Dear Readers,

Ready, set, GO!!! And just like that, summer is over and we’re full steam ahead—packing lunches, buying school supplies, filling out paperwork and getting our youngsters settled into the new school year! Welcome to our Back to School issue, where we aim to help families transition out of that laid-back summer mode and into the new season with ease. Amongst the madness of the season, it’s a time in which we need to nurture our children all the more. The new school year brings new teachers and new friends; perhaps a different school with an unfamiliar method of transport; and maybe even a new after-school program. So many changes can leave little ones feeling a tad anxious or unsettled. After spending plenty of quality time with one another during a long summer, it is essential to keep that togetherness momentum going so that your child may feel secure. An activity as simple as a family game night can help to bring everyone together as a unit, while creating solidarity, warmth and of course great memories. Dinnertime has always been my favorite time of day in our house because it always brings us together¬; no phones allowed—just a time to unite, talk about our day, reminisce a little over fond memories and come up with ideas to make more. This Back to School edition of Sports and Activities Directory marks our six year anniversary for the Davie, Cooper City and Southwest Ranches publication. Happy anniversary to us!! This little oasis in Broward County proves to be a unique community—where families, businesses, schools and city officials all come together in unity to make it some place special. I’m honored for it not only to be my place of business, but to be able to call it home as well! While working on the directory over the last several years, I have discovered so many hidden treasures in our area that I would never have known existed, and it is always such a pleasure to share a newfound gem within the pages. As we move into our 7th year of publishing in Davie, Cooper City & Southwest Ranches, I am as excited now as I ever was—maybe even more so! Positive feedback has shown that not only has Sports & Activities Directory proven to be a truly valuable resource to readers, but that it continues to be beneficial to our community as well. Participation in recreational sports has increased, as parents and children are made more aware of what’s available to them. Accomplishments made by local residents have been acknowledged and applauded through articles. Charitable events and fundraisers have been showcased and have helped increase involvement—encouraging kindness and generosity while teaching our youth positive values. Many local businesses have become a part of our directory of resources and have flourished by making their services more known. It’s amazing what’s out there right in our own backyard! Not forgetting to mention schools, almost every school is represented in each issue—giving them the opportunity to utilize space in our magazine and to let us know of some of the incredible achievements made by students, teachers and staff. Some teachers have used Sports & Activities Directory as a learning tool and have even had their students collaborate and write an article for their school. The students get very excited when they see their work published and their name in print! I would like to give a special thanks to a group of passionate, hardworking and creative individuals that I am blessed to call friends—The Sports & Activities team. Together we are strong; I couldn’t do it without you! I hope that you enjoy this Back to School issue and find it a useful tool for planning your family entertainment, recreational sports, activities and more.

My very best to you,

Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

10

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer! It is always great to see the Pine Island Pool, Betty Booth Roberts Pool and the Shenandoah Splash Pad full of Davie Residents. If your child still needs to become water safe, you can sign them up for swim lessons at the Pine Island Pool. Our professional aquatics staff are all Certified Water Safety Instructors, who have had years of swim lesson experience. Swim lessons are available for those between ages six months and older. As we transition from summer to fall, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers great programs and events for all ages. The Pine Island Multipurpose Center is home to several fitness classes, such as: Zumba, Jazzercise, Mommy & Me Baby Bootcamp and Senior Chair Aerobics. We offer many art classes, as well as a new youth theater program! A full listing of all programs and activities offered can be found throughout the Sports and Activities Guide. Just look for all listings that begin with “Davie”. This fall, the special events division will be busy once again with a fantastic lineup of special events. On August 11th, the Town of Davie Auction will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Everyone will be able to bid on vehicles and other equipment that is being retired by the Town of Davie. On September 8th, we will welcome the Davie Pro Rodeo to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds for a night of competition and fun! The gates will open at 6:00pm, with the performance commencing at 7:30pm. On October 13th, the 3rd Annual Doc Reno’s Bacon, Blues and Brews Festival will celebrate all things bacon and pork, accompanied by great live music and craft beer. On October 15th and 16th, the Town of Davie will celebrate Government Days by opening our doors to local schools, youth clubs and organizations, so that they may take a tour of Town Hall and meet with Town staff. Groups must preregister with our special events division, by calling (954) 797-1181. On October 27th, get ready for some “spooktacular” fun at our annual Halloween Happenings event at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, which will include: a costume contest, games, youth entertainment, vendors, a pumpkin patch, a not-so-scary haunted house, and a horse costume contest. Also, on October 26th and 27th, the South Florida Cloggers will turn Robbins Lodge into a scary haunted house. When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember: whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Dear Cooper City Friends:

