Dear Readers,

The end of the school year is upon us and I hope your children had a wonderful year of learning in person while bonding with friends and involving themselves in school activities and sports. Don’t forget to thank your teachers and administrators at your school for all their collective hard work and effort to educate and involve your children. They spend more time with our kids than we do during the week, and they spend more time with your kids than their own! I hope everyone can take a minute and write a note to someone in school who has make a positive impact on your child. Little things like that go a long way to keep our teachers feeling appreciated and inspired. If we’ve learned nothing else through the pandemic, health and family should be at the top of our priority list. Make the effort to involve yourself and attend your children’s games, events and activities. Make the time for yourself and your family to eat healthy and exercise. Gather your family and friends and reconnect with barbecues and celebrations. The biggest regrets are missed opportunities with those we love and cherish. This issue features awesome summer camps in your town and surrounding areas. Use our camp directory to explore new avenues of interest or to further develop your children’s passions and talents. Summer is an exciting time for your children. Hopefully, vacations and sleeping in are a part of this summer, but consider a few sessions of camp to keep their physical, mental and emotions acuities developing and evolving. The Sports & Activities Directory is a wealth of information to peak everyone’s interest. Find some local events to attend, catch a baseball game or concert, enjoy a theater performance, parade or fireworks for 4th of July. Create beautiful traditions and memories with your family, neighbors and friends…that’s what we are all about! As we are about to celebrate 20 years of publishing, we couldn’t be more proud of what we do for our communities. It is truly an honor to highlight and promote the thousands of activities, events, sports, organizations and businesses, not to mention our youth athletes and coaches in each city where we publish. Please visit our website to view any of our 5 online area magazines with interactive links to all of our advertisers. You are able to flip through in a magazine format or download the entire magazine to your device. Please mention the Sports & Activities Directory when you visit our advertisers, because we can’t do what we do without them! Be well! Be safe! Be kind! My best to you,

Margot

Dear Readers,

8

I am deeply honored and humbled to have been chosen to be a 2022 inductee into the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame. For 38 years, the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County has honored seniors for their contributions to the community through this recognition. When I was told, I actually had to catch my breath. I do what I do out of love for my community, concern regarding difficult issues, and because I honestly like helping. I encourage our youth to get involved and give of their time. I’m glad my life has taken me in this direction Throughout the month of May, Mental Health America, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and other mental health organizations across the country organize events, webinars, and more to improve mental health access across the country. At our May Commission Meeting, I will issue a proclamation recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. In the Proclamation I strongly urge the citizens in our community to commit to increasing and understanding mental health illnesses, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appreciation and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses. If you or a loved one is experiencing mental health issues, please visit resources we’ve posted on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. Simply click on Resident Resources at the top of the website and Mental Health Resources under Living in Pines. It’s also time to reassess your hurricane preparations or begin preparing. On Sunday, May 9, 2022 through Saturday, May 13, 2022, we recognize National Hurricane Preparedness Week. National Hurricane Preparedness is a nationwide effort to inform the public about hurricane hazards and to disseminate information and share knowledge which can be used to prepare and take action. Hurricane preparedness is essential to all of us living in South Florida which is why we provide an extensive and comprehensive section regarding hurricanes, preparation and resources on the city’s website at www. ppines.com/hurricane called Pembroke Pines Prepared. There will also continually be helpful information posted on the city’s social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter throughout the season and year, and during National Hurricane Preparedness Week. The Mayor’s Annual Chess Challenge is back in Pembroke Pines and being held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club 19 Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meet-ups in over 20 different cities created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community. For more information about the Mayor’s Chess Challenge in Pembroke Pines, please visit www.ppines.com/specialevents. Please be sure to attend our Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 30, 2022, to honor our country’s men and women who have died in the military. It will begin 9 a.m. at Fletcher Park, located at 7900 Johnson Street. And, please remain safe. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

From your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

T

he Children’s Services Council of Broward County wants to remind you - Don’t lose track of where your children are! Now more than ever, distractions can cause a tragedy in and around water. If you can’t find your child, check the water first! Remember the layers of protection: Install alarms on doors leading to water, place fencing around pools, learn CPR, and remember to always be Water Smart! Did you know drowning is the leading cause of injury and death of children ages 1 to 4 years old? The majority of children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in the water or even near the pool. Most children who drown in a home pool enter the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. Children need capable, close and constant supervision, especially toddlers who may easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area unnoticed. A dedicated “Water Watcher” can help save children from death or injury from drowning.

