Dear Readers, I hope that everyone is enjoying a healthy, prosperous and Happy New Year. Spring is in the air and what a beautiful time of year it is here in South Florida. The City of Plantation has plenty of fun events and ongoing activities for families. Maybe it’s time to fulfill that new year’s resolution and sign up for an exercise class or adult activity for yourself. We tend to think of and plan for our children, often forgetting about ourselves. There are many great activities and classes available for adults, too! A few classes in particular that have caught my eye, include an adult art class to fulfill my love of the arts. Or perhaps a reading class or a writers class, perfect for working adults, since they are offered in the evenings and weekends. It’s a great way to get out in the community and meet your neighbors! It may seem a bit early, but it’s never too soon to start thinking about Summer Camp. We feature many summer camp options that are available for 2020. Programs fill up quickly, so be sure to page through our summer camp section for a preview. Spring Break is just around the corner, and for Broward County Schools, it’s the week of March 23rd this year. We also feature many great Spring Break programs to keep the kids active and entertained if you’re staying local for spring break this year. Don’t forget to check out our events calendar as there are plenty of great events happening to celebrate Spring! It’s also a new season for sports registrations, so be sure to look at all the great programs available. I’d like to thank our advertisers for their continued support, and our readers for continuing to read our magazine each quarter. I look forward to seeing you around the community this spring! Happy, healthy spring! My best to you,

By Nick Sortal

f you haven’t set foot on a school campus in the past year, you’d probably be confused making a visit now. School security measures, implemented since the Feb. 14, 2018, tragedy in Parkland, have prompted changes for anyone and everyone. The first might happen as you drive up: A security officer often checks your car for a school-assigned sticker, or, if you lack one, you’re likely given at least a look-over. (Even two years ago, a person could simply drive on campus.) The next, and most emphatic, change is what experts label “a single point of entry.” That means very few students cutting across fields into a back door, or walking onto a school unidentified. The qualifications and number of security officers has also been upgraded. Plantation, like almost every city, has 100 percent of its public schools covered, and two officers are at the city’s two high schools. Many of these changes are outlined in a 133-page report gathered by the Broward League of Cities. That’s the group of elected officials across Broward County that often gathers to work out problems that are universal in nature. After Parkland, the group developed the best practices for all schools. While those measures are necessary and have improved our overall school safety, it’s still unnerving when your children texts you about a “code red” or a lockdown on their campus. Naturally, we think the worst and our mind races – even if the logical part of your brain tries to explain that the vast majority of such events are precautionary. Such was the case recently, when students heard the words “gun” and “code red.” It turns out a student had mistakenly brought a BB gun onto his bus. He ditched it – before arriving on-campus – but the Plantation police took all the necessary precautions. In some ways, it was like a way to cement and practice law-enforcement protocols.

Take Stock in Children: I also want to take a moment to praise Plantation Middle School and Seminole Middle School for increasing their involvement in the Take Stock in Children, a mentoring, college readiness and scholarship program for low-income, academically qualified students. TSIC connects students with mentors, who support the children throughout the school year, and in some cases follow them all the way through high school. TSIC students, who are selected based on need, then receive free tuition to a Florida college upon graduating. Amanda Frey, executive director of Take Stock in Children for Broward County, said the two Plantation schools join 41 other high school and middle schools in the county. Seminole Middle and Plantation Middle are beginning to identify students who fit TSIC’s requirements. “A school that participates in Take Stock in Children is providing an opportunity to access additional resources they otherwise would not have,” she said. “A mentor or volunteer comes in and provides essential life skills and support. It’s someone from the outside coming in and showing that they care.” I think Take Stock in Children is the gold standard for serving a student, and Plantation has a lot of very bright and willing volunteers out there. Often, they just need to be asked. So I’m asking. Call 754-600-9756 or email BrowardMentor@TakeStockBrowardFL.org to volunteer. There is a training process. Local contacts are Tameka.Smith@BrowardSchools.com or 754-323-4226 (for Seminole Middle) and Pamela.vanhorn@browardschools.com or 754-322-4131 (Plantation Middle). Nick Sortal is President of the Plantation City Council. Contact him at NSortal@Plantation.org or 954-498-5337.

