Dear Readers,

As the temperatures rise and the sun sets later, we realize we are approaching the end of the school year and getting ready for summer. There are so many camp options to explore for your children and we encourage you to look at our camp section to make the choice that is best for your family. There are a variety of camps ranging from academic to sports, theater to art and everything in between. So don’t delay and sign up for a fabulous camp today. While summer is a bit lighter on the events provided, there are still so many opportunities to be entertained. Please look through the events section and see when to watch a Marlins game or see a show at the Broward Center and make crafts at the library or partake in a Kid’s Night Out. There is so much to do around town both inside and out. As the school year winds down, we would like to thank all the teachers, volunteers, principals and staff for creating a wonderful, safe and educational environment for our students. Your hard work is truly appreciated. We want to congratulate all of our All-Star students who made academic, service, musical, theatrical and athletic gains this year. We are so proud of all your achievements and can’t wait to see what you do next. Registration for the fall leagues will be taking place very soon. Stay tuned for info on all the league sign-ups by visiting their websites and visiting the city website: https://www.westonfl.org/ We want to remind you that while summer is a time of play, and water is usually involved, please make sure you are practicing water safety always. Make sure your child is never alone in and around the water and that as soon as possible you teach your child how to swim. Take time this summer to spend time with your loved ones, whether on vacation or staycation, barbecues or beach days, just enjoy being together and making memories. We hope you take time to rest, relax and discover the town and all it has to offer. We appreciate all our readers and we want to include items that are important to you. Please send in pictures, stories and ideas so the directory reflects your interests. Happy summer!

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Weston Residents,

10

Graduation time is here for students throughout Weston and those away at college. This is an exciting time for both students and parents and congratulations go out to those graduating. Best wishes for wherever life’s journey may take you next. Once school is out, summer vacation begins! Locally, the YMCA, the Weston Tennis Center and various day cares, businesses and organizations offer summer camp programs. If you’re headed out of town, we suggest you utilize the services of the Broward Sheriff’s Office HomeWatch Program. BSO will send personnel to drive by your residence and perform regular perimeter checks and also look for signs of break-in or suspicious activity. Register for HomeWatch by downloading the form online at WestonFL.org. CENSUS 2020: SHAPE YOUR FUTURE. Less than one year from now the 2020 Census will be taken and it will be very different from all others, in that this census will mainly be online. Yes, no one is coming to your door anymore (unless of course you don’t respond to the questions online or via phone). Census data literally shapes the future of our community. That’s why it’s so important that everyone understands that responding to the 2020 Census is safe, easy and important. Federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race and other factors. The census also ensures that each community gets the right number of representatives in government. Your community benefits the most when the census counts everyone. When you respond to the census, you help your community gets its fair share of the more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs. The goal is to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place. One of the things people forget to do, is to count their children under the age of four, and this is vitally important for resources and funding! We need to count everyone -- no matter what their age, from day one to 101+. Weston will be providing you with lots of information on the 2020 Census over the upcoming year. Please help us by encouraging others you know in the community, at church, at work, in a social group, to be counted. It is essential for our community. The Census is also a great source for part-time and temporary jobs paying on average of over $17.00 per hour. Please visit 2020census.gov/jobs. Leading into the summer, Please keep in mind this important reminder for all: Never leave children unsupervised in or around any body of water. Drownings are 100% preventable. Lastly, come join the parade, an annual favorite! The Weston July 4th Hometown Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 4th. This year’s theme honors ‘The Everyday Hero.’ Be a participant or view from along the parade route – both are free and so much fun! Visit our website for a parade application today or call the Weston Community Center at 954-389-4321. Until next time… Daniel J. Stermer Mayor, City of Weston

