Dear Readers,

Welcome to the winter issue of Sports & Activities Directory! I am sending out my best wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy holiday season, and a very joyous and prosperous New Year! We are so happy to be back publishing and getting our directory into your hands again. Our advertisers, cities and schools have been incredible with their support as we successfully relaunched this fall with our back to school issue. I think you can all relate when I say how much I appreciate getting back to a version of normal life again. Having the past 18 months off, I found a renewed energy and appreciation for my career and the value we bring to our communities. Never before, in my 19 years of publishing the Sports & Activities Directory, have I heard so much excitement about our publication and how much they missed having this resource in their homes. Thank you to each one of you who shared your excitement at seeing us in print again! We can’t do what we do without you! In the pages ahead, you will find a multitude of events for you and your families to get out and celebrate the holidays, organizations that need your help with volunteer hours and donations, school success stories, sports features and more. As many sports wrap up their fall seasons, look through the sports directory (red tabbed) for winter and spring registrations taking place now for sports such as baseball, flag football, basketball, soccer, rugby and softball. Also find the ongoing afterschool programs and activities such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, golf and tennis. Living in Florida with our beautiful weather offers a large variety of options for our children to enjoy while developing new friendships, physical and/or academic skills and overall enrichment as they challenge themselves with new activities. If you are new to the area or have just found the Sports & Activities Directory for the first time, please read through and enjoy, like our Facebook page @ SportsAndActivitiesDirectory, and visit our website www.SportsAndActivities.com to view all five of our area publications in Broward County online. All advertisements have active links to visit any or all of our advertisers’ websites to learn more about the family-friendly businesses in your community. In times like these, we are so grateful to be working closely with the many Health Care providers and facilities in and around your town. Whether you need hospitals or specialists, vaccines/boosters, urgent care, dentistry/orthodontics, vision correction, or therapy of any kind, we have a Health Directory (orange tabbed) that just keeps growing! Let us all be little more conscious of our health and more proactive in prevention of health issues. Please enjoy every moment with your family and loved ones during the holidays and every day, nothing is more important than that! My best to you,

Margot

Dear Readers,

8

We started this month off on a positive note with “Extra Mile Day,“ which is every November 1st and recognizes that all people can create positive change in themselves, families, organizations and communities by going the extra mile in their lives. I know that as Mayor of our great City of Pembroke Pines, it is always my goal to go the extra mile for our residents and businesses. I encourage everyone to go the extra mile in their pursuit of dreams and in their lives, adding volunteerism and service to help our communities. On a more serious note, since the start of this school year, several Broward students have been arrested for making threats against schools, some from our very own city. Social media posts are not a joke, not a prank and each threat is taken very seriously. This message has been driven home multiple times, yet this behavior continues. Our schools face a myriad of challenges in this time of pandemic, but threats against schools and students shouldn’t be one of them. Law enforcement, school administrations, parents and students are all in this together. I strongly recommend that parents talk to their children and advise them on the life altering consequences these threats can have on their chances of getting accepted into college, joining the military, and/or passing a background check for a potential career, all because of a prank or joke. Reality has shown us that violence does occur in schools throughout the country, so law enforcement has an obligation to follow through on every threat. So, parents, please again make sure your children understand the seriousness and consequences of such threats. One fake threat is one too many. Talk to each other, monitor your child’s social media and please say something if you see something. We are now in the final month of hurricane season. At the time of this writing, we have been fortunate in avoiding the many hurricanes and storms that have formed this year. Please remember to always be prepared. It’s the price we pay for living in paradise. Information is at your fingertips at www.ppines.com/hurricane. On a final note, everyone is invited to attend our celebration to honor our country’s veterans, past and present, at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Thursday, November 11, 2021, 12 Noon at the Charles F. Dodge City Center Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way. The ceremony, to honor those who have kept us safe, features the presentation of colors, musical performances and guest speakers. Please stay safe by wearing masks and social distancing. I would also like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and holiday season, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself

14

to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-nine years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the yearround effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 185 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 8,900 families (approximately 27,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time and beyond. Distribution

sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Donate food for our volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

