Dear Readers,

As the temperatures rise and the sun sets later, we realize we are approaching the end of the school year and getting ready for summer. There are so many camp options to explore for your children and we encourage you to look at our camp section to make the choice that is best for your family. There are a variety of camps ranging from academic to sports, theater to art and everything in between. Please also look into Camp Shine, especially MSD students, to learn about storytelling through a variety of art forms. So don’t delay and sign up for a fabulous camp today. While summer is a bit lighter on the events offered, there are still so many opportunities to be entertained. There are many events taking place at the Iceden, including an awesome end of school bash, plus open skating throughout the summer. The Fishing Derby will take place at the Pine Trails Park fishing pier, the race for the biggest fish. July 4th is a great time to celebrate with the family. Come to Mullins Park for great music, lots of fireworks and tons of fun. Please look through the events section and find out when the Marlins have a home game, see a show at the Broward Center, make crafts at the library or partake in a Kid’s Night Out. There is so much to do around town, both inside and outdoors. As the school year winds down, we would like to thank all the teachers, volunteers, principals and staff for creating a wonderful, safe and educational environment for our students. Your hard work is truly appreciated. We want to congratulate all of our All-Star students who made academic, service, musical, theatrical and athletic gains this year. We are so proud of all your achievements and can’t wait to see what you do next. Registration for the fall leagues will be taking place very soon. The Parkland Softball league is winding down its first return season and is already planning for the fall. Check out when to register for this sport and more inside this issue. Our community is strong, but many are still in pain and working through their emotions. Please look to visit the Eagles’ Haven for help. This place is a true haven for restoring health and wellness, both physically and mentally and is available for individuals or families. There are so many avenues for our community to receive the help and support they need, please look through our directory to find what will work for you. Take time this summer to spend time with your loved ones whether on vacation or staycation, barbeques or beach days, just enjoy being together and making memories. We hope you take time to rest, relax and discover the towns and all they have to offer. We appreciate all our readers and we want to include items that are important to you. Please send in pictures, stories and ideas so the directory reflects your interests. Happy summer!

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Readers,

8

Congratulations to all the high school and college students who will be graduating in May and June! I am always so impressed with our students’ accomplishments and wish them much success on their journey. As a parent, it is so hard to believe how quickly the years pass. There is much truth to the expression the days are long, but the years are short. May we all enjoy the moments we have with our children and appreciate them for who they are every step of the way. May and June are a time when we celebrate mothers and fathers. Mothers and fathers are the ones who we go to for support, help, advice, consoling and even a delicious meal. They are often the helpers, the coaches, the mentors and the first ones to reach out to help a friend and neighbor. Our world is a better place thanks to the love, care and support mothers and fathers show their families and the assistance and volunteer hours they give to our communities. Thank you to all the mothers and fathers for all you do day in and day out to help your families and community. Unfortunately Mother’s Day and Father’s Day can also be a very difficult day and a sad reminder for those who have lost their mothers or fathers and for mothers and fathers who have lost children. So while you celebrate your mother and father, please show compassion and understanding for those who may be having a difficult time on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. May is Mental Health month and our community has continued to focus on letting people know about the importance of mental health, self-care and healing and the various resources that are available. One fixture that has been part of the healing process for many has been the Temple of Time by artist, David Best. This was the first of the Healing Through Art projects funded by the Bloomberg Public Art Challenge. Thousands have visited the project since February and wrote on the temple about their sorrows, concerns and pain. The project culminates with a burning to release all the inscribed feelings, pain and grief. The burning is scheduled to take place on May 19 at 7:00pm. Please note that Sample Road will be closed for this event and schedule your plans accordingly. We hope to see you there as we release the Temple of Time and all the burdens and grief it carries. In the summer months there is less structure and scheduling for students and it is important that we remain engaged with our children and monitor how they are doing. Eagles’ Haven is open throughout the summer and information about activities there can be found at www.eagleshaven.org. Additionally we have several activities that can be found on our website at www.cityofparkland. org. On Wednesday, June 26, at 3:30pm, the Parkland Library is hosting a presentation called “Cultivating Creative Emotional Intelligence” for adults and teens. Speaker Andres Diaz will discuss the program he created that saved his life through understanding the creative power of feelings. He is the author of “My Worst Days are the Best!” and is a father, former sergeant of the U.S. Marines, founder of Creative Emotional Intelligence and a music producer who has produced for Grammy Award-winning artists. He guides people toward emotional self-creation as a way to overcome depression, PTSD, anxiety, suicide ideation and survivor’s guilt, which is something he dealt with after losing eight of his friends in the war when he was a U.S. Marine. Hopefully you can join is for this presentation. With the July 4 holiday it is important to remind everyone that it is illegal for consumers (non-professionals) to discharge fireworks in the State of Florida. Additionally, for those dealing with PTSD, the sound of fireworks can be a trigger. Please be mindful of the laws and your fellow neighbors. For those struggling with PTSD, please make sure you are prepared with a plan to cope with the fireworks. I am hosting open office hours on Tuesday, May 7 from 7:30am-9am at Parkland City Hall. Please feel free to stop by, say hello and ask me any questions you may have. No appointment is necessary. If you are unable to stop by during my open office hours, please feel free to reach out to me at any time at chunschofsky@ cityofparkland.org. I always look forward to hearing from residents. Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

