Dear Readers,

Greetings to all and delightful wishes for a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season to you and your loved ones! In this issue, I want to recognize our beloved Harvest Fest. It was all started by our friend and pioneer of philanthropy, Reneé Herman. 27 years ago, Reneé set out on a mission to help her community, including those who had fallen on less fortunate times and were in grave need of support. That mission continues today. Well Done Reneé…! Looking for something to do with the kids during Winter Break? Then don’t forget to visit the newly renovated Paragon Theatre at Coral Square. You are sure to be happily surprised by all their upgrades detailed in our feature article on the theatre. Plus, get into the holiday spirit with our Holiday Feast Recipe from our friends at Wild Fork Foods. They make your holidays simple and delicious for you, your family and friends. New Year’s resolutions are sure to follow this magical holiday season. I think that we should not only focus on a single (or handful of personal goals), but rather devote our allegiance to becoming a more physically and mentally healthy community, with tolerance to our friends and neighbors and our common goals. Lifting one another up in the spirit of the community is a worthy intention. Be sure to check out all the great things our students & teachers are accomplishing in our local schools; from sports awards, academic accolades and community service. Projects. We continue to be so proud of our Coral Springs & Parkland schools. They truly are the best! Our events directory has what you need to plan the best time for you and your family. Check out our extensive Event Guide for all the details. This includes the Farmers Markets, Light Up the Park and the Coral Springs Annual Holiday Parade & Parkland’s Family Fun Fest. Don’t worry, we have you covered. Lastly, you can find all the information you need for Winter Break Camps, kids’, spring sport sign ups, and our new professional services directory. This section features all kinds of services from corporate team building, to sporting goods, health insurance and more! There is sure to be something for everybody. Dear Readers, As the holiday season quickly approaches, we begin to realize that the year is almost over. Thinking back to all the plans we made for 2019,

C ora l Sp r i ng s & Par k la nd S por ts & Act iv it ie s D i r e ct o r y | I ssu e 27 | N ove mb e r 2019 - J anuar y 2020

one has to wonder where the time went. The season can easily become very

8

hectic with parties, events, and gift shopping. It’s important that we keep it all in perspective and allow ourselves the opportunity to enjoy the season with family and friends. For some families the holidays are a time of pure joy, while for others they are mixed with sadness as they are remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. For me, the holiday season kicks off every year with the Interfaith Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland hosting a pre-Thanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service where clergy and people from all different faiths come together to give thanks. It is a wonderful service that reminds us that we are all connected and that we are all in this journey together. The service is a beautiful opportunity to join the community, reflect, and give thanks. This year’s service will be on Tuesday, November 26, at 7:00pm at First Church Coral Springs at 8650 W. Sample Road in Coral Springs. I hope you will be able to join us to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday. As the New Year’s resolutions begin, let us start with self-care, patience, and mindfulness. Let us be kinder to ourselves and to others, including those with whom we disagree. Every day we have a new opportunity to put our best foot forward and to be the best version of ourselves. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and this wonderful city. Thank you to all of you who make an impact on the lives of others and for making our city such a special place to live. Enjoy the holidays, the cooler weather, our parks and trails, and time with your family and friends. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

fiscal year, we encourage residents and businesses to stay informed, you can review the Annual Budget online at coralsprings.org/budget. October was a fun-filled, and busy month with our third annual Artoberfest the kick-off of Savor the Notes, our family-friendly haunted house and the Fire Department’s Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner. Fall fun is still underway with the Coral Springs Farmers’ Market, returned to a new location at the former site of City Hall (9551 West Sample Rd.) and will feature an expanded selection of local produce and events for kids. The market will be open the second and fourth Sunday of most months from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through April 2020. For exact market dates, vendors and entertainment, visit www.coralspringsfarmersmarket.com. The popular Bites-N-Sips food truck event returns to the great lawn of City Hall on Friday, November 15 from 6- 10 p.m. With an expanded selection of culinary and great entertainment this is an event you will not want to miss. One the most honorable things we as a City Commission can do is participate in the City’s Veterans Day Ceremony. This year it will be held on Monday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Veterans Park (located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd., just east of University Drive). There are many other activities in November and December, including fun, family holiday fun. Be sure to visit coralsprings.org/events or text the keyword CORALSPRINGS to 888-777 for updates. We hope our residents enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday with family and friends. As always, if you would like to schedule an appointment with your City Officials, call 954-344-5911. Sincerely,

