Dear Readers,

Welcome to an exciting new school year! I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer filled with fun activities and adventurous vacations. Now it is time to shift our focus back to education. In this issue, you will find tons of information to help you prepare for the school year: the official Broward County 2018-19 school calendar, updates from local schools, as well as Weston schools contact info, hours and 2018 FSA scores. There is also helpful advice on how to address separation anxiety and where and how to get involved with your local school. Looking to volunteer? Become a Broward County Public Schools volunteer and make an impact on the lives of so many children. Find the “How To” in our school section. We encourage all parents to join their school’s PTA or PTO. These organizations are more important than ever and give parents the opportunity to remain involved with their children and know what is going on at their schools. If you have not already signed your child up to participate in fall sports activities, now is the time. Please encourage your children to look through the magazine and choose one extracurricular activity or more that might interest them. This will help your child find a good balance between studying, activities and sports. These skills can help teach your child time management and leadership skills, as well as how to establish goals and develop a good work ethic. Check out our extensive events directory and make sure to attend the many wonderful events taking place in our own town. For those avid bike riders, sign up for the Weston Labor Day Classic, presented by Alex’s Bike Pro shop. The event takes place on Monday, September 3, from 7:00AM-11:00AM. Another one of the many great events in our community is the Moonlight Movies in the Park series starting on Saturday, October 6 at 8:00PM in Weston Regional Park. Congratulations to the Sports and Activities Directory team. The Sports and Activities Directory has been publishing for the last 16 years. We are the only one-stop source for valuable information on local events, community programs, sports and activities registration, local academic achievements, family health providers and so much more. We would like to extend a special thank you to our team and our issue sponsor TAG Gymnastics, our readers and advertising partners for all you do that make it possible to continue to do what we love. Please enjoy our back to school issue! I wish you and your children a successful school year and I look forward to seeing you out on the fields, in the dance studios and around town taking advantage of all this great town has to offer.

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

SAFETY IN AND AROUND WESTON,

10

Summertime is here and with the heat comes an increase in activities in and around water. Drowning is a preventable tragedy. Everyone should learn how to swim, and all children need supervision around water at all times. Weston was awarded the Water Smart Weston designation by the Florida Department of Health for efforts in drowning prevention education, but education is an ongoing effort. All Broward County residents’ ages 6 months – 4 years qualify for a coupon of $40 toward swim lessons. Visit www.WaterSmartBroward.com for details. CPR is another essential element. Weston BSO Fire Rescue offers free CPR training year-round, because anytime is the perfect time to learn to save a life. Safety transcends to our roadways. Safety, along with a healthy dose of respect and patience, is needed by everyone. Parents – please stress to teen drivers the importance of removing risky behaviors such as talking & texting, drinking, speeding, tailgating, aggressive driving, not wearing seat belts or driving while tired. These behaviors are by no means limited to teens and we all need to slow down, pay attention to traffic control devices, follow laws and be respectful of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. It’s the law and it’s what makes living in Weston a special place and we want to keep it that way. Be Prepared. Hurricane season is upon us, and we once again challenge our residents and businesses to be Weston Ready. The first 72 is up to you. This means you and your family need supplies on-hand to be self-sufficient for a minimum of three days. Start now. Pick up extra water, batteries and food goods each time you shop. You can donate unused food items to the local Harvest Drive or food pantry in mid-November. It is essential to have a family and/or business communication plan in place PRIOR to an emergency. A great resource is www.Ready.gov. Your phone numbers should be registered with Weston’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System. Your contact information is confidential and cannot be shared. Sign up today by clicking on the CodeRED Enrollment link on the City’s homepage at WestonFl.org or call 954385-2000 and a City staff member will register you. For those on social media, the City’s Twitter and YouTube accounts, @CityofWeston, provides a wealth of city and hurricane preparedness information. Our @WestonFLAlert Twitter account is for ‘notifications of an urgent nature or that will impact persons, property or travel’ and we encourage you to place an audible alert on this Twitter account. Weston Election - On November 6, 2018, registered voters of Weston will have the opportunity to head to the polls for the election of two City Commission Seats (Seat No. 3 and Seat No. 4) as well as consider two City Charter Amendments. The first amendment proposes a change in the compensation for Mayor and City Commission. Since 2002, the City Charter provides for the Mayor and Commissioners to be compensated at the rate of $13,000 and $10,000 per year, respectively. The proposed amendment would increase salaries to $16,000 and $12,300 per year, respectively, effective December 1, 2018, to increase annually on December 1, based on the annual change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The second amendment proposes to eliminate term limits for the Mayor and Commissioners. When incorporated the Weston Charter did not have term limits. Term limits were adopted in 2002. The proposed Charter Amendment language states: The current City Charter provides for term limits for the Mayor and City Commissioners. The proposed amendment would eliminate the term limits. I encourage you to educate yourself on the candidates and amendments. If you have questions, I am an email away. Whatever your thoughts on each matter, you should exercise our great country’s democracy and your right to vote. Your City Commission will take a short recess and will be back in full swing with budget reviews and public meetings. The public hearing dates for the proposed Weston budgets are set for Wednesday, September 12th and Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 7:00 PM at Weston City Hall. Please confirm dates/times at WestonFL.org/Events. We welcome your input. Be safe, be prepared… and have fun!