Dear Readers,

10

Since I was officially sworn in as the City’s Mayor on March 20, 2019, I have been reacclimating to public service and enjoying meeting with residents and business owners. I am happy to be your New (Old) Mayor! On April 4, 2019, the Coral Springs City Commission held the final hearing to allow Medical Marijuana dispensaries to conduct business within our city’s boundaries. In a second 4-1 vote, in which I was in favor, we approved moving forward to amend that ordinance. As with all city issues, it is important for residents to get involved and stay informed. City Commission meetings are open to the public and can be viewed on City TV or online at coralsprings.org. I also urge you to join a Board or Committee to get involved! The link is: https://www.coralsprings.org/ government/city-clerk/board-and-committee-application During the conclusion of that same Commission Meeting, we paused to honor the years of service and leadership Commissioner Dan Daley has given our city and its residents. Daley vacated Commission Seat 2, effective April 9, 2019, when he ran unopposed for the District 97 Seat for the Florida House of Representatives. We congratulate him on his new position, and I look forward to working with him on a state-level. Daley’s departure resulted in vacancy for Commission Seat 2. Consequently, we will hold a Special Election in Coral Springs on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. It is the civic duty of every Coral Springs resident who is eligible to vote, to cast their ballot for Commission Seat 2! If you are unable to vote in person, on that date, because of pre-planned travel or prior commitments, remember to request a mail-in ballot from the Broward Supervisor of Elections online at browardsoe. org. YOUR VOTE MATTERS! As many of you are aware, last month the city hosted a Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Town Hall Meeting at City Hall. The goal was to inform residents about resources and answer questions related to mental health. I appreciate all of the residents who attended in person and online. You will often here me say, “eliminate the stigma,” and that is something we as a community must do. We need to make mental health and wellness a priority, and openly talk about the need for therapy. There are many resources available for families, they are listed on our website at coralsprings.org/msd. Please go to the site and share this link with others. On Sunday, May 19, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. the City of Coral Springs, in partnership with the City of Parkland, will ceremoniously burn the Temple of Time. The first of the five public art installations, The Temple of Time, was constructed by world-renowned artist, David Best, and hundreds of Coral Springs and Parkland residents. It officially opened on February 14, 2019. The temporary, 35-foot wooden structure, remains open for visitors until the ceremonial fire on the 19th. The burn will be carefully coordinated by the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department and Coral Springs Police Department. As with all temples created by Best, it is a place to reflect and leave behind difficult feelings and emotions. Traditionally, the temples are burned within two weeks, but The Temple of Time has remained open for three months to allow as many visitors as possible. All parking for the event will be at City Hall (9500 West Sample Road). To learn more about the Power of Art, visit poweroa.org. If you would like to schedule an appointment to speak with me, please call (954) 344-5906, or if you have an issue you would like to bring to my attention, email me at Sbrook@coralsprings.org. Please also free to call me on my cell phone at 954-696-7599. Have a Great Day! Your Friendly Mayor, Scott J. Brook

