Dear Readers, Welcome to our first edition of Sports & Activities Directory, in 2020! I hope that your year is off to a healthy, happy and prosperous start! 2019 brought many changes for me, personally, with my youngest graduating from high school and the transition from our family home of 20 years to a brand new home. As I was decluttering and packing up two decades of my life, I came across boxes and boxes of photos (you know… from the days before digital cameras and smart phones)! As I laughed and cried my way through the memories of many special moments captured, I couldn’t help but feel grateful that we had dedicated so much time engaging in family events and just being together. I encourage you all to cherish the simple moments; when your little one walks with you hand in hand, when they insist on bringing you a flower from the garden every few minutes (that was my little guy), or when they clamber up on your lap (because only yours will do)! Simple moments and gestures like these really are the things that make life sweet. On the note of embracing the ‘right now’ in your life, I hope that you are making the most out of the wonderful outdoor activities and events available at this time of the year. We are blessed to live in an amazing community that is truly geared towards family life; it’s the reason so many of us moved here in the first place! Make sure to take the time to enjoy your surroundings and everything that they offer. The City of Cooper City and the Town of Davie have an abundance of fun, exciting events coming up, such as Davie’s 83rd Orange Blossom festival, in February, and the Cooper City Founder’s Day festivities, in March. These are both terrific opportunities to spend the day making memories with your family, while also taking advantage of our incredible winter climate. Also, don’t forget to start thinking about your young ones’ spring and summer camps. Take a look at our Spring/Summer Camp Preview section. Keeping our kids entertained and their young minds alert has never been easier! We’ve done the research for you and have found the best summer camps around. Consider early registration, as camps fill up quickly and there are often discounts offered for early signups. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Sports and Activities Directory, and that you find it a useful tool for planning your family’s activities. Perhaps you may take a picnic to the beach, or to one of our lovely parks, and delight in your family time. Remember, life is ever-changing, so take the time to sit back and appreciate the view as it is today. My best to you, Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

8

Happy 2020! I hope that everyone is having success sticking to their New Year’s resolutions. The Town of Davie has an exciting year planned for all of our wonderful residents. It is once again time for one of Davie’s long standing traditions, the 83rd annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo! The Town of Davie will host the event, beginning on Friday, February 28, to Sunday, March 1. The festival will kick off at 1:00pm, on Friday, February 28, with the Orange Blossom Golf Classic, at the Davie Golf and Country Club; proceeds from the tournament benefit youth golf in Davie. Following the tournament, the fun shall continue at the Old Davie School House, with the Kickoff Concert, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm; it will feature classic rock cover band, RemaDee. The festival grounds in front of Davie Town Hall and along Orange Drive will open at 9:00am, on Saturday, February 29. The annual parade will begin promptly at 10:00am, and will travel south on Davie Road from SW 39th Street, to Orange Drive. It will then make its way west, to Rodeo Way, finishing at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The parade will feature numerous floats, walking groups, marching bands and our Orange Blossom Pageant winners! After the parade, we will award our winners on the main stage, followed by a lineup of performances and live music. Festival activities are scheduled from 9:00am to 6:00pm, on Saturday, February 29, and from 9:00am to 4:00pm, on Sunday, March 1. The Davie Women’s Club will host the annual Strawberry Festival in the Women’s Club building, located on the corner of Orange Drive and Rodeo Way. The Weekley Brothers will once again present the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo at 7:30pm, on Saturday, February 28, and at 2:00pm, on Sunday, March 1. I can’t wait to see everyone in “Cowboy Town,” during one of my favorite yearly events! The Town of Davie offers numerous other events throughout the year to our residents. On Saturday, April 11, from 9:00am to 12:00pm, the annual Hippity-Hoppity Egg Hunt will take place at Bamford Sports Complex. The Pine Island pool will also host the annual Splash and Dash underwater egg hunt for Davie Residents (small fee). The second annual Davie Jazz Festival will be back at the Bergeron Rodeo on Sunday, April 18, from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. Registration for our Youth Basketball League will take place from March 3 to April 28, for children ages 3 to 15 year old. All games and practices are held at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center and the University School gymnasium. Participation in recreational programs and activities provides many benefits to youth, adults and seniors. Whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events, or recreation classes that interest you and your family, Davie has something for everyone to enjoy. As you browse through the Sports and Activities Directory, keep a lookout, as all of the programs provided by Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department begin with “Davie.” For more information on any Town of Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 30 | Fe br uar y - Apr il 2 0 2 0

Dear Residents of Cooper City:

