Welcome to an exciting new school year! I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer filled with fun activities and adventurous vacations. Now it is time to shift our focus back to education. In this issue, you will find tons of information to help you prepare for the school year: the official Broward County 2018-19 school calendar, updates from local schools, as well as Coral Springs and Parkland schools contact info, hours and 2018 FSA scores. There is also helpful advice on how to increase your child’s motivation and success and where and how to get involved with your local school. Looking to volunteer? Become a Broward County Public Schools volunteer and make an impact on the lives of so many children. Find the “How To” in our school section. We encourage all parents to join their school’s PTA or PTO. These organizations are more important than ever and give parents the opportunity to remain involved with their children and know what is going on at their schools. If you have not already signed your child up to participate in fall sports activities, now is the time. Please encourage your children to look through the magazine and choose one extracurricular activity or more that might interest them. This will help your child find a good balance between studying, activities and sports. These skills can help teach your child time management and leadership skills, as well as how to establish goals and develop a good work ethic. Check out our extensive events directory and make sure to attend the many wonderful events taking place in two dynamic cities. MSD students and their families are invited to attend Healing with the Arts at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. Sessions run from 3:00PM - 5:30PM on Tuesdays and 1:00PM - 4:00PM on Saturdays throughout September. If running or walking is your activity of choice, join us for the Parkland Dash on Sunday, October 7 starting at 7:00AM at Pine Trails Park. Commemorate our heroes of 9/11 and participate in the 5th Annual JPT stair climb, on Saturday, October 27. There are so many events to attend, hope to see you there. Dear Readers,

It is hard to believe how quickly the summer has flown by, especially with Broward County Public Schools starting earlier than usual this year on August 15. Many people have commented to me that they are not happy with such an early start to the school year. If you would like to have input on the school calendar for the 2019/2020 school year, please contact your School Board Member early this school year to find out how you can provide comments and suggestions. Besides the beginning of the school year, August is also an important month because elections take place on August 28. Did you know that the voter turnout in August is often very low – around 15%? While most of us think of November when it comes to elections, many local and county officials, such as judges and school board members, are elected in August. All 2-person judicial and school board races are decided in the August election. If these races have three or more candidates, the judicial and/or school board candidates who receive over 50% of the vote in August, are automatically elected to that seat. In addition to the primaries, judicial and school board elections, this August the Broward County School District is also asking the voters to approve a half a millage rate increase to go to “secure school resource officers, high quality teachers and staff, as well as secure important programs in district schools, and expand educational opportunities.” Please make it a point to vote in both August AND November. August election early voting takes place in Broward County from August 18 to 26 from 10am to 6pm. The early voting location in Parkland is at the P-REC (10559 Trails End) and the early voting location in Coral Springs is at the Northwest Regional Library (3151 University Drive). You can vote at either location or any of the other early voting sites throughout Broward County. On the August 28 Election Day, polls are open from 7am-7pm and you must vote at your designated polling place. To find your polling place for August 28, please visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website at www. browardsoe.org/Voter-Information/Voter-Lookup-Free-Access-System For the November election, in addition to the governor’s race, senate races and others, there will be 13 constitutional amendments, 11 county charter amendments, 3 Parkland charter amendments and a Broward County penny tax initiative for transportation on the ballot. Early voting takes place from October 22 to November 4, from 7am to 7pm. Election Day is November 6, from 7am to 7pm. Additional information about registering to vote and voting by mail can be found at www.browardsoe.org. In both August and November, please do your homework on the candidates, amendments and initiatives and vote! Your vote is your voice in this democratic process – use it! As we head into the fall, we have so many wonderful events going on in Parkland. he lazy hazy days of summer are soon coming to an end. Very soon the kids will be “back to school.” Stacey, I, and our three children (who are now in college!) know that this is the time of year that is so exciting and so busy. Keeping that in mind, here are a few helpful things to remember. August 3-5 is the sales tax holiday in Florida on back to school clothing and supplies. This is a great opportunity to save money. You also need to remember that proof of immunizations, medical exams, and other forms are due prior to registering for the school year. Check out Browardschools.com for answers to all your questions. Looking for after school opportunities? Explore the various programs that you enjoyed over the summer at our libraries that continue throughout the year. Want to learn sign language, 3-D printing? Use the internet? Or just read your favorite novel? Our libraries have it all! www.Broward.org/ library will give you all the information you need. In addition, Broward County has many sports opportunities