T

he City of Coral Springs has long been known for its expansive parks, events and activities, but did you know it is also a destination for world-class aquatics training and competitions? The warm South Florida weather, recently renovated 50-meter pool and expansive fitness center, make Coral Springs a desirable location for Olympic athletes, collegiate competitors and performers to train. Water-based sports colleges with teams who call Coral Springs home in the winter months include: the University of Michigan, Princeton, Norte Dame, multiple state Universities from New York and Royal Caribbean’s world-class entertainers. Most local aquatic centers accommodate teams consisting of 30-35 athletes, the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex exceeds that number, accommodating up to 50. With such a demand for use of the city’s complex due to its size and scope, it often requires staff to operate the facility for training 7-days a week, from 6 am to 10 pm during much of the winter. In January, the complex hosted the Union Americana De Natacion (UANA) Cup, featuring 35 teams from Central America, South America and the Caribbean. This was the first time since the 1940’s the UANA held a competition in the U.S. Competitions and training generate tourism, which fuels the local economy, from restaurants, hotels, transportation and other business revenue. Of the interest in the Coral Springs Aquatics Complex, Parks & Recreation Administrator, Jason Walsh, says, “We offer a one-stop location for dive and swim training, as well as national and international competitions. This is thanks in part to our multi-tiered dive towers, Olympicsize and 50-meter pools, new dive blocks, state-of-the-art fitness center and complete swim shop.” With the generated interest in the Coral Springs Aquatics Complex, the city expects to bid for larger events in the future. The complex welcomes more than 600,000 guests each year. In addition to swimming and diving, the complex hosts water polo and synchronized swimming competitions and training. There are public and club memberships available, to learn more, visit aquaticcomplex@ coralsprings.org or call (954) 345-2121.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION TO INSPIRE

HOPE AND UNITY IN THE AFTERMATH OF TRAGEDY

I

t is during our darkest moments that we shine the light. Following the tragic mass shooting that took place at Stoneman Douglas High School, the world came to know the students of this high school were a bit different. Some jumped to action in the political arena. Others turned their efforts toward the arts. Many from both sides had significant roots in the drama department at Stoneman Douglas High School. Two of those drama students, Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Peña, channeled their pain and anger into writing an original song called Shine days after the tragedy. What started as a personal healing journey quickly grew into an anthem met with an overwhelming response from people all over the world. Shine MSD, Inc., an IRS registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was born to provide creative arts therapy programs for trauma victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School community. We anticipate the healing and mental health needs in the Parkland / Coral Springs community to be a continuous, ongoing effort with the potential to expand the scope of our work to other individuals and communities in need around the world. Words are often hard to come by for teenagers faced with tragedy. Even adults carry the burden of being unable to express emotional issues that life presents. No one is ready to deal with the traumatic stress of an unspeakable event. Yet, there has always been an outlet for deep rooted emotions. Art has been a medium to better understand the victims’ struggles and articulate how they feel about the issues impacting their lives. There is evidence that engagement with artistic activities, either as an observer or one’s own creative efforts, can

