ance FX summer camp offers a multitude of ageappropriate activities to give children a summer to remember. Located in the heart of Sunrise, Dance FX combines dance, arts & crafts, movies, in-plaza field trips, and other onsite events. Camp is in session from June 13 through August 14. Drop-off times are between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Stretch begins at 9:15 a.m. every day. The front door will be locked at that time. The recommended pick-up time is between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. as we are setting up for our afternoon dance classes. Any pick-ups after 5 p.m. will cost an additional $5 per day. For almost three decades, Dance FX has been one of the most prominent dance studios in South Florida. Students train in ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary acro and tap with classes for ages 2-18. Dance FX boasts both a recreational program as well as a nationally recognized competition team. Students have gone on to dance professionally on television shows like So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Got Talent and perform in Broadway shows like STOMP. We also have alumni who have worked as performers at Busch Gardens, Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure, Sea World and danced in such blockbuster acts as Jennifer Lopez, Charlie Puth, Justin Bieber, Flo Rida and Pitbull. Campers receive a taste of the training throughout the summer that has produced some of South Florida’s elite dancers. Each day begins with a warm-up session, followed by a specific dance class. Genres include jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary and so much more. At the end of the week, students have the opportunity to showcase some of the combos they have learned in front of their fellow dancers, like a scaleddown talent show.

Ideal for ages 5 to 12, Dance FX summer camp is chock-full of entertainment. For starters, what camper doesn’t love a dress-up day? Past and upcoming spirit and dress-up themes include: Crazy Hair Day, Crazy Sock Day, Pajama Day, ‘80s Day, Superhero Day, Sports Theme Day, Western Day, Favorite Celeb Day, Wacky Tourist Day and so many more. Campers will have no shortage of opportunities to show off their creative sides. And, oh, the places they’ll go. In-plaza field trips include visits from the Sunrise Police and Sunrise Fire Department, Science Made Fun days and trips to our neighbors at Dunkin Donuts, Tin Fish and much more. Field trips average about $5 to $10. Schedules are given each week of the following week’s dress-up days and activities. Owner Joan Bartoletti promises campers that this summer will have a new lineup of activities and adventures. For parents’ peace of mind, Bartoletti points out that the Dance FX summer camp is a great way for kids to stay active while avoiding the unbearable heat and those unpredictable summer storms. An added bonus – all the fun and festivities are held in one safe vicinity so you don’t have to spend the summer worrying about your camper. “Year after year, we have campers who return to attend Dance FX’s summer camp,” Bartoletti explains. “They love having the opportunity to live out their dance dreams, while also enjoying arts & crafts, fun field trips, cool experiments, and more”. Parents enjoy having the benefit to pay by day or week, allowing them flexibility to plan their summer without having to commit to an entire two months of summer camp. If you have any additional questions, please stop by the front desk or call (954) 742-3114. Spots are limited — reserve yours today! Dance FX, 10057D Sunset Strip, Sunrise 33322, www.DanceFXSunrise.com.

AROUND TOWN

The city of Plantation has increased its support of local schools by working to highlight

student achievements, creating new city-school partnerships, and reinvigorating the city’s Education Advisory Board. The Plantation Educational Advisory Board (EAB), consisting of residents appointed by council members and Mayor Lynn Stoner, began working to improve communication between the city and schools at its meetings in March and April. Plantation city council members last fall debated disbanding the EAB. But the board has received strong support from newly elected Mayor Stoner and the three council members elected in November last year: Nick Sortal, who included improvements to Plantation schools as a key part of his platform; Erik Anderson, the principal at Tropical Elementary; and Denise Horland, the 2010 countywide volunteer of the year for Broward Public Schools. “We visited with many of the schools and simply asked, ‘What can we do to help?’” Sortal said. “The first step is letting them know we care and we want them to succeed.” Even though they are not required to attend, all three of the new councilmembers appeared at the first two EAB meetings as spectators. When comments from the public were appropriate, the councilmembers offered up their own ideas for EAB members to consider. That included suggestions for better communication between the schools, the city, and the public. Andrew Dolberg, chair of the Education Advisory Board, believes the city can create new partnerships to improve student opportunities. “We need to help Plantation residents see the incredible programs available at every grade level within our local schools,” he said. “The phrase ‘It takes a village’ applies perfectly here. Plantation has the opportunity to bring together local businesses and organizations to support our students, to communicate more effectively about the great work of our teachers, and to