for the community. Your local parks play host to Baseball, Tennis, Soccer, Football leagues, and don’t forget Pickleball! There is a league and sport for everyone at any age. I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. It’s hard to believe school starts again in just a few weeks! Certainly with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy – and school shootings that have taken place throughout the country - safety is parents and educators number one concern. I want you to know for those of us who serve you from the City of Coral Springs, it is our number one priority. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which was signed into law in March, requires the School Board to provide for School Resource Officers or armed guardians at every school. The City of Coral Springs currently provides a School Resource Officer at every Broward County public school. Our police department has been proactively working with the Broward County School Board to increase the number of School Resource Officers assigned to our public high schools. Imagine and Renaissance Charter Schools - independently operated public schools funded by the state – are in discussions with the City to provide police officers on campus during the school year. We can all agree this new law and its provisions are a step in the right direction to better protect what is most important to all of us – our children. Speaking of our schools, I want to congratulate all of our ‘A’ rated schools - Country Hills, Eagle Ridge, Imagine Schools at Broward and Marjory Stoneman Douglas all maintained their ‘A” ratings. I could not be more proud of the fact that the Coral Springs Charter School received an ‘A’ rating for the 15th consecutive year. I look forward to seeing more ‘A’ ratings in the City as our educators and parents work together to ensure the highest quality education for students. The City is excited to announce that in addition to our annual 9/11 5K Remembrance Run on September 8th, this year we will welcome the 9 /11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit. Launched in 2013 by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the exhibit, which is housed in a 1,000 square foot trailer, is a tribute and educational tool that travels across the country. The exhibit will be located in the parking area between the Public Safety Building and Coral Springs Gymnasium (located at 2601 Coral Springs Drive). Pre-scheduled students from Coral Springs schools will have an opportunity to visit the exhibit each morning, with public viewing on September 11th from 2-8 p.m. and on September 12th from 4-8 p.m. I encourage residents to stay informed about both events by visiting coralspring.org/events. Interested in taking a one-night trip to Italy? If so, join us for the City’s annual International Dinner Dance - Bella Notte in Italia – That’s Amore - on Saturday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay. Guests are encouraged to wear multicultural dress to the event, which will include Italian cuisine, dancing and live entertainment for all to enjoy. 11:00AM. Be Kind To Animals is held at the Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital in Sportsplex Park in Coral Springs (Sample Rd & Sawgrass Expressway), each Sunday. Guests are introduced to a featured animal in SNC’s exhibit area which includes both native and exotic animals that could not be released due to their injuries or the fact that they do not belong in Florida. Participants will learn how to live with Florida’s varied and unique wildlife and how their choices, especially when it comes to pet responsibility, affects the quality of life for our native wildlife and for our pets. Bring the family to enjoy a unique and up-close experience and to learn how to be kind to all animals. The feature begins promptly at 11:00AM and afterwards, guests can enjoy a self-guided tour through the exhibit area. Feature offering may be canceled in inclement weather. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, the COTA Foundation, Coral Springs Auto Mall and the Coral Springs Museum of Art, this program is being offered without charge to anyone in the community who needs a safe place for healing. The club offers amateur athletics in track and field (ages 6-18 years old) and cross-country (7–14 years old) for both boys and girls. Sign-ups for cross-country are from July – September and for track and field from November – March. We offer the opportunity to participate and compete in AAU and USATF track and field and cross-country events. Our cross-country season is from September – December, and our regular track and field season begins in February and ends with the league championship in late May or early June. This is the end of competition for most athletes. The championship track season begins in June and end with the AAU Junior Olympic Games, which is held during the first week of August every year. Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+.Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15 from March- May. Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an

accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (VR)

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a federal-state agency that helps people with disabilities prepare for, get, or keep a job. VR offers Transition Youth Services, which help students with disabilities train for a job, continue their education, or find a job after high school. Each student will have the opportunity to participate in career counseling, work readiness training, and work experiences in the community. Students will also learn about self-advocacy and achieving independence through employment. I can’t find anybody to play with. I don’t have the time. That’s why we have decided it’s time to make it FUN, EXCITING, EASY, FAMILY FRIENDLY, LESS TIME CONSUMING, AND AFFORDABLE. To do that we have first developed programs especially designed for juniors. At Golf Channel Academy we have created team building activities and a comfortable environment for kids to learn the game of golf while meeting new friends. The Junior programs offer a wide variety for all ages. Whether a beginner as young as 4 years old, or a junior golfer trying to make the high school team. How to Increase Your Child’s School Motivation and Success By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

As the start of the new school year approaches, parents

and educators are faced with the challenge of getting students back to the books in the midst of their “end-of-summer-break blues.” This can be stressful for all involved, as issues with school motivation and performance often impact adults just as much as students. However, there are ways you can help your child make this school year the best one yet!

