Dear Readers,

It may be unbelievable, but we have begun a new decade! The entire Sports & Activities Directory team would like to wish you all the very best of health, happiness and success for you and your family in 2020 and beyond! Just like that, we are already looking ahead. Events are in abundance this Spring, so get out to the parks and the venues with your family and friends and make some wonderful memories together. Make sure you don’t miss out on the 5th Annual Weston World Fest, which celebrates international culture, cuisine and entertainment. The theme for this year’s fest is “Stage & Screen,” where movies, music, theater and performances from around the world will highlighted! The unique Tour de Broward 2020 will feature a variety of events for adults, kids, the physically challenged athlete and Wounded Warriors alike. Events include a 3K Walk & 5K timed run; cycling challenges – 50K and 100K, and the Power of Play Kids Zone. If you are looking to be a part of the action, being volunteer or donations are always needed. You can visit tourdebroward.com for more details. Also, join the family fun at the variety of movies & concerts in the park, plus, the puppet shows at the community center. Check out our events pages for details on these events and so many more! Deciding on which Spring and Summer Camp your child will attend may seem far off, however, now is the time to start planning. We are featuring the best that Weston and the surrounding area has to offer in this issue and the next. Camps are an excellent way for your kids to expand their social circles while finding new areas of interest and fun. From the arts and sports camps, to the educational and activities camps, there is a fun and affordable option for every child to enjoy. Don’t risk losing a spot, enroll now! We have several informative articles from our partners. The Children’s Services Council discusses the best ways to protect our children around the water. Drowning is the leading cause of injury death to children from 1 to 4 years old. Children need capable, close and constant supervision, especially toddlers who easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area unnoticed. In school news, read about Everglades Elementary 5th graders, who traveled to Washington DC, the Falcon Cove students that performed Singin’ in the Rain, and learn about Gator Run’s annual toy drive. Finally, congratulations to Tequesta Trace Boys Cross Country team who won their third consecutive Broward County Middle School Championship. Those are just a few exciting things and you can read all the details here. It’s simply amazing what our kids are doing. I wish you a wonderful spring and look forward to seeing you at the field, parks, & around Weston. My best to you,

Kim Kadel Publisher

Dear Weston Residents,

10

NEW BEGINNINGS Incredibly, another New Year has been ushered in. With each New Year comes a renewed sense of spirit, hope, commitment and change. In Weston, we are continuously spearheading change in the way of capital projects, but this year something else is different. We didn’t realize the theme to our annual budget would be so profound when former City Manager John Flint came up with the tag line, “Prepared for the Next Generation.” Well, that is just what he had been putting in place for years and now ringing in the New Year, Weston’s new City Manager is at the helm, and Don Decker is steering the ship with his vision and leadership style into our future. In preparing for the future and the next generation, Weston has made investments in technology which are critical to keeping pace with emerging trends, citizen engagement, online applications and importantly cyber security. In doing so, we not only helped ourselves and our community, but we were also recognized nationally by receiving The Center for Digital Government’s Digital Cities Survey 2019 first-place award for cities with populations up to 75,000. EVENTS GALORE With the winter in Weston comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. I can only summarize the extensive list of upcoming events: Don’t miss the next two free WestonNights Concerts in the Park on Feb. 8th and Mar. 14th both at 7:00PM in Regional Park. Our incredibly popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April; Free Symphony of the Americas Pops concert Mar. 8th; the Foreign Film Series; free professional puppet shows and magic shows at the Weston Community Center; Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center; the Weston WorldFest; the annual Royal Egg Hunt; the Mayors’ Chess Challenge and so much more. This list is reflective of the great work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents. CENSUS 2020 | Everyone Counts in Weston Lastly, you are going to see more and more information in and around our community about the upcoming 2020 Census. It is a count of everyone living in the United States as of April 1, 2020. It’s easy, safe and important and we need your help. Responding to the census ensures our community gets its fair share of funding. Census data guide how more than $700 billion in federal funding is distributed to states, counties and communities each year for the next ten years. You Count!! Please watch for our information and urge everyone you know to complete their census questionnaire when it comes in mid-March, or before April 1, 2020. For more information visit WestonFL.org/Census2020 or Census.gov Details of all City events can be found on our website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our Newsday Tuesday e-Newsletter. Until next time and Happy New Year!