enhance one’s moods, emotions, and have a salient impact on important psychological parameters. We all engage in these healing efforts even on a subconscious level. It can be as simple as hearing a favorite song when we are feeling down. The story of how Shine was created is a perfect example of healing through the arts. Two drama students shared text messages shortly after February 14, 2018. Sawyer Garrity texted Andrea Peña: “We should write a song together.” Then 10 minutes later Andrea texted back “So I was thinking this for the piano.” A few minutes later, Sawyer sent Andrea the first verse of what would become the anthem of Shine: “You, you threw my city away.” The process of writing the song was cathartic for them. They had no real plans for the song. They just hoped that a few students and faculty members would hear it and find comfort. The song did exactly what the girls had hoped for, but for many more people than they could have imagined. Shine MSD provides music and art programs to provide healing to those affected by this tragedy including: • Camp Shine, a free summer camp for high school victims involving three modalities of creative arts: drama; music; and art; • Workshops in the fine arts providing an outlet for survivors to create works of art and sponsoring showings of the creations; • Workshops on song writing and learning to play instruments, and hosting coffee house style performances; and • Workshops on film making as artistic expression and documenting the artistic and healing efforts of our community as an example of how these efforts work.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15 from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE

Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

et’s play ball. When Brian and Meena’s daughter started to play softball they needed to find a league in another city because Parkland did not have one. While their daughter enjoyed the league, her parents decided that she should be able to play in her hometown. This year, Brian and Meena Hierholzer brought back softball to Parkland. There are 9 teams and the ages range from 5-12 years old. There are 2 t-ball teams, 3 coach pitch teams, 3 kid pitch teams and one tournament team. The first season has been going great and is bigger than expected. The season is going great and everyone is so happy with the return of Parkland softball. The goals for the girls, is for them to learn softball skills,

Alexis Deveaux is also the starting goalie on the Bahamas U16 Girls National Soccer Team and currently plays competitive travel soccer with Wellington Wave. For the 2018 / 2019 high school season, this freshman goalkeeper’s stats were phenomenal and demonstrated high caliber performance. Her performance resulted in 16 shutouts, 19 wins, 4 ties and 2 losses. Her goals against average of .80 were very impressive. In a Sun Sentinel article published in March 2019, Deveaux was named ALL County 2nd Team. To make this freshman’s soccer accolades even more impressive, in April 2019, Miami Herald named her ALL County 1st Team. As a full time athlete, Deveaux still manages to maintain over a 3.20 GPA. Her mother, Corlette Deveaux states that she is “very proud of her daughter and I support her in her goal to be the best person, student and goalkeeper she can be”. In her down time, Deveaux is involved in her community as a volunteer at Parkland Recreation and Enrichment Center and Parkland Basketball Buddies. She also volunteers at A Joyful Heart Adult Day Care. As the country and world speaks about Parkland, Florida we pray that they speak of the beautiful city, the many advantages and the promising talent that live there.

arkland is a beautiful and diverse community of approximately 25,000 and is the home of many families who enjoy its tranquility, amenities and the many advantages of an affluent Florida lifestyle. Parkland also boosts one of the best choices for families, the best public school system in the country, and one of the safest cities in Florida. Many talented and gifted people live in this community. We want to take this opportunity to highlight a promising young Parkland resident. Alexis Deveaux is a 2018 graduate of Westglades Middle School and an upcoming and a highly promising soccer goalie. Representing Westglades Middle School in 2018, she was the Regional Champion for Discus and recognized as an athletic scholar. Deveaux is currently a freshman and the starting goalkeeper on her high school varsity team. Deveaux made an immediate impact and was instrumental in helping her school, Cardinal Gibbons High School make it to the State championship; the first time in 10 years and the 2nd time in the school’s history. Her team lost in the state finals however, Miami Herald mentioned Deveaux’s stellar performance in the post-game article indicating that “If it hadn’t been for Deveaux, the score might’ve been much worse as she made more than a dozen saves, half a dozen of them filed into the “big-time” category”.

