WELCOME BACK to your Sports & Activities Directory! I hope everyone is happy, healthy and has been staying safe during this unusual time. We are glad to be back and are happy to engage with you again! I hope you’ve enjoyed our social media posts for virtual classes, activities & events. Like us on FaceBook to join our Plantation group @Sports&ActivitiesDirectoryPLANTATION to learn more about things happening around town for your family to enjoy. Welcome Back to School! We all look forward to settling in to our “new normal” with IN-PERSON learning and we hope you and your family will do so with ease. There are lots of great enrichment programs, extra-curricular activities and sports programs to choose from this fall, so I’m confident you will find the perfect fit. There is always something magical about the fall season. Children seem to grow over the summer and become more mature by the fall. It’s a new beginning to the start of a new school year. Some children have changed schools, moved on to middle school or high school, and older students may have started college. As exciting as the new school year can be, it can also be a scary time for students. We offer some great resources to help parents navigate the challenges their children may experience in our Health section. Sometimes it may be necessary to change schools or hire a tutor. You will find great options by paging through the School section at the end of the magazine. I’m thrilled to announce that the Fall issue brings me full-circle as your publisher and I couldn’t be happier to be here! Sign up for our monthly News Blast for updates on happenings around town, sports, activities, family recipes, health and more! Go to www.sportsandactivities.com and choose Plantation in the menu bar. If you have suggestions or photos you’d like to submit, I’ll gladly welcome them. Feel free to send an email or call, my contact information is on the left side of this page. I’d love to hear from you! Thank you for your readership and for your patronage to our clients, we can’t do what we do without you! Be sure to tell our advertisers you found them in Sports & Activities Directory! My best to you,

Dear Plantation Residents

8

Fall 2021 is here and I know I’m not the only one looking forward to those sunny, 75-degree days! Our city has been impacted by the coronavirus crisis, but let’s remember how far we’ve come as a community in staying safe. While some of our activities may not be able take place yet, we are able to host most of the events I know our residents will be excited to attend again. We look forward to welcoming newcomers and visitors to participate in and enjoy Plantation’s entertainment venues and all the activities we do have to offer! The Departments are working on events and annual activities in an attentive and conservative manner for our residents and visitors to safely enjoy again. Here are some activities to mark on your calendar. Seniors are welcomed to join us for a weekly Movie Night on Tuesdays, Bingo on Wednesdays and Game Time on Thursdays at the Jim Ward Community Center. The Plantation Athletic League (P.A.L) Youth fall sports registrations begin in September for Winter baseball, and in November for basketball, softball, lacrosse and travel baseball. In September we are hosting our annual 2021 Art Search. The Parks & Recreation Department is looking for volunteers. A Volunteer Orientation will be held on September 25th. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, be sure to contact JPetrovia@plantation.org to confirm your attendance. Some of our well-known and loved annual events will be returning as well! Bring the family to our Halloween and Safety Festival on October 16th, and The Trunk or Treat Event on October 31st. Our Community Garage Sale at Volunteer Park will be on October 17th. If you’re interested in participating in the Community Garage Sale, please contact the Parks & Recreation department at 954-452-2558. The Rock the Park Concert Series is scheduled to return on November 5th, and will continue on the first Friday of every month thru April 2022. The Annual Volunteer Firefighters BBQ is BACK on November 7th and the annual Holiday Parade will take place on November 20th. Do you prefer indoors activities? Programs such as Goju Karate, Learning to play the Piano, Snapology, Painting Lessons, Zumba and so much more are also available at our various Community Centers for the youth, adults and seniors. All information regarding classes can be found in the Plantation Recreation Quarterly, on the city’s website www.plantation.org or in our City Buildings. You may also keep an eye on the city’s social media pages for dates, times, locations and details on all events. Find us on FaceBook: @CityofPlantationFL; Twitter: @PlantationFLA and NextDoor: @CityofPlantation. Brighter days are ahead as we, as a community, continue to work together and adjust in fighting against the pandemic. Let’s continue to look forward, work together and embrace all the possibilities the Fall Season has to offer. I hope to see familiar faces, as well as new faces, around our city, enjoying life and the events we’re bringing to you.