T

he pandemic took a toll on many students and the current reality is many who have fallen behind and lost motivation. Falling grades are problematic, but an even bigger issue is when your child seems uninterested in turning things around. What can you do to help your child who seems apathetic about school and whose As have dwindled to Cs? Here are several tips: Have an open conversation. Without judgment or frustration, talk with your child about what they’re feeling. When did problems start? What subjects have been especially difficult? Let your child know that you want them to find success in school, but more importantly, you want them to feel good about themselves going into this new year. Discuss the importance of effort. Sometimes, school is difficult. This past year proved that things can change suddenly, and for many students, that’s not ideal. Your child needs the reminder that hard things require significant effort. Not every subject comes easy and your child might not always like what they learn. But in the end, the achievement is worth the struggle. Tell your child to take pride in their accomplishments. Make sure your child is challenged. Remote learning was fraught with problems and led to not only a loss of skills for many students, but also a loss of interest. As you head into this new school year, make sure your child spends time setting goals and laying out the steps to achieve those goals. Talk about what aspects of the school year are exciting and what they are hoping to learn and do during this new year. Sometimes, a little effort toward thinking about these things helps students refocus. Work to rebuild their academic stamina. With many students learning remotely for much or all of last school year, chances are high that your child might have lost some of their fortitude to study and persist through challenging school

work. Set high but achievable expectations. Express confidence in your child. Remind them to view learning as continuous so that they develop a growth mindset (rather than a fixed mindset). And ask their teachers for suggestions on how to reestablish good habits. Focus on time management. For many students, the chaos of last school year led to many bad habits. Get your child back on track with a few best practices: planner use, planning out every homework session so that they minimize wasted time, good homework routines and the use of timers and reminders. This keeps your child on track and deters procrastination. It can also help with the child who avoids homework by simplifying what they have to do. Understandably, many children have experienced negative feelings about school in the last year and a half. This coming school year is likely to be a year of refocusing and rebuilding. If your child seemed unmotivated at the end of the last school year and their grades showed the same, call Huntington. We can investigate the problem and identify exactly what is going on, then develop a customized program of instruction. Our approach is effective and will help your student turn things around quickly! Call 1-800 CAN LEARN today.

Elementary School. We are happy to have all our Pirates back on campus for what has already been an exciting school year. Our theme this year is “Sailing on the Ship of Success and as we come off a challenging 2020-2021 school year, we are committed to making sure that all our students are on the “Ship to Success” with us. We will do so by ensuring that we stay true to our mission of providing a quality education to our students, as well as affording them opportunities to participate in enrichment activities that help develop the whole child. These activities include Peer Counseling, Recycling, Pirate Pals, Dance, Chorus, Art, WPPE Morning Announcements and Sports to name a few. We have also continued our school-wide “House System” that fosters community for all PPE students and staff members. Every student and staff member are sorted into one of four houses. Emerald House (Green), Ruby House (Red), Sapphire House (Blue), and Topaz House (Yellow). There are many benefits for having a “House System” at Pembroke Pines Elementary. The benefits include promoting student leadership, promoting healthy competition, teaching teamwork and fostering a sense of community. This year we are also paying extra attention to the social and emotional needs of our students. We engage in mindfulness activities each day with students, that will provide them with the tools needed to cope with challenges that they may encounter. Overall, we are proud of the programs that we offer to all students in VPK – 5th grade. Thank you to our parents, partners and the Pembroke Pines Community for their continued support of our school and its mission. This support is vital to our success and if we continue to work together, Pembroke Pines Elementary will continue to soar to new heights. We are always looking for partners in education. Please contact the school at (754) 323-7000 if you would like to be a partner or to be a volunteer. Pembroke Pines Elementary is located at 6700 SW 9th Street in Pembroke Pines. Their Principal is Mrs. Natasha Bell.

