Dear Readers,

While 2019 is well under way and New Year resolutions are still in the forefront of our minds, let’s be mindful of what is really important... MARGOT LYONS PULERI our health, our families and our happiness. Recently I read a blog from a President: Top Spin Publishing, Inc. She found herself empty at the end MargotPuleri@gmail.com of 2018 because she didn’t make time to fill herself up with the things that make her happy. Her words struck a chord in me, and my hopes are that this NIKKI READING Area Publisher letter may in turn strike a chord in you, too. Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches Making time for yourself to accomplish personal goals, get and stay healthy, (954) 296-3285 Direct and be the happy self that is inside every one of us is imperative. When you 1nikkisports@gmail.com give so much to family, work and friends, but forget to renourish your mind, your KIM KADEL body and your soul, you will find yourself spent and, inevitably, not as happy as Area Publisher you could be with your life. • Coral Springs & Parkland Happiness only comes from one place, inside of you. You can’t keep trying • Weston to make everyone else happy (husband/wife, children, boss, parents, siblings, (954) 803-2140 CSPDirectory1@gmail.com etc…) if you, yourself have not done things to make yourself proud, fit, successful or accomplished in the things you love in life. With that being said, I encourage you LINDA LOMBARDI to put in writing a few things that bring you joy and put it somewhere you will see it Territory Representative every day. It may be a few hours at the beach, or a 30 minute walk or run, reading (305) 989-9380 Direct LindaSports1@aol.com a book, or taking a class in something that fires your passion. Whatever it is, make the time to do it. The example you set for your children will be just as important CAROLYN LASS as anything you can teach them from a book. You will find yourself to be a better, Territory Representative happier, more loving person when you take the time to fill yourself back up with the (954) 696-2821 CarolynSports1@aol.com things you love to do. I usually encourage our readers (moms and dads) to find something in our directory ISABEL MAGETTE for the kids, however, in the same vein as what I have suggested, look for yourself, Territory Representative too! In my search for events and classes and programs being offered, I have come (954) 993-0144 isabelmagettesaweston@gmail.com across some great things for adults as well. elay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries. Volunteers give of their time and effort because they believe it’s time to take action against cancer. At Relay For Life events, no one faces cancer alone. We come together every year at more than 2,500 Relay events around the country to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. Each Relay has special events and activities (many throughout the year) just for survivors and their caregivers, so they can connect with others and know there is a strong support system available to them.

Join us at Walter C. Dear Readers,

10

In this New Year, please take a few minutes today to ensure your home has the appropriate number of smoke alarms and that they are properly located and regularly tested and maintained. Smoke alarms have become such a common feature in U.S. homes that it is easy to take them for granted. They are, however, a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give an early warning so it’s faster to get outside. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department has these suggestions to ensure residents remain safe and uninjured when there is a home fire: A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. If possible, smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound. Please remember that a large home may need extra smoke alarms. And, be sure to test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. For more tips, please visit it our website at www.ppines.com. I hope to see everyone at this year’s Kindness event. The City of Pembroke Pines and the School Board of Broward County is inviting everyone to participate in the third annual City of Kindness Event: Kindness/ Forgiveness/Compassion on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Walter C. Young Middle School field, 901 NW 129th Avenue. Held during lunchtime, residents are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch and fully invest themselves in the spirit of peace day. During the Community Peace Meal Picnic, everyone will be encouraged to make random acts of kindness promises, enjoy musical entertainment performed by children from different Pembroke Pines area schools and much more. Families will have an opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere and decorate their Picnic Areas by embellishing their picnic blankets, baskets, backpacks, totes and coolers. Residents and friends may tag their acts of kindness with #PinesIsKind. Did you get your tickets yet? We’re going to celebrate 10 years of Taste of Pines, which has been a favorite event in the City of Pembroke Pines, with each year becoming even more special. Tickets are now on sale for Taste of Pines 2019 which offers participants the opportunity to sample some of the best food Pembroke Pines and surrounding areas has to offer in a fun atmosphere. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2019, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. All proceeds from this event benefit the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System. For more information, please call 954-392-2116. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

