Dear Readers,

Welcome to a new school year and all the excitement that comes with it. I hope everyone enjoyed a fun filled summer and was able to spend quality time with family and friends. Now it’s time to shift our attention back to education; in this issue you will find great information to help you prepare for the school year ahead. Included is the official Broward County 2019–2020 colored school calendar, all of the Coral Springs and Parkland schools contact information, hours, and their corresponding FSA scores. We are excited to congratulate all of our schools that showed improvements. This could not have been possible without our dedicated educators, support staff, parents and, of course, our amazing children. Our community has so many diverse activities to offer residents throughout the year. Soon after the kids head back to school. On Friday, August 30th, there is a “Back to School Bash” with a Live DJ and Ice Skating. Back to School “Splash Bash” at Pine Trails Park will be held on Saturday, September 14th from10:00AM – 1:00PM. We will feature fun in the sun with many water themed activities, inflatables, slip and slides, music, games, crafts, and more! Admission is free, bathing suits are required, and all ages are welcome. “Bites and Sips” returns to downtown Coral Springs on August 31st. The P-Rec also offers many after school and days off programs. In this jam-packed issue, you will find an array of helpful advice on what to do with your kids for after school programs. Check out our extensive section on after school programs. We have partners who do everything from driving your children to activities, to providing educational and musical programs, sports or whatever your child may be into. It won’t be difficult to find a good balance between studying, sports and extracurricular activities, which will help teach time management and leadership skills. Plus, it will help your child develop a solid work ethic. For parents that are looking to volunteer there are many opportunities, we encourage all parents to join their PTA or PTO. This helps keep you involved with what’s going on in your child’s school and have your voice heard. Finally, special congratulations to the entire team at the Sports & Activities Directory for winning the 2019 Small Business Leader of the Year award. We want to thank our city leaders, readers, sponsors and the entire team for which it could not be possible. We are so proud to be going into our 17th year of publishing this valuable, community-based, premier one-stop source for unparalleled information on local events, community programs, sports and activities. As always, please feel free to send me any stories, suggestions or pictures that highlight our unique community to cspdirectory1@gmail.com. I wish you and your children a successful and prosperous school year ahead!

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Readers,

8

It is hard to believe how quickly the summer has flown by, especially with Broward County Public Schools starting early this year on August 14. Many people have made comments to me that they are not happy with such an early start to the school year. If you have input on the school calendar for the 2020/2021 school year, please contact your School Board Member early this school year to find out how you can provide comments and suggestions for next year’s calendar. Toward the end of August, all homeowners in Broward County should receive their Truth In Millage (TRIM) notice from the Broward County Property Appraiser. This notice can also be found online at www.bcpa.net. On the TRIM notice, each homeowner can review the proposed millage rate of each taxing entity (Broward County, Broward County Public Schools, South Florida Water Management District, North Broward Hospital, Children’s Services Council, City of Parkland, etc.). Additionally, the TRIM notice lists the meeting dates and times that each entity will vote on those proposed rates, so taxpayers may attend. It is important for each homeowner to review their TRIM notice to see which entities are receiving their tax dollars. After months of strategic planning that included commission workshops, resident surveys and focus groups, the City of Parkland City Commission gave staff direction regarding priorities for the 2019/2020 fiscal year and beyond. Based on these priorities, staff presented the Commission with a proposed 2019/2020 budget, which kept the millage rate and fire assessment fee the same as last year. You can see the City of Parkland proposed budget online now on the city website at www.cityofparkland.org/budget. Please take the time to review the proposed budget and give us your feedback in the online comments section. Additionally, there will be a resident budget workshop on August 8 from 6pm–8pm and budget hearings on September 12 at 7pm and September 25 at 6pm at Parkland City Hall. We look forward to hearing from you. As we head into the fall season, we have so many wonderful events going on in Parkland such as Parkland Night Out on 8/5, the Back to School Splash Bash on 9/14 and the Parkland Dash on 10/13. The best way to keep up to date on all events in our city is to visit our calendar on the city website, follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/copfl and Twitter at @CityParklandFL, subscribe to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notifyme and download the MyParkland app. As always, I love hearing from our residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

