Dear Readers, As summer comes to an end and the new school year begins, I can’t help but feel sentimental. The high school graduation of my son in May brought our family ready to face our next chapter. I made a bold decision to downsize our home of 19 years to one more manageable and conducive to fewer occupants. The last two months have been a whirlwind of emotions. I am so sad to leave the home that has seen my family through the years, but I am excited for everything that the future has in store for us. Although I am thrilled at the prospect of starting fresh and creating beautiful new memories with the ones that I hold dearest to my heart, there is still a part of me that is reminiscent of the experiences that made my old house a home. As I pack up 19 years of my life neatly into boxes, it occurs to me that possessions may come and go, but memorable moments last a lifetime. A lot of you will be greeted by change this year and I hope that you embrace it with open arms, because although change can be quite daunting at times, it almost always brings forth good things. Winston Churchill famously said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” It is my wish that you all may find the courage inside of you this year to be your best selves. Speaking of the best, it thrills me to inform you that the Broward County FCAT scores have been announced and the results for our local schools are excellent! Just as children work diligently throughout the year to ensure that their grades are well-maintained, teachers put forth unyielding dedication every single day so that our children are equipped to succeed. Thank you to all of the wonderful schools in the area, you are an inspiration to us all. Additionally, this year will be the 17th year that Sports & Activities Directory has served as a reliable resource for communities spanning all across West Broward County. There are no words to describe how proud I am of this significant achievement. I feel extremely privileged to be part of such an incredible community and I am so grateful to all of our city officials, schools, readers, contributors and advertisers; you have all helped make our directory what it is today. I hope that everyone enjoys this ‘Back to School’ issue and that you all find time to plan activities that will further connect you with your loved ones. Remember, the days may seem long but the years are short. Before you know it, your children will be graduating and embarking on their very own adventures. Be sure to spend the time you have together making memories they can carry with them wherever life may take them. My very best to you, Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

8

I hope that everyone is looking forward to another great summer in Cowboy TownI hope that everyone had a wonderful summer and is excited for the 20192020 School Year! As a former teacher, I know the importance of participation in extracurricular activities. Participation in recreational programming, youth sports, swim teams, dance classes, theater groups, etc., is just as important as academics are in child development. In fact, youth sports provide great health and social benefits to our children; some of the benefits include improved stamina, endurance, and flexibility, as well as building self-confidence, improving communication skills and encouraging teamwork. Our Town of Davie sports programs begin with Smart Start Sports, an introduction to team sports for children three to four years old. This is a great way to introduce your child to soccer, basketball, baseball and football (non-contact, of course), before they begin league play. Don’t miss your chance to participate in the upcoming Winter Soccer League and Smart Start Soccer. Registration will take place from August 12th – October 6th, for children ages three to fifteen years old. Also, it is my pleasure to introduce you to a new 3 vs. 3 Basketball League for children ages seven to twelve years old. This new league will allow children to continue developing their skills in the off-season of youth basketball. Registration is currently open through September 29th. The special events division is once again busy planning and implementing a wonderful lineup of events this fall. On August 3rd, the Town of Davie Auction will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Everyone will be able to bid on vehicles and other equipment that is being retired by the Town of Davie. On September 7th, the Davie Pro Rodeo will host one of my favorite Davie traditions at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds; join Weekly Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo Association for a night of competition and fun! The gates will open at 6:00pm and the performance will start at 7:30pm. Also, the Town of Davie will host the 2nd annual Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 28th, from 4:00pm – 8:00pm, at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The fun continues during the week of October 21st, when the Town of Davie celebrates Government Days by opening our doors to local schools, youth clubs and organizations, so that they may take a tour of Town Hall and meet with Town staff. Groups must preregister with our special events division by calling (954) 797-1181. On October 26th, join us at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds for some “spooktacular” fun at our annual Halloween Happenings event. Activities will include: a costume contest, games, youth entertainment, vendors, a pumpkin patch, a not-so-scary haunted house and the horse costume contest. On October 25th and 26th, the South Florida Cloggers will turn Robbins Lodge into a scary haunted house (entry fee applies). When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember: Whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family to enjoy. For more information on any Davie program, just call: (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

