Happy Holidays to you! Enjoy your family and friends, put aside your differences and frustrations, put down your work, the electronic devices and just be present. There is truly no better present than your undivided time and your unconditional love and acceptance. My husband and I are going into these holidays for the first time without any of our parents. They all recently passed and we are able to look back with no regrets, only fondly cherished memories of all of our gatherings. We were happy, merry and laughing at every opportunity because we were present for each other while we had them with us. I hope you will all look back when the time comes and feel the same. While on the topic of presents and being present, this is a great opportunity to give your time or donations to a worthy cause. This issue we have featured the Harvest Drive, an organization that gives 100% of donations to our Broward County families in need. Your family can donate clothing, furniture, household goods, nonperishable food, money and time to this most worthy cause. Please read more on pages 14 and 15 to find out how to help and give this season. Congratulations to the many AYFL youth football teams in Pembroke Pines that are having a great season. As of October 16th, the PPO Bengals and the West Pines Optimist Panthers each have one undefeated team heading into the playoffs! If you haven’t seen these teams play yet, it’s a great way to spend a few hours and support the community, the AYFL Superbowl will be held on November 9th, visit ayfl.com for location and times. Grab the kids and your friends and go make some great memories this season. There are many fun, local events featured in our Events Directory. Everything from

Dear Readers,

10

We started this month off on a positive note with “Extra Mile Day,which is November 1, 2019 and recognizes that all people can create positive change in themselves, families, organizations and communities by going the extra mile in their lives. I know that as Mayor of our great City of Pembroke Pines, it is always my goal to go the extra mile for our residents and businesses. I encourage everyone to go the extra mile in their pursuit of dreams and in their lives, adding volunteerism and service to help our communities. I am proud to say that we are a very generous city, especially at this time of year. For the past 16 years, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., has joined together with schools, businesses and residents, to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines Community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time very special. The donations provide qualifying families with generously filled bins of non-perishable foods (canned and dried), turkeys and much more to ensure a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. Donations must be in no later than Thursday, November 15, 2019, and can be dropped off at the Center. For more information, please call 954-450-6888. On a more somber note, in recent months we have had an increase in the number of vehicle burglaries, especially when vehicle doors have been left unlocked. Before leaving your vehicles unattended, please remember to lock your doors and ensure that all items of value are removed (including firearms, spare keys and garage openers). In addition, to deter home thefts, please close your garage doors and make sure that your doors are locked. Leaving porch or patio lights on is an additional way to discourage would-be thieves. Please report any suspicious person(s) or vehicle(s) to police before alerting security. The faster the officers can arrive to your area, the easier it will be to locate criminals who may be lurking in your area. I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

n thIn the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-seven years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the year-round effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” According to FeedingAmerica.org, 18.2% of children in Broward County, roughly 73,950 are in a food insecurity situation. 36% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. Therefore, in addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, they make an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that are given out to families in need from our local schools throughout the year. They also start each school year off by providing well-stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies. This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 200 public and private schools are

involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families (approximately 10,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time. Distribution sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the weeks’ worth of groceries and a Thanksgiving Turkey and all the trimmings or a gift card, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the Harvest Drive Boutiques so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High School and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and

shoes, books and household items are most in need by these families. After decades of orchestrating and honing the details and operation of Harvest Drive, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Harriet White, Amy Freund, Tanja Ylenius, Karen Navarrete, Holly Stracquadaine, all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee. The compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate is inspirational. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the

Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

he Lion Organization is gearing up to help millennials clarify purpose and map out dreams for college and careers. The Lion Organization, Inc. is a non-profit company centered around training and mentoring for youth empowerment. The Founder and CEO, Dr. Jacqueline Hill, is a seasoned leader and educator with over 30 years of experience. She and her staff are committed to providing education, tools, and resources for teens and parents who are interested in the pursuit of being prepared for academic success, college readiness, and career discovery. As stated by Hill, gaps in college opportunity have contributed to diminished economic mobility. Teens’ aspirations to continue their education after high school are largely shaped by personal and environmental factors, such as exposure and discovery of opportunities and careers. These assertions fuel the mission of the Lion Organization, Inc. and resulted in an innovative and highly engaged camp for teens between the ages of 13-18. The I AM LION teen summer camp is all about career exploration and