Here’s what you can do: Give your child a sense of control. Children are much more likely to be engaged in their education when they feel that they play an important role in the process. Ask your child questions such as, “What kind of goals do you have for this school year? How can I help you achieve them?” (Hint: Be flexible and supportive in hearing their responses, especially when they don’t align with your preferences – some students might hope to get an A in Science this year, while others might aim to become a better artist, and both are great goals.) Also, look for opportunities to give your child options as often as possible. Allow them to help make decisions around matters such as selecting elective courses, creating a homework schedule, and choosing methods for educational support. For example, you may ask, “Would you like to work on your homework at the library or at home today?” or “Would you prefer to try the online tutoring or the live tutoring program?” Avoid criticism or “guilt-tripping”. While often stated with the intention of using concern to motivate your child, critical or guilt-inducing statements are ineffective and sure to backfire. Remarks such as, “You’re not going to make it very far with these kind of grades” can lead to a negative association with academics as well as low self-esteem, which further decrease school motivation and performance. Instead, try this next tip…

Use praise and rewards for academic effort more than outcome. In a performance-based setting such as school, students with academic difficulties are particularly vulnerable to issues with self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall school motivation. By praising and rewarding your child’s academic effort more than their outcomes, you communicate the value of perseverance as well as that their worth is not determined by a letter or a number value. Acknowledge your child’s academic effort by using statements such as, “I’m so proud of how focused you have been on this project” and “Your dedication to studying for this test is wonderful.” Ironically enough, by emphasizing effort rather than grades, grades often improve as a result of your praise and rewards increasing their effort! Ensure balance. Children and adults alike require a healthy balance between work and recreation to perform at their optimal level. Help your child establish this balance by encouraging breaks, making time for creativity, getting plenty of physical activity, and scheduling social activities. Seek professional help if hitting a roadblock. Often, issues such as attentional deficits, learning disorders, and emotional problems initially appear as low school motivation. If the tips shared in this article are not proving beneficial for your child’s academic performance, there might be more going on than meets the eye. elcome to Coral Park Elementary (CPE) for the 2018-19 school year! As a Title 1 School, we currently service over 625 students from Pre-K to 5th grade. Our dedicated and passionate staff is committed to fostering a learning environment where safety, respect, accountability, and support are highly evident. While focusing on the academics, we also support and develop the social and emotional well-being of our students. We have a full day Pre-K. Parents now have the option of Free VPK throughout the school year with an optional extended day enrichment program. For our older students we established a Blended/Personalized Learning Program. Each of our third, fourth and fifth grade students will be provided with their own laptop and instructed by dedicated teachers using a blended, personalized learning model. We also accommodate our special needs students with the “A”-Team Special Program. This program is designed to support our Pre-K through fifth grade students who have been identified with special needs. Our specials include: Art, Music, and Physical Education. Students in K through 5th grade receive grade level appropriate lessons in student success skills delivered by our highly qualified and experienced school counselor. Our renowned Play Pal program,

partners 3rd through 5th grade students with students that have special needs in grades K to 5. The program aims to integrate and help students with special needs to receive athletic, academic and social peer support. We develop and promote leadership skills through Safety Patrols and Student Council for students in our intermediate grades. WCPE broadcasts our live daily news with student news anchors, producers, and camera crew. There are after school options including: Aftercare provided by (CAS) for a fee. There is also chorus and ukulele clubs for our third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Carnegie Hall… The Opportunity of a Lifetime T