Until next time…

Mayor Daniel J. Stermer City of Weston

AROUND TOWN

AROUND TOWN

T

he Wonderland journey never ends for those who are curious and always ready to explore. At a very young age, children have passions that can either develop into their careers or simply help them acquire new and valuable skills. As a new school year is starting, you are most likely searching for a program that can keep your kids busy and entertained. How about a program that not only teaches fashion design but also allows children and their families to become closer to and more valuable to their communities? Petite Designers Fashion Institute offers a unique, fully personalized fashion design program for kids. From learning the basics of sewing and pattern making to putting together a rich portfolio, this all-encompassing program offers an exciting opportunity for all young talents dreaming of fashion design. Your kids’ creativity and work always go together while having lots of fun as they present their lines of clothes and accessories on a real runway! Also, the petite designers learn the basics of entrepreneurship when they sell their work at numerous fairs and other events. The opportunities in the fashion design industry are countless, and the Petite Designers Fashion Institute wants your kids to embrace them all. But the fun doesn’t stop here.

According to Diana Jelkh, the program director at Petite Designers, “As we aim to develop curiosity and confidence in all our petite designers and create a safe and nurturing environment for them, we also find our mission in helping them expand their boundaries and see far beyond them.” Every year, the petite designers find ways to help children in their own communities or outside the country. Together, they work on projects called “Sewing for Others” and make lives of kids in need brighter, warmer, and safer. Diana shared this vision with us, “We encourage everybody, not only our kids, to participate in these projects. It is amazing to watch the kids, their parents and the teachers work together and dedicate their work to those who need it the most.” The staff of Petite Designers wants your children to love and enjoy everything they do; therefore, this program is fully flexible and meets their needs and interests. Your kids learn the theory and practice of fashion design at their own pace and you know that they are having a wonderful time with their friends and learning new things every day. 1631 Bonaventure Blvd., #1639, Weston, FL 33326. SUMMERFEST THE SHAPE OF MUSIC OF THE WORLD

nce again, the Weston Philharmonic Society (WPS) has brought to our city the very popular Summerfest. This concert featured international musicians, joining principal members of the Symphony of the Americas, under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. More than 10 countries were represented on stage. This very special performance, titled “Summerfest – The Shape of Music of the World”, was held Thursday evening, July 19, 2018, at the Dor Dorim Auditorium. The program began at 7:00PM followed by a dessert reception. Andrea Burghardt, Co-President of the WPS, said, “We are delighted to present this format, which is the same as our concerts at Cypress Bay. It gives our attendees a chance to enjoy a variety of delicious desserts and to meet with the visiting artists and the Maestro, who provided us with a wonderful evening of music”. This is the 30th anniversary season for Summerfest, which is the longest running film festival in Florida. Summerfest visits Panama as well as Florida. Their mission is to promote music, donate musical instruments, and work with young students. This directly aligns with the mission of the Weston Philharmonic.