academic success that teaches middle and high school students about possible occupations and academic success skills, as well as soft-skills and workplace experience needed for the future. Teenagers can explore careers through summer programs and internships in areas such as medicine, computer engineering, marine science, supply chain management, hospitality, technology, entrepreneurship, law, journalism, gaming and more. The Lion Organization’s career and leadership programs expose teens to new possibilities before they commit to a college or college major. The IAMLIONteers are teens who complete these interactive and highly engaged summer sessions and enter new realms of understanding about their future. It is not too early to reserve a seat today. Early bird registration opens December 1, 2019. Seats are limited in order to have a more customized and impactful learning experience for teens and parents. To learn more, visit www.thelionorg.com. 16957 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines 33331. (954) 448-8808.

n 1991 with just 15 children the David Posnack Jewish Community Center launched Camp Giborim, the special needs division of the center’s traditional summer day camp. As word of mouth and happy, grateful testimonials from Giborim campers and parents spread, Giborim enrollment blossomed— this summer surging to over 150 campers, ages 3 to 22, and limited only by space and staff constraints. Staff, parents and volunteers recognized the need for a year-round program of innovative and life-altering activities for children, teens and adults with special needs with a wider range of ages that could participate. After reaching out to local organizations and professionals and receiving an outpouring of support and steadily increasing demand from the special needs population, in 2017 Giborim U (enthusiastically called Gib U) was born. The Gib U program is open to individuals regardless of ethnicity, race, faith or gender with varying disabilities that include autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, Angelman and Smith-Magenis syndromes among others. Membership to the J is not required to participate in Gib U. Gib U offers enrichment courses in fitness, weight and circuit training, Spinning®, basketball, yoga, tennis, cooking, karate, swimming, arts and crafts, drawing and painting, dance, film and visual arts, theater, music, gardening and a variety of life skills. “Gib U courses build self-esteem, increase a sense of belonging and encourage friendships,” said Debbie Lombard, Giborim director. “In Hebrew the word Giborim means heroes. The staff and volunteers get so inspired by interacting with the students and watching their determination. They truly are our heroes.” Through courses that focus on life skills activities, personal care, computer skills, employment skills and basic finance, students learn independence. The life skills courses are supported by a grant from Jewish Federation of Broward County.

“Our cooking for daily living course teaches students basic cooking and preparation skills. The recipes have a short list of ingredients, are easy to work with and may be recreated at home,” said Arlene Abrams, Giborim U administrator. “Our daily fundamentals life skills course teaches students how to do household chores, choose and care for clothing, use money and go grocery shopping. The course helps them become more self-sufficient.” In addition to offering the courses, Gib U coordinates monthly socials, both on and off campus, to increase socialization skills. At the completion of each Gib U session, which lasts between 10 and 11 weeks, the students are recognized with a celebration for their accomplishments. The response from families has been awe-inspiring. Missy Longman, whose daughter participates in the camp and Gib U and is this year’s co-chair, says that her daughter is so excited to go. “She’s happy, and I see such a difference in her since she started going. She takes karate, dance and yoga and can’t wait to try new things. Gib U is not just a program, it’s a family.” In 2018 Giborim U was selected as the “Outstanding Program” at a JCCA National Biennial in Memphis, TN from a field of more than 30 nominees. “Receiving this award was the icing on the cake,” said Dr. Diane Wilen, DPJCC board chair, who with Beth A. Allen, co-chaired the committee that developed the Gib U program. “The lay leaders, staff, volunteers and the participating families all worked so hard to make the program a success.” First-time participants for Giborim U must meet the David Posnack JCC and Giborim U admissions requirements as determined by a completed intake process. Intake interviews are available by appointment. For more information, course descriptions or to make an intake appointment, call Debbie Lombard at 954.434.0499, ext. 208 or visit giborimu.org. The David Posnack JCC is located at 5850 S. Pine Island Road in Davie.