ragedy had struck MSD just three short weeks ago. With heavy hearts and determination, the wind symphony of MSD traveled all the way to New York to visit and perform at Carnegie Hall. “We didn’t want to give up this amazing opportunity, so we all worked together to remain strong and perform as well as we possibly could,” sophomore Troy Archer said. Although the trip started with a flight delay, due to stormy weather, the group pushed each other to remain positive. The musically talented group finally made it to the Big Apple and couldn’t wait to start on their adventure. Upon arrival, they were welcomed with open arms by New Yorkers all over the city. For the first couple of days, the students and chaperones explored the city and practiced for their big performance in between. They had the opportunity to visit Ellen’s Stardust Diner and the Hudson River on a dinner cruise among many other exciting tourist destinations. The wind symphony attended the Broadway show, “Wicked,” on March 4. All of the members of the band had a chance to see the show and enjoy the great music along with a personal meeting with the cast. On Tuesday, March 6, the day consisted of preparation for the big showcase that would take place at 8 p.m. Excitement filled the air as the wind symphony prepared to perform. When they were ready to perform, they played “Symphonic Movement,” “Symphony No.3 Finale,” “Forever summer” and “Gavorkna Fanfare.” One song, “The

World Was a Secret,” was written specifically for their performance by composer Jerome VanBuskirk. Their performance lasted about 35 minutes and was followed by five other performances by various orchestras. The performance was followed by a standing ovation from the crowd. They won a gold trophy to show for their accomplishment. “Everyone was really excited to perform since we had been practicing since the beginning of the school year and were finally ready,” sophomore Katie Hebert said. “The most emotional part was the last song called ‘Symphony No. 3 Finale’ because everyone was crying for our school along with the band director and members.” It was a truly magical moment for the performance and all in attendance that evening. While they were at Carnegie Hall, a special guest made a surprise appearance. Comedian Seth Meyers wanted to show his respect and support for the MSD students. His message to the students was that they are taking something horrible and channeling it into something beautiful. “It was so cool to meet Seth Meyers in person and hear him giving us such amazing words of encouragement,” Archer said. The trip ended even more eventful than it began. The storm still stirring , resulted in an even longer flight delay. The group, exhausted from an exciting adventure, made it home safely around 2 a.m. Though tired and weary, they were grateful for the experience. The group took home wonderful memories, encouragement from NYC and a feeling of pride in their talents and for their school. #MSDSTRONG!!!


SCHOOLS for the year will be, “PAWS-itive Attitude, PAWS-itive Results!” Over the summer the school letter grades were released from the state. Forest Hills Elementary maintained their “B” letter grade. We are very proud of all of our students, and look forward to the school year ahead. This year Forest Hills will be in the final year of a three year, Children’s Literacy Initiative grant. During year one and two student data in ELA (English Language Arts) increased, moving Forest Hills from a school letter grade of “C” to a “B”. We are also in year three of our Dual Language program where students will learn Spanish, along with some of the customs and history associated with the Spanish language. These are just a couple of the phenomenal programs we have at Forest Hills Elementary.

H

ow long have you been coming to Huntington? Since December 2017 What do you do here at Huntington that is different than what you do in school or when you do homework? I spend a lot of time with just me and the teachers working on specific areas that I struggle with such as reading comprehension and mathematics. When you first came to Huntington, what specifically did you need help with? Reading, Math and SAT prep. Was there any specific way Huntington made things easier to learn? Explain. They helped me focus on areas I needed to improve on rather than working on a lot of topics at the same time. How do you like your instructor/tutor at Huntington? What is the best thing about him/her? The instructors are awesome. They are very helpful for more than just tutoring. They give good advice and talk about reality. An example I can provide is that they are helping me figure out what I want to do when I graduate and what paths to avoid for attending colleges (like non-accredited colleges). What do you think you want to be when you grow up? Is school important to do that? What subjects do you think you need to study to do that job? I want to work in the Kinesiology field, specifically work with people who need help recovering from physical injuries. School is very important to be able do that since school is probably the only place that will push you to learn these things rather than being at home and becoming distracted. I will need mathematics, psychology, and anatomy classes. Based on how you have improved your learning at Huntington, do you think other kids should get the same kind of help? Yes. Huntington is a great place to be tutored, to become more knowledgeable and to have a better understanding of how to think outside of the box.

Do you think that being a better learner makes you happier? Why? Yes it does because I don’t have to be shy about talking about my grades; I don’t feel embarrassed anymore. Are you worried about harder classes in the next grade? Yes and no. Yes, because I don’t know what to expect. No, because I know I have support. Thinking back to when you first started Huntington, have you changed from then until now? How? Yes, very much. I have higher SAT scores, by almost 200 points. I have a better understanding of school and I am getting better grades. I’m more confident and I now realize how important college is for my future life. Have you seen the change in your son’s life? Dad - “My wife and I have seen a remarkable change in Alex. His confidence level in how he approaches taking an exam is remarkable. We both saw an immediate change in his grades and his SAT test scores. His first time taking the SAT he was very upset with his scores and was worried about getting into college. Huntington worked very hard with him and since then he has taken the exam 2 more times and each time his score has dramatically changed; to the point that he is eligible for scholarships.”

