Dear Readers,

As the temperatures are starting to rise and the days are becoming longer, it’s safe to assume that we’re all anticipating the slightly more relaxed, slower paced, lazy days of summer. Life is more mellow when we don’t have the stresses of homework assignments, time constraints and sleep deprivation. Summer is the perfect time for catching up on some much needed rest, recreation and tons of FUN! We’re springing into action with this issue of Sports & Activities Directory, our biggest and most anticipated issue of the year, the summer camp issue! Take some time to look through the directory with your child and find out what they might like to try this summer. Inside our pages, you will find unique programs for every age, from tot to teen! There are specialty camps for the athlete, dancer, animal lover, brainiac and more. Perhaps your child would like to try their hand at something new, or maybe they would prefer to enjoy the social aspect of summer camp instead. Either way, one thing is certain, your child will be making new friends and building memories that will last a lifetime. Although the summer heat in Florida can seem overbearing to some (even the outdoorsy type), I personally tend to get a little stir crazy if I don’t get some kind of outdoor activities in throughout the week. A few summers ago, I gave up trying to combat the elements, and instead learned to work with them and embrace them. For me, being in, on or around the water is a must. Whether it be a fun boat ride, a chartered fishing trip, or maybe cruising the Intracoastal via water taxi (which can be a great way of getting around in Fort Lauderdale while seeing the spectacular views, I might add), there’s no shortage of water activities to be enjoyed by all. A short car ride can transport you to our incredible coastline, where you can enjoy miles upon miles of fine white sand, a warm gentle breeze, a dip of the toes or complete immersion into our crystal clear ocean. My personal favorite water activity is clambering onto a paddleboard or kayak for a couple of hours and getting a little exercise in while earning my lunch! Something as simple as a family fun day at the pool can be as active or as lazy as you make it. Yep, South Florida can still be paradise, even in the summer months! As long as there’s water, there’s an opportunity to keep your cool. Speaking of water, let’s not forget the huge safety factor that needs to be addressed at all times. In South Florida, our children are exposed to water almost everywhere, with canals, lakes, pools in our backyards, pools in our neighbors’ backyards, and the nearby ocean. Therefore, teaching our children and their caregivers water safety and swimming skills is paramount. Please take a look through our directory and find swimming lessons near you; sign your children up for the most important lessons that they are likely to ever learn. As we close out the 2019 school year, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of our wonderful educators out there! Thank you for not only nurturing our young ones, but for teaching them the skills necessary for their advancement as well. Celebrating the academic accomplishments of the past year can be a joyous occasion, however, it is also a great opportunity for us to all slow down and appreciate quality time with our families, without the stresses of homework and deadlines. A big shout out goes to my co-worker, Kim Kadel, for earning the title of “2019 Coral Springs Small Business Leader of the Year!” Kim is the publisher of Sports & Activities Directory for Weston and Coral Springs/Parkland. We strive to keep great relationships with our businesses, schools, city officials and readers. Congratulations to Kim for excelling and being recognized for going above and beyond! I hope that you all enjoy this issue and take full advantage of the information we have gathered for you. When visiting establishments around town or signing yourself or family members up for programs offered, please be sure to tell businesses that you found them in Sports & Activities Directory; there’s often a discount or special offer with a mention of their ad. Whether you are traveling out of town or enjoying a staycation this summer, relish in the slower pace of the season, take time to appreciate your loved ones and create a bucketload of beautiful memories. Hello Davie Residents,