Dear Plantation Residents

10

The new year has begun, projects are in full effect and Plantation is just getting started when it comes to activities! Make sure to mark those calendars with our events for you, yours friends and family. Plantation offers something of interest for everyone! Plantation’s community plays an important role in our city’s events and activities. The Plantation Athletic League (PAL) was formed when Plantation incorporated as a city and has grown to consist over 150 volunteers since! Every single aspect of PAL is conducted by volunteers, making it Plantation’s largest volunteer organization. The dedication and service of our volunteers who give their time to ensure the kids in PAL sports learn that the fundamentals of teamwork and sportsmanship are truly appreciated. The participation of the athletes and the volunteers is what makes PAL special. PAL consists of eight (8) Recreational and Travel sports and the PAL Dynamites Special Population Program, including baseball, soccer, tackle football and cheer, lacrosse, basketball and flag football. Our sports are highlighted at Central Park, Pine Island Park, Pop Travers, PAL Park, Jim Ward and Sunset Park, having a place for each component and in all, these programs host nearly sixteen 16) tournaments a year. We currently have recreational baseball, basketball and girls’ softball seasons running until May & June. Our swimming & diving team, tennis, golf and horseback riding lessons offer ongoing registrations all year long, so definitely feel free to come check it out! In addition to our sports programs, we have many city events ongoing such as our continuing Rock the Park Concert Series that will take place February 7th (Classic Rock Therapy) and March 7th (Valerie Tyson Band) at Central Park, the 100-member Florida Youth Orchestra and Nestor Torres concert on February 9th at Heritage Park, a Family Valentine Move night at the Plantation Community Center on February 15th, our Annual Easter egg hunt in April, the list goes on and on. Contact our Parks and Recreation department for any questions or interest in our upcoming events at 954-452- 2510. I’d like to remind everyone how important our participation is in Census 2020! Every ten years the U.S Census Bureau counts residents across the country and we began the process back in 2019. Over these next couple of months, leading up to April 1st, Census Day, the Census workers will make their way around Plantation collecting safe and secure information. An accurate count is crucial as the Census numbers are used to determine federal representation and funds for programs. Let’s stay eager and encouraged to get a complete and correct count. Come and be a part of Plantation, whether you’re playing sports, supporting local businesses or just watching and attending the happenings, I invite you to our community and city.

Sincerely,

Mayor Lynn Stoner City of Plantation

s winter draws to a close, spring is in the air! Spring weather in South Florida can be the most pleasant time of the year. However, spring weather patterns can change drastically, with little or without notice, and can present potentially serious hazards. Here are some important tips for staying safe when dealing with spring’s unpredictable weather. Lightning: South Florida is the lightning strike capital of the world. More people are injured or killed by lightning in Florida than anywhere else. This is very much in part due to the flat terrain and open spaces such as golf courses. It is important to understand that lightning can reach out as far as five miles from a storm front. Therefore, while the sky may seem perfectly clear, there may be a storm rapidly approaching. If you here thunder when you are outside, take the warning seriously and seek shelter. This means go inside and stay away from open windows and doors. If the storm approaches and lightening is active, avoid using electronic devices as well. If you are out in a park or open area seek sturdy shelter in an outbuilding or restroom. Trees offer no protection from lightning. Lightning also has the potential to cause damage to your home’s electrical appliances. Ensure your home’s electrical service is properly grounded. Downpours: South Florida is known for its rapid and sudden rain gushers. Even when the sun is shining, heavy, blinding rains can seem to appear suddenly. Carrying an umbrella or lightweight rain gear during the spring and early summer months is never a bad call. If you are driving and encounter a downpour, do not stop. Also, do not turn on your hazards. Instead, turn on your windshield wipers,

and headlights. Slow down your speed as the roads will get very slippery during the first few minutes during a downpour. If you are not comfortable driving in stormy conditions, pull off to the side of the road and wait for the weather to clear. Also, do not attempt to drive or walk through standing water. There is no way to know how deep the water is or what lies beneath it. If a power line is brought down by high winds or heavy rain, assume it is live. Do not approach it and call for assistance. Spring is actually a beautiful time of the year. A little awareness of spring’s rapidly changing weather patterns and how to handle them will allow you to enjoy the perfect seasonal weather all that much more. We invite everyone to keep up on Fire Department news and activities by following us on Twitter @plantationfire, and like us on Facebook. We are also looking for unique individuals who are committed to serving their community. If you are 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and live in the City, we need you. If you’re ready to be a leader in your community and you’re ready to do more than you ever thought possible, then you’re ready to Become One of Us. Visit our website at Plantation.org to learn about the benefits of becoming a Plantation Volunteer Firefighter. Stay well, be safe, and Happy New Year.