10

It remains my position that the health, safety and welfare of the residents of Cooper City is the primary priority of my office. Safety, above all, is of utmost importance, taking precedence over all other city initiatives, programs and enterprises. We strive to ensure that our residents have the best law enforcement department patrolling Cooper City. In addition to curtailing criminal activity, our crime prevention unit provides our residents the information and tools necessary to instill in them a sense of vigilance and self-protection; including the opportunity to work with the deputies through the Citizen Observer Patrol program. It is with this emphasis on home security and the safety of our families that I strongly urge gun owners to exercise extreme caution when keeping firearms in the home. The staggering statistics on accidental shootings in the home are devastating. A child is shot every 17 hours. A gun is stolen every 26 minutes. In eight out of ten school shootings, the assailant obtained the gun from their home. Even one accidental shooting is one too many. With more than 500,000 guns in Broward County, the chances of accidents happening are far too great. The previous information was provided by The League of Women Voters of Broward, who spearhead the “Lock it Up!” program. Through their efforts, they have distributed 12,000 gunlocks, as they teach and promote gun safety. I applaud their efforts to protect children, reduce crime and save lives. It should be noted that your BSO also distributes gunlocks, when available, to attendees of their community programs. The City of Cooper City has been working on the Annual State of the City Address, which I typically deliver during the first quarter of each calendar year. To that end, it is my privilege to share just a few of the finer points of the upcoming presentation with you now: Finance delivered a fiscally responsible, balanced budget in September. They submitted for and received the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its FY 2019 Budget. Additionally, they received their 29th consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), for the preparation of the 2018 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Growth Management announced the opening of Cooper City Storage Plaza and Ranchette Isles. They anticipate the completion of Cooper Square; Royal Estates; the Nur-Ul-Islam school building and mosque expansions; the Sienna subdivision in Monterra; the 2-phase Chabad of SW Broward project and Monterra age-restricted apartments. Public Works boasts the award of our 37th consecutive TreeCity USA designation this past year. Additionally, they are credited with overseeing the development of Flamingo West Park, which opened this past May. Utilities completed the replacement of the complex computer system that controls the water and wastewater treatment plants; installed 5,400 electronic water meters; completed the Natalie’s Cove/Flamingo Townhomes drainage improvement project. They also implemented the WaterSmart mobile app and consumer portal, which I highly recommend, and successfully met all federal, state and local drinking water standards as described in the City’s 2018 Water Quality Report. Fire hosted our 12th Annual Cooper City-Davie Community Autism Awareness Day. The department welcomed five new CERT team members, delivered gifts to 651 children through the Santa program, certified 209 residents in CPR and awarded a $2,000.00 Firefighter scholarship. BSO asserts that The National Council for Home Safety and Security published a report, which ranked Cooper City in the top ten safest cities in Florida. Throughout 2019, BSO responded to over 30,000 calls for service with an average response time of approximately 2 minutes/10 seconds. We look forward to finalizing our BSO contract negotiations in the very near future. I am pleased to welcome our new Recreation Director, Stacie Weiss. Please join Stacie at the Cooper City events and programs listed in this publication. Visit www.coopercityfl.org to view the Calendar of Events. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year.

THE YEAR AHEAD WITH COOPER CITY COMMISSIONER G

JEFF GREEN

reetings sports fans, happy New Year! We are well into 2020, and I hope and pray that it has been a good year for all of you thus far. At this point, it’s probably safe to say that everyone has fallen into a nice rhythm as far as family, work, and school are concerned. It is imperative that we try to maintain a healthy balance of activities in our lives; overdoing it in some areas, while being deficient in others, could lead to challenges throughout the year. As a matter of fact, I would like to draw your attention to the word, “rhythm”. This word can simply be described as timed movement through space; an easy, connected path. When utilized properly, the presence of rhythm creates predictability and order. Have you ever been to a concert where everyone was moving in unison? Now, imagine being at that same concert, where some well-meaning people completely fell out of rhythm with the rest of the group! Timing, direction, and harmony are disrupted when this occurs; the desired outcome or effect

is lost. If we are not careful, this can and will happen in our daily lives. Therefore, we should strive to create a healthier balance of work and play in our everyday activities. With that in mind, consider this year as an election year at all levels; one that will determine the direction of our local communities, state, and nation. Regardless of your political affiliation, it is extremely important that we all exercise our right to vote! Your voice through your individual vote is one of the most significant rights that you hold as a citizen of this nation. At the moment, our nation is divided because we are out of rhythm with one another. For this reason, it is essential to remember that we are all stronger when we are together. Let us focus on the things that unite us, rather than those that divide us, as we begin strengthening our local communities. My continued commitment as an elected official will be to do my part in bringing our community together, so that it may be the best that it can be; however, this must be a collected effort of everyone that has a shared interest in enhancing our community. Again, Happy New Year, and may you and your loved ones have peace and prosperity throughout the year!

