Dear Readers,

I, for one, am thrilled that winter in Florida is about over! Temperatures in the 30’s - 40’s are not my idea of enjoyable unless I am skiing the slopes in Colorado. For me, all the beauty of living in Florida is enjoying our beaches and outdoor sports, activities and events for which I am physically and mentally ill-equipped to do when it is freezing and windy! Let’s be honest, we are spoiled in South Florida and 50° should always be our lowest temperature limit. So, Mother Nature, bring on the HEAT! This issue of Sports & Activities brings a few wonderful changes for our readers, along with the rise in temperatures. First, this February - April issue now features a special section for Spring Break & Summer Camps. Typically we would only have Spring Break Camps listed in our directory in February - April, then run one big summer camp issue in May. However, our readers and advertisers have given us the heads up that May is too late to introduce Summer Camps and by then the early registration discounts have passed. We listened and delivered! Please see the last purple tabbed section of this issue to see the many diverse camp offerings with sizable early registration discounts, and be sure to let them know where you found their ad! Our second change is that this will be my last issue as Publisher of the Weston Sports & Activities Directory. Please welcome Kim Kadel as the new Publisher/Licensee of Weston! Kim currently owns and publishes the Coral Springs/Parkland Sports & Activities Directory, and she has done an outstanding job building and growing that publication while making concrete connections in the community. This dynamic woman has great plans for the Weston Directory as well, as she grows her publishing business to two areas. Please feel free to contact her for any ideas or business involvement you may have for the future Weston issues. As with many changes, opportunities for growth present themselves. The Sports & Activities Directory currently serves 5 areas in Broward County and we are looking to grow to more! Opportunities are here right now to be your own publisher and licensee of a Sports & Activities Directory. We provide the knowledge, the tools and the training. You bring an entrepreneurial spirit, strong work ethic and a smile. Within 6 months, we will have you ready to distribute your first Sports & Activities Directory. We are also hiring 3-4 Representatives for any/all of our existing areas and 1-2 Corporate Account Executives. Requirements: Personable, Professional, Multi-Tasker with reliable transportation, basic computer skills, a willingness to learn and involve yourself with our communities. Contact MargotPuleri@gmail.com for more information on Licensing or Territory Positions. As the New Year unfolds our 16th year of publishing this unique directory, I’d like to take a minute to thank some of our longest and cherished advertisers who, through thick and thin, have been with us for well over a decade consistently! Their loyalty to us is a testament to how we target and reach the active family market with zero waste, yielding the most effective marketing results for their investment. So here are our top ten advertisers that have never missed an issue: Tag Gymnastics, Bons Orthodontics, Educando A America, The Swim Academy, Florida Super Stars, Bright & Smart Robotics & Engineering, Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center, A World of Knowledge, Gravity Gymnastics, and Broadway Kids! Thank you for letting us grow your business, it is an honor to work with you all! Wishing you all the best of health, happiness and success in 2018! My best to you,

Margot

Our group of physicians treats patients as individuals. Every patient is impacted by her medical problem in a unique way. To treat our patients correctly, we have to understand not only the medical condition, but also her perspective on the problem, her obligations and concerns about her family and work, and her goals for life. Only at this time are we ready to offer her the options that best suit her. Communicating all this and helping the patient make the best decision is the true art of medicine. uring the School Choice application window, parents and guardians may submit three applications – one in each of the following application categories: magnet programs, Nova schools and school reassignments. High-quality innovative programs, Career Technical Education (CTE) and Collegiate Academy options are also available by submitting a School Choice reassignment application. There is something for everyone: • Magnet Programs offer in-depth experiences in specific areas of interest. If you are interested in a magnet program at your assigned school, a School Choice application is not necessary. Please contact your assigned school for information on how to participate. • The Nova Campus provides four schools on one campus for kindergarten through twelfth grade students. • Reassignments allow attendance to a school that is not your assigned school.

n October, the IRS announced that contribution limits for 401(k)s will increase to $18,500 in 2018, up $500 from 2017. Participants 50 and older can save an additional $6,000 a year through what are characterized as “catch-up” contributions. If your annual income is $100,000, and you accept the premise of pre-tax retirement plans (that your income tax rates will be lower in retirement), the option to defer almost 20% of income each year to a 401(k) may seem like more than enough to provide a substantial retirement accumulation, as well as delivering an immediate tax deduction. But what if you’re earning $300,000, or $500,000 a year? If you’re committed to saving 20% of income, that’s $60,000 or $100,000 a year, far more than what can be accommodated by a 401(k). Faced with this lack of deferral capacity, many highly-compensated savers default to making a maximum 401(k) contribution, then placing the rest of their ongoing savings in a personal investment account, paying taxes each year on the interest, dividends and capital gains. If this seems like an inefficient way to accumulate long-term savings, maybe someone – you, your employer, or the financial professionals assisting you with wealth management – should entertain a conversation about non-qualified deferred compensation.