The very appreciative audience was treated to a wonderful program that included: “Over the Rainbow”, the finale of Mozart’s Jupiter symphony, the Danse Bacchanale from Samson et Delila, and “Por Una Cabeza”. Marco Key-Navarro, principal oboist with the Symphony of the Americas, drew cheers as soloist in Handel’s Concerto for Oboe No. 3. The husband and wife team Orlando (Cuba) and Svetlana (Ukraine)also received praise for rendition of “La Bella Cubana.” Lou Marett, Co-President, says, “This program was a magical evening, and follows our mission of bringing the finest music of all genres to Weston. The intimacy of this setting is unique and enhances the interaction among the audience, the musicians, and the music.” Attendees mingled with the musicians during a dessert reception following the concert. Rose Sklar, Vice-President of Ways and Means, says, “Proceeds from all our events go toward our elementary in-school program, which reaches over 6.000 students each year and our scholarship program for student musicians who will be continuing their music studies in college. So attendees not only enjoy a very special concert, but also help pass on their love of music to future generations.” It was a very successful and enjoyable evening for all.

Helping Female Athletes Prevent Sports-Related Knee Injuries

oday we are seeing an increasing number of girls playing competitive sports, with roughly 200,000 at the collegiate level. Along with increased sports participation also comes an increased risk for injury, with girls being at a higher risk for certain types of injuries than boys. Sports that involve jumping, twisting and pivoting can put tremendous amounts of strain on the knee, which is one of the most commonly injured joints in young female athletes. One of the most serious knee injuries is a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Female athletes are of particular concern with four to six times greater risk than their male counterparts. Fortunately, education and training programs are available in South Florida that focus on preventing ACL injuries. For instance, the Nicklaus Children’s Sports Health Center in Pinecrest incorporates muscle strengthening, motor skill coordination, agility drills and other training aimed at reducing the risk of an ACL injury. Prevention is vital because an ACL injury will typically result in surgical reconstruction and up to 12 months of rehabilitation. Even after your daughter is back in action playing sports there can be long-term consequences, including a 50 percent risk of developing osteoarthritis within a decade and a 25 percent chance of re-injury. The signs of a knee injury include pain, swelling and difficulty moving the leg or walking even a short distance. If your daughter is injured, seek medical care right away for diagnosis of the problem, which could be a torn ACL, a broken bone, or other muscle or ligament injury. If surgery is needed, it is important to see a

pediatric specialist so that the injury can be treated appropriately with regard to your child’s future bone growth. The initial goals are to stabilize the knee, strengthen the muscles, and restore the full range of motion. Advanced training is often needed to improve motor skill coordination, balance, speed and confidence prior to returning to sport. Once the rehabilitation program is completed, your daughter may be able to return to sports. Tips for protecting the knee and preventing ACL injuries: • Perform a proper warm up prior to sports participation that includes dynamic activities such as skipping and side shuffling. • Participate in 6 to 8 weeks of pre-season conditioning to physically prepare for the sporting season and reduce the risk of injury. • Wear properly sized footwear with the right tread pattern. For instance, running shoes may “grip” the court too much when playing tennis. If your daughter is wearing shoes with cleats, be sure they are the right length for the condition of the field. • Inspect the field or court prior to games or practices for any potential hazards such as spilled liquids or potholes. • Be mindful of fatigue, tell your daughter to listen to her body. If her knee “doesn’t feel right,” or she feels exhausted, it is ok to pull out of the game. Remember that it is far better to prevent a knee injury than to reconstruct a torn ACL. Lauren Schlacht Butler is the physical therapy supervisor at the Nicklaus Children’s Sports Health Center in Pinecrest, which offers a comprehensive ACL injury prevention program including group injury prevention classes.

T

he Cypress Bay Athletic program hosted their first Parent night on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Cypress Bay High School. The initiative was launched in an effort to better communicate with the Weston community and incoming and prospective student-athletes for the upcoming 2018-19 school year. Points of emphasis included: school protocols, paper-work procedures and other specifics related to Cypress Bay athletics. The entire Cypress Bay coaching staff was on hand for the event. The second part of the evening featured breakout sessions where prospective students and parents could meet with the head coach from any of the many varsity sports offerings at Cypress Bay. According to CB Athletic director, Scott Selvidge, “We wanted to have an event in which we could engage the community and also put our coaching staff front and center. We have a terrific staff and I wanted them to be the point person for each of their sports to begin to foster and build relationships with both students and parents.” Approximately 500 people were in attendance for the event. According to one parent, “The event was very helpful. A lot of information was presented and associating a name with a face with the coaching staff was also helpful.” Going forward, the CB Athletic department would like to make this an annual event. “We will solicit feedback from the parents and coaching staff to assess what was successful and what we need to tweak or add going forward. I would really like to make this an annual event to both welcome incoming students and parents and also get the many layers of information out to the community.” Cypress Bay offers 25 varsity sports throughout the school year and typically has over 850 student-athletes participating in those programs. Cypress Bay High is located at 18600 Vista Park Boulevard. The main school number is (754) 323-0350. Mr. Scott Neely is the school’s principal.

only constant in the universe. As parents we intuitively understand this, because raising our children

is a series of progressive changes. Each

56

change is more amazing than the last.