Ah, retirement. It was once viewed as the ultimate leisure destination. Exploring national parks in a motorhome; bingo nights at the community center; sending your grandkids generous checks for their birthdays; retirement was to be a handful of golden years, fully funded by a pension plan. These days, though, retirement is seen as something entirely different; we see it as a highly anticipated second season in life, filled with things we’ve put off for decades while punching a clock: exotic travel, family involvement, civic activity and philanthropy, passion projects, second careers, and more. Nevertheless, the jury is in: retirement is definitely not what it

used to be. The fact is, most Americans are severely underprepared for the financial demands of retirement. What many don’t understand in their youth, is that saving for retirement is a lifelong process and challenge. With rising health care costs and slow-growing wages, Americans are more in debt now than ever before. In today’s world, debt is so normalized, that we deem it acceptable. However, here at the Wellness Company, entrepreneurs envision the future a bit differently. We have seen the path paved to an uncertain future, and we’ve decided that it is not for us. Average is not a word in our vocabulary; it is simply unacceptable. We are fully prepared to face-off with lifetime debt. Our future is on the line, and it’s going to be anything but average. The Question is, What Will Your Retirement Look Like? A successful business can lead you to what you want at retirement age; the income to enjoy life. Without any investment you can create reliable residual income now, so that when it’s time to retire, you can do so in style. Our program will also benefit your entire family. By Staci Lee Schnell, M.S., C.S., LMFT

With Valentine’s Day coming up, now is a good

time to discuss some guidelines for maintaining long-term relationships. Marriage can be much like a roller coaster; it has its ups and downs, and sometimes it’s a wild ride that can be scary and amazing all at once. I hope that both you and your partner enjoy the ride of a lifetime together by adhering to these few key tips. First off, it is important that you always remember to take care of your own basic needs, as self-care is an extremely important factor in a healthy relationship. By eating right, exercising, and getting plenty of rest, you become better equipped to take on daily tasks that would otherwise seem burdensome. When you have a clear head and are happy, your self-esteem and confidence are boosted, which helps create a more pleasant environment for you and your partner. Of equal importance, never forget to say, “I love you.” When you’re in it for the long haul, you may sometimes forget to express these three simple words to your partner. However, by saying them out loud to one another, you reinforce the commitment you each made, and by doing so, provide each other with a deep sense of trust and empathy. By the same token, don’t forget the significance of human touch. Touching your partner regularly fuels the bond that you both share. By “staying in

touch” with one another, you can combat stress and promote a feeling of overall happiness within your relationship. Sometimes, a hug can convey the message your partner needs to hear the most, without you having to say anything at all. When it comes to vocally expressing gratitude and appreciation to your partner, an “I am proud of you,” or an “I admire you,” can go a long way. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is easy to neglect reminding your partner of all the little things that you are thankful for. Words of gratitude and appreciation encourage your partner and support a prospering relationship. In a perfect world, there would be no quarrels in relationships; however, arguments arise in the healthiest of unions. The main thing to remember, is to fight fair whenever a heated debate arises. By doing so, you avoid accusations and generalizations, and create a space for clear communication; this is crucial when dealing with disagreements. Lastly, couples who schedule “date nights” often in their routine, know that doing so is not a luxury, but rather, a necessity. Desire (which is an imperative aspect of any committed relationship) may fade as hormones, kids, work, and the stresses of life take over. By taking the time to reconnect physically and emotionally with your partner, you not only preserve your relationship, you lay down the groundwork for strengthening it, as well.