t’s not often an opportunity presents itself for a Broadway legend to come to a local performing arts studio and work with young performers; but that’s exactly what took place this past November. Adam Pascal, known for originating the role of Roger in Rent for both the musical and movie, playing the role of Shakespeare in Something’s Rotten, and most recently seen on Broadway in Pretty Woman the Musical, traveled to south Florida to help develop the next generation of Broadway stars. A full day of events was available to students from Broadway Kids Studio, located in the Ridge Plaza in Davie. The first event was a four-hour master class, where Mr. Pascal gave one-on-one critiques on their musical selections. He focused his feedback on ensuring these young performers understood their character’s motivation and portrayed a believable story through their vocal performance. Students and master class observers had the opportunity to ask questions, take notes, and get autographs. “Having the opportunity to work one-on-one with such a highly recognized performer gave me more insight. Adam Pascal was so great to work with. He had us sing through our pieces multiple times to make sure we implemented the objectives. He was so kind and humble and I’m so extremely grateful to have been able to participate in such an amazing master class,”

said Zach Poore, a high school Senior, who is pursuing a musical theater degree in the Fall. Following the master class was a pre-concert VIP meet and greet allowing participants to spend time with Mr. Pascal in a more informal setting. The day ended with an intimate concert where students shared the stage with the one and only Adam Pascal. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was realized by all those who were lucky enough to secure a spot in this sold out event. Mr. Pascal was also blown away by local high school Sophomore, Mariangeli Collado, who he provided with the following feedback, “…performed perfectly, I would not not change a thing.” Regardless of experience or ability, every student gained valuable insight and memories. Maisy Surman, a high school sophomore said, “My best experience was getting to sing with him. He also taught us about his experiences in theater and film. Those tips really influenced me to chase my dreams and pursue what I love. It was great. “ Mr. Pascal emphasized to live in the moment and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, to seize the day. “No day but today” -Jonathan Larson

Why Doesn’t My Child Listen to Me? And What Can I Do About It? By Dr. Dovid Kirzner and Dr. David Yudell

“D aniel! Daniel!! Daniel!!! Where are you?!” “Mom, I’m coming! What do you want?!”

“It’s about time! How many times do I have to call your name for you to come here? When I call you, I expect that you listen immediately!” “Mom, you’re so annoying! I was in middle of playing Fortnite with my friends! And no, I did not walk the dog, clean my room, or throw out the garbage; I’ll get to my chores later!” “Daniel! I’ve had enough with your utter disrespect and disregard for the house rules! You’re grounded from using any electronics for the next two weeks!” Does this parent-child interaction sound remotely familiar? If you find yourself engaging in similar interactions with your child, what distressing thoughts and emotions do you experience during these exchanges? When this interaction occurs prior to sending your child off to school, how do you feel about yourself while working or grocery shopping in preparation for dinner? When this interaction occurs prior to bedtime, what thoughts cross your mind when you finally manage to retire for the night? According to Dr. Russel Barkley, many ineffective, conflictual parent-child interactions are due to The Coercive Behavior Cycle in which parents and children often engage. This pattern of communication involves parents’ increased display of irritation and annoyance towards their children for their continued noncompliance. Ultimately, parents force their children to comply through physical intimidation, making threats, or raising their voice. Alternatively, parents may surrender to their children’s defiant noncompliance and complete the task themselves. When responding to our children accordingly, we inadvertently reward their negative behaviors and model the notion that defiance pays off!

In an effort to break this cycle, we first have to refrain from acquiescing to our children’s noncompliance. Therefore, when making a request to your children plan for them to either comply or experience a negative consequence. It is okay to give them an extra chance or an extra moment to respond, but avoid asking more than twice. Lastly, when you do tell them the consequence, keep it reasonable and follow through. This is a major downfall that many parents face – over punishing or empty threats. Another concept to consider involves checking in with oneself prior to asking your children to do something. Consider whether you have the energy to follow through and if you have a consequence planned. Both concepts are very important to consider so you do not walk into a situation ill prepared. Alternatively, you may want to make a smaller request that can be handled with less chance for failure. Creating appropriate consequences takes planning, experience, help or all three. (to be continued…) We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrKirzner@DrYudell.com or DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

FAMILY HEALTH REMEMBER WATER SAFETY • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments • Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level • Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water

PARENTS NEED TO TALK TO THEIR CHILD ABOUT WATER SAFETY. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO START WITH: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing to experience the sensation.