A trip to the library can help your child build a lifelong love of books,

reading and learning. Libraries have books, movies, videogames and more on their shelves, and it doesn’t cost anything to borrow them from the library. You can also read and listen to books online for free with your library card, which is free for anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Broward County. Reading together sets an example for your child and shows that you believe reading is important. Books “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss Reading to your child for at least 15 minutes every day, starting from birth, is important to your child’s healthy development and future success in school. Children who are read to regularly, show more activity in the parts of their brain that help with reading comprehension and understanding stories. Even the youngest baby loves being held and hearing the voice of their family members as they read a book aloud. Your local library has more books than any one person could afford to buy, and anyone can borrow the books for free. With so many books to choose from, it’s fun and easy for young children to discover new favorite stories. Librarians are dedicated to building diverse collections, so books can serve as windows (letting children see other cultures) and mirrors (so children see themselves reflected in the books they read). Children learn about different cultures, customs, religions and living situations in their neighborhood and around the world by reading books that reflect diversity. Librarians “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Mr. Rogers Libraries are more than just books; it’s the people inside the library who make it a welcoming space for children and families and connect them to the information they need. From the librarians who help your child choose their next favorite book, to the workers who help you check out books, people who choose to work in libraries are dedicated to helping. Most librarians have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.); Youth Services (or Children’s) Librarians specialize in serving children and families. Stop by the Reference Desk at your local library and say hello! Storytime “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss Story times are more than entertaining – they help develop important pre-reading and early literacy skills while encouraging a lifelong love of books by singing, talking, reading and playing together. Librarians share their favorite stories and help families pick out books to read at home. Activities and free play at the end of story time encourages conversation, builds vocabulary and gives adults and children a chance to make new friends. Children tell us stories long before they learn to read. Story time gives them a place to learn the art of sharing stories and lets them know that their stories are important.

Play “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” - Fred Rogers Many libraries have an interactive play area with puzzles, puppets and props designed to encourage exploration and parent/child interaction. Play fosters children’s imaginations and encourages cooperation while developing early literacy skills. Play helps children express feelings, and allows children to think out loud about experiences. Playing with puppets helps children develop narrative skills and learn sequencing (stories happen in an order: first, next, last). Toy kitchens and plastic food promote healthy nutrition, help children learn about other cultures, give children new words (zucchini, eggplant) and encourage creativity. Puzzles improve hand-eye coordination and encourage children to think and solve problems. Through interactive play, children are encouraged to play together cooperatively and empowered to be responsible. These activities help build connections in your child’s brain, especially from birth to age 3. Through the shared experiences and resources found at the library, parents and caregivers can encourage their children to value reading and become lifelong learners. According to the latest research from the Kids & Family Reading Report, 95% of parents agree “every community needs to have a public library.” Have you visited your local library lately? Stop by, say hi to your librarians, and let us help you build your child’s love of books. SCHOOLS | I s s u e 65 | N ove mb e r 2019 - Ja nuar y 2020 This past October, PLE celebrated “Peace Week” with students participating in the class peace pledge, creating the peace wishing tree, and creating chalk designs to spread a little peace amongst our school. Our school counselor Mrs. M. Thomson is not “gobbling around” when it comes to supporting our students, and with support from all staff members, it is our goal to provide a nurturing climate where students are receiving both real-life and career skills. As we continue into our next quarter of school, students are learning even more skills and playing harder each day with additional events such as: Read for the Record on November 7th, Field Day Week during December 6th-13th, and various grade-level field trips. We are rocking and rolling over here at Pasadena Lakes Elementary, and you are missing out if you have not checked us out on our website at: https://www. browardschools.com/pasadenalakes. he 2019-2020 school year is in full swing, and we are “falling” into learning with fun and excitement! Pasadena Lakes Elementary (PLE) has had a “pantherific” beginning to the new year with visits from Robert Runcie (Superintendent of Broward County Schools) and our very own Miguel Rojas from the Miami Marlins. Students were excited to not only meet our fierce leader but to meet Marlins’ players, who provided them with a small gift. In addition to an invigorating start, students have been learning a variety of skills such as: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, identifying traits of characters in a story, explaining the purpose of various text features, living things and how-to strategies to aid them in becoming stronger readers. In conjunction with the academic skills, our amazing teachers here at PLE work with our fantastic students on the social and emotional component of each and every child. That is our utmost priority here at Pasadena. Through the Kids of Character and the Leader in Me programs, we provide our students with a foundation for teaching them how to be well-rounded citizens who interact with others in a “pawsitive” manner.

