Happy Holidays to all of you! Whether it be Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or “Festivus” (thank you Kramer from Seinfeld), this season is about giving! I am not referring to the newest video games or toys, nor about perfectly wrapped, excessively indulgent presents. This season is a reminder to all of us that giving is about the selfless act of doing good for those less fortunate. In our 16 years of publishing, we have been actively taking any opportunity to spread the good word by spotlighting so many individuals, organizations and families who generously do good for others. This issue is no exception, and I truly hope that while giving presents is our past time during the holidays, that you take an opportunity to teach your children to give back, involve themselves in philanthropy, and learn how to experience the joy and cheer in helping others in need (as the above quote reminds us). Please take a look at our Clubs & Organization Directory in the Around Town section to find something your family can do to better our communities. Harvest Drive is one unbelievably successful organization where 100% of donations go to feed, clothe and help the people right here in Broward County. Working through schools, they are able to access families who are most in need. Supplies and donations are funneled to them directly with the help of thousands of students collecting, sorting and packing. We have provided all the information you need to help in the two page article featured in this issue. Please consider getting involved this season. Whether your family is well off, making ends meet or struggling, there is always

Teach the fundamental act of giving at a young age and it will yield a lifetime of purpose and responsibility family, not just during the holidays, but all year long. f you’re a Gen-X or Millennial household, there’s a looming monthly expense you may not have included in your budget: the cost of caring for aging parents or extended family. A March 2018 study from a major U.S. life insurer, titled “Financial and Lifestyle Costs of Caregiving” found that three in ten Americans are either presently serving as caregivers or have done so in the past, while one in five expect to do so in the future. Caregiving was defined as “a situation where you are responsible for providing care – or the resources for that care – to someone or several people over a substantial period of time.” Caring for elderly family members is not a new social trend. What is different, at least in the United States, is the extent to which caregiving may become the norm for successive generations. According to the report, “Gen X and even Millennials are the heart of the sandwich generation and struggling with the pressures of caring for aging family members and their own children while building financial security and maintaining a lifestyle.” Older Americans: Living Longer, Living Alone - In the past, caregiving duties were primarily managed by spouses; wives cared for aging husbands, and vice versa. But a range of demographic and social changes have altered this dynamic. A November 2016 report from Kaiser Health News points to increased longevity, a large and graying baby boom generation, the decline in marriage, the rise in divorce, increased childlessness and family mobility, as factors that have “upended the traditional caregiving support system.” As a result, “Americans spend less time than ever in a married state,” says Susan Brown, a sociologist from Bowling Green State University. Data from the 2015 U.S. Census reports that 43 percent of those 65 and older now live alone. And these aging single adults often have limited family connections to tap for caregiving assistance. Jonathan Vespa, a demographer for the Census, sums it up: “As people have fewer children, there are fewer people in that next generation to help take care of the older generation.” Younger Americans: Staying Single, or Marrying Later - Changes among younger generations affect the caregiving dynamic as well. More young adults are staying single, and those who do marry

are waiting until their late 20s. Both factors impact the younger generation’s caregiving abilities. Single households don’t have the economic efficiencies that usually come from marriage, i.e., two providers under one roof. And when married couples have children later, it makes the “sandwich” of simultaneously caring for both aging adults and growing children more likely – and more likely that caregiving will not be just an emotional and time commitment, but also a financial one. The Financial Impact of Caregiving - The “Financial and Lifestyle Costs of Caregiving” report found that approximately seven in 10 caregivers provide financial support. Support ranged from modest amounts, like paying co-pays on medications, to major lifestyle changes, like caregivers switching from full-time to part-time employment. Experienced caregivers reported making the following adjustments to provide financial assistance: • 67% Reduced living expenses • 25% Withdrew money from non-retirement savings • 21% Worked more, including additional employment • 21% Borrowed money • 19% Withdrew money from retirement savings • 19% Cashed in or sold assets • 17% Stopped or reduced contributions to non-retirement savings • 15% Stopped or reduced contributions to retirement savings Reading between the lines, many of these caregivers resorted to more than one of these options; i.e., besides reducing living expenses, they worked more, or borrowed money. The harsh reality: In almost every circumstance, caregiving exacts a toll on the personal finances of the caregiver.

