T his year’s Fort Lauderdale Fashion

Weekend was held at the beautiful Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation. The JC PENNY Kids Show was held on Saturday, August 3rd and the MACY’S Kids Show was held on Sunday, August 4th. The runway production showcased designers, brands, performers, bloggers and influencers. The FLL Kids Fashion weekend show, hosted by the founder of Women Supporting Women Florida, Carroll-Lynn Willgren, spread the love of fashion for children and teens while creating endless opportunities and experiences in an encouraging environment for all. The FLL Kids Fashion Show prides itself in bringing REAL industry professionals to spread knowledge and education to the models and the models’ families. There are so many “not true” events and information that can take advantage of models, especially ones that are newer to the industry. They are raising the bar and creating a new industry standard of fashion shows and events while providing top quality life experiences for models. The fashionable schedule of runway shows, performances and activities was held in the center court of Westfield Mall on Saturday and successfully targeted the entertainment for children from 6 to 15 years old and their parents. On stage Saturday featured a solo performance by Ian Sanders, then the hip Back-to-School collection from JC PENNY.

Sunday’s runway took place at the MACY’s court where Moderna Doba took the stage showcasing her latest luxurious chic children’s collection by Brittany Mitzan. Afterward, South Florida Fashion Academy took the runway and then the fashion weekend concluded with a fabulous show by Macy’s including a mommy and me showcase. South Florida Fashion Academy, South Florida’s First of its kind Fashion Academy for Teen Girls, had their students assist with hair for backstage on both days of production. South Florida Fashion Academy is a program designed to educate, inspire and illuminate an intense desire to optimize the creative minds of teens interested in the Fashion and Beauty Industries. The Annual FLL Kids Fashion Weekend’s event teaches kids the importance of selfexpression, diversity, friendship, acceptance, education and giving back to their communities. They provide an environment where self-esteem and talent can be developed. Catering to kids, families and the fashion industry, they provide quality entertainment and fashion collections with over 30 kids from as young as 6 years old in a way that supports culture and encourages children of all backgrounds to take the stage and walk. To learn more about the FLL Fashion Week, contact Carroll-Lynn Willgren at (786) 2774478, email her at info@FLLfashionweek.com or follow on Facebook.com/FLL Fashion Week.

AROUND TOWN school, please select Plantation Middle School, or feeder schools Peters Elementary and Mirror Lake Elementary, as your preferred assignment. And, if you don’t like that, pick another one. You might work just once the whole year, and that’s fine, but believe me, they will accept the help. What kind of help? Don’t be afraid of that part, either. List your skills and understand that even being a “warm body” can bring progress. And you’ll develop a vested interest in “your” school. Does this mean I’m telling you where to send your child? Absolutely not. Parents are going to do what’s best for their individual child, and should assess their options case-by-case. Now, would I love for our city’s public schools to be in the mix of those you visit? Yes, of course. Such an endeavor helps build communities, neighborhoods and, well, property values. I am making this request now, with the understanding that your application takes time to review. You’ll need your driver’s license (because they’ll run a background check), about 10 minutes to navigate through the form, and a little bit of patience, because the questions are detailed. Through all my conversations, I’ve learned that there is no magic solution – and the only momentum we can muster for those schools is whatever we generate ourselves. It’s on us. Go to BrowardSchools.com/volunteer and register for the 2019-2020 school year. Nick Sortal is president pro tem of the Plantation City Council. Email him at NickSortal@BellSouth.net.

I

am delighted to announce a new initiative to improve three Plantation schools, and the engine that will make it work is … you! I’m asking everyone – regardless of what skills they possess – to go to BrowardSchools.com/Volunteer and enroll as a public-school volunteer. The onus will then be on the school to best determine how to deploy us. Since I was elected November 6, 2018, I have been working to find a way to improve Plantation schools. As I knocked on doors during my campaign, I heard far too many people say they were looking to move as their children grew up. (Real estate professionals can confirm this.) After meeting with all the principals involved, as well as school board member Rosalind Osgood, I got the green light. I then spelled out my plan to the Plantation Education Advisory Board. To me, Ground Zero is Plantation Middle School, and the numbers bear me out. Data shows that the school has the county’s lowest percentage of in-zone children who actually attend that school (about 55 percent). So as a leader in our city, I want to address a challenge that our residents are facing – even though municipal governments are not responsible for schools per se. I cannot control what our School Board does. I can’t (nor do I want to) tell principals how to run their school. All I can do is to encourage anyone who cares to get involved and help work our way toward the top. And this is how we’ll start. My request is if you don’t have a child attending a particular

