Dear Readers,

It may be unbelievable, but we have begun a new decade! The entire Sports & Activities Directory team would like to wish you all the very best of health, happiness and success for you and your family in 2020 and beyond! In this issue you will find a very informative article from our partners at the Children’s Services Council. It focuses on the best ways to protect our children around the water. Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of injury death to children from ages 1 to 4. There are several things parents can do to help keep children safe around pools. That is why there will be a family water safety day on Sunday, April 5th at Cypress Pool Water Park. Broward Health Coral Springs , the Pediatric Drowning Prevention Task Force (PDPTF) and the City of Coral Springs will host a free, fun-filled educational event with free trial swim lessons, music, prizes, mermaid meet and greet, CPR practice, free sports pack bags, vouchers for future free swim lessons, free entrance to waterpark, and free food and ice cream (while supplies last) and more! In an effort for continual healing our beautiful community, please consider supporting the 3rd Annual We are Stoneman Douglas event held at Parkland Golf and Country Club on Sunday, March 15th. Funds are being raised for Parkland Cares, a nonprofit organization that has awarded over $400k for mental health counseling since the 2018 tragedy. Their mission is to provide immediate and longterm funding and awareness for mental health counseling for the MSD shooting survivors, their families and the community at large. Deciding on which Spring and Summer Camp your child will attend may seem far off, however, now is the time to start planning. We are featuring the best that Coral Springs & Parkland has to offer in this issue and the next. Camps are an excellent way for your kids to expand their social circles while finding new areas of interest and fun. From the arts and sports camps, to the educational and activities camps, there is a fun and affordable option for every child to enjoy. Don’t risk losing a spot, enroll now! The weather is fantastic, and events are in abundance this Spring, so get out to the parks and the venues with your family and friends and make some wonderful memories together. Remember, time is our most precious asset, we should all spend pursuing activities that bring us joy. I wish you a wonderful spring and look forward to seeing you at the fields, parks, and everywhere else around Coral Springs & Parkland. My best to you,

Kim Kadel Publisher

Dear Readers,

8

We are now in the middle of the 2020 legislative session in Florida. From January 14th through March 13th those of us in local municipal government keep a close eye on Tallahassee. What happens in our state capital has great impact (sometimes positive and sometimes negative) on us locally. During the Florida Legislative Session, we remain vigilant and follow the legislation being introduced that may positively or negatively affect our City and residents. Two years ago a bill preempting local rule and regulation on micro cell towers in public rights of way passed and was written into law under the objections of most cities in Florida. On a more positive note, last year a bill making texting and driving a primary offense was supported by our City and passed into law. In addition to advocating for appropriations and other funding, we are also monitoring and advocating against other bills that would have a negative impact on our City. One such bill is SB 1128 on short-term rentals, which, if passed, would further limit Parkland’s ability to regulate vacation rentals in the City—including inspections and licensing. Both before and during the legislative session we continue to advocate for our City and residents with various members of the Florida House and Senate from both political parties and through advocacy groups such as the Broward League of Cities and the Florida League of Cities. If you would like to follow some of the bills yourself, you can do so at www.flsenate.gov and www.myfloridahouse.gov. The “bills” links on those sites will provide you quick access to what will be decided in Tallahassee during session. On a local level, if you would like to see how your municipal government works, you can join us on February 5, February 19, March 4, March 18, April 1, and April 15 all at 7:00pm at Parkland City Hall for our regular City Commission meetings and you can view the agenda and back-up information at www.cityofparkland. org/cc. Additionally you can watch our meetings live or via archived video at www.cityofparkland.org/ccm The 2020 Census kicks off and in mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. The census determines how federal funding flows to states and communities and also determines the number of congressional seats each state receives. It is very important that every resident is counted and we strongly encourage everyone to respond to the census either online, by phone, or by mail. For more information on the 2020 Census, please visit www.2020census.gov. Stay up to date on our events and announcements by signing up for the City of Parkland e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at www.cityofparkland. org/notifyme , follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/copfl and download the “MyParkland” app. If you would like to share a comment or concern with me, you can do so at chunschofsky@cityofparkland. org. I look forward to hearing from you! Sincerely,

Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

We hope everyone has had a great start to the New Year! There many events taking place throughout the month of February like outdoor concerts, festivals and fitness opportunities. Are you looking for a fun way to meet your fitness goals while meeting new friends? Check out Sunset Yoga at the ArtWalk in Downtown Coral Springs every Saturday evening from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sponsored by the City of Coral Springs CRA, this free Yoga class is taught by Juliana Trejo from Yoga 4 Life Studios West. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, bring a yoga mat and a bottle of water. Registration is not required, but participants must complete a waiver. Regardless of what you plan to do on February 14, we ask that you take a moment out of your day to do something positive to promote hope, encouragement and healing. Our final two public art installations from The Power of Art series will be unveiled on February 14th. The first is Big Picture: Resilience, by award-winning photojournalist for the Miami Herald, Carl Juste. He and his team led workshops exploring the use of photojournalism as a form of self-expression about healing, resiliency, bearing witness and capturing history. The photos will be on display from February 14 until the end of May, along with audio. Peace & Love by artists Rosario Marquardt and Roberto Behar of R&R Studios will formally open to visitors at the corner of Sample Road and Sportsplex Drive in Coral Springs. The artists worked with the community to create at “super billboard” as a beacon of compassion and care for our community. The billboard will remain on-site through May 2020. “Today’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,”

says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to

businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. For more information on hiring a professional tax preparer, feel free to contact Bruce Weinberg at (561) 487-5765 or visit www.cpaweinberg.com.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. Email: rhibshman@bellsouth.net.

Afterschool Activities l

W

By Dr. Kelly Santandrea & Dr. David Yudel

ith the new year upon us, we find ourselves scrambling to get back into a routine of school, work and the rigor of our day-to-day lives. While many families are involved in after school activities, others have struggled to find the time or may not yet be convinced of the importance of afterschool programs. The value of participating in afterschool activities is, on a whole, often underestimated or misunderstood. The following article explores various aspects that should be considered when contemplating various activities and choosing the right one for your child and essentially your family. ACTIVITIES AND MENTAL HEALTH: One of the main concerns we hear from children and adults who are struggling with mood concerns or anxiety is the need to withdraw and isolate. It is not uncommon for individuals to avoid previously enjoyed activities or those that require extra effort or interpersonal interaction. Activity, whether it be physical or non-physical is what mental health professional utilize to promote behavioral activation. Essentially, our behavior impacts our thoughts and feelings. When we are engaged in activity, we are more likely to feel capable, have improved mood and self esteem than if we were to isolate ourselves at home. Activity also helps to distract unhelpful thoughts from increasing or intensifying. Years of research show that any type of activity, whether it be pleasurable or goal oriented, has an advantageous effect on mood. ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL SKILLS PROMOTION: The majority of afterschool activities require some form of social interaction and it is therefore accepted that social skills are put into action. While it is true that social interaction takes place at home amongst family members, engaging with individuals that are not as familiar to us, teach and strengthen social skills. Social interaction is an integral part of human functioning. Human beings in general do not and cannot live in isolation. Engagement in social interaction from a young age promotes healthy cognitive development, language development, and creativity. Children learn to navigate differences, problem solve, and find a place in the ever-changing world that provides some form of structure and consistency. When these skills are learned from an early age, the demands of adulthood are more manageable and are not as threatening.

