While 2019 is well under way and New Year resolutions are still in the forefront of our minds, let’s be mindful of what is really important... our health, our families and our happiness. Recently I read a blog from a new mother who realized that she had been doing so much for her family and others that she forgot about herself. She found herself empty at the end of 2018 because she didn’t make time to fill herself up with the things that make her happy. Her words struck a chord in me, and my hopes are that this letter may in turn strike a chord in you, too. Making time for yourself to accomplish personal goals, get and stay healthy, and be the happy self that is inside every one of us is imperative. When you give so much to family, work and friends, but forget to renourish your mind, your body and your soul, you will find yourself spent and, inevitably, not as happy as you could be with your life. Happiness only comes from one place, inside of you. You can’t keep trying to make everyone else happy (husband/wife, children, boss, parents, siblings, etc…) if you, yourself have not done things to make yourself proud, fit, successful or accomplished in the things you love in life. With that being said, I encourage you to put in writing a few things that bring you joy and put it somewhere you will see it every day. It may be a few hours at the beach, or a 30 minute walk or run, reading a book, or taking a class in something that fires your passion. Whatever it is, make the time to do it. The example you set for your children will be just as important as anything you can teach them from a book. You will find yourself to be a better, happier, more loving person when you take the time to fill yourself back up with the things you love to do. I usually encourage our readers (moms and dads) to find something in our directory for the kids, however, in the same vein as what I have suggested, look for yourself, too! In my search for events and classes and programs being offered, I have come across some great things for adults as well. Broward Community College offers hundreds of online classes to broaden your skills in work and hobbies. Relay for Life is in every city this spring, and this event is a great opportunity to get involved with as a volunteer, attendee or sponsor. There are tons of adult sports leagues that welcome new participants such as softball, soccer, swimming, biking, running, tennis, golf and more. Art programs of all mediums for adults are blossoming in Pembroke Pines, Plantation and many other cities. And, of course, there are always yoga and fitness classes, self defense classes and tons of schools and organizations that need volunteer help. Take a look and see what strikes your chord. This issue and next are focused on spring break and summer camps. Look through all the camps for the kids that will work for your new YOU schedule. Perhaps your children will find their new passion at a sports or arts or academic camp, or maybe they will meet their new best friend. Camps are a win-win for parents and children, everyone gets time to do things they enjoy! Wishing you a very happy year ahead, filled with the things that bring joy to you and your family! My best to you,

Margot

INTRODUCTION TO IMPROV

Central Park, Adults. An introductory course for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals and philosophy of improvisational theater. Through coaching, specific games and exercises, participants will learn how to be more spontaneous, collaborative and comfortable in their own skin. Whether you’re a business professional, stay-at-home parent, or just itching to get your creative juices flowing again, students will find that the skills that make for exceptional comedic improvisation— intense listening, focus, energy, engagement, teamwork, authenticity, adaptability—are skills that anyone can use to make positive changes at home, work and with interpersonal relationships. Each class will consist of some repeated warm up activities that will remain consistent for the duration of the course, as well as new games each week to help participants to inhabit or embody the skills being taught that week, followed by discussions after each game about what worked, what they noticed, how they feel the skills explored in each game, might apply to their own lives. Course is taught with a fun, supportive and noncompetitive approach. No previous experience is necessary. Classes begin February 27. Wednesdays 6:30pm – 8:00pm. hile being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of injury and death to children from 1 to 4 years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water.

PARENTS NEED TO TALK TO THEIR CHILD ABOUT WATER SAFETY. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO START WITH: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing to experience the sensation. REMEMBER WATER SAFETY • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments • Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level • Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water

ENVIRONMENTS • Do not deactivate alarms • If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances • Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use • Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm • Do not deactivate alarm • Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques • Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training • Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained • 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health (954) 759-7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy (954) 346-1774 • American Heart Association 1(800) 242-8721 • American Red Cross 1(800) RED-CROSS COMMUNITY EDUCATION Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central (954) 357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County (954) 467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, (954) 377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward: Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. STEM Museum Night

his year has been a fantastic voyage for Plantation Elementary so far. We are a STEM Museum Magnet School which means that our students receive a specialized curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Twice a year we transform our school into a Science museum. Our first museum night was on November 8, 2018. It was an amazing sight to see the various science exhibits. Our students created projects on various topics such as wind & clouds, objects of the solar system, the five senses and audio engineering. Our exhibit night also featured a laser tag demonstration in the main hallway. If you missed our first STEM Museum night, please join us for our second one on April 11, 2019. You will be in for a special treat! In October we had our annual Literacy parade extravaganza. Our students and teachers dressed as their favorite literary