ENVIRONMENTS • Do not deactivate alarms • If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances • Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use • Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm • Do not deactivate alarm • Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques • Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training • Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained • 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health (954) 759-7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy (954) 346-1774 • American Heart Association 1(800) 242-8721 • American Red Cross 1(800) RED-CROSS

hile being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of injury and death to children from 1 to 4 years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water.

embroke Lakes joined other schools around the globe during Microsoft’s Skype-a-Thon. This global learning event brings classrooms together annually to not only deepen students’ understanding of the world beyond their classroom walls, but also encourages critical thinking. During this 48-hour event, some students held a mystery Skype with an expert in a museum in Wyoming to learn about fossils. Other students held a Skype call with a Park Ranger in Yellowstone National Park, while others virtually visited Lisbon Zoo in Portugal and others spoke with a geologist about the effects of severe weather on South Florida beaches. “One of the most rewarding parts of Skype calls are when our students can ask experts questions that they are naturally curious about. Watching the progression of formulating an appropriate question, to having the courage to stand up and virtually ask an expert a question is like magic!” Mrs. Selevan, second grade teacher, shared. Our students also had Skype calls with authors. One class held a Skype call with Sean Fay Wolfe, author of The Elementia Chronicles. Mr. Wolfe started creating his book, with characters based on Minecraft, when he was only 14. Another class held a Skype call with Peter Raymundo, author of Third Grade Mermaid. Students were excited to purchase his book at our Book Fair, the following week. Mr. Raymundo then personally signed each student’s book! Pembroke Lakes classrooms “traveled” many virtual miles during the Skype-a-Thon. For every 400 virtual miles traveled by Skype-a-Thon participants, Microsoft donated to WE, an organization that provides a free service-learning program. “Not only did our students benefit from these enriching experiences, but they also contributed to a great cause,” Marsha Wagner, Principal, stated. Pembroke Lakes Elementary is located at 11251 Taft Street. The main school number is (754) 323-6950. Mrs. Marsha Wagner is the school’s principal.

In the world of careers and significant job positions, the most creative and intuitive

minds are highly appreciated. From a teacher who aims to make an impact on a student’s education to doctor who strives to save lives, the nation’s dedicated task force continues to influence and inspire many to follow in their footsteps. Many begin looking for a career as soon a they reach high school and at the same time many apply for part time jobs to help them focus on their future career path, including the students at West Broward High School. According to the 2014 Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1 in 4 students actively enrolled in a high school currently have a part time job. These numbers are reflected among the students at West Broward as many engage in jobs that not only aim to bring in a steady flow of income, but also nurture their minds, preparing them for a future of work. The many courses and resources offered at the school also motivate the young minds to set goals and venture out on their own. From the financial and economics classes offered to the aid that the school’s own job coach provides, the students leave high school well equipped to face the task force head on. “I work with students who have plans for a future career path and I help them make the steady transition from high school,” said West Broward job coach De’Erika Carter. “While they are still in high school, we help them gain paid employment. We meet with each student and develop a different one-on-one plan on how to approach their future because each student is unique in their thinking process.”

By: Omolola Suleiman, Student

West Broward has a wide-range of Career Training Education (CTE) classes that provide benefits to student enrolled such as connecting them to jobs as soon as they complete high school and providing them with skills that could be taken out into the real world. The CTE classes distinguish the school from the seemingly ordinary public school, and doesn’t require any of the students to pay for receiving any certification or training. Students can try their hands in the school’s culinary classes fully equipped with professional kitchens or engage with dogs and other animals in the schools veterinary program. “West Broward’s Emergency Medical Responders class and Anatomy & Physiology course helped me with understanding the skills of my job position,” said one senior working as a Clinical Assistant at Pediatric Associates. “I had gotten the job because of some of the teachers on campus. They helped me fill out the forms and even prepared me for the interview. Now I call patient’s, do basic vitals, perform hearing and vision exams, and fill out paperwork.” “I started my own automotive detailing business in which I restore the paint jobs and factory standards of cars,” said senior JROTC cadet Devin Perez. “Even though something like automotive detailing isn’t really taught in school, the financial algebra classes at West Broward have helped me with managing my money. Working alongside students at school also has helped me, but I had to learn proper time management to balance everything.” West Broward High School is located at 500 NW 209th Avenue. The main school number is (754) 323-2600. Mr. Brad Fatout is the school’s principal.

rincipal Susan Sasse has built what she affectionally calls her “Dream Team” at Pines Lakes Elementary. Student achievement results reinforce Sasse’s claims. In the six years that she has been the Principal, she has moved the school from an “F” rated school to a “B” under Florida’s rigorous accountability rules. According to this turnaround Principal, “recruiting and retaining high impact teachers has the most direct link to academic success for our students.” Principal Sasse and her team reached out to Flanagan High School teacher Vanessa Pena to develop a partnership centered around early exposure of high school students that may one day aspire to become teachers. Ms. Pena leads the charge by helping her high school students develop lesson plans, classroom management strategies and techniques to meet the needs of students with unique learning styles. Each week, Flanagan High School students come to Pines Lakes Elementary and work with experienced teachers. “The teachers at Pines Lakes Elementary have welcomed us with open arms and have served as great role models in the classroom.” -Noelia Rosario, 2018 UTAP Class President