Deferral Options for High-Earners

Under most circumstances, income, whether in the form of wages, commissions or profits, is taxable in the year it is earned. But in some instances, US tax law allows workers to earn income today, yet defer the receipt of it to a later date. For example, contributions to a 401(k) are deferrals of income. Participants voluntarily put some of their income into a qualified plan, to be received (and taxed) at retirement. 401(k)s and similar qualified retirement plans are for the rank-and-file, and in some ways, discriminate against highly-compensated individuals (such as business

• Innovative Programs offer courses of study centered on specific themes. If you are interested in an innovative program at your assigned school, a School Choice application is not necessary. Please contact your assigned school for information on how to participate. • Career Technical Education (CTE) Pathways prepare high school students for post-secondary enrollment and apprenticeships. If you are interested in a CTE program at your assigned high school, a School Choice application is not necessary. Please contact your assigned high school for information on how to participate. • Collegiate Academies offer high school students the opportunity to earn their high school diploma and their Associates in Arts degree. To apply for School Choice, go to the Broward Schools website at www.browardschols.com or copy this link: https://webapp.browardschools. com/onechoiceproject/StudentSearch.aspx in your browser.

owners, top-tier executives, and sales reps). But high-earners may be able to enter into individual customized deferral arrangements with their employer. These deferrals fall under the broad heading of Non-Qualified Deferred Compensation (NQDC) plans.

NQDC Basics

Per Investopedia, “A NQDC is a plan created by an employer to enable select employees to defer compensation that they have a legally binding right to receive.” There are several formats for NQDC plans (sometimes referred to as “409A plans” for the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs their use), but all NQDCs have some common features: • The plan is in writing. • The employee makes an irrevocable election to defer compensation prior to the year in which it will be earned. • The plan specifies, at the time of the deferral, the amount(s) to be paid in the future, and the circumstances which will trigger payment. There are six permissible “triggering events” for payment: an end-date, separation from service (e.g., retirement), a change in ownership or control of the company, disability, death or an unforeseen emergency. In most NQDCs, the deferred payments will include a calculated future value, often in the form of interest or investment returns credited to the deferral. Other benefits may be part of the deferred compensation agreement, such as life insurance or disability benefits for the employee.

he 2017-2018 school year has brought many new and exciting challenges to our students and staff here at Tropical Elementary School! Since the beginning of the year, our wonderful teachers have worked diligently with the students on the Florida Standards. In addition to our academic rigor throughout the year, Tropical students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular clubs and specials classes that are a part of their daily schedule. In October, several students from Tropical and their Girl Scout Troop volunteered their time to help clean up the leaves and debris on Tropical’s campus that was left over from Hurricane Irma. Those students were Ashley, Dalia, Emma, Jenna, Olivia, Rachel, and Sianna. Tropical Elementary also participated in Art in the Park in November., and the holiday time saw more giving spirit from Tropical’s students and staff. We made food and other donations to many families over Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Mr. Anderson, Tropical Elementary’s Principal, along with the Tropical Jump Rope Club, other teachers and staff, helped the City of Plantation kick-off the holiday season by appearing in the annual “It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation” Holiday Parade! Tropical Elementary School is located at 1500 SW 66th Avenue, Plantation 33317. Call (754) 323-7750 or visit their website at www.tropicalelementary.net.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTAR OF THE QUARTER

A

A PERFECT 36 ON THE ACT!

s we ring in 2018 Huntington Learning Center and Sports & Activities Directory are proud to introduce you to a new Academic Superstar. The Academic Superstar Program gives students recognition for their achievements. There are different types of students with different academic struggles and successes. Here is one fantastic success story. Meet Saahil Saahil is a good student, who was very afraid of the ACT and put a lot of pressure on himself. His starting score was right around the national average of 21and by the time he was finished with his program at Huntington, he had successfully scored a PERFECT 36. Saahil now has opportunities to get into any college he wants to and he is looking forward to making that decision. Here’s what Saahil had to say about Huntington “Both of my sisters attended Huntington for SAT/ACT test prep, so I knew what to expect. Once I started at Huntington, it became a lot more than I expected and Huntington Learning Center really opened up a whole other potential for me and my future. I’m so grateful for the people in the center and the teachers I was able to work with”. Here are a few words from Saahil’s Mom “I’ve had several years’ worth of experience with Huntington Learning Center, and they have certainly had a positive impact on my life. From my daughter, Sarah, attending Huntington Learning Center over five years ago to my son— Saahil—recently enrolled, I can say that Huntington tutoring has brought my children to the forefront of their potential and ability to succeed.” About the Huntington Exam Prep Program that got Saahil the Perfect Score Huntington Learning Center offers a comprehensive individualized program for both ACT and SAT Prep. The process begins with a full length exam as an evaluation to pinpoint each student’s strengths and weaknesses. A program

is then designed for that individual student that will help maximize their score on their official test. The certified teachers will teach the student content and strategies, and throughout the program the student will take additional practice tests to document progress and adjust areas of focus to maximize success.