The mileposts in our child’s development are all changes. Our babies respond to our voices, and we respond to their cries. We smile at our babies and they return the smile. We speak to them and before they can form words they try to reply. On one very important day our baby speaks his first word. Our baby learns to sit up, crawl and eventually walk, and is longer a baby. These changes are how we measure our child’s development. Transitions – stopping one activity and starting up a new one - can be difficult for toddlers. One of the reasons transitions are hard for your toddler is because he has a Zen concept of time: there is only the now and the future does not exist. Try telling your toddler that he can play later, but right now you have to go to the grocery store, or he can have a cookie later! Developmentally the problem is twofold: initially toddlers don’t understand that when Mommy takes him to preschool for the first time that Mommy will be coming back, and they don’t have the verbal skills yet to communicate their fears. That can lead to anxiety, tears and outbursts. Change and new beginnings can be challenging for children and their parents, but parents can help ease our child’s separation anxiety when they begin preschool. I know: I am a parent, teacher and now a director, and I did it all wrong before I knew better. Learn from my mistakes. Our children are very sensitive to our moods, so if your

child senses your anxiety about the first day of school, he will be anxious too. Walk your son to class, give him a kiss – you may want to develop a ritual- “Mommy will give you three butterfly kisses when you start school and I will always come back and give you three butterfly kisses after your nap when school is over.” It is natural to cry, but don’t cry until you have turned away. When you leave, fight the urge to peek in the window because long goodbyes are more painful and create a sense of uncertainty in your toddler. Whether you are managing employees, clients or toddlers, the most important thing is to set expectations. Use simple words and explain to your child, for example, “After your nap (or lunch) Mommy will be here to take you home.” You may want to develop a routine at home before leaving for school. Rather than announcing that you are leaving in ten minutes because toddlers do not have a sense of time, let her set a timer for ten minutes every day. Tell her, “Every day before you go to school you and Mommy have things to do. We both have breakfast, use the potty, get dressed and then you play until you hear the timer ring. Then we put away your toys, put on your shoes, and go to school together.” Teachers are very effective at helping with transition. Talk to your child’s teacher and ask her to work with you by reading a book or singing a song when they arrive to establish an arrival routine. Ask your teacher to remind your child that “Mommy always comes back after your lunch or nap”. You may want your child to bring a “lovey”, a favorite stuffed animal from home. Change is growth and our children will be changing and growing for a long time. Working together we can help ease the anxiety and share the joy.

SCHOOLS Many of CIE’s initial holiday activities are still active, and now a tradition; costume/ story time parades, Winterfest, 5th grade Jamboree, graduation and 50’s celebration, the CIE yearly Olympics and Jump Rope for Heart. Our 5th graders have traveled every year to Washington, D.C., and to Marine Lab in Key Largo, and 4th grade travels to St. Augustine yearly. In 1992, under the leadership of CIE parent, Renee Herman, administration, and parents, Harvest Drive was started in the cafeteria. With the initial goal to teach CIE students to give back, it continues to evolve even today. Harvest Drive now provides over 2,400 Broward County families Thanksgiving dinners, groceries, and toys. Now we are able to teach Broward students, “If each of us gives a little bit, together we can create a significant result.” The initial years cultivated the next thirty years of traditions that have evolved to create a well-rounded education for all students that attended the amazing CIE. The staff and school community look forward to another 30 years of excellence! Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. The main school number is (754) 323-5250. ountry Isles Elementary celebrated their 30th year Anniversary this school year. We were the first Broward County Public School to open in Weston. The first day with students in the new building was October 4, 1987. That first year, Country Isles had approximately 560 students. Mr. Tom Bardash was the founding Principal of Country Isles. Mr. Bardash, and all the Principals listed below, continued to raise the educational bar year after year, maintaining an A+ School for 20+ years, while keeping the many traditions that have made CIE a wonderful place for our children. Tom Bardash, 1987 to 1994; Marisol Smith, 1994 to 2000; E. A. Murry, 2000 to 2004; Tonya Frost, 2004 to 2011. Mrs. Mindy Morgan became our Assistant Principal in 2004 and has been our Principal since 2011. Her fourteen years of experience leading Country Isles’ staff, teachers, parents and children, gives CIE a unique advantage. Mrs. Morgan leads many new school programs that continuously make a difference in the lives of our students. Mr. Brad Davis, 5th grade Teacher and originator of the 5th grade Jamboree, and Mr. Randy Rollins, Art Teacher and After School Care Supervisor, are still teaching at CIE and have been since it opened thirty years ago.