T

he school year has been a great one so far at Pembroke Pines Elementary. Our students have been engaged in a plethora of activities both in and out of the classroom that have added value to their educational experience. Our VPK and K students attended swimming lessons at the Miramar Aquatic Center, where they learned about water safety. 1st graders visited Tradewinds Park, where they learned all about farm animals. 2nd grade students studied Native American Tribes and had a showcase to present their final projects. 5th grade students visited JA Biz Town. Here they were able to apply lessons learned in class to real world experiences. The Rotary Club of Miramar-Pembroke Pines gifted each student a book on Thursday December 6th. This was an awesome experience for our students as they were able to choose a book of their choice from a wide variety. We thank the Rotary Club for their generosity to our students. We offered fall clubs from September to December. Students were able to participate in Art Club, Chorus, Little Chefs, Dancing Pirates, Latin Dance, Chess, Storytime, Pirate Stackers, SECME and Yearbook. On December 13th, we had our Fall Club Performances and the Latin Dancers, Dancing Pirates, Pirate Stackers and Chorus put on an amazing show for our parents. Little Chefs provided refreshments for the night.

Being a part of the Urban Teacher Academy Program (UTAP) is truly an inspiring experience for Flanagan High School students. In this program, “Utappers” craft fun and educational activities for their students. Covering new topics each week ranging from vowels to sentence structure exposes students to lessons they immediately benefit from. These lessons introduce topics that will be covered throughout the year and that will help the students in the future. Our Teen Trendsetters get the opportunity to work one-on-one, practicing their reading skills and motivating third grade students to do their best. While working with these elementary students, high schoolers get a closer look into what being a teacher entails and what it feels like to serve the community. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that both mentors and mentees will remember for the rest of their lives. Principal Sasse looks forward to continuing this worthwhile partnership for years to come! Pines Lakes Elementary is located at 10300 Johnson Street. The main school number is (754) 323-7100. Ms. Susan Sasse is the school’s principal.

The second half of the year continues to be just as exciting at the first half. Our Spring Clubs are in full swing. Our SECME club is busy preparing for their competition in March. Our students are working on creating a logo for Pines Village, the community in which our school is located. Pirate Camp has started, and students are able to receive additional support in ELA, Math and Science as we prepare for the upcoming Florida Standards Assessment. We are continuing our partnership with Apollo Middle and their Latinos in Action. The students visit our campus twice per week and provide mentorship to select students. Our faculty and staff are work diligently each day to ensure that we are accomplishing our mission of providing a quality education as we prepare our students for either college or a career. Our stakeholders continue to support us in this endeavor. Pembroke Pines Elementary School welcomes the partnership of all stakeholders. If you would like to either volunteer or become a school partner, please contact the school. Pembroke Pines Elementary is located at 6700 SW 9th Street. The main school number is (754) 323-7000. Ms. Natasha Bell is the school’s principal.

he Ecology Club at Silver Trail Middle School gives students the opportunity to meet and interact with others who share a common interest. The club’s motto is: “WE STRIVE TO BE CARING, RESPONSIBLE, AND RESPECTFUL STEWARDS OF THE EARTH”. This motto aligns with the reason Aaquil Lewis joined the Ecology Club which is because he wants to learn more about butterflies and plants, and how they function. The purpose of the Ecology Club is to educate and raise awareness of local ecology. The students are responsible for maintaining and improving the current Butterfly Garden, which has been in place for over 8 years. Sayid Lopez enjoys being a part of the club because he gets to interact with plants and insects. This year, the focus is on creating

ines Middle School recently held its’ annual Literacy Workshop. Under the skill and finesse of Ms. Spotts and the Language Arts teachers, students broke out into stations and worked on various strategies to become better readers and writers. In cooperation with Flanagan High School, Flanagan Junior and Senior students from Urban Teacher Academy Program (UTAP) joined each group and assisted where needed. At Pines Middle, all students are invited to be a part of our Literacy initiative and participate in the Reading Revolution Book Club during lunches. On November 7th, students participating in the 7th grade Book Club had a chance to talk via Skype with the author of the book Ghost Boys. Students met weekly during their lunch period to discuss this thought provoking book and develop questions for the author. On November 7th they got to ask those questions to author Jewell Parker Rhodes during our Skype visit. Parents and students also participated in our Literacy Night on January 31st. This is the highlight of our Literary year includes our Scholastic Book Fair, informational sessions for parents, displays of student work. The night finishes in the Café as we all cheer on the finalists in our Scripps Spelling Bee. As language arts students honed their literacy skills, the eighth grade science