SIMPLE STEPS SAVES LIVES

The loss of a child is devastating to parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives and to a community. Drowning is almost always preventable by following these simple steps. Here are some guidelines to follow: 1. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an

adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic. Turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help. 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice water safety by wearing clothing in the water to experience the feeling.

Drowning Is Quick AND Silent

• Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes. • Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes. • Most children who drown are out of sight for less than 5 minutes and are usually accompanied by one or both parents whom are nearby. • Most children that die are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes. For more information about water safety, please visit cscbroward.org/safeswim and watersmartbroward.org.

T

he average American spends about 7 hours a day on electronic devices. Nearly 70% of those people experience an eye condition called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). CVS is a group of eye and vision-related issues resulting from prolonged computer, tablet or phone use. At higher risk are those who spend 2 or more continuous hours on an electronic device daily. In this day and age, 83% of Americans spend at least that amount of time on electronics as reported by The Vision Council, many of them suffering from CVS. Being aware of Computer Vision Syndrome symptoms and getting your yearly eye exam can help prevent against serious damage related to digital eye strain. The most common symptoms include tired eyes, fluctuating or blurry vision (even blurred driving vision after work), dry eyes and double vision. The eye strain experienced can lead to dull headaches, typically around the eyes. In some cases, symptoms can result from uncorrected vision or the inability of the eyes to focus or coordinate together. Even the presence of minor uncorrected vision problems can lead to discomfort and poor work performance. Computer Vision Syndrome can be diagnosed at The Eye Center beginning by taking a very careful history. The history will determine symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision, burning or even maybe itching. Visual acuity is then tested to see if there is a need for prescription computer glasses. Lastly, the eyes are tested to see how well they focus and work together. Treatment depends on the findings during your eye exam. Sometimes glasses may be prescribed specifically to be used for the computer. At The Eye Center, we recommend a special coating on the glasses called “Blue Light Filter.” Blue light is a harmful visible light emitted from all electronic devices. Blue light disrupts sleep which in turn can affect work performance. It also can impair memory and lead to poor attention span. Lastly, long-term exposure can result in certain eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Proper lighting and controlling glare on digital devices as well as establishing a proper working distance are also recommended. The preferred distance for computers should be about arm’s length or between 20-28 inches from your eyes to the screen. Bright lighting overhead can reduce eyestrain as well as reducing the glare on your computer with the use of filters or anti-glare glasses. You may find it helpful to increase the text size of your device to increase contrast and definition. We encourage the 20-20-20 rule which means to take a 20-second break every 20 minutes while viewing 20 feet and beyond. Also, remember to keep blinking. Blinking promotes excretion of special oils that prevent dry eye. Normally we blink about 18 times per minute but that is reduced to half when viewing electronics. Artificial tears or lubricating drops may help in these cases. If you are experiencing computer-related eyestrain and symptoms, talk about your solutions with your eye doctor. Being aware of computer vision syndrome and receiving a proper evaluation by an eye care specialist is the best type of preventative medicine. The Eye Center is located at 1732 North University Drive in Pembroke Pines. They can be reached at (954) 432-7712.

Teamwork is a lot of what learning is all about. Team teaching, group learning, and a whole-language approach to education are all pedagogical trends that find a home at Palm Cove. The goal of using baseball terminology is to make learning fun, motivate the children, and keep students excited. n March 5th, 2022, The Lab Rats from Pembroke Pines Elementary School entered the SECME Mousetrap Car Competition at Nova High School. The mousetrap car project is a physics challenge: Build a vehicle that can travel as far as possible by using only the energy from a single mousetrap. The car that travels the furthest wins. This team, made up of 5th grade students and under the leadership of Ms. Christy Jenkins, worked for months to build the perfect mousetrap car. They put in countless hours to make sure that their car was in good working order and was up to the challenge. With this win, our car will be entered into the national competition. This is exciting for our school, and we are proud of the students who participated. We are also very grateful to Ms. Jenkins who volunteered her time to not only work with the students after school, but to take them to the competition on a Saturday. We have many exciting activities coming up in this last quarter of the school year. Field day will be held, where we will name a house champion. Spring clubs are taking place and students are participating in sports club, STEM, art club, gardening, and percussions. We recently had our movie night and our multicultural night, and our families had a great time. We also partnered with the Rotary Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines to give each student books for the holidays. It feels great to be able to return to some normalcy on our campus.

