Dear Readers,

Happy holiday season to you all, it’s hard to believe we are here again already! Despite the craziness that often comes with the season, it still remains—in my eyes—the most enjoyable time of the year in South Florida. As hurricane season comes to an end and the humidity subsides, the cooler temperatures seem to bring our communities to life again, as we gather at outdoor events and extra-curricular activities. In 2001, my late husband and I moved our family of four to Cooper City in hopes of finding a great community in which to raise our two children. As we went through the years, we would seek out programs to engage in with our little ones—they learned to swim, dance, play soccer, chess, and much more. My husband and I coached their sports teams and I took up Martial Arts with them. My daughter found a love for music and cooking, while my son joined the Civil Air Patrol and even learned to fly planes! When we weren’t taking part in organized sports or events, we would enjoy long walks and picnics at some of our favorite parks in Davie—such as Robins Park, Treetops and Wolf Lake Park—and one day a week we’d take a drive east and spend the day at the beach. We most definitely took advantage of the area in which we live and all that it had to offer; it was everything we were looking for and more. This year we celebrated my daughters 21st birthday, and as a gift, I created a cookbook filled with recipes from her Dad and other family members, with photos from over the years. The 100+ hour project turned into a 72-page book and a true labor of love. Emotions began to flow as I sat up at silly o’clock in the morning, going through pictures and remembering tender moments, funny times and milestones. As I spent hours upon hours sifting through thousands of photos and compiling the book, I realized just how grateful I was that we had been participants in life, rather than spectators. We are extremely blessed to have so many great events, sports, clubs and activities in our community all year round. The City of Cooper City and the Town of Davie Parks and Recreation departments do an incredible job of hosting and putting together many diverse, fun events that bring families together. We have beautiful parks with nature paths in which to meander and an enviable coastline only a short ride away. When it all comes down to the bottom line, family is the most valuable thing you have, kids grow and the dynamics change and before you know it you find yourself reflecting on those precious moments. Take advantage of every opportunity you have to build memories, because you never know—one day you just might need them to create a 72-page cookbook at silly o’clock in the morning, for your daughters 21st! Happy holidays from your Sports & Activities Team—from our families to yours. We hope that you thoroughly enjoy the season and make some beautiful memories along the way.

My very best to you,

Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

10

I cannot believe that we are in the middle of autumn and that winter is right around the corner—time sure flies when you’re having fun! As always, the Town of Davie has a fantastic lineup of special events and programs for the residents of Davie to enjoy. Join us in Cowboy Town during the annual Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo, produced by the Weekley Brothers, as they return once again to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds from Thursday, November 8th through Saturday, November 10th. The rodeo is a family friendly event that features bull riding, team roping, barrel racing and more! On Sunday, November 11th, we will host our annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Davie, at Veterans Park. The event will begin at 10:00am, as we honor all those who have served in our armed forces. On November 17th and 18th, the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds will play host to the annual Holiday Craft Show and Green Fair from 9:00am to 4:00pm each day. Over 100 local artists and vendors will be on display throughout the two-day show. This event is an excellent opportunity to get your holiday shopping done early! The month of December welcomes two great family events in the heart of downtown Davie. Join us at Town Hall on Saturday, December 1st, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, for the Annual Lighting of the Greens and Music Under the Stars event. The event will kick off with the Lighted Horse Parade and then we will “flip the switch” to turn on thousands of holiday lights and lighted displays. As always, we invite local schools, community groups and families to participate in the Holiday Decorating Contest by decorating a Christmas tree, menorah or kinara at Town Hall; winners from the Holiday Decorating Contest will be announced during the event. Following the lighting of Town Hall, local musicians and youth performers will sing and perform holiday classics. On Saturday, December 10th, our annual Holiday Snow Play event will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Over 20 tons of snow will fall in the arena—so bring the kids to play! There will be a petting farm, bounce houses, youth games and activities for all; Santa will also be arriving in a Town of Davie Fire Truck! On Sunday, January 20th, we will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Town Hall during a ceremony and celebration that will include poetry, readings, and local guest speakers. If you have any questions about our events or would like to become a partner or sponsor, please contact our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department at (954) 797-1153. For other recreational programs and activities, please look through the Sports & Activities Directory. The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers something for our residents of all ages. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on the Town’s Parks and Recreation Facebook page.

