By Nick Sortal

I

knocked on 6,000 doors during my first campaign for Plantation City Council, in 2018, and the conversation often went like this: “I like Plantation,” the resident would say. “Except for the schools…” After listening further, I realized that statement was only partially correct. The complaint came mostly from those north of Broward Boulevard, who were happy with their elementary schools, but often moved or sought alternatives to their zoned school, which was Plantation Middle School. Plantation Middle School is among the most severely under-enrolled schools in the county. More children from Plantation now attend Nova Middle in Davie, for example, than our own Plantation Middle. This is a problem for our city because some residents zoned for Plantation Middle move out of the city after the child completes elementary school. Then they likely don’t return into our system to Plantation High. There’s a certain unfairness to the way the public eyes Plantation Middle because many times parents make the decision without even setting foot on the campus. They rely on conversations with neighbors in their driveways rather than doing their own research. But it is what it is. One idea: Get students zoned for Plantation Middle straight onto the high school campus and create a Grades 6-12 campus, but separated from the 9-12 students for security reasons. Encourage the school(s) to continue their International Baccalaureate program, which makes for a more seamless transition. In some cases, middle schoolers can participate in extra-curriculars such as the fine arts and sports (especially cross country, golf and swimming), or at least witness the older students in action. Let’s stop families from moving to Davie, Cooper City and Weston. Under direction of Broward School governmental liaison Angel Gomez, I have spoken

with three school board members, including Dr. Rosalind Osgood, whose district encompasses Plantation High and Plantation Middle. I also have spoken with the Plantation High principal, two elementary principals and other interested parties. The school board members have the final say, and their comments are very similar: The public’s will carries great weight in such a proposal. Board members say they want to be responsive to the community. To create space on campus, the school board would need to tighten the east and north boundaries for Plantation High so they more mirror those of Plantation Middle. This would bolster our sense of community and perhaps the city could help with events, communication, etc. The big question is whether creating a 6-12 keeps more middle school students in our city. That’s why gathering input is a necessary step. With help from school activists, polls are being offered to parents at Central Park Elementary, Mirror Lake Elementary and Peters Elementary. They’re the ones who are making the decision, and I have always said that parents will do what’s best for their child. I’m just trying to find a way to keep residents in my city. The proposal would be to start this in fall of 2023. Existing students who would be “zoned out” of Plantation High could finish their careers there, as well as any other exceptional cases deemed by the principal. I would like to hear more from the public. Let’s see what everyone thinks. Email me at NSortal@Plantation.org. To Do in 2022 (For your kids & possibly you too!)

L

Dr. Olivia Carelli & Dr. David Yudell

et me start by promising no more rhyming. 1) Monitor electronic and screen usage. All devices these days have a usage clock. But how can we put a limit on socialization? Or online schooling? Our children rely on their devices for everything. If you find that your child seems to always be on electronics, start by sharing your concerns with them. From there, you can place some reasonable limits. One suggestion that can be implemented is a 1 for 1 (or 2 for 2) usage timer. For every hour of use, enforce the same amount of time off of electronics before they can return. If they spend two hours on their computer, they need to then spend two hours outside, playing with legos, or completing a puzzle before returning. 2) Spend more time with your children. It is easy to get caught up in dayto-day responsibilities of adulthood. However, there’s nothing more important to provide our child with than consistent attention. Spending time with your children can build their self-esteem and even improve their academic performance. Studies also show that “special time” will decrease behavioral and substance use issues for our children. As many parents know, children grow quickly and may even seem different day-to-day. Cherish the moments! 3) Help your children be present-focused. For those of you with older children, help them to focus on the here and now. Our high school aged children face immense pressure. College is always on their mind in addition to fitting into social hierarchies and living up to peer expectations. For our college-aged children, the focus on career and future is realistic. However, we need to help them remember that there is not rush in building their happiness and success. Anxiety is typically a future-oriented emotion. We can help our kids manage anxiety by teaching them

to focus on what they have power over in the present moment. 4) Help your children connect with nature. Nature provides countless opportunities for discovery, creativity, and problem solving. There are many studies regarding the benefits of nature which include stress relief, improved short-term memory, improved concentration, creativity, and improved overall mental health. Interestingly, one study showed that when compared to kids who were relatively indifferent, adolescents who rated their connection with nature as “important” had a 25% reduction in stress-related symptoms. Exposure to nature at an early age also helps children build appreciation and respect for the environment. 5) Normalize talking about emotions. We can help children develop emotional awareness by giving them the vocabulary they need. We all know the typical, expected mundane response to “How was school today?” is “good.” Try more pointed questions such as “How did you feel during your math test?,” or “What parts of today were the hardest?” You can also lead by example by disclosing your own emotions. For example “I’m feeling pretty sad after that movie. How do you feel?” 6) Model healthy emotions for your children. Kids learn to self-soothe and display healthy emotions by watching us and modeling. It’s okay for your kid to see you cry, open up to others, and get upset at your partner. In fact, healthy arguments can be better than the absence of any discord. Children pick up on what conversations look like when adults don’t agree on something and mimic that behavior in their own arguments. Hopefully, we can model staying calm and respectful during difficult conversations. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

