Dear Readers,

SWEET 16! Happy Anniversary to the Sports & Activities Directory...celebrating 16 years of doing something we love, providing a valuable resource to our communities and helping build clientele for businesses! How sweet it is! For our next generation of parent readers, here is the timeline of how we got here: • Fall 2002: Launch of Weston Directory • Spring 2003: Launch of Pembroke Pines Directory • Fall 2006: Launch of Plantation Directory • Fall 2012: Launch of Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches Directory - 1st Licensed Area • Spring 2013: Launch of Coral Springs/Parkland Directory - 2nd Licensed Area • Spring 2014: Launch of S&A Directory Smart Phone App • Spring 2018: Weston License Sold - 3rd Licensed Area We have been blessed with such a great fan base and readership because we focus on one thing and one thing only - a directory that every parent needs for their family. Seems like a simple concept, but it was a long and winding road to reach our goal to be the ONLY single source of information for sports, activities, events, schools, clubs & camps in your 5 mile radius. Along the way, we developed a Smart Phone App and put our publications online to make the directories simply a click away. We have established ourselves as the only publication delivered into the backpacks of elementary and middle schools and are endorsed by our Parks & Recreation Departments and Mayors. As a matter of fact, every applicable piece of information regarding the City(ies) where we publish receive free directory listings and promotion. In order to do all that, we have an amazing team in place that genuinely cares about our directories and they take pride in their role within the company. GRAPHIC DESIGNER: Our Graphic Designer/Creative Genius, Jennifer Rasku Gowens of The Rasku Group, has been with our team since 2003. She designs almost every dynamic ad you see in our directory and creates every page with her unique design, fonts and flare. She also oversees our website and facilitates our online magazines. We could not have survived without her creative leadership and commitment to our quality and our brand. PUBLISHERS: Our Publishers and/or Licensees include myself (Pembroke Pines & Plantation), Nikki Reading (Davie/Cooper City SW Ranches) and Kim Kadel (Coral Springs/Parkland and Weston). They are on the pulse of everything in their respective areas. You will see them at ball fields, networking events, schools and community events taking photos and gathering the content you want to see every quarter. They also work with businesses, cities and organizations to make sure we represent them well through listings, ads and articles. Inevitably, once a quarter, you will see us driving big trucks delivering our 15,000+ directories to every school, advertiser and family friendly location in your area. It is truly a labor of love! SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHERS: Sports photography is NOT easy! I have been trying for 16 years to become competent in this area, as have our publishers and representatives, but there is only ONE person that continues to deliver high quality action shots (indoor and outdoor) for our Directories and that is Tadd Fisher. Thank you for your 10+ years with us spending your weeknights and weekends at the fields dodging storms, enduring heat, and spending countless hours editing for us so the publishers get exactly what we need! TERRITORY REPRESENTATIVES: Our representatives are some of the best in the business. To clarify... they don’t go out to sell ads. We have a team of professionals that evaluate a company’s marketing needs and determine the best marketing package to reach our niche “active family” readership. They develop all inclusive marketing proposals that incorporate display ads, articles, photos, social media and community involvement through our vast network of connections. Many of our clients have been with us for over 10 years, some all 16! Why? Because we care more about their success than the dollar. A special thank you to Linda Lombardi who has been with us for 13+ years and continues to go the extra mile for her clients and our company! Thank you also to Carolyn Lass, our newer representatives Anna Warburton & Isabel Magette, and finally to Tina Strauss (School Liaison). When we have our team meetings, we share success stories, however they are not our own success stories, they are the stories of those we help by doing what we do. We often tear up when we hear how much of a difference we’ve made in people’s lives through their business growth, recognition of their accomplishments and our involvement in charitable endeavors. When we say it’s a Win-Win to partner with the Sports & Activities Directory team, we mean it! They say the day of print publication is suffering a slow death...but we are 16 years and thriving because we have a purpose in each community and a passion behind it! We are not going away! Thank you to our team, our communities, our readers and our advertisers for all you do to make it possible to continue to do what we love! Enjoy our Back to School issue! My best to you,