Ramblewood Middle has had a busy summer preparing for

the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. We are starting new projects, a new roof and more technology plus new restroom construction. We are adding a new class to our curriculum, Virtual Enterprise International, a business education class taught only in a few middle schools in the country. This year we will be “Anchored In Success”, our new theme for the school year. Our focus will be project and problem based learning for our curriculum. The students will learn to identify and solve real world issues that face our community. We could not achieve our educational goals without the help of our PTO. Please consider joining and volunteering with them, their efforts truly enhance our school. The first PTO meeting will be held on Thursday, August 23, at 6:30pm in the media center.

Ramblewood Middle relies on their business partners. We are very active with their “Partners in Excellence” and support local businesses and in turn support our students, teachers and school. We are also a proud member of the Coral Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce. We feel it is important to support our city, community and all who live and work in it. mproving outcomes for adults in the workplace is my field of expertise. I assess employers’ relationships with their teams and customers. I learn about what they want, at every level of the organization. I then teach them how to win. How to reach their individual and group goals. Recently, I have been asked to take these skills and speak with teens. My opening question is typically, Why You? The answer to this question allows people to see why they stand out and why they should be selected for a promotion or retained. I realized that this question can help a teen audience as well. Why you? Can be asked about relationships and responsibility broadly and is undoubtedly age appropriate to teen issues. Why should your parents feel confident about you taking the car? Why should they let you go to a party? Why should they allow you to stay home alone for the first time? Why should you be hired as a babysitter? Why should a friend confide in you? The answer to each of these questions boils down to one word- TRUST. Sounds quite simple, but it is so profound. It does not matter your age, gender, sexual orientation race or religion- when dealing with people, one of the consistent solutions to problem-solving is trust. This is summed up perfectly by Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Trust gives people a sense of security. Trust is a belief, a feeling that is challenging to explain, but the very foundation needed to solve many of life’s problems. However, trust is not something that can be forced, demanded or even requested, it must be earned. Trust is not something we do or say once or twice. Trust is earned based on our patterns of repetitive action. No matter what relationship you are in, parent-child, spouses, friends, employees, or any other, trust or lack of it, will affect your view of that relationship in a positive or negative light. The definition of trust describes it as the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. It is therefore incredibly important to earn trust and to learn how to trust in each and every relationship. If you want your friends to feel they can rely on you, be trustworthy. If you want your parents to let you take on more, show them they can trust you by repeatedly demonstrating that you are worthy. Stephen Covey says, “Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.” So…why you? Because you have earned my trust. begun and you and your child want to start things off on the right foot. Whether last year was your child’s best year yet or he or she faced some challenges, it’s always a good idea to take time at the beginning of the new year to reflect, set goals, and focus. How can you encourage your child to make this year a great one? Here are several tips for parents: Set the tone for positivity. A positive attitude will help children overcome difficulty in school and life. Parents who embrace an optimistic mindset influence their children to do the same. The goal is to help children believe that every challenge or misstep is an opportunity to grow and become better. Talking about admirable role models, who have overcome roadblocks to achieve big things, reminds children that nobody has a completely smooth path—and they shouldn’t be discouraged if their journey has bumps along the way. Explore what went right last year. The simple exercise of reflection is powerful, helping children look back on what they learned, where they were most successful, the experiences with teachers and other students that were most memorable and transformative. Parents can take time as they and their children prepare to go back to school to talk about what went right last year, what they would like to change and whether there are any specific adjustments they want to make, such as their study routine. Talk about what is (and isn’t) in their control. So much in life isn’t in our control, so it’s an important reminder for children to focus on what is. To succeed in school, children must pay attention in class, give every subject their best effort and ask for help when they need it. When a child receives a poor grade, parents should encourage their children to think about what they could have done to prepare more effectively for the assignment or test and make a plan to do better next time. Children who consistently take ownership of their school experience—and assume responsibility for it—are more grounded and motivated. Commit to daily organization. Staying organized is a challenge for just about everyone. For children who struggle