12

The start of a new school year is upon us, and it feels as if only a moment has passed since I sat amongst audiences of proud parents and watched as the 5th graders matriculated from each of our three public elementary schools. Wherever your child received his/her primary school education— whether it was Cooper City Elementary School; Griffin Elementary School; Embassy Lakes Elementary School, or any of our charter or private schools—you reveled in the same satisfaction. Together, we watched proudly as they walked across the stage, realizing the first of many great accomplishments to come; we look forward to their many future accomplishments, including their high school graduation. The commission and I were proud to have been invited to Cooper City High School’s 2017/2018 graduation ceremony, which boasted a 97% graduation rate this year. Our A-rated local high school, and the students that move through its halls, are the embodiment of the extraordinary standards we have come to expect. They say it takes a whole village to raise a child, and here in Cooper City, we exemplify this philosophy. Our schools, parks and security are the thread that sews this community together; we reap the benefits from what we give back to our local institutions. I have been honored to witness your proud moments, and I look forward to sharing many more as an active participant in this village we call Cooper City. As the doors open to Cooper City Elementary School for the 2018/2019 school year, students, parents and community participants will be greeted by the latest contribution to the school/ community partnership: a giant, freestanding book-sharing cabinet on wheels! Principal Schlosser had the vision to commission local Boy Scout, Riley Edmunds, to build the unit—which is wheeled out to the flagpole area in front of the school’s main entrance each morning. Edmunds seized the opportunity to hone the skills he obtained through his years of scouting and used the community service project toward his bid for the rank of Eagle Scout. Principal Schlosser’s idea, along with Riley’s development and donation of the mobile library, is a perfect example of the partnership between the school and the community—the foundation of Cooper City. The “free library” concept is one that the city has embraced whole-heartedly. We now boast four Little Free Library locations, from which residents and visitors can borrow, read and share books at their convenience, with unlimited hours of operation—no registration required and no late fees. Just as August 15 is the start of the new school year, October 1 begins our fiscal year. During the months of July and August, the Commission hosts a series of meetings dedicated to the budget process. The first budget hearing, the adoption of the fire assessment & millage rates, and the final budget hearing all occur in the month of September. All budget hearings and special budget meetings are public hearings and are advertised by the City Clerk. We look forward to receiving your input and participation during these hearings. Please continue to monitor the City’s website and calendar at www. coopercityfl.org for specific meeting dates and times. I would like to congratulate Massimo “Max” Pulcini on becoming your Commissioner-elect from District 1. Max ran unopposed for the seat that will soon be vacated by Commissioner John Sims. We thank Commissioner Sims and bid him a fond farewell, with best wishes in his future ventures. Max will take his place on the dais, following the November 6th election. Also completing her third and final term in the District 2 seat, is Commissioner Lisa Mallozzi. Concomitantly, we wish Lisa all the best in her future endeavors. Although it is still unknown as to who will be filling the District 2 seat, here are the four qualified residents that are still vying for the position on the dais: William Athas; Olga Cabrera Watson; Lisa Conlon Dodge and Howard Meltzer. Furthermore, you will be asked to vote on whether or not you are in favor of the 12 million dollar bond issue, which will allow the commission to completely renovate Bill Lips Park and the Cooper City Sports Complex—including artificial turf, new lighting, additional restrooms, parking and fields. Make your vote count on the November 6 ballot, on both of these items. Please visit the Events section of this publication to view our fall schedule of upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you all, in and around Cooper City!