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “Today’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,”

says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to

businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. The Weston community was treated to a riveting

and memorable performance on Saturday, December 7, at the Cypress Bay High School Auditorium. The City of Weston, in cooperation with the Weston Music Society, presented Cirque de la Symphonie. The audience gasped, laughed and cheered as the Cirque acrobats performed their magic perfectly timed to the music. Jugglers, aerial acts, and rope acts thrilled everyone with their amazing feats. Everyone was equally awed by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bryzzese. The program included everything – A Christmas Festival and Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson, the Polar Express Suite, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Hatikvah, Anitra’s Dance by Edvard Grieg, and Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker Suite. A near sell-out crowd of all ages, clapped along, sang along, and enjoyed every moment. Comments included “Best concert ever”, “What a great evening,” “Thank you for bringing this to Weston,” “My kids loved it and are now open to the idea of a concert.” President Lou Marett noted, “One of the goals of the Music Society is to bring the best of all genres of music to Weston. This exceeded that goal!” Many people went to the dessert follow-up reception where they got to mingle and have their pictures taken with the musicians and acrobats. Vice President of Education Christy Blackford added, “What a great follow-up to our elementary schools program in which we introduce the instruments of the orchestra to the students. Now they hear all the instruments together and take a giant step toward appreciating fine music.” To learn more about the Weston Music Society, to become a member and/or a volunteer, please visit www.westonmusicsociety.org.

injury and death in children ages one (1) to four (4) years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. Here are some ideas to start with: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the easiest and most important water safety conversation to have with your child/children. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out and/or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing in the water to experience the sensation. Remember Water Safety • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is: an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments - Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level - Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water Environments - Do not deactivate alarms - If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances

- Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use - Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm - Do not deactivate alarm - Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques - Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training - Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained - 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health 954.759.7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy 954.346.1774 • American Heart Association 1.800.242.8721 • American Red Cross 1.800.RED.CROSS Community Education Contact the following organizations to bring life-saving education to you and your neighbors, your community organization, your workplace or place of worship: • Swim Central 954-357-SWIM • FL Dept. of Health in Broward Drowning Prevention Task Force of • Broward County 954-467-4700 x 5807 • Pediatric Associates Foundation www.pediatricassociatesfoundation.org • Water Smart Broward www.watersmartbroward.org • Children’s Service Council of Broward County www.cscbroward.org, 954377-1000 • 2-1-1 Broward Water Smart Broward is a collaboration between Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Pediatric Associates Foundation and Florida Department of Health in Broward County. T

he Cypress Bay Girls soccer team has embarked on another run at their quest for an elusive state soccer championship. The CB girls’ soccer team has exploded out of the gate early in the 2019–20 soccer season racing to a 9–0 start thru mid-December. The girls are highly regarded in the soccer community holding a national ranking within the top ten in the country while also being one of the premier programs in the state of Florida. Long-time head coach, Kate Dwyer is optimistic about the girls’ chances but takes nothing for granted. Coach Dwyer has scheduled several rigorous games this year to prepare the girls for the gauntlet ahead. The girls will take on Broward County powers Cardinal Gibbons, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Pines Charter to name a few. The

19-20 team returns a large core of the team that went unblemished until the State Championship game last year falling 1–0 to Palm Harbor. Seniors Alex Goffi, Sophie Pieschacon and junior Megan Morgan lead the Lightning with a talented group of girls complement them. According to CB Athletic Director Scott Selvidge, “I believe that we have an extraordinarily talented group of girls that play a self-less brand of soccer.” Coach Dwyer believes that last year’s run to the state title game will motivate the girls throughout the year and also keep them keenly aware of what it will take to win a state championship. SCHOOLS were written on fabric to decorate a teepee and they created mini totem poles with writing describing the meaning of the animals on them. Some students even wrote stories which were modeled after reading several Native American folk tales. After completing research about the traditions and activities held at Pow Wow, students created beaded bear claw and feather necklaces to exchange with each other, just as the tribe members would have done in the past. Music was also a part of the Pow Wow and all the students learned a Native American Pow Wow musical chant to sing and dance to as others played instruments to create the distinct native American rhythm. The day of the Pow Wow was a beautiful sunny day and all the second graders gathered on the grass outside. A large tepee, totem pole, and campfire adorned the area. The students gathered together wearing their headdresses and necklaces in a semi-circle for a read aloud and review game to share what they had learned. Everyone enjoyed the shared experience at the Pow Wow complete with corn snacks, music, costumes, storytelling, and dance. Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. T

he second graders at Country Isles had a unique and fun celebration before Thanksgiving. To complete a unit about the Native Americans, students took part in a Native American Pow Wow right at Country Isles Elementary school on Friday, November 22nd. Second grade curriculum calls for students to learn about the first inhabitants of America: geographic regions, homes, beliefs, languages, clothing, food sources, and more. To make the unit even more exciting to learn about, the CIE teachers helped their students experience a Native American Pow Wow! The students enjoyed discovering how the cultures of the different tribes were similar and different as well as how these tribes have impacted our world today. Prior to the Pow Wow, students completed research projects incorporating different resource material and primary sources. Many activities in class had the students feeling a connection to the many tribes of Native Americans. The Pow Wow was the culminating activity, so students worked hard to prepare! They created Native American headdresses after they learned that Native Americans chose names that showed a strong connection to the natural environment. Students left behind their birth names and at the Pow Wow took on names like Swift Wind and Strong Bear. These names were displayed on their headdresses. Native picture writing symbols