WESTON WORLD FEST

n a brilliant Sunday afternoon, the 4th annual Weston World Fest welcomed over 2500 visitors to Weston Regional Park to enjoy a panorama of international activities. Country booths, authentic foods, and onstage performances all contributed to the success of this ever-growing and popular event. Mayor Dan Stermer commented, “In just four short years, the Weston World Fest has become a signature event for our City, thanks to the hard work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston to bring it all together. It’s amazing that this year, over 2,500 of us came together to celebrate our diversity through the cultural arts, food and face-to-face interactions. What an awesome way to celebrate our community. Our world truly is here in Weston.” Twenty country booths representing Argentina to Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia to Venezuela, brought this year’s theme of international Stage & Screen to life. The booths, which were decorated to the hilt offered fun activities with a passport challenge for young people and saw a constant stream of participants. Booth winners were France and Austria (tied) for Best Booth Activity, Costa Rica for Best Interpretation of Theme, and Peru for Best Booth Decoration/Costumes and Best Country Booth overall. “I was delighted with the effort put together by so many of our volunteers this year to create a world within each country booth,” noted Carol Lema, Founder and Director of Weston World Fest. “Visitors could pose in front of Machu Picchu with a full cadre of Peruvians in traditional costume, enter the world of French films and even interact with

a French mime, discover Kyrgyzstani performance culture including Epos Manas poetry, try putting together a life size cinematic Rubik’s cube in the Austrian booth, pose for photos with “Crazy, Rich Asians”, try their hands at Malaysian batik, take a glamorous, Oscar-worthy photo at the German booth or a “Pura Vida” photo with Costa Ricans, visit Venezuelan beauty queens, and make crafts, take photos, play games or learn to write their names in several languages in our other booths. I am thankful for the synergy which brings Weston World Fest to our south Florida community.” The crowd enjoyed a variety of professional and semi-professional performances including such well-known South Florida groups as Brazilian Voices, Gold Coast Jazz Society, the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, Drake Irish Dance, Venezuela Danza y Tambor, and Andrés Arévalo/Tumba y Cajón, along with select student solos, a Chinese lion dance, and a Hairspray finale by The Performance Project and guests. Authentic foods and beverages were offered for sale representing the cuisines of Germany, Singapore, Spain, Italy, Brazil, and the USA. Fun activities for all ages included vendor exhibits, raffles, henna art, face painting, balloon twisting, a soccer dartboard challenge and an inflatable photo booth. President Jami Nix Rahn noted, “It’s hard to believe that it can get any better but year after year it does! Thanks to a grant from the Broward County Cultural Division we have been able to secure top entertainment representing countries from around the world!”

HOBBYGLADES TAKES RADIO CONTROL MODEL TOYS TO NEW HEIGHTS

F

lorida is home to many sports; your traditional football and baseball on land and kayaking and paddle boarding on the water. Now Florida can also be known for a new outdoor sport, Radio Controlled Model Planes. This hobby has actually been around for decades and is making a comeback. In July 2018, Ariel Name, decided to open a new business in our hometown of Weston. Ariel has been designing and flying radio controlled toys for over 30 years. He truly wants the next generation to appreciate this hobby as much as he does. Ariel wants families to spend time outdoors bonding over radio controlled toys. You can find cars, drones planes, boats and more located at his warehouse at 2950 Glades Cir. Warehouse #15. However, visiting Ariel warehouse, HOBBYGLADES, is

more than just a shopping experience; it’s the beginnings of a relationship. Ariel wants his store to be a one stop shop. You not only purchase your radio controlled toys but you now have a place to return for guidance, replacement parts, service and the best prices. Weston has been the perfect place to open the warehouse. The town has beautiful green parks, spaces and lakes to fly the planes or sail the boats or drive the cars. We can’t wait for you to join our radio controlled toy community and start your family bonding experiences today. Call us for more information at (954) 670-4978 or visit our website at www.hobbyglades.com or email us at infor@hobbyglades.com. Follow us in FB