I look forward to leading Cooper City with a commission who truly holds the best intentions for our residents as a priority. Thank you to all who performed your civic duty and voted your conscience on local, state and federal issues. Your votes counted and your voices were heard. The fall/winter season in Cooper City brings with it a plethora of exciting community events and public ceremonies for our residents to enjoy. Our third annual Veterans Day Observance will take place on Sunday, November 11th, in Memorial Park, at 11:00 AM. On this day, we pay homage to those who have paid for our freedom. ccording to FeedingAmerica.org, 1 in 8 people are food insecure and 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger translating to 74,730 children that go to bed hungry every night right here in South Florida. 25% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. This is why it is essential that community organizations such as Harvest Drive Florida get involved In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-six years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need through Harvest Drive. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

Another distinctive characteristic of Harvest Drive is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County for Thanksgiving. Distribution sites will be set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

EVENTS

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranches Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 25 | November 2018 - Januar y 2019

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, throughout last year they made an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our local schools who are hungry. They also start each school year off by providing well stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies.

J

oseph Kelljchian was loved and admired by many people. Larger than life, he was considered a true Renaissance man. The multitude of things that he accomplished, as well as the number of people that he helped, is nothing short of amazing. As an unschooled man, Joe was only able to complete the seventh grade. After which, he began working to help support his mother and sister. Paper boy, hotel cabana boy, auto repairman, business man—you name it, he did it. Joe did anything and everything to not only get by, but to also live life to the fullest. He made friends in all arenas of life, learning different trades along the way. He loved the Everglades and spent much of his time there as a young man. He trapped poisonous snakes for someone who created hundreds of anti-venoms. He learned the art of beekeeping, became skilled in rodeo, and even tamed horses. Joe was introduced to the martial arts as a teenager; it became a love that would last throughout his entire life. He also had a friend that became his partner in a plumbing business, and although he was never a plumber, he did so well that he became president of the Florida Plumber’s Association. He accomplished all of this while being a loving husband and father of four. It was sometime during these years that Joe decided to devote his work time to the art that he loved most¬—karate. In the 1970’s he began teaching in Cooper City, developing such a loyal and loving following that many of his original students are still teaching and training under what later became his style of karate—the USA Goju Federation. While taking care of his wife and children, he also found time to build a karate family; one which he guided and mentored to an unparalleled degree. When asked what he did for a living, he would reply, “I make real men and real women.” Joe embraced and taught the Samurai virtues of honor, loyalty, justice, wisdom and compassion—living life by the maxim: “Be sorry for what you did, not what you didn’t do.” To this end, he did anything and everything to lead a fulfilling life.

Adding to the wide-ranging list of his achievements, he became a private pilot, was a certified scuba diver, did skydiving and traveled extensively all over the world. His rich life experiences were part of what made him such an amazing parent and teacher. His karate came into play during the thirty-year period he spent as a bodyguard. While taking care of many people— famous and otherwise—he essentially utilized the skills that he taught in the dojo. Having worked for a particular family for many nears, he came to love them as his own. He would have given his life to protect the people he loved, and would often tell us, “If you find yourself in trouble in a foreign country, call me. I will come and get you.” The crazy thing was that he meant it. Realizing that he had even more knowledge to learn and give, he attended writing workshops and authored five books. Most likely never diagnosed as a dyslexic, Joe was ashamed at how difficult he found reading to be. One of his favorite directives, however, was “adapt and overcome,” and that’s just what Joe did—utilizing first a tape recorder, and then a computer program to dictate his books. Joe’s talents transcended the limits. He loved the arts—writing poetry, country music, and singing as well. He even went to Nashville as a young man and recorded two songs. As a seasoned creator, he also crafted beautiful weapons, of which his students feel extremely privileged to own. Joe was iconic for a number of his positive attributes, but most of all, he embodied love; he loved with his entire being. He counseled his students to follow their hearts and dreams, and to take risks. He looked at life as one great big adventure, taking those of us fortunate enough to be close to him along for the ride. He was so many things to so many of us, and while he has left us to begin his next great adventure, we will be here loving him and missing him until we meet again. Master Kelljchian’s legacy lives on through GoJu Karate and the senseis that he mentored. Classes are available to your family in Davie and Cooper City. More information can be found in the Sports Directory, under Martial Arts, in this issue.

