Dear Readers, As we welcome the New Year, it is my intention to bring hope & healing to our community, honor & remember those who were lost, and shine a light on some of the resources available as we continue to navigate this complicated path forward for our community. Please look through our extended event directory on the following pages. The Coral Springs Museum of Art has created healing through art programs and our city leaders have coordinated many community events intended to bring the community together through fun and innovative events. Our feature article spotlights 17 Service Projects created with the help of the amazing, non-profit organization, Hands on Broward. They began these projects with the help of community members and the families’ input. I am so proud to share these projects with you. Whatever you choose to do this year, I hope you find a way to get involved in our community and get out and play. Take some time to enjoy our wonderful Florida weather, head out to the parks and enjoy the many outdoor events during this time of year. I encourage you to take time for yourself to achieve your personal goals and to stay healthy. We have some great resources you should check out so you have the tools to achieve your goals. There are health and fitness classes, schools and organizations that desperately need volunteers to help them be successful, there are thousands of online class opportunities, as well as hobbies and workshops that fit every talent and personality. Our school year is in full swing and as always, our kids, teachers and staff are doing amazing things. Athletic achievements, charity projects and academic accolades are so abundant, we couldn’t possibly list them all, so please review the school news section. While it may only be February, it’s never too early to start planning for spring and summer break. Check out our Camp Directory so you can find the perfect camp for your child!

My best to you,

Dear Readers,

8

ONE YEAR AGO, on February 14, 2018, our community was changed forever. We all remember where we were and what we were doing when we received word that there was some kind of shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We all remember where we were when we learned that what occurred was, in fact, a mass shooting that took the lives of Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang. One only needs to look back at texts, emails, phone messages and social media posts from that day to be reminded of the confusion, the shock, the uncertainty and the fear that consumed us and that, to this day, remains with so many. Fear continued to escalate as parents frantically searched for their children, rumors of those murdered surfaced, the media frenzy descended on our city and images of our bedroom community and people that we know were now making national and international news. For those that were not there, the worst moments were when reality hit us in the form of receiving phone calls from friends who had their loved ones taken or injured—or walking into the Marriott hotel and seeing so many people we knew who were waiting to hear about the fate of their then-missing family members. We had always heard acts of evil like this could happen anywhere, and happen all too frequently—but now it happened here… in Parkland. The vigil held at Pine Trails Park the following night showed our community the outpouring of support we had from all around the county, the state, the country and the world. Then the following day, the first of 17 funerals took place. Thousands of people from all over attended the funerals to express their condolences and show their support and love. We saw so many people we knew. We cried together, hugged one another and wondered how any of this could be happening. How could these families get through this, how could the community get through this, how long would it be before people would forget about us, just like after every other mass shooting, and move on? It took some time before the names of those that were injured were released – Ashley Baez, Anthony Borges, Isabel Chequer, Justin Colton, Alexander Dworet, Samantha Fuentes, Samantha Grady, Marian Kabachenko, Kyle Laman, Stacey Lippel, Kheshava Managapuram, Samantha Mayor, Daniele Menescal, William Olson, Genesis Valentin, Benjamin Wikander and Madeleine Wilford. And beyond the injured, we saw from talking with the families of those that were taken, the families of the injured, and everyone who was at MSD that day, there would be both incredible physical injuries and scars as well as emotional and traumatic scars that everyone would carry from February 14th forward. In the aftermath we had marches, walk outs and walk ups. We had new and reinvigorated activists of all ages on many different issues: family members, students, parents, neighbors, friends and many who had previously given up hope were participating in trying to make change. Changes were made to Florida law and to laws in other states. Investigations were underway, reports were published and elections were happening. Throughout all of the “loud” things that were going on, we also had many people just helping one another—local people, people who lived far away, friends, neighbors, loved ones and complete strangers. We were reminded of how precious and fleeting life can be. Parents hugged their children tighter and family members and friends said “I love you” more often. As we honor and remember those who were taken on February 14, we continue to work toward healing the community, looking out for one another, fixing the problems, improving the laws and making a difference in our world. We cannot do this in one day or one year and we cannot do this alone. Our families, our students, our volunteers and our community have been tested and we are rising to the occasion. We will never forget and we will never stop working to try and make things better. Continue to stand with us, continue to remember us and continue to be there for one another as we navigate this new path forward. Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “Today’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,”

says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to

businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. By Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine

F

or many in our close-knit Northwest Broward community, Valentine’s Day will never be the same. A day of love and friendship turned into a day of senseless, tragic violence. It seems like everyone in our area knows someone who was affected in one way or another by this horrific act. While our community, unfortunately, may be known for the events of February 14, 2018, we will also be recognized as a community who, despite political differences, came together to enhance the national debate, push for safer schools, safety reforms and gun safety. We still feel the intense effects of that dreadful day in our community, but collectively we are picking up the pieces and moving forward. So many have come together to take action, both large and small. We want to be a part of a solution. Together we will make positive change. In an emergency, the right tools to respond to someone in need, is the difference between life and death. Since the MSD shooting, we have heard how the radio systems, while functional, were inadequate and overwhelmed. Broward is currently operating on a radio system built at a time when we had half the population and less physical infrastructure. It must be our top priority to upgrade to the brand new P25 radio system. This system will bring Broward County into the 21st century as quickly as possible. This will provide our first responders with a state-of-the-art system that will provide a quicker response for future emergencies. Included in the system is the installation of the “Text to 911” in Broward County. “Text to 911” will be available countywide starting this year. In an emergency, this will allow someone to send a message to law enforcement, or an individual with a disability to request help. This new technology will enhance our response capabilities in an emergency. After the MSD shooting, the legislation, while working with the County Commission

and County Administration, has made sure that Bleed Kits are installed within all county facilities alongside defibrillator equipment. We have also seen local cities adopt similar policies. The kits allow anyone to create tourniquets and provide basic first aid for an individual before responders even arrive. These kits, along with defibrillators, create an opportunity to save more lives. In response to the tragedy at MSD, the County Commission proposed an ordinance that will install tougher regulations on the sale and possession of firearms in Broward County. Together with other municipalities, Broward County is challenging state preemption laws in a court of law. We have also worked with the League of Women Voters to promote trigger locks and other educational offerings to encourage gun safety and help prevent future issues. We cannot bring back the 17 people lost on that day, but we owe it to their memory and in their honor to do everything we can to help prevent this from happening again. Our community partners and residents are doing what they can to help elevate the debate. I continue to stand with our community to advocate for all these vitally important changes, locally, statewide, and nationally. In continuing to serve District 3, we hold office hours at the following locations on the third Wednesday of every month. From 10:00-11:00 AM at the Northwest Regional Library (3151 North University Drive), 2:00-3:00 PM at the Tamarac Community Library (8701 West Commercial Blvd) and 4:00 to 5:00 PM in North Lauderdale at the Saraniero Branch Library (6901 Kimberly Blvd). Please call 954-357-7003 to schedule an appointment with a member of my staff. We encourage you to reach out to us. I am always available to discuss any questions or concerns and can be reached at MUdine@Broward.org or (954) 357-7003. Please follow me on social media, @ MichaelUdine on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, to receive important updates and see what is happening in our community.

W

hen tragedy struck one year ago, The Parkland and Coral Springs communities rallied around the 17 families to help them get through the initial shock and horrific sense of loss. While the pain is no less intense, the families want to move through mourning for their loved one to honoring their memory through acts of service. The non-profit HandsOn Broward organization, in coordination with the 17 families, and a dedicated committee, has created 17 unique and wonderful projects in

honor of each Eagle. Each project aims to help a cause that was either embraced by the victim or that celebrates a hobby or interest important to them. While everyone grieves differently, all the families agree that working on these service projects is the best way to honor their loved one. To give back to the community through service and gratitude proves that love and kindness will always win over hate and evil. HandsOn Broward was the perfect organization to help with these projects. HandsOn Broward inspires,

equips and mobilizes people to effect positive change in Broward County. By using the power of people and socially responsible businesses, they transform local communities through meaningful hands-on projects that make a difference. HandsOn Broward mobilizes thousands of people each year to revive schools, parks, playgrounds, nonprofits and neighborhoods. All of their volunteers help create art in public spaces, build sustainable gardens, teach financial literacy, help respond to disasters and work to protect the