8

I hope that everyone is looking forward to another great summer in Cowboy Town, Davie, Florida! As always, we have a wonderful lineup of activities and special events for all of our Town of Davie residents to enjoy over the next few months. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department’s Aquatics Division was recently awarded the National Drowning Prevention Alliance Community Life Saver Award! Each year the award is presented to communities that make remarkable contributions to water safety by providing excellent services while placing an emphasis on drowning prevention. This great accomplishment and recognition is attributed to a number of programs, events and initiatives throughout the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department; although, none quite as big as the countywide #SaferBy4 initiative that has been spearheaded by the Davie Fire Rescue Department and the Aquatics Division. Teaching our youth basic water safety skills through swim lessons is key in ensuring that all of our children not only reach the age of four, but go on to live happy and healthy lives. Swim lessons are available at the Betty Booth Roberts Pool throughout the summer, and at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatics Center year- round. We even offer scholarships; all that you have to do is ask! You can also beat the heat this summer at our splash pad, located at Shenandoah Park. Once again, our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has a fantastic lineup of events this summer for everyone to enjoy. On Saturday, May 18, join us for a day of service at our annual volunteer event, Take Your Kids to the Park Day, where you will be given the opportunity to explore and beautify one of your Town of Davie parks; this event will take place from 8:00am – 10:00am. On Monday, May 27, join the Town of Davie and the Boy Scouts of America South Florida Council, as we honor our fallen heroes during our annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade will start at 10:00am from the Fire Station on Orange Drive, and will continue to SW 65th Way. It will then make its way north toward the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, where the ceremony will follow immediately after. On Saturday, June 1, the annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo will be held at the Town of Davie Golf and Country Club, from 8:00am – 10:00am. Our fishing rodeo is a catch and release event where we focus on conservation and sportsmanship! Join us at Bamford Sports Complex on July 4, to celebrate America’s 243rd birthday, during our annual Independence Day Celebration and Family Fun Day. Festivities will kick off at the Pine Island Pool from 10:00am – 4:00pm, and will include: free swimming, fun Foam Spray from the Davie Fire Department, a water treasure hunt and more! For evening activities, we will be moving to a new location this year. Join the Town of Davie & Broward County Parks and Recreation as we host Fun on the 4th with Red, White & View at Vista View Park. Activities include live music, food trucks, youth activities, inflatables, train rides, and craft vendors. Fireworks will not be released at the park, however you will have a spectacular view of fireworks from the top of the hill from several local displays! When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember: Whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call: (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 27 | May - July 2019

Dear Neighbors,

10

On March 9, 2019, Cooper City held our 60th Founders Day Birthday Celebration. The festivities began with a Color Run at Cooper City High School, to benefit the Relay for Life, and ended with a spectacular fireworks display at Brian Piccolo Park. More than 2,000 Cooper City residents and neighbors took part in the festivities, enjoying the celebrations of this day. We were proud to feature four of our esteemed Cooper City Mayors from years past in our parade this year; having Russell Setti (Cooper City Mayor, 1973 – 1979), Joe Schaeffer (Cooper City Mayor 1979 – 1981), Suellen Fardelmann (Cooper City Mayor 1984 – 2005), and Debby Eisinger (Cooper City Mayor 2005 – 2012) join us was a fitting tribute to our “Through the Decades” parade theme. Our residents expect us to outdo ourselves each year with new and exciting Founder’s Day events, features and activities. Our annual signature event was no exception this year, and I am delighted that everyone was able to come out and join in all of the fun. It is important to celebrate our past as we look to our future; and as such, Cooper City and the Broward Cultural Division of the Broward County Historic Preservation Society will recognize former Mayor, Suellen Fardelmann, in the 45th Annual Pioneer Day, on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Suellen’s long tenure as a Cooper City elected official and her participation in numerous civic and social foundations helped shape Cooper City, leaving many lasting, positive impacts on our community. We look forward to honoring Suellen as our Cooper City Pioneer, 2019 nominee. Please come out and support Suellen Fardelmann by attending this event at noon, on Saturday, May 11, at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. You may register for this free event at: https://www.eventbrite.com. As summer approaches, so does our Cooper City budget workshop and meeting schedule. On May 7, City staff will make the second presentation of the results of Public Input Budget Workshops held in April, to the Commission. On July 9, we will have our first Commission Budget Workshop; if necessary, we will hold a second Commission Budget Workshop on July 11, and we will adopt our preliminary millage and fire assessment rate on July 16, 2019. The budget will be adopted prior to the beginning of the 2019/2020 fiscal year, which is October 1, 2019, and it is important that all residents remain fully aware and educated on City processes. I invite you all to attend every meeting of the Cooper City Commission and to also provide us with your input. Please monitor our meeting schedule and calendar for specific dates and times, at: www.coopercityfl.org. Summer camp registrations have begun, and we have a season full of community events and family activities ahead of us. In addition to our Mother/Daughter Tea on May 11, Touch – A – Truck on June 1, our Father/Son Adventure on June 14, the Dive-In Movie on June 22, and Eat to the Beat on July 12, there are open play chess opportunities every Saturday at the Pool & Tennis Center. I look forward to speaking with you and hearing your thoughts while you challenge me to a game every third Saturday of the month, from 9:00am – 11:00am. Please visit the events section of this publication to view our fall schedule of upcoming events. I hope to see you all, in and around Cooper City! As always, feel free to contact me at: Mayor_Ross@coopercityfl.org, or call me at: (954) 434-4300; #260.

