Dear Readers, Welcome to the beginning of the end of the 2017 - 2018 school year! The last month of testing, grades, graduations, homework, awards ceremonies and hectic schedules is here. Bring on the summer! We are all ready. We know you will enjoy browsing though the summer camp and events sections to find fun things for your children to do while making new friends and hopefully, learning some new things along the way. While looking through this issue, keep in mind that we provide an abundant amount of information and resources to help you make decisions about after school programs, fall sports and family activities. Our next issue will not reach your hands until school begins again on Wednesday, August 15th. For our readership throughout Broward County, the tragedy that befell Marjory Stoneman Douglas has been so difficult to absorb. For the entire MSD community and those families who lost their loved ones, our team is heartbroken for you all. We wish for you and our country that their losses will effect a mass set of changes that will increase our children’s safety and security in the classrooms and beyond. All of our publications in Broward County this issue have paid tribute on our School Section Openers to the students and administration we lost. #MSDSTRONG We know there is more to do. With our readership community, we hope to work together to be a part of the solution to end school violence, recognize students who need emotional support and/or intervention, and put politicians in place who will listen to their constituents and make the necessary legislative changes. As we are now celebrating 16 years of publishing the Sports & Activities Directory, we have seen much growth and change. We began in 2002 with the first issue of the Weston Sports & Activities, and grew to 5 area publications in Broward County. Throughout our growth, we have brought on licensees of our publication who have taken on the entire job of publishing their own directories. Kim Kadel is our licencee/publisher for Coral Springs & Parkland, and effective this issue, she has taken over the Weston Sports & Activities Directory. Her passion, dedication and love of the community connections has brought her great respect and success! I am thrilled to see her excitement to do the same in the Weston community and I know she will add a great amount of value for our readers and advertisers. Congratulations, Kim! As always, we welcome your feedback to improve and we ask that when you call or visit any of our advertisers, you let them know you found them in our directory. Feel free to submit photos, articles and any information you would like to share about sports, activities, events, schools and organizations in our areas. We do our best find space for anything of value to our readers. Wishing you a safe, healthy and happy summer! See you out at the parks! My best to you,

Margot

Celebrating 10 Years of Achievement

s Broadway Kids Studio celebrates it’s 10 year anniversary, we reflect on the positive impact a performing arts studio can have on a community and the future of the talented young students who currently attend and have attended it’s program. Broadway Kids Studio opened its doors in the summer of 2008, with the hopes of inspiring young performers to follow their dreams in music, dance, and drama. “BKS means the world to me. It’s like belonging to a family. It’s a place that prepared me to seek a career in the arts. The studio gave me the training and confidence to develop into the performer I am today,” said Emily Alderman, a Freshman majoring in Dance at Florida State University. What started as a 3-room studio encompassing 1700 square feet, grew to state-of-the-art 11-room studio spanning over 8,000 square feet.

The facility houses a recording studio, multiple large dance and private lesson studios, a black box theater, and a rock band rehearsal space. The use of a large air wall gives the studio flexibility to combine two large dance studios into an area capable of replicating a large performance stage. The ability to translate directly from class to the stage has helped both large scale musical productions and the BKS dance competition team. A multiple time world dance championship qualifying team, BKS took over 70 dancers to the world stage last year. Throughout the year, BKS students can be seen participating with their local schools in Thespians, Spring Musicals, FMEA All State, and Disney’s Candlelight Procession. The training they receive from BKS is imperative to the success they achieve at school, both in the arts and academically. “I have

always had the artistic seed inside of me. BKS watered me and gave me sunlight to grow into the artistic tree I have become,” said Sergio De La Espriella, a Senior at the University of Florida majoring in Musical Theater. Upon graduation, Sergio is heading to the Charleston Stage Company in South Carolina for a one month actor in residency program. Most recently, BKS performers have been seen dancing at halftime and performing with live Rock Band sets at Miami Heat games, Shops at Pembroke Gardens, the Davie Orange Blossom Festival, and other community events. Carolena Albert, an intern at Grammy University, and Senior studying Popular and Commercial Music at Loyola University said, “I love that I was constantly surrounded by music and had the space available to me to be able to create, collaborate, receive

constructive advice, and most of all express myself.” As a training facility to hundreds of performers every week, we are proud to see our students pursue their passion after they graduate high school. Diego De La Espriella, currently a Sophomore at Oklahoma University studying Acting and Dramaturgy said, “BKS reminds me of home. BKS fosters an environment that promotes positive connection and love.” Carter Nash, a University of Miami Musical Theater major, said “My favorite part of BKS had been the performances…to be able to walk on that stage confidently and put up a performance that we were proud of is a feeling I don’t think I will be able to justify with words.” Carter can be seen in the upcoming production of the Pirates of Penzance at The Jerry Herman Ring Theater. Victor Vazquez is currently a student at Marymount University (NYC) studying Theater Performance. Victor started his theater journey 9 years ago when BKS was in its infancy. Victor, who was seen in many BKS productions while in middle school and high school said, “BKS prepared me for studying musical theater in college because it gave me the skills and experience I needed, and the knowledge to apply them so I could continue down this path.”