A Difficult Topic for all:

R

TALKING TO OUR CHILDREN ABOUT SELF HARM

aising children is a marathon. They bring us pride, joy and many moments of laughter. There are also many hills to climb, and often the downhill jog turns into a challenge to stay on your feet. We are often focused on what school they should attend, who their friends are and what sports or extracurriculars they get involved in. There are also issues that can surface that we hope we never have to face. It is not often, but there are times when we are asked to help individuals who make statements of self harm. There are a few key elements that should always be followed to make sure our family or friends are safe. If a situation arises in which self harm statements are made, start by calming the situation as much as possible and reach out for help. Stay with your child and try to get them to talk or engage in an activity that will keep them busy until you can get to a doctor, mental health professional or call 911or 211 (first calls for help) or the suicide prevention lifeline (800) 273-8255. I was recently asked how to handle a similar situation where the emotion is high (a meltdown) but the child is not in harms way. My response is similar. The first step would be to calm things down. Avoid punishment and focus on providing supportive statements. Revisit it later that day (or the next if necessary) and then problem solve the situation, including how to handle something similar that may come in the future and any punishments that may be necessary to implement. I like giving each child a “free pass”, but it is an individual choice and ultimately your choice on how you want to parent. Recent studies have revealed that the number of children and teens in the United States that have visited Emergency rooms for suicidal thoughts over an 8 year period ending in 2015 has doubled. During the same period of time it is estimated that 59% of children report that they have experienced cyberbullying. The important part to take away from this is that there are ways of helping our children prior to needing an ER visit. In an attempt to offer more assistance I asked the other members in the office to share some thoughts that may be helpful should you find yourself in a difficult situation. Dr. Heather Bossong, Psy.D. - This is from an article on Validation that I give parents about validating their child’s current situation and emotions: “One of the four options we have in any problem situation is acceptance. Validation is one way that we communicate acceptance of ourselves and others. Validation doesn’t mean agreeing or approving. When your best friend or a family member makes a decision that you really don’t think is wise, validation is a way of supporting them and strengthening the relationship while maintaining a different

By Dr. David Yudell & Associates

opinion. Validation is a way of communicating that the relationship is important and solid even when you disagree on issues. Validation is the recognition and acceptance of another person’s thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviors as understandable.” Dr. Katrina Macias, Psy.D. - Do not be afraid to ask your loved ones if they are having thoughts of suicide. Asking about suicidal ideation does not “plant the idea in someone’s mind” or increase its likelihood in an individual; instead, it conveys to them that they are allowed to share about these personal struggles, which allows for proper support and treatment to be implemented. Dr. Pamela Baker, Psy.D. - Depression can be a truly isolating experience for any individual, one that might result in feelings of self-blame, guilt, and shame. While there are no magic words to immediately reduce pain and suffering in your child, your physical and emotional presence are crucial. Active and reflective listening, as well as non-verbal cues such as a gentle touch (if this is something with which your child is usually comfortable), eye contact, a calm tone, leaning in to his/her words, and even just sitting beside them in silence, can all be incredibly effective in helping to put a vulnerable child at ease. Keep your initial statements simple, but reassuring, “You are not alone in this”, “We will do whatever we need to do to get you through this,” “You are so very loved.” Dr. Dovid Kirzner, Psy.D. - “By providing our children and loved ones with a scheduled weekly time slot to express their joys, sorrows, triumphs, and angst in a safe and nonjudgmental environment we may actually be saving their lives. This weekly meeting may be held within the comfort of one’s living room, bedroom, or even around the dinner table.” Dr. Myriam Padron, Psy.D. - Although suicide is seen as a taboo topic to discuss, it is important to provide your child/teen with a safe place to verbalize their thoughts regarding the issue (whether it be within the family or in therapy), especially if they have endorsed suicidal ideation in the past. Creating a safety plan as a family together may be helpful if your child/teen is open to the idea. Pam Wachtel, LMFT - I encourage all parents to check in regularly with their children and teenagers. Open and honest communication is very important when dealing with difficult topics such as suicide. Beth Alhanti, LMHC - Kids and adults have dealt - or not dealt - with the events of February differently. Some have chosen activism - trying to fight for or against causes they felt might have contributed to the tragedy. Many of them have not slowed down enough to deal with their own grief and guilt. We cannot forget them, as we analyze who might be experiencing deep, internal conflict and pain.