requently, the citizens of Pembroke Pines hear about how fast the city has grown or how the hot climate is changing its environment; but only a few citizens take the time to do something about it. Pines Middle School is launching a school-wide initiative, bringing together a coalition of students, staff, parents, city officials, and other community stakeholders (local businesses, organizations, etc.) to help protect the City’s air quality by increasing its tree canopy by 30% by the year 2030. The project is called “Guardians of the Green”, with the driving question--“How does increasing the canopy affect the quality of life in the City of Pembroke Pines?” The City has over 600 acres of wetlands and is neighbor to the Florida Everglades. The park is also the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River. The area boasts rare and endangered species, such as the American Crocodile, Florida Panther, and West Indian Manatee. Pembroke Pines’ citizens will benefit from increasing the tree canopy by:

• • • •

Creating wildlife and plant diversity Increasing property value Increasing economic stability Reducing noise pollution

The school’s coalition has begun an ambitious, multiyear plan to redesign various areas of the school’s grounds. The team will work towards identifying public areas to redesign by planting trees and shrubs, forming areas of lush green vegetation and providing multi-functional uses. The redesigned spaces will provide areas to address civic engagement, arts and culture, and health and well-being. The school’s instructional staff will be using the teaching method of Project Based Learning, or PBL, a studentcentered approach that provides the opportunity to apply life-long success skills (i.e. problem solving, thinking critically, organizing, collaborating, time management, etc. These skills will help students succeed in the future and will incorporate seven essential design elements (challenging problem, sustained inquiry, authenticity, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, and a public • Improving personal/mental health • Adding beauty to the environment and public spaces (green product). Pines MS instructional staff’s future goal is to share its PBL design model with others so their efforts walls, roofs, green sidewalks, and Zen gardens) may be replicated. he Pembroke Pines Elementary (PPE) Pirates kicked off the 2019/2020 school year by implementing a school-wide “House System” that fosters community for all PPE students and staff members. Having experienced being a part of a “House System” in her schools while growing up in Jamaica, Principal Bell remembers it as adding joy to her educational experience while teaching her valuable life skills. She wanted to bring that experience to her students and staff and believes it will enhance the already vibrant environment at PPE. Every student and staff member have been sorted into one of four houses. These houses are named after gemstones, as all our students and staff are gems and we treasure them. The houses are: Emerald House (Green), Ruby House (Red), Sapphire House (Blue), and Topaz House (Yellow). Each house will highlight one of the P’s that we promise to be in our Pirate Pledge. Punctual, Positive, Prepared and Polite. Students and staff are encouraged to live out these characteristics daily. Each house has 2 House Sponsors, who are staff members who will work with the House Captain and Vice-Captain, who are the student leaders of each house. Each quarter, the house with the most points will be rewarded, and at the end of the school

year, the house with the most total points will be named “House Champion” and will get the coveted Pirate Trophy. Students can earn points by displaying positive behaviors, having good attendance, showing house spirit, displaying kindness among other things. Students will also compete in a variety of events, such as door decorating contests and field day, throughout the school year to earn house points. Families can also help earn points for their houses by attending our parent events throughout the year. There are many benefits for having a “House System” at Pembroke Pines Elementary. These include: Promoting student leadership, Promoting healthy competition, Teaches teamwork, Fosters a sense of community. Our faculty and staff continue to work diligently each day to ensure that we are accomplishing our mission of providing a quality education as we prepare our students for the next chapter of their lives. Our stakeholders continue to support us in this endeavor. Pembroke Pines Elementary School welcomes the partnership of all stakeholders. If you would like to either volunteer or become a school partner, please contact the school. Pembroke Pines Elementary is located at 6700 SW 9th Street in Pembroke Pines. ines Charter Middle School West is offering an introduction to business – entrepreneurship class as a new elective to their students this school year. The school is also offering new club opportunities, such as Model United Nations/Speech and Debate and Dance Marathon. Introduction to business – entrepreneurship, led by Deanne Reynolds, is a project-based class where the students will create an innovative solution to a problem into a validated business opportunity. “By researching and brainstorming their ideas, students will activate entrepreneurial mindset behaviors that will help them in college and careers,’’ explained Reynolds. By taking an entrepreneurship class students will learn problem solving and critical thinking skills, business opportunity recognition, economic foundations, marketing and sales, finance, reflection and career planning. Reynolds developed a pilot program last school year, and her students participated in the World Series of Innovation competition. Two groups got into the finals. One group won 1st place with the creation of Co2morrow, an innovative approach that promotes sustainable energy in a smart city. The World Series of Innovation competition is aligned with the sustainable development goals from the United Nations. The students have to find a solution for one of the goals and come up with a business plan for their product. “Bringing real life problem to my classroom will empower the students to think critically when they are in the marketplace,’’ explained Reynolds.