Sincerely,

Mayor Lynn Stoner City of Plantation

A

s the Dog Days of Summer draw to a close we start making plans for our kids to return to school. New clothes, new school supplies, and new classes raise everyone’s excitement level just a little bit. And for those just starting school, what a fantastic opportunity to get them on the right track from the very beginning. While the Covid outbreak has given us much to think about, and some complex answers, here are a few safety tips we are sure of to help your children get the new school year started off right. If your child is walking to school, ensure they are comfortable with the route. Walk it with them before school starts or maybe for the first couple of days. Teach them to cross the streets only at guarded crosswalks and when possible travel with a friend or in a group. Teach the little ones about Stranger Danger. Don’t talk to or approach anyone they don’t know, even if they claim to be a friend, offer them something, or ask them for assistance. Immediately walk away and yell for help. As summer ends the days become shorter. Your children may find themselves walking home during dusk, when visibility is low. Ensure they are wearing something reflective so drivers can see them. If they are riding bicycles to and from school, make sure the bike is in good working order. Ensure your child wears a bicycle helmet, and secures the bike properly while in school. Any child riding their bike should know the rules of the road regarding bicycle operations. A headlight and reflectors on the bike are essential. Travels to and from school can be hectic, especially if you have

several kids to watch for. Unfortunately, amidst the chaos, sometimes little ones have been forgotten, ending in tragedy. Always check the car before you lock it to ensure you have everyone accounted for. Remember to “Look before you lock!” Children will still want to soak up the remainder of the summertime fun by playing outside after school. Ensure they are wearing something reflective and encourage them to avoid playing in the streets after sundown. The weather is still fairly warm in September so remember to keep them hydrated. Finally, the start of the new school year is special for us, in the Fire Department, as we introduce the students to our annual Fire Prevention Art & Literature contest. Every school aged child in K through 5 is encouraged to participate. Children are encouraged to submit their best artwork interpretation of the annual fire prevention theme in the form of a poster, essay, relief art, photography, video, or digital art. The winners receive trophies and some great prizes. Your child should check with their school’s art teacher for details and entry requirements. Let’s ensure our children have a great start to the school year and we give them every opportunity to succeed. Stay well, Don Todd, Fire Chief and your neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department

ou likely have seen big dusty trucks working at Pine Island Park, just east of Pine Island Road. Work is continuing and the goal is to reopen the park in November, in time for the recreational soccer season. Parks and Recreation Director Phil Goodrich provided an update on the project at a summer Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting. The park is receiving a complete makeover, with new soccer fields, including one with artificial turf. That field can be used for festivals and concerts, with the city’s mobile stage available as an elevated spot for musicians or masters of ceremonies. A sidewalk will encompass the fields, providing a walking course for those looking for an open-air stroll or parents who want to exercise while their children are at the soccer fields. The project also will combine two parking lots into one, with entry now being from the side closer to the Westfield Broward Mall. Special emphasis has been placed on improving the field drainage, which has prompted all-too-often closures. Goodrich noted that the land originally was used as a drainage area for the mall, so making fields playable after a significant rainfall has always been problematic. By the way, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meetings, which are held quarterly, are open to the public, and are especially useful for getting a “big picture” look at our parks. (Those with complaints or issues are better off contacting parks staff in a timelier manner.)

Check the calendar at Plantation.org for meeting dates and times. ACCREDITATION FOR PARKS Our parks department has earned accreditation from the National Recreation and Park Association, a lofty recognition that is rare among municipalities. Only 183 municipal parks departments nationwide have such an accreditation. Of those, 24 are in Florida and only five are in Broward County. The formal announcement was made on Oct. 26, 2020. The National Recreation and Park Association created the “Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).” CAPRA provides quality assurance and quality improvement of accredited park and recreation agencies throughout the United States by providing agencies with a management system of best practices. The agency says CAPRA is the only national accreditation of park and recreation agencies and is a valuable measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management and service to the community. “Achieving CAPRA accreditation is the best way to demonstrate that your agency and your staff provide your community with the highest level of service,” the FRPA web site reads. The process started about four years ago and a 182-page guidebook spells out the expectations. The department is asked to meet 154 standards, such as communicating with the public about recreation programs, a recycling program, ADA compliance and defined plans to replace equipment as it ages. Cities don’t have to be perfect, but they do have to be about 90 percent of the way there. Members of the accreditation committee visit the city’s parks before granting a successful application. Parks and Recreation Director Phil Goodrich says the process provided an opportunity to “fix some gaps and modify some minor things,” which help provide better services to the public.