ooper City High School’s Academy of Fashion Marketing has begun planning the annual MET Gala fashion show, which will be held on Friday, February 28. This event has taken place for eight consecutive years, showcasing the creative talents of our students. The evening will consist of two parts, the MET Gala pre-party, followed by the fashion show. During the pre-party, guests can enjoy light snacks and refreshments while perusing artwork created by the school’s art club. The band and chorus will be performing a few pieces as well. Later in the evening, guests will be moved to the auditorium so that they may enjoy the themed fashion show portion of the event. “The theme our class decided on is decades, and this will be intertwined with a second theme of recycling and preserving the environment,” said Linda Snider, the Fashion Academy Advisor. This year, the show will be divided into four categories: the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and future. Each category will include clothing styles from that decade, and will focus on an environmental issue that occurred during that time period. Our school’s film classes will also be producing short films to appear before each category, shedding light on the environmental issue for that decade. “As soon as I took over the film classes, I knew that I wanted to get my AICE Media Studies kids involved, so that they could have an opportunity to showcase their talent,” said Ms. Flaten, the film teacher. Ms. Flaten added that this year’s theme is something that continues to be on the forefront of news and politics, and therefore, a subject that most have an opinion on. “I love how students have chosen this as an opportunity to pay homage to the past efforts and share their vision for the future in an artistic and creative way,” she said. This event is planned by the second level of the Academy of Fashion Marketing, a four-year program that students advance to as they progress through high school. The class, comprised of 15 eleventh graders, began planning this event at the start of the new school year. Mrs. Snider divided the class into committees based on their skills and attributes, allowing students to be more productive based on their talents. “Through planning the fashion show, I’ve gained real-world experience in how much teamwork and coordination it takes to plan and execute such a large-scale event,” said Emmie Leal. “It’s taught me life skills like planning budgets, contacting vendors, and hosting events; all of which are important experiences to have, especially if I want to continue in this career field.”

avie Elementary staff and students were quite busy during the first half of the 2019/2020 school year. Our wonderful teachers have been working diligently with the students on the Florida Standards. In addition to academics, students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular clubs and specials classes that are a part of their daily schedule. On Veteran’s Day, Tropical Elementary hosted veteran family members at a special lunch held with students. Also, the holidays encouraged the giving spirit from the Davie community, as volunteers from various charities helped with the annual bike giveaway/ holiday party, at Davie Elementary. The Children’s Charity Riders Motorcycle Club provided the bikes, and the Wings of Gold Club provided the food and entertainment. These organizations bring such joy and smiles to all of the children; each year they are showered with a fun-filled day of activities, food, a visit from Santa, and a new bike! Davie

Elementary was also the recipient of a very generous donation from the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, on Stirling and Pine Island Road. These funds will be put to good use for our students and school. Thank you, Wal-Mart! This year, the kindergarten students at Davie Elementary started a new program called i-Ready; an innovative program that provides engaging digital instruction based on the students’ individual diagnostic results. The goal of the students is to participate in i-Ready at home, each week, for a minimum of 45 minutes. On Monday, January 13th, Davie Elementary invited a special guest to help get our students excited about using i-Ready for the second half of the school year. Plory, from i-Ready, visited the students and all of the children and staff were very excited to meet her. Below is a picture of Plory with Assistant Principal, Mrs. Graber. Davie Elementary is very excited for all of our students to utilize i-Ready, and excel in 2020!

While being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of

66

injury and death in children ages one (1) to four (4) years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. Here are some ideas to start with: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the easiest and most important water safety conversation to have with your child/children. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out and/or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing in the water to experience the sensation. Remember Water Safety • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is: an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments - Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level - Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water Environments - Do not deactivate alarms - If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances

- Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use - Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm - Do not deactivate alarm - Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques - Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training - Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained - 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health 954.759.7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy 954.346.1774 • American Heart Association 1.800.242.8721 • American Red Cross 1.800.RED.CROSS Community Education Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central 954-357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County 954-467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, 954-377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. hen you think of literacy, does computer literacy come to mind? Well, it should! While the set of numbers above may seem meaningless and random, in binary code the ones and zeros are actually saying, “Hello!” Computer science has quickly become an important branch of learning that is consistently incorporated into lessons and activities at Nova Eisenhower Elementary (NEE). There was a special emphasis on computer science as NEE students across all grade levels celebrated computer science during Education Week, last December. This yearly initiative was designed to increase interest in computer science, and in partnership with Code.org, students engaged in block-based coding, an introductory form of computer programming. Intermediate classes partnered with their primary buddies and together completed an “Hour of Code,” by having a “Dance Party” on Code.org. Third grade students could be seen with kindergarten students jamming out to hits such as “Old Town Road” and “Starships,” while simultaneously completing lessons that required the use of block-based coding. “I enjoyed helping the kindergarten students learn to code by showing them how to use the mouse and how to drag and drop blocks to make the characters dance,” said Kaitlyn, an eight-year-old student in Ms. Stuart’s third grade class. A sense of pride was evident as students used mathematics, logic, and attention to detail to program chosen characters, in order to perform popular dances like the floss, dab, and zombie. The students enjoyed combining their love of music, dance, and computer science. Dr. Donna Parise, NEE’s technology specialist, also motivated students to code