While being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of

injury and death in children ages one (1) to four (4) years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. Here are some ideas to start with: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the easiest and most important water safety conversation to have with your child/children. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out and/or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing in the water to experience the sensation. Remember Water Safety • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is: an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments - Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level - Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water Environments - Do not deactivate alarms - If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances

- Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use - Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm - Do not deactivate alarm - Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques - Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training - Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained - 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health 954.759.7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy 954.346.1774 • American Heart Association 1.800.242.8721 • American Red Cross 1.800.RED.CROSS Community Education Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central 954-357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County 954-467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, 954-377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries. We come together every year at more than 2,500 Relay events around the country to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers.

Each Relay has special events and activities (many throughout the year) just for survivors and their caregivers, so they can connect with others and know there is a strong support system available to them. Join us at Plantation Central Park on April 17 - 18, 2020 from 6:00pm - 8:00am to remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.

FAMILY HEALTH When we give them everything, and fear to tell them no, when we try to be their best friend instead of being their parent, when we don’t dare to ask them to help at home- our children will learn that everything is possible and within reach. Nothing is challenging. Parents with the best intentions may create dependent, irresponsible, and disrespectful children. Children/adolescents need to learn to navigate through the difficulties of life. The more tools they are provided with to manage anger, thoughts, and feelings, the better they will be at leading a healthy, productive life. It is the era of the END of stigma to mental health. WE must advocate and encourage the young to seek counseling, gain the skills and participate in individual and group therapy to learn to manage the challenges they face along the way. We must act to put an end to bullying. We need to teach empathy, caring and unity. WE need to mold independent, responsible and respectful adults. As parents, the executive subsystem of the family, we have difficulty at times finding those skills ourselves. Life is stressful. Seldom can we manage our own stresses, issues and emotions. It is eminent that we help our children to become resilient, develop conflict resolution skills, learn social skills and face life’s challenging situations with wisdom, strength, courage and inner peace. That is where individual, family and group counseling/therapy can be most helpful! DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE!! CALL TODAY AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT!!! s parents, our primary goal is to help our children become independent individuals. We are urged not to think of our children as extensions of ourselves but as different, unique human beings by allowing them to have their own experiences, by letting them learn from their own mistakes. How do we, as parents, help our children become independent, responsible, autonomous human beings? We can do our best to ensure that our children are well rounded and emotionally secured. When we only focus on our child’s ability to do advanced math, read books above their grade level, speak a few languages, receive top grades and be an honor roll student and we provide them with classes of self defense such as: Jujitsu, karate, krav -maga and other forms of physical self defense and we engage them in extra curricular activities: sports, music and others, we certainly encourage them to become the best versions of their individual selves. But How are we contributing to their emotional growth and their overall mental health and stability?? How valuable are all those skills when we neglect to teach our children how to manage emotions, resolve conflicts, build social skills, control anger, manage stressful situations, communicate openly, and make the right choices?

For the 2018-2019 school year, the girls’ basketball team was playing independent against teams who were not district ranked. Under the leadership of head coach Jello-Moore, they had an undefeated season. The team won the Broward League Championship and looked forward to becoming district ranked. Plantation High’s administration recognized the team for their accomplishment. The team plays with tenacity and grit, always working together. Coach Jello-Moore, a former Plantation High School basketball player, developed a relationship with her players which helped them excel in academics and athletics. Ms. Jello-Moore is a head coach who sets high expectations for her players and models appropriate behavior on and off the court. Although