n October of 2018, Weston-based, Okapi Wanderers RFC will commence their 5th season in the Florida Rugby Union, with teams in 9 divisions. As the only rugby club in Broward County to offer opportunities for all ages—from U7 to Old Boys—as well as a family-friendly environment, Okapi Wanderers is quickly becoming South Florida’s home for rugby! From their humble beginnings in a local park—with just 30 kids and a handful of parents—Okapi Wanderers has grown to become one of the largest rugby clubs in the United States, in just four years. During its short time, Okapi Wanderers has become eminently known for promoting players’ development and welfare—with 26 certified coaches, a tireless team of parents, volunteers and support from local businesses, Okapi Wanderers RFC has been able to support both youth and men’s players as they follow their dreams. In the past year, several Okapi alumni have moved on to successfully pursue their dreams through the sport: Former HS Captain, Tomas Gallo, is currently playing in London, UK for one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in the world, London Welsh; while men’s team players, Stephen Sheehan and Alex Tucci both had spells in Ireland playing for Gorey, with Tucci going on to sign a professional Major League Rugby contract with the Utah Warriors. Okapi Wanderers’ list of achievements from the 2017-18 season is quite impressive—they became the first club in Florida Rugby Union

history to compete in every division of the Youth State Finals, with both their U17 and U19 teams winning State Championships. The club also hosted the inaugural Weston Challenge Cup, which included teams throughout Florida and the Bahamas. Okapi emerged the winners of the U10, U12, U14 and U16 competitions and also broke new territory last year by creating an all-Star Middle School team—the Florida Jaguares¬—to compete in USA Rugby’s Regional Championship Tournament, in which players from clubs across the state were invited to join, with great success; the Jaguares won the tournament, scoring 172 points and conceding only 5. Whilst being competitive and playing a high standard of rugby is important, instilling core rugby values of integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect into everything the club does is the topmost priority. Sleep Hygiene 101 By Dr. Myriam Padron and Dr. David Yudell

D

id you know that we spend up to 1/3rd of our life sleeping? Sleep is an extremely important part of our everyday life as it lets the brain recharge. Maintaining a healthy sleeping schedule allows us to learn and retain information more easily. In addition, healthy sleep cycles improve concentration, productivity, and emotional/social functioning. Biologically, sleep even enhances immune function as cells have time to repair themselves. How much sleep do we need? It is recommended that infants receive 1620 hours of sleep, while school age children receive 10-11 hours. As we age we may need a little less sleep, for example teenagers can function on 9-10 hours of sleep while adults can get by with 7.5-8 hours of sleep. However, too little sleep can lead to a variety of side effects including: irritability, depressed mood, decreased motivation, academic issues, increased risk of heart disease, and increased stress. For children, sleep deprivation can lead to lower GPAs, difficulties concentrating, decreased athletic performance, increased rates of depression/anxiety, and decreased immune system functioning. The quality and quantity of our sleep can vary. Is your child having trouble sleeping? Here are some tips that can help your kids fall and stay asleep, while remaining alert and well rested throughout the day. • Enforce a consistent bed time on a nightly basis - This will take time and effort! • Sit quietly before bed with no excessive stimulation – Remove all electronics • Allow them to read a book or engage in relaxation routine – Soft music, meditation.

