Dear Readers,

Welcome to our first edition of Sports & Activities Directory, for 2019! I hope that you have all recovered from the holiday madness and are ready to take on the new year with a positive frame of mind, making this your best year ever! Each year brings something new; changes are inevitable and are often out of our control. As I anticipate the year ahead, I know that I will be facing some changes myself. My eldest recently turned 21, while my baby just celebrated his 18th birthday, I am now the mother of two adults and it seems to have happened in the blink of eye! As my son prepares to graduate high school and enter into the next phase of his life, I find myself with mixed emotions as I face the next phase of mine. It’s a proud yet fearful time for a parent to watch their child spread their wings and fly out into the big, wide world, it’s the moment we step back and wonder if we did enough for them. “Have we prepared them for this?” “Can they handle this without me by their side, or more like, can I handle it without them by mine?” Three things that I have learned from past experiences, is to stop trying to control what can’t be controlled, trust in the universe and embrace the change. Remember to stop and enjoy the view now, because it does change. We are blessed to live in an amazing community that is truly geared towards family life, it’s the reason so many of us moved here in the first place! Take the time to enjoy your surroundings and everything that they may offer! The City of Cooper City and the Town of Davie have a plethora of fun, exciting events coming up, such as Davie’s 82nd Orange Blossom festival, in February, and the Cooper City Founder’s Day festivities, in March. These are both terrific opportunities to spend the day as a family, mingling with your friends, neighbors and fellow residents, while also taking advantage of our incredible winter climate. Speaking of the remarkable climate at this time of year, while the rest of the country is hunkering down and facing icy cold temperatures and snow shoveling, we in South Florida are fortunate to have crystal clear blue skies and the comfort of wearing shorts and tees most days! Our picturesque coastline is the envy of the nation, and here it is, right on our doorstep, for us to enjoy year-round! Where else in the country can you comfortably spend a day at the beach, in February? A short car ride can transport your family to silky white sands and clear turquoise waters, it’s a piece of paradise that is easy to overlook when you don’t see it on a day-to-day basis. Plus, a family photo on a beach, in February, makes for a great Facebook post, not that we would EVER want to make any of our out-of-state/country friends envious! I hope that you enjoy this issue of Sports and Activities Directory, and that you find it a useful tool for planning your family’s activities. Don’t forget to start thinking about your young ones’ summer camps, take a look at our Spring/Summer Camp Preview section and start planning now! Meanwhile, I urge you to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible while the glorious weather is here. Perhaps you may take a picnic to the beach, or to one of our lovely parks, and relish in your family time. Remember, life is ever-changing, so take the time to sit back and appreciate the view as it is today.

My very best to you,

Hello Davie Residents,

8

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful start to the new year! 2019 is sure to be another amazing year in “Cowboy Town”, Davie, Florida. There are many fabulous projects underway throughout the Town of Davie, such as the much anticipated new Fire Station 86 and the Community Center at Shenandoah Park, which will open early this year; a new playground will be installed at Reflections Park as well. I would like to personally invite everyone to join the Town of Davie and me, as we host the 82nd Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo on February 22nd, 23rd and 24th. As always, we have a great lineup of activities, including: live music, performances, vendors and more! The festivities will begin at 1:00pm on Friday, February 22nd, with the Orange Blossom James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, at the Davie Golf and Country Club. The scramble format tournament can only accommodate 144 golfers, so please be sure to register early, as the tournament is likely to fill up quickly; proceeds from the tournament will help benefit youth golf in Davie. Following the golf outing, the merriments will continue at the Old Davie School House, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Join us for a kick off concert featuring the classic rock cover band, RemaDee. On Saturday, February 23rd, the festival grounds at Davie Town Hall, along Orange Drive, will open at 9:00am. The annual parade will begin at 10:00am and will travel south of Davie Road, from SW 39th street to Orange Drive, and will then make its way west to Rodeo Way, finishing off at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Following the parade, we will award the parade winners and begin the lineup of live music and performances. The festival is scheduled from 9:00am – 6:00pm on Saturday, February 23rd, and from 9:00am – 5:00pm on Sunday, February 24th. The Davie Women’s Club will also be hosting the Annual Strawberry Festival in the Women’s Club building, located at the corner of Orange Drive and Rodeo Way, in the middle of the festival grounds. As always, the Weekley Brothers will be presenting the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo at 7:30pm on Saturday, February 23rd, and at 2:00pm on Sunday, February 24th. I can’t wait to see everyone in “Cowboy Town” during one of my favorite yearly events! The Town of Davie offers numerous events throughout the year for our wonderful residents. The 2nd Annual Touch-a-Truck will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, from 10:00am – 1:00pm. The first hour of the event will be free of horns and sirens for children who are sensory sensitive. On Saturday, April 20th, from 9:00am – 12:00pm, the Annual HippityHoppity Egg Hunt will take place at Bamford Sports Complex. We are all so excited about the new Davie Jazz Festival coming to town on Sunday, April 28th. This new event at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds will feature several jazz musicians, local artists and vendors. When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember, whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, your Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family to enjoy. For more information on any Town of Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