EVENTS place. There was no better way to demonstrate the amazing traits of our victims than creating a project that celebrated their passions. Since these projects are a way to help the families heal, the projects are set up as a by family invitation only. There is an opportunity for the community to help with these projects by going to the HandsOn Broward website and looking at the Parkland Hearts service project link. Your generous donation is the perfect way for you to positively contribute to the success of each service

opportunity. Some projects will be more visible than others, but all the projects are important to the families and to the communities receiving the service. An Amazon wish list has been established to purchase paint, brushes, plants, building materials, canned goods, and any other supplies needed to complete the community service projects. Each angel has given back to the community by inspiring their families; friends and community volunteers to participate in the service projects featured above.

environment. They provide opportunities to make an impact are available year-round on a daily basis to people of all ages. However, this set of projects was a unique endeavor for HandsOn Broward. The projects were not just meant to help those in need, they were meant to honor the victims we lost. Each one of those we lost had a passion to either help people or animals that needed it the most. These were individuals who were striving each day to make the world around them a better

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms,

equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+.Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15 from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE

Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

Why Doesn’t My Child Listen to Me? And What Can I Do About It? By Dr. Dovid Kirzner and Dr. David Yudell

“D aniel! Daniel!! Daniel!!! Where are you?!” “Mom, I’m coming! What do you want?!”

“It’s about time! How many times do I have to call your name for you to come here? When I call you, I expect that you listen immediately!” “Mom, you’re so annoying! I was in middle of playing Fortnite with my friends! And no, I did not walk the dog, clean my room, or throw out the garbage; I’ll get to my chores later!” “Daniel! I’ve had enough with your utter disrespect and disregard for the house rules! You’re grounded from using any electronics for the next two weeks!” Does this parent-child interaction sound remotely familiar? If you find yourself engaging in similar interactions with your child, what distressing thoughts and emotions do you experience during these exchanges? When this interaction occurs prior to sending your child off to school, how do you feel about yourself while working or grocery shopping in preparation for dinner? When this interaction occurs prior to bedtime, what thoughts cross your mind when you finally manage to retire for the night? According to Dr. Russel Barkley, many ineffective, conflictual parent-child interactions are due to The Coercive Behavior Cycle in which parents and children often engage. This pattern of communication involves parents’ increased display of irritation and annoyance towards their children for their continued noncompliance. Ultimately, parents force their children to comply through physical intimidation, making threats, or raising their voice. Alternatively, parents may surrender to their children’s defiant noncompliance and complete the task themselves. When responding to our children accordingly, we inadvertently reward their negative behaviors and model the notion that defiance pays off!

In an effort to break this cycle, we first have to refrain from acquiescing to our children’s noncompliance. Therefore, when making a request to your children plan for them to either comply or experience a negative consequence. It is okay to give them an extra chance or an extra moment to respond, but avoid asking more than twice. Lastly, when you do tell them the consequence, keep it reasonable and follow through. This is a major downfall that many parents face – over punishing or empty threats. Another concept to consider involves checking in with oneself prior to asking your children to do something. Consider whether you have the energy to follow through and if you have a consequence planned. Both concepts are very important to consider so you do not walk into a situation ill prepared. Alternatively, you may want to make a smaller request that can be handled with less chance for failure. Creating appropriate consequences takes planning, experience, help or all three. (to be continued…) We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrKirzner@DrYudell.com or DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

PARKSIDE ELEMENTARY DIVES INTO THE NEW YEAR!