• •

Avoid sweets or food with caffeine at least 3 hours prior to bedtime Let them use their bed only for sleep - Do not work, eat, or do anything productive in bed • Take a warm bath one hour before bed • Keep a sleep diary to monitor sleep cycles • Make sure their bedroom is comfortable – air conditioning / fan / noise / intrusive lights • Restrict napping • Monitor their diet and provide regular exercise opportunities If they continue to struggle to fall asleep for more than 20 minutes, teach them to get out of bed! The goal is to avoid associating bedtime with frustration. When they get out of bed, have them read a book, meditate, or engage in an activity that produces a low level of stimulation. When they start to tire, the goal is to get back into bed. If this pattern is repeated for several days it should work to create new habits that encourage them to sleep. Following these steps may improve not only their sleep but also how they feel throughout the day. The goal is to get them well-rested and energized! Sometimes satisfying sleep can be hard to achieve, but it starts with slowly developing healthy sleep habits one step at a time. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. FAMILY HEALTH healthcare professionals with specific training and experience in the assessment and management of concussions. The sports medicine physicians at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital are frequently involved in the care of patients with concussions and are specifically trained to provide care along the continuum of concussion from management of the acute injury to return-to-play decisions. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic was developed as a multi-disciplinary center for pediatric patients with TBI that streamlines access to care to subspecialties including neurology, neuropsychology, and vestibular therapy in addition to sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Is there anything an athlete can do to prevent concussions? Strengthening the neck musculature has been shown to decrease the risk of concussions. Currently, there is no conclusive evidence that helmets, mouthguards or headbands can prevent concussions. Do dancers require specialized care after trauma or for overuse injuries? Dancers and performing artists speak a sport specific language and may require specialized treatment that takes into account their activity. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s pediatric sports medicine program [U18] Sports Medicine developed a Performing Arts and Dance Medicine program centered around getting these athletes back into the studio in an expedited fashion that doesn’t involve only rest. With former company physicians from the Boston Ballet, our team speaks the language which helps quickly and accurately make the diagnosis and get the appropriate treatment plan started. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is proud to announce that for the 5th time its Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery was nationally ranked by US News and World Report among the best hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics in the country. We sat down with Dr. Matthew Fazekas, FAAP, CAQSM, a pediatric sports medicine and concussion specialist to discuss current trends in pediatric orthopaedics. Why is it so important that kids see a pediatric orthopaedic specialist? Kids are not little adults. They have open growth plates and normal developmental changes that may be occurring during the course of treating an injury. Seeing a specialist with training focused on the pediatric athlete can get them back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Who is best qualified to take care of young athletes who suffer a concussion? Concussions may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, or neck or by an indirect blow elsewhere on the body with an impulsive rotational force transmitted to the brain. This impact results in the rapid onset of impaired neurologic function that resolves on its own. The resolution of symptoms typically follows a sequential course. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.7 million individuals sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI in the United States every year. Individuals may suffer multiple traumatic events, especially if playing contact sports. The annual incidence of sports-related concussions in the United States is estimated between 1.6 and 3.8 million. Concussions occur in all sports; the majority of concussions occurring in organized sports are sustained in football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. The care of athletes with sports-related concussions is ideally performed by

Ah, the excitement of going back to school! New

classrooms, new teachers, new friends and classmates… not to mention new back packs, supplies, shoes and uniforms. For many children, the latter would not be possible, were it not for the Broward County Back to School Extravaganza. And this year, over 7,500 students benefited. $35.00 is all that is needed to outfit a child with what they need to start the school year off on the right foot. For the eighth year, the Children’s Services Council issued a challenge grant to fund back-to-school supplies for students identified by School Board Social Workers and community partners as being economically disadvantaged. Dozens of foundations, corporations, non-profits and individuals stepped up to provide appropriate funding and logistical support to ensure the success of the campaign. Four distribution events took place over two weekends: on July 28th at New Renaissance Middle School and Dillard High School, and on August 4th at Blanche Ely High School and Hallandale High School. As thousands of people lined-up to participate long before the gates opened at each venue, it was clear that the need is great and that events such as these are badly needed to ensure children