SCHOOL PERFORMANCE: Years of research and school performance records support the notion that well-balanced afterschool activity engagement supports improved academic performance. Children and adolescents are much more likely to have improved classroom performance when they have an alternative source of engagement added to their weekly demands. Organized and well managed afterschool activities reduce involvement in risky behaviors that can have a direct impact on academic functioning. Alternative activities also serve as a way to “take a breather” from the demands of school and allow children to exercise their mind and bodies in different ways that are fun and engaging. One area that should also be monitored is overscheduling your child. Sometimes too much activity can create demand and stress that interferes with all aspects of our children’s lives. Be aware of increases in emotional outbursts, decreases in academic performance and or other changes in behavior when your child has multiple activities throughout the week. Finding the right activity for your child and your family is not as easy as it seems. Many factors need to be taken into consideration such as finances, time, availability, specific child needs, and interest. We highly recommend seeking support if you are struggling to find a good fit for your own child. This is not a one-size-fits-all process. Factors such as psychological functioning, physical capabilities, family dynamics, individual likes and dislikes, as well as timemanagement difficulties need to be considered. If you have noticed a change in your child’s mood or willingness to engage in activities as well as difficulties in academic performance or maintaining friendships, it is important to know when to reach out and what therapeutic options are out there to support your child and your family. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

As a mother and a Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Francis Carmona

52

gave us some good advice on how to take care of our youngest ones as they start getting their first teeth. When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up? By the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and in order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. What should I use to clean my baby’s teeth and when should I start? Once the first tooth erupts, proper hygiene is necessary to keep baby’s teeth strong and healthy. Cleansing the infant’s teeth as soon as they erupt with a soft toothbrush will help reduce bacteria and therefore, decrease the chances of dental decay. You should brush their teeth twice a day using a soft toothbrush. It is very important to use a toothbrush that is age-size appropriate.

How can I prevent decay caused by nursing? Avoid nursing your baby to sleep or putting anything other than water in their bed-time bottle. Also, learn the proper way to clean, brush, and floss your child’s teeth. Bring them to the office regularly to have his/her teeth and gums checked. What can I expect when my baby starts teething? Teething can sometimes lead to discomfort in the area of eruption, irritability and excessive salivation. Treatment of symptoms includes oral analgesics and chilled rings for the child to chew. The use of topical anesthetics, including over-the-counter teething gels, to relieve discomfort is discouraged due to the potential toxicity of these products in infants. Is it bad to use a pacifier? According to the AAPD, both pacifier and finger sucking are considered normal behavior in infants. It all depends on frequency and duration. There is no scientific evidence on how much is too much. The most important thing to have in mind is to use the pacifier for short periods of time, only a few times a day and hopefully not after the age of 3. Of course it would be great to avoid the pacifier completely. However, as a mother of two, I understand how sometimes a pacifier can soothe your child and help you control a situation, specially if you have other small children at home. When can I start using fluoride toothpaste? As soon as the first tooth starts erupting. The AAPD, on their most recent guidelines, recommends to use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste to softly brush the new teeth twice a day. Make sure you are using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste that are appropriate for their age. Once the child reaches the age of 3, you can increase the amount of toothpaste to a pea size. Carmona Smiles specializes in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. It is located in the Heron Bay plaza in Coral Springs. They are open Monday to Friday and Saturdays. They offer complimentary consultations for babies under the age of 2.

They will also be taught a four-step framework to building joyful, empowering, connecting and engaging environments. Professionals trained in the Playmaker 101 workshop have provided classroom settings where students exhibited less PTSD symptoms and increased resilience. Students became significantly less depressive, anxious, angry, isolated, aggressive and oppositional. They became significantly more joyful, pro-social, and independent.* Research shows that even one relationship with a trusted, skilled and loving adult can help protect children from the catastrophic, long-term effects of toxic stress and trauma. The Playmakers team works to create a world where kids who have endured the most devastating circumstances have the healing relationships they need to lead good lives. **Playmaker Powerplay Effectiveness Study For more information or to register, please contact Cindy Kaufman by email at cindykauf@aol.com.