the coach did an excellent job with the team, she requested a change to coach the boys basketball team for the 2019-2020 school year. Upon learning about the change, the girls solicited the school’s principal to stage an intervention with coach Jello-Moore. The intervention worked and coach Jello-Moore accepted the opportunity to be the girls’ basketball head coach for the new season. They have been working daily to prove to their coach that she made the right decision. With the 2019-2020 school year, the girls’ basketball team has had the pleasure of rejoining the district in 6A District 14. They are tasked with proving themselves after previously being ranked independent. After playing 5 games, the team has been undefeated winning all 5 games. We hope they will mimic last season and go all the way. If you ever get a chance to come out and support our winter sports, please stop by our home games: girls’ and boys’ basketball in the gymnasium and girls’ and boys’ soccer at the PAL field. ach year, thousands of graduates from Broward County Public Schools move on to become prominent individuals who make significant contributions to the community. And each year, The Broward Education Foundation likes to recognize these distinguished alumni of Broward County Public Schools. This year former professional football players, a Florida State Representative and the past president of the Florida Bar Foundation were among the remarkable individuals of Broward County Public Schools recently inducted into Broward Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame during the Publix Super Markets Charities 2019 “Hall of Fame Breakfast” presented by Memorial Healthcare System. Three honorees received the Office Depot Education Achievement Award including Plantation resident Randall Deich. The 28-year Broward County Public Schools veteran computer science teacher and STEM coordinator at Lauderhill 6-12 STEM-MD has dedicated his career to public education. As a nationally recognized program coordinator and educator with experience developing talent through learning opportunities for students in a K-12 environment, the 1986 Nova High School graduate firmly believes in finding bliss through diversity and turning that passion into a driving force of lifelong learning. This is his mission statement as an educator and a habit of mind he instills in all of his students. Randall has a proven track record of bringing together schools, industry partners and community organizations that prepare high-need students for the current workforce. To address the minority gap in STEM careers, he partnered with a local software architect and

together they designed and provided an authentic learning experience that empowered students with an in-depth knowledge of computer science. This partnership led to the formation of ReGenerate Tech, a not-for-profit organization. Through this endeavor, the prestigious educator and his industry partners recruited volunteers who taught students and provided feedback on their computer science solutions. This after-school program allowed students to hone their workforce skills leading them to realworld work experiences including student-led workshop facilitation, conference presentations, employment opportunities, paid internships and national recognition in computer science. “Being recognized as a distinguished educator is a once in a lifetime moment. I’m fortunate to have a legacy of students for the past 28 years but to have the community come forward and honor me is surreal,” said Deich. “We always know our stakeholders are our parents and students but to be recognized by Broward Education Foundation, the school board and our community supporters speak volumes.” Throughout his illustrious career, Deich has been an active member of the International Society for Technology in Education, Randall has proudly shared his work at the National Staff Development Council Conference, Florida Educator Technology Conference, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s Conference, Florida Association for Staff Development and the International Society for Technology in Education Conference. Randall Deich is a Game Developer Lead Teacher & Jedi Master at Lauderhill 6-12 STEM-MED.

JUNIOR THESPIANS AT SEMINOLE MIDDLE SCHOOL ARE STARS ON STAGE! O

nce again, Seminole Middle School’s Junior Thespians Troupe 88941 has earned the highest accolades in the Junior Thespians District Festival. Our club, co-chaired by drama teacher David Lubin and American Sign Language and yearbook teacher Sarah Rappaport, has had extraordinary success throughout the years. This year Seminole Middle School performed the one act play, The Staggering Heartbreak of Jasmine Merriwether, written by Don Zolidis. The troupe earned a superior rating for both their cast and crew. As a result, they were selected to perform at the State Festival in Orlando in February. Out of nine plays that were performed at the Districts Seminole Middle’s Junior Thespians were one of two that were selected. We are proud to be the only public school in the Broward County public school system to be given this honor. For the Individual Events, Seminole Middle performed sixty (60) performances and technical theatre pieces, Fifty (50) performances out of the sixty (60) received a high rating of either Superior or Excellent. Two pieces were selected as honorable mention within their categories: Samantha Price (7th Grade) for her monologue and Marielle Acevedo, Griffyn Taylor, and Marissa Weaver (8th Grade) for their pantomime. Four students were selected as Best of Show for their categories: Alyssa Barrios (8th Grade)