professional committees. STMS’ LIA teacher Ms. Rodriguez said, “I have hope for the future and it starts now right here, with the leaders that we build in this program. I have seen the kid’s hearts and their eagerness and willingness to go out there and help their community. It is impressive. Our students want to do good and practice kindness.” Events already planned include cleaning up beaches, working with pet shelters and hosting an event to adopt pets. There are several other events that the LIA leadership committees will organize throughout the year. Another essential and integral part of the program is Literacy Tutoring. Starting in the middle of October, LIA students serve as role models, mentors and literacy tutors for students at neighboring elementary schools. This partnership helps both parties develop linguistic proficiency, refine social skills, and deepen their understanding of the value of being bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. The LIA classroom model has proven effective in schools throughout the United States. When the program is implemented with fidelity, students graduate high school on-time and enroll in college at a higher rate than the national average. Participation in the LIA program is not just for Hispanic/Latino students. Every student is welcome to be part of a group that strives to make a difference in their communities, while being great role models and leaders. If you would like to help this program and help sponsor some of their activities, you may send an email to Lynnette.Rodriguez@browardschools.com. ilver Trail Middle School (STMS) is making strides in their newest elective course Latinos In Action (LIA). This year-long elective course is taught by highly qualified teachers at the middle and high school level. LIA is designed to bridge the graduation and opportunity gap for Latino students, by working within the educational system to create positive change. The goal is to empower Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through college and career readiness. The program focuses on four pillars: Leveraging Personal and Cultural Assets, Excelling in Education, Serving the Community, and Developing Leadership Skills. As STMS LIA students prepare to meet the goals of this elective, they recently got a visit from Dr. Jose Enriquez, Founder and CEO of Latinos in Action. His purpose was to have one on one interaction with all LIA classes and share his story to inspire and motivate students to reach their dreams. Many of our LIA students were able to relate to Dr. Enriquez’s experience, who is an immigrant born in El Salvador and grew up in east Los Angeles. He attributes much of his success to his hard-working mother who sacrificed everything to give him and his siblings a better life. Currently, Mr. Enriquez is living his dream as the CEO of Latinos In Action (www.latinosinaction.org), a non-profit organization he has built from the ground up since 2001. “Our youth need us, they are my heroes, they are our future,” said Jose. “There is no use in having a Ph.D. if I don’t use it to help my people.” His visit helped LIA students gear up to help others. In LIA, students will get involved in serving the community. Each LIA student gains real-life leadership experience by participating in student-lead service, social and

n a sea of uncertainty, consistency is a necessary component to not only survive, but thrive. For the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Middle and High School at the Academic Village, that consistency is embedded into what has been our motto since our inaugural year in 2000: ‘College, Citizenship, Community.’ While both ‘college’ and ‘citizenship’ are the guiding principles of our curriculum, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in ‘Community’. Nestled in the heart of the City of Pembroke Pines, ranked one of Realtor.com’s top ten best family-friendly suburbs of 2021, we are committed to ensure the success of our community composed of enthusiastic, caring teachers, civic-minded students, and involved parents. The 2020-2021 school year posed many challenges, both academic and social/emotional. Our PPCHS administrators, counselors, and teachers rolled up their sleeves to create ways to become closer as a community and meet those challenges head on. The Oasis, a socialemotional learning course, was created to reach out to students and meet the unspoken needs that sometimes create barriers to learning. The students in the Spanish Honor Society, Math Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta), and National Honor Society offered free peer tutoring. Through student lead clubs like Village Mentors, Chorus Club, and Relay for Life students expanded their community reach to help our global community with drives for much needed supplies to some of the most impacted places in the country and the world. Our Academic Village Middle School continued their work in Haiti, collecting money and organizing supplies for a school they have helped build and continue to sponsor. Our focus on community and meeting students’ needs has given our students license

asadena Lakes Elementary (PLE) is an exceptional school. This year, as a part of our ongoing equity and diversity strategy, PLE will be focused on neurodiversity and helping students to make positive learning gains. So, what is PLE’s response to the increase in prevalence of neurodiversity in our school? We have a special program that caters to the educational needs of students with mild to moderate autism (ASD). In this special program, some students diagnosed with ASD are educated in self-contained classrooms with a small teacher to student ratio and receive intensive instructions. In addition, we have intensive and specialized Pre-K classes for children identified with various abilities. Research supports early intervention as the best way to improve learning challenges for neurodivergent learners. We regularly progress monitor all students, whether in the