ocated in an unsuspecting strip center in the heart of our city is an institute of higher learning for elementary, middle and high school aged students. While it has been a cornerstone of math and computer science for Plantation children for 27 years, it remains one of our best kept secrets. IMACS, The Institute for Math and Computer Science, has been changing the face of after school enrichment for years. The impact of these programs on children with an interest in math and computer science is palpable. Their programs build confidence and character, and enhances the logical thought process, continually challenging the minds of our children. Terry Kaufman, founding partner and president of IMACS, was named 2018 Small Businessperson of the Year by the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce. IMACS facilitates online math programs for talented students dualenrolled in Broward County Public Schools. IMACS awards dozens of summer camp scholarships to underserved students and works with local school PTO, PTA and PTSAs in an effort to foster students with an interest in STEM and a knack for problem solving to continue to expand their minds. IMACS has the best interest of their students at heart. They are community driven and listen to the needs of the parents of those students. The most recent example of that is a collaboration between IMACS, Detective Lee Bieber (2018’s officer of the year), Public Information Officer Nancy Paul, and Mayor Lynn Stoner. The result is a seminar for parents entitled “Device Safety 101 @ IMACS”. The apps your child has downloaded can be easily infiltrated potentially exposing them to predators. We cannot be afraid or ashamed to admit that we may not have the knowledge to monitor our children’s online activity. We must be aware that innocently posting an image of our young child to Facebook, Instagram or other social media could make them a target of an unwelcome acquaintance, a stranger, or worse - a predator. Those who attended the first seminar were grateful for the information. Our children are device savvy and their phones, tablets and gaming systems are as second nature to them as walking and talking are to us. Terry Kaufman opened his facility for two back to back seminars filled with parents, educators and business people from our community, all with one distinct common interest: to educate ourselves and to enable us to better

protect our youth in a quickly and ever-changing society. Bravo Terry for being proactive in a time when its often scary for kids just living their lives, innocently sharing images, befriending people online and downloading apps that are giving 3rd parties access to our kids! Lee Biebers’ presentation highlighted platforms, devices, and red flags, complete with actual local cases where these common tactics were used to engage and groom children. One of the most eye opening topics was how easily preteens and teens will share explicit images despite the conversations we all have with our children. Lee outlined how to talk to our children about sharing photographs, knowing your contacts and followers, and constantly reviewing their account settings. Our children need to know that they can always talk to us. They may not tell us everything, however, involvement with our children and awareness of their behavior combined with active dialog about their online time and friendships, exponentially increases our ability to protect them. It is a reality! Online predators exist and they are continually trying to develop a rapport with our children! THE NEXT DEVICE SAFETY 101 SEMINAR WILL BE HELD AT THE PLANTATION IMACS LOCATION ON SEPTEMBER 12th at 7:00PM. CALL (954) 791-2333 TO RESERVE YOUR SEAT. “If you can’t make it to the seminar, be sure to check out IMACS’ other amazing classes.” This school has much to offer and the courses taught at IMACS are unlike any other classes that your child has taken. The only way to understand this is to for your children to attend a FREE placement class. During this hour, you will observe the entire “evaluation” process and witness each interaction your child has with the other students and the teacher/facilitator. As a parent you will define the success of your child’s education through the logic and thought processes they are exposed to and develop as they mature. Through meticulously designed challenges, IMACS students develop a well-founded confidence, rooted in genuine advancement of their reasoning skills. IMACs Math Enrichment gives kids a unique opportunity to learn to think as many of the brightest minds, with the precision of a scientist or doctor and the creativity of a novelist or a composer, and apply that skill wherever their interests lie. IMACS creates better thinkers for life.

PLANTATION HIGH’S GIFTED SUMMER CAMP T

WAS A BLAST!

he inaugural session of the Plantation High School Gifted Summer Camp ran from June 17-27 and was a huge success. Our camp provided a learning environment that valued and enhanced the gifted student’s ability, creativity, and passion for learning. Once we announced that Plantation High School was offering a camp to gifted and high achieving students in Broward County, our 125+ open seats were filled within three weeks. The camp was open to students in grades three through eight, and all grades were well represented. We also welcomed students from private and charter schools. A wide variety of daily activities and enrichment were offered to the campers. Their daily schedules were jam packed and campers went home exhausted each day. Every student who attended camp was exposed to: S.T.E.M. Rocketry class, Math/Logic Games, Creative Writing, Coding and Sports. In addition, each camper chose immersion in one of the following elective courses: Chess, Fine Arts, Robotics, Musical Engineering, Creative Dramatics, Archaeology, Leadership, Debate, and Personal Finance. One highlight during camp was when the Broward Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad brought their bomb detection robot to demonstrate how robotics is used by law-enforcement. Campers were very engaged in the presentation and asked very detailed questions. Although this was very our first year, Plantation High School administered an outstanding summer camp that was a safe and diverse program where girls and boys made new friends, discovered new passions and learned to be independent. Here, they were taught values such as teamwork and cooperation, all while learning new skills that they will take with them as they continue on their academic journeys. Many thanks to our teachers and volunteer counselors who made the camp a place where students will want to return to each summer.