Big thanks go out to the city of Weston for redoing this park that the school gets to enjoy every day. Students look forward to using the park for recess and PE classes. This year the entire week of Field Day was amazing not only was the weather sunny and cool, but the students got to use the new fields. ou’ve heard before that there’s no such thing as “one-size-fits-all” learning. The same is true for study and homework strategies. The responsibility factor is a big part of homework and one of its primary benefits. Homework nurtures students’ time management skills and their ability to complete tasks. But the primary purpose of homework is to reinforce what teachers teach in the classroom. The U.S. Department of Education describes four common types of homework: practice, preparatory, extension and integration. At Huntington, we help children of all ages become better students. Here are some of the strategies we teach for tackling different homework types: PRACTICE – Practice homework is the most common type you’ll see come home. It is intended to bolster classroom learning and help students master specific skills. So, just as the name implies, the key to success with this type of homework is to keep practicing. A few tips for children: • Nail down the basic skills that are the underpinning for more complex skills. • Learn from mistakes by going over missed class problems or test questions. • Always consider homework to be required, not optional. • Dig into the steps. In math, for example, children must understand the “why” behind steps and not just the rote “how.” PREPARATORY – Like it sounds, preparatory homework introduces concepts and ideas that will be covered in class in the near future. Common preparatory homework examples include learning vocabulary or reading a textbook chapter before the content is to be discussed the next day. A few tips for children doing preparatory homework: • Take notes of the main ideas of passages and bring them out when the topic is

stop by. The park includes a fun playground, new basketball courts and baseball field, bathrooms and a workout area for adults. Not only do the school children get to enjoy it, but also the multiage community members will be able to utilize it after school hours. At Field Day, Mrs. DeBiase’s class was showing their spirit with their DeBiase’s Dolphins sign and they cheered for the third-grade students. The Sportmanship award went to Mrs. DeBiase and Ms. Koch for their encouragement to all. Indian Trace Elementary is located at 400 Indian Trace. The main phone number is (754) 323-6300. Ms. Amy Winder is the school principal.

covered in class. • Write down questions that arise while completing homework. Ask those questions in class the next day. • If stumped on a problem (math or science, for example), circle it and write down a few reasons why the problem is confusing. EXTENSION – Extension homework is often assigned when teachers want to challenge a student with opportunities to apply what they have learned to something new. A few tips for children doing extension homework: • Be resourceful, looking through notes or the textbook for strategies on how to solve a problem or additional information that might be helpful for homework completion. • Think about concepts in different ways and from different angles. This helps children engage in different ways of mental processing. • Take a problem-solving approach to new and unfamiliar material. Children should think about what tools and information they already have that might help them tackle a problem. INTEGRATION – Integration homework requires students to apply different skills to a single task (e.g. book reports or larger projects). A few tips for children doing integration homework: • Be organized and keep track of all research and information. • Plan thoroughly and effectively, with milestones for multi-step projects. GATOR RUN ELEMENTARY HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE G

ator Run Elementary has once again continued with its annual Holiday Toy Drive collection. The elementary school partners up with another Broward County School in need of toys and joy for the holidays. In addition to partnering with a school, this year Gator Run has also teamed up with an organization, The Global Empowerment Mission, to donate toys for children in the Bahamas affected by the hurricane. Every year Gator Run sets a goal to raise 2,000 to donate to students in need. It creates a sense of community within the school that all the students, whether 5 years old or 12 years old, know that they are helping make a difference within Broward County. This year Gator Run is not only helping students close by, but also in another country. It teaches the students just how powerful giving can be. The toy drive helps our students recognize that kids just like them are able to enjoy the holidays with their donations and generosity. The toy drive also teaches our students gratitude in recognizing that other students are not as fortunate as they are. Every year Gator Run looks forward to this time of the year because

it allows the school to give back in a major way. The whole school works as a team in order to help other kids. Quotes from some of the students: “It makes me feel good to help other kids who don’t have toys.” – Mason, 2nd grade “It makes me feel happy because we are making kids feeling better to get toys or else they won’t get toys for Christmas.” – Felipe “It makes me feel happy kids that can’t afford gifts we get to get gifts for them.” – Gaby, 5th grade “I think the toy drive makes me feel happy because it teaches people to share. And because it’s Christmas and people should be merry.” – Katherine, 5th grade “It makes me feel excited that people that can’t afford things will get presents that they wouldn’t normally get”- Ellie, 5th grade. Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway. The main phone number is (754) 323-5850. Mr. Keith Peters is the school principal.