New Clubs Opportunities PPCMS is also offering many after school opportunities for students this year. The Dance Marathon club is brand new to the school. Its purpose is to plan, run, and host the school’s first dance marathon for Children’s Miracle Network. “These dance marathons are well known to many. They have taken place at many colleges and high schools throughout the country for years,” said Denise Pristas, the teacher in charge of the new club. The dance marathon will take place on January 31, and it will be a five hour event. “Our club’s goal is to make our school’s dance marathon one that our entire community wants to be part of. Music, food, drinks, special t-shirts, wrist and headbands, décor, and prizes will be donated,” explained Pristas. Children’s Miracle Network families will participate as well. The Speech and Debate club will now incorporate the Model United Nations competitions to their curriculum. Students will plan, promote, and host quarterly Spoken Word Cafes for our school community. The event allows for everyone to have the opportunity to express themselves in a variety of literary styles. Additionally, students will research and write Model UN speeches in preparation for competition. “Club members will build confidence as they learn to take pride in developing their communication skills for diverse purposes,” said Pristas. akeside Elementary is proud to announce that we are once again an “A” school. Our theme this school year is “We’re an “A” Team Reaching for the Stars!” We are committed to student focus, teaching excellence, accountability, respect and safety. All of our staff contributes to the success of our students and school community. During pre-planning week, our staff designed artistic arms that represent how every single member of our team contributes to student success. We welcomed all our families for Open House this year on Tuesday, August 13th. It was a great turnout! This school year we are officially a K-5 Dual Language School. We have 9 students in grade 5 that have participated in the program since Kindergarten. Our students and families are excited to continue participating in the Dual Language Program in Middle and High School. This program will prepare them for their future careers by formally educating them in both English and Spanish. Once they graduate from High School, they will receive the Seal of Biliteracy on their High School diploma. Their future is so bright! We value the importance of teaching all of our students not only academics but

also to be great citizens and help others in need. After Hurricane Dorian impacted the Bahamas, our students and staff immediately felt the call to action. They asked what we could do to help our Bahamian friends. Almost immediately, we received many donations of water, personal hygiene items, canned goods, pet food, baby food, diapers and paper products. The outpouring of love and support was felt throughout our school campus especially as we received several new students from the Bahamas that were impacted by the storm. Our school community is so kind and supportive of others. Thank you to our parents, volunteers, mentors, partners, staff and our school community for their continued support of our school and its mission. We feel so fortunate and proud to be a part of Team Lakeside and look forward to another amazing year for our Lakeside Gators. The support of our mission and vision is vital to our success as we continue reaching for the stars! Lakeside Elementary is located at 900 NW 136 Avenue in Pembroke Pines. The main school number is (754) 323-6400. Mrs. Kathy May is the school’s principal.

ou’ve seen several red flags, including a decline in grades and a poor report card. Maybe your child has asked you for homework help but you can tell your child has big skill gaps and you feel unequipped to help him or her close them. If you know your child could benefit from the help of a tutor, your next decision is what type of setting is going to be most effective: a one-to-one or group tutoring setting? AT HUNTINGTON, WE ARE PROPONENTS OF INDIVIDUALIZED TUTORING FOR STUDENTS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS: • One-to-one tutoring programs are customized for each student’s needs. In a one-to-one tutoring session, the teacher determines what to cover based on the student’s specific needs and goals. The curriculum is designed to address each student’s challenges. Sessions are built specifically around the student. • Students can’t get lost in the crowd. Just like in a classroom with many students, students in a larger group tutoring session can fade into the background by avoiding asking questions or engaging the teacher. Not so in an individualized tutoring program. Students get the help they need because they are the sole focus. • The programs scale according to students’ growth. Because an individual tutoring session is designed around each student’s areas of weakness, there’s no risk of students getting left behind. Tutors will not move ahead to a new concept without ensuring their students master the essential building block skills first. • Students learn more than just school skills. A quality subject tutoring program focuses on more than the academic skills your child needs for success. At Huntington, for example, we strive to help students boost their self-esteem and turn around any negative feelings they might have about school. Our goal is to help students become