For more information about the Plantation High School Gifted Summer Camp, please visit the Plantation High School website >Activities>Gifted Summer Camp. We will be updating the web page information in January 2020 and accepting applications around March 2020. Please contact Donna DeMarco at (754) 322-1850 for any information about gifted camp or the Gifted Academy at Plantation High School located at 6901 NW 16 Street, Plantation 33313.

SCHOOLS aladins are ready for another journey in purple and gold. The 2019 graduates saluted their valedictorian and salutatorian at the graduation ceremony on May 31 at Nova Southeastern University. We want to let the City of Plantation know our 2019 valedictorian was Mohammad Alghawi who finished with a 5.32 GPA and is attending Johns Hopkins University as a Pre-Med student. Jacquelin Seager was the 2019 salutatorian. She finished with a 5.21 GPA and is attending Georgia Institute of Technology as a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering major. Our incoming freshmen attended the annual Freshmen Round Up on August 6th. These students are the Class of 2023! We welcome all our new Paladins. We can’t wait to see them as athletes, members of the band or chorus, club members and scholars. There is so much to participate in at South Plantation. The football games and pep rallies will start up right away for new students to jump right in and take part in all the fun. The seniors are already applying to colleges! The applications opened

ou’ve heard before that there’s no such thing as “onesize-fits-all” learning. The same is true for study and homework strategies. The responsibility factor is a big part of homework and one of its primary benefits. Homework nurtures students’ time management skills and their ability to complete tasks. But the primary purpose of homework is to reinforce what teachers teach in the classroom. The U.S. Department of Education describes four common types of homework: practice, preparatory, extension and integration. At Huntington, we help children of all ages become better students. Here are some of the strategies we teach for tackling different homework types: Practice – Practice homework is the most common type you’ll see come home. It is intended to bolster classroom learning and help students master specific skills. So, just as the name implies, the key to success with this type of homework is to keep practicing. A few tips for children: • Nail down the basic skills that are the underpinning for more complex skills. • Learn from mistakes by going over missed class problems or test questions. • Always consider homework to be required, not optional. • Dig into the steps. In math, for example, children must understand the “why” behind steps and not just the rote “how.” Preparatory – Like it sounds, preparatory homework introduces concepts and ideas that will be covered in class in the near future. Common preparatory homework examples include learning vocabulary or reading a textbook chapter before the content is to be discussed the next day. A few tips for children doing preparatory homework: • Take notes of the main ideas of passages and bring them out when the topic is covered in class. • Write down questions that arise while completing homework. Ask those questions in class the next day. • If stumped on a problem (math or science, for example), circle it and write down a few reasons why the problem is confusing. Extension – Extension homework is often assigned when teachers want to challenge a student with opportunities to apply what they have learned to something new. A few tips for children doing extension homework: • Be resourceful, looking through notes or the textbook for strategies on how to solve a problem or additional information that might be helpful for homework completion. • Think about concepts in different ways and from different angles. This helps children engage in different ways of mental processing. • Take a problem-solving approach to new and unfamiliar material. Children should think about what tools and information they already have that might help them tackle a problem.

Integration – Integration homework requires students to apply different skills to a single task (e.g. book reports or larger projects). A few tips for children doing integration homework: • Be organized and keep track of all research and information. • Plan thoroughly and effectively, with milestones for multi-step projects. Here are a few best practices to make homework time more productive and successful, no matter what type of homework: • Establish the spot. Consistency is important and helps children get into good homework routines. Designate a place in your home for homework, whether that’s the kitchen, dining room or your child’s desk in her room. • Designate a time. Some children focus best right after school, while others are most alert after dinner and activities. Figure out the best time of day for homework and do your best to set and keep a schedule. • Commit to organization. A homework center with the supplies your child needs to be productive helps children get to work when it’s time to do homework. Your child should spend a few minutes at the end of each homework session tidying it up for the next day. • Spend time creating a game plan. Your child should go through his planner before starting homework to look over all assignments for the evening and rank them in order of priority. This will keep homework time on track and eliminate procrastination. • Limit homework help. Resist the urge to take a lead role in your child’s homework or step in to show your child how to do homework. Your child should take the initiative and assume responsibility. Make sure your role is as a supporter. Is your child stressed and struggling with homework on a daily basis? Huntington can help. A Gym for the Brain: Complex Mental Work “think, value, judge, decide, and analyze”