AROUND TOWN

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 26 | Februar y - April 2019

Dear Neighbors,

10

I hope that everyone had a great start to the new year. We are very fortunate to live in a city where neighbors help neighbors, and government is joined by community and religious institutions to affect a positive impact on those in need. On any given day in Cooper City, we may see one neighbor pulling back garbage carts for the family next door, whose trash was picked up earlier that day. It is also not uncommon to receive a knock on the door in the evening from a volunteer in the Cooper City COP (Citizens on Patrol) program because they noticed that someone’s garage door was open. This kind of overt generosity and these random acts of kindness help to make us and keep us, “Someplace Special.” It is precisely this type of infectious benevolence that needs to be recognized. Potential Church, led by Pastor Danny Fernandez and his team of philanthropic missionaries, have come through in big ways for our community. The compassion and humanitarianism of this group deserves special acknowledgement for what they have accomplished. Danny has organized volunteers in the city for park restorations, pre-hurricane preparations and post-hurricane cleanup. While the coordination and generosity of this organization has always been impressive, they took it to the next level this past holiday season, as they joined us to make sure that one Cooper City family received a Christmas to remember in their time of need. When illnesses caused a young family to fall on hard times, they reached out to the City Commission for assistance. As fortune would have it, an unrelated donation of toys left at our fire station was secured by our Recreation Department for the four children of this family. While connecting the family with our local community partners, such as Hope Outreach Center and 211 Broward, we believed that some additional holiday magic was in order; enter our friends at Potential Church, who immediately agreed to help. The team showed up with food, gifts, smiling faces and holiday cheer, to help the family through the season; they did more than just give presents to the children, they restored hope to the entire family. This family now knows that they are living amongst friends and that their city is, indeed, “Someplace Special.” Speaking of “kudos,” recognition belongs to our Senior Advisory Board, in conjunction with our Senior Programs Department of Recreation. On January 12th, they brought us the 4th Annual Senior Lifestyle Expo, which was held at Cooper City High School. The showcase of senior activity programs, products, services and resources, provided senior residents a venue for connecting with service and program providers. Residents learned more about available resources and activities, and were able to share their desires regarding program enhancements. We have a lot to learn from our senior residents and we welcome their input and participation in Cooper City events. We encourage everyone to contact us with ideas and suggestions about how we may improve our senior programs. Give us a call us at (954) 434-4300, #255. Also, please take the opportunity to visit the Cooper City Pool & Tennis Center for Open Play Chess, every Saturday, from 9:00am ¬¬¬to 11:00am. Participants will have a chance to sit across from me during a one-on-one match every third Saturday, for the Mayor’s Chess Challenge (Hint: your best strategy is to distract me from chess by asking questions about your city). Additionally, you are welcome to join us as we host mayors from across the county, at the Mayors’ Countywide Chess Challenge, on Saturday, February 9th. Everyone is invited to come out and play, watch, learn or chat. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you there. You are well advised to visit the Events section of this publication to view our full schedule of upcoming events.