lease join the Plantation Middle School family in welcoming Mr. Tariq Qaiyim as the new principal and educational leader of our school. This fall the former principal, Dr. Sherri N. Wilson, was appointed the new Director of Broward County Public Schools’ (BCPS) Innovative Learning department. Dr. Wilson served as principal of Planation Middle School for seven years until her new appointment within BCPS’ district leadership. In October 2021, the Plantation City Council recognized Dr. Wilson for her service to BCPS and the city of Plantation during her tenure as principal of Plantation Middle School. Mayor Lynn Stoner and city council members presented Dr. Wilson with a proclamation declaring October 20, 2021, as Dr. Sherri N. Wilson Day. City council member Nick Sortal particularly recalled Dr. Wilson’s embodiment of excellence by implementing activities and learning opportunities that led to raising the level of expectation for students and stakeholders. After an exhaustive search, Broward County Public Schools Board appointed Mr. Tariq Qaiyim as new principal of Plantation Middle School on December 14, 2021. Mr. Qaiyim arrived on campus directly after the school board appointment ready and excited to join the Plantation Middle School Patriot family. BCPS Cadre Director, Christine Semisch, introduced Principal Qaiyim to the school’s faculty and staff as they presented him with a warm Patriot welcome. Mr. Qaiyim arrived equipped with an outstanding educational leadership career as his foundation, including most recently serving as an administrator at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. In the upcoming weeks, Plantation Middle School will host a public meet-and-greet where stakeholders and community members will have an opportunity to welcome Principal Qaiyim and to learn about his vision for continued educational excellence. All perspective students and their families had the chance to meet our new principal when Plantation Middle School hosted it Magnet Open House on January 13, 2022 at the school. Plantation Middle School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years

Programme magnet school. Our Middle Years Programme provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical, and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenges, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding, and global engagement – essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. If you were unable to attend the Magnet Open House, please contact Coniell Bursac, Plantation Middle School’s Magnet Coordinate at coniell.bursac@browardschools.com or by calling 754-322-4100. lantation Park Elementary School is the hidden gem of Plantation’s elementary schools. The school has a wide variety of events and activities that allows all of its students the opportunity to shine. In the Spring, our students can participate in monthly book swaps, elocution competitions and debate tournaments, in addition to the music, art, and academic events that take place throughout the year. We will also be incorporating several new activities this year such as The Butterfly Project, a wax museum, Black History Footprints, and MSD – A Day of Service and Love activities. Book Swaps happen once a month and allow students to come in with a book they are ready to exchange for a new book that they have not experienced before. There is no cost, and there are books for all interests. It is run by our PTA, and students look forward to it every month. The Spring also means Elocution Competitions at Plantation Park Elementary. Elocution is when students choose a poem to recite from memory in front of a crowd. They are judged on their articulation, pronunciation, memorization, and showmanship. Advancing to the final round means they can win a trophy and bragging rights for the next school year. Every grade level participates, and it’s wonderful to see the creativity that the students display. In the Spring, Plantation Park Debate Club participates in its final match of the year. They prepare all year long for this activity, and it is the highlight of their year. Students travel to

the host high school and compete in a variety of categories. We are so proud to say that we have had several winners from Plantation Park in the past few years. Finally, some new projects that we are doing this year are The Butterfly Project, a wax museum, Black History Footprints, and MSD – A Day of Service and Love activities. For each of these, students are presented with important information about events or people who have had significant impacts on our world. They are then able to take the information they learn and apply it through various presentations or projects that are put on display for all the staff, students, families, and community members to see. The Butterfly Project is in remembrance of the students killed during the Holocaust and the survivors, and will adorn the walls of our cafeteria providing a constant reminder of hope to those who see them. Our Wax Museum will feature great men and women from history who have made a significant impact on our world. The Black History Footprints Project provides a visual reminder of those who have gone before us and left their mark. And MSD – A Day of Service and Love will forever be something that is close to our hearts as we remember and honor those who lost their lives. For these reasons, and so many more, Plantation Park Elementary has often been referred to as the “hidden gem” in the City of Plantation, and we will continue to do everything in our power to maintain that wonderful title. Plantation Park Elementary is located at 875 SW 54th Avenue in Plantation and can be reached at (754) 323 - 7150.