School holds a Knight’s Festival each year. The festival is hosted in November for all grade levels. It is put together by the phenomenal PTSA. To participate in this event, students are asked to fundraise $30 for the school. They are welcome to turn in more money if possible. All of the money raised during Knight’s Festival is used for the benefit of the school and students. Firstly, the money collected is used to fund electives and core classes. The PTSA counts the money donated. Then, they form a budget to encompass the costs of additional assets for the school. These include technology such as laptops and printers. A portion of the budget also goes to the Walter C. Young Music Program, and the money is used to supply and restore instruments for children. However, students that provide $30 or more for Knight’s festival also get to have a fun-filled day with music and entertainment. The day includes going to the field for carnival games and sports, and to the gym for a dance. There are opportunities for kids to win prizes and enter raffles. students experimented with physical and chemical change. In small groups they used their detective skills to hypothesize, make predictions, and record observations as they combined substances and noted reactions. Many 7th grade Science Students attended our Family Science Night hosted by Ms. Times-Marshall and Ms. Zissen. Parents competed with their students in a Scavenger Hunt, Bingo, and a Kahoot quiz. Science students also honed their skills as they competed in Pines first Science Brain Bowl. What about electives? Our National Middle School Cadet Corp is preparing for their annual Spring Competition. Our art students continue to produce amazing artwork which is displayed around the school in a variety of formats and our over 200 Band students gave an awesome Winter Concert which had our auditorium packed to capacity. And finally, Ms. Hechavarria’s Drama classes are busy preparing for their Black History Through The Decades program on the night of February 28th. They will be focusing on the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, with skits, dramatic interpretations, and songs. Pines students will continue to rock the curriculum through the New Year 2019. Pines Middle School is located at 200 NW Douglas Road. The main school number (754) 323-4000. Mr. Carlton Campbell is the school’s principal.

out free of cost, along with drinks. If students are still hungry, they can buy more treats to eat at the field. Lastly, they can also purchase glow sticks at the dance to light up their moods. Some of the activities at the field are football throw, Tic Tac Toe, Ring Toss, and Dunk it. Students can play unlimited games to increase their chances of winning prizes. This year, we also had a professional Zumba teacher come teach people Zumba and dance. After two amazing hours on the field, the kids are taken to the dance. There, a DJ plays upbeat and trendy music as the students enjoy themselves. The theme of the dance this year was Mardi Gras, so light-up masks were also given out. The students happily stayed at the dance for around an hour and a half. Knight’s Festival is extremely helpful for Walter C. Young because of the many doors it opens. The money raised from the festival improves and funds the school. Further, it allows students to let loose and party. It is a truly beneficial event for both students and adults. WC Young is located at 901 NW 129th Avenue. The main school number is (754) 323-4500. Mr. Chip Osborn is the school’s principal.

SCHOOLS For many first time voters, this experience is one to be cherished and remembered as a milestone event for years to come. “I got really emotional because my grandparents came here not even knowing the language for a better life. It’s especially crazy because my dad’s side of the family is from Nicaragua and they left during the civil war and there’s another civil war going on right now. It’s a privilege to be able to vote and have a voice,” said Peralta. For senior Mariana Yordan Santiago the importance of the day was not lost. “It felt weird at first because I couldn’t believe that I was old enough to partake in something too important. I thought I was too young and too immature to vote. I had researched everything that was on the ballot and I knew who and what I wanted to vote for. I realized that I had a right to say who should be representing me and my opinions and that it was my job to vote to make sure that my voice was heard.” Instilling the importance of performing ones civic duty in the mind of the next generation has become the responsibility of parents, teachers, and other adults. Hoping to do just this, PPCHS has made the effort to engrain the message in students’ minds and help them become politically aware. “Our motto at Charter is ‘College, Citizenship, and Community”. We hear a lot about college, and that’s good, but we should be creating good citizens and good members of a community and good citizens and good members of a community vote. So we’re just proving our motto,” said Mr. Quigley. Pines Charter High is located at 17189 Sheridan Street. The main school number is (954) 538-3700. Mr. Peter Bayer is the school’s principal.