WHAT’S NEW IN COOPER CITY? I

feel privileged and grateful for being able to start each new school year with the charged gusto of over twenty-three hundred teenagers. I revel in the excitement and energy that the students all project. Their enthusiasm is fueled by the hopeful anticipation of what lies ahead. New and familiar faces await us as soon as the first bell rings to start the year. This year, at our Cooper City schools, some of our favorite teachers and school staff—whom we hold dear to our hearts—¬have retired and will be enjoying their newly gained free time traveling to parts unknown and taking on new and exciting ventures. Best of luck to Cheryl Mutnick, Jocelyn Wills, Willie Mae Cain, Sherry Shomers, Jane Abramczyk, Therese Sullivan, Clara Neeck, Donna Pressley and Susan Gentile. We wish them all the best in retirement and on their journeys. We look forward to getting to know our new teachers and school staff with eagerness and excitement. A fresh start will be made in the “city” as well, with the addition of two new dog parks. One park is located at Christie Schafale Park and the other is at Forest Lake Park. Ribbon-cuttings for both new parks took place on July 17, followed by the Furry Friends Meet and Greet at Forest Lake Park, on August 25. The Community Center has been renovated as well. Our Public Works/Park Maintenance team is always working to keep your recreational areas and playground equipment safe and upgraded. So, come out and enjoy the remodeled, upgraded space where families can participate in many of our programs and activities—like our Grandparents Day

Celebration on September 9, Mom & Son Night of Fun on September 21 and our Community Book Swap on October 12. Take the opportunity to make the most of the facilities that are available to you. As traffic gets heavier, it signals us to be even more observant of our sidewalks and streets. Stay alert by not sending or reading text messages while driving. Safe driving helps protect the kids and families who are walking, riding bikes, driving in cars and playing in their yards. Please obey speed limits, drop-off and pick-up routes and school zone signs. These traffic laws were established to make everything run more smoothly, safely and easier for everyone. Slowing down will not prohibit you from getting to your destination; however, speeding or violating another traffic regulation just might. Safety is a priority in Cooper City. We remain ranked in the top 10 of the 100 safest cities in Florida, by the National Council for home safety and security. Aside from a stellar public safety force, one good reason for our great safety rating is that we watch out for one another. Continue to be alert, aware and conscious of your surroundings at all times. The easiest way to protect yourself is to stay out of harm’s way. If you see any unusual activity in your neighborhood, at your school or anywhere you are, report it! Your instincts are extremely important and valuable. Help is just one quick phone call away. Remember: If you see something, say something. Stay safe, Cooper City! I am Jamie Curran, your commissioner from district 4, and for the entire city at large. We’re in this together, Cooper City. Call me any time, at (954) 434-4300 #260 or email me at Commissioner_Curran@cooperctyfl.org

urpose is less about what you want than about what you give. The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others. Crossing a finish line sparks multiple feelings. Some include fulfillment, exhilaration, accomplishment and more. Helping someone else cross the finish line, who can’t propel themselves on their own power, is twice as impactful. On Sept 30, 2018, thirty seven special triathletes will be paired with power buddies to race the Escape to Miami Triathlon. All 37 special triathletes will ride their wheelchairs aboard a large yacht that will ship them to a remote, uninhabited island, approximately 1 mile away from mainland Miami. At the island, they will be transferred from the wheelchairs into their own inflatable raft. Next, their Power Buddy will strap on a waterproof cord around their waist and to the front of the raft, and then swim 1 mile to Miami pulling their special triathlete. Once on land, they will be transferred into a special compass race chair attached to a bicycle where the duo will ride for 25 miles throughout Miami and Miami Beach. Power buddy duos get to enjoy each other’s company as they cheer on their friends and each other during the race. It is incredibly rewarding to see the special triathletes enjoy the feeling of the wind on their smiling faces as they approach the final transition. T2 is known as the last transition, where they detach the bicycle and the power buddy pushes the race chair for 6 miles. During this final segment, the

duo is encouraging each other to hang in there by eating, drinking, laughing and screaming screams of joy to reach the finish line! During the last 500 meters, the race participants can hear the roar of spectators screaming their names as they cross the finish line. At the finish line, the duo hugs each other with joy, accomplishment and camaraderie, glowing with smiles. When you know that your buddy is depending on you to power them through the course, you experience an indescribable force that energizes you to continue performing at any cost. If that’s not enough, there’s an unexplained joy of fulfillment knowing that the unending smile of your buddy is because of your generous contribution of your fitness and friendship. The Power Buddies of Special Compass enjoy the meaningful races with the “Differently Abled” often. Healthy, fit people are looking for ways they can give back to their community in need, somehow. Special Compass is a Non-Profit, 501-C-3 organization that serves the Differently Abled population by creating life changing experiences though athletic events, such as Marathons, Triathlons, Spartan Mud Runs, 5K Runs and more. Helping Female Athletes Prevent Sports-Related Knee Injuries

