“Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” -Sir Norman MacEwan

Dear Readers,

The holiday season is upon us and it is a wonderful time for family, friends and loved ones to reconnect, celebrate old traditions and create new memories with one another along the way. Before the hustle and bustle of gift-giving and traveling begins, remember to take time to cultivate family togetherness and cherish all of the little moments that we so often take for granted; because after all, family is the heart of the holidays. As we reflect on what we are most thankful for during this special time, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to all of the students, teachers, parents and staff, who help contribute to the greatness of our community; your hard work and dedication is an inspiration to us all. It brings me great joy to inform you that this year, the annual Harvest Drive is back and better than ever! Each November, over 180 Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), as well as many private schools, civic organizations, and business partners come together to provide a week’s worth of groceries and a gift card to more than 2,400 families, so that they may enjoy a complete Thanksgiving meal. Families with children in BCPS are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers and other local social service agencies, based on their financial needs. This incredible drive strives to promote the concept of philanthropy to BCPS students, allowing them the opportunity to give back to their community in a direct and meaningful way. By educating students on the issue of hunger within our community, we are empowering them to take leadership roles and make strides toward ending its devastating impact. Although it is a time for giving, it is easy to forget to give back during the holidays. What with all the shopping and rushing about, we tend to lose focus on the true meaning of the season. This year, as you sit down at the family table, surrounded by those whom you love, make it a priority to discuss how you can give back to your community and spread a little bit of holiday “cheer” to those around you. Remember, it doesn’t cost a dime to be kind, and a smile can go a long way in brightening someone’s day. I hope that you enjoy this festive issue of Sports & Activities Directory, and I wish you all the best for a happy and healthy New Year! Dear Neighbors,

10

Keep your eye on rising football star, Sophia Molina! CCHS football coach, Rocky Morgan noticed the 15-year-old Cooper City High School sophomore as she practiced kicking soccer goals on a field adjacent to where his JV Cowboys practiced football. Although Sophia had never kicked a football prior to this day, she made some quick adjustments and demonstrated repeated half field goals for the boys. With some coaxing, Sophia was encouraged to try out for, and ultimately join the team. History has been made, as she is the first female kicker for Cooper City High School. Congratulations, in advance, for all your future efforts. We pay a well-deserved homage to Mayor Suellen Fardelmann, who served Cooper City in public office from 1984 to 2005, by aptly naming the former Cooper City Sports Complex, The Suellen Fardelmann Sports Complex. Suellen Fardelmann was an integral force in ensuring the development of the sports park and other Cooper City park facilities during her tenure as an elected official. This fitting tribute is our way of saying thank you to Mayor Fardelmann for her dedicated service to the community. Our parks are a cornerstone for Cooper City community activities, programs and events. We invite you to join us in Memorial Park on Monday, November 11 at 11:00 AM, as we honor all those men and women who have selflessly served our country in a Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony. On November 23, we will present our Annual Father/Daughter Dinner at 6:30 PM at Cooper City High School. This popular event, attended by fathers and daughters who return year after year, is a testament to time-honored tradition in Cooper City. On November 24, from 2:00PM until 4:00 PM we will host our Annual Autism Awareness Day Event at the Cooper City Fire Station. Families and their children with developmental disabilities have an opportunity to interact with fire rescue and law enforcement professionals in a controlled and welcoming atmosphere. We welcome families to come out and meet local service providers in education and health related fields, who are on hand to share information and connect families with local programs and services specific to their special needs. December 2nd is Registration Day at the Fire Station for the Santa Program deliveries of December 14 and 15. Call the program hotline at (954)436-7310 for further details. Santa makes his first appearance at Light Up Cooper City in Memorial Park on Friday, December 6. The lights go on promptly at 6:00 PM for this fun-fill holiday extravaganza. Register to join Santa for brunch at Cooper City High School on December 14 at 10:00 AM, by contacting the Community Center at (954)434-4300 #233. The holiday event calendar closes with our Holiday Movie in the Park event (film to be announced) at 6:00 PM on December 20 for a relaxing family evening during the holiday rush. On January 18 at 5:30 PM, join us for another Eat to the Beat at the Suellen Fardelmann Sports Complex, where food trucks and great music provide the perfect backdrop for family fun. Touch-A-Truck will be held on Saturday, January 25 at 9:00 AM, also at the Suellen Fardelmann Sports Complex. Kids are invited to see, touch and experience fire trucks, police cars and a variety of the heavy equipment vehicles that awaken their curiosity and stimulate their senses. I look forward to seeing you at our community events and speaking with you, any time. I can be reached at (954)434-4300 #260 or at Mayor_Ross@ coopercityfl.org. Join me for over a nice game of chess on the third Saturday of each month at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Mayor’s Chess Challenge.