t’s not often an opportunity presents itself for a Broadway legend to come to a local performing arts studio and work with young performers; but that’s exactly what took place this past November. Adam Pascal, known for originating the role of Roger in Rent for both the musical and movie, playing the role of Shakespeare in Something’s Rotten, and most recently seen on Broadway in Pretty Woman the Musical, traveled to south Florida to help develop the next generation of Broadway stars. A full day of events was available to students from Broadway Kids Studio, located in the Ridge Plaza in Davie. The first event was a four-hour master class, where Mr. Pascal gave one-on-one critiques on their musical selections. He focused his feedback on ensuring these young performers understood their character’s motivation and portrayed a believable story through their vocal performance. Students and master class observers had the opportunity to ask questions, take notes, and get autographs. “Having the opportunity to work one-on-one with such a highly recognized performer gave me more insight. Adam Pascal was so great to work with. He had us sing through our pieces multiple times to make sure we implemented the objectives. He was so kind and humble and I’m so extremely grateful to have been able to participate in such an amazing master class,”

said Zach Poore, a high school Senior, who is pursuing a musical theater degree in the Fall. Following the master class was a pre-concert VIP meet and greet allowing participants to spend time with Mr. Pascal in a more informal setting. The day ended with an intimate concert where students shared the stage with the one and only Adam Pascal. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was realized by all those who were lucky enough to secure a spot in this sold out event. Mr. Pascal was also blown away by local high school Sophomore, Mariangeli Collado, who he provided with the following feedback, “…performed perfectly, I would not not change a thing.” Regardless of experience or ability, every student gained valuable insight and memories. Maisy Surman, a high school sophomore said, “My best experience was getting to sing with him. He also taught us about his experiences in theater and film. Those tips really influenced me to chase my dreams and pursue what I love. It was great. “ Mr. Pascal emphasized to live in the moment and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, to seize the day. “No day but today” -Jonathan Larson

hile being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of injury and death to children from 1 to 4 years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. PARENTS NEED TO TALK TO THEIR CHILD ABOUT WATER SAFETY. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO START WITH: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing to experience the sensation. REMEMBER WATER SAFETY • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments • Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level • Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water

ENVIRONMENTS • Do not deactivate alarms • If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances • Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use • Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm • Do not deactivate alarm • Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques • Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training • Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained • 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health (954) 759-7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy (954) 346-1774 • American Heart Association 1(800) 242-8721 • American Red Cross 1(800) RED-CROSS COMMUNITY EDUCATION Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central (954) 357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County (954) 467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, (954) 377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward: Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. Why Doesn’t My Child Listen to Me? And What Can I Do About It? By Dr. Dovid Kirzner and Dr. David Yudell

“D aniel! Daniel!! Daniel!!! Where are you?!” “Mom, I’m coming! What do you want?!”

“It’s about time! How many times do I have to call your name for you to come here? When I call you, I expect that you listen immediately!” “Mom, you’re so annoying! I was in middle of playing Fortnite with my friends! And no, I did not walk the dog, clean my room, or throw out the garbage; I’ll get to my chores later!” “Daniel! I’ve had enough with your utter disrespect and disregard for the house rules! You’re grounded from using any electronics for the next two weeks!” Does this parent-child interaction sound remotely familiar? If you find yourself engaging in similar interactions with your child, what distressing thoughts and emotions do you experience during these exchanges? When this interaction occurs prior to sending your child off to school, how do you feel about yourself while working or grocery shopping in preparation for dinner? When this interaction occurs prior to bedtime, what thoughts cross your mind when you finally manage to retire for the night? According to Dr. Russel Barkley, many ineffective, conflictual parent-child interactions are due to The Coercive Behavior Cycle in which parents and children often engage. This pattern of communication involves parents’ increased display of irritation and annoyance towards their children for their continued noncompliance. Ultimately, parents force their children to comply through physical intimidation, making threats, or raising their voice. Alternatively, parents may surrender to their children’s defiant noncompliance and complete the task themselves. When responding to our children accordingly, we inadvertently reward their negative behaviors and model the notion that defiance pays off!