Dear Readers,

10

I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. It’s hard to believe the 2019/2020 school year begins in just a few weeks. As the kids return to school, I can assure you that the safety of our children and the quality of education they receive, remains mine and that of my fellow Commissioners number one priority. Speaking of our schools, I want to congratulate our “A” rated schools – Country Hills Elementary, Eagle Ridge Elementary, Imagine Schools at Broward and Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) all maintained their “A” ratings. I could not be prouder of the fact that the City-operated school – the Coral Springs Charter School received an “A” rating for the 16th consecutive year. For our MSD Eagles community, I remind you that the Eagles’ Haven Community Wellness Center remains open seven-days-a-week through the remainder of the summer, with hours Monday – Friday 9 am –7 pm and weekends, 10 am to 4 pm. There is so much to do and experience, and most importantly, it’s free! Check out their website eagleshaven.org for class offerings and schedules. I want to remind Coral Springs homeowners to be on the lookout for their Proposed Property Taxes Notice (TRIM) in the mail starting the second week of August. These notices are mailed directly from the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office. I encourage residents to take an active role in our City’s budget process by attending the hearings or watching live online at cscitytv.org. The Coral Springs Commission will hold our first public budget hearing on September 12th at 5:15 pm and second hearing on September 18th at 6:30 pm in Commission Chambers at City Hall. Our popular food truck event, Bites & Sips, returns to City Hall on Saturday, August 31 from 6 pm – 10 pm. In addition to the most popular food trucks in South Florida, the event will feature live entertainment and fun for the whole family. There is plenty of free parking in the City Hall garage, so just bring a lawn chair and an appetite. Our City remains committed to honoring the victims who lost their lives during the September 11th attack on our nation, by annually hosting the Coral Springs 5K Remembrance Run. This family-friendly run is scheduled for September 7th and participants are encouraged to register as part of a team. To learn more about the 5K and our other City events, visit coralsprings.org/events. I enjoy meeting with residents while attending events and activities in the City, but if you have an issue or concern you would like to sit down to discuss, make an appointment by calling (954) 344-5906 or email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org. Please free to contact me on my cell phone at (954) 696-7599. Thank you for your interest in our City. Your Friendly Mayor,

Scott J. Brook

T

he rustle of the trees, the chirp of the birds, the peaceful quiet of nature, and the laughter of the girls….those are just some of the wonderful sounds you could hear at Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida’s Camp Telogia. This 10-acre property located in Parkland was deeded by Broward County to the local Girl Scout council in the 1950s and serves as perfect green space to get girls outside. Outdoor experiences in Girl Scouts provide opportunities for girls to discover, connect, and take action out-of-doors in ways that build courage, confidence, and character. These experiences increase girls’ understanding and curiosity about the natural world, and shape girl leaders who are conscientious regarding the world around them. Findings from the Girl Scout Research Institute show that outdoor exposure is extremely beneficial to girls and that they enjoy the outdoor experiences they have in Girl Scouts. Girls learn environmental stewardship through outdoor activities and are twice as likely as non–Girl Scouts to say they take action to protect the environment (51% versus 23%). “Additionally, the research shows that outdoor activity supports girl leadership development,” said Lisa Johnson, GSSEF Chief Executive Officer. “Camp Telogia provides the perfect venue to support a wellrounded Girl Scout experience.”

Being outdoors with Girl Scouts can transform a girl’s understanding of and appreciation for nature, while helping her build skills and boost her confidence. Together in a natural setting, girls find the courage within themselves to meet new people, make friends and bond. As they make choices and direct projects, girls learn to work well with others, become self-reliant, and develop their leadership skills. Over the last 18 months, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida has seen a revitalization of the outdoor program experience being offered as part of the learning opportunities for girls. These types of outdoor-related programs for girls are selling out and Girl Scout volunteers are rededicating their time and efforts to supporting the girls’ outdoor interests. Because of this, GSSEF is undertaking a revitalization project at Camp Telogia that will transform the current space and feature program pavilions, a fire pit gathering spot for the famous Girl Scout invented s’mores and plenty of green space for exploring and learning. “Re-establishing our presence at Camp Telogia will allow us to offer even more outdoor opportunities for our Girl Scouts into the future,” added Johnson. “It will provide a fun, engaging outdoor experience, which is one of the great things Girl Scouts offer girls.” To learn more and get involved, visit www.gssef.org.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE

Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading with Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

TEEN PROGRAMS STRONGER GIRLS TOGETHER This class offer weekly gatherings that empower girls with hands-on experiences including art, yoga, nature, conversations and community service projects. NAVIGATING YOUR CHILD’S TECHNOLOGY USE

By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

A

s technology continues to become increasingly intertwined in our daily lives, parents are presented with the challenging task of familiarizing themselves with the evolving industry and managing their family’s interactions with it. Here are some tips for navigating. • Familiarize yourself with your child’s individual technology use. Parents should seek to fully understand the types of activities their children engage in on their devices. For example, is your child gravitating toward social gaming (e.g., E-sports games with video or voice conversation) and using FaceTime with loved ones or are they mostly engaging in solitary online scrolling? Making this distinction is important in understanding the potential impact of their unique technology use. • Do your research before making decisions about technology. Given the potential hazards that accompany child technology use, it is understandable that many parents are apprehensive in this area. However, it is important to fully understand all relevant advantages and disadvantages before making decisions around your family’s technology use. Consider the following points: - A common concern among parents is decreased physical activity due to increased technology use. Several games such as “Just Dance” and “Pokémon Go” require physical activity or outdoor exploration to play, which presents a unique opportunity for parents to become involved in their child’s technology interests while being active together. - In a previous article we shared that several studies have found links between social media use and increased depression, anxiety, body image issues, and relationship problems, while other studies have identified positive effects of social media use, such as increased social support. Therefore, researching the types of social media accounts your child follows is important in deciding whether their behavior should be continued or curtailed. - Many computer programs and games provide opportunities for creativity, handeye-coordination skills, reinforcement of academics, and experience relevant to promising modern career fields.

