Dear Readers,

10

At a recent Commission Meeting we proclaimed Census 2020 Complete Count Committee Kick-Off Day in our city. We did this because a complete and accurate count is critical for each person and the City of Pembroke Pines. By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. You will have three options for responding: online, by phone or by mail. The 2020 Census marks the first time you’ll have the option to respond online. You can even respond on your mobile device. The Census critically impacts each city, providing current population data which determines the distribution of more than $800 billion of federal funding for state and local infrastructure, highways, schools, hospitals and services. School district boundaries and voting districts are set, and the House of Representatives is reapportioned, etc. It’s not just counting heads, it’s so much more and needs to be accurate. The Census count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. For more information about the 2020 Census, please visit www.ppines.com/ census2020. You will find information and resource links to answer any questions. I hope you all have Taste of Pines on your calendars. This year we are celebrating 11 years of this wonderful event in the City of Pembroke Pines. Sampling delicious foods and beverages, enjoying music and dancing, Taste of Pines will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2020, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. All proceeds from this event benefit the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System. For more information about getting your tickets, please call 954-392-2116. And, calling all budding young artists – students residing in Pembroke Pines and/or attending a Pembroke Pines School or a City art class in grades K-12 – for the 3rd Annual Student Art Competition. Applications and art are due February 3 - March 4, 2020. Winners will be announced at the Student Awards Presentation on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 1 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. For more information, please call 954-961-6067. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

Once revered as one of the most impressive

skills a human could possess, painting has steadily moved towards abstraction and contemporary artists are mesmerized –and, perhaps, preoccupied- by the potential of technology, virtual reality and new media. What relevance do academic drawing and painting techniques hold in the realm of art today? Florida International University’s Frost Professor of Art David Chang is an advocate, teacher, and master in classical painting techniques. While many may disregard these critical methodologies, Chang understands the necessity and power of maintaining these skillsets. Be riveted and awakened as David Chang shares his passion and knowledge of why the classics are still relevant, and how these fundamental techniques can transform your artistic abilities while fostering a new appreciation for the world around you. • 04/11/2020 GESTURAL FIGURE SKETCHING WORKSHOP: 10:00AM-12:00PM. Come to the kindest critique of all where a patient classical master will review your work and provide insight on how to reach your greatest potential. A nice personal experience with a wonderful mentor. For professional and developing artists.

While being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of

injury and death in children ages one (1) to four (4) years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. Here are some ideas to start with: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the easiest and most important water safety conversation to have with your child/children. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out and/or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing in the water to experience the sensation. Remember Water Safety • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is: an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments - Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level - Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water Environments - Do not deactivate alarms - If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances

- Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use - Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm - Do not deactivate alarm - Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques - Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training - Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained - 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health 954.759.7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy 954.346.1774 • American Heart Association 1.800.242.8721 • American Red Cross 1.800.RED.CROSS Community Education Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central 954-357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County 954-467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, 954-377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. ennis shoes eroded from the hot concrete. Legs were straight as performers moved across the parking lot. Hours of practice, rehearsals and re-runs allowed the band of over 100 students to have their most successful year to date. Even as a small 5A band, the West Broward Performance Ensemble made massive strides this season as they earned their first-ever win at the Florida Marching Band State Championships. With extensive practices, their show “Lost in the Fog” marked an important moment in their history. “This has been the hardest working band we’ve had so far,” said band director Dean Calmer. “Since everyone on board is so great, it made the band want to work harder to reach the bar asked of them.” The production’s theme was centered around Mary Poppins. Hand-made props of rooftops and umbrellas established a nostalgic feeling for the audience, and the score was composed of typical marching band and swing music. For choreography, performers did various moves, turns and shapes on the field. The ensemble even included an umbrella dance backed by Rihanna’s “Umbrella” for their fourth act. “When designing shows, we don’t say no to anything,” said assistant band director Bill Muter. “Someone mentioned the idea and we liked it, but we wanted it to be different, interesting and modern.” Practice eventually paid off with competitions. They placed first against other groups at John I. Leonard High on Oct. 12 and Hialeah High on Oct. 19. However, for the first time in five years, the ensemble was able to beat Stoneman Douglas High in the 5A category by .7 points at Park Vista High on Nov. 2. “Many were nervous, but I felt confident,” said senior and brass captain Gabriel Martin. “I don’t think we’ve ever beat Stoneman like that, so doing that gave us motivation in preparation for the performance.” The big day arrived on Nov. 23 at Ovideo High for semi-finals. While confident in making finals at the Daytona Beach Stadium, apprehension set in as they got second with 92.1 points against Stoneman. Preparing one last time and giving it their all, the ensemble earned their first ever 5A champion title with 92.25 points overall. “This is the most talented band that we’ve ever had and the culture change from freshman year to now is so big,” Martin said. “It’s really cool to see all of the members’ growth.” Even with tough competition, the band proved that hard work can reward passionate individuals. And as a light shower fell on groups waiting for final results, West Broward opened their pink umbrellas and made themselves known to everyone. “West Broward is known for having sass and confidence in their production,” said visual captain head Josh Brenneis. “But as an ensemble we’re just growing in maturity and skill. There’s no doubt we’re going to grow from here.” West Broward High is located at 500 NW 209th Avenue. The main phone number is (754) 323-2600. Mr. Brad Fatout is the school principal.

SCHOOLS he force is strong at Panther Run Elementary’s STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) night. For the first time ever, Panther Run hosted an interdisciplinary night to incorporate a host of math, literacy, STEM, and technology-based activities for students and their families. Spearheaded by principal Ms. Elaine Saef and organized in a joint effort by literacy coach Tania Pinto, math contact and 4th/5th grade teacher Nicole Williams-Roulhac and science resource teacher and contact Kathleen Garcia. Teachers at Panther Run implemented a high-interest, standards-based tasks and opportunities for students to “dig deeper” and share their learning with their peers and families. Panther Run’s science committee built their own planetarium for students to view space elements. Students also created a kaleidoscope and their very own constellation. Then, they were able to observe their own constellations in “space.” Light sabers held student-created words with a designated prefix or suffix and sparked conversation on what these words mean. Students utilized their knowledge of parts of speech to create their own version of a Star Wars story. The younger elementary students unscrambled sentences and practiced their sight words in game format while the older elementary students were challenged to complete reading comprehension activities to demonstrate their knowledge of the Star Wars saga. Students integrated their writing, math, and critical thinking skills as they surveyed

attendees to find out their favorite Star Wars characters, recorded and graphed the information, and then analyzed it to write their thoughts down on paper. Card games, such as Uno and war, took a Star Wars spin as students played order of operations war and r-controlled vowels Uno. Mystery pictures and addition mats challenged students to demonstrate their mastery of grade-appropriate basic facts. Math manipulatives and hands-on learning played a crucial role in students working on money, number sense, and geometry concepts. Gliders and droids were built and students were able to “test” their creations. Tablets were utilized to code a Star Wars game on code.org which sparked an interest for students, families, and community members to revisit on their own. In addition to this collaborative effort by the Panther Run family, community volunteers from the district’s STEM+C department made a guest appearance dressed as authentic Star Wars characters. Students, teachers, and families also dressed in their own Star Wars costumes and clothing. When speaking with teachers at Panther Run, we asked about their motivation behind this Star Wars theme. Because this was such a success, teachers and students are looking forward to “Once Upon a Time” STREAM night to be held in the spring. Panther Run Elementary is located at 801 NW 172nd Avenue. The main phone number is (754) 323-6850. Ms. Elaine Saef is the school principal.