by awarding prizes to students who completed the set of assigned lessons. “One of the lessons taught me about debugging, and I liked that it was a challenge to find the right blocks to use, to make the correct code. It can help me with computer problems in the future,” said Jenesa, an eight-year-old student in Ms. Welsh’s third grade class. On Twitter, teachers actively share pictures and videos of students participating in coding activities to show NEE families, and the entire BCPS community, how students collaborate and learn to code while having fun. Myles, an eight-year-old student in Mrs. Squier’s third grade class noted, “It’s important to learn how to code in school because when you get older, you can have a career creating your own games and apps.” Students have an opportunity to expand and apply their knowledge of computer programming by becoming a part of NEE’s Engineering Club. The club meets several times a week, and is comprised of third to fifth grade students who have demonstrated an interest in computer science. Dr. Parise and Dr. Debbie Prochaska, NEE’s STEM teacher, help students build and program VEX robots and compete in local robotics competitions. They also hope to encourage more girls to join what is traditionally a male dominated field of study. “I wish even more girls would learn how to code, because they can code just as well as boys. Your gender doesn’t matter,” said Shayla, a nine-year-old member of the Engineering Club, who is in Mrs. Becks’ third grade class. In the words of the late Steve Jobs, “Everyone should learn how to code, it teaches you how to think.” NEE students are certainly thinking, learning, and having fun at the same time.

lamingo Elementary is rich with tradition. Year after year, students proudly represent and research a country, then compete in grade-level Olympics. We have a Parade of Nations and sing the school song at the 5th grade opening ceremonies. While traditions will always have a place at Flamingo Elementary, it’s important to prepare students for the future. New and innovative opportunities are always in the forefront for our students. For example, last year, a Robotics team was formed. During the year, the team began exploring robotics with the assistance of some Western High School student mentors. This year, we added an additional robot and are looking forward to expanding this opportunity to include 4th grade students. Our goal by the end of the year, is to participate in a district competition. Also, this year, for the first time, Flamingo Elementary students will have the unique opportunity to learn about and participate in debate. They will be meeting weekly to learn the power of communication, both verbal and nonverbal. Students are practicing monologues and learning how to think quickly on their feet, generating arguments for hot topics, and learning to defend their positions. The goal this year is to compete in district wide competitions. Another new opportunity for students to benefit from this year, is becoming a member of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS). More than 100 students applied, and only a maximum of 30 will be chosen for this prestigious honor. Flamingo Elementary is one of only 178 elementary schools in the nation to have been granted a charter into this prominent organization. The requirements combine scholarship, responsibility, service, and leadership. NEHS students are planning several activities this year, including: service projects, donation drives, and a school beautification project.

Ecology club is another option for students to join. The Ecology Club is comprised of 5th grade students that have an interest in learning about the environmental issues that affect our planet. The club enables students to take a hands-on approach to making our school campus a greener place. Some of the activities that they engage in are maintaining our hydroponic garden, participating in our schoolwide recycling program, and acting as ambassadors to help others understand the importance of taking responsibility for our natural environment. Students also participate in planting native plants on our campus; it is a great place to grow! At Flamingo Elementary, we want to provide students with unique learning opportunities that go beyond the classroom. It is essential to not only focus on rigorous academics, but to also provide opportunities for students to find their passion as they continue their educational career.

n the age of technology and innovation, it is now more crucial than ever for students to be up to speed on the latest in computer science, engineering, critical thinking, and information literacy skills. Since 2015, Nova High School has been meeting that need by offering students an opportunity to learn the latest in 21st Century skills, through its Robotics and Coding program. Nova’s Robotics course gives students the chance to build real-world applicable robots and computers through the application of engineering and coding skills. Meanwhile, Coding, which is offered as an introduction to the AP-level course, as well as an after-school extracurricular activity, teaches students app development, website creation and other production skills. “Understanding computer science and basic engineering skills will make any person more marketable,” said Mr. Jesse White, Nova’s Robotics teacher and Coding club sponsor. “Coding is helping students be prepared for the use and skills needed in any work environment.” Through the program, students are seeing how valuable these skills can actually be in the real world. Last year, students in the Robotics and Coding program created the Nova Bus App, which lets students track their buses before and after school, and allows staff to more accurately and efficiently track student arrivals and departures. The app even won Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Congressional App Challenge, and students were nationally recognized for their achievement at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. This year, the program is partnering up with the NFL to design and develop an app for sponsors and VIP guests attending the upcoming 2020 Super Bowl game, in Miami.