The Homecoming theme this year is Enchanted Forest – it will be a place of magic, where the natural forest reigns, strange things might occur, and monsters, witches and fairies reside. The dance itself will occur on November 2nd, with a Homecoming Spirit week taking place prior to the dance from October 28th - November 1st. Math Honor Society and National Honor Society will offer tutoring starting October 10th every Thursday in the Flanagan Media Center. This opportunity is open to all students. The Debate team of Flanagan attended the Debate Tournament at Yale, scoring the highest out of all the schools in South Florida. They also placed first out of a hundred entries at Flying L in Public Forum at Ft. Lauderdale High School. Flanagan has more changes heading its way, and it will continue to soar! motivated self-starters who are confident in their abilities. SIGNS IT’S TIME FOR TUTORING So, when should you call Huntington? When the grades have fallen, of course, but here are several other signs your child needs personal tutoring help: • Your child lacks study skills. Watch for sloppy or incomplete notes from class and a haphazard approach to nightly homework. Take note if your child seems to make things harder on him or herself by succumbing to distractions or failing to set up good habits during homework and studying. • Homework takes way too long. Tasks that you know should be quick take a long time because your child gets distracted or easily confused. Observe how your child spends his or her time and how long it takes to get going when he or she sits down to do work. • Your child doesn’t care. If your child once enjoyed school and now seems lazy and apathetic about the idea of learning, there might be something going on behind the scenes. There’s a reason for that lack of effort. You need to find out what it is. • Your child’s typical nightly routine: avoid. If procrastination and avoidance has become the nightly norm, your child is probably be struggling with school material. Avoidance is easier than slogging through something difficult or asking for help. Call 1-800 CAN LEARN to learn more about Huntington’s one-to-one student tutoring plans. We work with children of all ages to identify and target their areas of weakness so they can get back on track in school.

On September 19, 2019, teachers at Panther Run joined the national movement to Rock Your School. Each teacher chose their own music genre--70s, 80s, 90s, rock, and country were represented. Teachers then created an out-of-the-box educational experience that captivated students’ attention and motivated them to apply their learning into real-world, engaging standards-based activities. Teachers and students read literature and nonfiction texts of various genres and demonstrated their comprehension in collaborative groups. They extended their writing skills to write and analyze songs and complete grade-level writing tasks. Furthermore, they extended the Rock Your School day with interdisciplinary STEM activities. hapel Trail Elementary School is excited to announce our implementation of a STEAM program for all students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our STEAM curriculum empowers students through project-based learning and fosters an inclusive learning environment where all students are working hands-on and contribute to problem solving. STEAM is comprised of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. STEAM is vital to student’s education because it promotes problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking. Jobs in STEAM fields have grown three times faster than other fields therefore establishing a strong foundation in these areas is critical for future success. Through our STEAM program students will learn the benefits of Hydroponics and will have the opportunity to use our indoor Hydroponics system to grow plants. Students will also learn to code using Bee Bots and Sphero Bots, depending on grade level. Later in the school year students will dive into the world of 3D printing and will be given the opportunity to design and execute a project in our class 3D printer. Each week students participate in “LEGO Build Fridays” where they have the opportunity to innovate designs to meet a specific goal, for example building a LEGO house using exactly 50 pieces. rom September 23-27th, Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCH) among other schools across the United States, participated in Start With Hello Week. The Sandy Hook Promise Foundation started this as a way to relieve the pressures students feel daily. This week incorporates fun and creative ways students can create a carefree culture. This week features characteristics such as kindness and inclusion, which students can display among their peers. Teacher and students alike participated in this week-long event, taking small, but powerful actions to promote a sense of inclusion among the school. Many students today are overwhelmed with outside pressures on a daily basis, leading them to secluding themselves from society, struggling in the learning environment, or even hurting themselves. To prevent these kinds of feelings, the program allows students and teachers a chance to spread an awareness of feeling accepted. Sofia Grullon quotes, “I am glad to see the school promoting this message. The pressures on a high schooler are significant, which is why we need to stick together and spread awareness on inclusion.” Many are torn between the need to compete among each other for attention and focusing on school. However, it requires that the