Margot

ypically, when we think of after school activities we think of sports and activities that require physical effort. However, there is a whole world of activities that develop children’s intellect and are proven to be great tools for school and social life. Intellectual activities include those activities in which children have fun and gain knowledge on a specific subject. Chess is one of those activities in which children not only have a great deal of fun, but they also gain a variety of valuable skills while they learn and play. The main goal of chess is for children to understand logical strategy to foresee and predict consequences of action, therefore developing critical and logical thinking skills. Chess teaches children to be independent while learning to make decisions by themselves. It encourages children’s creativity and imagination as they become more inventive through play while developing new strategies and moves. Chess is self-motivating, encouraging children to search for the best move and the best plan to get to Check Mate! It is a rewarding and fun activity because the more children practice, the better players they become, and not one game is exactly the same as another. Players can create new moves and develop new strategies every time they play.

Learning to play chess at an early stage in life is very beneficial to their success in the classroom and life. It helps students concentrate and develop memory skills which, in turn, helps them pay attention in class. It also stimulates self-confidence, opening the door to further develop leadership skills. Children amass reasoning skills naturally while they increase their ability to solve abstract problems and anticipate conflict situations. With respect to values, it is a proven fact that playing chess diminishes violence at school and in the community, promoting respect for the other players, responsibility for their own actions, and compliance with the rules of the game. Chess goes hand in hand with science, technology, math, art and psychology. It develops a scientific way of thinking. It involves an infinitive number of calculations and strategies. Chess is considered an “Art” in the form of a game, and is a test of patience, nerves and will power. Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been running for more than 13 years in Florida. We are present in private and public schools, and city community centers in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach counties. Contact Chess for Kids for more information about our aftercare and chess in the classroom programs (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.

urpose is less about what you want than about what you give. The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others. Crossing a finish line sparks multiple feelings. Some include fulfillment, exhilaration, accomplishment and more. Helping someone else cross the finish line, who can’t propel themselves on their own power, is twice as impactful. On Sept 30, 2018, thirty seven special triathletes will be paired with power buddies to race the Escape to Miami Triathlon. All 37 special triathletes will ride their wheelchairs aboard a large yacht that will ship them to a remote, uninhabited island, approximately 1 mile away from mainland Miami. At the island, they will be transferred from the wheelchairs into their own inflatable raft. Next, their Power Buddy will strap on a waterproof cord around their waist and to the front of the raft, and then swim 1 mile to Miami pulling their special triathlete. Once on land, they will be transferred into a special compass race chair attached to a bicycle where the duo will ride for 25 miles throughout Miami and Miami Beach. Power buddy duos get to enjoy each other’s company as they cheer on their friends and each other during the race. It is incredibly rewarding to see the special triathletes enjoy the feeling of the wind on their smiling faces as they approach the final transition. T2 is known as the last transition, where they detach the bicycle and the power buddy pushes the race chair for 6 miles. During this final segment, the

duo is encouraging each other to hang in there by eating, drinking, laughing and screaming screams of joy to reach the finish line! During the last 500 meters, the race participants can hear the roar of spectators screaming their names as they cross the finish line. At the finish line, the duo hugs each other with joy, accomplishment and camaraderie, glowing with smiles. When you know that your buddy is depending on you to power them through the course, you experience an indescribable force that energizes you to continue performing at any cost. If that’s not enough, there’s an unexplained joy of fulfillment knowing that the unending smile of your buddy is because of your generous contribution of your fitness and friendship. The Power Buddies of Special Compass enjoy the meaningful races with the “Differently Abled” often. Healthy, fit people are looking for ways they can give back to their community in need, somehow. Special Compass is a Non-Profit, 501-C-3 organization that serves the Differently Abled population by creating life changing experiences though athletic events, such as Marathons, Triathlons, Spartan Mud Runs, 5K Runs and more. ropical Elementary congratulates teachers, students, and parents for a smooth transition into the new school year! We welcome new and returning teachers, staff members and students, and we celebrate the 2018-2019 school year with a look into the future. Tropical students are in full academic swing. We are meeting the reading and math challenges, learning how real scientists work through lab experiments, and expanding our digital knowledge through technology. We are also proud of our students who have been honored for the monthly Character Traits. Tropical has several clubs and student activities from which our students may chose to participate – they include the Just Say No Club, Art Club, Debate Club, Chorus Club, Science Club, Jump Rope Club, Yearbook Club as well as safety Patrols and Student Council. Participation in these