Happy 2019! All of us at Parkside Elementary School hope that you and

your families had a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year. Over the last few weeks, we have had several things to celebrate here at our school. In November, we had our annual school wide Thanksgiving Luncheon. We fed over 1,000 students, parents, grandparents and staff members. This was a special time for us to show our families how thankful we are for all they do for our school. A big THANK YOU goes out to our cafeteria staff for another amazing job. Throughout December we enjoyed our field days, the PTA Holiday Shop, our chorus’ Holiday performance and our annual Polar Express Day filled with a little of the Florida Snow and a visit from the South Florida Fire Truck and Marshall. All of these activities led us into the winter break. Throughout the next few months, we will be preparing for our Kindergarten

Round-Up, which will be held on Wednesday, February 6th at 7:00 pm and Friday, February 8th at 8:30 am in the school media center. If you or someone you know in the area has a child who will be entering Kindergarten in the fall, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Parkside and a typical Kindergarten day. You can also see how to get involved and what you need to do in order to register. Parkside is one of the few schools in Coral Springs with space for reassignments; so if you are interested in knowing more about our school, come out and join us for one of these events. Another wonderful upcoming event is our Annual Exhibition on March 14th from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is a showcase of all the academic projects we have been working on throughout the year. We will host our free spaghetti dinner on this evening as well. We hope to see many of you at these upcoming events. Have a great 3rd quarter!

oral Springs Middle School is heading into an exciting spring filled with activities for students, parent night events, and matriculation meetings. On January 26th, CSMS hosted the District middle school Debate Tournament which is almost certain to be an annual event. Our Debate Team, who regularly participates in monthly district tournaments, was thrilled to be the host school for this all day special event. In the month of February, our incoming 6th graders will “walk the shoes” of a middle school student when they tour their new school on a field-trip day. For our 8th grade students, Coral Glades and Stoneman Douglas high schools will visit to give students an orientation about the next part of their journey and how to choose the courses for their personalized path. On February 28th, CSMS will be holding their first ever Curriculum Night. This will highlight all

Forest Hills Spotlight

S.T.E.M.: During the month of December students in grades

pre-K through fifth began learning the basics of computer science to how technology has made life easier and more convenient. The week of December 3rd through the 9th was the Hour of Code. Students across the nation participate by completing at least one hour of computer programming by following a series of tutorials. The students in the primary grades completed mazes using Kodable while those in the secondary grades learned about Blockly a drag and drop computer programming tool used in elementary schools. Students in grades 2nd-5th worked with Blockly to complete tasks including Angry Birds. Planeteers: Students in Planeteers worked hard in the garden during the month of December. They weeded and maintained the current garden beds. The garden includes: sunflowers, peppers, spinach, and

tomatoes. In addition, Planeteers worked hard at carving out a new bed to plant squash. We are so excited to see our plants germinate and hope to enjoy our upcoming harvest when we return from break. Robotics: The Forest Hills Elementary robotics team has been working hard to create their Flex Bot. In addition, they are in the beginning stages of putting their computer programming skills to work to prepare for their competition in February. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Project Winners: On Thursday, January 17, 2019 (5-8 p.m.) these students received awards for their projects at this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration given by the City of Coral Springs. We want to congratulate these students for being recognized by the city, and for all of their hard work.

SCHOOLS

The second semester at Coral Park Elementary is exploding

with learning and kindness. Our outside walkways have been decorated with banners made by every classroom reminding everyone to “Start with Hello” and “Kindness Matters”. We are beginning the work to build a Peace Garden and add buddy benches throughout our campus. We will start this project by committing Thursday, February 14th to A Day of Honor in Service and Love. We will begin by having all students and staff members participate in campus beautification activities. On January 30th, we are “Powering up our Math Skills”. We have invited parents to explore the wonders of math by participating in an evening of exciting hands on learning activities and games. On this evening, we will also celebrate our second quarter academic and character trait accomplishments by recognizing our students who earned Honor Roll and Character Trait excellence. As we are full swing into this school year, we are also gearing up for the 2019-2020 schoolyear, too! On February 21st, we will be “Rounding Up” our incoming kindergarten and VPK students for an informational session. In addition, our “STEAMy Summer Camp” is returning to Coral Park. We