In an effort to break this cycle, we first have to refrain from acquiescing to our children’s noncompliance. Therefore, when making a request to your children plan for them to either comply or experience a negative consequence. It is okay to give them an extra chance or an extra moment to respond, but avoid asking more than twice. Lastly, when you do tell them the consequence, keep it reasonable and follow through. This is a major downfall that many parents face – over punishing or empty threats. Another concept to consider involves checking in with oneself prior to asking your children to do something. Consider whether you have the energy to follow through and if you have a consequence planned. Both concepts are very important to consider so you do not walk into a situation ill prepared. Alternatively, you may want to make a smaller request that can be handled with less chance for failure. Creating appropriate consequences takes planning, experience, help or all three. (to be continued…) We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrKirzner@DrYudell.com or DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

Nova High’s Arts Program Inspires Creative Thinkers of Tomorrow “W

hen I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge.” -Einstein Even Albert Einstein, the mathematical and scientific genius that he was, understood the importance of creativity in his work. In fact, some of the most profound human advancements were made by people at play—like Columbus, when he realized that the earth was round; and Newton, when he discovered gravity. At Nova High School, creativity and play are embraced and integrated into an academically rigorous arts program, which incorporates a growing array of creative classes and clubs for students to participate in. Classes offered include 2D and 3D Art, Theatre, Band, Culinary Arts, and Journalism—as well as a new addition this year, Creative Photography. Each course gives students the opportunity to express their creative sides in a way that can benefit them both academically and personally. “Students are not only taught to tap into that creativity, but to also cultivate it. This translates to other aspects by allowing them to see out of the box, be confident in their creations and see the world in color rather than just black and white,” said

By Corinne Debacher

Drididi Byrd, the school’s theatre teacher and director. Throughout the year, students enrolled in creative courses and clubs receive hands-on experiences through project-based learning. The 2D and 3D art students work on personal portfolios which they get to display and sell at an annual Arts Night event in the spring. The theatre class and drama club have worked tirelessly to put on a Broadwayquality performance of Aladdin, which will open in February. Creative photography and mural club students work hand-in-hand to add life to Nova’s halls, by designing and creating intricate murals on building walls. Each project culminates in a final product that students can proudly display and share with the entire student body. By combining academic concepts with the freedom to play and discover creatively, Nova’s students have the opportunity to experience greater learning by exploring education from a more holistic approach. “Creativity allows for students to find various ways to process information, as well as have an understanding to the philosophical and unique sides of content,” adds Byrd. “It allows them to form opinions and create based on their own understanding. It helps with self-confidence and creates a platform that encourages expression.”

Senioritis is a condition that tends to affect the

motivation of high school seniors. Once college applications are complete and plans for their futures are in motion, students may begin to slack off. Parents may find themselves battling with their children to stay on track. So, what’s a parent to do? Clear Expectations: Be clear that you expect the same drive and motivation this year, as you did in previous years. Communicate your expectations of their grades. Be Aware: From projects and finals, to AP exams, a student’s senior year is full of challenges and responsibilities. Keep track of these hefty requirements and bring them up in conversation, over time. Communication: Open communication between parents and children is essential. Talk about their schedules, requirements, hopes and fears. Let them know that you are there for them. A good supportive conversation beats a lecture any day. Problem Solve: Instead of using threats and fear tactics, find ways to help them improve their problemsolving techniques. Encourage them to create an interesting and successful senior year—one that they can carry with them as they move forward, towards their dreams. Be Supportive: Throughout your child’s senior year, your encouragement and support will help launch them in the direction of a successful future. Senior year is your child’s opportunity to strengthen their skills, broaden their experiences, and prepare for the challenges of life ahead. Parents shouldn’t ignore slides in grades or skipping of classes. Start by explaining the serious consequences that could occur, and encourage them to follow through with the same dedication that they have always put forth. It is also important to recognize that you have been a part of this long journey, too. Therefore, you may be experiencing signs of burnout yourself. So, hang in there, and, remember, your child will soon be a high school graduate!