oday we are seeing an increasing number of girls playing competitive sports, with roughly 200,000 at the collegiate level. Along with increased sports participation also comes an increased risk for injury, with girls being at a higher risk for certain types of injuries than boys. Sports that involve jumping, twisting and pivoting can put tremendous amounts of strain on the knee, which is one of the most commonly injured joints in young female athletes. One of the most serious knee injuries is a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Female athletes are of particular concern with four to six times greater risk than their male counterparts. Fortunately, education and training programs are available in South Florida that focus on preventing ACL injuries. For instance, the Nicklaus Children’s Sports Health Center in Pinecrest incorporates muscle strengthening, motor skill coordination, agility drills and other training aimed at reducing the risk of an ACL injury. Prevention is vital because an ACL injury will typically result in surgical reconstruction and up to 12 months of rehabilitation. Even after your daughter is back in action playing sports there can be long-term consequences, including a 50 percent risk of developing osteoarthritis within a decade and a 25 percent chance of re-injury. The signs of a knee injury include pain, swelling and difficulty moving the leg or walking even a short distance. If your daughter is injured, seek medical care right away for diagnosis of the problem, which could be a torn ACL, a broken bone, or other muscle or ligament injury. If surgery is needed, it is important to see a

pediatric specialist so that the injury can be treated appropriately with regard to your child’s future bone growth. The initial goals are to stabilize the knee, strengthen the muscles, and restore the full range of motion. Advanced training is often needed to improve motor skill coordination, balance, speed and confidence prior to returning to sport. Once the rehabilitation program is completed, your daughter may be able to return to sports. Tips for protecting the knee and preventing ACL injuries: • Perform a proper warm up prior to sports participation that includes dynamic activities such as skipping and side shuffling. • Participate in 6 to 8 weeks of pre-season conditioning to physically prepare for the sporting season and reduce the risk of injury. • Wear properly sized footwear with the right tread pattern. For instance, running shoes may “grip” the court too much when playing tennis. If your daughter is wearing shoes with cleats, be sure they are the right length for the condition of the field. • Inspect the field or court prior to games or practices for any potential hazards such as spilled liquids or potholes. • Be mindful of fatigue, tell your daughter to listen to her body. If her knee “doesn’t feel right,” or she feels exhausted, it is ok to pull out of the game. Remember that it is far better to prevent a knee injury than to reconstruct a torn ACL. Lauren Schlacht Butler is the physical therapy supervisor at the Nicklaus Children’s Sports Health Center in Pinecrest, which offers a comprehensive ACL injury prevention program including group injury prevention classes.

How to Increase Your Child’s School Motivation and Success By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

As the start of the new school year approaches, parents

and educators are faced with the challenge of getting students back to the books in the midst of their “end-of-summer-break blues.” This can be stressful for all involved, as issues with school motivation and performance often impact adults just as much as students. However, there are ways you can help your child make this school year the best one yet!

Here’s what you can do: Give your child a sense of control. Children are much more likely to be engaged in their education when they feel that they play an important role in the process. Ask your child questions such as, “What kind of goals do you have for this school year? How can I help you achieve them?” (Hint: Be flexible and supportive in hearing their responses, especially when they don’t align with your preferences – some students might hope to get an A in Science this year, while others might aim to become a better artist, and both are great goals.) Also, look for opportunities to give your child options as often as possible. Allow them to help make decisions around matters such as selecting elective courses, creating a homework schedule, and choosing methods for educational support. For example, you may ask, “Would you like to work on your homework at the library or at home today?” or “Would you prefer to try the online tutoring or the live tutoring program?” Avoid criticism or “guilt-tripping”. While often stated with the intention of using concern to motivate your child, critical or guilt-inducing statements are ineffective and sure to backfire. Remarks such as, “You’re not going to make it very far with these kind of grades” can lead to a negative association with academics as well as low self-esteem, which further decrease school motivation and performance. Instead, try this next tip…