AROUND TOWN

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 28 | August - October 2019

Dear Neighbors,

10

This summer in Cooper City, we welcomed our newest and largest sports complex. On June 21st, we held the ribbon-cutting and grand opening celebration for Flamingo West Park. This 27-acre park, for which we broke ground in February of 2018, provides a plethora of outdoor recreational options for families to enjoy. Like our other two sports facilities, this park will serve as playing fields for our youth sports programs, recreational facilities, family get-togethers and public arenas where we will host Cooper City community events. With rentable pavilions, a community meeting room, free public Wi-Fi availability, walking trails, a fishing pier, a playground with ADA inclusive features, a concession stand and state-of-the-art playing fields, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Flamingo West Park; I hope that you’ll all come out and enjoy our incredible park throughout the year. Families and children in Cooper City welcome the start of the new school year with great enthusiasm and high expectations. Our “A” rated public schools, exceptional private schools and sought-after charter schools continually produce leaders in athletics, academics and the arts. We are proud of the extraordinary students who attend Cooper City schools, contribute to community service projects and participate in our sports programs. We are enriched by the propensity of our students to excel in personal growth and development. The start of every new school year is an opportunity to set goals and realize dreams. I anticipate another successful school year for Cooper City students, and look forward to participating in your programs and activities. From July to September, the City Commission convenes numerous workshops, special meetings and public hearings dedicated to the city budget planning and adoption process. City Administration painstakingly analyzes how to optimize assets by using the most costeffective methods to reduce spending, while maintaining an optimal level of service to our residents. It is the intent of this City Commission to cut taxes while decreasing our capital outlay, maintain the highest level of service and provide for the safety and security of our constituency. In August and September, the Commission votes on the proposed millage, debt service, and, ultimately, on the proposed budget. Our objective is to lower expenditures and to utilize our resources for the betterment of the lives of the residents of Cooper City. As good stewards of your tax dollars, we will enter the 2019/2020 fiscal year on October 1st, as a friendlier and more responsible city. Please stay abreast of the developments of the budget process and all city business by attending Commission meetings, viewing online presentations and speaking with the members of your commission. I am available to answer inquiries and receive suggestions at all times. Please do not hesitate to reach out by phone or email to discuss your concerns and questions. I can be reached at (954) 434-4300 #260 or at Mayor_Ross@coopercityfl.org. You can also visit with me at your convenience at any of our community events, during a personal office visit, or over a nice game of chess on the third Saturday of each month at the Mayor’s Chess Challenge, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 PM, at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center. I look forward to speaking with you.

CHESS

C

A Gym for the Brain: Complex Mental Work “think, value, judge, decide, and analyze”

hess is a game that has been played for ages. However, chess is not a passive and effortless activity. Chess requires complex mental work that requires players to think, value, judge, decide, and analyze the entire duration of a game. Chess is considered an intellectual game that requires analytical thinking. Playing chess provides constant challenging brain stimulation. For this reason, chess is beneficial to children and their development. Chess is used as a tool to improve concentration, focus, imagination, and self-confidence in children. It is an intellectual activity in which children have fun while gaining a variety of valuable skills. Chess players must strategize to successfully “check mate” an opponent. They must also use their memory skills to successfully plan and execute a victory. These are skills that are also useful in the classroom to improve learning. Children learn to solve abstract problems on a chess board as well, that can in turn, be used in the classroom setting. Chess promotes self-confidence and respect. Students learn that practice improves one’s game much like extra practice in the classroom also improves the ability to

problem solve and recall concepts on tests and assessments. Through practice in playing chess, students learn to persevere and triumph despite difficult situations, an important life lesson. Chess also reinforces following rules to correctly play the game. Students must learn and adhere to the many rules of chess to be able to play. Respect is emphasized, a golden rule of play is that all players must shake hands before and after a match despite victory or defeat. As a result, children learn to accept the many outcomes of every game win, lose, or draw as a normality of playing the game consistently, a great lesson in sportsmanship. In the end, the most important lesson is to develop a love for thinking and the game of chess! Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been benefiting and enriching children for more than 13 years in Florida. Chess for Kids is present in private and public schools and also has convenient locations in community centers throughout Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. For more information about aftercare and chess in the classroom programs, please contact us at (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.