Ramblewood’s Bazaar Event…and More!

ow, it’s already January! We wish everyone in our community a Happy New Year! We welcomed our students back from the winter holidays and started the 3rd quarter with high expectations. We had many events for the months of November and December. In November, we had a Scholastic Book Fair. It was very successful, as parents and staff purchased a vast amount of books. We also hosted a “Touch A Truck” event for the community. We had an awesome turnout, as everyone enjoyed going into the vehicles and eating delicious foods. Our 5th grade students graduated from the Gang Resistance and Drug Education (GRADE) program. Thank you to our Coral Springs Resource Officers, James Weber and Steve Daniello for delivering the GRADE lessons to our students. Parents were invited

to have a Thanksgiving lunch with all of the fixings with their child(ren). Veterans were also invited to join in the festivities. Our feeder middle school, Ramblewood Middle, brought their band and chorus to perform holiday songs for our students. The performances were amazing! In December, we hosted a Ramblewood Bazaar, as the community was given the opportunity to sell items they never expected to find. Our parking lot was fully occupied with booths and buyers from everywhere. Thank you to our PTO for coordinating all of these events in the past couple of months. Coach Alvaro Picado, P.E. teacher, coordinated field day for all grade levels. The students had a ball! We have many more exciting events planned for the 3rd quarter! We can’t wait to share them with you.

oin the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Parkland and Coral Springs to celebrate those touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action for lifesaving change. The American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life of Parkland and Coral Springs invites the communities of Parkland, Coral Springs, Margate and Coconut Creek to attend the annual event on March 7, 2020 at the Sportsplex at Coral Springs. The Relay for Life movement continues to be the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, with 2.5 million participants globally uniting to save lives from cancer. “Our theme is ‘Imagine a World Without Cancer,’” said event co-lead Megan Mila. “Over 50 teams and more than 500 participants will join together to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer.” Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington, in 1985, Relay for Life events around the world have raised nearly $6.5 billion to help ACS attack cancer. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the Parkland and Coral Springs event lasts five hours and empowers the community to take a stand against cancer. The March 7th event starts at 5:00pm and takes place on the football field next to Coral Glades High School. ACS estimates that one out of three people in the US will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Funds raised help ACS fund and conduct breakthrough research and give

e are excited to tell you all about our experience as a Lighthouse Demonstration School! In 2019, Park Trails Elementary was selected as 1 of 11 schools in Broward County to implement a pilot program involving personalized learning for students. This focus on personalized learning has our teachers developing individual playlists specifically designed to provide learning opportunities that target our students’ individual needs. Our teachers utilize student data on an ongoing basis to continuously modify their instructional strategies and alter resources based on student needs. Through our work as a Lighthouse School, we have seen our students make double digit learning gains, we are closing achievement gaps for struggling students and we are providing acceleration and enrichment for

cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support. Last year’s Relay for Life of Parkland and Coral Springs raised more than $110,000 to help ACS save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. Event co-lead Mike Fiorello has been involved in Relay for Life for many years and now walks to remember his son Adam, who lost his battle with a rare pediatric cancer in 2016. Recognizing and honoring cancer survivors and their caregivers is his priority. “Our goal is to host over 100 cancer survivors at the event. The opening ceremony will include a special Survivors Lap. Survivors and their caregivers will also enjoy a complimentary dinner. After sunset, we light Luminarias to remember those we have lost, to celebrate cancer survivors, and to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone.” Relay for Life of Parkland and Coral Springs is supported by many local businesses and organizations. This year’s sponsors include Memorial Cancer Institute, AutoNation, Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, Coldwell Banker, Coral Springs Medical Center, Supreme Lending, Burie Group at Morgan Stanley and Parkland Veterinary Hospital, among others. While being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of

64

injury and death in children ages one (1) to four (4) years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. Here are some ideas to start with: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the easiest and most important water safety conversation to have with your child/children. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out and/or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing in the water to experience the sensation. Remember Water Safety • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is: an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments - Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level - Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water Environments - Do not deactivate alarms - If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances

- Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use - Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm - Do not deactivate alarm - Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques - Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training - Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained - 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health 954.759.7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy 954.346.1774 • American Heart Association 1.800.242.8721 • American Red Cross 1.800.RED.CROSS Community Education Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central 954-357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County 954-467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, 954-377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County.