Use praise and rewards for academic effort more than outcome. In a performance-based setting such as school, students with academic difficulties are particularly vulnerable to issues with self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall school motivation. By praising and rewarding your child’s academic effort more than their outcomes, you communicate the value of perseverance as well as that their worth is not determined by a letter or a number value. Acknowledge your child’s academic effort by using statements such as, “I’m so proud of how focused you have been on this project” and “Your dedication to studying for this test is wonderful.” Ironically enough, by emphasizing effort rather than grades, grades often improve as a result of your praise and rewards increasing their effort! Ensure balance. Children and adults alike require a healthy balance between work and recreation to perform at their optimal level. Help your child establish this balance by encouraging breaks, making time for creativity, getting plenty of physical activity, and scheduling social activities. Seek professional help if hitting a roadblock. Often, issues such as attentional deficits, learning disorders, and emotional problems initially appear as low school motivation. If the tips shared in this article are not proving beneficial for your child’s academic performance, there might be more going on than meets the eye. Professional services, such as a psychoeducational evaluation, can help to detect intellectual or emotional factors underlying school problems and provide direction for appropriate intervention. Call our office at (954) 288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com to find out how we may be of help! I invite you to reach out to me with questions or with future article suggestions. Multicultural Event is one where families are invited to the school to share elements of their culture or ethnicity with other members of the community—through storytelling, food, dance, arts and many other things that make cultures unique. These events can help families feel more welcome in school, while creating social connections within the community. Flamingo Elementary held its first Multicultural Family Night as a culminating activity for the 2017-2018 school year. Many of our families have native languages other than English. The outreach efforts included communication to invite the families in multiple languages. We wanted to create an environment where they would feel welcomed and supported. In an effort to ensure appreciation and understanding of one another, students have been learning about their own culture, as well as the cultures of others. In preparation for the cumulating event, each grade level learned about a culture from a different area; they created art projects representing those areas, as well. The countries of the cultures studied included: Mexico, Canada, China, India, Australia and the African continent. These beautiful projects were displayed throughout the school for all of the students to see. Fifth grade students shared about their personal heritage by creating

multi-generational family trees. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade created paper doll characters that represented the countries from which their families came from; they were adorned with fabrics and other colorful embellishments. These characters lined the halls, displaying the many cultures represented at Flamingo Elementary. During Multicultural Family night, hundreds of students and families enjoyed the activities offered. As they entered the school, they were greeted by the work of all of the students through their family trees and heritage characters. In the cafeteria, students had the opportunity to create art projects from around the world with their families. These projects included: pipe cleaner people, henna hands, cool peacocks, tin foil reliefs, and koi fish. Guests also had the opportunity to play board games, hosted by the ESOL Department. Students practiced their English skills and were even able to take some games home to play with. All in all, it was an extremely successful night. Students left having a deeper understanding of their own culture, as well as the cultures of those around them. Our hope is to continue to enhance appreciation and understanding of others by continuing this extremely successful event, annually.

By: Russell Schwartz, Nova Blanche Forman Elementary Principal

The new school year has brought excitement and enthusiasm to Nova

Blanche Forman Elementary. We warmly welcome all of our new Nova families! Becoming a Nova Titan is something that our families consider a lifelong honor and achievement. At an elementary level, we value having the opportunity to begin establishing a sense of Nova Pride, filled with a love for learning and kindness towards others. This summer, Nova Blanche Forman continued the process of always improving. While visiting our campus, you will notice how our cafeteria has transformed into a dining venue where acceptance, manners, and friendliness is engrained. We have recognized that classrooms are not the only places where learning occurs. Therefore, our hallways are being brightened to become pathways for learning, as each moment of our day could present a new opportunity to grow. At the start of the school year, we also reminisce about our now 6th graders and their time spent in elementary school. We wish them much success in middle school. Having an academic campus like Nova affords us the opportunity to remain connected to our students as they progress through the public school system. At the end of the 2017-18 school year, we had Nova High School graduates—who previously attended Nova Blanche Forman—walk through our campus amidst loud cheers and many hugs and high fives. We celebrate their milestone reached and will continue

to encourage our elementary students to pursue the goal of graduating high school, in preparation for college or a career. During the 2018-19 school year, we will focus heavily on school safety, student Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and academic excellence. We are working closely with the School Board of Broward County and Local Police/Fire Agencies to enhance safety standards at our school site. Additionally, we are focused on having happy students that are socially intertwined within our school culture. Lastly, we are bringing in new programs and enrichment opportunities to build more excitement around learning. The 2018-19 school year will be an unforgettable one for Nova Blanche Forman Elementary.