Our Band, Orchestra, and Choir students not only impressed us with their beautiful Winter Concerts, they wowed us as they marched in the City of Coral Springs Holiday Parade. The musical talent at Westglades is beyond amazing! We look forward to welcoming our incoming 6th Grade students and parents during Showcase Night on January 23rd, beginning at 6:30pm, in the Auditorium. As always, parents are encouraged to have an active voice at WMS by attending monthly SAC, SAF, and PTO meetings. Be sure to also follow us on Twitter at @WMSWolves and on Instagram at @WMS_Wolves for up-to-date information right to your mobile device. e are excited to return to school after the Winter Holidays! The start of a new semester seems to be a time for a renewal of the old and a look forward to the new. For all of us, it’s a time that we could reflect on what we did well in the previous semester and to make attempts to better ourselves for the second semester. I would like to encourage parents and students to discuss how their child is feeling. Some will feel stress, anxiety, or nervousness but it is important to know that there are resources available to help. Visit WestgladesMiddle.com for more details. In December, we invited Mike Donahue of Value Up to present at our school. Mike’s overall message is to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes before assuming the worst about them, that regardless of our circumstances, we all have intrinsic value. The feedback from both students and parents was very positive. The climate of our school has always been, and will continue to be, essential to the success in educating our children and preparing them for a life beyond its hallways. We are thankful that this initiative is adding to our positive climate.

Our faculty has been participating in many in-house and district trainings to stay abreast of current trends. Most of these trainings are spearheaded by our Literacy Coach, Audrey Fay. We are fully dedicated to increasing student achievement and producing college and career ready students. The State of Florida recognized Ramblewood Elementary as one of the Five Star School Award winners. To earn Five Star School recognition, a school must show that it has achieved all of the benchmarks and criteria in five categories – Community/ Business Partnerships, Family Involvement, Volunteerism, Student Community Service and School Advisory Council. Schools must also earn a grade of “C” or above or a school improvement rating of “Maintaining” or “Commendable” for the year being recognized. The administration continues to practice various monthly drills with the students and staff, as we keep safety and security a priority at our school. We also conducted a successful Code Black evacuation drill in December, with the assistance of the Coral Springs Police and our Special Investigative Unit. We have many events planned for the remainder of the year and can’t wait to share them with you!

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS

H

untington Learning Center continues its Academic Superstars program with the Sports and Activities Directory. The year is winding down and students are working harder than ever to reach their academic goals. Joe J. is one of our students who have been flying through his program, and really enjoying the perks of understanding and using the strategies he’s being taught. He’s been working incredibly hard, and loves to let us know of his achievements. For example, recently Joe brought in his take-home folder FILLED with school work marked with A’s and B’s. He was so proud of his work, and we were so happy for him. He is well on his way to academic success, both here at the Center, and at school. Abigail E. came to our center for help on her SSAT assessment to help her get into a private school. While attending our center, we focused on verbal and math skills and test-taking strategies to help her conquer the test. She took multiple practice tests, and we were able to adjust her program based on her test scores. Working one-on-one with her teachers, we were able to note gains in her ability. She recently got her test scores back, and we are proud of how she did. We expect to hear very soon about her acceptance into the school. Harley

When Harley starting coming to our center, we were focusing on both verbal and math skills and helping her feel more comfortable in her abilities. Recently, she also added in geometry tutoring. We are proud to report that Harley has received an “A” on her math test, and a big dose of confidence. Our main goal here at Huntington Learning Center is not only to help students reach academic success, but to also give them confidence in themselves and their abilities. All of the children who attend our center are capable, and we are proud that these families have chosen us to help them reach their full potential. TUTORING