The annual Gallery of Excellence showcases the best yearbooks printed by Walsworth. Only a small percentage of the yearbooks Walsworth publish are included in this distinguished collection. Books are chosen based on their superior examples of theme, coverage, design and photography and copy.

Many individuals and schools use these award-winning yearbooks to form ideas for their yearbooks throughout the year. Walsworth yearbook representatives share Gallery books with other schools and at workshops as examples and idea-generators, and they are displayed at regional, state and national conventions and workshops. Students and school advisors use yearbook covers, spreads, photos and coverage ideas from these books in Walsworth’s educational materials, such as the Possibilities idea book and Idea File magazine. Gallery books, including Falcon Cove yearbook, ignite the creativity in other yearbook staffs. The induction of every yearbook honors the school staff’s exceptional work and dedication to excellence. Falcon Cove Middle is located at 4251 Bonaventure Blvd. The main school number is (754) 323-3200. Dr. Mark Kaplan is the school’s principal.

ountry On April 30th, the excitement in the 5th grade classrooms was palpable! Manatee Bay Elementary 5th graders were counting down towards becoming National First In Math® champions for the sixth time! Laptops open, students feverishly worked on math problems so that they could secure enough stickers (similar to points) to give them the #1 rank in the Nation in this online Math enrichment program. First In Math® has an impressive participation from 6,000+ schools and over 10 Million students nationwide. Rep. Richard Stark, Florida State Representative and Weston resident, visited all the 5th grade classrooms, encouraged the students and reminded them of the importance of math in all spheres of life. He also pledged to continue his efforts to secure adequate funding for education initiatives in the state budget. In a letter of encouragement, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, “Your #1 position is testament to your hard work and dedication, outranking thousands of other schools across our nation. I wish you all success in winning, what is hopefully, your sixth national championship!”

ince Everglades Elementary opened its doors almost twenty years ago, students have felt enormous pride seeing their artwork displayed during the annual “Night at the Museum” Art Show. It is a night of creative fun, art, and music for the whole family to enjoy. In addition to viewing artwork, visitors can listen to Everglades’ students serenading guests with a variety of musical instruments while parading throughout the hallways. With edible goodies and hands-on activities throughout the school, this event interests all who attend. The Night at the Museum displays hallways overflowing with ceramic art creations and opportunities for parents and kids to partake in hands-on projects like Origami, a Japanese art process of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures. There is also Mandala coloring, Lego building, and artistic tissue paper “flower” creations. Third grade student, Isabella Gusso, attended the event with her family and spoke about the importance of the annual event. She says, “It was very rewarding and exciting seeing my artwork displayed in the hallway. My mom was very proud of me!” With over 1,100 students at Everglades, it is quite a massive undertaking to guarantee that all students have their artwork displayed. Art teacher, Sandy Goldglantz, has a very organized system to ensure each student has one piece in the art show and