AROUND TOWN has been very positive. According to CEO Michael Whalen, “The look on guests’ faces when they see all the changes is very rewarding. So many people remember coming there as a kid to see a movie. We brought the neighborhood theater back to life for residents of Coral Springs and the surrounding areas.” Paragon Theaters is known for creating partnerships in the community, offering affordable field trips, a premier fundraiser program, monthly sensory-friendly screenings, and great birthday and gaming parties. Their $6 Tuesdays are popular – all movies are just $6 all day (upcharge for 3D). The Paragon Theaters Diamond Rewards Loyalty Program allows loyal guests to quickly earn points towards free tickets (as well as a free ticket on their birthday). These programs, along with their fantastic amenities and superior guest service, make the Paragon Coral Square the ultimate movie going destination. Visit paragontheaters.com/promotions for details on special offers, and the sensory friendly screenings that take place one Saturday a month at 10 am. Sensory friendly screenings have the lights up, the sound down, and young moviegoers are free to move around. Be sure to download their app and follow Paragon_Theaters on Instagram and Facebook.

aragon Theaters and the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting on August 8th at 5:00 pm at the newly renovated Coral Square movie theater. Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook, Coral Springs Vice Mayor Joy Carter, and Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine were in attendance, as well as many chamber and community members. After CEO Michael Whalen and Mayor Brook cut the ribbon, everyone enjoyed appetizers and drinks to celebrate. Guests were invited to view the new private screening room (perfect for parties) and try the electric recliners with footrests that are now in every auditorium, one of many upgrades in the multimillion-dollar renovation. Deerfield Beach based Paragon Theaters is locally owned by Mike Whalen and Mike Wilson. They completely transformed the Coral Square location that the company acquired in September 2018. Reserved leather fully reclining seats with footrests were installed in all auditoriums, as well as digital sound and Sony 4K Projection. Paragon Coral Square also now features a modernized façade, beautiful new lobby, renovated restrooms, bar with beer & wine and expanded concessions, including MyPi inspired pizzas. Automated ticketing and the ability to pre-order concession on the Paragon Theaters app is now available. Murals by local artist, Tracie Brown (traciebrownart.com) fill the lobby and guests enjoy taking fun photos before their movie. The response to the renovation from the community

It’s official. There are fewer than two months until

Thanksgiving, and winter holidays are just around the corner from that. What are you going to feed everyone? If the big meal is happening at your house this year, you can take comfort in knowing that top-quality poultry, meats, and vegetables are right around the corner at Wild Fork Foods. The local specialty market has a wide selection of main

dish items just right for the holiday eating – including traditional favorites like antibiotic-free Whole Turkey, Turkey Breast Roasts, and Prime Beef Brisket, as well as more creative seasonal favorites like Whole Duck, Whole Goose, quail, Leg of Lamb, or Prime Black Angus Beef Prime Rib. What’s even better than the many available quality choices are the great prices Wild Fork Foods offers compared to conventional supermarkets. “We source top-quality items all year round,” says Jacqueline Kleis for Wild Fork Foods. “Our established relationships with our farms and providers ensures incredibly fresh products at a great value, and our snap-freezing process allows us to have plenty of this fresh-frozen product in inventory ready to meet the demands of the holiday rush without raising our normal, everyday low prices.” Wild Fork Foods also offers one more tremendous value over traditional holiday food shopping – free local delivery. “I can’t tell you what a relief it is to not have to carry a 12-to-15 pound turkey out of the store and into your car,” shares Kleis. “At Wild Fork we’ll bring your holiday meal

hero right to your front door.” This convenient time saver is made possible by Wild Fork Foods’ easy-to-use website. Simply go online to www.wildforkfoods.com and enter your zip code to confirm delivery service in your area. Then, select your bird, beef, or other feature protein; add some assorted vegetables and ready-to-bake breads; pay online and arrange a delivery within a 3-hour window, and same-day service is available for orders made prior to 6 pm that day. That means, while you’re busily prepping side dishes and appetizers in advance, Wild Fork Foods is putting together your order to bring it to your home, so you have a real shot at making the actual holiday more simple. Just remember to allow at least a full day for frozen items to thaw before the day you expect to cook them, and an additional day on top of that if you intend to brine or marinate any of your meats. Once thawed, Wild Fork Foods products are exactly like those from your local supermarket, which Kleis is quick to point out also arrive in stores frozen. “There’s a reason we’ve been hearing ‘Thaw the night before’ for so long,” she says. “It’s because experts in the food industry understand that state-of-the-art equipment used in modern freezing techniques ensures a fresh product at this important time of year. At Wild Fork Foods, our snap freezing process ensures quality each and every day – at a value that makes it a smart choice for our South Florida customer.”

Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce Hosts “Job Shadow Day”

O

n October 11th, the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce spearheaded a program called Job Shadow Day, which was held on Thursday, October 17th for the seven local high schools in Coral Springs and Coconut Creek. Job Shadow Day provided an opportunity for students to experience what a business owner or professional does on a daily basis. For a few hours, students had a chance to walk through a part of the workday as a “shadow” to local businesses with the objective of promoting career development. They were able to witness firsthand the work environment, employability criteria and occupational skills in practice, displaying the value of post-high school education and training and potential career options. DECA and BPA (Business Professionals of America) students got the chance to shadow Chamber members businesses including Sign-a-Rama, Planet Fitness, Albion Staffing Solutions, Jersey Mike’s, Marco’s Pizza, Lady & The Mug and Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife. Job

Shadow Day was designed to reinforce the link between the high school classroom and work requirements. “Job shadowing allows a student, employee, or intern to gain comprehensive knowledge about what an employee who holds a particular job does each day. Job shadowing gives students perspective to understand the nuances of a particular job, which I think is extremely important to guide them toward what they want to be when they leave high school as we are providing the ability to sample a certain profession”, says Cindy Brief, President/ CEO of the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce. For more information about how the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce contributes to the education of the community’s young professionals in the DECA and BPA programs, please visit https://www.csrchamber.com/educationfoundation , or contact Gulie Carrington, Director of Operations, Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce, (954) 752-4242 ext. 2003.

WHY YOUR CHILD SHOULD START TRAINING JIU-JITSU S

o many kids don’t go to school because they are afraid of bullies. Recent research indicates that bullying may be the biggest source of low self-esteem in children. According to some studies, the vast majority of the cases of bullying are not reported at all. It’s well known that Jiu-Jitsu can be a tool to help kids stand up to bullies, but how? Here are the 4 reasons why the gentle art actually helps kids to deal with abusive colleagues. 1.) Self-confidence repels cowards. A bully is a coward. He or she identifies those who lack self-confidence and prey on it. Jiu-Jitsu gives kids the self-confidence to stand up for themselves at the moment of the first approach, usually a verbal one. Once you know that you can defend yourself, you will let the bully know right away and they will usually back off. 2.) An antidote to fear and insecurity. There are two main ingredients to bullying: fear and insecurity. The fearful is usually the victim and the insecure is usually the aggressor that seeks confrontation to hide their own feelings of weakness. The gentle art will teach kids to defend themselves when necessary and help them deal with fear. At the same time, it will address insecurity and help that aggressive kid to be more confident, polite and respectful. 3.) Respect for differences. There’s no room for prejudice on the mat. As you have to actually prove yourself against all sorts of people, you quickly realize that we are all equal in our

shortcomings and potentials. The difference lies on how much work we put in to neutralize one and boost the other. This notion will most likely accompany the child outside the academy as well. 4.) The bonds of friendship. Bullies go after kids who have trouble making connections, feel different and don’t relate well in the group. Jiu-Jitsu will work as a mediator and help the child make friends. Being a contact sport, the gentle art is a channel to make everyone fit into the group. If you don’t fear the group, being part of it becomes much easier. Due to the non-violent nature of the techniques, our program is one of the few effective countermeasures to bullying for children between the ages of 5 and 15. We will teach your child to use verbal assertiveness to deter bullies and several non-violent self-defense techniques to stay safe if physically assaulted. Most importantly, we don’t teach how to punch or kick, since this often does more harm than good. Instead, we use leverage-based control holds to neutralize threats without violence. Our brand-new facility and state-of-the-art equipment are waiting to be discovered. Come visit and gives us a chance to show how BJJ can be a positive force in your kid’s life! n thIn the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-seven years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the year-round effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” According to FeedingAmerica.org, 18.2% of children in Broward County, roughly 73,950 are in a food insecurity situation. 36% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. Therefore, in addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, they make an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that are given out to families in need from our local schools throughout the year. They also start each school year off by providing well-stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies. This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 200 public and private schools are

involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families (approximately 10,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time. Distribution sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the weeks’ worth of groceries and a Thanksgiving Turkey and all the trimmings or a gift card, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the Harvest Drive Boutiques so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High School and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and

shoes, books and household items are most in need by these families. After decades of orchestrating and honing the details and operation of Harvest Drive, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Harriet White, Amy Freund, Tanja Ylenius, Karen Navarrete, Holly Stracquadaine, all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee. The compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate is inspirational. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and nonperishable food you are able to give. • Donate food for our volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word! Harvest Drive would like to give a special thank you to the following sponsors: Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Children’s Services Council, The Jim Moran Foundation, A+ Mini Storage, Ultimate Software, Publix Super Market Charities, Food For All, Michael Freedland, Bob Harms, 100+ Women Who Care, Castle Management, 2 Men And A Truck, Broward County Schools, and Chick-fil-A Davie North.

Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. Email: rhibshman@bellsouth.net.

THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE

Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading with Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

HELPING CHILDREN WITH DIVORCE C

hanges in family structure can have varying effects on a family member, family unit, and extended family environment. While there are many factors that can lead to separation or divorce, the question often asked is how we can support our children as they cope and adjust to the change. This includes reducing further avoidable distress. An import caveat is understanding that some individuals or families experience a sense of relief in this process due to the reduction in conflict within the home (emotional, verbal, or physical). Negative effects include, confusion, anxiety, shame, guilt, fear, anger, isolation, depression, mistrust, and withdrawal. The following guidelines serve as a start to managing separation and/or divorce. • INCREASING AWARENESS: Knowing your strengths, limitations, personal boundaries and emotional cues can help you to feel prepared to manage stress and unexpected issues. Getting into the practice of recognizing physical changes at the onset of emotion can help to mitigate unwanted outbursts or poor decision making. If you are aware that when you get upset, your muscles tend to tighten and/or your heart begins to race, it can become a powerful signal to take a step back and acknowledge your emotions to reduce distress for yourself and your children. This is especially important if you are speaking to your ex-partner in front of your children and the conversation begins to get heated. • HELP YOUR CHILDREN: First, by modeling the behavior for them. Second, by beginning to acknowledge and validate their emotions. Your awareness of your child’s behavior can help you to step in and provide them with healthy coping skills to manage their distress. Always keep in mind, you may not agree with how or why your child is upset but you can help them through the emotion by validating their experience. This helps a child to feel heard and valued for who they are. • SELF-CARE: The age-old example of placing the oxygen mask on yourself before helping your child or others in an airplane emergency stands true in general but even more so in the event of a separation or divorce. Making sure you are getting adequate rest, eating well, exercising, and taking time for yourself. If you are tired or overwhelmed and your child comes home with a slight problem, your reaction to them and the problem will likely be exaggerated as compared to being well rested and level-headed. Keeping up with school demands, work demands, and maybe life in general, can be trying. Give yourself the foundation to take on these challenges as well as the challenges involved in a separation and divorce.

By Dr. Kelly Santandrea & Dr. David Yudell

• STRUCTURE AND ROUTINE: People perform better with structure. Children rely on their

caregivers to provide them with structure until they can apply it themselves. From birth, we rely on our parents to teach and model structure so we can regulate and have a certain level of expectation about what is to come. When change is happening, maintaining structure and routine is imperative in order to control distress. When time-sharing, routine and structure should be as similar as possible if not identical. If attainable, expectations for homework, chores and bedtime before the separation should continue after the separation and carry across to both homes. If the child can learn to expect what is acceptable in both homes, disorganization and disruption can be reduced. This is for the benefit of the child as well as for each parent. Having a conversation between parents can help this if we are to keep the child’s well-being as a priority. • COMMUNICATION: Communication between parents is imperative and if it cannot be done in a healthy helpful manner there are other options to consider. Programs like Talking Parents or Family Wizard can help maintain communication regarding the child. If you are aware that communication is problematic, make it a general rule that messages cannot be passed through the child and any communication between parents should focus on the child not on the behavior of a parent or how one feels about the other parent. Legal support such as an Attorney, mediator or Guardian ad Litem may be another option should this not be possible. One of my strongest

recommendations is that the parents find a therapist to begin co-parenting sessions. This modality is different from couples counseling / marriage therapy (and often initially seen with resistance after the decision to separate is made). Co-parenting is vastly different. It focuses on communication and unification with the goal of raising the children. It can be scheduled regularly or as needed, but again strongly recommended. • OUTSIDE SUPPORT AND HELP: Moving through life events such as a change in the

family unit, whether it be temporary or permanent, can be made easier by reaching out for support and guidance. Asking reliable family members and friends for help can lessen the stress and demand as you move through the change and cope thereafter. There are many support groups within our community available for single and co-parenting parents. Knowing your legal options as well as what professional therapeutic options are available, can be helpful. Services may include learning skills to help your child transition, co-parenting skills and individual therapy are all available for all ages. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