I

n thIn the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-seven years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the year-round effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” According to FeedingAmerica.org, 18.2% of children in Broward County, roughly 73,950 are in a food insecurity situation. 36% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. Therefore, in addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, they make an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that are given out to families in need from our local schools throughout the year. They also start each school year off by providing well-stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies. This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 200 public and private schools are

By Margot Lyons Puleri

involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families (approximately 10,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time. Distribution sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the weeks’ worth of groceries and a Thanksgiving Turkey and all the trimmings or a gift card, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the Harvest Drive Boutiques so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High School and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and

shoes, books and household items are most in need by these families. After decades of orchestrating and honing the details and operation of Harvest Drive, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Harriet White, Amy Freund, Tanja Ylenius, Karen Navarrete, Holly Stracquadaine, all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee. The compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate is inspirational. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the

AROUND TOWN

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and nonperishable food you are able to give. • Donate food for our volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word! Harvest Drive would like to give a special thank you to the following sponsors: Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Children’s Services Council, The Jim Moran Foundation, A+ Mini Storage, Ultimate Software, Publix Super Market Charities, Food For All, Michael Freedland, Bob Harms, 100+ Women Who Care, Castle Management, 2 Men And A Truck, Broward County Schools, and Chick-fil-A Davie North.

Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

Radio Control Hobbies for the Whole Family

aving a radio control hobby is fun for people of all ages and a great way to relieve stress, a creative outlet, an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people. But what you probably didn’t know is that it can also have a wide variety of benefits for children, from enhancing their cognitive abilities to developing the social and emotional aspects of their lives. Playing with radio-controlled devices is very helpful for kids’ cognitive development. First, building RC cars, boats or planes, and maneuvering them through obstacles require the use of kids’ fine motor skills, which helps develop their hand-eye coordination and problem-solving abilities. Also, radio control devices teach kids about robotics, mechanics, building and designing, as well as mathematics, physics, and simple engineering dynamics around velocity and mass. Radio control hobbies are also great for getting kids to play outdoors, interact with

other children, and compete in a healthy way. You can find exciting new places, parks, fields and lagoons to explore when searching for the perfect place to play. There are also many RC clubs and gatherings on weekends and at the racetracks, which gives kids a way to make new friends and develop social skills. Even when playing with RC devices at home, kids can bond with siblings and parents, spending quality time together, which has a significant impact in kids’ emotional health. So, if you are now thinking about getting your kids into the exciting world of RC, Goat Hobbies is the place to go. Since we opened our first store in Florida in 2016, we are dedicated to sharing our love of RC with the community, and it is our goal to provide fun, innovative products and the best customer service. Visit us at any of our two locations, or call us for more information, and we will be happy to help you.