SCHOOLS ollowing a lack luster season, the PHS football team made a comeback. Apparently, the cliché saying, “Everything old is new again,” is true. After last year’s sub-par season, the Plantation High School Varsity Football Team is back on top. The PHS Colonels have not only a nine and one season record, but they also made it to the district playoffs and are qualified as the Top At Large Seed in the region. According to Coach Davis the team’s improvement is based off their own hard work. “Traditionally we have a good football team here at Plantation High School, so we wanted to go back to the old ways of working hard and taking it one game at a time. Once we started playing and saw some success, the team got the motivation they needed to keep going,” said Davis. The team racked up many awards this season, including the coveted Plantation Mayor’s Cup. Another accomplishment earned during this football season was the coach, Steven Davis, being named the Sun Sentinel “Broward Coach of the Year.” Coach Davis stated, “I would really like to dedicate that award to the staff; it is really a testament to what they have done. I am just one person - they do the nuts and bolts job of coaching the boys on an everyday basis.” Team Athletic Director, Mr.Banks said, “It is

great that he received this recognition, he is a great coach that gels well with the players.” This accolade follows Davis’ return to coach the Colonels after taking a year off. According to Coach Davis he decided to leave because “after nineteen years, it came to a point where I just wanted to take a step back.” Under his leadership five students were invited to play in the 21st annual BCAA all-star football game; Fabian Smith - 12th grade, Eddie John -12th grade, Jamari Sweet -12th grade, Rachard Branch -12th grade, Robzel Sylvester -12th grade. For this game, the best players from high schools all over the county are selected and split into two teams. The players from Plantation High were drafted to the Northern team along with other players from Northern Broward County. The North defeated the South with a 13-7 victory. After a season of wins, the Colonels show no signs of slowing down. Coach Davis said, “We don’t like to set goals, but we do focus on certain events as they come. We always say focused on the root, not the fruit. We focus on every phase of the year right now we are focused on our off-season programming feel. When we do it this way, the big goals take care of themselves and we don’t miss steps in the process.”

Trying to go to college in the state of Florida is getting

54

expensive. The average cost can be $4,500 per year for the actual public university courses. Then schools add fees that bring it to an average of $6,500 per year. Students say books are another $1,000 per year. And parents say to add in $10,000 per year for on-campus room and board. According to the online site College Calc, when you add in extra costs for living expenses, and travel to and from home, the average yearly public university costs are about $20,000 per year. There are ways to lower the out of pocket expenses of college for your student. Many parents began a Florida Prepaid College fund. The U.S. government also allows families to apply for FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Based on a family’s economic situation, a student may qualify for money to attend college that will not have to be paid back and may qualify for some loans which may need to be paid back. If you have a college bound student, there is money available to attend college. Don’t forget about the Bright Futures Scholarship through the state of Florida for grades, service hours and SAT/ACT scores. To supplement the above opportunities, students can also apply for SCHOLARSHIPS! Some scholarships are worth $500 to $1,000 and are paid directly to the university, which will help reduce the cost of that year of college for your child. Other scholarships may offer $4,000 to $25,000, or even a full-ride to the university. Senior Zhane Cleare is one of 918 students in the nation to be awarded the QuestBridge Scholarship! Over 900 exceptional high school seniors were awarded full four-year scholarships and admission to top colleges through QuestBridge. This is a national program that pairs high-achieving, low income high school seniors with full scholarships to the nation’s top colleges. From a pool of 15,606 applicants, from which QuestBridge chose 5,759 as finalists; 918 outstanding students have been selected as this year’s College Match Scholarship Recipients. Zhane will be attending the University of Pennsylvania for Nursing. Another senior, Ashleigh Plasencia, scored in the top 99 percentile on her PSAT test to make her a National Merit Scholar! The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships through the College Board PSAT test. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT test their

junior year, which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year. The top 4,000 scores out of the 1.6 million test takers will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship. Along with that money, every college in our state will offer a National Merit Scholar a FULL RIDE for a bachelor’s degree and two schools have even offered our winner a free graduate degree as well. Congratulations to Ashleigh Plasencia who has many doors and offers open due to her academic accomplishments while at South Plantation High School. There are hundreds of scholarships available to all students by logging onto their Naviance account, a site South Plantation High School is so fortunate to offer its students. The two students featured in this article earned scholarships along with many others in their senior class as of December. There is still have another half a year to go and many more scholarship opportunities are up for grabs. Learn more at South Plantation High School! (754) 323-1950. NEW RIVER MIDDLE SCHOOL MARINE SCIENCE MAGNET PROGRAM N