P

revention of disease and illness is the best way to help promote health and wellness. As parents, we all want what is best for our children and sometimes this is a decision regarding whether or not to give our children certain vaccines. Vaccines help children develop immunity without the child having to suffer through a disease or illness that the vaccine helps prevent. While vaccines can be temporarily painful and unpleasant, the long-lasting benefits outweigh these temporary side effects. Routine visits to see your healthcare provider are important to

make sure your children are up to date on vaccines and given the latest recommendations. This is just as important for young teenagers and adolescents as it is for newborns. In my professional career, one of the most asked questions from parents is my opinion on the HPV vaccine and whether or not to vaccinate their young child or teenager. HPV stands for the Human Papilloma Virus which is a well-known and common virus that unfortunately will affect 14 million Americans each year, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). This statistic includes teenagers. HPV can be harmless, but if the virus progresses it can lead to health problems such as cancer. The HPV vaccine is a vaccine that parents often ask about as young teens start going to a gynecology office for routine visits and other gynecological concerns. The HPV vaccine is not a mandatory vaccine in the state of Florida, however it can provide lifelong benefits by protecting children and teens against the virus. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has ten years of data showing that the vaccine has long lasting protection when given at the appropriate age. The CDC also estimates that approximately 9 in 10 people will get an HPV infection at some point in their lifetime. Due to this number, vaccinations and prevention of these diseases becomes an important topic for young men and women as they approach their adolescent years. Pediatric and

gynecologic offices usually offer the HPV vaccine during a routine annual visit. It is important for parents to discuss the possibility of getting this vaccine with their adolescents and young teenagers to decide if this vaccine is something that they want to receive to help protect them later in life. Many young women are unaware of their initial exposure to this virus as it often comes with no symptoms. Therefore, prevention becomes key. The HPV vaccine is called Gardisil. In 2006, Gardisil was approved for use. According to the study data put forth by the CDC, the clinical trials had over 29,000 participants to help assure the safety of the new vaccine. This vaccine protects against HPV Types 6, 11, 16 and 18. The newest vaccine that was approved for use in 2014 is called the Gardisil 9. In addition to the types of HPV that the initial Gardisil protects against, there are 5 other types that were added to this vaccine. The age range for the current available Gardisil vaccines is wide; between 9 and 26. The CDC recommends initiating the vaccine prior to the child’s 15th birthday. The vaccine is a series of 2 or 3 injections, given approximately 6 months apart, with some children requiring a 3rd dose depending on their age when the series was started. The CDC continually studies the safety and efficacy of the vaccine and is an excellent resource for all information pertaining to the Gardisil vaccine.

Dr. William A. Peña, Board Certified Pediatric Dentist at American Pediatric Dental Group

M

y dentist referred me to you because of my child’s behavior, what do you do in this case?

We are a kid-friendly dental office with the ultimate goal of providing your family a positive and rewarding experience during your visit with us. We have private rooms available and the staff is warm and friendly and love working with children of all ages. During your visit, you may accompany your child. The dentist will review your child’s medical history, dental needs, and will evaluate your child’s behavior. Based on his/her assessment, the dentist may recommend laughing gas, sedation, or hospital dentistry, depending on your child’s needs.

The dentist has recommended treatment for my child’s cavities, but what is the point if baby teeth will fall out anyway?

Our dentist has recommended treatment because by definition, cavities are an infection. If left untreated, these cavities will continue to get bigger and deeper. This in turn may lead to pain, discomfort, and missed days from school. In severe cases the infection may spread beyond the tooth and into the surrounding tissue, causing an abscess (a walled-off infection outside the tooth that often times looks like a “bubble” or “pimple” on the child’s gums). Remember baby teeth are there for a reason. They give your child something to chew with and serve as “place-holders” to allow the permanent teeth to erupt in their correct space.

What is the youngest patient you see and why should a 1 or 2-year-old come in to see the dentist? We recommend that parents bring in their kids by age 1. This recommendation is made to establish a dental home so that children grow comfortable visiting the dentist. No radiographs are taken on children younger than 3 unless needed. The staff will perform a cleaning and fluoride will be applied to the teeth. More importantly, this visit is meant to properly educate parents on correct tooth brushing techniques and establish positive

nutritional habits. During the visit, the dentist will discuss with you what foods and habits to avoid at this age and how to properly care for your child’s teeth.

Should I be concerned with my child’s stains on his/her teeth? What causes these stains to appear?