t is our responsibility as educators at Renaissance Charter School at Pines to change the lives of the young scholars we serve. We are looking within ourselves, not only to understand our scholars, but to drive them to success. Our future is built around passion for educating our scholars and embracing all of our stakeholders. This year at Renaissance Charter School at Pines, we are pushing the reset button to Reset Our Mindset! By Resetting Our Mindset, we’ve welcomed our new mascot this school year, Pat the Patriot! Pat the Patriot is filled with lots of fun, personality and surprises! Mascots embody the desire to support the school and are a visual representation of their affiliation with the school they are proud to call their own. Not only will he make the presentation of our school community more visually captivating, but our scholars

view Pat the Patriot as a symbol they can trust and are more likely to listen when incorporated into school wide initiatives such as reading challenges, social emotional learning and community involvement. Pat the Patriot demonstrates the importance of team work by creating a social community by bringing the entire school community together as a whole were everyone feels a sense of belonging and feel at home. Pat also gives scholars, parents, teachers and administration a sense of pride, loyalty, and unity which are feelings that will stick with us long after our scholars have turned in their last social studies assignment and after our teachers complete their lesson plans. tudents of PPCHS filled the halls with bright-colored caps all in support of cancer patients around the world. Every year, the PPCHS Relay for Life team hosts their Caps for a Cure event, where students donate a dollar or more and wear their favorite cap to school. All of the proceeds go to the team’s funds, which then is donated to the American Cancer Society - and this year, the team raised over $300 in donations, making them one step closer to their goal of $10,000. Caps for a Cure is an annual event that Relay for Life organizes not only to raise money for cancer patients, but also to raise awareness for what these patients go through every day. Senior Captain Andy Alfonso expressed, “Our projects go beyond just raising money. We really want people to think about the lives they can touch.” Often times, cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy lose their hair and therefore wear hats to protect their heads. By participating in Caps for a Cure, students stand in solidarity with these patients and honor those who lost their battle with cancer. Junior Captain Jayna Brunner confessed, “Caps for a Cure is one of the most meaningful school projects that we do as a team. I think that it has such a great significance in the impact our team makes around the school and in the community.” Club officers and team members collected donations throughout the day in each class. While most cancer organizations donate their funds to research, American Cancer society has a variety of different outreach programs that help patients

throughout their everyday lives. Some of these programs include Road to Recovery, which aids patients in getting a ride to their treatments, and Hope Lodge, which provides patients that live far from their treatment centers free lodging. The program that inspires Caps for a Cure is called TLC, an effort that offers products for women coping with breast cancer or any other cancer treatment hair loss situations. Freshman Relay member Amanda Roman said, “It’s always important to not only give back in research but in other ways. Wigs for patients can greatly improve someone’s confidence and mental being.” By making donations to Relay for Life students make an immense impact on the lives of patients around the nation. Overall, Caps for a Cure was a huge success for Relay for Life. The team was able to raise a substantial amount of donations and more importantly, raise awareness around the PPCHS campus. Relay for Life continues to cultivate projects that inspire the student body to make a difference in the lives of others. Pembroke Pines Charter High is located at 17189 Sheridan Street. ou’ve heard before that there’s no such thing as “one-size-fits-all” learning. The same is true for study and homework strategies. The responsibility factor is a big part of homework and one of its primary benefits. Homework nurtures students’ time management skills and their ability to complete tasks. But the primary purpose of homework is to reinforce what teachers teach in the classroom. The U.S. Department of Education describes four common types of homework: practice, preparatory, extension and integration. At Huntington, we help children of all ages become better students. Here are some of the strategies we teach for tackling different homework types: PRACTICE – Practice homework is the most common type you’ll see come home. It is intended to bolster classroom learning and help students master specific skills. So, just as the name implies, the key to success with this type of homework is to keep practicing. A few tips for children: • Nail down the basic skills that are the underpinning for more complex skills. • Learn from mistakes by going over missed class problems or test questions. • Always consider homework to be required, not optional. • Dig into the steps. In math, for example, children must understand the “why” behind steps and not just the rote “how.” PREPARATORY – Like it sounds, preparatory homework introduces concepts and ideas that will be covered in class in the near future. Common preparatory homework examples include learning vocabulary or reading a textbook chapter before the content is to be discussed the next day. A few tips for children doing preparatory homework: • Take notes of the main ideas of passages and bring them out when the topic is