Nick Sortal

Andrew Dolberg

bring more attention to the unique offerings at our public schools.” Other EAB members are Michael Taussig, Dondi Hopkins, Maria Barth, Robin Fractenberg and Joy Clark Newkirk. Many principals of both public and private schools in Plantation have attended EAB meetings to inform the city of programs and activities that make their schools unique. Public comment is also encouraged. The EAB meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of the month at City Hall, although some summer meetings may be canceled. Check the calendar at Plantation.org. Meanwhile, activities from local schools, both public and private, are being shared on the city’s Facebook page. Plantation Public Information Officer Nancy Paul has connected with school leaders, who provide information for her to distribute. Sortal said such efforts by the city are a vital first step in supporting Plantation schools. “Many residents have pointed to schools as a part of our city they would like to see more support,” Sortal said “While the Broward School Board ultimately is in charge of education in our county, we should tap into whatever avenues our city can to help encourage our schools and our students.” Council members have also been more active in attending PTA meetings at schools, GRADE anti-drug and anti-gang graduations for fifth graders, and combined meetings of leaders from the elementary and middle schools that feed into Plantation and South Plantation high schools.

ometime before January 31st, annual tax statements, like W-2s, 1099s, and K-1s will fill your mailboxes (both real or digital). And shortly thereafter, you will find out whether the new tax laws which became effective January 1, 2018, will results in a bigger or smaller tax bill. You may remember that last year’s rewrite of income tax rules was considered the most significant change since the 1980s. If you receive a regular paycheck, you might have noticed an adjustment to your withholdings. And if that adjustment resulted in more take-home pay, you probably assumed your tax bill will be lower. For most taxpayers, that’s a correct assumption. But not for everyone. A recent analysis published by the Tax Policy Center projects about 5 percent of households will pay more taxes this year. The reasons why these might end up paying more? Well, like anything related to income taxes, it’s complicated. First, marginal tax rates are lower, and the thresholds for bumping up are higher. Lower rates and higher thresholds should mean less tax due. Here’s a comparison, between 2018 and 2017, using the numbers for a married filing jointly household:However…The calculation of deductions and credits that reduce taxable income has changed dramatically. The standard deduction from taxable income has nearly doubled to $24,000 for joint filers $18,000 for heads of household, and $12,000 for single filers. As a result, experts conclude that only 10 percent of all households will itemize deductions on their 2018 tax returns (in 2017, the number was 30 percent). But the higher standard deduction has been offset by limiting or eliminating other deductions. For example: • Deductions for state and local taxes, including property taxes, are capped at $10,000. • Personal and dependent exemptions have been eliminated, although the child credit has increased. • Interest deductions for home equity loans and real estate taxes for properties outside the U.S. have been eliminated. For households whose finances are relatively simple (one or two salaries, a mortgage, and 2.1 children), the larger standard deduction will probably exceed last year’s exemptions and itemized deductions. Thus, a slightly lower tax bill. But for those whose financial picture is a bit more complex, the results won’t probably be known until their returns are completed.

Who Could End Up Paying More? A September 2018 USNews report offered examples of households who might end up paying more taxes under the new rules. Among them: • Households with significant itemized deductions in 2017 may not realize a similar tax reduction under the new rules. For those who previously qualified for substantial reductions due to property taxes, mortgage interest and other write-offs, the elimination of, or limitations on itemized deductions may result in a higher tax liability – even with a higher standard deduction. • For similar reasons, large families could pay more. The loss of personal exemptions for dependents may not be offset by the new standard deduction plus child tax credits. Further, for children over 17, the child tax credit is reduced. It seems counter-intuitive that more dependents would mean higher taxes. But in higher income brackets, more dependents have a smaller tax-reducing effect, compared to previous years. • Homeowners with high property taxes. Itemized deductions for personal, state and local property taxes and income taxes are limited to $10,000 for households filing a joint return. For high-income households in affluent neighborhoods, state and local tax deductions often exceeded $20,000 last year. Combined with the elimination of deductions for mortgage interest paid on properties outside the U.S, and some limitations on deductible interest from large mortgages, this is a group that could see its tax bills rise substantially.

Use Your 2018 Return as a Benchmark

If a few of these scenarios sound like yours, don’t panic. “Because of the complexity of the changes, one cannot be sure just how their situation will be affected without running the numbers,” says Steven Weil, an enrolled agent and tax planner from Florida. But once you complete your 2018 return, you should know precisely how these changes have impacted your income taxes, and have an idea of things that you might want to adjust going forward.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S