Just before Broward County Public School students were to start their winter

38

break, a very special present was unveiled at Mirror Lake Elementary School in Plantation. In fact, Principal Marlen Veliz had been waiting three long years to present this gift to her school. As the red ribbon was cut on Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine, the first of its kind in a Plantation school, the excitement of the students lined up in the school’s media center was palpable. Principal Veliz, an educator who is particularly passionate about literacy, stated “The best gift you can give a child is a love of reading. So this was the perfect vending machine to have in our school.” Veliz got the idea of the book vending machine after reading about JetBlue Airlines’ Soar with Reading initiative, which has placed vending machines filled with books in schools across the nation. She reached out to City of Plantation Councilmember Denise Horland, a strong supporter of literacy in the areas’ schools, and individually the women sought out corporations who might have an interest in sponsoring a book vending machine at Mirror Lake, including JetBlue. Unfortunately, most companies were looking to support more economically challenged areas, but Veliz had a secret weapon waiting in the wings: the Mirror Lake Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The PTO parents were enthusiastic about the idea, but with no surplus funds in their account, they realized it might take a while to raise the $5000 needed to purchase the machine. The arrival of COVID-19 further dampened fundraising efforts, but the parents, and the principal, were undaunted. PTO President Dymond Cross, who has two daughters at the school, says funds were raised through “catalog sales, restaurant family nights and cash donations.” “We were able to use $500 in Scholastic Book Fair dollars to purchase the initial supply of books for the vending machine,” stated Cross. “Kids love to learn. We are big on putting books in kids’ hands and making learning fun.” The book vending machine can hold between 200-300 books and each selection is activated with a golden token. Students are incentivized to receive a golden token by achieving the highest Accelerated Reader points, as well as with achievements in iReady, an online program that adjusts lessons to meet every reader at their individual level, enabling teachers to provide a personalized learning experience. “I am so thrilled to have this at our school,” said Mirror Lake’s Literacy Coach, Kiera Johnson. Veliz and Johnson have been bringing all staff members on deck as the school, like many across the nation, battles to lessen the learning losses suffered by students during the course of the pandemic. Bridging those learning gaps is especially critical in elementary school children, as it has been determined that attaining reading proficiency by the end of third grade is the most critical indicator of whether a child will graduate high school. Principal Veliz said, “We are encouraging children to read, read, read, not just for their academic requirements, but for pleasure.” Given the excitement of the students as they dropped their golden tokens into Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine, and the smiles on their faces as they clutched new books to their chests, it was apparent that the love of literacy was in full bloom. Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-7100.

SCHOOLS school…college…this year. What does your child want to accomplish? Talk about how your child can get there. • Set a good example. Your child sees what you do and often emulates it. Give your words meaning by practicing what you preach. Take on a 30-book challenge (read 30 books before the end of 2022) and invite your child to join you. Take that online class. Go for that promotion at work. Show your child that learning and growing are exciting and fun activities and you might find that the inspiration rubs off naturally. • Remind your child that not everything is fun. There will be many times that your child lacks motivation because something simply doesn’t sound enjoyable. Rather than commiserate with your child that a subject is hard and boring, talk about its value and how your child has improved in the subject over time. Remind him or her that everything in life requires effort, and sometimes the best lessons come from situations that require effort and grit. Help your child find success in school. If your child is struggling, it’s understandably going to be that much more difficult to maintain motivation. When you notice your child lacking the drive to keep at it in school, call Huntington. We’ll get to the root of what might be causing your child to withdraw (or not try as hard as you know he or she can) and we’ll put a plan of action in place to get your child back on track. I

f you’ve ever noticed your child seeming lethargic or unmotivated, you’re not alone. As children progress through school, sometimes they become fatigued, struggling to find the “why” behind certain subjects or assignments. At Huntington, we see many reasons students lose motivation, but here are a few of the most common: • Because they’re struggling. When a student has a hard time with a subject, it can be hard to keep up the work. • Because they don’t see the point. If a student doesn’t find a subject interesting or relevant, it’s easy to withdraw or decide that working on homework isn’t worthwhile. • Because they lack confidence. It happens often: a student starts to struggle, grades suffer, and the student declares, “I’ll never be good at this,” and gives up. WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU NOTICE YOUR CHILD IS STRUGGLING TO MOTIVATE? HERE ARE A FEW TIPS: • Encourage a routine. Sticking to a routine feels good and provides a sense of accomplishment. Make sure your child has a good routine and that you uphold it at home. It does make a difference in keeping the learning on task and giving the day good structure. • Let your child take charge. One of the most common mistakes well-intentioned parents make is doing too much for their children. If you’ve been stepping in too much, stop now and let your child take the lead. School is your child’s responsibility—speak of it that way and make sure your actions follow suit. Be on hand for support, but don’t be the leader. • Talk about your child’s goals. Children who set short- and long-term goals tend to be more motivated, eager learners, and are more likely to try things because they want to, not because they have to. So, talk with your child about the future…high