At K-9 Kuts we take every measure to make sure that your dog ENJOYS a trip to the groomer. Our first goal is tender loving care, safety, comfort, and protection of your loved pet. A complete grooming session includes a full-body shampoo, with medicated shampoo if needed and deep conditioning. We also do the little things for your pet, like putting cotton swabs in their ears to keep the water out. We apply a little eye lubricant to protect their eyes while having a bath. While in the tub your pet’s anal glands are expressed. This is followed by a personal hand-dry fluffing. Once their coat is dry, your pet is placed on the grooming table to undergo a nail trim, ear cleaning and plucking of excess hair if needed. Finally, your pet is groomed in the manner which you have specified. This procedure may take up to 3 hours depending on the size. Trust us, they will have a great time during their visit. Water Watchers: Your Pool’s Designated Driver

ver the past few years, there has been a rise in fatal and non-fatal drownings across the nation. Did you know in the state of Florida alone, the number of toddlers who have died from drownings is enough to fill three to four preschool classrooms? Many drownings have occurred due to a lack of supervision and not enough acquired water safety skills. These numbers are causing aquatic and swim school professionals to reevaluate how we educate families about proper water safety. When people think about drowning they envision a child being left alone in or near the water and loudly calling for help but the truth is, that often isn’t the case. Drownings often occur in the presence of others and are considered fast and silent. Safe Kids Worldwide and other organizations have coined the term “Water Watcher” as one of the many safety steps to prevent drownings. A Water Watcher is, “a responsible adult who agrees to watch the kids in the water without distractions and wear a Water Watcher tag.” Like designated drivers, water watchers must be alert, focused and responsible so they can provide proper supervision. They should not be reading, texting, using smart devices, or consuming alcohol. Staying hydrated is important but stick to tasty water or sports drinks. Remember you are the “Designated H20 Driver”! Some families would rather have an event or party and let the professionals handle it. At The Swim Academy, we created Splash Parties, a fun-filled event program that provides lifeguards and Water Watcher’s! We love this program because it allows families to host wonderful summer gatherings and special celebrations while

providing an additional layer of supervision. Think your child does not require supervision because they have taken swim lessons in the past? Think again. Swimming, like every skill, requires constant practice or children will forget these lifesaving techniques! It is important to remember this; just because your child could easily roll over, kick to the wall or float on their back six months ago, does not mean it will come naturally to them now. We want everyone to be Water Smart - Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Neighbors and more! It takes education, awareness and a sense of caring to save lives. Because May is National Water Safety Month, we want to provide readers with a few safety tips: Provide supervision at all times around water, learn to swim, take refresher classes, learn CPR and provide barriers around the pool. Also, if a child goes missing make sure to check all water areas first and keep your phone nearby in case of an emergency. At The Swim Academy, we believe water safety a family affair! Helping families become safer, smarter and respectful of the water, while still having fun, is our purpose and passion. As a member of WaterSmart Broward, United States Swim School Association, Florida Swimming Pool Association, NDPA and the Hope Floats Foundation, The Swim Academy provides families in Broward County with access to swim lessons, water safety events and more. For more information about our swim lesson and programs, including free infant swim lessons, contact The Swim Academy at (954) 348-4500 or visit us online at www.TheSwimAcademy.com.

Elecro Muscle Stimulation EMS represents an effective training method, which can be used to train all major muscle groups simultaneously in a time-efficient manner. It can address muscle groups individually, activating not only the external muscles but also the deeper muscle fibers, which cannot be engaged in a conventional workout, while keeping joint-overload to a minimum. EMS is a physical training and therapeutic technique widely used for centuries by athletes and therapists alike because of its potential to serve as an effective strengthening, stretching, and training tool. When you start exercising with this system, you wear a totally wireless body suit with a “control box” that digitally receives and transmits a programmed stimulus to more than 90% of your muscles. Different from most existing workouts, these ultra-short workout is digitally programmed and personalized to help each individual with weight loss, combat cellulite, sculpt muscles, tighten skin, glutes, abs, boost hormone levels, get more energy, better circulation, etc. At Activ8 EMS you have a personal trainer with you 100% of the time guiding you, helping you, every step of the way. COUNTRY ISLES SUPPORTS INCLUSION WITH PLAY PALS