n 1991 with just 15 children the David Posnack Jewish Community Center launched Camp Giborim, the special needs division of the center’s traditional summer day camp. As word of mouth and happy, grateful testimonials from Giborim campers and parents spread, Giborim enrollment blossomed— this summer surging to over 150 campers, ages 3 to 22, and limited only by space and staff constraints. Staff, parents and volunteers recognized the need for a year-round program of innovative and life-altering activities for children, teens and adults with special needs with a wider range of ages that could participate. After reaching out to local organizations and professionals and receiving an outpouring of support and steadily increasing demand from the special needs population, in 2017 Giborim U (enthusiastically called Gib U) was born. The Gib U program is open to individuals regardless of ethnicity, race, faith or gender with varying disabilities that include autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, Angelman and Smith-Magenis syndromes among others. Membership to the J is not required to participate in Gib U. Gib U offers enrichment courses in fitness, weight and circuit training, Spinning®, basketball, yoga, tennis, cooking, karate, swimming, arts and crafts, drawing and painting, dance, film and visual arts, theater, music, gardening and a variety of life skills. “Gib U courses build self-esteem, increase a sense of belonging and encourage friendships,” said Debbie Lombard, Giborim director. “In Hebrew the word Giborim means heroes. The staff and volunteers get so inspired by interacting with the students and watching their determination. They truly are our heroes.” Through courses that focus on life skills activities, personal care, computer skills, employment skills and basic finance, students learn independence. The life skills courses are supported by a grant from Jewish Federation of Broward County.

“Our cooking for daily living course teaches students basic cooking and preparation skills. The recipes have a short list of ingredients, are easy to work with and may be recreated at home,” said Arlene Abrams, Giborim U administrator. “Our daily fundamentals life skills course teaches students how to do household chores, choose and care for clothing, use money and go grocery shopping. The course helps them become more self-sufficient.” In addition to offering the courses, Gib U coordinates monthly socials, both on and off campus, to increase socialization skills. At the completion of each Gib U session, which lasts between 10 and 11 weeks, the students are recognized with a celebration for their accomplishments. The response from families has been awe-inspiring. Missy Longman, whose daughter participates in the camp and Gib U and is this year’s co-chair, says that her daughter is so excited to go. “She’s happy, and I see such a difference in her since she started going. She takes karate, dance and yoga and can’t wait to try new things. Gib U is not just a program, it’s a family.” In 2018 Giborim U was selected as the “Outstanding Program” at a JCCA National Biennial in Memphis, TN from a field of more than 30 nominees. “Receiving this award was the icing on the cake,” said Dr. Diane Wilen, DPJCC board chair, who with Beth A. Allen, co-chaired the committee that developed the Gib U program. “The lay leaders, staff, volunteers and the participating families all worked so hard to make the program a success.” First-time participants for Giborim U must meet the David Posnack JCC and Giborim U admissions requirements as determined by a completed intake process. Intake interviews are available by appointment. For more information, course descriptions or to make an intake appointment, call Debbie Lombard at 954.434.0499, ext. 208 or visit giborimu.org. The David Posnack JCC is located at 5850 S. Pine Island Road in Davie.

This is an open invitation

to you to come out and join me in the new Cooper City Walking Club. In partnership with the Senior Advisory Board and Recreation’s Adult Programs Division. Let’s put our best foot forward to ensure that Cooper City is a healthier city, one step at a time. The walking club serves as the foundational program from which we hope to establish a comprehensive, citywide wellness initiative that incorporates exercise, nutrition and healthy living. • Walking is one of the best things you can do for your body and for your health. • Walking burns calories. • Walking can reduce your risk of heart disease. • Walking lowers your bad cholesterol. • Walking helps reduce the risk of, and aids in the management of type 2 diabetes. • Walking reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at 6:30 PM, we began this journey at Flamingo West Park, and we look forward to our future weekly walks. In future months, I envision our group of walkers growing larger as we formalize our program and seek community sponsorship. My invitation remains open to everyone, and I will continue to be present as my schedule allows. We have designed t-shirts that will be issued to the first 50 participants in the walking club. Bring your kids, your parents and your friends. Everyone is welcome to walk at their own pace for as long as they would like. Join me at the nature preserve at Flamingo West Park on Wednesday evenings at 6:30PM, near the playground at the southwest corner of the park. As darkness begins to fall earlier, we will likely move our walking path to the lighted sidewalks that surround the football and soccer fields, as the gates to the nature preserve are locked at sundown. Let’s get healthier Cooper City!