ummer is a welcome break for families, but it can cause problems when it comes to the long-term retention of academic skills and knowledge. Many experts report that summertime regression is a significant problem for students of all ages, with children losing several months’ worth of reading and math skills over break. Here’s the good news: it’s not as hard as you think to minimize the problem. Here are a few ways you can help your child avoid the summer slide: Read every day. A regular reading habit is a valuable part of a good bedtime routine anyway, but best of all, it is one of the easiest ways for your child to keep up those literacy skills. Make frequent visits to the library and encourage your child to get involved in any book clubs or summer reading programs offered. Let your child explore other formats in addition to books. The point is to get him or her reading. Review past work. It might take a little convincing, but even ten minutes a day spent looking over old worksheets, math problems, or other assignments is time well spent. This will help your child keep fresh on the skills learned last school year and ensure he or she is ready to pick up where the teacher left off when the fall semester begins. Plan writing activities. Have your child continue to strengthen those writing muscles by embracing fun activities like journaling, creative writing or even blogging. If those things don’t pique your child’s interest, consider weekly themes for inspiration. For example, one week’s theme might be favorite people, and each day children could write about a celebrity or professional athlete they admire, a friend who means a lot to them, or another role model.

Pembroke Pines Elementary is committed to providing a quality education to all students and ensuring that they have the skills necessary for the next step in their educational careers. We also work to provide them with social and emotional lessons that will prepare them to take on the challenges they will face as they traverse through life. We always welcome volunteers to our school. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the school at (754) 323-7000. Pembroke Pines Elementary is located at 6700 SW 9th Street in Pembroke Pines. Natasha Bell is the Principal.

Go places. Many families use their children’s summer break as a chance to take vacations. Why not transform those road and plane trips into educational opportunities? You and your child should check out travel guides from the library and do some online research together to learn more about wherever you’re headed. Have your child choose a few cultural attractions to enjoy and share what he or she wants to discover while visiting them. Catch up or get ahead. Summer is the best time to close any skill gaps and correct any problems that arose during the school year. It’s also a great chance to get ahead if your child is gearing up to take several challenging classes next year or wants to solidify knowledge built during the prior school year. If you’d like help creating a targeted summer learning program that meets your child’s goals and helps him or her flourish, call Huntington. We’ll help your child retain those important skills he or she learned throughout the school year. By the time next fall comes around, he or she will be ready to hit the ground running and keep building that knowledge base. Call 1-800 CAN LEARN today. fter months of preparation, the night of PPCHS’s Black Student Union (BSU) Showcase was finally here! February 24, 2022 was a night of true significance as the audience and performers came together, filled up the River of Grass theater, and celebrated Black pride before anything else. With the showcase themed “Only Time Will Tell,” BSU and other students took to the stage to present the progression of Black culture throughout history -- and they quickly brought the crowd up from their feet while doing so. Starting off with the 17th and 18th centuries, the showcase opened with a history skit by BSU club members, followed by senior Samantha Lowe’s poetry reading about deeply rooted racism. Sophomore Anaya Andre then went center stage to sing “Stand Up,” honoring Harriet Tubman’s work in freeing enslaved African Americans. She explains that, “When [she] first heard this song, [she] was moved by its empowering message for the Black community to come together in unity.” Without hesitation, she decided to use the talent in her vocal cords to be a voice for her people. Going forward on the timeline, Fashion Club introduced the Harlem Renaissance as they strutted with class down the stage. Their snazzy outfits -- feather boas paired with satin dresses and fedoras with tuxes -- showed off the freedom of the Black community during the iconic era. Passing down the jazz club vibe, Charter’s very own Jazz Band performed “Abracadabra,” which was made even more special when emcee and BSU President Melissa Lewis brought out her prized alto saxophone to play alongside them. While organizing the entire event was a separate challenge, she emphasizes that she knows it all paid off, “I love playing my saxophone and I’m glad I could perform in my last showcase doing something I love!... I am proud we got the chance to represent our culture to the community here at Charter,” said Lewis. The stage got more active as Ms. Stacy Theodore’s Dance Class put on a show with sass to Christina Aguilera’s “Spotlight”. Then, the night went on with even more