Football and Cheer dominated the Weston area in the

42

2018 season. Parents, Players, Cheerleaders and Coaches gathered almost daily for months and all their hard work paid off. Weston Warriors had never before had as successful a season, across the board since their Program was formed. Three of the football teams came back victorious with Super Bowl trophies, while three other teams were runner-ups in the Gold Coast Pop Warner League. The unprecedented accomplishments were being celebrated by Weston Warriors nation that was founded in 1995. The cheerleaders also showcased their talents and displayed their championship abilities by placing first in the Gold Coast Pop Warner Cheer Competition in the Mitey-Mites and Junior Varsity divisions. In the Mitey Mites (9U) football division, Head Coach Brian McCartney witnessed his team win the Super Bowl championship 20-8 over the Parkland Rangers. In the Junior Pee Wee Gold division (11U), Warriors Head Coach Jose Ortiz watched his players dominate the Boca Raton Braves 36-6. Scott Wallace, the Head Coach of the Warriors Pee Wee (12U) team, had lots of NFL experience on the sidelines. These former pros Darren Smith, Rick Washington and Larry Faison loaned their expertise and knowledge to the players. The Warriors put on an impressive display of offense and defense in a 32-0 win over the Boca Raton Braves. The Gold Coast Pop Warner Super Bowl champion Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee Football teams had high hopes of competing in the National Championships at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Disney World. Both football teams

advanced 3 rounds into Regional Playoffs, only 2 steps away from their dreams. The cheerleaders had their own victories to celebrate. Their dedication and teamwork brought them great success. After winning their conference championship, the JV cheerleaders placed 2nd in the SE Regional Competition qualifying them to compete in Disney World for a National Championship. Eventually, they placed 11th in the country. The Warriors president John LoMonaco and the entire football and cheer organization were thrilled with the league’s outstanding season. “All of our teams played their hearts out and we can be nothing but proud of their performances,” LoMonaco said. “This is the first time in Weston Warriors history that all our football teams played in a League Super Bowl. The Warriors had never won three Super Bowls in the same season. And, what an amazing experience to see our cheerleaders compete on a National stage at Disney World!” The community is so proud of their Warriors and look forward to another wonderful season. Please look for spring conditioning and off-season football camps. Meet the Coaches at our in-person registration events. t Precision Skin Institute, we couldn’t be more thrilled to be offering you access to the aesthetic industry’s most celebrated new advancement in building and sculpting muscle; it’s called EmSculpt, which, according to the International Journal of Aesthetic and Anti-Ageing Medicine, was one of the top emerging aesthetic treatments in 2018. What exactly is it? EmSculpt is a body contouring device that uses an electromagnetic field to stimulate forced muscle contractions, causing muscle growth and fat reduction in the treated areas. It was developed by BTL Industries, who describes EmSculpt as “the only procedure to help both women and men build muscle and sculpt their body.” In addition, EmSculpt is recognized as the world’s first non-invasive buttock toning procedure. EmSculpt continues to soar in popularity, as it sculpts muscle and tones skin in just four sessions; a dream come true for busy moms looking to tone their postpartum bodies. Furthermore, as we move away from the holiday indulgence season and closer to bikini season, enjoying time with our families while feeling confident is of great importance. “We’re so passionate about adding the EmSculpt technology to our practice,” Dr. Marianna Blyumin-Karasik and Dr. Lesley Clark Loeser shared. “We’ve spent nearly three years helping women perfect the look and health of their skin, and by adding a treatment that will help achieve fitness goals, we’re coming full circle.”

EmSculpt is ideal for: lifting /toning buttocks; firming skin on abs; creating muscle tone/definition. Completely non-invasive and FDA-cleared, the process mimics that of an intense workout, and uses HIFEM® (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology to induce powerful muscle contractions not achievable through voluntary contractions; these contractions force the targeted area to respond with a deep remodeling of its inner structure, which results in muscle building and sculpting your body. The following results were achieved in clinical studies on healthy patients: 19% reduction of fat; 11% reduction in abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti); 5x increase in fat metabolism (apoptotic index increased from 19% to 92% after treatment); 80% patients with visible lifting of buttocks; 96% patient satisfaction. What is the typical treatment time of an EmSculpt procedure? The process requires four sessions; each session lasts for 30 minutes. What does an EmSculpt procedure feel like? Is there downtime involved? The treatment requires you to lay down; and though you’ll feel like you’ve had an intensive workout when it’s finished, you may resume normal activity immediately after. How can I book an appointment for the best muscle toning treatment near Fort Lauderdale? Give us a call now, at: (954) 998-0345! At Precision Skin Institute, in Davie, meeting all skincare needs to benefit your healthy lifestyle is our top priority; we strive to ensure that each of our patients reaches a precise aesthetic balance while under our care.