A trip to the library can help your child build a lifelong love of books,

reading and learning. Libraries have books, movies, videogames and more on their shelves, and it doesn’t cost anything to borrow them from the library. You can also read and listen to books online for free with your library card, which is free for anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Broward County. Reading together sets an example for your child and shows that you believe reading is important. Books “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss Reading to your child for at least 15 minutes every day, starting from birth, is important to your child’s healthy development and future success in school. Children who are read to regularly, show more activity in the parts of their brain that help with reading comprehension and understanding stories. Even the youngest baby loves being held and hearing the voice of their family members as they read a book aloud. Your local library has more books than any one person could afford to buy, and anyone can borrow the books for free. With so many books to choose from, it’s fun and easy for young children to discover new favorite stories. Librarians are dedicated to building diverse collections, so books can serve as windows (letting children see other cultures) and mirrors (so children see themselves reflected in the books they read). Children learn about different cultures, customs, religions and living situations in their neighborhood and around the world by reading books that reflect diversity. Librarians “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Mr. Rogers Libraries are more than just books; it’s the people inside the library who make it a welcoming space for children and families and connect them to the information they need. From the librarians who help your child choose their next favorite book, to the workers who help you check out books, people who choose to work in libraries are dedicated to helping. Most librarians have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.); Youth Services (or Children’s) Librarians specialize in serving children and families. Stop by the Reference Desk at your local library and say hello! Storytime “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss Story times are more than entertaining – they help develop important pre-reading and early literacy skills while encouraging a lifelong love of books by singing, talking, reading and playing together. Librarians share their favorite stories and help families pick out books to read at home. Activities and free play at the end of story time encourages conversation, builds vocabulary and gives adults and children a chance to make new friends. Children tell us stories long before they learn to read. Story time gives them a place to learn the art of sharing stories and lets them know that their stories are important.

Play “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” - Fred Rogers Many libraries have an interactive play area with puzzles, puppets and props designed to encourage exploration and parent/child interaction. Play fosters children’s imaginations and encourages cooperation while developing early literacy skills. Play helps children express feelings, and allows children to think out loud about experiences. Playing with puppets helps children develop narrative skills and learn sequencing (stories happen in an order: first, next, last). Toy kitchens and plastic food promote healthy nutrition, help children learn about other cultures, give children new words (zucchini, eggplant) and encourage creativity. Puzzles improve hand-eye coordination and encourage children to think and solve problems. Through interactive play, children are encouraged to play together cooperatively and empowered to be responsible. These activities help build connections in your child’s brain, especially from birth to age 3. Through the shared experiences and resources found at the library, parents and caregivers can encourage their children to value reading and become lifelong learners. According to the latest research from the Kids & Family Reading Report, 95% of parents agree “every community needs to have a public library.” Have you visited your local library lately? Stop by, say hi to your librarians, and let us help you build your child’s love of books. The Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library, Research, Information Technology Center is a unique joint-use library serving the residents of Broward Countyas well as NSU students, faculty, and staff members. HELPING CHILDREN WITH DIVORCE C