begin their school in the best of circumstances. “The kids are very happy and we are very thankful for everything that you are doing for the families here today,” said a father participant at Hallandale’s event with his wife and four children. “This is a great event. I particularly appreciate the new shoes and the book distribution,” said another parent at Ely. Hundreds of volunteers ensured smooth operations throughout. Robust resource fairs added to each family’s ability to receive materials, information and resources, including immunizations, eye exams, KidCare insurance and much more. DJ’s, face painting, games and snacks provided for a carnival like atmosphere, fun for the whole family. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies were also instrumental in ensuring friendly but effective crowd control support and overall smooth operations. The work of the Back to School Extravaganza committee will begin again early in the new year, as we look to continue making the beginning of the school year an exciting and rewarding time for all children. lamingo Elementary School is proud to have been a pilot school several years ago, for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The teachers taught lessons that focused on self-management, self- awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making; the students enjoyed hearing literature being read aloud that focused on these competencies. This year, Flamingo Elementary is excited to be utilizing a Social Emotional Curriculum—Sanford Harmony—in all classes. Sanford Harmony is a free researchbased curriculum provided to the School Board of Broward County, FL, by Nova Southeastern University. There are several exciting things about this curriculum: students are able to learn positive traits, it is easy to implement for teachers, and it covers all of the social-emotional competencies. Each teacher—from kindergarten through fifth grade¬—will receive a kit that includes a Meet-Up and Buddy Up Guide, Quick Connection cards, a teacher’s manual with lessons and activities, story books, games, and a puppet. The students will be able to learn about the social-emotional competencies through a puppet named “Z”. By conducting these lessons on a daily and weekly basis, classrooms will transform into a place where students will feel empowered to communicate, cooperate, connect, embrace diversity, resolve conflict, and build healthy relationships. SEL also takes place through district-wide initiatives, such as Peace Day and Start with Hello Week. On Friday, September 21, 2018 students in all grade levels were able to dress up in “peace-themed” or white clothing—representing peace. They were also able to create beautiful works of art with chalk to express their personal expression of peace throughout our campus. Start with Hello Week was September 24-28th, 2018 and all students in grades second through fifth attended an assembly where they learned about the Sandy Hook

O

Promise campaign to end social isolation. Students learned the three easy steps of: 1 – See Someone Alone, 2 – Reach Out and Help, 3 – Start with Hello. Flamingo Elementary will continue to incorporate Start with Hello week initiatives with help from Student Council and Safety Patrols, to ensure that all students feel connected. SEL is an imperative component in educating today’s children. At Flamingo, we believe in educating the whole child. SEL curriculums—such as Sanford Harmony and Start with Hello—allow our students to develop their important life skills while in a safe and supportive school environment.

PIONEER STUDENTS JOIN THE WORKFORCE WITHIN A VIRTUAL ECONOMY

n September 7th, a group of well-dressed students learned about what it’s like to be in the professional world. Virtual Enterprise students—also known as Cape Kids—had to choose a career path for their eighth grade class, Digital Info Tech. In order to help make that decision, professionals from different fields spoke to students about their careers. Graphic design, human resources, administration, marketing, accounting and finance were the careers represented. “I learned more about human resources itself and what they deal with every day from the professionals,” said Noy Levi. Not long after Career Day, VE students prepared resumes, cover letters, and applied for positions within their virtual company. “I’m excited that my students get this real-world experience,” said Mrs. Ferreira.