here are so many wonderful programs that take place daily at Country Isles Elementary. However, one program that embraces inclusion is Play Pals. This program consists of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students being peer mentors to students with special considerations (students in Pre K - 5th grade). The mentor students who are selected exhibit a variety of traits such as: responsibility, leadership, and kindness. The mentor students receive training and continue to be guided by staff while working with their assigned students. The mentor students are assigned a student or students in a particular class on a weekly basis as well as during special activities. These students model socially expected behaviors while playing games, completing assigned tasks, addressing fine and gross motor skills through play, fostering independence during meal times, and assisting in grade level activities (specials). Many peer mentors make connections with students who have special considerations, which help to improve overall feelings of inclusion. Inclusion is so very important and highly encouraged at Country Isles Elementary. Inclusion stresses the importance of person first, special considerations second. All students involved in this program learn empathy and value diversity. It creates an enriched learning environment in which all students benefit from diversified teaching strategies. Play Pals learn patience, tolerance and acceptance. They begin to educate their peers, friends, and families about their experiences. The students with special considerations gain valuable skills through this program as well. They learn many skills that positively impact their interactions with others and how to be more independent. Friendship and problem solving skills are also addressed as well as learning respect for each other. Our school

focuses on kindness and compassion. These character traits are demonstrated in the classroom during morning meetings. The Play Pals take what they learn from their morning meeting and model it while working with their assigned students. This program continues to grow as student and teacher interest continues to grow. It’s very exciting to see the growth of the program as new members are added monthly. The program builds a strong sense of unity and friendship which is enticing new members. The Play Pals were instrumental in providing additional support and assistance during our Special Olympics culminating activity. During the week they work with students collaboratively in the classroom and socially on the playground. As a school we will continue to add to our Play Pal Program each year. Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. The main phone number is (754) 323-5250. Ms. Mindy Morgan is the school’s principal.

SCHOOLS Led Conferences with the Dual Language classes because the concept intrigued her. Student Led Conferences is when the students lead the conference about their academic progress. They take ownership of their learning experience by showing a body of their work through portfolios/work samples both on paper and digitally using Canvas, which is our LMS - Learning Managing System. “What a great opportunity for my student to take ownership of their learning along with explaining in their own words to their parents their strengths and weaknesses,” explained Mrs.

Delgado, a 2nd grade Dual Language teacher. “The students were extremely proud to show their progress in both languages. As a teacher, it was wonderful to see the parents and child involved in the process.” Fourth grade teachers Mrs. Fernandez and Mrs. Charron agree, “As we watched our students explaining to their parents their accomplishments, we could see their maturity and pride in their success.” Indian Trace Elementary is located at 400 Indian Trace. The main phone number is (754) 323-6300. Ms. Amy Winder is the school’s principal.

F

ifth graders, in Mrs. Weingartner’s class, at Manatee Bay Elementary had the wonderful opportunity to interact with a scientist on location in Antarctica. A Skype call was arranged with Jean Pennycook, who is the Penguin Science Education and Outreach Specialist on a National Science Foundation project. Pennycook studies Adelie Penguins and spends many months in Antarctica every year. When asked why she thought of Antarctica as a place for her students to experience via Skype, Weingartner stated, “I wanted to give my students the opportunity to interact with a scientist in an area most people don’t get a chance to visit.” Weingartner likes to bring lessons to life for her students because it makes the learning more memorable and authentic. Before the call took place, students were required to do research about Antarctica and the adaptation Adelie penguins need to survive. Students were eager to engage in this lesson as they wanted to ask Pennycook intelligent questions and it was fun to learn about such cute subjects. Students came to the interview ready with questions and were excited to hear the answers. Science standards were easily incorporated in this lesson as it involved climate zones, adaptations, evolution and diversity.