hanges in family structure can have varying effects on a family member, family unit, and extended family environment. While there are many factors that can lead to separation or divorce, the question often asked is how we can support our children as they cope and adjust to the change. This includes reducing further avoidable distress. An import caveat is understanding that some individuals or families experience a sense of relief in this process due to the reduction in conflict within the home (emotional, verbal, or physical). Negative effects include, confusion, anxiety, shame, guilt, fear, anger, isolation, depression, mistrust, and withdrawal. The following guidelines serve as a start to managing separation and/or divorce. • INCREASING AWARENESS: Knowing your strengths, limitations, personal boundaries and emotional cues can help you to feel prepared to manage stress and unexpected issues. Getting into the practice of recognizing physical changes at the onset of emotion can help to mitigate unwanted outbursts or poor decision making. If you are aware that when you get upset, your muscles tend to tighten and/or your heart begins to race, it can become a powerful signal to take a step back and acknowledge your emotions to reduce distress for yourself and your children. This is especially important if you are speaking to your ex-partner in front of your children and the conversation begins to get heated. • HELP YOUR CHILDREN: First, by modeling the behavior for them. Second, by beginning to acknowledge and validate their emotions. Your awareness of your child’s behavior can help you to step in and provide them with healthy coping skills to manage their distress. Always keep in mind, you may not agree with how or why your child is upset but you can help them through the emotion by validating their experience. This helps a child to feel heard and valued for who they are. • SELF-CARE: The age-old example of placing the oxygen mask on yourself before helping your child or others in an airplane emergency stands true in general but even more so in the event of a separation or divorce. Making sure you are getting adequate rest, eating well, exercising, and taking time for yourself. If you are tired or overwhelmed and your child comes home with a slight problem, your reaction to them and the problem will likely be exaggerated as compared to being well rested and level-headed. Keeping up with school demands, work demands, and maybe life in general, can be trying. Give yourself the foundation to take on these challenges as well as the challenges involved in a separation and divorce.

By Dr. Kelly Santandrea & Dr. David Yudell

• STRUCTURE AND ROUTINE: People perform better with structure. Children rely on their

caregivers to provide them with structure until they can apply it themselves. From birth, we rely on our parents to teach and model structure so we can regulate and have a certain level of expectation about what is to come. When change is happening, maintaining structure and routine is imperative in order to control distress. When time-sharing, routine and structure should be as similar as possible if not identical. If attainable, expectations for homework, chores and bedtime before the separation should continue after the separation and carry across to both homes. If the child can learn to expect what is acceptable in both homes, disorganization and disruption can be reduced. This is for the benefit of the child as well as for each parent. Having a conversation between parents can help this if we are to keep the child’s well-being as a priority. • COMMUNICATION: Communication between parents is imperative and if it cannot be done in a healthy helpful manner there are other options to consider. Programs like Talking Parents or Family Wizard can help maintain communication regarding the child. If you are aware that communication is problematic, make it a general rule that messages cannot be passed through the child and any communication between parents should focus on the child not on the behavior of a parent or how one feels about the other parent. Legal support such as an Attorney, mediator or Guardian ad Litem may be another option should this not be possible.

One of my strongest recommendations is that the parents find a therapist to begin coparenting sessions. This modality is different from couples counseling / marriage therapy (and often initially seen with resistance after the decision to separate is made). Co-parenting is vastly different. It focuses on communication and unification with the goal of raising the children. It can be scheduled regularly or as needed, but again strongly recommended. • OUTSIDE SUPPORT AND HELP: Moving through life events such as a change in the family unit, whether it be temporary or permanent, can be made easier by reaching out for support and guidance. Asking reliable family members and friends for help can lessen the stress and demand as you move through the change and cope thereafter. There are many support groups within our community available for single and co-parenting parents. Knowing your legal options as well as what professional therapeutic options are available, can be helpful. Services may include learning skills to help your child transition, co-parenting skills and individual therapy are all available for all ages. 2019 - 2020 SCHOOL YEAR

66

SECOND QUARTER

Nova Eisenhower Elementary has been off to an exciting start

this school year! We have started this school year choosing to focus on kindness. Throughout our school, you can see bulletin boards with various messages spreading kindness. From “Let Your Kindness Shine” to “Be the Reason Somebody Smiles Today” our students are seeing positive messages to encourage acts of kindness all day long. Choose Peace Week was also observed from September 20-27 and the focus was to celebrate peace and inclusiveness. This focus helped us and our students create a safe environment where all students feel included. We started the week by wearing green to increase awareness about peace. In our classrooms we talked about what peace means, made a peace pledge, and learned a way to say hello in another language. In addition, all students took part in decorating paper hands with words and pictures that represented peace to them. Our wonderful guidance counselor, Ms. Adams, plans to use these hands to create a mural to display in our school. Finally, in celebration of Choose Peace Week and our kindness initiative at Nova Eisenhower Elementary, we set up a “Get Caught Being Kind!” box in our media center. All week, students and staff submitted acts of kindness they observed. We are all anxiously awaiting for these kind acts to be shared on the Nova News throughout the upcoming weeks. We are so happy to have started our school year on a positive note and cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