Nova is also promoting STEM-based programs, like Robotics and Coding, through oncampus events and activities. In honor of National Computer Science Education Week and Code.org’s annual “Hour of Code” initiative, Nova held a STEM showcase where students and faculty could explore a variety of technological platforms, including online applications for coding via games, music, math, science and more. Visitors of the showcase had the opportunity to view the inside of a computer system, attempt to program a color sensitive mini robot called OZOBOT, try Magic Leap AR (augmented reality) glasses, and control student-built VEX robots used in class, as well as competition. Not only do these programs offer students advantages in high school, they also inspire them to pursue college and future careers in STEM. Junior Santiago Guttierez, who is President of Nova’s Coding Club, and plans to pursue a technology career in the military, said “STEM is growing more and more every day and the opportunities in this field are endless.” In today’s technology-driven society, STEM programs are ultimately preparing students for the future. Nova’s Coding and Robotics program is just one of the many innovative programs offered, giving students the skills and edge necessary to succeed in an ever-evolving workplace and world. “Understanding even the basics of how computers work will be critical in almost every job in the future, including: AI, self-driving cars, construction equipment, phone, and home security systems,” said Mr. White. “Our programs at Nova will expose students to have a solid foundation to move with the times and perhaps beyond.”

Afterschool Activities l

W

By Dr. Kelly Santandrea & Dr. David Yudel

ith the new year upon us, we find ourselves scrambling to get back into a routine of school, work and the rigor of our day-to-day lives. While many families are involved in after school activities, others have struggled to find the time or may not yet be convinced of the importance of afterschool programs. The value of participating in afterschool activities is, on a whole, often underestimated or misunderstood. The following article explores various aspects that should be considered when contemplating various activities and choosing the right one for your child and essentially your family. ACTIVITIES AND MENTAL HEALTH: One of the main concerns we hear from children and adults who are struggling with mood concerns or anxiety is the need to withdraw and isolate. It is not uncommon for individuals to avoid previously enjoyed activities or those that require extra effort or interpersonal interaction. Activity, whether it be physical or non-physical is what mental health professional utilize to promote behavioral activation. Essentially, our behavior impacts our thoughts and feelings. When we are engaged in activity, we are more likely to feel capable, have improved mood and self esteem than if we were to isolate ourselves at home. Activity also helps to distract unhelpful thoughts from increasing or intensifying. Years of research show that any type of activity, whether it be pleasurable or goal oriented, has an advantageous effect on mood. ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL SKILLS PROMOTION: The majority of afterschool activities require some form of social interaction and it is therefore accepted that social skills are put into action. While it is true that social interaction takes place at home amongst family members, engaging with individuals that are not as familiar to us, teach and strengthen social skills. Social interaction is an integral part of human functioning. Human beings in general do not and cannot live in isolation. Engagement in social interaction from a young age promotes healthy cognitive development, language development, and creativity. Children learn to navigate differences, problem solve, and find a place in the ever-changing world that provides some form of structure and consistency. When these skills are learned from an early age, the demands of adulthood are more manageable and are not as threatening.

SCHOOL PERFORMANCE: Years of research and school performance records support the notion that well-balanced afterschool activity engagement supports improved academic performance. Children and adolescents are much more likely to have improved classroom performance when they have an alternative source of engagement added to their weekly demands. Organized and well managed afterschool activities reduce involvement in risky behaviors that can have a direct impact on academic functioning. Alternative activities also serve as a way to “take a breather” from the demands of school and allow children to exercise their mind and bodies in different ways that are fun and engaging. One area that should also be monitored is overscheduling your child. Sometimes too much activity can create demand and stress that interferes with all aspects of our children’s lives. Be aware of increases in emotional outbursts, decreases in academic performance and or other changes in behavior when your child has multiple activities throughout the week. Finding the right activity for your child and your family is not as easy as it seems. Many factors need to be taken into consideration such as finances, time, availability, specific child needs, and interest. We highly recommend seeking support if you are struggling to find a good fit for your own child. This is not a one-size-fits-all process. Factors such as psychological functioning, physical capabilities, family dynamics, individual likes and dislikes, as well as timemanagement difficulties need to be considered. If you have noticed a change in your child’s mood or willingness to engage in activities as well as difficulties in academic performance or maintaining friendships, it is important to know when to reach out and what therapeutic options are out there to support your child and your family. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.