O

n Tuesday, October 30th, first time voters from PPCHS, West Broward, and Flanagan High School took to the polls to cast their votes in the 2018 midterm elections. “What we know about voting is that the earlier you vote, the more likely you are to vote in the future. The more you are part of the process when you are young, the more likely you are to vote in the future as an adult,” said A.P. Government and Economics teacher Mr. Quigley. Organized by U.S. Government teachers, Mr. Quigley and Ms. Hyacinth, the event featured guest appearances by Mayor Ortis, Commissioner Castillo, and Commissioner Siple. After attending an assembly in the River of Grass auditorium, in which guest speakers empowered students and ensured them that their votes really do matter, everyone trekked across campus to the Southwest Regional Library, where the voting center was located. “After we joined the line, the volunteers took our IDs, scanned them, confirmed we were registered to vote, and then printed our ballots,” senior Camila Peralta said. “Oh my gosh I started crying. I saw the ballot, and it finally set in that I was an adult.” After submitting all their ballots, the teens were cheered on in the voting room, as volunteers and other voters congratulated them on being first time voters. Overwhelmed by emotion and pride in their country, the young voters were satisfied in simply knowing they did their civic duty and that their vote makes all the difference. “When we were in the program on Tuesday, the message they spread made me realize that I could be one of the deciding votes. It was overwhelming to know that I was an adult that can make a change in this country, but they explained the voting process so well that I was comfortable,” senior Leanna Basanta said.

Panther Run Elementary School joined forces with Make-a-Wish Southern

Florida in the month of November to grant a wish to a child with a critical illness in Broward County, Florida. Our official kick-off at school with Make-A-Wish was Tuesday, November 27, 2018. Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in the United States that arranges experiences described as “wishes” to children diagnosed with critical illnesses. In order to qualify for a wish, the child must be between the ages of 2 and 17 years at the time the application is submitted. Wish kids are some of the bravest and sweetest kids you’ll ever know. They wish to work in a pickle factory, become a superhero, go snorkeling, give their baseball team new uniforms, and push all of the buttons in a tall building’s elevator. Their innocence and unexpected wisdom stays with you. A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic, more willing and able to battle their critical illnesses. For many, the wish marks a turning point in the fight against their illnesses. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals say the wish experience works in concert with the medicine to make their patients feel better emotionally and even physically. Please open up your heart and help us help others by giving to this amazing

cause. Please go to www.site.wish.org/goto/pantherrun to donate. Our Panther Run Family will be fundraising throughout this school year to grant a wish to a child in May of 2019. As always, thank you for your support! PIF-WIAMAD! Panther Run Elementary is located at 801 NW 172nd Avenue. The main school number is (754) 323-6850. Ms. Elaine Saef is the school’s principal.

ith the start of the New Year, Huntington Learning Center and Sports & Activities Directory continue to share the achievements of our local Academic Superstars. Jacquelynn F. is a college student at a local college here in South Florida. She first came to Huntington Learning Center Pembroke Pines after struggling with her Personal Finance course. After attending Huntington, she was able to find the guidance she needed to succeed. Through her hard work, dedication and exceptional tutors, Jacquelynn received her degree in December 2018. Congratulations, you did it! Dylan F. is a student who is in his second year of 1st grade. He has been struggling since VPK and therefore, his confidence and motivation were also very low. We are only 40% completed with his program and he has already increased a grade level and surpassed his school teacher’s goals for him. Dylan is writing Dylan F. Marissa T. Jacquelynn F.

sentences and reading on his own for the first time in his life and though we still have a long way to go, that confidence in his abilities is also growing. We are so proud of the progress he has made and excited to see Dylan as he continues to reach his potential. Marissa T. is a junior at University School with a high GPA and determination to go to a top tier school. With hard work and dedication, and instruction she received at Huntington Learning Center in Plantation, she increased her SAT score by 340 points to a 1520! Congratulations! SCHOOLS movement all started. Mrs. Kristy Modia, our club sponsor, chooses our team of 8-10 poets based on performances at our Poetry Jam. In last year’s competition, we placed third in the state; it was a journey none of us will ever forget. The reason we write is to exercise our voice, our thoughts. We know no other way to express ourselves; we are POETS. Our club provides an outlet to express how we feel, where we can speak freely and not be silenced. Once you step onto the stage, whether it be at a competition or in Mrs. Modia’s room, there isn’t anyone cutting you off in the middle of a sentence. We write to be heard; spoken word is a lifestyle. Every school needs a Mrs. Modia. I say this only because I want you to imagine the hundreds of young lives she has touched by encouraging the love for creative writing. Perhaps one day, you will see us performing at an open mic event and recognize us as leaders of the spoken art movement. Flanagan High is located at 12800 Taft Street. The main school number is (754) 323-0650. Mrs. Michelle Kefford is the school’s principal.