to thrive. During a school year that posed so many new and formidable challenges, our school was ranked #1 of 18 - Best Charter Middle AND High School in Broward County, #4 of 333 - Best Charter Middle Schools in Florida and #15 of 130 - Best Charter High Schools in Florida, based on 2021 Niche rankings. In addition, our FSA passing rate, by and large, exceeded the county and state, with a 6% increase from our 2019 English/Language Arts performance. In standardized examinations for our most rigorous programs, including Cambridge AICE and Advanced Placement courses, our students met or exceeded national and international averages. Many of our high school students have been recognized as College Board National Recognition Program Scholars, based on their remarkable academic achievements and outstanding performance on the PSAT and/or AP. challenge and receives $500 to continue making a difference in the community. Modern Movement, led by Deanne Reynolds, is formed by a group of middle school students who have a passion for dance. The group have performed holiday dances at nursing homes for senior citizens and have served as the opening performance for PPCS State of Charter and for the event Raising Positive Children. The Lead4Change Student Leadership Program teaches students leadership lessons which include skills such as critical thinking, problemsolving, communication and collaboration. Students work to develop a service project that addresses a need in their community using these skills. Modern Movement purpose is to dance to inspire the community. “The reason we joined the Modern Movement club at my school was because we love to dance. It is one of our favorite forms of self-expression, and we dance regularly outside of school,” says Kayla Agudelo. “Through this club, we hoped to choreograph and perform dances that would inspire and uplift the community. Our involvement in the club also taught us how to work together, learn from each other and support one

embroke Lakes Elementary celebrated Peace Week with a variety of activities that equipped students with necessary lifelong skills. During the week, students were given an opportunity to artistically display their vision of peace with a poster contest. Students also took a Peace Pledge acknowledging the basic foundational principles for peace and promising to do their part to maintain peace at Pembroke Lakes Elementary for all. These practical activities made way for students to engage in more profound activities later in the week. To promote a sense of community and unity, students engaged in “Start with Hello” icebreaker activities during lunch across grade levels and classes. Smiles, laughter and “me too” filled the cafeteria as students shared their favorite places to visit. Students also utilized “would rather” answers and discussed the superhero power they wish they possessed. These “Start with Hello” icebreaker activities empowered students to end social isolations and ensure students have

another throughout this creative expression that we are so passionate about. Whenever an opportunity arose, we jumped at the chance to use our talents to bring joy and encouragement to others,” says Kylin Reynolds. Modern Movement had another opportunity to serve the community at our school’s first ever Dance Marathon event to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Our school was proud to be the first and only middle school in Broward County to host this type of fundraiser for such a good cause. Our dancers immediately came together and created a fun, upbeat dance for the kids to enjoy. Moving forward, our plan is to continue to work as a team to create uplifting dance performances and do our part in spreading a message of hope and making the world a better place, one move and one dance at a time. the aptitude to be more socially involved with classmates. At the end of the week, students participated in Chalk for Peace. Students transformed Pembroke Lakes Elementary’s sidewalks into masterpieces of peaceful images and messages. “Our students have experienced much difficulty in the past year. Engaging students in Peace Week activities provides us with a means to discuss the importance of peace in theory and practice,” Ms. Fultz, School Guidance Counselor, commented regarding the practical activities students engaged in. Throughout the week, Pembroke Lakes Elementary teachers and staff emphasized that every student has a role to play, each school day, in building a peaceful learning environment and resolving conflict appropriately when differences arise. roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is excited to announce the names of 41 Semifinalists to be considered for a National Merit Scholarship award in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalists standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning a Merit Scholar title. High school juniors entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring and summer of 2022. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 220 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specific criteria. In addition, about 180 competitive public and private colleges and universities will finance 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. National Merit Scholarship winners for 2022 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 362,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title. Congratulations to all the BCPS students named 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists! Here are the Semifinalists for Pembroke Pines Schools: Charles W. Flanagan High School: Jaleyna S. Lawes and Angelina M. Rodriguez. West Broward High School: Zachary I. Morris