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is proud to announce that for the 5th time its Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery was nationally ranked by US News and World Report among the best hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics in the country. We sat down with Dr. Matthew Fazekas, FAAP, CAQSM, a pediatric sports medicine and concussion specialist to discuss current trends in pediatric orthopaedics. Why is it so important that kids see a pediatric orthopaedic specialist? Kids are not little adults. They have open growth plates and normal developmental changes that may be occurring during the course of treating an injury. Seeing a specialist with training focused on the pediatric athlete can get them back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Who is best qualified to take care of young athletes who suffer a concussion? Concussions may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, or neck or by an indirect blow elsewhere on the body with an impulsive rotational force transmitted to the brain. This impact results in the rapid onset of impaired neurologic function that resolves on its own. The resolution of symptoms typically follows a sequential course. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.7 million individuals sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI in the United States every year. Individuals may suffer multiple traumatic events, especially if playing contact sports. The annual incidence of sports-related concussions in the United States is estimated between 1.6 and 3.8 million. Concussions occur in all sports; the majority of concussions occurring in organized sports are sustained in football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. The care of athletes with sports-related concussions is ideally performed by

healthcare professionals with specific training and experience in the assessment and management of concussions. The sports medicine physicians at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital are frequently involved in the care of patients with concussions and are specifically trained to provide care along the continuum of concussion from management of the acute injury to return-to-play decisions. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic was developed as a multi-disciplinary center for pediatric patients with TBI that streamlines access to care to subspecialties including neurology, neuropsychology, and vestibular therapy in addition to sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Is there anything an athlete can do to prevent concussions? Strengthening the neck musculature has been shown to decrease the risk of concussions. Currently, there is no conclusive evidence that helmets, mouthguards or headbands can prevent concussions. Do dancers require specialized care after trauma or for overuse injuries? Dancers and performing artists speak a sport specific language and may require specialized treatment that takes into account their activity. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s pediatric sports medicine program [U18] Sports Medicine developed a Performing Arts and Dance Medicine program centered around getting these athletes back into the studio in an expedited fashion that doesn’t involve only rest. With former company physicians from the Boston Ballet, our team speaks the language which helps quickly and accurately make the diagnosis and get the appropriate treatment plan started. For more information call 954 – 265 – 6300 or JDCH.com/ortho. Locations: Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Hollywood, Miramar, Wellington (2019), Weston.

Ah, the excitement of going back to school! New

classrooms, new teachers, new friends and classmates… not to mention new back packs, supplies, shoes and uniforms. For many children, the latter would not be possible, were it not for the Broward County Back to School Extravaganza. And this year, over 7,500 students benefited. $35.00 is all that is needed to outfit a child with what they need to start the school year off on the right foot. For the eighth year, the Children’s Services Council issued a challenge grant to fund back-to-school supplies for students identified by School Board Social Workers and community partners as being economically disadvantaged. Dozens of foundations, corporations, non-profits and individuals stepped up to provide appropriate funding and logistical support to ensure the success of the campaign. Four distribution events took place over two weekends: on July 28th at New Renaissance Middle School and Dillard High School, and on August 4th at Blanche Ely High School and Hallandale High School. As thousands of people lined-up to participate long before the gates opened at each venue, it was clear that the need is great and that events such as these are badly needed to ensure children

begin their school in the best of circumstances. “The kids are very happy and we are very thankful for everything that you are doing for the families here today,” said a father participant at Hallandale’s event with his wife and four children. “This is a great event. I particularly appreciate the new shoes and the book distribution,” said another parent at Ely. Hundreds of volunteers ensured smooth operations throughout. Robust resource fairs added to each family’s ability to receive materials, information and resources, including immunizations, eye exams, KidCare insurance and much more. DJ’s, face painting, games and snacks provided for a carnival like atmosphere, fun for the whole family. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies were also instrumental in ensuring friendly but effective crowd control support and overall smooth operations. The work of the Back to School Extravaganza committee will begin again early in the new year, as we look to continue making the beginning of the school year an exciting and rewarding time for all children. irror Lake Elementary is off and running to an outstanding new school year! Our Robotics Club is in full force with the goal of defending our 2017-1018 District Research Project Championship. This year our Robotics’ Club has 35 members in grades 3-5 which will allow us to have three VEX IQ teams competing in “Next Level Tournaments” throughout South Florida. For the second year in a row, Mirror Lake applied and was fortunate to be chosen to receive the Girl Empowerment Grant from The Vex IQ Company. This grant will allow us to have a female Vex IQ team compete in the “Next Level Tournaments.” Did you know only 24% of engineers are females? We will be hosting a celebration on October 11th honoring “International Day of the Girl.” We are hosting this event to generate enthusiasm with our female students in the field of engineering. Female engineers from local companies including FP & L will be visiting Mirror Lake to speak with our girls. They will be sharing their stories about college, their jobs, and what the engineering field is all about. We love our MLE volunteers, if you would like to volunteer, or donate to our Robotics’ Club, please call (754) 322-7100 and ask to speak with Ms. DeBruyne.