Pennycook began the call with an explanation of her work and the fact that most penguins live in warm weather. Only a few penguin species live in cold climates. The call allowed students to see the cold climate up close along with many Adelie penguins, as they have no fear of humans. Students observed penguins sitting on their eggs to protect them from predators and the climate. Pennycook answered questions the class had on Antarctica, how she spends her day and about the penguins. Student Dylan Wheeler stated, “I was amazed how close she was able to get to the penguin nests.” Dylan’s favorite part was watching a penguin running around stealing rocks from other penguins to build a nest. Mrs. Weingartner observed, “The students were fully engaged and didn’t realize they were learning because it was so much fun.” A big part of incorporating Skype lessons into Mrs. Weingartner’s curriculum is that it gives students a glimpse into the size of the world. She believes taking care of the environment and how human activity affects all parts of the world is an important lesson. She wants her students to grow up to become compassionate global human beings. Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive. The main phone number is (754) 323-6450. CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER TEAM MAKES FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME T

he Cypress Bay girls’ soccer made a historic run during the 2019 soccer season. The girls once again captured the district championship. During their 2019 playoff run they eliminated off Dr. Krop, Cooper City, Our Lady of Lourdes and Vero Beach on their way to the state championship game. The victory over Lourdes, on the road, was a major hurdle for the girls. Lourdes had eliminated the Lightning in each of the three previous seasons. However, on that night down in Miami, the Lightning pushed across a late goal to dethrone the defending state champs 1-0. Cypress Bay hosted Vero Beach in a state semi-final game at Cypress Bay where the girls made history defeating Vero Beach 2-0 and earned a birth in their first ever State Championship Game. Cypress Bay coach Kate Dwyer believed this was going to be a special year for Cypress Bay. “We were so close to knocking off Lourdes last year. The girls have worked so hard in the

off-season in building great team chemistry and collectively playing as a team. We have great senior leaders in Maya Gordon, Mariana Mazocca, and Daniela Tobon.” The girls faced off against five-time state champ Palm Harbor in the state championship game in Deland on February 22. Unfortunately, the dream season ended in heartbreak as the Lightning lost to Palm Harbor 1-0. According to coach Dwyer, “The girls had a great year, we grew as a team over the course of the year and the girls gave everything they had in the state championship game. Unfortunately, we came up one goal short. We will use this experience to move forward into next year. We return with a lot of talent and each of the girls can use this as motivation.” Cypress Bay High is located at 18600 Vista Park Boulevard. The main phone number is (754) 323-0350. Mr. Scott Neely is the school’s principal.

SCHOOLS The majority of the students from both schools, enter kindergarten as high achievers and later placed in gifted classes because of the foundation they have received. Several of the alumni graduate Top of their Class in high school and receive scholarships to prestigious universities. Students are taught to enjoy learning at a young age, because we make it fun! Each school offers their own unique customized curriculum which will give your child tools to succeed at an early age. Graduates of “A World of Knowledge Preschool” and “Apple Tree Montessori” will have the ability to READ OVER 100 WORDS before they enter kindergarten.

EVERGLADES STUDENTS LEARN THROUGH MUSICAL PERFORMANCE L

ights! Camera! Action! Are your costumes ready? Do you actually feel like a bear or a bee today? These are some of the questions posed to second grade students as they enter music class each week at Everglades Elementary School while they prepared to perform the dramatic musical play “The Share Bears.” Under the direction of music teacher, Mrs. Becky Berry, students experienced the art of expressing themselves through performing arts during music classes. Students had an opportunity to request auditions for leadership positions and character roles. Everyone involved in the music enrichment project assumed responsibilities from learning song lyrics, choreography, character

assignments, and memorizing stage positions. The story took place in Honey Hollow, a friendly community where bears and bees lived and worked cooperatively together. Students, dressed in colorful costumes, learned important life lessons about sharing and caring for each other as they dramatized the story of “The Share Bears.” The students enjoyed it so much that Mrs. Berry is planning for other performances to perform with other grades. Everglades Elementary is located at 2900 Bonaventure Boulevard. The main phone number is (754) 323-5600. Mr. Eliot Tillinger is the school’s principal.