I

f you haven’t walked onto the campus of Cooper City Elementary School lately, you are in for a real treat! It all started last year, when a partnership developed between Rebecca Rinella, the Girl Scouts and Cooper City Elementary School. The koi pond had become overgrown and the koi fish were eaten by raccoons one Thanksgiving weekend; perhaps the raccoons needed a fancy dinner as well! “One of the primary reasons my daughter and I joined Girl Scouts seven years ago, was the many opportunities to give back to the community and to make the world a better place. I am so excited to spearhead this project! The outpouring of support from the community and our volunteers has been amazing. The Scouts love getting their hands dirty, digging in the dirt, removing weeds, trimming back the foliage, releasing ladybugs and planting beautiful flowers that not only attract butterflies, but are also here for the students and staff to enjoy. The Scouts are learning that with hard work and teamwork, we feel a sense of accomplishment and our hearts are full,” said Rebecca. Eager to get started, the Girl Scouts jumped right into the pond area and restored it back to its former greatness by pulling weeds, planting butterfly attracting foliage, and adding their own little touches to revamp our new educational area. Students, teachers and friends can now sit amongst nature’s beauty and read together, observe scientific properties, or just enjoy each other’s company! When word got out on CC Buzz that Buddy Benches were needed to kick off our Start with Hello Program, the Girl Scouts fundraised, researched, and built two Buddy Benches for our primary and

eeping up with its tradition of excellence, Cooper City High School is brimming with exciting updates and a fresh new curriculum, as a Cambridge International School. Staff and students alike, are excited about what the 2019-2020 school year holds in store; it is certain to be filled with engaging and rigorous activities, not to mention brilliant studentship. While summer waned and September loomed, CCHS began a new tradition of Cowboy Pride: The Cowboy Corral. The first event of its kind, the Cowboy Corral offers new students a day where they can ease into the school year, meet new friends, and become informed about school pride, events, activities, policies and procedures. The event included team activities, a scavenger hunt, tours, and opportunities to connect with other incoming Cowboys. Student leadership representatives were on hand to answer questions, calm nerves, and share their perspectives on why CCHS rocks! This event was an excellent way for new students to become acclimated to their new surroundings before beginning the year’s curriculum. Speaking of curriculums, in addition to well established College Board Advanced Placement offerings, there is a new advanced honors program in town: Cambridge International! Part of the University of Cambridge in England, this amazing program has been received with open arms and great excitement. Cambridge Assessment International Education (AICE) prepares students for life, helping them develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. AICE Cambridge coursework is officially underway at CCHS, and stakeholders are

intermediate students. Not only are the benches a work of art, but the girls also developed and starred in a video to explain to our local students how and why the benches should be used. When you look out on the playground, you will always see friends (old and new) sitting together! Of course, word spread once again, and the Girl Scouts noticed our student/teacher patio area could use a bit of TLC. Theresa Fredrich, one of our favorite substitutes at CCES, knew that this project was important, as her daughter’s Girl Scout troop from over 20 years ago had painted an original mural that needed a touch up. Obtaining donations of paint from Home Depot, Theresa and her team restored the mural back to its original beauty. The Scouts were extremely fortunate to have an amazing team of parents from CCES come together to take out old foliage and plant new foliage, all through donations from local partners. Commissioner Meltzer also got involved and provided some sound advice as to how to keep our new design well hydrated and nourished. Principal Monica Schlosser says, “Nothing is better than the community coming together and giving back to our students. As a former Girl Scout myself, and with both of my daughters going through the program, I understand the need to support our children by giving them space to be creative and work out their project designs.” Through partner donations, parents donating their time on Saturdays, and love for Cooper City Elementary School, three natural preserves were created for students and staff to enjoy year-round. Congratulations to our local Girl Scout Troops! You are always welcome here at Cooper City Elementary School, where we are all “Growing Better Together”!