Starting school is a big step and could be stressful

for many parents and children. For children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) this transition could be even more challenging. Having to face a new environment, people, and schedule is often problematic for first-time students.

How do we prepare them? It is important to focus on two major areas when it comes to the transitioning process: skills that a child needs to have to be successful in school and techniques we can use to smooth that transition. Family members and ABA therapists should begin the transitioning process at pre-school age by evaluating a child’s strengths and weaknesses in areas of emotional, behavioral, social, academic and independent skills. Is your child ready to sit and attend for 15 minutes or answer questions, follow group directions and greet their peers? Can he/ she go to the bathroom and eat independently? Other crucial skills to functioning in a group setting include: responding to name, understanding and following

multistep group directions, attending to an activity and the ability to work independently or in a small group.

So what techniques can be used to ease the process and prepare your child? You can start with establishing and teaching a new routine and schedule. Introduce a calendar and start to count down the days until beginning of school. You can visit the new school and take pictures. Introduce new materials that are seen and used in the school setting. If possible, meet some of the kids prior to school starting in order to make friends and get more comfortable in a new social environment. Create a social story “Going to School and read it few times a day. You can also teach new rules and start practicing them at home.

NAVIGATING YOUR CHILD’S TECHNOLOGY USE

By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

A

s technology continues to become increasingly intertwined in our daily lives, parents are presented with the challenging task of familiarizing themselves with the evolving industry and managing their family’s interactions with it. Here are some tips for navigating. • Familiarize yourself with your child’s individual technology use. Parents should seek to fully understand the types of activities their children engage in on their devices. For example, is your child gravitating toward social gaming (e.g., E-sports games with video or voice conversation) and using FaceTime with loved ones or are they mostly engaging in solitary online scrolling? Making this distinction is important in understanding the potential impact of their unique technology use. • Do your research before making decisions about technology. Given the potential hazards that accompany child technology use, it is understandable that many parents are apprehensive in this area. However, it is important to fully understand all relevant advantages and disadvantages before making decisions around your family’s technology use. Consider the following points: - A common concern among parents is decreased physical activity due to increased technology use. Several games such as “Just Dance” and “Pokémon Go” require physical activity or outdoor exploration to play, which presents a unique opportunity for parents to become involved in their child’s technology interests while being active together. - In a previous article we shared that several studies have found links between social media use and increased depression, anxiety, body image issues, and relationship problems, while other studies have identified positive effects of social media use, such as increased social support. Therefore, researching the types of social media accounts your child follows is important in deciding whether their behavior should be continued or curtailed. - Many computer programs and games provide opportunities for creativity, handeye-coordination skills, reinforcement of academics, and experience relevant to promising modern career fields.

Establish technology boundaries and safety rules collaboratively. By inviting children to explore and provide their “expertise” about safety matters and the pros and cons of screen time, parents can facilitate their self-awareness and independent decisionmaking skills in this area as well as increase their likelihood of compliance with said rules. Because there is no one-size-fits-all rule for determining an appropriate amount of screen time for every family, use information gathered from the previous tips to determine the best balance for yours. Also, be sure to take advantage of the many applications designed to enhance parent monitoring and regulation of children’s devices. IF boundaries are broken, create a dialogue to address and then deal with the circumstances surrounding the transgression. It is not advisable to immediately punish, however consequences, contracts and assisting professional help through a trained therapist are some of the measures that can be implemented. • Schedule a variety of activities. If left to their own devices (no pun intended) children will often choose the most easily accessible and immediately gratifying activities, such as phone and video games. It is the responsibility of parents to become involved in their child’s schedule enough to ensure their engagement with a variety of activities. By designating time for indoor, outdoor, individual, and social activities, you are able to convey the importance of balance to your child and also increase opportunities for family and peer bonding time. • Model the way you want your children to use technology. “Do as I say and not as I do” does not apply to this area of parenting. It is crucial for parents to model the type of manners, balance, and safety they wish to see in their child’s own use of technology. Parents should take every opportunity to set a positive example for their children by setting their phone aside at the dinner table, engaging in a variety of their own activities, and putting their phone away while driving. For more individualized support in this matter or other psychological service needs, call our office at (954) 288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com to find out how we may be of help!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS L

