire to improve your community, government and citizens come together. Under the leadership of Mayor Greg Ross and the city commissioners, the City of Cooper City built the best pickleball courts in Broward County. Since then, the government officials have come out and played with us. They have seen our group grow to over 120 players. We have had parties together, gone out on boats, traveled, and helped each other in many ways. We have kept it open play to all who want to come. We encourage newbies, and I personally have taught at least 30 people how to play the game (I am not an instructor). Our group has participated in tournaments and has won GOLD, SILVER, AND BRONZE MEDALS in all categories: Women’s Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. But, the best part of what defines us is the kindness and love we have for each other and the alliance we have forged with the city to keep and maintain the courts. Charlie and I and the others who now join us, blow, sweep, and help clean the courts because we believe that when government and citizens work together, GREAT THINGS COME OF IT. The Cooper City pickleball courts are located at Forest Lake Park, 5700 SW 113th Avenue (2 courts), and Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex at 10300 Stirling Road (6 courts) .

SCHOOLS work. Set high but achievable expectations. Express confidence in your child. Remind them to view learning as continuous so that they develop a growth mindset (rather than a fixed mindset). And ask their teachers for suggestions on how to reestablish good habits. Focus on time management. For many students, the chaos of last school year led to many bad habits. Get your child back on track with a few best practices: planner use, planning out every homework session so that they minimize wasted time, good homework routines and the use of timers and reminders. This keeps your child on track and deters procrastination. It can also help with the child who avoids homework by simplifying what they have to do. Understandably, many children have experienced negative feelings about school in the last year and a half. This coming school year is likely to be a year of refocusing and rebuilding. If your child seemed unmotivated at the end of the last school year and their grades showed the same, call Huntington. We can investigate the problem and identify exactly what is going on, then develop a customized program of instruction. Our approach is effective and will help your student turn things around quickly! Call 1-800 CAN LEARN today.

T

he pandemic took a toll on many students and the current reality is many who have fallen behind and lost motivation. Falling grades are problematic, but an even bigger issue is when your child seems uninterested in turning things around. What can you do to help your child who seems apathetic about school and whose As have dwindled to Cs? Here are several tips: Have an open conversation. Without judgment or frustration, talk with your child about what they’re feeling. When did problems start? What subjects have been especially difficult? Let your child know that you want them to find success in school, but more importantly, you want them to feel good about themselves going into this new year. Discuss the importance of effort. Sometimes, school is difficult. This past year proved that things can change suddenly, and for many students, that’s not ideal. Your child needs the reminder that hard things require significant effort. Not every subject comes easy and your child might not always like what they learn. But in the end, the achievement is worth the struggle. Tell your child to take pride in their accomplishments. Make sure your child is challenged. Remote learning was fraught with problems and led to not only a loss of skills for many students, but also a loss of interest. As you head into this new school year, make sure your child spends time setting goals and laying out the steps to achieve those goals. Talk about what aspects of the school year are exciting and what they are hoping to learn and do during this new year. Sometimes, a little effort toward thinking about these things helps students refocus. Work to rebuild their academic stamina. With many students learning remotely for much or all of last school year, chances are high that your child might have lost some of their fortitude to study and persist through challenging school

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is excited to announce the names of 41 Semifinalists to be considered for a National Merit Scholarship award in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalists standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning a Merit Scholar title. High school juniors entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. ilver Ridge Panthers are back together stronger than ever. As we began this school year, we welcomed 966 children back to campus. Our 99 staff members look forward to seeing the smiling faces daily. As we returned to full capacity this school year, we have a focus on the Social Emotional well-being of each child. Every day at school we have a moment of reflection followed by an SEL lesson. Most of our lessons are designed to build character in children and adults. The lessons include things like never giving up, making new friends, being a good friend, believing in yourself along with a variety of other topics that build us up each morning. We want to make sure that our kids have a great day every day, because we know that it is a choice to feel the way we feel. Throughout the school year, we will also work hard to make up for any

summer of 2022. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 220 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specific criteria. In addition, about 180 competitive public and private colleges and universities will finance 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. National Merit Scholarship winners for 2022 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 362,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title. lost learning last year. As spectacular as our teachers were last year, we still had some learning losses. This year our focus in reading and math is to make up for any lost time and get us back on track. Students participate in many academic programs both in person and online to help us with this goal. If anyone would like to take part in the magic at SRE as a volunteer, we can always use great role models. We are encouraging parent volunteers this year. We have many opportunities to volunteer that can be found at https://silverridge.ptboard.com/home. In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself

to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-nine years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the yearround effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 185 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 8,900 families (approximately 27,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time and beyond. Distribution

sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Donate food for our volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!