providing a wonderful (complimentary) dinner and door prizes. Don’t miss out on this event! As we enter the holiday season, we are particularly proud of our Band department. The band held its’ Winter Concert on December 11th and the turn out was tremendous. The students performed classic holiday tunes to help usher in the holiday season. The opportunities for students at Pines are endless. Whether students are playing in the band or on a sports team, part of the cadet program, or dancing with the dance team, Panther students are shining at Pines Middle School. Pines Middle is located at 200 NW Douglas Road. The main phone number is (754) 323-4000. Mr. Carlton Campbell is the school principal.

covered in class. • Write down questions that arise while completing homework. Ask those questions in class the next day. • If stumped on a problem (math or science, for example), circle it and write down a few reasons why the problem is confusing. EXTENSION – Extension homework is often assigned when teachers want to challenge a student with opportunities to apply what they have learned to something new. A few tips for children doing extension homework: • Be resourceful, looking through notes or the textbook for strategies on how to solve a problem or additional information that might be helpful for homework completion. • Think about concepts in different ways and from different angles. This helps children engage in different ways of mental processing. • Take a problem-solving approach to new and unfamiliar material. Children should think about what tools and information they already have that might help them tackle a problem. INTEGRATION – Integration homework requires students to apply different skills to a single task (e.g. book reports or larger projects). A few tips for children doing integration homework: • Be organized and keep track of all research and information. • Plan thoroughly and effectively, with milestones for multi-step projects. Is your child stressed and struggling with homework on a daily basis? Huntington can help. Call us at 1-800 CAN LEARN to talk about how we can help your child master homework and become a stronger student.

SCHOOLS learned how powerful my voice can be to change the world despite being an immigrant.” On January 25, Flanagan will begin hosting our annual FSA/EOC camps for Language Arts, Biology, US History, Algebra 1, and Geometry. All students are encouraged to attend to ensure success on the EOC and FSA tests scheduled in May. Furthermore, on January 31, Flanagan will also host our first Career Day showcasing many careers and professions that will help Falcons make informed decisions about their goals after graduating high school. For the 2020-2021 school year, Flanagan has incredible future educational events planned. Flanagan will expand existing program options by offering Minecraft Coding classes. More excitedly, through a partnership with Broward College, our students will have the opportunity to participate in a dual enrollment program earning their diploma and graduates will also obtain an A & P License. Another partnership will be with EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University where our students will participate in the Aerospace Aviation program. Students will learn how to operate simulators as well as fly unmanned drones. New to our HOSA program will be an opportunity for students interested in the medical field to obtain certification through EKG’s. In short, Flanagan has had an amazing jam-packed year and in 2020 we will continue to offer great opportunities and experiences to the Falcon community. Charles W. n the past few months, lots of great events have transpired at Flanagan. In October, the Health Science Club HOSA, in cooperation with Florida’s very own One Blood organization, directed their annual blood drive and collected over 150 pints of blood. Their hard work and effort not only contributed to saving lives but also allowed them to be awarded with multiple trophies, courtesy of One Blood. In December, the Flanagan family paid tribute to Cassie Torres with a heartfelt memorial ceremony in the courtyard commemorating the one-year anniversary of her passing. Currently, Falcons are participating in the Kevin Garcia Toy Drive that began on December 9th and will end on December 13th. Our Falcon goal is to collect as many toy donations as possible to brighten the holidays for as many children. Additionally, the week of December 9th, we celebrated one of our very own, Meltonique Bowens, who joined the Jamaican Women’s Lacrosse team. She was also selected to play in the 6v6 Olympic Trial All-Star game, which was held to test out the rules for the potential inclusion of lacrosse into the Olympics. Moreover, our Falcons also went to Tallahassee to participate in Close Up: Rally to Tally. This rally is a 4-day event from December 10th to 13th sponsored by the Bilingual Department that allows eligible immigrant 10th and 11th grade students and staff to understand why knowing the history and government of the United States impacts our role in our communities. Vanessa Vincenti, a 10th grade student, expressed that, “This experience was a perfect opportunity to discover more about the important role I take in society. I