Alumni are now studying music, theater, and dance all over the United States: Suzie Fyodorov is at Tish School of the Arts at NYU, Victor Vazquez, is at Marymount in NY, Emily Alderman is at Florida State University, Diego de la Espriella is at Oklahoma University, Gabriel Szajnert and Carter Nash, are at the University of Miami, Carolena Albert is at Loyola University, and Valentina Rodriguez is at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Valentina, who is studying Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology said it best, “Once a Broadway Kid always a Broadway Kid. I owe them everything I have. It was and still is a second home to me.” With over 350 currently enrolled students, the future is shining bright for these performers. Broadway Kids Studio provides training in dancing, singing, acting and instruments. Coupled with performance opportunities, this training translates to an unmatched competitive advantage for BKS students. A couple of BKS seniors in the spotlight this year include Caroline Cuevas and Alyssa Hartley. Caroline is in the midst of college music auditions and has attended Broadway Kids Studio for 7 years. Her favorite part of BKS is, “The people, Michelle Ameerally and Raul Rivera especially, they have been my mentors and supporters.”

Alyssa Hartley is starting her BFA in Musical Theater at LIU-Post in the fall. “Theater is something that is supposed to bring people who love to perform together to produce beautiful pieces of art, and I truly believe the BKS embodies that. At BKS, we all come together for the same reason and form lifelong bonds, even if we are only in one show together,” said Alyssa. All programs at BKS sell out every year with lengthy waiting lists the norm for the After School Program. The program is rich in a variety of classes, disciplined instruction, and unmatched attention to details. Enrollment opens at the beginning of May for the 2018/2019 school year. Anyone interested should take advantage of the few spots that are available each year. Summer Camp this year is sure to be popular once again with the studio performing 101 Dalmatians Kids, Jungle Book Kids, Mary Poppins Jr., and School of Rock. In addition, weekly Summer Dance Camps are available. Enrollment is open now and spots are filling up quickly! A sell out for the 10th consecutive year is certain. irror Lake Elementary students have been very busy academically, as well as engaged in enrichment activities this spring. Our ICON Club (I Can Overcome Negativity) boys modeled their dress for success suits and ties, our Kindergarten students welcomed new incoming kindergartners during our Kindergarten Round Up event and the MLE Art Club students had their art work displayed at the KC Wright building. Our students work very hard and enjoy all the activities offered throughout the year. We also held our 3rd annual Tennis Tournament and Auction to help raise funds for technology. The turnout was spectacular! In April, Mirror Lake students held their “Light It Up Blue” day to recognize Autism Awareness Month, 5th graders participated in their GRADE Ceremony, and April 6th was our Diversity Day, to name a few of our events that month. Students involvement in these events and activities help keep our students involved and connected so they grow and thrive academically and socially as well as develop a strong sense of community. SIX SIGNS YOUR CHILD NEEDS TUTORING R

arely do children sail through school from kindergarten through twelfth grade without encountering a few challenges along the way. However, there are typical academic hurdles that teach children about perseverance and asking for help, and then there are big struggles that need intervention. How can you recognize a problem that requires more than just a bit of additional effort on your child’s part? Here are six signs that your child likely needs tutoring help: 1. POOR STUDY SKILLS – Is your child helpless when it comes to getting going on homework each night? Does he or she struggle to prioritize homework and waste time? Study habits are not inherent for most students and must be taught and practiced. Take a close look at things like your child’s notes and in-class worksheets and watch how he or she approaches homework each night. 2. A SHARP DECLINE IN GRADES – Occasional bad grades happen even to the best of students and are nothing to get overly concerned about, but grades that get worse quickly might indicate that your child lacks basic skills and is having a hard time keeping up in the classroom. 3. HOMEWORK TAKING AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF TIME – A good rule of thumb is 20 minutes of homework per night in first grade and 10 minutes additional per grade thereafter. If your fourth-grader is spending over an hour on homework each night but the grades don’t reflect the effort, you should investigate. 4. LOTS OF TIME-WASTING – Does your child procrastinate and have difficulty getting started on homework just about every night? These are indicators of a child who is either avoiding work because he or she doesn’t understand something or has a learning issue.