SCHOOLS American Heritage, Archbishop McCarthy and St. Thomas. Many of our students grow to become Salutatorian and Valedictorians of their high school. This past year, Apple Tree inaugurated a STEM Lab and introduced smart board technologies to our students. We encourage students to create their own architectural designs to build different structures in class. Technology continues to grow in the school and all students use lap tops in class to work on assignments. At Apple Tree, we strive on helping the student develop character. Our community outreach program allows our students to give back to the community thru fundraisers for those in need or those suffering from natural disasters. Service Cords are given to our students for their efforts throughout their middle school years. The school also offers a variety of after school programs. Middle school students may begin to look different and bit older than what you are used to, but they are still young and vulnerable, and want and need adult guidance. The key is they want it in their own timing and on their terms. Our teachers are accessible for every student, every day. Our Middle School emphasizes on individualism and combats the messages of conformity and materialism that are all too prevalent in our world today. Our staff is always here to offer a word of encouragement or a helpful suggestion to our students. Because our class sizes are small, students become part of a family and learn to respect one another. n January, the Peer Counselors of Pioneer Middle School looked forward to the arrival of Mondays, as they welcomed a favorite guest speaker: Ms. Kim Kelleher. Previous students remembered her, while new additions to the class got to participate in a life-changing experience targeting stress, anxiety, and suicide prevention. By doing fun, inclusive activities, the class was able to better understand the reasons for their own inner stress and stress in others. One of the activities involved Styrofoam cups; each student took a cup and wrote one reason for their own stress on it. Once the whole class had cups, one person tried to balance all of them in their own hands—symbolizing how hard it is to balance our lives with so many things causing inner strain. Many students were extremely touched by this realization, coming out of the experience with open eyes to the causes of stress related to themselves and those around them. Malia Lahey, one of the new 7th graders, first met Ms. Kelleher this year. “She’s really inspirational and helpful to kids all around Broward County,” she

said. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, in 2015, about 3 million teens, ages 12 to 17, had at least one major depressive episode that year. These statistics show how important Ms. Kelleher’s presentation is. Malia wasn’t the only student touched by the presentation and activities. Ms. Kelleher travels to many schools to teach Peer Counselors how to notice signs of stress and suicidal thoughts in peers. By teaching more kids how to spot and prevent suicidal thoughts or actions, help can be provided to students who need it. “I love my job and I think it is so important to teach students about depression and mental health issues, so that they realize that they are not alone and that there is help available. Sometimes students feel so alone and they feel as if nobody will understand what it is they are going through,” said Ms. Kelleher, when asked about her role as a school speaker. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Ms. Kelleher—along with her listeners¬— believes that her classes can truly help to save lives.

Celebrating Ms. Pamela Brown: Art Teacher of the Year!