The community and staff came out in full force to interact with the presenters. In December, the Ramblewood Middle School Band came to our school to perform holiday songs for our students and staff. We were elated to see many of our former students performing. Kudos to Mr. John Nista, the Band Director! He truly prepared the students to perform an amazing show. Our P.E. Teacher, Mr. Alvaro Picado, coordinated an exciting week of Field Day Events. The students had a great time competing! Thank you to the parent volunteers and PTO for making Field Day successful! Our Chorus performed festive holiday songs for the community. Thank you to our Music Teacher, Mrs. Theresa Morishita for preparing these student participants for the past three months.

hile being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of injury and death to children from 1 to 4 years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. PARENTS NEED TO TALK TO THEIR CHILD ABOUT WATER SAFETY. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO START WITH: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing to experience the sensation. REMEMBER WATER SAFETY • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments • Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level • Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water

ENVIRONMENTS • Do not deactivate alarms • If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances • Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use • Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm • Do not deactivate alarm • Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques • Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training • Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained • 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health (954) 759-7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy (954) 346-1774 • American Heart Association 1(800) 242-8721 • American Red Cross 1(800) RED-CROSS COMMUNITY EDUCATION Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central (954) 357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County (954) 467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, (954) 377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward: Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. O

ne goal. One voice. February 14, 2018 brought together 17 families who never wanted to become members of the club, families of gun violence victims. These families have bonded together to make a difference in the lives of other children, since their children and spouses no longer have a voice. While some of the 17 families have different focuses on how to change the status quo, this advocacy group, this forum, is the one place they all agree. Stand with Parkland – The National Association of Families for Safe Schools has one mission, keep children and staff safe in school. They work towards this goal with a three pronged approach. They want practical public safety reforms to secure the campus for the students and staff at school. Next, they want improved mental health support programs. Finally, they want responsible firearms ownership. The Stand With Parkland advocacy group, a not-for-profit organization, has an elected board of seven, yet every founding member family has a voice in the organization through the advisory council. Their hope is to have the entire country standing behind them helping to achieve their goal. Stand With Parkland – The National Association of Families for Safe Schools works with all political groups, in the hopes that they can find a point of agreement and change laws and policy to make schools safer. While they understand that they have been given a platform that most gun-violence affected communities have not received, they work with many groups to combine their efforts and take their voice to wherever they can affect the most change. The group realizes that the road ahead is long, with many uphill battles. They view each change as a small victory. They lobbied for the MSDHS Public Safety Act. They received much support for many of the items they requested, including raising the age to buy firearms,

By Robyne Friedland

more funding for mental health programs and funds to help secure schools. Many members of the group, united under the direction of Tony Montalto -President, Phil Schentrup - Secretary, and Tom Hoyer -Treasurer visit D.C. often. They explain their plans and need for change, they voice their concern for non-action and they listen. They truly listen. This group wants to encourage everyone to work together towards the common goal of safety in the schools. The work has been hard and sometimes frustrating, but just this week, at the direction of the President, the federal government prohibited the sale or ownership of bump stocks. While the group is united in their ultimate goal, they each work on separate portions of the plan to get as much accomplished as possible. Letters need to be written, meetings need to be attended, discussions need to be had and press releases need to be sent. This takes lots of time as well as money. The advocacy group needs help to keep up the good fight. They hope that you will donate to their cause and become a member of their group, numbers make a difference to the politicians. Stand With Parkland – The National Association of Families for Safe Schools would prefer to have each person in America donate $10 than have one person donating $1,000,000. Non-partisan, grassroots support from all over our nation would be the most effective way to help the push for change. With each new member learning about the goals of their group, that is one more person helping to achieve school safety for all. Please visit their website: Standwithparkland.org or visit their Facebook page @ standwithparkland. This group of 17 families never wanted to be the ones to start this group in memory of their loved ones, but now that they have, they want you to join their organization for the sake of your family. Simply put, America’s children should be able to attend school without fear.