P

lantation Elementary has had an amazing and memorable 2017-2018 school year. Our skilled teachers have kept our students engaged and enlightened from the beginning to the end of the school day. Plantation Elementary had the privilege to host 4 STEM Museum Nights. Each Museum night, there were a plethora of scientific themes and concepts that are illustrated and brought to life. Our students took pride in showing off their wonderful projects and exhibits. In October we had our annual Literacy parade extravaganza. Our students and teachers dressed as their favorite literary character. Even our own principal, Ms. Pitter dressed as Little Red Writing Hood. We had a terrific time and we look forward to our parade next year. We had the honor to host Miami Dolphin Cornerback, Alterraun Verner for our literacy/

5. ANGER AND APATHY – Every child gets frustrated by homework sometimes but take note of excessive exasperation or anxiety. If your child used to enjoy school and now seems uninterested or upset whenever you try to help with homework, it’s time to explore what’s going on behind the scenes. 6. AVOIDANCE – Regular declarations of feeling too sick to go to school. Dismissiveness when school comes up in conversation. Skipped homework (or frequent claims that no homework was assigned). All of these examples are signs that your child is losing interest in school. That avoidance could very well stem from school struggles. Open the lines of communication with your child to try to understand what’s actually happening. Obviously the biggest “red flag” that your child needs help in school is a poor report card, but there are plenty of indicators along the way. If you suspect that your child is having problems in school in between report cards, the first thing you should do is schedule a time to speak to the teacher to learn more about what he or she sees. You should also call Huntington. We can help identify the root of any school problems and design a targeted program of instruction that will help your child close any skill gaps and rebuild his or her confidence. ach year the principal at Plantation Park Elementary challenges the students during their annual “Principal’s Reading Challenge.” “Administrators do all kinds of crazy things to get students to read,” Ms. Gittelman, school principal, adds. In the past she dressed up as their school mascot in an owl costume, was wrapped like a mummy in cheesecloth, turned into a live ice-cream sundae, kissed an alligator, rocked out with a rock band, collected books for children in Plantation General Hospital, and got squirt with silly string. This year, the school emphasized science throughout the year. The theme was “Mad Science!” The Museum of Science and Discovery presented a crazy chemistry demonstration, which involved the school administrators! The majority of the student body participated and met their annual reading goals. The top reader was 5th grader, Grace Finnerty. She joined the other top readers in each grade for a special lunch with the administration and Reading Coach. “As educators, we all hope that students find the books that will pull them into reading and keep them interested in literacy. The more they read, the greater the chance they will fall in love with reading. The challenge itself encourages children to turn off the television and read,” says Ms. Gittelman. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school (754) 323-7150. Plantation Park Elementary is located at 875 SW 54th Avenue, Plantation 33317. SCHOOLS provide new and interactive ways to learn key content. The campus programs are conducted during normal instructional time. In the classroom experience, Cry of the Water, students used Florida’s ecosystems as case studies to facilitate their awareness and empower them to make conscious decisions about protecting the environment. In this program students studied challenges that young fish face in making it from egg to maturity, the connection between agriculture and climate change, and how plants can help mitigate water pollution. Adrian Hienz, of Sunrise said that the program helped reinforce the idea that “environmental protection really affects everyone.” For the second step, students traveled to Hugh Birch State Park to learn more about local flora, fauna, and ecosystems and participated in an interactive food web. They engaged in sustainable fishing practices before taking part in ecosystem restoration by removing exotic species and helping to restore one of the parks butterfly gardens. “Pulling weeds in the park allowed me to observe firsthand the impacts of invasive species on native species.” said Alley Schneid of Fort Lauderdale. The fishing activity was popular with the students. “By using what I learned about tying and baiting a hook, I caught a fish, which made me feel both accomplished and successful,” said Jillian Melinek from Plantation. For the final part, the teens returned to their own school campus where they engaged in habitat stewardship up close and personal. After learning about Florida-friendly landscaping, students transformed an area on campus that needed remediation into a “NatureScape” featuring native plants that are both wildlife and people friendly. This effort was part of a larger goal to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and provide habitat resources for pollinators and other imperiled species, while serving as a model for others who wish to make a difference in their own homes. “The hands-on aspect of this project was valuable to my everyday life because I have been able to take what I learned at school and use it in my garden at home,” concluded Jacob Ewert of Sunrise.