“W

hat should I look for when searching for the best VPK program for my child?” All students who turn four (4) on or before September 1st, 2019 are eligible to receive FREE TUITION for a few hours a day at a licensed and certified preschool. The question is, “Are you getting what you are expecting?” Even though many schools advertise they offer VPK, some may fall short of delivering a quality program. A World of Knowledge Preschool and Apple Tree Montessori are nationally accredited schools with Florida Gold Seal recognition in early education. Through interactive lessons, the children are given the ability to think, explore and create different opportunities in which they can learn to become independent, confident learners. A World of Knowledge was a pioneer in offering VPK programs in Broward County and has prepared over 1,800 young children with an accelerated program intergrading multiculturalism. The program has helped children master numbers, shapes, letter recognition, phonemic awareness and respect for people and the world we live in. If you are looking for a TRUE Montessori method of learning, which enables your child to progress and master skills at his/her own pace, you are invited to visit the completely renovated campus of Apple Tree Montessori on Dykes Road, which is currently offering special VPK rates, as they celebrate 40 years of outstanding achievement in the community.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S

STRATEGIES TO BUILD YOUR CHILD’S WORKING MEMORY sure your child gets sufficient sleep. Children might roll their eyes at Throughout the course of any given day, children are asked to do a lot of different theMake “get more sleep” suggestion, but the research doesn’t lie: sleep accelerates the things, from getting ready to engaging in the classroom, from doing chores to doing homework. In school, your child’s job is to learn, but learning is actually quite complex. It requires paying attention, comprehension, active listening, reasoning, critical thinking, making comparisons and organizing thoughts—for multiple subjects. When all of those activities come easy for children, school usually comes easy too. But, if you notice that your child struggles in school and has difficulty remembering important information and focusing on homework, you might wonder what’s going on. There could be several contributors, but it is possible that your child has a weak working memory. Working memory is defined as “memory that involves storing, focusing attention on, and manipulating information for a short period of time” (Merriam-Webster). Years ago, researchers first defined working memory as memory used to plan and carry out behavior (Miller GA, Galanter E, Pribram KH. Plans and the structure of behavior. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc; 1960.) Put simply, working memory is what helps children remember homework directions long enough to complete the work. It allows them to problem solve when they encounter tricky math homework or a word they do not understand when reading. It helps children recognize when a draft of a writing assignment needs correcting. Children who lack working memory, on the other hand, likely have a range of issues in school, including: • Poor memorization skills • Difficulty paying attention in class • Difficulty staying organized • Struggles with completing math calculations in their heads • Lots of mistakes in writing (difficulty retaining and remembering grammar rules) • Difficulty working independently/easily distracted • Often unable to answer questions correctly or thoughtfully when called on in class • Often unable to follow multi-step directions Here’s the good news: you can help your child improve his or her working memory with brain-boosting exercises and other memory improvement strategies. Here are some easy ways to do so:

improvement in working memory performance. A good night of sleep will help your child improve the memory and increase focus—among many other important benefits. Play memory games. Certain games help children improve working memory because they require them to keep track of moves of their opponents and recall information quickly. Think card games, which require players to remember their cards and keep information in their heads long enough to decide their next move, and games like Simon, which has players memorize and repeat a color pattern that gets increasingly complex. Break down bigger tasks. Have your child break down complex, detailed assignments into smaller steps. He or she should write them down and keep that to-do list visible. To strengthen working memory, encourage your child to use tools like graphic organizers, visual maps and checklists when doing homework. Working memory is one of the most essential functions students need—and integral for the cognitive abilities that fuel school success. It is what allows children to manipulate, process and retain information. If you suspect your child has poor working memory, call Huntington. We’ll evaluate your child to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses and develop a targeted plan of action that focuses on memory improvement, building confidence and improving academic performance. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. I