n the campus of Nova Blanche Forman Elementary, you will find an exceptional art program led by an art teacher like none before. Pamela Brown has implemented a vision of how to use her art program to develop a love of art in her students, while also giving back to the community through her countless projects. In recognition of her hard work and dedication, Pam has recently been named the Florida Elementary Art Teacher of the Year and the Southeast Regional Elementary Art Teacher of the Year. We are so proud of all of Pam’s accomplishments and are very fortunate to have her spread her love of art to our Nova Blanche Forman students. Some of Ms. Brown’s programs and accomplishments include: Souper Bowl of Caring – Ms. Brown initiated and coordinated our participation in this national event, where our school donated $10,100 in cash, 2,400 food items and 550 pounds of food to our local food bank over the years. Art students also toured the food bank facility and interviewed workers and stakeholders. Subsequently, they illustrated and published a pamphlet for other students. In 2011, Nova Blanche Forman and Feeding South Florida were recognized by Broward County Schools as the Partnership of the Year. Empty Bowls Event – Ms. Brown contacted and partnered with the Miami Dolphins. They sent 3-6 players each year to work with students making ceramic bowls, which were then sold in support of local hunger issues. Good Deed Drive – As a follow-up to the food drive each year, Ms. Brown designed and carried out a school-wide drive of student good deeds. Along with the concept of showing care, the students submitted a signed coupon describing each good deed accomplished. A running tally was posted in the cafeteria throughout the month of February. Pinwheels for Peace – Ms. Brown initiated and carried out school-wide participation in this annual international art installation, on the International Day of Peace. Buddy Bench – Ms. Brown took the lead to raise funds and awareness for school bullying and school violence. Via the funding secured, Ms. Brown was able to have the Buddy Bench installed on the playground. The Buddy Bench is a tool that students can use to help combat loneliness and create meaningful friendships.

By: Russell W. Schwartz, Principal, Nova Blanche Forman Elementary School

Peace Pole – Ms. Brown secured funding and installed a 10-foot cedar pole to promote peace. Students are currently designing ceramic tiles, which will be used to create the pole and a surrounding peace garden. National Board Certified Teacher – Ms. Brown became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2007. Artist-in-Residence – Ms. Brown was awarded a $10,000 grant from Broward Cultural Division, resulting in a 10’ x 40’ ceramic mural produced by the student body. Learn and Serve – Ms. Brown was awarded a $5,000 grant for three consecutive years. This grant allowed students to create art related to the Souper Bowl of Caring, Empty Bowls and more. Student art exhibits - Throughout the year, Ms. Brown highlights our students’ artwork and exhibits it in the school board building, local museums, online and in rotating exhibits throughout our campus. Congratulations to Pamela Brown for being named the Southeast Elementary Art Teacher of the Year. Pam is one of the many reasons Nova Blanche Forman continues to be an amazing educational facility in Broward County. Follow Pamela Brown on Twitter, @NBFgallery.

t Griffin Elementary, learning is not only confined to the classroom. Our Environmental Center, located on campus, contains diverse flora and fauna¬—many of which are native to Florida. Our Eco-Patrol leader, Mrs. Jacque Sanchez, along with our 4th and 5th grade Eco-Patrol students, has created informational blurbs about our exclusive foliage. While strolling through the nature area, students find QR codes by trees, plants, and shrubs. Using their iPads, they are then able to click on the code, accessing important information about the foliage. In many areas throughout the center, students have planted foliage to attract butterflies. These plants all have QR codes, allowing students to view the metamorphic cycle of the butterflies as part of their science instruction. Additionally, there is a vegetable garden located within the Environmental Center, consisting of raised beds available for planting. Our P.E. teacher, Mrs. Betsy Norrell, takes advantage

By: Debbie Chmura

of this resource each year by guiding her P.E. students through the exciting process of planting a vegetable garden. This year, students planted seeds of tomatoes, kale, carrots, cabbage, and lettuce. They care for the seeds during P.E. class, each Friday. Why in P.E., on Friday, you ask? At our school, Specials teachers address science standards each week on Science Friday, covering the Life Science standards—involving plants, their structure, and their growth. This challenging process all started with a few seeds in some pots. Students worked vigorously, preparing the soil and transferring the germinating seedlings to beds. They then tended the garden—tilling the soil, weeding, and watering. Finally, the students were able to harvest their hard-earned produce, sampling the various goodies they had grown. Griffin’s outside classroom is an annual treat that our students may look forward to—talk about a hands-on science activity!