A YEAR OF CHANGE W

t

By Dr. David Yudell, Licensed Psychologis

hoa. It has been a long year of change. Let us start by all taking in a deep breath (mask is recommended). Now exhale. I realize how real (and possibly painful) the events of 2020 were for all of us. However, I am optimistic by nature. As such I am looking forward to a school year that resembles past expectations. Support, enrichment and socialization for our children. To say the world has changed is an understatement. I encourage those I work with to focus less on global events and more on yourself and your family. My aim for this article is to offer some direction as school starts for what will unmistakably be a year of change. Respect. Simply put, there are many opinions that circulate through the residents of South Florida. If New York was known as the melting pot by previous generations, South Florida seems to meet that description today. As a psychologist I have learned to straddle the fence. I clearly have my own opinion, however I would be less than effective if I was not able to understand the opinions of my patients. A central tenet in parenting should be to be respectful of others. Not just elders and teachers but of our children’s peers and their families, most notably when their views dissent from ours. This year, during this climate, is the perfect time to teach this lesson and live by example. Emotional Impact. This area will be the most difficult to measure as well as the most important to rectify. The social isolation that occurred while we were learning how to and then protecting our families from the pandemic will be dissected for years. How do you identify damage done by increased technology use, decreased education and halted socialization on children? The answers will be studied and debated. For now keep an eye on your children and recreate normal activity. If they seem sad, withdrawn, angry, distracted or show behavior that is concerning in any way, start by

consulting with your pediatrician. They can guide you through what can be expected versus what could be a sign of the need for psychological help. Loss and Catch Up. We will be seeing the impact of COVID on education and socialization for some time. You can take solace in knowing that it was a global pandemic but that only helps with accepting the loss. The goal now should be to regroup and refocus. Use the start of this year as a way to get your child to focus on several aspects of school that will make him or her successful. From note taking, to using a schedule or dry erase board to plan for assignments and tests, to reaching out to teachers and other students for collaboration. Use this as an opportunity to teach them the skill of asking for help. Get them involved in sports and enriching activities that they missed out on. There are ways to measure their abilities through either their school or through trained psychologists. The first part of the school year is a perfect time for assessment of their abilities. Get involved in their academics and get to know your child as they navigate through this year. The best step to take at this point is to observe (how they are dealing with their academics, social and emotional functioning), intervene (provide support and help to the best of your ability) and ask for help (teachers, tutors, appropriate health care professionals) when you are concerned or unsure of the next step. Be optimistic about school, model the behaviors you want from your children, and work hard to support them throughout the year. elcome back! We are so excited to see all of our students back in our school building again. “We are going to have a MARVELous year at Plantation Park Elementary!” We know that SUPER things will be happening this year, as we strive to ensure that all our students continue to succeed. With the learning and growing that took place last year as we made magic happen at “The Most Magical School on Earth”, we now know that we are capable of so much more than we ever imagined. Technology has found a new and permanent place in our classrooms. Virtual field trips allow us to explore new places and experience things that weren’t possible before. Access to books online allows us to read until our heart’s content and offers the ability to find books that may not have been previously available. It’s going to be MARVELous to have our families and friends participate in Career Day, Volunteering, Book Fairs, Family Nights and so much more. We can’t wait to begin our after-school enrichment clubs: Student Council, Debate, Science, Art, Robotics, Yoga, K-Kidz, Chorus, among others. Our partnerships with other entities such as The JCC, Boys and Girls Club, and Mathnasium, offers our students a wide variety of enrichment programs & activities to choose from after school.

arely do children sail through school from kindergarten through twelfth grade without encountering a few challenges along the way. However, there are typical academic hurdles that teach children about perseverance and asking for help, and then there are big struggles that need intervention. How can you recognize a problem that requires more than just a bit of additional effort on your child’s part? Here are six signs that your child likely needs tutoring help: 1. Poor study skills – Is your child helpless when it comes to getting going on homework each night? Does he or she struggle to prioritize homework and waste time on meaningless tasks? Study habits are not inherent for most students and must be taught and practiced. Take a close look at things like your child’s notes and in-class worksheets and watch how he or she approaches homework each night. 2. A sharp decline in grades – Occasional bad grades on homework and tests happen even to the best of students and are nothing to get overly concerned about, but grades that get worse quickly might indicate that your child lacks basic skills and is having a hard time keeping up in the classroom. 3. Homework taking an exorbitant amount of time – Your child’s teacher(s) can tell you what is considered reasonable in terms of the amount of time spent on homework, but a good rule of thumb is 20 minutes of homework per night in first grade and 10 minutes additional per grade thereafter. If your fourth-grader is spending over an hour on homework each night but the grades don’t reflect the effort, you should investigate. 4. Lots of time-wasting – Does your child have difficulty getting started on homework just about every night? Is procrastination a frequent problem? These are indicators of a child who is either avoiding work because he or she doesn’t understand something or has a learning issue.