Typically stains can appear for a host of reasons. On the primary or “baby” teeth, white spots appear as a sign of demineralization. These white spots are often the initial stages of a cavity and in preschool age children is often caused by them falling asleep with a bottle (or sippy cup) with milk or juice. It is not the bottle or sippy cup per se that causes the cavities to appear, but the sugar in the milk or juice “clinging” on to the tooth surface all night long. It is for this reason, that brushing both at night and morning is vital for your child’s oral health. Stains may also appear on teeth due to a condition known as enamel hypoplasia which is caused by the malformation of the enamel (the outer mineralized surface of the tooth) for a host of reasons. On permanent teeth white spots may also appear due a condition known as fluorosis which is the incorporation of excess fluoride in your child’s teeth. Our pediatric dentist will determine the condition of the teeth and explain in more detail during the dental visit.

What is sedation dentistry?

We now offer in-house sedation services that no longer require a trip to the hospital! The child is monitored by a medical anesthesiologists in a safe and state-of-the-art facility. There are times when traditional approaches to treatment are insufficient to calm or soothe an extremely apprehensive or fearful child. Children who have experienced an unpleasant visit at the dentist may develop a phobia that can be carried over into adulthood and can lead to neglect of his/her oral health. The good news is that this fear can be reversed, and children can actually develop a positive perception of going to the dentist regardless of negative past experiences. The dentist will review the child’s behavior and medical condition to determine if they are a candidate for sedation.

A trip to the library can help your child build a lifelong love of books,

62

reading and learning. Libraries have books, movies, videogames and more on their shelves, and it doesn’t cost anything to borrow them from the library. You can also read and listen to books online for free with your library card, which is free for anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Broward County. Reading together sets an example for your child and shows that you believe reading is important. Books “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss Reading to your child for at least 15 minutes every day, starting from birth, is important to your child’s healthy development and future success in school. Children who are read to regularly, show more activity in the parts of their brain that help with reading comprehension and understanding stories. Even the youngest baby loves being held and hearing the voice of their family members as they read a book aloud. Your local library has more books than any one person could afford to buy, and anyone can borrow the books for free. With so many books to choose from, it’s fun and easy for young children to discover new favorite stories. Librarians are dedicated to building diverse collections, so books can serve as windows (letting children see other cultures) and mirrors (so children see themselves reflected in the books they read). Children learn about different cultures, customs, religions and living situations in their neighborhood and around the world by reading books that reflect diversity. Librarians “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Mr. Rogers Libraries are more than just books; it’s the people inside the library who make it a welcoming space for children and families and connect them to the information they need. From the librarians who help your child choose their next favorite book, to the workers who help you check out books, people who choose to work in libraries are dedicated to helping. Most librarians have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.); Youth Services (or Children’s) Librarians specialize in serving children and families. Stop by the Reference Desk at your local library and say hello! Storytime “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss Story times are more than entertaining – they help develop important pre-reading and early literacy skills while encouraging a lifelong love of books by singing, talking, reading and playing together. Librarians share their favorite stories and help families pick out books to read at home. Activities and free play at the end of story time encourages conversation, builds vocabulary and gives adults and children a chance to make new friends. Children tell us stories long before they learn to read. Story time gives them a place to learn the art of sharing stories and lets them know that their stories are important.

Play “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” - Fred Rogers Many libraries have an interactive play area with puzzles, puppets and props designed to encourage exploration and parent/child interaction. Play fosters children’s imaginations and encourages cooperation while developing early literacy skills. Play helps children express feelings, and allows children to think out loud about experiences. Playing with puppets helps children develop narrative skills and learn sequencing (stories happen in an order: first, next, last). Toy kitchens and plastic food promote healthy nutrition, help children learn about other cultures, give children new words (zucchini, eggplant) and encourage creativity. Puzzles improve hand-eye coordination and encourage children to think and solve problems. Through interactive play, children are encouraged to play together cooperatively and empowered to be responsible. These activities help build connections in your child’s brain, especially from birth to age 3. Through the shared experiences and resources found at the library, parents and caregivers can encourage their children to value reading and become lifelong learners. According to the latest research from the Kids & Family Reading Report, 95% of parents agree “every community needs to have a public library.” Have you visited your local library lately? Stop by, say hi to your librarians, and let us help you build your child’s love of books. The Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library, Research, Information Technology Center is a unique joint-use library serving the residents of Broward Countyas well as NSU students, faculty, and staff members. SCHOOLS teachers and students are committed to teaching and learning, and our support system of volunteers and partners assist with community involvement. The Raider Nation will have a new “Captain” on our voyage this school year, as Mrs. Cory Smith has been selected as an Intern-Director under the Wallace Grant. We are sad to see her move on; however, Mrs. Smith’s dynamic leadership style extends beyond the borders of our school campus. We are excited for her next leadership chapter. Go Mrs. Smith!