clubs helps our students gain other skill sets in addition to improving their sense of self. Tropical’s in-house after school activities continue to enrich our school as well. Tropical Elementary’s PTA is a huge part of our success. Through fundraisers, the PTA has been able to support our Tropical Reading Challenge incentives, the Book Exchange, and classroom support for students and teachers. We are so very proud of our volunteers who give their time to help students and teachers at Tropical! The 2018-2019 school year brings many challenges and opportunities to Tropical Elementary. With the support of our community we are ready to face them because Tropical “Toucans” CAN do it! Tropical Elementary School is located at 1500 SW 66th Avenue in Plantation. Mirror Lake Butterfly Project Takes Flight

irror Lake Elementary launched the school wide Butterfly Project this year as part of our annual commemoration of International Holocaust Day. The Butterfly Project focuses on celebrating differences and has lessons ranging from Pre-K to 5th Grade. In 4th and 5th grade, students begin learning about the history of the Holocaust and the human rights lessons we can learn for the future. Gigi McIntire, our School Counselor, led the staff in a training and organized the project throughout the school. Teachers decorated their doors, prepared bulletin boards, and spread butterflies all over the campus. Our dance team, led by Cynthia Boggus, first grade teacher, learned a dance to the song The Butterfly, by Lizzie Sider. Our art teacher, Chantal Bandoni, assisted fifth graders in painting and glazing butterflies for our inaugural wall display. Our music teacher, Jason Martinez, taught all of our fifth graders the Butterfly song from the original poem written by Pavel Friedman. Our efforts to participate in this project are embraced by our administrators, Marlen Veliz and Joan Rosa. This Butterfly Project was truly a collaborative effort by our entire Mirror Lake Staff.

The Butterfly Project is a 501c3 organization. On May 29th, as part of Jewish American Heritage Month, our fifth graders dedicated the Butterfly Wall with a butterflies representing the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust. Linda Medvin, director from the FAU Center for Holocaust and Human Rights, was in attendance. Our fifth grade teachers, Tracy Gener, Emma Keogh, Nerresa White, and Shamequia Wright, shared novels with their classes and worked on research projects focusing on the Holocaust. Each student prepared a butterfly for the wall, each one with its own story of a child who experienced the Holocaust. Our wall will continue to grow over the years, as we will NEVER FORGET. Cheryl Rattner Price is the executive director of The Butterfly Project. She provided a plaque for our wall with this inscription: “May this display bring ongoing dialogue that empowers people of all backgrounds and beliefs to create a more peaceful world. Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation 33313. and thanks to the generosity of both longstanding and new donors, we substantially exceeded a long-time goal of awarding more than $1 million in scholarships to students in need,” said Broward Education Foundation Board Chair Christina Fischer. “We commend each of these students for their hard work, dedication and perseverance and have full faith and confidence that they all have bright futures ahead of them.” Last year, Broward County public high school graduates received more than $800,000 in scholarships. South Plantation High’s halls will feel the void when the

doors open on August 15th now that Jim Overfield has retired. He was the only original Paladin still employed until he finally hung up the teaching cap in May 2018. He spent 48.5 years of his life teaching, of which 46 were spent at South Plantation. Overfield was the very first teacher hired by Principal James Link when the school was founded.

Overfield was also the first JV Baseball Coach and went on to become the Head Varsity Baseball Coach for 28 years. Hal Shroder was the Athletic Director during Jim’s early years at SPHS, “I never had to do anything for baseball. He (Jim) did all the game and practice uniforms, raking and prepping the field for every game and practice.” Nicknamed “Gumby” by students and players, Overfield was later honored to have the SPHS baseball field named Gumby Field. Overfield taught every science (except Physics) at South Plantation and was an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University for 12 years. He earned his Specialist Degree, stepped in for a teacher who had to leave, and took over the AP Chemistry class. He had a remarkable pass rate, especially at the start of SPHS’s magnet program. He was definitely a favorite amongst the faculty, students and parents. At Open House, he even made the parents do a lab, and they loved it! He was also admired and valued as a mentor for other science teachers. Why did Overfield keep teaching after all those years? “I kept teaching because the kids kept me young,” he said. When asked what he attributes to his students’ success in science, he replied, “The changes in technology have been