STRATEGIES TO BUILD YOUR CHILD’S WORKING MEMORY sure your child gets sufficient sleep. Children might roll their eyes at Throughout the course of any given day, children are asked to do a lot of different theMake “get more sleep” suggestion, but the research doesn’t lie: sleep accelerates the things, from getting ready to engaging in the classroom, from doing chores to doing homework. In school, your child’s job is to learn, but learning is actually quite complex. It requires paying attention, comprehension, active listening, reasoning, critical thinking, making comparisons and organizing thoughts—for multiple subjects. When all of those activities come easy for children, school usually comes easy too. But, if you notice that your child struggles in school and has difficulty remembering important information and focusing on homework, you might wonder what’s going on. There could be several contributors, but it is possible that your child has a weak working memory. Working memory is defined as “memory that involves storing, focusing attention on, and manipulating information for a short period of time” (Merriam-Webster). Years ago, researchers first defined working memory as memory used to plan and carry out behavior (Miller GA, Galanter E, Pribram KH. Plans and the structure of behavior. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc; 1960.) Put simply, working memory is what helps children remember homework directions long enough to complete the work. It allows them to problem solve when they encounter tricky math homework or a word they do not understand when reading. It helps children recognize when a draft of a writing assignment needs correcting. Children who lack working memory, on the other hand, likely have a range of issues in school, including: • Poor memorization skills • Difficulty paying attention in class • Difficulty staying organized • Struggles with completing math calculations in their heads • Lots of mistakes in writing (difficulty retaining and remembering grammar rules) • Difficulty working independently/easily distracted • Often unable to answer questions correctly or thoughtfully when called on in class • Often unable to follow multi-step directions Here’s the good news: you can help your child improve his or her working memory with brain-boosting exercises and other memory improvement strategies. Here are some easy ways to do so:

improvement in working memory performance. A good night of sleep will help your child improve the memory and increase focus—among many other important benefits. Play memory games. Certain games help children improve working memory because they require them to keep track of moves of their opponents and recall information quickly. Think card games, which require players to remember their cards and keep information in their heads long enough to decide their next move, and games like Simon, which has players memorize and repeat a color pattern that gets increasingly complex. Break down bigger tasks. Have your child break down complex, detailed assignments into smaller steps. He or she should write them down and keep that to-do list visible. To strengthen working memory, encourage your child to use tools like graphic organizers, visual maps and checklists when doing homework. Working memory is one of the most essential functions students need—and integral for the cognitive abilities that fuel school success. It is what allows children to manipulate, process and retain information. If you suspect your child has poor working memory, call Huntington. We’ll evaluate your child to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses and develop a targeted plan of action that focuses on memory improvement, building confidence and improving academic performance. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. Its certified tutors provide individualized instruction in reading, phonics, writing, study skills, elementary and middle school math, Algebra through Calculus, Chemistry, and other sciences. 5th Annual Diversity Day

riday, April 12th, Mirror Lake Elementary marked their 5th anniversary of celebrating differences on Diversity Day. The partnership with FIU at I-75 continues, and the date coincides with their campus diversity activities. FIU faculty and students visit our school as classroom readers every year. Mirror Lake staff celebrates as well, with a special luncheon sharing various dishes from their countries of origin. It is a day we all look forward to knowing that we’ll be sharing our customs and cultures with one another. Our staff includes many different religions, cultures, and viewpoints, and we savor the food flavors, along with the warm conversation. The signature piece of our day is always the awesome assembly with student participation from every grade. There are songs, poems, and cheers from places all over the globe. This year, The Plantation High School band started off the festivities. Our own 5th grader, Jonte Petty was the drum major, with his father, Jonte Petty Sr. as the instructor/band leader. What a delight to include

students from our high school community to act as mentors to our elementary students. Mirror Lake Elementary is a school that always embraces diversity. We are so proud of all of our children, those with other abilities, different languages, colorful cultures, and varied personalities. Welcoming Schools is an initiative that we started five years ago, and we continue to renew to ensure that our entire community respects family diversity, avoids gender stereotyping, and ends name-calling and bullying. Nathalia Santana-Shalwani, 5th grader, presented her winning original oratory speech to summarize DIVERSITY for all of our students. Nathalia represented MLE at the district debate tournament. Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation 33313. Visit their website at mirrorlake. browardschools.com or call (754) 322-7100 for more information.

ost likely you already know or have heard that STEM is an acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.” The idea behind STEM is to encourage the United States to be more competitive in technology development by creating generations of students who can excel in high-tech jobs (some like to call this generation, “STEMists.”) STEM education is an interdisciplinary and applied approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons. Students use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise. STEM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for all students as young as they start asking why. Therefore, the experiences children have during the early years are essential. As your child’s first teacher, your role is vital in creating opportunities that promote learning in a fun and safe environment. You can help introduce essential STEM skills by teaching your children to: ask questions, work together, think creatively, solve problems, explore and take calculated risks, test solutions

ach year the principal at Plantation Park Elementary challenges the students during their annual “Principal’s Reading Challenge.” “Administrators do all kinds of crazy things to get students to read,” Ms. Gittelman, school principal, adds. In the past she dressed up as their school mascot in an owl costume, was wrapped like a mummy in cheesecloth, turned into a live ice-cream sundae, kissed an alligator, rocked out with a rock band, collected books for children in Plantation General Hospital, and got squirt with silly string. If you are interested in our STEM Program, please contact Vinson Jones, Magnet Coordinator at 754-322-8000. Our school will be hosting the YMCA Healthy Kids Day on April 27, 2019, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Parents, this is an opportunity for all Plantation families to come out and enjoy a fun and healthy family day together. The YMCA will also be registering students on-the-spot. We really hope to see you there! I hope all of our families had a wonderful spring break.