Excellence in Bilingual Reading Award for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record 2019. This is the first year the organization has implemented this national award and Pines Lakes was chosen from schools across the country. Read for the Record is an annual campaign that began over ten years ago to bring together countless communities to read the same book, on the same day. The purpose of this reading celebration is to promote early childhood education and the importance of language and literacy in order for ALL children entering kindergarten to be ready to succeed. This year’s celebration took place on November 7th. The 2019 book was Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora. In addition to school and classroom activities and celebrations centered around the book, all participating PreK and Kindergarten students were given copies of the book to take home. This was made possible through a partnership between the Broward Children’s Services Council, Broward County

WELCOMES 9/11 AUTHOR O

n November 18, 2019, Walter C. Young was privileged to have Kerry O’Malley Cerra, author of Just a Drop of Water visit our school. During this visit, a large group of seventh grade students were able to listen to Mrs. Cerra explain the story of how and why she wrote her award-winning book. Mrs. Cerra kept the students captivated while she discussed her book, her life story, and how society was affected after the tragic events of 9/11. The students were eager to learn how intense the writing process can be. Many students have expressed how meeting this author gave them a new outlook on life and many of them expressed their newfound will to work harder and not give up so easily when they come across obstacles to meeting their goals. After the large group presentation, Mrs. Cerra worked with two classes to

create an original story. Once again, Mrs. Cerra had the student’s full attention and they were very excited to share their ideas to develop the story. As they worked on the story, Mrs. Cerra guided the students through the steps needed to bring their ideas to life. During the process, the students were excited and eager to share in the writing process. The students have shared with Mrs. Suraci (Media Specialist) how they have continued to work on their stories with the steps provided by Mrs. Cerra. This visit was amazing in many ways. Mrs. Cerra gave the students insight to her life, book, and social issues. She also provided the students with ambition and motivation to know that persistence really does pay off! Walter C. t’s the season for giving here at Silver Palms Elementary! In keeping with our culture of kindness our students are engaged in a variety of philanthropic activities. Our talented chorus students are also bringing joy to our families and community through their astoundingly impressive performances. Our kind and caring National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) students are being the change that changes the world, and they invited all the students at Silver Palms to join them on their quest to be agents of change! They worked in conjunction with all our students to collect coins for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). They raised $1300! In addition, our NEHS students are heading the collection of gently used books in hopes of bringing smiles to students in a Title I school. Thus far, they have collected over 300 books! Our Silver Palms families also contributed to feeding over 200 less fortunate families in Broward County, and we are all working together to bring joy to children this Christmas through our Toy Drive! Witnessing the joy that giving brings our children is the greatest gift! Giving comes in many different dimensions. Our students are also spreading joy by sharing their talents with our school and community. In this season of hustle and bustle,

he students at Chapel Trail took an amazing adventure to the Arctic during the Annual Literary Fair. The celebration of books was enjoyed by all grade levels, pre-K through fifth, with many fun-filled and educational activities. In the classroom, the students read about the Arctic region and Antarctica to compare these extreme Poles. They learned about the vegetation, animals, climate and life in these fascinating places on Earth. Each grade level prepared a display that was enjoyed by all during Family Night. The hallways were filled with poetry, stories, art, 3-D creations, and PowerPoint presentations about the Arctic, all created by the students! The excitement of learning and reading covered the school like a blanket of snow! To kick off our tremendous week of literature, the students, teachers and staff participated in a storybook parade. Each student chose a book and dressed as a character from their story. The students really enjoyed seeing the teachers participate and enjoyed a day of school with The Mad Hatter as their music teacher and Disney Villains teaching their classes! The costumes were so creative and gave the students a chance to bring their favorite books to life! As they paraded through the halls, the students carried their book and smiled and waved to their peers. It was a perfect way to get excited about a week full of READING!