riters Ink - the name chosen by Flanagan High School’s poetry club represents how poets “bleed” ink from their souls. At our weekly meetings, we share our pieces aloud and then give one another specific feedback on things we liked, related to, or deeply felt. It’s an open space where students are able to express themselves through writing without the fear of being judged or criticized. We welcome everyone who walks in as if he or she is family - because that’s what we are. Twice a year, we put on a Poetry Jam at our school. All the students are allowed to audition, even those who are not members of poetry club. We normally get many new members after our first Poetry Jam because that’s when students realize what we do and fall in love with our culture - this event is a great way to find new and excited writers! We also participate in Louder Than a Bomb (LTAB), a spoken word poetry slam competition sponsored by the Jason Taylor Foundation. All of the poetry clubs from Florida’s schools that participate are fighting to win a trip to Chicago, where the LTAB

hapel Trail Elementary (CTE) is an “A” rated school. Our amazing events such as Literacy Fair and the Scholastic Book Fair makes Chapel Trail the best place to be! So many books, so little time! Chapel Trail Elementary had an amazing Literacy Night. During Literacy Night parents and families are able to come and enjoy students’ creative work being displayed and purchase books from the Scholastic Book Fair. Teachers and students transformed the school into the Enchanted Forest led by our amazing media specialist, Mrs. Maturell. Hallways were transformed into fairytales with a forest and castles. The children were all so proud of their work! During the Literacy Fair, Kindergarten displayed their work through the books, ‘I Don’t Want a Unicorn’ and ‘Dragons Love Tacos.’ The fantastic first grade team each picked a different fairytale with their class and created projects. Second grade read the story ‘Cinderella’ and wrote about the different versions of the book from around the world. Both third and fourth grade worked together to transform a classroom into an Enchanted Circus inspired by Dr. Seuss ‘If I Ran a Zoo.’ Last but not least, the fabulous fifth graders wrote about the best part of themselves and displayed their work through writing and pictures.

Dash and Dot Robotics to students ages Kindergarten through Fifth grade. The children are learning to program, debug, and problem solve utilizing the robots with the application Blockly. Fundamental mathematics skills are a must as the students program the robots to make shapes, measure speed, and create movement through dance and soccer. Additionally, Lakeside’s Gator Clubs now offers Challenge Island where engineering meets imagination! Friends are challenged with action packed adventure while learning about various geological destinations. In order to increase physical activity, wellness, and cultural awareness students are learning hip hop and Latin dancing and enjoying outdoor basketball. Students further make their imaginations come to life with Lego creations and digital Mine Craft building with 3D blocks within a technological world. Let’s not forget our crafty Artists! Painting with a Twist, Disney Imagineers, and Slime Inventors are having a blast while mixing colors and textures to create wonderful projects! Last, but not least is cooking. This club is filled with future chefs who are not only learning the art of making food recipes, but also learning healthy choices with food grown right here in our student grown garden in the heart of Lakeside! All in all, Lakeside’s Gator Clubs offer opportunities for fun, friendship, and extended learning for everyone! Lakeside Elementary is located at 900 NW 136th Avenue. The main school number is (754) 323-6400. Ms. Kathy May is the school’s principal.

The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge hit this year! At Chapel Trail Elementary, we raised $1,200! This money is from All for Books and is matched by Scholastic. The money raised was given to schools in need as well as students in our school. Each teacher at CTE was given a book for their classroom libraries and a student from each class given a book as well. The staff and students were very excited about this! This year during the Scholastic Book Fair, grandparents had the opportunity to take their grandchildren to purchase books at Chapel Trail in the morning. The grandparents were treated to a fun morning with pastries, coffee, and a photo booth to take pictures with their grandchildren. Many smiles were seen and pictures were taken. The line was out the door to purchase Scholastic books and the children couldn’t contain their excitement! With all these engaging activities, we are teaching our children about the love for reading. With the support of the teachers, parents, and administration we make this possible at CTE. Chapel Trail Elementary is located at 19595 Taft Street. The main school number is (754) 323-5000. Ms. Susie Suarez is serving as the school’s intern principal.