Ramblewood’s new Intern-Principal is Mr. Andrew Kirk. The Raider Nation welcomes Mr. Kirk and is looking forward to learning his leadership style for our school community. Our teachers and leadership team think beyond traditional education to transform learning and provide an academically challenging environment including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, often referred to as the gold standard of learning. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a balanced program of education that prepares students for success at university and life beyond. It is designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of students. At the heart of the IB program is a focus on developing students who are inquirers, thinkers, knowledgeable, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. As part of Nord Anglia Education, the world’s leading educational organization, the student learning experience is enhanced through collaborations with Juilliard, MIT and UNICEF – giving our students the opportunity to experience a multi-disciplinary approach to STEAM and Performing Arts curriculum. Through Nord Anglia’s UNICEF par tnership and Global Campus, students participate in global expeditions, connect with 50,000 peers around the world and learn how they can be world changers. estglades Middle School has had a very busy and exciting start to the school year! Congratulations to the entire Westglades family for the tremendous academic success that we have experienced. We are proud to be an “A School for another year. We are also the NUMBER ONE middle school in Broward County. In addition, we are recipients of the Five Star School and the Golden School Awards. As part of our school-wide Social Emotional Learning Initiative, we are focusing on fostering healthy friendships. In September, we kicked off this initiative by participating in Start with Hello Week. Our students and staff participated in a week of activities designed to enhance our existing, positive school climate and reduce social isolation. We were reminded that if we see someone alone, we reach out and say hello. Clubs and activities are booming at Westglades. We aim to challenge students academically, while also giving them the opportunity to participate in interest-based electives, organizations, and clubs. This year through our clubs and organizations, students will take the lead in supporting school and district-sponsored initiatives for the social and emotional well-being of their peers. The students will sponsor activities and promote

Our Harvest Drive Club worked diligently to promote and collect food items for the county Harvest Drive program. A full list of WMS Clubs and Organizations can be found on our website at www.WestgladesMiddle.com. Westglades was happy to host a few very successful events for parents recently. Our Parent Resource Night invited parents to participate in workshops such as Vaping Prevention, Internet Safety, and Mind-Body Medicine. ere at Parkside Elementary, we are PROUD TO BE PANTHERS! We are expanding on last year’s theme where we “Planted Seeds of Kindness” and we are focusing on how we can BE kind, courageous, good friends, etc. Basically, we are encouraging each student to be the best version of him or herself possible. The Principal of Parkside, Mrs. Hall continues her tradition of reading to all the students over the morning announcements. She began this school year by going from class to class and reading Diane Alber’s “A Little SPOT of Kindness!” In the front hallway there is a bulletin board where students and staff can be called out for their “SPOTS” of kindness. Keep an eye out for Mrs. Hall who also gives students their own sticker spots so that they can remember to share kindness all day. Our wonderful PTA was at it again and outdid themselves on a Popcorn Fundraiser. They made enough money that they were able to treat all students

beach to volunteer for International Coastal Clean Up Day. It was a fantastic way to lend a hand together with friends to help keep our beaches clean. Our Environmental Club is also encouraging recycling at PSE. PepsiCo water bottle recycling containers are now available on our campus. Park Springs celebrated our many cultures and diverse backgrounds with our Multicultural Parade in September. to a Halloween Dance Party at the end of October. Also, at the end of October, we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week with a week of fun spirit day activities. November will be here soon along with our always well received Thanksgiving Luncheon; a fun chance for our students to invite their entire family to enjoy lunch together at school. In December, we will have our holiday show once again in addition to a “snow” day – South Florida style. Later in the year, the classes will participate in field days, educational trips, and also share projects with their families and the community at our annual Exhibition and Spaghetti Dinner. Ms. Shavelson was chosen by her peers as our Teacher of the Year and Ms. Rivera, our Media Clerk, was chosen as our Non-Instructional Employee of the year this year. In addition, this year, our own Mrs. Hall was nominated as Principal of the Year. We are so PROUD of our HEAD PANTHER!