Publicity Design for the play Macbeth, Mysha Khan (8th Grade) Costume Design for the play Our Town, Shayna Gainsburg (7th Grade) for her monologue and Griffyn Taylor (8th Grade) for her solo musical piece. These pieces along with eight others will be performing at the State Festival. This isn’t the first time, Seminole Middle’s Junior Thespians has achieved great success at District and State Festivals. Over that past few years, we have been State Selected for our One Act Play and earned Superiors at the State Festival. Seminole Middle was also recognized for Best Stage Crew, Best Actor, Best Costume Design and All- Star Crew. The troupe consists of sixty-three 6th-8th Grade students who have been dedicated towards working and preparing for the District and now State Festivals. After the State Festival, the students will begin working on the musical Bye Bye Birdie, Young Performers Edition. The show will take place on May 18th and 19th at Seminole Middle School. Kudos to Ms. Rappaport and Mr. Lubin for their continued dedication to making Seminole Middle School Troupe 88941 the most successful Junior Thespain Club in all of Broward County. covered in class. • Write down questions that arise while completing homework. Ask those questions in class the next day. • If stumped on a problem (math or science, for example), circle it and write down a few reasons why the problem is confusing. EXTENSION – Extension homework is often assigned when teachers want to challenge a student with opportunities to apply what they have learned to something new. A few tips for children doing extension homework: • Be resourceful, looking through notes or the textbook for strategies on how to solve a problem or additional information that might be helpful for homework completion. • Think about concepts in different ways and from different angles. This helps children engage in different ways of mental processing. • Take a problem-solving approach to new and unfamiliar material. Children should think about what tools and information they already have that might help them tackle a problem. INTEGRATION – Integration homework requires students to apply different skills to a single task (e.g. book reports or larger projects). A few tips for children doing integration homework: • Be organized and keep track of all research and information. • Plan thoroughly and effectively, with milestones for multi-step projects. Is your child stressed and struggling with homework on a daily basis? Huntington can help. outh Plantation High School now offers an Emergency Medical Technician Program (EMT) through its partnership with Barry University and Broward County Public Schools. Seniors will learn real world skills and can earn their EMT certification to work as an EMT right after graduation from high school. The program allows students to earn college credit and complete the program valued at $2,000 for FREE. The mission is to provide Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training and certification to high school seniors attending South Plantation High School. This program addresses the issues of employment and the challenges seniors have in deciding which path to take in a noble profession serving their community. “Our focus was on creating a career path for high school students to be successful immediately after walking across the stage at graduation,” BRACE Adviser Julia Kasper said. The EMT certification program will give the high school seniors quality hands-on training while they are still in school, allowing them the opportunity to work with trained professionals to acquire the skills, knowledge and training that employers are seeking in the competitive job market. Many of the graduates will take this certification and continue onward towards the path towards becoming a fire fighter, nurse, physician and/or other medical professionals.

Justin Serian is the course instructor. Justin is a firefighter/ paramedic with over 15 years of experience in emergency services. “I feel quite fortunate to be the instructor the school chose to lead this pilot program. I’m confident this program will assist in getting students career-ready for life after high school”, Serian said. Certification programs in high school have significant outcomes, but that outcome can only be achieved when equity gaps are eliminated and the programs become available to all students who can benefit from them. “It is a privilege to join forces with Barry University in implementing this first of its kind partnership with a Public School, Principal Henschel said. “This is a win for kids and for the community.” A special thanks to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue for choosing to be a partner in excellence to assist in ensuring the program is a success. For more information on the EMT program at South Plantation High School, or to speak with the instructor please leave a message at 754-323-1975. ou’ve heard before that there’s no such thing as “one-size-fits-all” learning. The same is true for study and homework strategies. The responsibility factor is a big part of homework and one of its primary benefits. Homework nurtures students’ time management skills and their ability to complete tasks. But the primary purpose of homework is to reinforce what teachers teach in the classroom. The U.S. Department of Education describes four common types of homework: practice, preparatory, extension and integration. At Huntington, we help children of all ages become better students. Here are some of the strategies we teach for tackling different homework types: PRACTICE – Practice homework is the most common type you’ll see come home. It is intended to bolster classroom learning and help students master specific skills. So, just as the name implies, the key to success with this type of homework is to keep practicing. A few tips for children: • Nail down the basic skills that are the underpinning for more complex skills. • Learn from mistakes by going over missed class problems or test questions. • Always consider homework to be required, not optional. • Dig into the steps. In math, for example, children must understand the “why” behind steps and not just the rote “how.” PREPARATORY – Like it sounds, preparatory homework introduces concepts and ideas that will be covered in class in the near future. Common preparatory homework examples include learning vocabulary or reading a textbook chapter before the content is to be discussed the next day. A few tips for children doing preparatory homework: • Take notes of the main ideas of passages and bring them out when the topic is