expected to work collaboratively in every STEAM project and are encouraged to persevere and find ways to improve their designs. To complement our new STEAM program we have developed two new after-school programs. This year we will begin implementing VEX IQ Robotics for students in 3rd- 5th Grade and First LEGO League Team for 4th and 5th Graders. VEX Robotics is a snaptogether robotics system designed from the ground up which provides opportunities to develop engineering skills that are accessible to students of all skill levels. Meanwhile, First LEGO League robots are designed and programmed by our teams to solve missions autonomously. Students who participate in VEX IQ Robotics and First LEGO League will work as a team to build their robots, code commands, and drive their robots with the ultimate goal being to compete against other schools. These after school programs have generated a lot of interest from our students and we hope to continue to grow our after school offerings in the coming years. student body is prepared to take on these feelings and promote a safe environment. To spread awareness, PPCHS has taken action and created activities to make sure everyone is included. We started off the week with Motivation Monday where SGA and SHS members went to homerooms to tell students to introduce themselves in their native language. Then we followed with Tag Tuesday where the student body would wear name tags and talk to someone new. Wednesday followed with Random Act of Kindness where students would randomly be kind to someone. Then Scavenger Hunt Thursday went underway as students participated in a little scavenger hunt with little notes, such as meet someone with the same brand of sneakers. As a reward, the students were able to get a candy prize! Overall, this week is one to recognize that feeling wanted is something everyone would like to feel. We are accomplishing this in fun ways where we can meet new people and make new friends. Pines Charter High is located at 17189 Sheridan Street. The main phone number is (954) 538-3700. the experience to walk in someone else’s shoes, someone with disability. Dr. Andrea Taber, ESE Specialist gave the students this experience. What is like to not be able to hear your friends, walk up and down the stairs with ease, or even be able to see your friends and teachers at school? These are some of the questions third, fourth, and fifth graders were able to learn during Disability Awareness Day at Pines Lakes Elementary.

Students participated in six stations that allowed them to learn more about vision, hearing, and physical impairments and to better understand that a student with a disability is just a student. The students walked away with what it is like to live in the shoes of someone with a disability and to now have more compassion for someone with a disability. For more information about this event call Dr. Andrea Taber at Pines Lakes Elementary at (754) 323-7100. Pines Lakes Elementary is located at 10300 Johnson Street. Ms. Susan Sasse is the school’s principal.

ilver Trail Middle School’s Peer Counselors along with their teacher, Mrs. Fernandez, were saddened by the devastation Hurricane Dorian caused in the Bahamas. Students were eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. This led them to The Bahamas Relief Program where they organized a collection of non-perishable items. Through this program, our Peer Counselors formed a partnership with other schools in the West Broward Innovation Zone, Broward Education Communications Network, Lyons Club West and Broward Education Foundation. Silver Trail Middle School students, families and staff answered the call for assistance during the Bahamas Relief Drive. They collected canned goods, baby formula, water, first

aid items, cleaning products, toiletries, flashlights, batteries and clothing. Peer Counselors sorted, organized and boxed more than 4,000 donated items. Jaden and Emily who are Peer Counseling II students stated that they were happy to make an impact on people’s lives. These students enjoyed contributing because they believe that if they were in need, the contributions of others would be greatly appreciated. Our community came together to make the motto “One Family, One Team, One Goal” a reality. This resulted in several individuals in the Bahamas getting the assistance they needed. SEL INITIATIVE

alter C. Young has a school-wide initiative and commitment to assist students in the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) aspect of learning. In the SEL process, children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL has a framework, which is made up of the following characteristics: • Self-awareness: Know your strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.” • Self-management: Effectively manage stress, control impulses, and motivate yourself to set and achieve goals. • Social awareness: Understand the perspectives of others and empathize with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

• Relationship skills: Communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed. • Responsible decision-making: Make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety, and social norms. As we know, middle school is an integrate part of transitioning physically, emotionally, and academically into adulthood. Research shows that if the social emotional well being of students is not good, then instruction can’t take place. SEL, in part, allows students and adults to interact both in and out of the classroom, and helps provide children with equitable, supportive, and welcoming learning environments. Walter C. e all dance to the beat of our own drum! This year and every year Silver Palms Elementary DANCES TO THE BEAT OF KINDNESS! Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Affection, gentleness, warmth, concern, and care are words that are associated with kindness. While some may think those, who are kind are weak, we are teaching our children that it takes courage and strength to be kind! Instead of focusing on what not to do (No bullying, don’t call other’s names, don’t cut in line, etc.), we are focusing on what to do! Kindness is Golden is one of our initiatives! Every member of the Silver Palms’ staff carries golden tickets. When a student is observed performing an act of kindness, they receive a golden ticket. Each week on the morning announcement tickets are picked out of each grade’s golden box. Those selected from the box receive a special thank you gift bag filled with kind goodies. Moreover, all our students who practice kindness are reminded that they are ALL winners when they spread kindness! During our beginning of the year Kindness Assembly, children are taught how to spread kindness and combat bullying. Our students learn that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, kindness, and dignity! Furthermore, they are empowered to stand up for themselves and others by using their words respectfully and setting healthy boundaries. Students also