By Lucas Livachof

During the first week of October, students sat for job interviews with people from the community, as well as Pioneer’s administration and guidance team. “I wasn’t sure what to expect from the interview,” said Kennedy Lerner. “It was more like a conversation, so I felt better about it afterwards.” Kennedy was hired to be the CEO. On Friday, October 6th, students celebrated their job placements with a popcorn and board games party. At the start of the year, VE-JV students brainstormed for a product or service that they could sell virtually and decided on what type of business ownership would be best for their company. Now that the students have been hired, they will start doing business with other schools in the Virtual Enterprise International program—a world-wide program with schools located anywhere from South Korea to California.

e had many holiday happenings to look forward to this past October, at Griffin Elementary. For instance, there was a Fall Parade that took place on Halloween, where our students dressed in costumes based on a theme. This year, we invited Pioneer Middle School’s band to lead our parade. The band and students paraded in the front of the school, where parents and staff enjoyed the sights. Two different grade levels paraded at a time, giving students the opportunity to be both participants and spectators in the parade. In November, we have a food drive for families in need within our community and families in need at our sister school, Watkins Elementary. Our PTA collects donations from the students and items are arranged so that each family receiving a holiday

decorated box has the fixings for a great holiday dinner, with plenty of leftovers! December brings our December Dash, hosted by our P.E. teacher, Mrs. Betsy Norrell. The students will ‘dash’ around the school grounds for half a mile in the primary grades and a mile for the intermediate grades. The activity begins with a visit from our local Cooper City Fire Department; when the truck arrives, a special guest (Santa!) says hello and kicks things off! We also have a gift collection for the holidays. Students choose a child from our holiday tree and they bring a new, unwrapped gift for that child. We then come together as a community and wrap the presents. They are then delivered to our families in need from our school and our sister school. Griffin students are caring and generous throughout the year—especially during the holidays!

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS AT NOVA INSPIRE STUDENT SUCCESS

H

igh school can be an exciting time of learning and growth for teens, but it can also prove to be a challenging and difficult time for those who do not have strong support systems at home. In order to make sure that all students receive adequate support both academically and personally, Nova High School has implemented several extracurricular programs aimed at providing quality mentorship opportunities inside and outside of school. Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (MTL), for instance, is a district-created peer-to-peer mentoring and student leadership program that serves youth who are at-risk for not graduating and/or remaining in school. The program aims to decrease dropout rates, particularly among minority males, to ensure successful school graduation. MTL has five major objectives: mentoring, family involvement, community support, incentives and leadership, and academic achievement. Throughout the school year, mentors aid their mentees with life issues, academics, sports and more. Nova’s MTL currently has about 315 students enrolled in the program—with 177 of those students possessing a weighted GPA of a 3.0; out of those 177 students, 127 have a weighted GPA of a 3.5 or higher. Aside from keeping students on track academically, the club also serves as a place for students to shine interpersonally. MTL club sponsor Errol Forbes said, “MTL is important because it allows students the opportunity to step-up and be leaders. Not all students will ever have the opportunity to lead. Here, mentors are looked at as leaders. Mentees that are excelling will also have the opportunities to lead and become Mentors in Training.

Leaders are recognized by their uniforms and are treated as such. Mentors are given the opportunity to plan activities and take part in leadership events.” The club’s annual MTL vs. Faculty basketball game, for example, brings students and staff together to not only raise funds for the program, but also to build teamwork skills. Last year, the game raised almost $3,000 for the program, and a portion of the proceeds were donated to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School relief efforts. “Events are based on the collaboration of both mentee and their mentors. Without the idea of looking out for one another, this organization would not be as successful as it is today. What makes this powerful is the respect each student has for each other,” Forbes added. Nova doesn’t just promote brotherhood and leadership through MTL, but also patience, kindness, and encouragement through Sisters with a Purpose (SWAP)—another Nova mentorship club aimed at helping young females prepare themselves for life after high school. By placing an emphasis on values like respect, academics and family values, SWAP members are given a unique opportunity to grow and blossom into mature, productive women. Through events like Denim and Pearls and the MTL Gentlemen’s Night, the ladies of SWAP get to exhibit their newfound etiquette and communication skills while creating positive, long-lasting relationships with one another. These clubs are just a few of many that Nova has to offer—providing students with mentorship experiences in order to create a positive, safe and enriched school climate and environment.