gift giving, shopping and all around fast paced living our music teacher Dina Linero leads our incredibly talented chorus students in sharing their gift of song with the community. They brought the joy of the season through song to the Snowfest at Charles F. Dodge Pines City Center. Smiles were shared by all and the beauty of their voices warmed the hearts of all who attended the event. They also shared the joy of the season during our Winter Concert titled “The Best Way to Spread Christmas Cheer is Singing Loud for all to Hear”! They performed an array of songs that told the story of an elf who didn’t quite belong. Their joyful renditions of the holiday songs brought tears of pride and joy to our parents and school community while teaching us all the importance of love and acceptance. It’s moments like these that truly teach us about how our children are powerful leaders in bringing the joy of the season to life through their generosity and kindness. During the holidays and all throughout the year, our Silver Palms Elementary children are powerful agents of change sharing their love of others through their generosity and talents. Everyday they make us proud! Silver Palms Elementary is located at 1209 NW 155th Avenue. The main phone number is (754) 323-7450. Ms. Irina Shearer is the school principal.

Family Night was the highlight of the week! The media center was transformed into the Arctic region, complete with icebergs and igloos! Piles of new books were available for students to purchase. Lines were endless as little hands carried out the stories they were so anxious to dive in to! During the week, students even had a chance to meet a real author! Drew Brockington, author of CatStronauts, visited the students and showed them how to draw a catstronaut! They heard how his experience in astronaut training inspired him to write a book about cats in space! Technology was used throughout the week to bring the Artic to life! Students were literally “on top of the world” as they took a virtual field trip to the Arctic through Google Earth. Online, the children were able to track actual narwhals and polar bears by visiting the WWF site, World Wildlife Fund. Discovery Education was used to expose the students to the spectacular Northern Lights with real photographs, videos and articles about this unpredictable and unique sighting. The Literary Fair was a true success! Our students were so interested in their new findings; we may have a new Arctic explorer among us! Chapel Trail Elementary is located at 19595 Taft Street. he Choose Love Showcase is an event full of friendship, community, and love, hosted by the clubs, Best Buddies and OUTLOUD. A myriad of PPCHS clubs came out to the showcase to tell their stories and remind the school that it is important to make people of all backgrounds feel safe and included. Participating members were the Black Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Fashion Club, Latin Dance, Chorus, the debate team, and Asian Pacific Club. Sophomore Sabrina Araugo, a member Best Buddies, said the goal of the performance was “to promote acceptance, choosing love, and accepting others through singing, dancing, speeches, and poems.” This theme was carried into performances, where students shared their own experiences. Many were as much about celebrating the community’s strengths as they were recounting negative experiences with it. Black Student Union performed a powerful act about equality, diversity, and inclusion in the community. Not all pieces were spoken, however; Latin Dance and Asia Pacific stopped the show with lively dances from around the world, highlighting the variety of demographics present both in Charter and in the larger community. Co-hosting was Senior Jenna Manning, president of OUTLOUD. She said she was excited to see “the members of OUTLOUD… express themselves in a way that is according to the theme [of Choose Love].” Choose Love marked the only OUTLOUD showcase in Charter history, and she hopes it is the first of many.