But it’s not just about the afterschool clubs. Our teachers and staff can’t wait to see the MARVELous things that our students are going to accomplish during the school day. From reading, math, science, and social studies, to projects and poems, to Jump Rope for Heart, to Friday fun writing, art contests, and music composition, we know that our students are going to shine. We can’t wait to see which students’ stars will be added to our Wall of Fame for the MARVELous things they will accomplish. We are also looking forward to seeing which students will step up and be the best representation for our character traits of responsibility, citizenship, kindness, respect, honesty, self-control, tolerance, and cooperation. Because all of our students do their best to abide by our TRIBES Agreements of mutual respect, appreciation, the right to pass, and attentive listening, it will be a close call in choosing only one student. We know that the 2021-22 school year at Plantation Park Elementary is going to be the most MARVELous year yet, and we are so excited that you will be joining us. Plantation Park Elementary is located at 875 SW 54th Avenue in Plantation and can be reached at (754) 323-7150.

5. Anger and apathy – Every child gets frustrated by homework sometimes but take note of excessive exasperation or anxiety. If your child used to enjoy school and now seems uninterested or upset whenever you try to help with homework, it’s time to explore what’s going on behind the scenes. 6. Avoidance – Regular declarations of feeling too sick to go to school. Dismissiveness when school comes up in conversation. Skipped homework (or frequent claims that no homework was assigned). All of these examples are signs that your child is losing interest in school. That avoidance could very well stem from school struggles. Open the lines of communication with your child to try to understand what’s actually happening. Obviously the biggest “red flag” that your child needs help in school is a poor report card, but there are plenty of indicators along the way. If you suspect that your child is having problems in school in between report cards, the first thing you should do is schedule a time to speak to the teacher to learn more about what he or she sees. You should also call Huntington. ver the summer, Plantation High School’s facility hosted a variety of summer programming that included the BCPS Summer Experience, YMCA programs, and a Gifted Summer Camp. Students in grades 3-12 were able to enjoy summer programs and reconnect with other students in an in-person environment. The participants had the opportunity to recover courses, participate in enrichment programs, and gain a head start on skills needed for core curriculum courses. As we venture into a new “post pandemic normal”, Plantation High will embrace the culture of caring with all stakeholders. We will continue to embrace the whole child while fostering the needs of all. Plantation high continues to offer a curriculum suited towards the future success of all students. There are different options for students who choose to attend college or begin a career. We continue to welcome students into our Gifted Magnet, International Baccalaureate Magnet, Cambridge Innovative Program, and Industry Certification Programs. Our faculty & staff are excited to welcome our students back into to the building, and getting them re-acquainted with in-person learning, which for some students has been the better part of over a year and a half. Plantation High has provided faculty and staff with professional development in preparation for the new school year. As we kick off the new school year, we will begin with fall sports: Football, Cross-Country, Swimming, Girls Volleyball, Cheerleading, and Golf. Our Varsity Football Players were the runner ups in the 2020 tri-county championships. They are poised to exceed that amazing accomplishment for the 2021 school year. We are proud that one of our athletes placed 9th in the tri-county Girls Cross Country championship. And, one of our swim team members placed a 2nd in the tri-county 400m fly championship. Our coaches have been working with our athletes in preparation for the fall season. The coaches are always working hard at developing the athletes’ skills, training and relationship-building. We are a family at Plantation High School. Every experience will be positive one and we look forward to a great year ahead! Plantation High School is located at 6901 NW 16th St, Plantation, FL 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-1850.