At a Countdown-to-Victory party in Ms. Washington’s classroom, the gathering of students, parents and administrators burst into applause and cheers at 3 p.m.! With one click of the ‘refresh’ button on a giant monitor, the final rankings showed Manatee Bay as the #1 ranked school in the Nation for a 6th time! Manatee Bay is also proud to have the top family team and two students in the top 10 spot in the nation! The 3rd, 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th ranked players in the state of Florida are also Manatee Bay 5th graders! “At Manatee Bay, we believe that when we put our minds and hearts to something, we can achieve our goals!” said Ms. Devaughn, principal of Manatee Bay, as she congratulated the students on their focus, determination and hard work. The school had a First In Math® awards ceremony on May 21, 2018 with School Board members and First In Math® personnel present. As in years past, the Mayor of Weston attended the celebration, as well as Rep. Stark’s presence to encourage the 5th graders to continue blazing a trail towards academic excellence in middle school and beyond. Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive. after 20 years of experience, she proves she has it down to a science. Why is this event so critical? Sandy explains, “I feel this event is so important for students’ self-confidence. Our school is very diverse, and our students have a wide array of talents beyond the academic. The art show gives all students a venue to shine and feel good about themselves. It gives the school a chance to celebrate our diversity and students’ individual talents. It is important that every child is showcased, and no child feels that their work is not up to par. I wholeheartedly believe every child can create art as long as they are allowed to be free to do so.” Principal Eliot Tillinger is an avid supporter of the arts at Everglades and feels this event is very special. He says, “The arts are a vibrant part of the complete education here at Everglades. At Everglades Elementary, art and music enrich a child’s development and inspire creativity and uniqueness in academics as well. We are most proud of the achievements of our students and our “Night at the Museum” provides the opportunity to showcase the multiple talents that exist in our amazing school.” Everglades Elementary is located at 2900 Bonaventure Boulevard. Under the direction of Susan Euler, this very popular program hits the ground running every year. Students begin the year working on individual pieces to be presented to local professionals in the theatre industry for adjudication. Qualifying pieces are then eligible to compete against other troupes at the state level in February. Tequesta boasts several “Critic’s Choice” performances at the state level. Additionally, students will be working on a one-act play, and two full-length productions, one for performance in November, and, of course, the-end-of-the- year musical, presented at Western High School. Cambridge at Tequesta Trace: Tequesta’s Cambridge program nurtures hard working, high achieving students who enjoy challenges and problem solving through classes that integrate language arts, social studies, and science. Students complete integrated assignments over the summer to prepare for the school year and practice the Cambridge Learner attributes of being confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged. Last year, students participated in an aviation day as well as a field trip to the local FBI field office. Some students were even admitted to the highly competitive FBI/Cyber Stem Program! Much of the Cambridge curriculum is student interest and current events driven, so we look forward to what topics students will explore during the 2018-2019 school year. ypically, when we think of after school activities we think of sports and activities that require physical effort. However, there is a whole world of activities that develop children’s intellect and are proven to be great tools for school and social life. Intellectual activities include those activities in which children have fun and gain knowledge on a specific subject. Chess is one of those activities in which children not only have a great deal of fun, but they also gain a variety of valuable skills while they learn and play. The main goal of chess is for children to understand logical strategy to foresee and predict consequences of action, therefore developing critical and logical thinking skills. Chess teaches children to be independent while learning to make decisions by themselves. It encourages children’s creativity and imagination as they become more inventive through play while developing new strategies and moves. Chess is self-motivating, encouraging children to search for the best move and the best plan to get to Check Mate! It is a rewarding and fun activity because the more children practice, the better players they become, and not one game is exactly the same as another. Players can create new moves and develop new strategies every time they play.

A

Learning to play chess at an early stage in life is very beneficial to their success in the classroom and life. It helps students concentrate and develop memory skills which, in turn, helps them pay attention in class. It also stimulates self-confidence, opening the door to further develop leadership skills. Children amass reasoning skills naturally while they increase their ability to solve abstract problems and anticipate conflict situations. With respect to values, it is a proven fact that playing chess diminishes violence at school and in the community, promoting respect for the other players, responsibility for their own actions, and compliance with the rules of the game. Chess goes hand in hand with science, technology, math, art and psychology. It develops a scientific way of thinking. It involves an infinitive number of calculations and strategies. Chess is considered an “Art” in the form of a game, and is a test of patience, nerves and will power. Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been running for more than 13 years in Florida. We are present in private and public schools, and city community centers in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach counties. Contact Chess for Kids for more information about our aftercare and chess in the classroom programs (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.