We want to wish our 5th grade students all the best as they go off to middle school. Have a wonderful summer! See you in August!

t’s hard to believe it is May and the summer is right around the corner. Over the past few months Westglades’ students participated in so many activities, had so many accomplishments and continued to spread the spirit of service in love. I am so proud of our Science Club, Math Team, Debate and Speech Team, and Junior Thespians for bringing awards and accolades back to Westglades in February, March, and April. Our Spanish Competition Team and Spoken Word Team also won awards and many of our ELA students participated in the Broward County Schools District Literary Fair. I am very eager to see how they did. Our Beginning Band students performed their third concert of the school year. While our Concert and Symphonic Bands performed and excelled at the Music Performance Assessment. It is such a pleasure to see how much they have grown musically this year! Our clubs and organizations continue to thrive. In March, our Best Buddies Club Celebrated “Don’t Dis’ My Ability” Awareness Week. Each day they brought awareness to a different type of disability. The National Junior Honor Society sponsored, “No One Eats Alone,” during that week, with a goal to end social

isolation. Their organized activities during lunch helped to reinforce our goal of making sure all students feel included at Westglades. At the end of April, our dedicated Student Government Association hosted their Annual 5K Race. This was the 10th year for this initiative: Building a Community of Runners. The race held at Pine Trails Park, in Parkland, was an event for everyone! Students, teachers, police officers, and even city and county commissioners came out to support this amazing cause. If you missed it this year, I encourage you to attend next year. As the schoolyear comes to a close, I would like to remind parents to talk to their children about how they feel. Some will feel stress, anxiety, or nervousness but, it is important to know that there are multiple resources available locally to help. Visit WestgladesMiddle.com for more details. Lastly, be sure to visit our website often for school news and updates. Also follow us on Twitter at @WMSWolves and on Instagram at @WMS_Wolves for up-to-date information right to your mobile device. -Matthew Bianchi

t has been another terrific year at Westchester Elementary thanks to our staff, students and parents working together. Some of the highlights of the year were Field Days, Valentine’s Dance, Multi-Cultural Night, STEAM Night, and Night of the Arts, just to name a few. The inaugural Westchester Speech & Debate Team brought home two trophies from the Elementary School Debate Tournament held in Broward County! Categories were Impromptu and Interpretation! Our team learns new skills with each passing tournament to help them perfect their craft! As of now our teachers and students are focusing their energy on completing the FSA. The students and teachers have been working hard all year and they are well prepared for the test.

O

n April 2nd and 3rd, the third through fifth grade students at Forest Hills began taking the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). Our teachers have worked diligently throughout the year to ensure all students were thoroughly prepared. At the beginning of May, students will continue with the remainder of their FSA Assessments. We wish them well! This month, we have a few events taking place around our campus. The fun events include our P.T.O. sponsored Muffins with Moms (April 18), and Family Fun Science Night (April 24). During the month of May we always look forward to our annual Mother’s Day Cake Decorating event

Westchester will be hosting Summer Camp again. Our theme this year is: “Showcase of the Arts” It will be a summer full of rich academic activities, Sports, Arts & Crafts, Technology, Color Wars, Field Trips around Broward, and so much more!

For specific details relating to these events or any other question relating to Forest Hills Elementary, please call our front office at (754) 322-6400. Last but not least, all year Forest Hills has been highlighting random acts of kindness. As we are in the home stretch of the 20182019 schoolyear we encourage everyone to help each other, take care of one another, and make a concerted effort to put a smile on someone’s face. Thanks for all you do for children of Coral Springs and Parkland. Take care and have a great summer!