character. Even our own principal, Ms. Pitter dressed as Alice in Wonderland. Our students and teachers had a terrific time and we look forward to our parade next year. There are so many great things going on at Plantation Elementary School. We have new mentoring groups for our students, ABC (Aspiring, Beautiful & Confident) girls for the young ladies and Man by Choice for the fifth grade young men. This past January they learned formal table etiquette and communication skills from the InsideOut School of Etiquette. Additionally, our Fifth-grade students had the chance to participate in the SECME Bottle Rocket launch competition. Plantation Elementary is located at 651 NW 42nd Ave, Plantation, FL 33317. he High School Basketball Season is underway and the Plantation High Lady Colonels have begun the campaign with an outstanding 10-0 record. The undefeated start is the result of an off-season of hard work and the maturation of a core group of veteran players. Head Coach Doursiel Jello Moore has built a solid program in her third year at the helm at Plantation High. Robert Mitchell, Sashana Bucknor, and Chyterria Kitchens serve as Assistant Coaches on Moore’s staff and Managers Roniya Cadet and Kevin Thompson are the glue that bind the team together. The team returns 10 players from the 2017-2018 season and is anchored by three seniors: Briell Jones, Tiara Williams, and Raesha Pilgrim. Briell Jones is in her second year as team captain and has set the tone for a young team with tons of room for growth and improvement. Coach Moore points to the team’s strong defense as a key to success. “We have very quick guards and versatile post players,” says the head coach. “We are a very young team, but we have every position covered.” The smothering defense is the catalyst to the offense’s success. The potent Colonel offense is commanded by scoring leaders Naacia Morton, Travia Williams, Raesha Pilgrim, and Shade Richardson. The team plays fast on both ends of the court, quickly converting opponent’s turnovers into points. The fast start is a sign of things to come this year and beyond. The Lady Colonels are looking to carry their early season success into a deep playoff run and the ladies are looking forward to a great year overall. Plantation High School is located at 6901 NW 16 Street, Plantation 33313. You may reach them at (754) 322-1850 and learn more at plantationhigh. browardschools.com/

ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS

ith the start of the New Year, Huntington Learning Center and Sports & Activities Directory continue to share the achievements of our local Academic Superstars. Jacquelynn F. is a college student at a local college here in South Florida. She first came to Huntington Learning Center Pembroke Pines after struggling with her Personal Finance course. After attending Huntington, she was able to find the guidance she needed to succeed. Through her hard work, dedication and exceptional tutors, Jacquelynn received her degree in December 2018. Congratulations, you did it! Dylan F. is a student who is in his second year of 1st grade. He has been struggling since VPK and therefore, his confidence and motivation were also very low. We are only 40% completed with his program and he has already increased a grade level and surpassed his school teacher’s goals for him. Dylan is writing Dylan F. Marissa T. Jacquelynn F.

sentences and reading on his own for the first time in his life and though we still have a long way to go, that confidence in his abilities is also growing. We are so proud of the progress he has made and excited to see Dylan as he continues to reach his potential. Marissa T. is a junior at University School with a high GPA and determination to go to a top tier school. With hard work and dedication, and instruction she received at Huntington Learning Center in Plantation, she increased her SAT score by 340 points to a 1520! Congratulations! If your child is struggling with any subject let Huntington Learning Center help and maybe they can be the next Academic Superstar.

t’s not often an opportunity presents itself for a Broadway legend to come to a local performing arts studio and work with young performers; but that’s exactly what took place this past November. Adam Pascal, known for originating the role of Roger in Rent for both the musical and movie, playing the role of Shakespeare in Something’s Rotten, and most recently seen on Broadway in Pretty Woman the Musical, traveled to south Florida to help develop the next generation of Broadway stars. A full day of events was available to students from Broadway Kids Studio, located in the Ridge Plaza in Davie. The first event was a four-hour master class, where Mr. Pascal gave one-on-one critiques on their musical selections. He focused his feedback on ensuring these young performers understood their character’s motivation and portrayed a believable story through their vocal performance. Students and master class observers had the opportunity to ask questions, take notes, and get autographs. “Having the opportunity to work one-on-one with such a highly recognized performer gave me more insight. Adam Pascal was so great to work with. He had us sing through our pieces multiple times to make sure we implemented the objectives. He was so kind and humble and I’m so extremely grateful to have been able to participate in such an amazing master class,”

said Zach Poore, a high school Senior, who is pursuing a musical theater degree in the Fall. Following the master class was a pre-concert VIP meet and greet allowing participants to spend time with Mr. Pascal in a more informal setting. The day ended with an intimate concert where students shared the stage with the one and only Adam Pascal. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was realized by all those who were lucky enough to secure a spot in this sold out event. Mr. Pascal was also blown away by local high school Sophomore, Mariangeli Collado, who he provided with the following feedback, “…performed perfectly, I would not not change a thing.” Regardless of experience or ability, every student gained valuable insight and memories. Maisy Surman, a high school sophomore said, “My best experience was getting to sing with him. He also taught us about his experiences in theater and film. Those tips really influenced me to chase my dreams and pursue what I love. It was great. “ Mr. Pascal emphasized to live in the moment and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, to seize the day. “No day but today” -Jonathan Larson