A Difficult Topic for all:

R

TALKING TO OUR CHILDREN ABOUT SELF HARM

aising children is a marathon. They bring us pride, joy and many moments of laughter. There are also many hills to climb, and often the downhill jog turns into a challenge to stay on your feet. We are often focused on what school they should attend, who their friends are and what sports or extracurriculars they get involved in. There are also issues that can surface that we hope we never have to face. It is not often, but there are times when we are asked to help individuals who make statements of self harm. There are a few key elements that should always be followed to make sure our family or friends are safe. If a situation arises in which self harm statements are made, start by calming the situation as much as possible and reach out for help. Stay with your child and try to get them to talk or engage in an activity that will keep them busy until you can get to a doctor, mental health professional or call 911or 211 (first calls for help) or the suicide prevention lifeline (800) 273-8255. I was recently asked how to handle a similar situation where the emotion is high (a meltdown) but the child is not in harms way. My response is similar. The first step would be to calm things down. Avoid punishment and focus on providing supportive statements. Revisit it later that day (or the next if necessary) and then problem solve the situation, including how to handle something similar that may come in the future and any punishments that may be necessary to implement. I like giving each child a “free pass”, but it is an individual choice and ultimately your choice on how you want to parent. Recent studies have revealed that the number of children and teens in the United States that have visited Emergency rooms for suicidal thoughts over an 8 year period ending in 2015 has doubled. During the same period of time it is estimated that 59% of children report that they have experienced cyberbullying. The important part to take away from this is that there are ways of helping our children prior to needing an ER visit. In an attempt to offer more assistance I asked the other members in the office to share some thoughts that may be helpful should you find yourself in a difficult situation. Dr. Heather Bossong, Psy.D. - This is from an article on Validation that I give parents about validating their child’s current situation and emotions: “One of the four options we have in any problem situation is acceptance. Validation is one way that we communicate acceptance of ourselves and others. Validation doesn’t mean agreeing or approving. When your best friend or a family member makes a decision that you really don’t think is wise, validation is a way of supporting them and strengthening the relationship while maintaining a different

By Dr. David Yudell & Associates

opinion. Validation is a way of communicating that the relationship is important and solid even when you disagree on issues. Validation is the recognition and acceptance of another person’s thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviors as understandable.” Dr. Katrina Macias, Psy.D. - Do not be afraid to ask your loved ones if they are having thoughts of suicide. Asking about suicidal ideation does not “plant the idea in someone’s mind” or increase its likelihood in an individual; instead, it conveys to them that they are allowed to share about these personal struggles, which allows for proper support and treatment to be implemented. Dr. Pamela Baker, Psy.D. - Depression can be a truly isolating experience for any individual, one that might result in feelings of self-blame, guilt, and shame. While there are no magic words to immediately reduce pain and suffering in your child, your physical and emotional presence are crucial. Active and reflective listening, as well as non-verbal cues such as a gentle touch (if this is something with which your child is usually comfortable), eye contact, a calm tone, leaning in to his/her words, and even just sitting beside them in silence, can all be incredibly effective in helping to put a vulnerable child at ease. Keep your initial statements simple, but reassuring, “You are not alone in this”, “We will do whatever we need to do to get you through this,” “You are so very loved.” Dr. Dovid Kirzner, Psy.D. - “By providing our children and loved ones with a scheduled weekly time slot to express their joys, sorrows, triumphs, and angst in a safe and nonjudgmental environment we may actually be saving their lives. This weekly meeting may be held within the comfort of one’s living room, bedroom, or even around the dinner table.” Dr. Myriam Padron, Psy.D. - Although suicide is seen as a taboo topic to discuss, it is important to provide your child/teen with a safe place to verbalize their thoughts regarding the issue (whether it be within the family or in therapy), especially if they have endorsed suicidal ideation in the past. Creating a safety plan as a family together may be helpful if your child/teen is open to the idea. Pam Wachtel, LMFT - I encourage all parents to check in regularly with their children and teenagers. Open and honest communication is very important when dealing with difficult topics such as suicide. Beth Alhanti, LMHC - Kids and adults have dealt - or not dealt - with the events of February differently. Some have chosen activism - trying to fight for or against causes they felt might have contributed to the tragedy. Many of them have not slowed down enough to deal with their own grief and guilt. We cannot forget them, as we analyze who might be experiencing deep, internal conflict and pain.