ucanus Developmental Center was founded in 1978 by Thomas Buckley, who was dedicated to building a safe place where adults with disabilities could convene. The nonprofit organization had humble beginnings in a small space inside of a Hollywood Church and now boasts an Adult Day Training (ADT) program and Group Residential Homes (GRH); it is also responsible for conducting research for the development of programs and mechanisms, in order to provide more efficient care by third party health care professionals. With over 40 plus years of personal and family commitment, Lucanus has remained and will always remain, a family organization with family values. Our ADT program provides full, well-rounded days of individualized opportunities and group activities. Lucanus emphasizes and carefully supports the development and maintenance of life interactions and independence. We serve as a reliable platform for our clients and their families to continue to build together and grow upon. Our campus is located in Plantation and houses a full basketball gymnasium, a theater, and volleyball and tennis courts. A sample of activities offered includes: cooking, life skills, art, drama performances, sports and community outings. For clients and families who have the need for full-time, overnight and residential services, we have GRH. We strive to provide a lifestyle adorned with the feeling of “Home,

Sweet Home”. Not only are our clients cared for and kept safe by a staff certified in CPR and First Aid (who are also validated to dispense medication and attend doctor appointments), but our clients also live in an environment that offers an atmosphere containing a variety of friendly events and socialization. A few of the events that our clients may enjoy are dances, picnics and sporting events; these are activities that we believe help to expand personal goals and accomplishments, as well as socialization skills. In order to make a difference in this special population we serve, we rely on the support of generous individuals and businesses in and around our community. We would be most grateful if you would consider providing a donation to our organization. We are currently working on improving our transportation, building, houses and ongoing operations. Your support is crucial to the completion of these continual projects. We will gladly keep you updated regarding our progress if you so wish. Please visit our center, we would love to give you a tour! We are located at 6501 W Sunrise Blvd, Plantation, FL 33313. Feel free to contact us at (954) 909-4992 or email us at: Lfiske.lucanus@yahoo.com Lucanus is proudly supported by: Ted Deutch, Member of Congress, The Alzheimer’s Association, Nova Southeastern University, Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization, Inc. and the ARC of Broward.

At Nova Blanche Forman Elementary, we are so excited

to welcome in the 2019-20 school year as an “A” rated school. Each day we relentlessly strive to provide a warm, welcoming environment focused on meeting the individual academic and emotional needs of our students. The 2018-19 year concluded with a beautiful promotion ceremony for our now middle school students. We are very grateful for the hospitality of our neighbors at McFatter Technical College and High School. Ms. Jeanette Johnson and her team provided a facility that helped us continue a tradition of celebrating our students as they transition into 6th grade. Thank you, McFatter Tech!!!

The 2018/2019 school year was another stellar one for the students

of Cooper City. The Cooper City High School graduating 2019 class wrapped it up with innumerous accolades, commendations and awards. With a 99% graduation rate, 233 Silver Cord recipients and a laundry list of honors, Cooper City High School continues their Tradition of Excellence and maintains their well-deserved “A” rating. Our students continue to make us proud to live and work in this city, year after year. We owe the success of our schools to dedicated students, involved parents, enthusiastic community partners and devoted teachers. I hope that you’ve all had a chance to make it out to the Flamingo West Park, the Emerald of Cooper City. On June 21st, we cut the ribbon for the opening of the long-awaited ark. The Cooper City Marching Band, Little Miss Cooper City, former commissioners Mallozzi and Sims, and numerous friends and dignitaries joined us in the celebration for the community introduction to this state-of-the-art sports park and recreational facility. The park boasts an array of outdoor ball fields, walking trails, rentable pavilions, a meeting room, plenty of parking and so much more. After