ew River Middle School has been a Marine Science Magnet Program since 1997 with students applying for the program from across Broward County. The goal of the Marine Science Magnet Program is to expose students to environmental issues right here in their backyard, South Florida; and foster a sense of marine stewardship through our emphasize on marine education and real world applications. Through our Marine Science classes, students learn all aspects of the marine environment. They learn physical and chemical oceanography such as currents, tides, and water chemistry along with biological, animals and plants. In addition to the marine science concepts, students learn about marine technology used to explore the depths of the ocean, such as ROV (remotely operated vehicles). Students at New River have the opportunity to learn in the classroom with hands-on activities and outside in the environment with field trips snorkeling the coral reefs, kayaking through the mangroves, and shark tagging with Nova Southeastern University’s Guy Harvey Research Institute. Getting students out in their environment learning about it and ways to protect “their backyard” is vital for not only the Marine Science program, but the future of our planet.

One major project that brings together all our disciplines in our Interdisciplinary Marine Theme Project, is where our 6th graders are looking at the impact of pollution on our coastal waterways and beaches. They are working through all their classes to research the impacts of pollution, create projects to share their knowledge and implement change in order to preserve and protect our local waterways and beaches. Students are cleaning up the beach; tallying up the results for Coastal Clean-up database; graphing the data; writing stories and creating posters to promote clean-ups and environmentally friendly practices; creating marine “trash” art, and creating up-cycling projects, which takes old items creating new products. Through all these activities students are learning about their local environment, sharing their knowledge and passion, along with creating real change in their community. It is just one on of the MANY activities at New River Middle School – Marine Science Magnet Program. If you are interested in more information about New River Middle School, please visit newriver.browardschools.com or call (754) 323-3600.

An opportunity for a voice to be heard is a gift that can echo exponentially into

58

the minds and hearts of others, but the true gift of the opportunity is to the person with the voice that needs to be heard. Louder Than a Bomb Florida is a poetry platform for our youth to express their feelings, thoughts, fears, confusion, dreams, frustration and hope to listening ears. It is a month long competition where individuals and school-based teams share their stories with students from all over Florida and in front of panels of judges. The impact of these works of self expression is, without a doubt, louder than a bomb. Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) was founded in 2001, through the Young Chicago Authors, by Kevin Coval (YCA Artistic Director) and Anna West. LTAB is now the largest youth poetry festival in the world, featuring more than 120 schools representing over 100 zip codes within the Chicago-land area. LTAB was created to give Chicago youth a platform to share their stories. The festival has since become a “bridge” for young people from many different backgrounds to come together and find a common ground through their narratives. Building upon the amazing impact the Omari Hardwick Bluapple Poetry Network has had on area youth since launching the program in 2013, football legend Jason Taylor and his Jason Taylor Foundation took the ball and ran with it in Florida. Beginning in September of 2014, teachers and students from schools as far south as Homestead and as far north as Port St. Lucie, began working, learning, creating and sharing within their classrooms, in after-school clubs and through various teen open mics throughout South Florida, developing safe spaces for individual and collective expression on their respective campuses and in their communities. The culmination of this work manifested in an 11-day festival in April 2015, which was highlighted by a friendly competition taking place in dynamic venues throughout Broward County. A diverse group of students, parents, administrators and community members representing nearly 40 schools participated in LTABFLA, creating authentic

narratives to reimagine the self and one another while developing mutual respect and tolerance for difference. Funding from Nova Southeastern University, UPS, and countless other corporate and individual supporters has assisted the Jason Taylor Foundation in supporting the schools’ efforts by providing year-round, in-class and after-school instruction, which culminates annually in this poetry festival. “The Jason Taylor Foundation is dedicated to utilizing the art of the spoken word to help provide teens from diverse backgrounds a common vehicle for written and performance based selfexpression,” said Seth Levit, Executive Director of the Jason Taylor Foundation. Four years later, Louder Than a Bomb Florida is about to launch it’s 4th Annual statewide poetry competition. Taking place from March 26 - April 21st, the preliminary, quarterfinals, semifinals then finals will be happening throughout Florida. Although high school registration will close February 2nd, there is time to volunteer time or money to this exceptional program, or purchase tickets to witness and experience the Louder Than a Bomb poetry.

“A Mic. A Stage. A Pen. A Page. This is what the art of poetry begins with – the rest is legendary.”