ova High School has always been a leader in the county when it comes to offering a diverse academic course selection. Its inclusive approach to education continued this year with the introduction of a new course called Latinos In Action (LIA), a countywide program aimed at empowering Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through college and career readiness. The yearlong elective class is taught by Nova’s AP World History and Capstone teacher, Gonzalo Laverde, and focuses on four pillars: leveraging personal and cultural assets, excelling in education, serving the community, and developing leadership skills. “Latinos in Action teaches students to be socially active and community-minded,” said Laverde. “The students, through service, leadership and social activities, are becoming more active at their school and finding new avenues to help the campus and overarching community.” Working from within the educational system to create positive change, LIA utilizes an asset-based approach to bridging the graduation and opportunity gap for Latino students. Each LIA student gains real life leadership experience by participating in student-led service, social, and professional committees. This year alone, Nova’s LIA students have participated in a number of community service projects, including: a campus cleanup, several food drives with Feeding South Florida, a STEM and Arts night, and Operation Christmas Child¬, where they packed holiday gifts for underprivileged children. The students have also served as mentors and literacy tutors for students from Nova Blanche Forman and Nova Eisenhower elementary schools. “Latinos in Action is such a great way for students of Hispanic and other backgrounds to serve their communities, and be leaders and role models for younger kids to look up to,” said junior LIA member, Brooklyn Fernandez. LIA has also spearheaded several social events throughout the year that celebrate Latino culture, such as a Dominos Night, that was held in February. The students have also had opportunities to meet with important leaders, including LIA CEO and founder, Dr. Jose Enriquez, as well as an immigration coalition activist who spoke to students about voting rights and college and career opportunities. Overall, Nova recognizes the importance of the vertical teaming that LIA encourages between the elementary and high school, as students move through the Nova system. By the same token, the program helps create an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment from the elementary to high school level, while also empowering and inspiring these students to become the leaders and agents of change needed in their communities and our world.

mbassy Creek is incredible! Our teachers and staff empower students daily to transform lives in our community. By supporting Relay for Life, Autism Awareness, the harvest drive, and many other philanthropic efforts, students are not only giving back, they are raising hope. Our students are an inspiration, as they continually strive to build each other up, fostering growth and development of character. Additionally, Embassy Creek is surrounded by heroes both locally and worldwide. Embassy student council students have raised thousands of dollars for Relay for Life over the past 10 years. Our students fundraise through various holiday grams and our annual movie night. In December, we participated in the tree decorating contest for Light Up Cooper City, where students worked hard on creating two trees displaying heroes in our community; they honored veterans and current military men and women serving our country, as well as local heroes like our police force, firefighters, and teachers. We love and support all of our Cooper City heroes!

January 31 was our annual Relay for Life movie night, featuring the Incredibles 2. Our student council kids and staff helped put together a fabulous family night, raising over $5000! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to help raise money for cancer research. For us, it is important that our students learn to give back to the community by helping others; by doing so, it brings student leaders and the hard workers of the student body together and promotes strong teamwork! Embassy Creek Student Council is an organization of students who serve the community and raise school spirit by supporting their fellow students and allowing members a chance to develop and use leadership skills; while incorporating student values and ideals, these leadership skills help provide for those that are less fortunate in our community. It has been both an honor and a privilege to lead these young leaders of tomorrow, and we look forward to all the amazing things that they will accomplish in 2019!

NOVA EISENHOWER ELEMENTARY GETS ZEN WITH NEW YOGA PROGRAM W

ith the pressures of state mandated assessments, it’s easy for students to feel anxiety and pressure build up as the testing date quickly approaches. While adults may possess the resources to cope with these difficulties when they arise for themselves, young students might not know how to channel their mindsets and energy in a productive way, to release their stress or anxious feelings. Luckily, the third grade students at Nova Eisenhower Elementary School (NEE) are participating in a monthly yoga program, hosted by Holy Cross Hospital, that teaches kids how to use the power of positivity and slow physical stretches to meditate and release some of those pesky anxious feelings. Mrs. Cathy Whitt, Holy Cross Hospital’s yoga specialist and teacher, meets with each third grade class at NEE once a week, where she shares her knowledge and expertise to deliver authentic yoga classes for these young minds. The sessions began in September 2018, and since then, students have been able to apply everything that they have learned with Mrs. Cathy in the classroom and at home. For example, Ms. Stuart’s class loves to practice ‘samasthiti’ (a yoga term for sitting/standing ‘straight and tall’) in class. Students find that when they remind themselves to do this, they are able to open the mind and body, absorbing and grasping concepts taught in class. In addition to learning all about yoga, some classes even become part of the BCPS distance learning programs after completing their sessions. Mrs. Cathy uses distance learning with a participating class, as well as with other schools, so that they may also partake in this beneficial opportunity.