This school year will be one to remember. Our educators are ready to push the envelope further than ever before in 2019-20. Innovative ideas are flowing!!! School-wide programs and celebrations focused around literacy, school culture, individualism, and acceptance are set. Our educators and students are what makes Nova Blanche Forman so special. Be sure to follow along with highlights and updates through Instagram and Twitter using @ NBFelem and #KnowNova. Wishing everyone a successful 2019-20 school year! years of dreaming, hoping and planning, our 36,000 residents can now enjoy 27-acres of incomparable recreational space, where families, teams and friends can gather, play and make the most of their time outdoors. Students from Pre-K to 12th grade are eager to embark on the 2019/2020 school year, entering the next level of their educational careers. They will be meeting new friends, mentors, leaders and peers; a new, exciting chapter is about to begin. If you are new to Cooper City, you got here just in time! We welcome all the new students, teachers and staff who will fill the classrooms, hallways and offices of our Cooper City schools in the upcoming school year. School begins on August 14th this year. Please watch for walkers, bikers and young drivers, heading to and from school during the varied arrival and dismissal times in the morning and afternoon hours. any measure the success of a school by various different aspects; student achievement, quality of teachers, or its catalogue of extracurriculars. One thing is sure. A school’s success is greatly determined by its leadership. For the past 19 years, Nova High School in Davie, Florida has held a reputation as one of the best high schools in Broward County, soaring to the tops of school ranking charts, and making a tremendous impact on countless students, all under the steadfast leadership of Principal Dr. John R. LaCasse. After years of tireless work and dedication as Nova High’s principal (and retirement just around the corner), it was time to transition the school into a new decade with the appointment of a new leader, Ms. Olayemi Awofadeju. Ms. Awofadeju is a graduate of Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, where she earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees and began her teaching career. In 2008, Ms. Awofadeju was hired by Dr. LaCasse to serve as an Assistant Principal at Nova High where she worked diligently until 2012. As principal of South Broward High School, she has successfully implemented many academic and social programs and initiatives that have been executed effectively to increase student enrollment, student achievement, and students’ college and career readiness. Ms. Awofadeju has worked in public education for 19 years. She is known for her passion and commitment to all students, and believes serving as a school principal is a privilege and an honor. Ms. Awofadeju is as an educator who enjoys working with students to achieve their dreams by providing challenging opportunities that required them to work consistently with a global mindset, while encouraging and inspiring others to do the same. She is humbled to be selected to return this year as principal of NHS this school year.

Come August you can feel the back to school excitement.

Suddenly bright displays of colored markers, brand new crayon boxes and notebooks in every size appear on the shelves of most stores. For some the feeling of butterflies for a new school year ahead is exciting and full of endless possibilities. For others the anticipation of a new school year is daunting. Let’s face it school can evoke many feeling in all of us. As parents, it is important that we set the tone for a new school year with excitement and enthusiasm.

Positive Vibes It is important to talk to your child/teen about the upcoming school year and to reassure them with positive thinking. A positive outlook for the year ahead will get them excited to meet their new teachers and friends.

Shop, Shop, Shop I remember as a child how fun it was to shop for new clothes and school supplies. I would pick out my outfits and pack up my school backpack with excitement. Make shopping fun. If your child enjoys making lists allow them to do so. If they are not ready to write, have them draw pictures of the things they would like to have for school. Of course I mean within reason, school shopping is expensive. You don’t need to spend a ton of money to have a fun school shopping experience.

Meet the Teacher I have had the pleasure of being a Kindergarten teacher for the past 23 years, as well as practicing Family Therapist. I know the importance of attending open house, which is usually the day before school starts. Teachers are vital in setting a positive tone for the days ahead. Students have a much-needed opportunity to roam around their new classroom, meet other students and most importantly meet their teacher. Remind them that their teachers are very excited to meet them too. This should alieve many thoughts of the unknown for them on the first day of school.

It’s Showtime The first day of school can be scary for both you and your child. Trust that you have chosen the right school and remember that teachers are there to help create a safe and positive for environment for your child to learn both socially and academically no matter what grade they are entering. I know for sure that each day will get easier for both of you. Keeping the lines of communication opened through family therapy is important and can aide in the dialog needed between you and your child. Have a great school year! Joele Amster, M.S. Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern Counseling and Wellness Center of South Florida

SCHOOLS Elementary School for 17 years, Mr. Erik Anderson became the proud new Principal of Davie Elementary School on July 1, 2019. This year, Davie Elementary will take a page from the Sam Parker & Mac Anderson book, 212 The Extra Degree, as we implement our school’s partially new theme: The Power of Yet...Full Steam Ahead! The book’s clever authors bring to our attention that, “At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train. Just one extra degree makes all the difference.” Empowered by this motivational message, Davie Elementary plans on going “full steam ahead” for the 2019/2020 school year. We will strive to come together as a community of learners, helping each other become the best that we can be, each and every day!