T

ypically, when we think of after school activities we think of sports and activities that require physical effort. However, there is a whole world of activities that develop children’s intellect and are proven to be great tools for school and social life. Intellectual activities include those activities in which children have fun and gain knowledge on a specific subject. Chess is one of those activities in which children not only have a great deal of fun, but they also gain a variety of valuable skills while they learn and play. The main goal of chess is for children to understand logical strategy to foresee and predict consequences of action, therefore developing critical and logical thinking skills. Chess teaches children to be independent while learning to make decisions by themselves. It encourages children’s creativity and imagination as they become more inventive through play while developing new strategies and moves. Chess is self-motivating, encouraging children to search for the best move and the best plan to get to Check Mate! It is a rewarding and fun activity because the more children practice, the better players they become, and not one game is exactly the same as another. Players can create new moves and develop new strategies every time they play.

Learning to play chess at an early stage in life is very beneficial to their success in the classroom and life. It helps students concentrate and develop memory skills which, in turn, helps them pay attention in class. It also stimulates self-confidence, opening the door to further develop leadership skills. Children amass reasoning skills naturally while they increase their ability to solve abstract problems and anticipate conflict situations. With respect to values, it is a proven fact that playing chess diminishes violence at school and in the community, promoting respect for the other players, responsibility for their own actions, and compliance with the rules of the game. Chess goes hand in hand with science, technology, math, art and psychology. It develops a scientific way of thinking. It involves an infinitive number of calculations and strategies. Chess is considered an “Art” in the form of a game, and is a test of patience, nerves and will power. Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been running for more than 13 years in Florida. We are present in private and public schools, and city community centers in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach counties. Contact Chess for Kids for more information about our aftercare and chess in the classroom programs (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.

orking parents feel no guilt when their kids attend the after-school Adventure Program, at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center. Over the years, the after-school program has been the recipient of numerous awards—most recently the South Florida Parenting magazine’s Kid Crown Award for Best After-School Program. From 2:00pm to 6:00pm, every school day, the Adventure Program offers kindergartners through eighth graders many creative, fun choices. Parents have peace of mind that their kids are happy and are in a safe environment. Transportation to the J’s after-school program is available from many elementary and middle schools in the area. Center membership is not required to attend the program. Children can enjoy arts and crafts, Ga-Ga ball, kickball, Wii/Xbox and computer time, or they may finish their schoolwork in a supervised homework room. The fun takes place on the Center’s 40-acre campus, at 5850 S. Pine Island Rd., in Davie. The J houses two air-conditioned gymnasiums, a computer lab, game room, sports fields, a playground, a climate-controlled swimming pool, a newly opened splash pad, tennis courts, air-conditioned racquetball courts and dance studios. Middle schoolers have a blast in the program’s Teen JCrew division. They may hang out with friends, finish homework, use computers, swim, work out in the fitness center (ages 13 and up), participate in a Leadership-in-Training program or play in the Wii/Xbox game room.

In addition to all of the activities that are included with the after-school program fees, parents may sign their children up for extracurricular programs and classes for a separate fee, which includes: basketball, tennis, yoga, cooking, karate, Lego® robotics, soccer, science, stop-motion animation, jazzy art, Suzuki piano, hip hop, tap, ballet dance, gymnastics and tumbling. “Parents of children in our after-school program don’t feel that their kids are missing out on extracurricular activities,” said Arlene Abrams, JCC after-school program director. “Their kids are already here, and our counselors escort the children back and forth to the class or activity.” “We try to keep on top of what kids are interested in,” Abrams said. “This fall we will offer a drone technology class. The kids will learn the basics of drone flight, drone safety and how to build, code and fly different types of drones.” “We are also very excited to bring in “Young Engineers,” an Israeli STEM education company that has locations in over 40 countries,” said Abrams. The “young engineers” will use Lego® building bricks, motors and other mechanical parts and learn scientific principles in a fun and interactive way. When school is not in session, the J offers vacation days and winter and spring break mini-camps for a separate fee, with non-stop fun that includes field trips. On “early release days” children in the program are picked up at no extra charge. Parents may sign their kids up for two to five days per week, with or without transportation. A 10% discount is offered for each additional sibling. For more information, or to register for the program, call (954) 434-0499, ext. 202.