to keep on top of things, now is the time to revisit the homework routine and determine what needs changing. Parents should go over best practices for using the daily planner to keep track of homework and important dates as well as “housekeeping” items like a good process for filing school paperwork and keeping binders and backpacks tidy. Checklists around the house are useful tools to reinforce those daily to-dos. Set goals. Goal setting is such an important part of the kickoff to a new school year. Encouraging a growth mindset and helping children get into the right frame of mind to give school their best effort. Over a few nights, parents should sit down with their children to talk about (and write down) academic and personal goals for the year. There is great value in including in this list some of the steps needed to achieve those goals and discussing how Mom and Dad can offer support. Even a little effort toward helping your child prepare for a new school year will make a big difference. Your child will feel calmer and more prepared, making for a smooth transition from summer break to school mode—and a happier household overall.

ypically, when we think of after school activities we think of sports and activities that require physical effort. However, there is a whole world of activities that develop children’s intellect and are proven to be great tools for school and social life. Intellectual activities include those activities in which children have fun and gain knowledge on a specific subject. Chess is one of those activities in which children not only have a great deal of fun, but they also gain a variety of valuable skills while they learn and play. The main goal of chess is for children to understand logical strategy to foresee and predict consequences of action, therefore developing critical and logical thinking skills. Chess teaches children to be independent while learning to make decisions by themselves. It encourages children’s creativity and imagination as they become more inventive through play while developing new strategies and moves. Chess is self-motivating, encouraging children to search for the best move and the best plan to get to Check Mate! It is a rewarding and fun activity because the more children practice, the better players they become, and not one game is exactly the same as another. Players can create new moves and develop new strategies every time they play.

We are very excited about the teaching and learning planned for the 2018-2019 school year! Our theme this year will be “Ride the Wave of Knowledge”. Our focus will be centered around meeting the needs of our individual students and growth of knowledge. Ramblewood Elementary will continue with our Dual Language program. The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to become fully bilingual by learning, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English and in Spanish. We will continue with the program this year in Kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade and fifth grade then next year, expand the program to Ramblewood Middle School. Don’t forget Ramblewood is a uniform school. Our expectation is that every child wears their uniform and/or school colors. Waivers are available in the front office. If you need after care, “Ramblewood Elementary Before and After School Care” is available before school from 6:45-7:45 a.m. and after school from 2:00-6:00 p.m. The aftercare program offers a variety of activities such as homework help, Yoga/ Zumba, Makerspace (STEM), Drama/Charades, Lego Club, Cooking, Dimention U, Game Room, Computers/Technology and Arts and Crafts just to name a few. WHO IS A BCPS VOLUNTEER?

A BCPS volunteer is an individual with a sincere interest in contributing to the education of our students. Volunteers actively serve during regular hours at one or more schools or departments, several hours at a special one-time activity or event or work on school projects at home. Under the supervision of school or department personnel, a volunteer provides supportive assistance, which complements and enriches the environment.

HOW DO I BECOME A BCPS VOLUNTEER? • Complete and submit a volunteer application. • Check application status. Wait one week and contact the school or department you selected to check your approval status. • Get a volunteer badge at the school or department. This badge may be used at any District location during the school year.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF VOLUNTEERISM DO

• Complete an online application form before helping in the school. • Assist in the class to which you are assigned. • Set a good example for students by your manner, appearance and behavior. • Sign in and out when entering and leaving a school campus. • Wear a volunteer badge when helping with school activities.

DON’T

• Give students medication. • Access or divulge any student’s grades, records and abilities, which are governed by confidentiality rules and policies. • Supervise a classroom or discipline students. These actions are the responsibilities of the teacher and school.

SECURITY CLEARANCES: LEVEL 1 AND LEVEL 2

Level 1 Clearance – All volunteers must complete an application and receive approval as Level 1 volunteers before service begins at school. Level 2 Clearance – Additional screening is required ONLY for volunteers participating as: Overnight field trip chaperones (excluding Grad Night), Athletic coaches and Band coaches. NOTE: Level 2 screening is requested by the school administration and is completed every five years. However, all Level 2 cleared volunteers must renew their personal information annually. To renew the Level 2 clearance, visit www. fieldprintbrowardschools.com. You will be prompted to enter a Fieldprint code for renewal. The code is FPBCPSScVolAnRen.