SCHOOLS rom warmups to memorizing speeches to arguing topics, debate at Forest Glen is a chaotic but great learning experience. In Speech and Debate students learn how to speak confidently in front of a crowd; a skill that is helpful in all of their classes, not just debate. Over the four years that this program has been at Forest Glen, students have been able to explore numerous events in a controlled environment. Activities that go on inside the classroom consist of note taking, writing speeches, performing speeches and scenes, and debating. The debate classroom is not your traditional classroom, students are constantly getting up and debating, watching movie clips to help them understand how different events work, and even viewing documentaries so they can debate the issues presented in them. This elective course also gives

students the opportunity to earn a high school honors credit while they are still in middle school. Forest Glen Debate competes in monthly debate competitions. At these tournaments, all the middle schools in Broward County come together with their students to compete in speech and debate events including: Declamation, Impromptu Speaking, Humorous & Dramatic Interpretation, Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and many more. Competitions are chaotic but so much fun. We are so proud of our Debate students who have competed and brought home several medals, trophies, and plaques as a result of their top-notch performances. We look forward to another great year of competition in the 2019-2020 schoolyear!

We have been extremely busy the past few months as our PTO kept the community entertained. During the month of January, the community was invited to Pasquale’s and Cold Stone for a joint family night. In February, the Multicultural Showcase was standing room only. Students brought flags that represent their countries and danced to cultural music. Vendors donated delicious foods from various ethnic backgrounds. In March, the community came out to purchase books for their children during our Spring Scholastic Book Fair. We also celebrated Dr. Seuss Week

WE want to thank all of our volunteers, students, teachers and staff for another successful schoolyear. While our students are enjoying a well-deserved summer break, the staff at Park Trails will be hard at work getting the school prepared for the next schoolyear. We will be renovating the entire interior of the school with a fresh coat of paint, beautiful mural and other aesthetic enhancements. We will also be upgrading our lighting and safety features to ensure all are safe on campus. This summer, Park Trails will be hosting the P-Rec summer camp program. There will be so many activities for your children to enjoy and they will come home happy and exhausted from a great day at camp. Parents can register their children through the P-rec website.

in March. Students were excited to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. Our 5th graders traveled to Orlando to enjoy the day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. At the end of April, a Family Olympic was planned! Bounce houses, games and food vendors were scheduled to be on campus to enhance the entertainment! We continue to educate our students with appropriate, rigorous instruction to increase their achievements as they prepare to take the Florida Standards Assessment tests. The teachers attended many training workshops this year to properly instruct our students. Our Support Staff continue to closely monitor every student’s educational need. Together, we strive towards success and remain RAM Strong!

At Park Trails we are always striving to introduce our students to new and innovative curriculum. Next year we will be expanding our specials program to be offering Robotics and Engineering. Student in all grades will be engaging in coding, building and programing robots and 3-D computer design all in an effort to help prepare our students for 21 Century jobs. We are also aware how important learning a new language can be to keep up in today’s workforce. We will also be offering Spanish as one of our many after school programs next year. It is sure to be another exciting year at Park Trails so stay tuned for more about Back to School events and necessary information for school preparedness. We wish our Park Trails family a wonderful summer and wish our 5th graders the best of luck in middle school!

ost likely you already know or have heard that STEM is an acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.” The idea behind STEM is to encourage the United States to be more competitive in technology development by creating generations of students who can excel in high-tech jobs (some like to call this generation, “STEMists.”) STEM education is an interdisciplinary and applied approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons. Students use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise. STEM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for all students as young as they start asking why. Therefore, the experiences children have during the early years are essential. As your child’s first teacher, your role is vital in creating opportunities that promote learning in a fun and safe environment. You can help introduce essential STEM skills by teaching your children to: ask questions, work together, think creatively, solve problems, explore and take calculated risks, test solutions