s summer camp important? Will my child adjust? Will my child make friends? These are some of the concerns that you may have if you are considering summer camp for your child. No worries: the advantages of summer camp – like the advantages of pre-school – far outweigh any reservations that you may have. Your child will adjust if she has loving, attentive and trained counselors. It may take some time but your child will become accustomed to this new experience. All children are different, but generally within a few weeks you will see improvement. Your child will meet new campers and may make life-long friends in summer camp. More than likely your child will make friends because the focus is on play with others. One of the biggest benefits of camp is that your child will be physically active. American children are increasingly less active than they have been in the past 50 years, and as a consequence childhood obesity is at an all-time high. Children need physical activity for their bodies and their minds: studies have linked cognition to physical activity. We want our children to be academic achievers but that should not come at the expense of exercise. Do you remember physical education in school when you were a student? You may not have wanted to play kickball or tetherball, but you almost certainly looked forward to leaving the classroom and moving around. Do you remember recess? Our teachers insisted that we march in an orderly fashion out of the classroom, but once we were outside we ran like a terrier chasing a squirrel. Children need recess – a break in a very long sedentary day – but in many schools there is no recess. Children learn valuable social skills by attending summer camp: they make new friends

and learn the give and take of play. Through play they learn skills that they would not be exposed to while gaming or watching videos: they learn how to problem solve, cooperate and respect one another. Camp allows children to become more confident and relaxed because the focus is on fun. Children connect with nature as they experience the world of science through outdoor activities, field trips to nature parks or indoor science experiments. South Florida is a unique and precious environment; the everglades are at our doorstep, and we teach our campers about that world. How do you select the right summer camp for your camper? Be sure you look for a camp that has trained certified counselors and there are low counselor to camper ratios. I say this because a child’s needs at this age don’t change. They still need guidance to direct them toward appropriate behavior. They still need love and acceptance and they need to stay busy. Summer camp can be a great experience for your child. He will be active and tired at the end of the day, but he may not want to come home with you because he has had so much fun. Temple Dor Dorim offers a summer camp program for infants through 4th grade. Limited spaces are available. Call 954-389-1232 for more information. Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center has earned and maintained the highest form of national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is currently the only preschool in Weston honored with that designation.

M

ost likely you already know or have heard that STEM is an acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.” The idea behind STEM is to encourage the United States to be more competitive in technology development by creating generations of students who can excel in high-tech jobs (some like to call this generation, “STEMists.”) STEM education is an interdisciplinary and applied approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons. Students use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise. STEM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for all students as young as they start asking why. Therefore, the experiences children have during the early years are essential. As your child’s first teacher, your role is vital in creating opportunities that promote learning in a fun and safe environment. You can help introduce essential STEM skills by teaching your children to: ask questions, work together, think creatively, solve problems, explore and take calculated risks, test solutions

to problems and discover new ways of doing things. Bright & Smart is excited to announce the opening of our new STEAM Creation Center this coming May. This center is located at 101 E Commercial Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, 33334. We are a local company and are excited to be a physical part of the community with our STEAM Creation Center. We hope our presence encourages the development of more STEM skills for people of all ages. We have created a curriculum that incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math that makes learning exciting. Our curriculum enables children as young as 5 years old to be hands-on creators as they explore, discover, and learn more about their hidden capabilities. We will be offering classes, camp and creating classes for adults! So take a journey with us as we navigate through the secret passageways of Robotics, Coding, and Engineering together as a team. Unleash your inner talents and maximize your true potential with Bright & Smart! #STEAM is our Approach #LEARNING is our Goal - We are BRIGHT & SMART and are here to help!