Training students to be educated habitat stewards has been the primary purpose of the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet at South Plantation High for the last 15 years. Community partners recognize the value of the teen-based workforce and have collaborated with the Paladin staff to put this knowledge into practice. “It’s important to involve partners because teachers are teaching us the information, but partners are helping us apply it with hands-on experiences,” says junior Hallie Hodder of Fort Lauderdale. Personnel at the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA!) now work side-by-side with students in all grades to help the teens expand their knowledge base to become more accomplished stewards. Currently juniors in Experimental Science 3 are involved with a three-part, hands-on program that takes place on campus and off site. “Working with students from South Plantation High is a unique opportunity to give the students the tools, knowledge and inspiration to be the change they seek in the world,” explains Kristen Hoss, Executive Director of YEA! Starting in the fall, she along with other YEA! personnel provided an interactive program where Experimental Science 3 students used Florida’s ecosystems as case studies to examine the challenges and opportunities that local species and organisms face. “This program trilogy takes the students from the theoretical to the practical and shows them in very tangible and personal ways what the issues are and how they can actually make a difference in solving them,” teacher Jody Berman explained. The hands-on experience consisted of two school-based experiences and one off-site field trip delivered by YEA! All programs tie directly to the curriculum and

Colonels Take Back The Mayor’s Cup From Paladins

P

en Pal letter writing may be a thing of the past, but two schools in Plantation have brought back the lost art. Thanks to the brain storm and efforts of Barbara Clair Kettler and her toy poodle pet therapy service dog, Chessie, members of the Share-A-Pet organization and the Pawsitive Reading Program, 2nd and 3rd graders from Peters and Tropical Elementary Schools have been writing letters back and forth for the past two school years. The letters were picked up and delivered by Clair and Chessie to the eagerly awaiting students. Writing letters not only improves the students’ handwriting, but also improves spelling, sentence structure, illustration, grammar and reading. Added bonuses that come with the pen pal program are developing communication skills with someone unknown, as well as imaginative and cognitive skills to try to identify and relate to their pen pal. It is a hands-on learning doing an activity they love! At the end of the school year, thanks to a grant which funded the activity, the pen pals got to meet each other and have a pizza party. This year, on April 6th, Tropical Elementary students took a bus to Peters Elementary school and were greeted to cheers, welcome posters and signs created by the pan pals. Therapy dogs, administration and teachers were all present and engaged in every second of the day. The pen pals were able to read their last letters of

when we needed it, and that put us back in the game.” The Colonels struck again in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs and added another in the fifth inning to make it 7-5. That’s all that the Colonels’ starting pitcher Cameron Vadnais needed. After a rough start to the game, Vadnais settled in the rest of the way, only allowing one hit after the second inning. “I was just trying to get into my groove, and once I did, I tried to stay focused to get the job done. Adrenaline started to kick in and got me through the rest of the game, and hopefully that carries the rest of the season for us,” said Vadnais, who threw for a complete game in the win. Paladins’ manager Trevor Chang-Leung said he felt his team settled after the early lead. “Any time we play this (Mayor’s Cup) game, it’s a dog fight,” Chang-Leung said. “We jumped on them early on, and got content. Guys weren’t committing to plays and making them. They did.” Plantation will look to carry this momentum through the remainder of the season and into the playoffs. Plantation High School is located at 6901 NW 16 Street, Plantation 33313. You may reach them at (754) 322-1850 and learn more at plantationhigh.browardschools.com/

the school year together, take a tour of the school and enjoy a pizza party! Kudos to Barbara Clair Kettler and the Share-A-Pet therapy organization who spear headed this educational and fun program! Ms. Barbara is a retired elementary school teacher who began training Chessie to become a pet therapy dog in 2008. With her education background and pet therapy work, she and Chessie made a natural transition to become part of the Pawsitive Reading Program at Tropical Elementary in 2010. Initially, this involved working with a few students at a time to improve their reading skills and included letter writing to Chessie, who always wrote back. It has now has evolved into working with entire classes from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. As a testament to the “positive” results, the Pawsitive Reading has grown to include many other owner/ pet reading teams at Tropical and Peters Elementary schools, and the pen pal program has grown to include 2nd and 3rd grade classes. fter losing The Mayor’s Cup in 2017, the Plantation Colonels got it back with a 7-5 win Monday night, March 19th, against the South Plantation Paladins. The annual rivalry game between the two schools stands for bragging rights not only between the two baseball teams, but across the entire school. Colonels’ manager Manny Aguilar was pumped up after the victory. “It’s exciting to bring this back to Plantation after losing it last year. This is a huge win for us, and swings the momentum our way for the rest of this season,” Aguilar said. The Colonels jumped on Paladins’ starter Jeffrey Cohick in the bottom half of the first inning. Back-to-back base hits by Jacob Lindermann and Cameron Vadnais and a walk to Antonio Cabrera filled the bases, they all came in off of errors. It didn’t take the Paladins long to get those runs back. South Plantation catcher Blake Butler doubled to lead off the the top of the second inning. Some Colonel miscues, along with some heads-up base running by South Plantation, gave the Paladins a 5-3 lead off several Plantation errors. The Colonels chipped away in the bottom of the third inning after a big RBI single by Manuel Paz. “I knew I had to do my job and drive in the run,” Paz said. “We came through