Establish technology boundaries and safety rules collaboratively. By inviting children to explore and provide their “expertise” about safety matters and the pros and cons of screen time, parents can facilitate their self-awareness and independent decisionmaking skills in this area as well as increase their likelihood of compliance with said rules. Because there is no one-size-fits-all rule for determining an appropriate amount of screen time for every family, use information gathered from the previous tips to determine the best balance for yours. Also, be sure to take advantage of the many applications designed to enhance parent monitoring and regulation of children’s devices. IF boundaries are broken, create a dialogue to address and then deal with the circumstances surrounding the transgression. It is not advisable to immediately punish, however consequences, contracts and assisting professional help through a trained therapist are some of the measures that can be implemented. • Schedule a variety of activities. If left to their own devices (no pun intended) children will often choose the most easily accessible and immediately gratifying activities, such as phone and video games. It is the responsibility of parents to become involved in their child’s schedule enough to ensure their engagement with a variety of activities. By designating time for indoor, outdoor, individual, and social activities, you are able to convey the importance of balance to your child and also increase opportunities for family and peer bonding time. • Model the way you want your children to use technology. “Do as I say and not as I do” does not apply to this area of parenting. It is crucial for parents to model the type of manners, balance, and safety they wish to see in their child’s own use of technology. Parents should take every opportunity to set a positive example for their children by setting their phone aside at the dinner table, engaging in a variety of their own activities, and putting their phone away while driving. For more individualized support in this matter or other psychological service needs, call our office at (954) 288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com to find out how we may be of help!

A Gym for the Brain: Complex Mental Work “think, value, judge, decide, and analyze”

hess is a game that has been played for ages. However, chess is not a passive and effortless activity. Chess requires complex mental work that requires players to think, value, judge, decide, and analyze the entire duration of a game. Chess is considered an intellectual game that requires analytical thinking. Playing chess provides constant challenging brain stimulation. For this reason, chess is beneficial to children and their development. Chess is used as a tool to improve concentration, focus, imagination, and self-confidence in children. It is an intellectual activity in which children have fun while gaining a variety of valuable skills. Chess players must strategize to successfully “check mate” an opponent. They must also use their memory skills to successfully plan and execute a victory. These are skills that are also useful in the classroom to improve learning. Children learn to solve abstract problems on a chess board as well, that can in turn, be used in the classroom setting. Chess promotes self-confidence and respect. Students learn that practice improves one’s game much like extra practice in the classroom also improves the ability to

problem solve and recall concepts on tests and assessments. Through practice in playing chess, students learn to persevere and triumph despite difficult situations, an important life lesson. Chess also reinforces following rules to correctly play the game. Students must learn and adhere to the many rules of chess to be able to play. Respect is emphasized, a golden rule of play is that all players must shake hands before and after a match despite victory or defeat. As a result, children learn to accept the many outcomes of every game win, lose, or draw as a normality of playing the game consistently, a great lesson in sportsmanship. In the end, the most important lesson is to develop a love for thinking and the game of chess! Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been benefiting and enriching children for more than 13 years in Florida. Chess for Kids is present in private and public schools and also has convenient locations in community centers throughout Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. For more information about aftercare and chess in the classroom programs, please contact us at (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.

oes your child love to sing? If the answer is yes, they should plan to join the Coral Springs Children’s Choir this September! Dr. Anthony Zoeller, choral director at Forest Glen Middle School, established the Coral Springs Children’s Choir in the fall of 2018 to provide a fun and enriching choral music experience for children in the greater Coral Springs community. Students in grades 3–5 were invited to join the choir. The inaugural year was a huge success! Dr. Zoeller leads a team of dedicated elementary and middle school vocal music teachers from Broward County Public Schools to work with the students. Choir members participated in weekly rehearsals leading up to performances in both the fall and spring semesters. They were featured at the Coral Springs Zone Showcase in December at Coral Springs High School and performed a concert at St. Mary Magdalene Church. In June, the choir held a 4-day summer camp with students entering grades 3–5 and 6–8. Dr. Zoeller was again joined by a group of dedicated choral music teachers from BCPS and volunteer counselors. Campers received instruction in singing and choreography daily. The students worked within their age group and learned a fully choreographed group piece. On the last day of camp, they performed a concert at FGMS. The Coral Springs Children’s Choir will begin their fall season on September 9th. Rehearsals are every Monday from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm in the FGMS chorus room. The choir follows the Broward Schools calendar. Any interested singer currently enrolled in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 is welcome to attend! The ensemble is non-auditioned, and no experience is necessary; just bring your love to sing! For more information, please visit coralspringschildrenschoir.com. Forest Glen Middle School is located at 6501 Turtle Run Boulevard, Coral Springs, FL 33067.