e have so many reasons to celebrate at Nova Blanche Forman Elementary. Our educators continue to push the boundaries of education and, in turn, have highly motivated, determined, and energized students. We are extremely proud of all of our Nova Blanche educators. Ms. Pam Brown was recently named Art Teacher of the Year by the state of Florida! We are so fortunate to have her leading our art program, here at Nova Blanche. Also, teachers nominated Ms. Attiya Batool as the 2018-19 Teacher of the Year and Mr. Oussama Naami as the 2018-19 School-Related Employee of the Year. We are very proud of these educators and all of the Nova Blanche faculty and staff! We closed out the month of September with Peace Week and a campaign inspired by the Sandy Hook Initiative, entitled “Start with Hello.” Our School Counselor, Ms. Aneysha James, and Art Teacher, Ms. Pam Brown, organized a beautiful week of events and presented vital information for our students during Peace Week. We are very proud of our students for exhibiting kindness and empathy towards others. Furthermore, we sincerely enjoyed having Principal Russell Schwartz read and talk to students in every classroom at the start of this year. Principal Schwartz let students know how important they are and how we want them to be happy and successful. The principal also read some very powerful stories to each class. Kindergarten and first grade

got to hear the story “Wonder,” while the second and third grade classes, heard “The Dot.” Finally, in the fourth and fifth grade classes he read “After the Fall,” which is the story of how Humpty Dumpty got back up again. Each story highlights the way we feel about our Nova students—each student is special, has unique talents, and is encouraged to never give up. In addition, we have also launched a new weekly challenge to spark interest in geography and world cultures; the challenge is called “Where in the World is Mr. Schwartz,” and it highlights a different country each week. During the segment recorded with a green screen, Mr. Schwartz provides country specific clues that help lead students to guess where he is located. Our school is very fortunate to have families who volunteer countless hours for the betterment of our school and students. We take immense pride in giving back to our community—a community that continually strives to help make us our best. “We Care” is a program that has been at Nova Blanche Forman for many years and it is one that organizes our efforts towards providing holiday meals for families. With the generosity of our educators, volunteers, and families, we are able to provide more than 25 Thanksgiving meals and over 50 Christmas/Hanukkah gift bags for Nova Blanche Forman students. Don’t forget to follow us on social media, using @NBFelem on both Twitter and Instagram. Have a wonderful holiday season!!!

ccording to the website latinosinaction.org, Latinos In Action (LIA) offers an asset-based approach to bridging the graduation and opportunity gap for Latino students, working from within the educational system to create positive change. The program operates as a year-long elective course taught by highly qualified teachers—grades 6 through 12—with the goal of empowering Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through college and career readiness. Third grader, Ari Levy added, “I am looking forward to building the robots and setting up the hubs.” Students will be using teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership skills to design and build a robot that will play against other teams in this fun and challenging competition. They will work together to complete different tasks—such as using their robot to move items to specific areas and moving their robot through a course. At the Vex Robotics Competition, the team will be working collaboratively against other teams to earn points. Whether the students are “driving” the robot or using their “mad programming skills”, the competition is sure to be loads of fun!

students to our school to implement this approach. Four lucky students have already benefitted from this program. One student, named Dennis, loves when his mentor comes to work with him during math class. “He helps me when I don’t know what to do and explains it to me in Spanish and English. He is kind and patient,” said Dennis. Another student, Luna, likes when her mentor helps as well. Luna feels as though her mentor is quite amicable and enjoys speaking with her; students Yessina and Keyli share the same mentor as Luna, as this program is in popular demand. The mentor spends 30 minutes helping both girls translate math word problems to English. This is a great learning experience for both the high school students and elementary students.