Although the start of the school year can be extremely exciting, it can also be quite daunting for students as they take on different subjects, learn new concepts and make new friends. This upcoming school year promises lots of learning and fun, but it will also encourage both social and emotional growth in students, best preparing them for our ever-changing world. By supporting one another and learning in a positive environment, we will flourish individually and as a unit. We look forward to partnering with you to provide the guidance and support that our young people need, so that they may continue to grow and be successful as they embark on their educational journey. Davie Elementary School is located at 7025 SW 39th Street, Davie, FL 33314. For more information about our school, please call (754) 323-5400 or log onto our website, at: https://www.browardschools.com/davie.

reetings, everyone! As summer comes to an end, we are thrilled to welcome our incoming kindergarteners and all of our returning families to Nova Eisenhower Elementary. We had an incredible time last year, implementing lots of exciting new activities and programs. Our Robotics Club and Chess Club achieved great things, and we look forward to their continued success in the upcoming school year. Additionally, we had our first annual STREAM night, where every student completed a project and presented it that night; we can’t wait to see what our creative students have in store for us this year! Heal the Planet returned to our school last year as well, and taught several grades the importance of nutrition, sustainability and wellness. We also brought back Faculty vs. the 5th kickball game and everyone had a blast! New reading programs were a great success as well. “Kindness Korner” is a cozy reading corner for students and teachers to

enjoy. In this space, students and teachers can read books about friendship and kindness to others. Our Mystery Reader program was a big hit with the students; we invited different parents and community members to come in and read a story to the them. Students even got the chance to read individually with our service dog, Gunther, throughout the year. Furthermore, our PTA offered some amazing opportunities for our families to become involved; these activities included a Valentine’s Day dance, movie night, field day and a painting night. We encourage all parents to join the PTA and learn how to get involved in all of our fun and educational activities. Just a friendly reminder, we are always looking to expand our partnerships with businesses and community organizations that want to work with us to provide services, volunteer hours and/ or donations to our school. Let’s make the 2019-2020 school year the best one yet!

aving the planet, reducing hunger and helping the community is not what comes to mind when you think of a middle schooler, but at our school, that’s just what students did during breakfast and lunch last year. On January 16th, Mrs. Habenicht and PTSA parent, Tiffany Mosca, launched The Share Table program. The project idea started when Mrs. Habenicht attended a summer workshop regarding the program, which was already in effect at Beach Montessori School. “She approached school administration for approval and then PTSA about helping to get the program started at Pioneer,” said Mrs. Mosca. “It took quite a bit of time observing the program, having meetings to figure out how we would get volunteers for the table and how we would acquire a salad cart and refrigerator, which were both very expensive.” With a lot of hard work and dedication, the Share Table was finally installed and was a success throughout the year. Originally, the program started in Indiana, in 2007, when John Williamson (the creator of the K-12 Food Rescue Program) was concerned about how much food Americans throw away and how U.S. schools waste a billion dollars in food each year. Williamson noticed that there were people who weren’t homeless looking for unopened food in trash cans. After discussing his concern with his

wife, he created the Food Rescue Program, which teaches kids to donate their unwanted food to the Food Rescue/Share table. Along with parent and teacher volunteers, students also helped out. At Pioneer, our NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) club helped keep the program running. On many days, these volunteers came to school early, stayed at lunches and put hours of work into making the table run smoothly. Eighth-grader Soumya Joseph said, “I wouldn’t be able to name just one person that contributed the most. All volunteers, including Cole Perullo, Sophia Safrin, Taliah De Miranda and Lior Aviv, have helped greatly in the efforts of the Share Table.” As of March of 2019, the Share Table had collected 4,076 items, rescued 849 meals, and reduced 509.2 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Mrs. Habenicht was extremely passionate about the table, ensuring that the students understood how much a small gesture could positively impact the lives of so many others. “One thing the students don’t see with the program, is how many people they are helping and how much greenhouse gases they are preventing.” The Share Table is an incredible program that has helped countless people throughout the community this year, and Pioneer hopes to see even more food collected and saved in the future.