ropical Elementary celebrates 2018 with a look into the future and a reflection of the past few months. Fall brought many activities to Tropical. We had a parent volunteer and her child plant a baby Bassia Bakeriana tree on our campus which contributes to our already beautiful campus! It is a fast-growing tree that has beautiful pink flowers on it when it blooms. It’s also a host plant for the yellow Sulphur butterfly! Tropical Elementary already has a gorgeous butterfly garden on campus and we are very lucky to have parent volunteers to help with the beautification of our campus! In September, Tropical celebrated “International Peace Week” which included many fun activities which all promoted world peace. On September 28th, the students and faculty all got together under the direction of our fabulous Art teacher, Mrs. Hodges, to form a human “peace” sign. Tropical also had a Fall Family Festival at Seminole Park. There were games, photo booths, food trucks, silent auctions and a DJ to help celebrate the beginning of Fall. A great time was had by all! The next few months will be busy for Tropical Elementary. As the year progresses, we are becoming test ready! Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will meet the challenge of the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). We will continue to develop our reading, math, writing and science skills. lantation High School has had a fantastic start to the 2018/19 school year. With the Fall sports season in full swing the Colonels have made their mark with an undefeated start in Football and a drastic improvement in Girls Volleyball. Our Latinos in Action Club has continued its partnership with Mirror Lake Elementary School and celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month both on and off campus with a Spirit Week. We have also begun preparations for our annual Harvest Drive. The Plantation Football Team and Head Coach Steve Davis have carried the momentum from last year’s 9-1 campaign and are off to a 5-0 start, outscoring opponents 268-37. The Colonels offense is led by Junior Quarterback, Gerard Nesbitt, and a trio of Senior Running Backs: Elishah Barnwell, Hammersham White, and Kyle Walters. Opening holes for the Plantation running game and protecting Nesbitt are twin Offensive Linemen, Keon and Deon Martin. The electrifying offense is coupled by a stifling Defense anchored by slew of outstanding Seniors. Defensive Linemen Anthony Sumner and Khalill Bryan, and Linebackers Jakeem Hall and Devon Corker create a solid foundation up front. The secondary is commanded by Free Safety Otis Ragin and two outstanding Cornerbacks: Harold Sims and Syracuse University commit, Adrian Cole. The Colonels have State Championship aspirations and will continue to work toward that ultimate goal. The Girls Volleyball Team has made great strides this year as Head Coach Jello Moore Hughes heads the charge in her second season with the girls. A core group of seniors, Serena Jeudy, Raesha Pilgrim, Naomi-Angela Hill and Cheyenne Linton, have set the tone and aided in the development of their underclass teammates. Coach Moore Hughes continues to build the program and looks for greater success down the road.

Plantation High School’s Latinos in Action students met with Mirror Lake Elementary School Principal Ms. Veliz to begin tutoring with students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade. During Hispanic Heritage Month students are participating in Spirit Week events to highlight and educate the community about Latino culture. The week’s events included Latino Celebrity look-alike day, Telenovela character day, Team Jersey Day, and Cultural Day. Every year we unite and show our students the importance of giving to those in need with the Harvest Drive. Last year we were able to supply over 150 families with food and household items for the holidays with help from our local feeder schools and business partners. This year we are trying to make a greater impact on our community. Please join us by donating some of the following goods: laundry detergent, body wash/soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush toothpaste, dish soap, napkins, aluminum foil, milk (box & can), rice, canned tuna or other meat, canned sweet potatoes, pancake mix, syrup, gravy, cereal, oatmeal, pasta, spaghetti sauce (plastic or can), tomato paste, mac and cheese, cookies and snacks, peanut butter, jelly. ccording to FeedingAmerica.org, 1 in 8 people are food insecure and 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger translating to 74,730 children that go to bed hungry every night right here in South Florida. 25% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. This is why it is essential that community organizations such as Harvest Drive Florida get involved In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-six years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need through Harvest Drive. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

Another distinctive characteristic of Harvest Drive is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County for Thanksgiving. Distribution sites will be set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

SCHOOLS • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, throughout last year they made an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our local schools who are hungry. They also start each school year off by providing well stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

As the 2018-2019 school year started in August, Huntington Learning Center

and Sports & Activities Directory are proud to introduce you to the first quarter Academic Superstars. Jake H. was looking to improve his ACT sore and started at a 23. He increased his official ACT score 11 points all the way to a 34!!!. Gabbi G. increased her ACT score 10 points and went from a 22 all of the way to a 32! Both of these students are now applying to high level, competitive Universities. Hard work pays off. Jacob P. was a kindergarten student, who was struggling halfway through the school year. He increased his confidence and reading abilities exponentially and is now not only caught up, but ahead in 1st grade. This family learned that being proactive is key. Jacob’s brother attended Huntington a few years ago when he was struggling in 4th grade and has been “Most Outstanding Student” in middle school for 2 years in a row. “Huntington isn’t just a Band-Aid for the current issue; it’s a long term solution.” Gabbi G.

Jacob P.

Jake H.

Felicia G.

Felicia G. struggled through Middle School due to a lack of reading comprehension and math skills as well as social anxiety. She took a break from traditional school and started homeschooling after a year in middle school. She worked with Huntington Learning Center for about 9 months on building up her skills, not only in math and reading, but in study skills and coping skills to become a more responsible and confident student. She is now back in a traditional school setting and thriving. We couldn’t be more proud of the confidence and overall growth that Felicia made with Huntington Learning Center. If your child is struggling with any subject let Huntington Learning Center help and maybe they can be the next Academic Superstar.