The Showcase was a huge hit among students and performers alike. Sophomore Valentina Menenses from OUTLOUD said that it pushed her far out of her comfort zone. “Even though I look like a potato,” she joked, “I would go again.” A handful of performers were met with a standing ovation, especially the dance groups, who elevated the energy in the room with enthusiastic productions. The electricity of the performances was a perfect reminder of the diversity at school and in the city of Pembroke Pines. It goes to show that when the community puts their strengths together, great things can be accomplished. Pembroke Pines Charter High is located at 17189 Sheridan Street. This year at Pembroke Pines Elementary, fall clubs did something new with their

70

cumulative performances. With a variety of clubs like, Drama and Dance, Music, Art, Latin Dance, Little Chefs, and Poetry, club sponsors decided to collaborate in a way they have never done before. Inspired by the live action release of the Lion King, they decided to put together a cross curricular production titled “Magical Moments of the Lion King”. Students and sponsors were excited to take part in something that had never been attempted at Pembroke Pines Elementary. Art club, run by Mr. Valverde, began the difficult task of creating a stunning backdrop for our African Savannah as well as the main centerpiece for many of the scenes. His students also collaborated with our artistic Director, Mrs. Jessny Burch, to assist in the creation of costumes. Our Musical Director, Mr. Green, worked diligently with his music students. He not only taught them several chorus pieces; he also composed a song to be performed solely on percussion instruments which they showcased during the show’s intermission. Our Poetry club, sponsored by Mrs. D. Nembhard and Mrs. Diaz, searched high and low to find just the right poems for our production. Students worked hard to memorize them and deliver them with passion and excitement. Latin dance,

sponsored by Mrs. Burch, Mrs. Nino, Mrs. Martinez, and Mrs. Trujillo, took “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” and added a Latin flair to it with a Salsa version. Our Drama and Dance club, sponsored by Mrs. Broughton, was the backbone of this production and executed their lines with excitement and precision. This club had 20 students in grades K-2 and even though they were our smallest performers, the stole the show! Clubs met on Tuesday and Thursdays after school and every other Friday, which were stage rehearsal days. The unyielding effort on the part of the students and the dedicated club sponsors has created a masterpiece that our school is incredibly proud of. Students learned many aspects of production, dedication, and practice and the results spoke for themselves! Our faculty and staff continue to work diligently each day to ensure that we are accomplishing our mission of providing a quality education as we prepare our students for the next chapter of their lives. Pembroke Pines Elementary School welcomes the partnership of all stakeholders. Pembroke Pines Elementary is located at 6700 SW 9th Street. The main phone number is (754) 323-7000. Ms. Natasha Bell is the school principal.

ilver Trail Middle School (STMS) students have taken strides towards assuring that all students are valued members of our school environment. Through a partnership with the AntiDefamation League (ADL), the No Place for Hate Club was formed at our school. Participating students were nominated by teachers for their positive leadership qualities. Members were included from all three grade levels and represent various demographic groups. Following nomination and acceptance, members participated in a daylong workshop focusing on how to identify and prevent hate speech and hateful acts in school. Lila Greenberg, a seventh-grade member, enjoyed being a part of the discussion about how important it is to include everyone and not leave anyone out. As a club member she is excited to share tips she already knew along with those she learned during the workshop with others who are not aware of how to include everyone with their differences. As part of their mission, The No Place for Hate Club went to work immediately by spreading

Since the beginning of the school year, fourth and fifth grade students have been busy creating and modifying their robots to best complete in the VEX IQ Squared Away Challenge. These mini-engineers have also been working on programming their robot to run autonomously. “Our students have to work in cooperative groups and

Juliette Jones believes the activity was fun for all who participated because it sent the message that there is no place for bullying or excluding others at Silver Trail just because they are different. As the No Place for Hate Club grows, members like Ja’Leeah Jones hopes to let others know that it is fine for people to express themselves so that we can learn from each other. The club will be creating a Public Service Announcement for our school. They will also be working on creating a welcoming committee for incoming 6th graders. Club sponsor Mrs. Shira Greenberg and the club members look forward to being officially designated as a No Place for Hate school by the end of the year in order to foster a nurturing, positive, and welcoming culture on campus!