Students have vocally expressed to their teachers, parents, and peers how much they enjoy attending Mrs. Cathy’s sessions each month. The third grade team actively shares photos and videos on Twitter, in hopes that other schools may observe the benefits of infusing this technique, and the results that can occur with their students. Check out what some of NEE’s students had to say about this unique experience: “I love going to yoga in school because as a dancer, I feel that I have learned new stretches that I have been able to use in dance class. Now when I dance, I feel more prepared.” –Jolani, age 9, Ms. Stuart’s class. “Yoga has helped me feel more relaxed in my class. Sometimes when I take tests I get nervous and I don’t do well. So now that I know how to calm myself, I feel I do better in school.” –Khristian, age 9, Ms. Grumley’s class. “Yoga has helped me with my anger. Now when I get angry, I calm down and speak softly.” –Keiko, age 8, Mrs. Beck’s class. “Sometimes when I do my homework, I get frustrated. Going to yoga has helped me practice ways to calm myself down, so that I can do my homework the right way.” –Thaleah, age 9, Ms. Walter’s class. As a title I school, NEE is extremely grateful for this opportunity since many of their students do not have exposure to these types of classes. Namaste!

lamingo Academy is excited to have begun planning for our seventh summer of on-campus academic summer camp, where teachers plan quality lessons that review skills learned in previous grades, while also exposing students to the curriculum that they will learn in their upcoming grade. At summer camp, the children have fun learning academics three hours per day. This learning of math, reading, and writing is balanced into an enriching schedule that includes: science, computer lab, team sports, art, music, and so much more! Two days per week the students get to have even more fun; one day during the week, we contract vendors to bring amazing “in-house field trips” and another day, we have the children’s favorite, Splash Day! On Splash Day, campers come in their swimsuits, slide down giant inflatable water slides, and participate in lots of other Splash Day activities. For just $155 per week, your child can be dropped off any time after 7:00am, and may be picked up by 6:00pm. Monday through Thursday, we offer free breakfast and

ost likely you already know or have heard that STEM is an acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.” The idea behind STEM is to encourage the United States to be more competitive in technology development by creating generations of students who can excel in high-tech jobs (some like to call this generation, “STEMists.”) STEM education is an interdisciplinary and applied approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons. Students use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise. STEM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for all students as young as they start asking why. Therefore, the experiences children have during the early years are essential. As your child’s first teacher, your role is vital in creating opportunities that promote learning in a fun and safe environment. You can help introduce essential STEM skills by teaching your children to: ask questions, work together, think creatively, solve problems, explore and take calculated risks, test solutions

lunch to all campers. Registration begins Monday, April 22, 2019. You can register your child from 2:30pm – 4:30pm, in the front office; once registered, weekly payments can be made online. Any Broward County public school student is eligible to attend; we encourage you to invite your child’s friends to join with them. You can see photos from our program last year, at: www.twitter.com/flamingoacademy. Feel free to follow us on Twitter, where you can stay updated on our summer schedule. For more information about this great camp opportunity, please contact Stephanie or Jamie Anderson in the aftercare office, at: (754) 323-5730 or via e-mail, at: FlamingoASC@browardschools.com. As parents and teachers, we work very hard from August – May, so that our children may make learning gains. If you do not choose an academic summer program, please plan on having your child practice their reading, writing, and math skills over the summer to ensure that they don’t regress from their current level.

This center is located at 101 E Commercial Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, 33334. We are a local company and are excited to be a physical part of the community with our STEAM Creation Center. We hope our presence encourages the development of more STEM skills for people of all ages. We have created a curriculum that incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math that makes learning exciting. Our curriculum enables children as young as 5 years old to be hands-on creators as they explore, discover, and learn more about their hidden capabilities. We will be offering classes, camp and creating classes for adults! So take a journey with us as we navigate through the secret passageways of Robotics, Coding, and Engineering together as a team.