TUTOR DOCTOR SOUTH FORT LAUDERDALE Tutor Doctor provides one-to-one in-home and online tutoring for all ages and all subjects. We meet students where they are, to get them where they need to go. We believe that learning is not a one-size-fitsall proposition. Education should be customized for each student, and supplementary education in a one-to-one environment is essential for most students to excel in their academics. Tutors meet with students to give them the personal attention they need, in an environment in which they are most comfortable. Learning is easier when a student is home, learning at their pace, and on their terms. This is how we empower students to achieve their full potential. With Tutor Doctor, your child is embarking on a journey that will not only provide them with the educational building blocks they need to succeed but will help shape the very person they become. Along this path they will experience triumphs and challenges, both in school and in their personal lives. Whether that’s discovering who they are, making new friends, or experiencing their first heartbreak, each journey is unique. tudents often experience gaps in their learning when a particular concept or subject taught in school was not fully understood. Here’s why learning gaps are a problem – and how to fix them! When talking about learning gaps, it’s important to understand how they form. Learning is based on educational building blocks (in the sense that new knowledge “builds” upon previous concepts that have been taught). Teachers have to cover a lot of content each year, and sometimes the class needs to move on to the next chapter. If a student didn’t really “get it” – there’s a good chance that any future concepts that rely on understanding this knowledge are going to be even more difficult to grasp. This is how learning gaps begin to form. Learning gaps have always been common in education, but the last year has been especially difficult for students. The transition to online learning has been a lot tougher on some students than others, and unfortunately this has led to an increase in learning gaps. The issue is compounded for students who were let out from school early in 2020, with some experiencing over 6 months of “down time” before starting virtual classes in the fall. This “COVID slide” compounded existing learning gaps that have always existed. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to addressing learning gaps is that students themselves are not always aware of why they are struggling. As a result, identifying learning gaps should be the first step any tutor or academic coach takes in order to create an individualized plan for the student moving forward. In general, the best way to address learning gaps is simple – go back and revisit the areas that need extra work. Although this seems like an obvious answer, remember that learning gaps form because students are often forced to “move on” with their class’s pace, regardless of whether or not they have gained a firm understanding of the concept being taught. Tutors have the unique ability to go back and revisit previous topics and subjects that weren’t clear,

working one on one at the student’s pace. As the student gains clarity into concepts that were not understood previously, the gaps in their learning will gradually begin to close. In summary, we’d recommend taking a three-step approach when dealing with learning gaps: • Understand why learning gaps form. • Identify specific gaps in the student’s learning. • Work with a teacher, tutor, or academic coach and revisit previous material. Once learning gaps begin to close, students often see huge improvements in both their grades as well as their overall attitude towards academics. Learning is constantly about moving forward and building upon previous knowledge, so it’s incredibly important for students to have a firm academic foundation in all subjects. to men & women who are on call to serve our community every day. The caravan of love continued at the Fire Department where principals, counselors and PTA members spread love for the BCPS Day of Service. This was just a small thank you from our enormously appreciative community of Plantation schools. Principal Deutsch was also the catalyst behind another PTA & donor funded project, The Kindness Matters Project, this year. Art Teacher, Krystal Applebaum, local artist Robert Rollins, along with a generous donation from a corporate sponsor Complete Property Services, made magic happen by creating a breathtaking mural to remind everyone on campus that Kindness Matters! The mural brightens the school & teaches the important lesson of inclusivity and kindness. In addition, a sensational pair of Panda Parents have brought the school’s main entrance to life with another exciting mural! Bright colors of the rainbow adorn the pillars. Handprints spell out “Rise Up” in American Sign Language in a free-hand painted mural that is encouraging to every Panda passerby! Our school is looking as vibrant and brilliant as the children walking its halls, and the Plantation community has played an instrumental role in its success. There truly are GREAT things happening at Peters Elementary! We can hardly wait to welcome all our Pandas back in the Fall!! Peters Elementary is located at 851 NW 68th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and may be reached at (754) 322-7900.

eters Elementary would like to thank the members of our caring & generous community! As families worked hard to recover from the pandemic this year, the administration at Peters Elementary wanted to lift the burden of the cost of off our community. We decided a supply drive was in order. A post was made on social media expressing a need for earbuds, an expensive item that has been difficult to collect in the past. Within 24 hours, we had enough donations to outfit every child at school with a pair of earbuds. PTA President Jessica Valenzuela said, “This community has poured such love into Peters [Elementary] this spring, it’s touched every parent and staff member’s heart”. “Our vision of what we want to provide to our students and staff often largely outweighs what our budget allows. We had high hopes and asked our community and sponsors, and they did not disappoint us! We were able to provide basic school supplies during the 2020-2021 school year and will be able to do so again for 2021-2022, thanks to their generosity. We even had two beautiful murals painted. We are so fortunate to have such a loving community” said Peters Elementary Principal, Susanna Deutsch. Because of our community’s love & generosity, the Administration, & PTA were able to work beside other Plantation schools to bring this project to life on February 11th, 2021. People from all over our beautiful city and beyond donated new mugs for our Kindness Cups initiative. We delivered mugs of hot chocolate & candy to Plantation’s first responders. The morning began at the Police Department where 200 mugs were delivered