grade. Gang Resistance Education And Training is an evidence-based gang violence prevention program. Officer Donahue visits classrooms on a regular basis to teach our youth about the dangers of violence. In addition to innovative thinking and character building, our children are taking part in physical activities that strengthen their bodies! Physical education and the arts are essential to whole child development! No one knows that better than our very own specials teachers Coach Brodey, Ms. Linero (music), and Mrs. Wixted (art). Each grade level participated in bag races, scooter races, shoe relays, tug-of-war and a whole bunch more! A rewarding aspect of Field Day is watching the children interact with their teammates as they strive to win the races or relays. However, the most rewarding aspect is to see all of the teams congratulating one another as our students practice the character traits of kindness and respect toward each other! We are so very proud of our students here at Silver Palms Elementary! Our chorus performed brilliantly in this year’s Winter Concert! They were just magnificent! We are also so very proud of our students for being chosen to display their artwork at The Children in the Pines Art Show! Way to go Dolphins! Silver Palms Elementary is located at 1209 NW 155th Avenue. The main school number is (754) 323-7450. Ms. Irina Shearer is the school’s principal.

n order to prepare our students to be innovative thinkers and responsible citizens in our global community, here at Silver Palms Elementary, we implemented several programs and activities to inspire students, teachers, parents, and the community to work together to achieve our goals! Furthermore, we strive to engage our students in meaningful learning experiences that motivate them to be leaders and practice the respect and dignity in and out of the classroom. Fostering students innovative thinking is a collaborative effort as parents and teachers are working together to revamp our Science Fair! This year our students are creating their very own inventions! Cultivating the growth of vital science skills is a challenge that our teachers and students embrace! With this goal in mind our teachers are leading the way of change and innovation as they are engaging our students in developing creative thinking and engineering abilities. Each grade level team tailored invention ideas to meet the needs of their students. Fifth graders are busily creating new jean designs and updating everyday items like umbrellas! Students will produce inventions and then they will develop their entrepreneurial skills! Watch out Shark Tank! Here come Silver Palms students! In addition, our community works together to motivate our students to be leaders and practice respect and dignity in all areas of their lives! Character development is everyone’s responsibility! Teachers inspire our students to be responsible citizens in the classroom by modeling positive character traits, engaging students in character building activities, and acknowledging students with model behavior. Our parents are our students’ first teachers! Our resource officer Veronica Donahue does her part by working with students in fifth

ransitioning to middle school may be difficult for our adolescents and though life will bring many challenges to our children, parents will always want to know the answer to “How do I know which middle school is the best for my child?” When searching for a middle school for your child, you need to look for one that offers: • SAFE and CLEAN CAMPUS • PREPARED environment for learning • ACADEMIC excellence • TECHNOLOGICAL advancements • CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and care for self and others Apple Tree Montessori offers all the above and much more. Our 5 acre campus has been completely renovated and has security gates with secured entry doors surrounding the campus. We offer small class sizes in a prepared environment which will challenge your child’s academic abilities and allow them to receive advance level courses that will transfer to high school. Our students will reach their maximum potential and not have to wait for the entire class to catch up. Teachers work closely with students to help them achieve more. Our Middle School students will learn from a curriculum that is carefully structured and integrated to demonstrate the connection among the different subject areas. Every class teaches critical thinking, composition and research skills. History lessons link architecture, the arts, science and technology. Students will master problem solving skills and learn how to collaborate and work together on major projects which is essential in today’s workforce. For 40 years, Apple Tree Montessori has exceeded expectations in academic excellence. Many of our graduates get scholarships to prestigious high schools in the area, such as

American Heritage, Archbishop McCarthy and St. Thomas. Many of our students grow to become Salutatorian and Valedictorians of their high school. This past year, Apple Tree inaugurated a STEM Lab and introduced smart board technologies to our students. We encourage students to create their own architectural designs to build different structures in class. Technology continues to grow in the school and all students use lap tops in class to work on assignments. At Apple Tree, we strive on helping the student develop character. Our community outreach program allows our students to give back to the community thru fundraisers for those in need or those suffering from natural disasters. Service Cords are given to our students for their efforts throughout their middle school years. The school also offers a variety of after school programs. Middle school students may begin to look different and bit older than what you are used to, but they are still young and vulnerable, and want and need adult guidance. The key is they want it in their own timing and on their terms. Our teachers are accessible for every student, every day. Our Middle School emphasizes on individualism and combats the messages of conformity and materialism that are all too prevalent in our world today. Our staff is always here to offer a word of encouragement or a helpful suggestion to our students. Because our class sizes are small, students become part of a family and learn to respect one another. Visit APPLE TREE’s PreK2 – 8th grade newly remodeled campus in SW RANCHES on Dykes Road, and see why this is the BEST SCHOOL for your child. Special affordable ANNIVERSARY RATE are available through May 1st. CALL for a TOUR (954) 252-9250. 6301 SW Dykes Rd. SW Ranches, FL.