ave you heard about Fox Trail’s awesome Student Lighthouse Team? Some people may think that a lighthouse team only discusses lighthouses; however, this is a group whose focus is leading students through synergy and teamwork. The 2018-2019 Fox Trail Student Lighthouse Team is a group of sixteen student “liaisons” that help connect students with the adult leadership team at Fox Trail. We were officially introduced at our SAC meeting this past November. Since then, we have been dedicated to planning school-wide projects, creating action teams, and learning how to be effective leaders. Meetings are one of the most important things when it comes to bringing our Student Lighthouse Team members together. We meet regularly to discuss future projects based on students’ ideas and our school’s needs. We have an agenda; our notetaker records minutes; and our time keeper keeps us on track—all of these things help keep our meetings organized. The Student Lighthouse Team is very similar to Fox Trail’s Lighthouse Team— which is comprised of teachers, administrators, and parents. Both teams focus on improving academics and growing leadership at Fox Trail, and always strive to create an environment that inspires learning. This year, Fox Trail’s Student Lighthouse Team will be recruiting other students for several “action teams”. These action teams will support school leadership projects, like Leadership Day. We want to ensure that each of our students will have the opportunity to become leaders. The Lighthouse Team at Fox Trail is currently working on projects to support all of our students. Our hallways were renamed with encouraging names that incorporate the Seven Leadership Habits. For example, one hallway has been

renamed “Win-Win Way” to remind students of habit four, “Think Win-Win.” We also plan to create murals and motivational quotes for the walls in our school. These murals will promote leadership and encourage students to remember the Seven Habits. We are working to create buddy programs between students, and are pairing classes for technology help as well. Projects like these can benefit everyone in our school by inspiring them to be strong and independent leaders. The Student Lighthouse Team is going to be busy this year! We plan to visit other elementary school Student Lighthouse Teams in the area, so that we may see them in action and learn how to be even more effective. It will be a challenge, but the entire student body at Fox Trail is ready. All the students at Fox Trail are great leaders and we are ready to “Begin with the End in Mind”, while working hard to accomplish our goals.

t’s 9:50 in the morning and the students are preparing themselves for the day ahead. One student switches the lights off in the classroom so that his classmates can see the projection from the whiteboard. Another student checks her gym shoes before moving into her “spot.” Three children spread their arms out to measure their space, ensuring that they don’t bump into one another once the action begins. A few students begin giggling before a classmate reminds them that they need to have their “listening ears” on, or they won’t be able to hear the instructions. Today the students are getting ready to do a fast-paced guided dance, which focuses on their gross-motor learning skills. It is GoNoodle time in Ms. Barney’s class, and the kindergartners are prepared to move! The teachers and staff at Nova D. Eisenhower recognize the importance of regular physical activities. Throughout the kindergarten wing of the school, you can hear different GoNoodle activities. GoNoodle (www. gonoodle.com) is a research-based website that gets kids moving with short interactive activities. The events range from 60 seconds to 20 minutes and cover a wide variety of interests, ranging from quiet mindfulness activities to quick tempo Zumba dance routines. Research shows that children benefit from regular physical activities that emphasize flexibility, endurance and strength. During physical

activities, students have an opportunity to bond, socialize, learn sportsmanship, and support the development of pro-social development skills. While physical activity is excellent for everyone, it is particularly crucial for a young child’s growth and development. It is during the first five years of their lives that they develop habits which they will carry with them into adulthood. Students are improving their movements, balance, and coordination. Kindergartners are discussing breathing techniques with each other and explaining their favorite yoga poses on the playground. Children who typically don’t raise their hands are giving their opinions about which activity the class should do on GoNoodle. These days, with the need to emphasize academics, a reduction in child-centered play and recess is occurring in schools. We sometimes forget that “play” is essential in the development of physical, social, academic and emotional skills in young children, and that the physical components of play are crucial skills that can be addressed daily through only a few minutes of movement. Something phenomenal is occurring in kindergarten—an improvement in social skills, self-esteem, confidence, and overall health! Yay, GoNoodle! Now let’s get up and get moving!