e have enjoyed meeting so many new friends and their families at our back to school events! The Florida Marlins invited us to cheer on the team at a baseball game, and we enjoyed family nights at Tijuana Flats, Pieology Pizzeria, and Anna Marie’s Pizza. It is also always fun to cool off with our monthly visits from the Kona Ice truck. Thank you for supporting all of the Park Springs fundraising efforts. Fundraising dollars support our school and we are excited to announce our new classroom door shades will be installed over the campus by the end of this year. The Park Springs PTO worked with local company, Lockdown Door Shades, to purchase door shades to protect all of the classroom windows on the Park Springs campus. We are extremely proud to report that Ramblewood

Elementary earned a school grade of “B” for the 2018–19 school year. Kudos the staff and students on this great accomplishment. Our goal this year is to achieve the “A.” We would also like to congratulate Miss Francesca Caravello, Teacher of the Year, and Ms. Iraides Rodroguez, Employee of the Year. These staff members were chosen by their colleagues as the best in their categories.

The PTO family events have gotten off to an exciting beginning of the year. In August, the PTO coordinated an Ice Social Family Night for the community. The participants enjoyed delicious Ice Cream and other treats. In September, the PTO also coordinated a Movie Night and a Bingo Night. Both events were packed with staff, parents, and students. We have many more events scheduled for the remainder of the year and can’t wait to share the details in the next article

oral Park Elementary is off to a “KIND” start to the school year. We continue to focus on the importance of choosing kind, believing that we can “Lead with Kindness.” We have officially kicked off our “Start with Hello” campaign. This program enables students to make a difference with their peers in a simple, fun, and impactful way by encouraging them to take small but powerful actions to promote connectedness and inclusion, and to identify and help others who are showing signs of social isolation. Our Play Pal Program has started, where we have over 100 third, fourth, and fifth grade students who provide peer mentoring to students in all grade levels who could benefit from additional academic or social support. These are just some of the ways we are working to spread “kindness” and invite our entire Coral Park community to do the same. For our parents, we have formed our School Advisory Council (SAC) and our School Advisory Forum (SAF). We invite our school community to participate in these meetings to provide a parent voice as we collaborate together to make

donations for the Harvest Drive on October 25th and will continue to do so until November 7th. In addition to the items on the flyer, we’re also collecting gift cards to Publix. Please send all gift cards to the front office. Thank you for your support! PTO is getting ready for their annual Fun Run Fundraiser in November. Parents, keep an eye out for information and make sure you register your child on the Fun Run website. This year, the Fun Run donations will be used to purchase new furniture in the Media Center and around campus. Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Dana Melita and our School Related Employee of the Year, Katie Curran. We’re happy to have them representing HHE! Coral Park be the best it can be for our students. The next meeting is scheduled for November 13th at 8:00 am. We had our first parent Title 1 Literacy Night. It was a successful evening where parents and children participated in a variety of sessions led by our rock star staff focused on supporting literacy. We have several more planned throughout the school year. Coral Park Elementary is located within the Coral Springs Innovation Zone. The other schools within this zone are Park Springs Elementary, Hunt Elementary, Forest Hills Elementary, Forest Glen Middle School, and Coral Springs High School. You are invited to participate in our Coral Springs Zone meetings to learn about the happenings within our schools and how we support and prepare our students as they transition from elementary to middle to high school. Parents and staff coming together helps to build a foundation for positive home school connections. We invite you to partner with us to achieve a successful school year!

Samaritan’s Purse

his is the 5th year that two sisters from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Angelina (12th grader) and Gianna Brier (10th grader) have organized and raised money and awareness for Operation Christmas Child – Samaritan’s Purse. Through this charity, they give gifts and school supplies to children deeply in need. Children to whom just one pair of colorful new socks, a toothbrush and a tiny toy will bring unimaginable joy. Over the years, the girls have filled over 1,000 boxes for children to receive for Christmas. “Along with gifts, we also place a personal note in each box,” said Angelina. The girls have received reply letters back from some of the kids through the years, “The best feeling is knowing that we are able to make a child happy. The letters we have received back from the kids

always express how appreciative they are to receive a toothbrush, small toys or even a pair of socks.” Angelina and Gianna already hosted a fundraiser at Publix with students from the Tri-M Music Honors Society and family in August and will have their second fundraiser at Mabec Grill Restaurant on November 6th from 6pm – 9pm. All donations will go towards postage ($9 a box) and buying items to fill the boxes for the kids. Items are being collected up until November 15th (small stuffed animals, jump rope, match box cars, children size socks, school supplies). If you are interested in volunteering or donating to Operation Christmas Child, please call (954) 415-1823 or email TheresaBrier@gmail.com.