the biggest challenge for the students. The students were using technology before they understood the process. I like to teach steps and procedures first, check for understanding, and then let them use technology instead of them relying on the answers they don’t even understand.” SPHS Brace Advisor, teacher, former student and parent Julie Kasper gave perspective on Overfield’s impact and longevity, “I had Mr. Overfield when I went to SPHS, and then I came back to teach at South and he was still here! My child was able to have him for Chemistry, too. So he has even taught his student’s children!” Kasper went on to say, “He always wanted EVERY child to learn. You had to admire his work ethic. He gave accommodations for all, not just for a few students. If a child did not master a section, they were able to prove to him that they could grasp it by retaking a text or redoing a lab.” Impacting hundreds upon thousands of students and fellow teachers during his career, Jim Overfield was legendary. Every time Paladin Alumni came back for reunions and went on school tours, they wanted to see his classroom and leave him messages on his board…”Hey Gumby, remember me?” During class, the students loved to hear him tell stories...they will always remember him for that. He will definitely be missed, but he will always be remembered. On behalf of the South Plantation High School students, faculty, coaches and parents, we wish you the very best in your next chapter, Mr. Overfield! Thank you for your 46 years of passion and commitment to our South Plantation High School family.

lantation High School (PHS) is excited to carry the momentum from a fabulous 2017/18 school year into 2018/19. Let’s take a look at last year’s accomplishments and highlight a few of the electrifying things to look forward to this school year. PHS welcomed the return of Head Football Coach Steve Davis in 2018. The Colonels posted a 9-1 regular season record, earning an at-large playoff berth. Coach Davis was named Broward County’s 8A-6A Coach of the Year by the Sun Sentinel. The Cross-Country and Golf Teams qualified for the Regional Tournament. Plantation High sent 3 Track-and-Field Athletes to the State Finals. The PHS Aerospace Program captured its 9th National Final Top 10 placement when the Colonels finished 5th at the Team America Rocketry Challenge in May. The participating students split $7,500 in prize money. The JROTC Female Armed Squad placed 3rd in the State Competition, making it 3 straight years with a top 5 finish for their team. The JROTC Academic Team advanced to the 2018 Army JROTC Academic Bowl Championship at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. K

icking off the year with our students, we want them to ‘BE’ their best and reach their full potential. The year’s theme will focus on ‘BE’. Be awesome, Be amazing, Be helpful, Be yourself, etc… We are going to help each student discover what they can BEcome. The graduating class of 2018 celebrated their top two peers in the class. They gave outstanding speeches at graduation. They wanted to BE at the top and they succeeded. The 2018 Valedictorian Katie Casserly earned a 5.22 GPA while at South Plantation and choose to attend the University of Florida, earning a 100% scholarship. Aditya Sundar, was the Salutatorian, earning a 5.12 GPA. He also earned a scholarship which pays 100% of his college tuition at the University of Florida. The US Naval Academy also awarded John Baldwin with a full scholarship. John received a recommendation from a U.S. Senator to apply for the Academy. We are honored to share the stories from these three graduates. There are many more outstanding students, finding their path and deciding what they will ‘BE’ to help contribute to their community and society.

We want to honor and celebrate all of them! We encourage our parents to ‘BE’ a part of your child’s education. Each student needs a family to see them through the decision making process, for life after high school. From the ages of 14-18, students delve into different areas of interest until they find one they are passionate about. At South Plantation, they can engage in Drama, JROTC, the environment, Computer Programming and Gaming, Engineering, Drone building, Health Sciences, Animal Science, Agriculture, Culinary, Music, Journalism, Leadership, Language, DECA, and many others. There is an area for EVERY child to BEcome anything they set their mind to. We hope to see you at our open house. It is very important for the educators to meet parents and make contact with them throughout the year on your child’s progress. South Plantation High School is located at 1300 Paladin Way, Plantation 33317. Visit their website at www. southplantation.org.