Gator Run ES Conduct “Phonics Surgery” in Spanish By: Laura Pantin, Dual Language Teacher

t Gator Run Elementary, teachers are encouraged to be creative and innovative so our students will be motivated and engaged in their own learning. As a school, we pride ourselves in finding memorable ways for our students to experience learning in an interactive manner. As a Kindergarten Spanish teacher, it is also crucial for me to create opportunities for children to see language learning as an exciting and collaborative process. Therefore, as part of our Community Helpers unit in Kindergarten, I transformed my Spanish Kindergarten Dual Language classroom into a “hospital”. When students walked in, I told them that there was an emergency at the hospital and there were five sick patients. Dressed in my own doctor gear, I told the students that I would need their help as doctors so that we could help each patient get better. Therefore, each student became a “doctor” in order to complete specific phonics-related activities in Spanish. Each student dressed with doctor gear, including a robe, cap, mask and gloves and they each received a folder with the information they would need to fill out for their five “patients.” Each table in my classroom was set-up with a patient and the phonics activity they would need to complete in order to help the patient feel better. Each activity required

students to fill in an answer and therefore each activity had task cards and answer cards, so I provided tongs so that they could complete the phonetic activity. The activities were each focused on specific phonics skills we have been learning throughout the year. For the first patient, students had to find the two missing vowels in order to complete the word. For the second patient, the students needed to find the middle syllable that completed the word. For the third patient, the students needed to find the sight word that completed the sentence correctly. For the fourth patient, the students needed to decide whether the word had two, three or four syllables. Finally, for the fifth patient, the students needed to find the ending syllable that completed the word. Students rotated around to each patient until completing all of the activities! Throughout the whole process, I had a heart rate monitor playing in the background and encouraged the students to help each other and work together to complete the activities. Students worked diligently to help each patient and to fill in the information in their folders. Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway. The main school number is (754) 323-5850. Mr. Keith Peters is the school’s principal.

pple Tree Montessori helps students develop self-confidence, foster curiosity, and ultimately become independent learners. Apple Tree is a small school with a big perspective. The academics in elementary and middle school are 2nd to no other Montessori institution in the surrounding communities. Our students place high in statewide academic competitions preparing them for high school. Most of our students earn high school credit, while still enrolled at Apple Tree. Our middle school graduates are accepted into advanced academic programs and receive scholarships from prestigious high schools in Broward County, including American Heritage, Archbishop McCarthy, and St. Thomas Aquinas Schools. We are preparing 21st-century learners and are currently accepting applications for our prestigious elementary and middle school programs. In 2017, the school, under new management, has received a complete facelift and enhancements to the already elevated and reputable curriculum. We guarantee that you will be pleased with the multitude of challenging programs offered at the school. If your child is bored in elementary or middle school and is not feeling challenged, but has the ability to be self-motivated and enjoys learning…then APPLE TREE is the right school for your child. Our students work in small collaborative groups, and we offer an individualized course of study. Our students also take part in numerous leadership programs during their middle school years which develop confidence, compassion, organization, initiative, and the ability to

urpose is less about what you want than about what you give. The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others. Crossing a finish line sparks multiple feelings. Some include fulfillment, exhilaration, accomplishment and more. Helping someone else cross the finish line, who can’t propel themselves on their own power, is twice as impactful. On Sept 30, 2018, thirty seven special triathletes will be paired with power buddies to race the Escape to Miami Triathlon. All 37 special triathletes will ride their wheelchairs aboard a large yacht that will ship them to a remote, uninhabited island, approximately 1 mile away from mainland Miami. At the island, they will be transferred from the wheelchairs into their own inflatable raft. Next, their Power Buddy will strap on a waterproof cord around their waist and to the front of the raft, and then swim 1 mile to Miami pulling their special triathlete. Once on land, they will be transferred into a special compass race chair attached to a bicycle where the duo will ride for 25 miles throughout Miami and Miami Beach. Power buddy duos get to enjoy each other’s company as they cheer on their friends and each other during the race. It is incredibly rewarding to see the special triathletes enjoy the feeling of the wind on their smiling faces as they approach the final transition. duo is encouraging each other to hang in there by eating, drinking, laughing and screaming screams of joy to reach the finish line! During the last 500 meters, the race participants can hear the roar of spectators screaming their names as they cross the finish line. At the finish line, the duo hugs each other with joy, accomplishment and camaraderie, glowing with smiles. When you know that your buddy is depending on you to power them through the course, you experience an indescribable force that energizes you to continue performing at any cost. If that’s not enough, there’s an unexplained joy of fulfillment knowing that the unending smile of your buddy is because of your generous contribution of your fitness and friendship. The Power Buddies of Special Compass enjoy the meaningful races with the “Differently Abled” often. Healthy, fit people are looking for ways they can give back to their community in need, somehow.