a musical bear, which is hidden under a blanket, even if they can’t see the bear. Paper and packaging is fascinating to a 12-month old. Touching the gift wrap, tearing off a piece of it, crumpling into a ball – and yes – eventually sticking it in his mouth is normal for that stage of development. Playing with the scotch tape and noticing how it sticks to things, tearing the paper while messily unwrapping the gift is fun, adventuresome and educational. Don’t be hurt that he doesn’t want to play with the musical bear inside the package; there are a finite number of things that a 12-month old can do with the bear. Symbolic play usually begins around 18 to 24 months. When your toddler pretends that the box he is playing in is his car, or the balled up wrapping paper is a cell phone, he is engaging in symbolic play. So, don’t be embarrassed if your baby prefers the box to your gift: the ideal gift might just be the box! ave you ever wondered why after spending hours thinking about and shopping for just the right toy for your toddler, then carefully wrapping it in bright paper, your child briefly examines the treasure and then abandons it to spend hours playing with the wrapping paper and the box? Give credit to your child’s imagination. She can build anything out of the box and transform it into a hundred more objects. The box is more than a box: it is a dollhouse, Mommy’s car, a fort, a spaceship or a secret hiding place. It is the cave where her bear lives. She can climb in and out of it, hide things in it, and decorate it. The choices are endless. The best part is that your child gets to choose what meaning to give to the box, as opposed the now abandoned toy’s pre-disposed meaning. Children play with toys depending upon their level of development. For the first four months or so, babies are limited to looking at toys because their fine motor skills are not developed. From six to eight months, children can grasp, hold, turn over and put things in her month. And as parents know, a child at that age can lose interest in one object and quickly reach for a different one. Children learn object permanence around this age – that an object still exists, like

usic is an expression of love in its purist sense. On December 4th, at Manatee Bay Elementary School, about 50 chorus students expressed that love to a very appreciative audience of parents, faculty members, and community members. Under the direction of music educator Mr. Mark Henschel, students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades sang and performed on a variety of instruments. Whether it was tubanos and bongos, performed for “Kwanzaa,” recorders for the “Dreidel Song,” or metallophones and sleigh bells for “Season of Bells,” the choristers provided the audience with a variety of holiday music with a variety of instruments. In addition, the show was highlighted with familiar carols sung as solos, duets, and trios from members of the chorus. Familiar carols included the “12 Days of Christmas,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and “Silent Night,” among others. Manatee Bay Elementary serves over 1200 students in grades Kindergarten through 5th. Henschel strives to give a variety of experiences to his students. As a veteran teacher in the Broward Schools district, he is a National Board-Certified

teacher in the field of music. In addition to his duties as a music educator at Manatee Bay, Mr. Henschel teaches privately and performs music in the local area. His schedule is extremely busy, but he is proud to be doing what he feels that he has been called to do and he enjoys his work. Henschel applauded the work of the chorus. “Students will always remember their participation in a musical performing group, even when they get to be my age. Music levels the playing field. It knows no difference in race, gender, or culture. It is very inclusive and allows everyone to share their innermost feelings. In addition, music connects very well with math, reading, and foreign languages and gives our students a well-rounded education. Music has something for everyone. It truly is the universal language.” Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Bay Drive. The main phone number is (754) 323-6450. Ms. Heather Hedman-DeVaughn is the school principal.

alcon Cove Drama Club presented the iconic Hollywood movie musical Singin’ In the Rain. Theatre students rehearsed for two months to put together a beautiful performance for staff, students, and families to enjoy. Several students learning and perfecting their top dance skills for more than a year in preparation for this show! The show ran from October 23rd to October 25th. The cast and crew included all grade levels from 6th grade to 8th grade. The show included all the songs from the classic Singin’ In the Rain movie, which kept the audience humming along all night long. The beautifully designed set made an already perfect show even better! Finley Couch, who played Lina Lamont’s vocal coach Miss Dinsmore, said, “It was amazing because I got to make new friends and see my old ones. I enjoy hearing and being associated with all these incredible people. It was so fun and exhilarating to be on stage, and I loved every second of it.” Emily Baltau, another performer said, “Being in Singin’ In the Rain has been such