anther Run Elementary is excited to announce a new leader and a new program for the 2021-2022 school year. Mrs. Moraima del Sol took the reins at Panther Run Elementary School this fall with excitement and determination. Mrs. del Sol is a long time resident of the Pembroke Pines/Miramar area and taught at Silver Lakes Elementary School for 14 years. She has 23 years of experience in Broward County Schools as a teacher and Assistant Principal and now brings her passion for educating elementary students to the Principalship. She is enthusiastic to expand afterschool clubs at Panther Run Elementary, with the newest one being the STEMETTES. The club STEMETTES is a Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics club created by Panther Run Elementary teacher, Mrs. Roulhac, for girls in grades 3 through 5. The girls are being exposed to S.T.E.M. projects by way of the Engineer Design Process. The girls will be reading S.T.E.M. literature and exploring and interacting with female S.T.E.M. professionals. “Many girls come to elementary school with little or no experience with tinkering, building with LEGOs or helping parents repair household items,” states Mrs. Roulhac. Girls may also have received

“P

eace is possible around the world, and let it begin with children,” said Quincy Jones. Silver Palms Elementary students are leading the way! Spreading peace, love, kindness and respect is vital to our school community. Teachers, staff, parents, and students work together to actively engage students in activities that promote peace. Our children spent a week celebrating peace! To foster a sense of community and togetherness, students teamed up to spread the news about how important it is to be ambassadors of peace. Sharing inspiring quotes during morning announcements encouraged their peers to start each day on a peaceful path. Throughout the week, while visiting classrooms, teachers could be seen engaging students in literature studies about peace. The insight our young ones shared about how important peace is to building healthy relationships and fostering a positive school culture was extraordinarily powerful! The messages that could be read on their Peace Pinwheels will ring true in our hearts for many years to come. “Love each other”, “Smile”, “Be a friend to a new student”, “Say hi” were among the many positive messages. The work we do as a community benefits our children now and will benefit our world far into the future. Moreover, we welcomed parents to witness our students’ hard work during Open House. Teachers took them on a journey through a day in the life of their child at Silver Palms Elementary. In addition to our parents seeing walls adorned with messages of kindness and peace, teachers shared information about the high-quality curriculum

spoken or unspoken messages about S.T.E.M. from their parents or others and that math and science careers are not for girls. Mrs. del Sol wants to change that. She believes many girls are missing out on opportunities by not being exposed to building, programming, and working with robotics and other S.T.E.M. activities in a school setting. And this club will expose our school’s female population to pathways to successful careers in the S.T.E.M. field by engaging them in the S.T.E.M. world at an early age. Mrs. Roulhac believes her job is to send the message that girls can do S.T.E.M. And Mrs. del Sol fully supports this endeavor. Her focus is to provide a risk-free environment where there is not competition other than doing your personal best. The emphasis is on learning and having fun while promoting teamwork. The activities and experiences that are offered to club members will range from twelve different engineering fields tied to twelve Disney Princesses, computer science activities, mining and biomedical engineering. Panther Run Elementary is located at 801 NW 172nd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. Their Principal is Moraima del Sol. They can be reached at (754) 323-6850.

and dynamic instructional teaching strategies implemented that enable our students to develop critical and creative thinking skills that give our students an edge. Finally, Silver Palms’ PTA Board and club sponsors hit the ground running! The few, the proud, and the very powerful PTA parents who give so freely of their time to support our students’ educational experiences are hard at work! Our school community is filled with Dolphin Pride as our PTA parents plan Fun Fridays, Family Nights, community outreach projects, and monthly grams. The funds raised through these events will go to support innovative programs that enhance our students’ educational experiences. For example, at that start of this year they funded Accelerated Reader, a web-based program that motivates students’ independent reading practice and develops a true love for reading. Our Robotics, SECME, Safety Patrols, News Crew, Debate, Chorus, and Math clubs are very busy recruiting students. The clubs and their sponsors enhance our students’ education by helping to improve students’ academic performance. They also allow children to discover new passions and hobbies, and the clubs nurture life skills that will benefit our children throughout their lives. We welcome you to come join the Silver Palms family and let your Dolphin pride shine! Silver Palms Elementary is located at 1209 NW 155th Avenue in Pembroke Pines. Their Principal is Irina Shearer. They can be reached at (754) 323-7450.