learn that most students bully because they are afraid and do not know how to make friends. According to Ugo Uche in his article “How a Mindset of Fear Contributes to Bullying”, “one thing [we] have learned from working with children and teens who have struggled with bullying, is that they are all easily overwhelmed with fear. They are afraid of getting hurt, they are afraid of not being liked, and their list of fears are usually lengthy.” When we practice kindness, we remind our children of something that Jackie Chan said, “sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life.” We do NOT tolerate bullying, but we are kind to everyone! That is how we make the change! Finally, we welcomed all our volunteers during our Volunteer Orientation. The number of volunteers that participated was outstanding! Our Silver Palms community also kicked off Peace Week by planting pinwheels. Our incredible Specials teachers along with PTA, volunteers, teachers, School Resource Officer and campus monitor helped our students plant pinwheels on Friday! As each child planted the pinwheel of peace that they created, they each said, “I hope for peace in our world”! The sense of community and joy from this event touched all our hearts! embroke Lakes Elementary (PLE) launched the 2019-20 school year with a “Back to School Playground Party”. At this event, school families, staff and the community come together to enjoy some time with one another and get to know each other outside of the classroom. It is also a great chance for new families and prospective students to get to know their neighborhood school and meet other families with school age children. Pembroke Lakes Elementary School’s “Playground Parties” feature music, food, fun inflatables, sports and, of course, some time to play on playgrounds. Parents can sit back and enjoy the company of fellow parents and community members, while watching their children enjoying each other in a safe environment. As part of this first event of the school year, Pembroke Lakes

T

he referee has blown the whistle. The girls are all getting in position. You hear the captain say, “Let’s do this.” The ball starts to roll and everyone watching starts to scream and cheer for the team. This is what you see at the PPCMS girls’ soccer game. The PPCMS Girls’ Soccer Team is undefeated. They are the defending champions for Broward County. Made up of 20 young ladies, they’re all ready to play. They are joined by Coach Joe Martone, Coach Crystal Shelton, Athletic Director Dennis Masterpalo, players from the previous year’s team, and a small army of parents, guardians, family, and friends in their endeavor to succeed. These girls give it their all, and they play with passion. Each one of them has the skills and dedication, but more importantly, they work towards a common goal, which is victory. The captain for the girls’ team is Adriana Calderon, and she says,” The girls on the team are great, and we have been undefeated for a long time.” They like working together, and have a very strong bond which is the key to their continued success. Another major contributor, Riley Ahearn, said that they have won all the games so far, and she believes they’re going back to the finals. She says that the coaches are strict but fun. When they cooperate as a team, they do really well.

Elementary also helped raise money to benefit the victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. “We felt it was important to come together as a community and model the importance of helping others in need,” stated Marsha Wagner, Principal. “Our students, families and community members had a blast while lending a helping hand,” John Serdenes, PLE’s PE Coach, shared. Any local businesses that would like to help sponsor one of Pembroke Lakes Elementary’s future community events, may contact the school. For more information on how to get involved in the Pembroke Lakes Elementary community, please contact us today. Pembroke Lakes Elementary is located at 11251 Taft Street. Kaitlyn Consuegra says that soccer has been good so far this year, and collaborating with each other helps them win their games and have this amazing streak. She also says that soccer is fun for them, but sometimes the games get stressful and tough. Even though times are good, they still work hard. Jada Cabrera says that soccer has been fun and that they’ve had some great competition this year. She really hopes that they make it to the finals and win. “What makes this team so successful is the teamwork, it is as if they can read each other’s minds sometimes,” says Masterpalo. Working together will not only help them in soccer, but it will also teach them important life skills. Participation in team sports allows students to make lasting friendships, develop communication skills, feel a sense of community, and learn to respect their teammates, coaches, and opponents. The girls’ soccer team has definitely brought together the student body. Everyone is excited for them, and want to watch them in action. Let’s go JAGS!! **As of this publication, the girls’ team made it to semi-finals.