The majority of the student body participated and met their annual reading goals. The top reader was 1st grader, Audrey Siska. She joined the other top readers in each grade for a special lunch with the administration and the Literacy Coach. “As educators, we all hope that students find the books that will pull them into reading and keep them interested in literacy. The more they read, the greater the chance they will fall in love with reading. The challenge itself encourages children to turn off the television and video games and READ,” says Ms. Gittelman.

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum

52

With the CSUSA Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum at its core, the Charter Schools USA Educational Model provides the process for improving student learning and academic achievement. Our Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum includes the Florida Standards grouped and mapped in a particular way to ensure they can be mastered within the time given. It is the framework of what is taught at each grade level and ensures high expectations with a focus on college and career readiness from primary grades through high school. Teachers have the ability to use various resources to deliver the curriculum in a way that best meets the needs of their students.

Community Centered Academic Programming

Each Charter Schools USA school is an integrated part of the surrounding community and reliant upon strategic partnerships with community organizations, businesses and individuals to drive student success. Each school should serve as the anchor of the surrounding community by facilitating resources and initiatives that meet the unique needs of students, families, and the community, and capitalize on the assets and resources of the local community to enhance the student learning environment. The School integrates community partners in learning to enhance the services offered at the School. This connection drives academic achievement, youth development, post-secondary/workforce preparation and community collaboration while allowing the school to become a center of community support, civic participation, and community engagement.

Community of Character

Our aim is to promote a community of character within the School to support the social and emotional growth of students, which will in turn promote the academic growth of students. Principles from research-based programs drive the development of a safe community in which students learn skills that support citizenship, both in and out of the classroom. Cooperation, empathy, responsibility, and self-management are just a few of the traits students will cultivate in the school environment that values the whole child. Students will be motivated to succeed through building lasting relationships and trust with those around them.

Individualized Approach To Learning

Personal Learning Plan (PLP) for each student that will assess his/her skill level when he/she enrolls in the school. A path for growth is designed for each student which is periodically reassessed to determine skill development. The PLP will ensure that the individual needs of each student are met and will provide parents the opportunity to participate in educational goal setting and monitoring of their child’s academic progress.

Parental Involvement

Meaningful parent involvement in a child’s education is crucial for his or her success, therefore every effort will be made to keep parents engaged and informed. Parent volunteering opportunities are available at the School and individualized to meet the needs, demands, and capabilities of the individual student/family. This volunteer plan has the intention of providing increased parent visibility in the School, which will show students that they are supported in their academic endeavors. Daily communication with the teacher is encouraged through use of the agenda book, in which students track their homework assignments for each day and messages are sent home. Parents will have real-time access to their child’s gradebook to monitor progress in every subject. Progress reports and report cards are distributed every quarter, and parents are encouraged to schedule conferences to discuss student performance and progress toward mastery of grade level standards. The School will offer Curriculum Nights for parents to attend and learn about various educational topics, such as state assessment information or home-reading strategies.

World Language in Grades K-8

Offered as a “specials” class once a week in grades K-5 and as an elective in 6-8, the focus of the world language program is learning about the language in the areas of communication, culture and community. Students develop conversational and written skills, as well as formal language skills, required for living in a diverse environment. Through studying literature, song, dance, food and other aspects of culture, students will build an understanding of the relationship between the different perspectives and products of various cultures. Application of this knowledge will afford students the ability to recognize cultural practices and the uniqueness of various communities.

Virtual Courses

We wanted to provide you with information regarding the availability and process for students to take virtual courses at our school. As a school of choice, we understand how important it is for us to provide a variety of curriculum and instructional options for our students. As such, we have integrated our own virtual courses into our curriculum that will be monitored and supported at our school center, by our own teachers. These “on-site” virtual courses are all state approved and will provide our students with multiple course options and direct support and monitoring by our teachers. All virtual courses are fully and completely part of our school’s educational program. A complete list of virtual courses that we offer is available in the main office. These virtual courses will become part of our curriculum and instructional offerings for our students and families who have selected us as a school of choice. Since each course, traditional and virtual alike, are uniquely incorporated into our proven curriculum, virtual options are limited to our extensive list of courses. If you have any questions regarding virtual course offerings, you may contact us by calling the school. For more information call (954) 556-9700 6701 or www.PlantationCharter.org.