a great experience for me. Everyone has been so supportive, loving, funny, and caring that I can’t imagine what my life would’ve been without it. The remarkable abilities of each person I met in Drama Club are astounding. I have felt so loved and appreciate everything everyone has done and know that this show has meant the world to me!” “It was exciting and fun to create with my friends. Seeing all these talented people was awesome. The bond that was made with these people is special,” said Sofia Brown who oversaw the show’s numerous lightning. One of the audience members, Vanessa Allen, said, “I think that everyone there is very talented, and all the lighting and sound changes were on cue and that takes a lot. I think it was an incredible and very successful show!” Falcon Cove Drama’s opening night was very successful, and the show turned out incredibly well. The devastation to the Bahamas with Hurricane Dorian really affected him. I wanted to let him get involved at a young age with helping other children and pulling a community together for a great cause. He really learned a lot throughout this experience and I am very proud of him.” Alison Pusey and Evan will be traveling to the Bahamas in February along with Global Empowerment Mission to visit the children in Abaco. Global Empowerment Mission is in the process of rebuilding their schools, homes and communities. “Evan and I are looking forward to meeting the families and will be preparing for our Spring School Supply Drive.” says Pusey. This spring Alison Pusey and Evan will be working with local schools in Broward County and the community on a school supplies drive for Global Empowerment Mission. For more information on how you can get involved please call or email Alison (954) 300-1954/Alison.Pusey@floridamoves.com

ver the holiday season, Weston mom, Alison Pusey and her son Evan organized a Holiday Toy Drive to collect toys for the children in the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas that were devastated by Hurricane Dorian. They were able to collect over 800 toys for the children including bikes, dolls, sports equipment, art supplies, games and useful toys. Alison Pusey is a member of the Board of Directors with Global Empowerment mission, a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization based in Miami and Founded in 2011 by Michael Capponi. She has been close friends with Michael for the past 20 years and being that her husband Dave Warren is an on-air meteorologist with CBS4 Miami, Alison is passionate about dedicating her time to helping others who are in dire need after catastrophic weather events. Alison and her son Evan, who is a first-grade student at Gator Run Elementary, organized a collection with Mr. Peters, principal at Gator Run, along with Ms. Weinstock and Ms. Grasinger, the school’s guidance counselors. It was a huge success and all of the classrooms at Gator Run had a contest to see which class could collect the most toys. Alison, who is a Realtor with the Sklar Team at Coldwell Banker co-hosted a luxury holiday broker’s open house in Weston Hills Country Club along with Rose Sklar at one of the team’s luxury listings, 2474 Provence Circle. The event had a wonderful turn out by Coldwell Banker agents who generously donated toys and gift cards to Global Empowerment Mission.

HISTORY COMES TO LIFE FOR THE FIFTH GRADERS OF EVERGLADES ELEMENTARY J

ust imagine standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC surrounded by sixty-three fifth graders and a handful of enthusiastic teacher chaperones. Together, students and educators begin their journey in walking in the footsteps of our nation’s rich history. In one swift four-day excursion, the students of Everglades Elementary boarded a plane in early December and landed in our nation’s capital to authentically experience everything they’ve learned about how our nation came to be and how it operates. Students joined their friends in a grand adventure to role-play the events of their forefathers, stand amongst the 300,000 headstones at the Arlington National Cemetery, lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers during the changing of the guard, run their fingers along one of the 58,000 names sketched in stone at the Memorial of Vietnam Veterans, read the pages of Daniel’s diary at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, stroll the breathtaking landscapes of Mount Vernon, feel the breeze that sweeps off the Potomac River, and silently stand amongst the innumerable monuments, memorials, and museums that pay tribute to our nation’s

hardships, growth, fallen, and brave. Mrs. Sheryl Brill and the Flamingo Travel Company worked seamlessly to build a trip around historical landmarks that our students have learned about or will learn about throughout their academic career as a student. While not all fifth-grade students could attend, teachers still submersed their students with rich, standardbased literature, and innovative virtual tours through a variety of memorials and museums, such as the Smithsonian Institution. From the White House, Library of Congress, and Ford’s Theatre to the cuddly pandas at the Smithsonian National Zoo, and the timeless beauty of the Washington National Cathedral, our students have captured a memory that they will treasure forever. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn,” and “Great educators realize that lectures aren’t enough to teach their students; they use the world as their classroom.” – Benjamin Franklin Everglades Elementary is located at 2900 Bonaventure Boulevard. The main phone number is (754) 323-5600. Mr. Eliot Tillinger is the school principal.