digging deep, thinking globally, making connections, and writing to learn. The courses offered aim to enhance student success by providing a framework of critical thinking that promotes a balanced learning approach across a wide array of study. Designed to individualize the learner’s school experience, the program allows students to select coursework of interest while working toward earning the prestigious AICE Diploma. This year’s Cambridge AICE offerings include: Global Perspectives, Sociology, Thinking Skills, Marine Science, English General Paper, English Language, European History, International History and Media Studies; what’s more, the school will continue to build and grow on the base courses from year to year. As a result, student interest has flourished, yielding high level thinking, transformation of text, worldly analysis, and connectivity between courses. In other news, students, faculty and staff recently wrapped up Peace Week, which was led by our Multicultural Club, Unity in Diversity. This incredible program was designed to promote cultural understanding, kindness to others, and respect for differences. During Peace Week, CCHS’s student body came together as one and showcased ways to make our world a place of peace, unity, love, respect, and compassion. Each day was designed with different themes and activities so that students could come together and promote a positive school and community culture. Last but not least, as we head into October, the Cowboy community is looking forward to our annual Harvest Drive, one of the many community service projects our students engage in as they selflessly give back. #KindnessThroughHarvest Inspired by a truly awesome beginning, we at CCHS eagerly anticipate a wonderful 2019-2020 school year!

D avie Elementary celebrates the

beginning of the 2019/2020 school year with a look into the future and a reflection of the past few months. Fall brought many fun activities to Davie. We celebrated “International Peace Week” in September which included many fun activities all promoting world peace. October saw the beginning of the Share-A-Pet “Pawsitive” Reading Program at Davie Elementary! This program is designed to provide students the means to improve their reading skills in a supportive atmosphere created by the Share-A-Pet volunteers and therapy dogs. The students enjoy reading to the dogs and the therapy dogs love the attention they receive from

their new Davie Mustang friends! Davie Elementary is very lucky to have our “furry” friends visit the school this year! The next few months will be busy for Davie Elementary. As the year progresses, we are becoming test ready! Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will meet the challenge of the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). We will continue to develop our reading, math, writing and science skills. Our primary grades are working hard to meet the rigors of the State standards through reading, writing and math. We truly are a BIG family – all working together to continue to make Davie Elementary an excellent place to learn!

ova Blanche Forman Elementary School is at it again! We’ve decided to try something new, because that’s what learning and growing is all about. The famed Ron Clark and the Ron Clark Academy (RCA), in Georgia, have developed a special system within their school called a House System, where each house has its own unique set of properties, including: its own colors, symbols, nation of heritage, history and more. So far, RCA’s system has inspired healthy competition, as well as staff and students who are more involved; it has also helped to promote the awareness of the social and emotional needs of students. Our school is extremely fortunate to have educators who are always up for the challenge of trying something new. We’ve been working diligently to replicate the RCA House System within our own institute, for the benefit of both students and teachers. During a lively sorting ceremony, students were selected to join one of four houses:

By: Russell W. Schwartz, Principal, Nova Blanche Forman Elementary School

Altruismo, the house of givers; Amistad, the house of friendship; Isibindi, the house of courage; Reveur, the house of dreamers. Each house is represented by a color, chant, and motto that all students are responsible for learning. One of the main results from the House System that we have seen, is that regardless of grade level or teacher, students are bonding and looking out for one another; this is essential in the world that we live in today. We never want to risk overlooking the needs of any student and with this amazing system in place, we can continue to build and nurture a culture where all students are known and loved. We are very excited about the future and are eager to see our students grow within our new House System!