hess is a game that has been played for ages. However, chess is not a passive and effortless activity. Chess requires complex mental work that requires players to think, value, judge, decide, and analyze the entire duration of a game. Chess is considered an intellectual game that requires analytical thinking. Playing chess provides constant challenging brain stimulation. For this reason, chess is beneficial to children and their development. Chess is used as a tool to improve concentration, focus, imagination, and self-confidence in children. It is an intellectual activity in which children have fun while gaining a variety of valuable skills. Chess players must strategize to successfully “check mate” an opponent. They must also use their memory skills to successfully plan and execute a victory. These are skills that are also useful in the classroom to improve learning. Children learn to solve abstract problems on a chess board as well, that can in turn, be used in the classroom setting. Chess promotes self-confidence and respect. Students learn that practice improves one’s game much like extra practice in the classroom also improves the ability to

problem solve and recall concepts on tests and assessments. Through practice in playing chess, students learn to persevere and triumph despite difficult situations, an important life lesson. Chess also reinforces following rules to correctly play the game. Students must learn and adhere to the many rules of chess to be able to play. Respect is emphasized, a golden rule of play is that all players must shake hands before and after a match despite victory or defeat. As a result, children learn to accept the many outcomes of every game win, lose, or draw as a normality of playing the game consistently, a great lesson in sportsmanship. In the end, the most important lesson is to develop a love for thinking and the game of chess! Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been benefiting and enriching children for more than 13 years in Florida. Chess for Kids is present in private and public schools and also has convenient locations in community centers throughout Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. For more information about aftercare and chess in the classroom programs, please contact us at (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.

he art of handwritten letters may seem archaic to this next current generation, however, two elementary schools in Plantation have revived this meaningful past-time thanks to the brainstorm and efforts of Barbara Clair Kettler and her toy poodle pet therapy service dog, Chessie, members of the Share-A-Pet organization and the Pawsitive Reading Program. In collaboration with the principals and teachers, six second grade classes, three from Tropical Elementary and three from Peters Elementary, partnered together to be pen pals. Students wrote letters back and forth to each other regularly throughout the school year. The letters were read to and then and then delivered by Ms. Barbara and Chessie. The kids all loved it and so did each of the respective teachers. “We all love Chessie and Ms. Barbara and looked forward to their visits each week. We knew that when Chessie came to our class, we would get a letter from our pen pal and we were so excited to read the letter and share it with our classmates and then write back to our penpals,” said Peters Elementary teacher, Ms. Friedman. Writing letters not only improved the students’ handwriting, but also improved spelling, sentence structure, illustration, grammar and reading. Added bonuses that came with the pen pal program were improved communication skills with someone unknown, as well as imaginative and cognitive skills to try to identify and relate to their pen pal. It was hands-on learning that was worked into their 2nd grade literacy block doing an activity they loved! As the end of the year neared, the six classes knew their letters would stop and the chance of ever meeting their pen pals was dwindling. Through a collaborative effort between schools, on April 26th, the bus with the Peters Elementary students arrived at Tropical Elementary and they were greeted by Ms. Barbara and Chessie, Tropical principal Erik Anderson. The students were led to the classrooms where their pen pals

were eagerly awaiting their arrival! On each of the desks were folded, elaborately decorated, tented cards welcoming each of their pen pals from Peters Elementary. At last they met, talked and laughed together, exchanging their last letter of the year! The Peters’ students were taken on a tour of the Tropical campus then went to the field and played kickball and Legos before returning to the classrooms. In the classrooms, they created their own personalized photo frames which would hold photos of them with their penpal. Students were encouraged to keep a summer penpal diary that will be delivered to their pen pals at the start of the next school year. Kudos to the efforts of Barbara Clair Kettler and the ShareA-Pet therapy organization who spear headed this educational and fun program! Ms. Barbara is a retired elementary school teacher who began training Chessie to become a pet therapy dog in 2008. With her education background and pet therapy work, she and Chessie made a natural transition to become part of the Pawsitive Reading Program at Tropical Elementary in 2010. Initially, this involved working with a few students at a time to improve their reading skills and included letter writing to Chessie, who always wrote back. It has now has evolved into working with entire classes from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. As a testament to the “positive” results, the Pawsitive Reading has grown to include many other owner/pet reading teams at Tropical, as well as Peters Elementary schools. “This was beyond my wildest dreams! Could not have planned it better and everyone did such a wonderful job of coordinating this. We already have teachers from both schools stepping up to be part of the pen pal program next school year. We just can’t wait to get started!” said Ms. Barbara. For more information: • Pawsitive Reading: Barbara Clair Kettler, ChessieK9@aol.com.