inspirational songs that heard the spirited voices of the audience, like “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is referred to as “The Black National Anthem,” and “Rise Up” sung by freshman Janiyah Obas. Another host of the night, BSU Assistant President Kaitlyn Ayebah, proceeded to introduce the next legendary time period with Melissa: the 80s and 90s. This time, the auditorium wasn’t booming with noise from singing, but from the crowd hyping up the old school versus new school dance battle before them. With popular dances such as the Dougie, and the Jerk, this skit kept the momentum of the night going. One of the dancers, Junior Aiyanna Nixon, felt the simultaneous fun and pride of doing this energetic act, saying that “giving everyone a taste of what [her] culture contains was an amazing feeling” and she “wanted everyone to feel the emotions, as well.” Sure enough, the skit brought everyone dancing with them. The decades were then finished off with Liana Samuel and Evangelin Rejeev singing “Put Your Records On”. As the night came closer to an end, the last age to spotlight was the present. Step Team highlighted the strength of Black women in today’s society with a fierce performance, which was followed by a memorable end to the event: Brothers of the Omega Psi Phi, a historically African American fraternity from Howard University, performed their own traditional dance. As a surprise, BSU sponsor Coach Willis joined them in showing off their roots. As all the performers took to the stage one last time for their final bow, huge smiles spread on their faces despite the sweat on their backs from the work they put out. Although the showcase was only an hour long, it thoroughly proved that there’s great power in preserving culture. ilver Trail Middle School (STMS) has revived their Drama Club, after taking a hiatus during Distance Learning. Under the leadership of Club Sponsor Mr. Colin Miller whose goal is to bring the fun of theater to the students of Silver Trail and Musical Director, Mr. Edgar Rubio, the program is thriving. This year’s focus is on preparing for the production of the play “Bye Bye Birdie”. The play tells the story of a 1950s Rock N’ Roll singer named Conrad Birdie who travels to a small Ohio town to make his “farewell” performance on television and meet his biggest fan before he is drafted. Mr. Miller who has acted and sang, in musicals, plays and concerts, since he was eight years old, has passed on his passion to the cast. Naysa Cabrera who plays Kim MacAfee stated that she has fun during Drama Club because she gets to work with others who want to be there, since participating is optional. Jack DeVita

here are so many exciting things going on at Pines Middle School! We are thrilled to be in our first year of the Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS) program. Each student is encouraged to sign out an iPad for the year that comes with a sturdy case and 10 Gb wireless data per month. Our goal is to provide devices, training on digital literacy, and engaging lessons focusing on Science, Math, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education to bridge the digital divide. By increasing student engagement, improvement in student achievement will follow, ensuring our students are both college and career ready. We look forward to building upon this program in year two and to that end, we have applied for a grant from Verizon and Heart of America for an Immersive Media Lab. With the addition of this lab, our students will have access to 3D printers, augmented reality, and virtual reality to help our students change the world through innovation and design thinking. Wish us luck! Our students and coaches have enjoyed getting back to normal athletic sports seasons. We just wrapped girls and boys flag football and are looking forward to a successful track season. Additionally, our athletics department recently updated the floors in our gymnasium which was highlighted at our ribbon-cutting ceremony. New banners of past student scholar-athletes line the walls in the gym. The images of these hometown role models serve as an inspiration to our students and visitors. We hope that our learners can literally see themselves up on those walls one day! In addition to rigorous core classes, our elective offerings are designed to engage students.

embroke Lakes Elementary (PLE) recently received a Media Center refresh through the SMART Bond Program. The SMART Program is an $800 million capital improvement program put in place to enhance the educational experience of Broward County Public Schools students. When students returned from winter break and visited the media center the excitement was palpable. Students were welcomed with brand-new furniture including couches, ottomans, modern bookshelves, and tables conducive to group work. “At PLE, students are engaged, by design, in learner active and technology infused classrooms. It is exciting to extend that design to Media Center as well,” stated Mrs. Marsha Wagner, Proud Principal. The media center now has furniture that matches the functionality of our instructional pedagogy found throughout the building. Creating an environment with many different options for seating means that students can self-select what will work best for them and the current

The annual Day of Service and Love event was held on February 14, 2022, in observance of the commemoration of the 17 lives lost and those injured as a result of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Our school community came together through classroom and schoolwide service and learning activities to focus on social and emotional well-being as well as making a positive impact in our community. We also hosted an event honoring our local heroes at the Pembroke Pines Police Department. Our Band, Literacy, and Theatre students and teachers teamed up to design a special tribute to our real-life superheroes. We are very proud of the special things going on in our learning community. task at hand. “The best part is that everything is on wheels which allows me to change the design of the media center based on whether students will be engaged in independent exploration or creative group production,” Mrs. Katrina Fossella, Media Specialist, shared. At PLE, students visit the media center once a week as a special. Not only do they check out books, but they also learn to code robots, access databases for research, and use their creativity and imagination in the makerspace area. Now with flexible seating, students can easily work on collaborative research projects using applications found on their Clever account. PLE’s media center provides a safe place for ALL students to create, share, think, and grow. The faculty and staff at PLE are eagerly anticipating the new adventures PLE students will experience in their new space! Pembroke Lakes Elementary is located at 11251 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines.
